After the events of Las Almas and everything involving Shepherd gets fixed, Task Force 141 and Shadow Company are forced to spend 8 weeks together (minimum) to repair trust and regain their alliance.
These are some Incorrect Quotes from during the 141's stay. (Moose belongs to @cod-dump )
Graves: All right, Shadows! Welcome to Ceremony Day for Shadow Olympics. Unfortunately, this year we have... guests. The military and government, in their infinite wisdom, have decided we need to repair our alliance with some of Britain's forces. In other words, it's a government ordered get-along-shirt with *long pause* Task Force 141. *loud booing from the Shadows* Graves: Yes, Flash? Flash: I am new here, so why do we hate them? *everyone is now suddenly very awkward* *Woody leans over and whispers the answer to Flash* Flash: Nevermind, sir! *sits back down* Graves: This is gonna be awful
*Ghost is watching something with interest on their third day at Shadow Base* Soap: Watcha lookin' at, Lt? Ghost: *wordlessly points* Soap: You're watchin' one of the Shadows... run laps?? Ghost: Yes. For the last twenty minutes. Soap: Oh god... Ghost: I don't think he plans on stopping anytime soon, either. *Flash runs by and waves dramatically before speeding up* Soap and Ghost: What the fuck?
*Soap has found himself in the motor pool* Soap: Damn, this truck is nice! Truck, appearing behind him: It is, but you aren't, so get the fuck out of my shop. Soap: But I've never seen an American HEMTT before!! Truck, skeptical: You know what kind of truck this is? Soap: Hell yeah! *an hour later* Graves: It seems like everyone's getting along okay, so far. Price, scowling: Sure, we'll go with that. It's not at all like your Shadows are terrorizing my men. Graves: That's a bold accusation- What the fuck? *they both look over to see Truck telling Soap all about the HEMTT and Soap is loving every second* Price: Is that an issue? Graves: Truck doesn't like anyone in his shop... Soap, notices them: PRICE LOOK AT THIS FUCKING TRUCK!! IT GOT COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND TRUCK HERE COMPLETELY REDID IT FROM SCRATCH!! ISN'T THAT SO COOL?! CAN WE GET A TRUCK LIKE THIS?? Price: Absolutely not! Graves, doubled over: The world is ending...
*Another day of Ghost watching Flash run cause he's afraid of the power this kid has* Woody, walking with Moose: I don't think Ghost has any ill intentions here, okay? Moose: You don't know that! Woody: Give me one reason to believe Ghost isn't a good guy. Moose, shaking and pointing: He watches Flash run and I don't know why. *Ghost is standing there with his arms crossed and blatantly watching Flash* Woody: Oh, yeah he does. That's... normal, right? I mean we all watched Flash run like this when he was brand new. Moose: But- *can't form words to convey his concern for Flash's safety* Woody: Tell ya what, I'll get Graves to talk to their captain about getting Ghost to stop. In the meantime, just hang out here and keep an eye on the kid if you're so worried. Moose: Uh, okay... Sure, I'll stay here by myself with The Ghost and be the only thing keeping Flash safe. *Woody shakes his head with a laugh and leaves* *Ghost gets the uncomfortable feeling he's being watched* *looks over to see Moose glaring daggers at him* Ghost, thinking: God that guy really hates me, doesn't he? Maybe I should show I'm actually concerned this kid's gonna drop halfway through his laps... yeah, that'll work, right? Shadows are loyal to each other. Moose, thinking: I'm so fucking scared right now, but if he makes one move towards Flash I'll- I'll kill him! Ghost, calling out to Flash: You need a water break! Flash: Oh shit, you right! *runs over to where Ghost is standing to get his water* Moose, terrified so it comes out harsh: Flash sets a timer on his watch for water breaks. Ghost: Oh, right. Just wanted to make sure he's not overworking himself. Flash, oblivious: 'S okay, Moose! My timer was about to go off anyways! Moose: *grunts* Ghost, thinking again as Moose all but glares at him: Well that backfired... Moose, also thinking: He's gonna fucking kill me, oh god, oh shit, Flash run! Flash, sipping his water and looking between them thinking: What am I witnessing? Is this power play? What even is that?
*Gaz and Soap talking while outside during the sunset* Soap: Have you had a conversation with that kid they call Flash, yet? Gaz: YES! Oh my god, I thought you talked. He's really nice but holy shit can he talk. *they look over upon hearing something in the water* *It's Ness crawling out of the pool in his full wetsuit* *Soap and Gaz scream cause they don't recognize him as a person* Ness: What?! Gaz: You're fucking terrifying! Soap: I wanna go home...

++ 𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐗𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐆
[summary] forced to voice an embarrassing thought to keep from dying, shen does what he does best and comes to your bedside to tease you.
[cws] gn reader. minor spoilers for the UMA spoil fight. reader has a broken rib. unedited.
Tumblr media
Maybe turning into a semi-mindless zombie wouldn’t be so bad - at least you wouldn’t have to worry about doing a skin routine any more.
You also wouldn’t have to shout out your hopes and dreams and completely embarrass yourself in front of the trio.
67 seconds.
You sigh to yourself, arms crossed over your chest as you listen to Shen’s dream —a very grandiose one at that, but a part of you feels as if there’s a small possibility of it happening…or maybe that’s just your bias talking—, and three sets of eyes turn to you, waiting.
“Oh,” you start, suddenly feeling a bit embarrassed at the attention. “I…I think I’m just gonna let the timer run out, guys. Don’t worry about me. Carry on.” You wave them off.
“Stop fuckin’ around, this isn’t a game.” Andy snaps, and you shoot him an annoyed look. The man that had come charging in with a rocket launcher, snagged a zombie-bride, and then proceeded to have the entirety of the zombie town participate in a brawl was telling you to stop fuckin’ around?
“Maybe you should try telling that to yourself, you half-dead per—” A head of blue hair is suddenly blocking your vision, and you blink as Shen crouches in front of you, his eyes trained on yours as he gives you a patient look.
“What’s going on?” His eyes flick between your steadily decreasing timer and your face. “Even if we kill Spoil, their ability won’t go away, you know. You’ll stay a zombie.”
“That’s fine,” you obstinately turn your nose up. “I’ve been thinking about switching up my look anywa—!” A scream is pulled from you when you’re suddenly snatched up into the air, and you look back to see Andy holding a fistful of your shirt, a maniacal grin on his face as he propels the both of you closer to spoil.
“You wanna be a zombie, eh? Then let me help speed up the process!” You recall how Andy had immediately spoiled when he got too close to the UMA, and a wave of panic washes over you as you’re forced to come face-to-face with your decision.
“W-Wait! I change my mind! Andy, I said—Andy!” He catapults you into the air, and you wonder for a brief second how the hell Fuuko could possibly get used to this.
Andy grins up at you, and your hands reach out for him as you go flying back down, only to be met with nothing as he cackles. “You know what to do if you don’t wanna die!”
Your gaze moves to Shen who’s watching on with a look of amusement, and your cheeks and ears burn as you slap your hands over your eyes.
Damn it all.
-
“I’ve gotta say, your dream is quite the lofty goal.”
You groan as you flip over in the infirmary’s bed. Not only had you been forced to shout your humiliating dream at the top of your lungs, but Andy had also failed to practice the same care and compassion he put into carrying Fuuko around, resulting in him breaking two of your ribs when his torso slammed into yours to keep you from going splat on the ground.
Maybe if I ignore him, he’ll go away - it’s wishful thinking, but it’s better than facing him after you loudly declared that your dream in life is to—
“I never saw myself getting married,” Shen muses, “but if it was to you…well, I don’t think I’d have too many complaints.” The heart monitor you’re hooked up to starts to beep wildly, and you make a noise of embarrassment before you’re hastily moving to pull the wires away from you.
You only manage to get one off before a pair of warm, strong hands are covering your own and pulling them down to rest in your lap, and your head snaps up to lock gazes with Shen, that signature smile ever present. “I hate you.”
“Yet you wanna marry me - you’re a strange one.” He breathes out a laugh, slightly leaning forward in his chair, and you go to turn your head only to find that you can’t.
“Shen, stop.”
“What?” You narrow your eyes at him, and he pouts before dropping his ability. “I don’t like when you hide that cute face of yours. Haven’t I told you that?” Yes, many times, and it’s only served in making you want to hide it even more to conceal your burning cheeks.
“Well, get used to not seeing it because I’m never showing it again once I get out of here.” You’ll go into hiding—put your ability to good use and vanish off the grid and lay low in the African jungles or something. You could live off the land; build a small house, start a garden, hunt for food, really just reconnect with nature while you waited for the world to end.
Yeah, that’ll do.
“Oh that won’t do,” Shen tsks as he shakes his head. “It won’t be much of a wedding if I can’t see your face.” The beeping goes haywire again, and you sputter as you shake your hands free from his grip.
“I-you-we’re not getting married!” The both of you hadn’t even kissed yet—you weren’t even in a relationship, not really! There was…something between the two of you, but with the possibility of being killed so high, no one was really eager to form such connections.
The idea of getting married to Shen had only come to you after hearing Andy announce that he was getting hitched, to a zombie of all things, and your mind had immediately conjured up images of you and Shen being the ones to tie the knot. It had been a silly thought, but your brain had latched onto it nonetheless in that instant.
“Yet.” He stresses, and then your hands are back in his, his fingers intertwining with yours. “We’ve got a lot of milestones to hit before we can finally tie the knot, after all.” He leans in a bit more, and your eyes widen as his flick down to your lips. “…I think now would be a good time to hit one of ‘em, don’t you?”
…you must have died. Andy hadn’t caught you at all and you had burst open on the ground - they were probably scooping your body parts up right now to give you a proper burial.
You must be in Heaven right now, and this is simply all just some kind of hallucination that God blessed the love-sick idiot with, and who were you to deny such a generous blessing?
“…yeah.”
His lips are soft against yours, incredibly soft, like pillows, and his scent wraps around you and squeezes you tight. You feel warm all over, and when one of his hands move to cup the side of your neck, you briefly wonder if you had went to Hell instead with how hot your skin burns.
His tongue runs along your bottom lip, prompting a gasp from you, and you feel him huff out a laugh through his nose before his tongue is making its way in. It’s rubs against yours, and then it’s running along the roof of your mouth and forcing you to abruptly pull back from the ticklish feeling.
The both of yours breathing is ragged, but that doesn’t stop either of you for going in again - the next kiss is messier, sloppier, chockfull of held back emotions that had been festering for months, and Shen curls an arm around your waist to tug you closer.
A sharp pain follows the action, and you wince through a groan as Shen immediately pulls back and moves his hand away from your side. “I’m sorry,” he pants, lips moving to press against your temple. “I got too caught up.”
“It’s okay.” So much for being in Heaven. “It’s just still really sore.” He hums, fingers softly tugging at the hospital gown you wear as his eyes take in your face. You take the chance to do the same, although you find your gaze focusing on his pink, puffy lips more than anything else.
They curve into a grin. “See something ya like?”
“No.” His fingers push into your cheeks.
“Your face is burning up. You sure you don’t see something you like? You positive? Maybe you want another kiss, huh?” He squishes your cheeks together, forcing your lips to pucker, and you make a noise of complaint before he’s pressing a quick kiss to your mouth. “And another, yeah?” He kisses you again, a loud, exaggerated ‘mwah’ sounding after, and you laugh as best you can with your cheeks squished together.
You don’t know if marriage is in the cards for you two, but even if it’s not, you think that just being with him as you are now is enough.

How To Deal When Things Get Stressful 😟😩
—————————————
Hey Ladies!
Have y’all ever been so stressed out you legit didn’t know what to do with yourself anymore? The worry, the one thing after the next just draining your life force till you’re a living personification of a prune? Yes? Me too.
I’ve been so stressed to the point of tears, headaches and eye twitching for 2weeks. It was literally making me sick and honestly it’s not healthy and wears the body down. Now I’ve come around, and hashed it out with my care counselor here’s a few things you can do when you literally just can’t right now.
——————————————————————————-
Talk It Out
This one is first because it’s the most important and the most helpful in my opinion. Talk to someone! If you’re blessed enough to have therapist or a counselor utilize them. I’ll preach this until I’m out of breath. This literally saved my tail from lashing out and doing things I may regret 😖. It helped me this time while I was going through it. If you don’t have a therapist, try a friend or a trusted individual. Being & feeling heard is the first step to feeling better. If you don’t have a friend there are resources you can utilize that’ll post for your use in a separate post so it doesn't get lost.
Stop! Put Your Hands Up And Step Away From The Screen!
Screen time. Once upon a time I used to believe this was nonsense oh what a sweet summer child was I. It can be easy (extremely easy especially for my fellow ADHD peeps) to get sucked up into the screen. It could be tumblr, insta, twitter, work, school work, TikTok or just browsing into the abyss. Before you know what should of been 3 hrs online turned into 12hrs. Then you have a headache, your eyes hurt and you don’t know where you are anymore because you’ve been stagnant, probably forgot to eat properly and drink enough water.
Give yourself breaks in between away from the screen. 20-30mins at a time when you can if you have legitimate work that requires the internet. Other wise, try and set a timer and decompress from doom scrolling. Give your brain and eyes a chance to relax.
Physical Self Care
“How are you taking care of yourself?” Asked my counselor at my last session. I couldn’t think of anything. I wasn’t taking care of myself. I didn’t shower already for several days, I barely took time out to eat, I wasn’t moving my body and I sure as hell wasn’t going outside. To answer her I was doing a pretty shit job at taking care of myself and gave myself the excuse that I was focusing on balancing it all, trying to land a job in UX and dedicate my morning, noon and night to it. Who needs to be healthily when I’m bringing myself closer to the life I want? (Spoiler: I wasn’t moving no where because I was too far out of it) (and not being on my medication didn't make this easier..)
I’ve relayed this message so many times about the importance of taking care of yourself and how not doing so won’t help you in the long run or anyone else. So as I’ve broken my own advice, and old habits die hard take care of yourself. Start with one thing at a time. Doesn’t have to be huge. It could be as simple as drinking water, taking 10 mins to decompress, going for a short walk, or just giving yourself time to freshen up. Whatever you need to do to take care of you and just build on it.
Do A Fun Thing
All work and no play makes a lady dull. Under stress it's hard to pull back and live a little. Like, your brain is literally telling you not to because there are so many other pressing things to be concerned about. While that maybe true, that doesn't mean you have to run yourself ragged and kill yourself. Take a moment out to enjoy life and live a little. Honestly, it doesn't have to be going out (though it can be fun) and partying, you can play your favorite video games, meet up with a friend, have a movie marathon! Anything you can think of that's fun go for it! The pressing issue will still be there until you can find a solution for it but, the time you have to enjoy the little things isn't guaranteed so take a moment have some fun.
Acknowledge Your Feelings and Allow Yourself To Feel Them
I know a lot of us think we can handle it all, be power houses and serious 24/7. We can, We're strong, We're tough, We got this even with tears in our eyes. BUT! We're still human. We're complex, We're Fragile, Soft and have so many layers to us. I know we tend to hide or mask our struggles as women and women with adhd so it doesn't look as bad as it feels inside. We don't want to feel the shame, guilt or embarrassment of not being able to juggle everything as well as everyone seems to. We'll be juggling 10-20 plates saying we got this but you know inside you're about to drop 15 of them any second.
Put the plates down. Each and every one of them. Listen to your body and listen well. Your body is telling you're struggling to balance it all and you need to take a step back. Acknowledge that you're having a difficult time right now, allow yourself to feel that. Don't just power through arms/hands shaking and plates breaking because you couldn't hole your arms out for so long with so much. Put them down, ask for help, delegate a few plates to others, or just put some plates aside and only carry what you're physically, mentally and emotionally able to.
Conclusion
Not everything I shared is fool-proof but I can say it could be helpful for you next time you have a hard moment. I think I leave this here with this..
In times of high stress it's alright to not be well alright. It's hard out here and even harder when theirs stress added into the mix. It's okay to cope the best way you know how but, we want to do more than cope we want to heal and do the best for ourselves everyday. It's alright to be vulnerable enough to ask for help and it's okay to put the plates down.. no one's going to yell at you or disown you, the world will not end nor stop if you do. Just you. (If someone does or makes you feel like everything terrible in world will come if you do whats best for you, maybe they shouldn't be in your circle)
Any of my ladies here have difficulty dealing with high stress situations? How do you handle them? I'd love to read and I'm sure others would appreciate the tips and suggestions from peers.

ohhhh, you want to be tricked into perpetual denial? mmm. i’m thinking about tallying up your denial together and marking your date on a calendar. and making you watch as i push the date further and further back if you edge or ruin when you’re not allowed 💗
i’d give you games, too. like after a few days of true no-touch, where even i don’t touch you and you can’t touch your nipples, i’d have you laid out on the couch and tell you not to move while i cover your whole body with my hands and lips. i’d put a collar on you, perhaps one that’s just slightly uncomfortably tight. i’d work my mouth and lips and tongue and teeth up your thighs. with my tongue hovering over your tdick i’d explain that i’ll put my tongue on you for five minutes for every day that you beg me to push your date back by 💖
maybe i’d even have you a little high for this. you’d be so hungry for my touch. when you beg me to deny you one more day i’d make a whole show of setting the timer and moving the date on the calendar. then i’d use my tongue on you, softly at first, and then harder, sucking you, biting you. 30 seconds before the timer runs out i’d have my fingers at your entrance, almost pushing into you but not ❤️ i’d ask you if you want another five minutes of me touching you. i’d let you trade away orgasms for weeks in exchange for just a little more pleasure right now.
of course we’d have to find more ways to punish you if you edged or ruined while i touched you 💓 perhaps i should add a clamp to you for each time that happens?
after everything i’d numb your clit and put a tunnel plug in you and ride your strap until i’ve cum on it as many times as i like. 😇💫
that would be so hot, in the moment i’d be so torn trying to be good and not make it too hard on myself, and with wanting to chase pleasure. plus there’s always a little part of me that wants more time when i’m starting a challenge like that, the idea of being trapped is so intoxicating 😵‍💫💖
maybe at first i would try to resist your game once you laid me out, but i’d be so worked up and want you to touch so bad. just you kissing my thighs softly and describing what you wanted to do to me would send me wild too, and any resolve i had would quickly crumble until i was begging you for my first additional day in denial. if you got me high i would probably be even more desperate for it, my head would get fuzzy with a mix of weed and your tongue and pretty soon i’d forget all the reasons why i would ever ask you to stop. you’d ask if i wanted another day after the first five minutes and i bet i wouldnt even hesitate, just immediately let out a breathless “yes please” while my fingers grip into the sheets
i bet i’d ruin a lot too, at least at first. i’d have clamps up and down the lips of my pussy, you could even use them to hold it open and get better access to my tdick while you tease me. and once my pussy has too many that they would get in your way, you can just start adding them to my nipples and tits instead 🤭 i have a spiked collar too (like internal spikes), maybe if the clamps weren’t convincing enough and i kept letting myself edge you could switch my normal collar out for that one, so any time even i gasp or swallow i’m reminded to keep myself under control for you.
🤭💖 i love that that’s one of your favorite combos, numbed and forced open on a tunnel plug just so you can ignore my pussy completely and ride me like a toy, or make me fuck into you just how you like 🙈 imagine if you left all the clamps on my tits and the spiked collar while you used me too, just a little added spice to remind me of my place 🥴

Why must everything come to an end? It seems cliche to say that we should enjoy what we have in the moment while we still got it, but maybe thats the truth in it all. Everything is fleetin, everything that we call our own, isn’t/ Its just our turn to have it. Everything comes to an end/ Nothing lives on forever. Not even a legacy can make you immortal. But lets go back to enjoying the moment/ The eternal “Now” as many philosophers and religious folk put it. Why is that the best we get? It seems overrated. Just to be happy and at peace with being present. I don’t know but it sounds like a load of shit. Maybe I’ll never expereince it.
I guess if everything lived on forever, nothing would really matter. Well, I take that back, everything ends, and yet, nothing matters still. Every man will be forgotten, every deed will be done. It’s hard not to despair, not to wonder why. It’s hard to motivate yourself to do anything. The abyss is deep and it’s hard to escape. I don’t know what I’ll do. It seems that I’ve caught myself in quite the bind.
At first I thought I could set arbitrary goals for myself. Reach certain numbers, certain measurements, certain achievements. It all pales in the eyes of the fact that nothing I do will stop myself from dying. It’s even more terrifying knowing that I will probably live another 70 years, all with this fact in the back of my mind. How can I go on?
“A man who is a pessimist before 48 knows too much; if he is an optimist after it he knows too little.”
No
Something doesn’t feel right. Why do we all feel this way? Why are we all exhausted, depressed, lonely, and just plain bored? Something is up.
First of all, I will start with myself. Sure you set arbitrary goals, but did you complete them? Sure you made plans, but did you enact them? Do you have everything you want? Do you have the live you want? Did you do the best that you could with what you have? Do you even know what you want? No.
As we can see, it seems that the guilt lies within myself. Even though I have all this time, I didn’t put any of it towards doing anything worth while. Sure it doesn’t really matter, but maybe it could make my life better than just trying to cope with bullshit. I don’t really know what I want for my life. I want a nice physique, I want to be healthy, and I don’t want to work. Er… I don’t want to have a job that feels like a job. Either create something so great that you never have to do anything for the rest of your life, or you rot like everyone else in the work force. That’s my motto. My glimmering spark of hope int he distance. Sure there will be problems on the other side but will they be easier if I know I have the time and energy to deal with them? No job would be nice. Not having to worry about money would be nice. I would become a part-timer if I made it big. Then I could talk to people, do something easy and maybe fun, and talk to cute girls (hopefully!).
Hahahah, I’m a mess. I don’t even feel sad about it. Just confused, but with hope. Misguided maybe. What’s the point of being sad. Maybe my body and mind is trying to tell me something. “Hey dipshit, what are you doing wasting all this time, go out and kill a cow and eat it we need nutrition.” Maybe thats why I’m depressed, I need to go hunting! Sounds like I have cured my problems with some simple questions and have at least given myself something to work on until the inevitable return of my despair. I will have to come up with strategies to keep motivating myself.
Ok, lets reel it in…
So now that myself is taken care of, there’s all of you guys. If we take a look at the suicide rates around the world, the most unhappiest countries are USA, Russia, South Africa, Guyana (what the fuck is happening there btw), Japan, most of europe, Australia. And the lowest rates of suicide are most of Africa, most of South America, China (who knows source of data but I could believe in countryside), Middle East, and the Philippines. So what are we doing that’s so wrong. Well, the obvious answer is society! YEs, that must be it, it’s the blame for everything! Yes and no. I don’t think this 9-5 system is good because we are constantly struggling to pay bills, we are always looking to distract ourselves from our shitty existance, we never have time for friends, family, or ourselves, our attention is being controlled every second of every day, and there’s really nothing you can do about it. Even if you create something great, you become famous and then all the unhappy people want you to make them happy again. It’s like you become a beacon of hope for the masses who can’t provide their own light at the end of the tunnel. That’s why I don’t want to become famous, I don’t want anyone to want something from me. I want to be free too. That is why I respect Sui Ishida a lot for keeping himself anonymous, I think that is the way to do it, especially in this internet age where everyone is the paparazzi. Sure I won’t have people coming up to me int he streets, but I will be able to live my life on my own terms. Maybe Frank Ocean has cracked the code…
Anyways, 9-5 isn’t that good. Sure it gives us a paycheck, but just enough to pay our bills and not enough to give us the ability to leave our jobs. We’ve all heard it a million times, but who ever offers a solution? Everyone likes to complain, but no one tells us what to do, it’s either figure it out yourself, or someone else will fix it… sigh. I guess I’ll be the idiot who tries to speak up.
Based off of my own instinct, I think I have an idea of what to do. It’s possible, but it’s tough.
You can’t give up, and i say this because it’s really easy, just look at my first couple paragraphs hahaha.
Give up all copes
Option 1: Create something worthwhile, business, art, you name it, anything works
Scale it to where you can sell it or have it completely automated or have it “work for you”
Option 2: Cut back your spending to the bare minimum, save everything - will take longer
Leave the places where everyone is killiing themselves, duh
If you can’t then move to the areas where people aren’t killing themselves, most likely a rural area, one that isn’t in the zombie apocalypse or opioid crisis.
Forget about money
Connect with the people there
Farm your own food, please look into regenerative farming
Go from there.
See I really think that this lifestyle we have now is so artificial that everyone just feels like it is fake and meaningless because it is. We’re not dumb, we all know somehting ain’t write. Now I’m not for going in and trying to overthrow the government, think of me opting for something like “Quiet Quitting.”
Whenever I have issues figuring out what I want to do, I like to figure out what I don’t want. I strip away all the excess until I am left with what’s left. I think I should do this with my physical life as well. Go back to basics.
Wow listen to myself babbling on and on. What am I saying? I’m sure this sounds pretty dumb right about now with how jumbled and scrambled my thoughts are. I just felt the need to write and this is what happened. Here I go apologizing and rationalizing, whatever, no edits, I post.

Tumblr media
— alexa, play: less of you by keshi
When you come home
I just got over being less of you
When you leave me, I’m in pieces
Maybe it’s better if we cut it loose
— synopsis: how many nights will you spend in the apartment by yourself before you finally learn that your boyfriend will always value volleyball more than he values you?
— genre: angst & happy endings
— word count: 2.3k
You were used to an empty apartment. It was the cost of dating a member of Japan’s national volleyball team, someone who had to travel constantly and was usually never home. You rarely even saw his face nowadays, and when you did, it was usually when you were cramming for exams and he had to turn in early to wake up in time for practice early the next morning.
Your relationship with Kageyama was difficult after graduating high school, to say the least. Especially since the two of you were taking different paths in life.
You’d thought about it before. He was an accomplished setter on a national team, while you were just trying to pass your university’s exams. Everything you did felt insignificant in comparison to your volleyball genius boyfriend.
The emptiness of the apartment was why the two of you always tried to schedule small dates when it was possible. When Kageyama had days where he knew he’d be let out early from practice, and when you knew you could push back doing homework for a few more hours, you’d cuddle up on the couch after cooking dinner together. Or, you’d force him to take you out to an empty park and guide your stiff boyfriend into swaying to the soft music that you’d play on your phone. No matter what, the night always ended up with your giddy laughter and his rare smiles that proved just how much he loved you.
They were small moments that the two of you would share, where no one else in the world could interrupt.
But it’d been months since the last time you’d spent more than an hour with your boyfriend. You never thought of yourself as needy, but was it too much to ask to wish that he’d keep his promises?
“I’ll be home for dinner, since practice should end at six today.”
He lied. Dinner was sitting cold at the table, and all you could do was stay frozen in your chair with your gaze on the excessive amount of side dishes you’d prepared in anticipation of finally sharing a meal with your favorite person.
You must’ve been sitting in this chair for over an hour. With a quick glance of the clock, a weak smile tugged at your lips.
7:28PM.
You hadn’t checked your phone since you last texted your boyfriend at 7:13PM--
“Let’s talk when you get back.”
Empty promises. You were used to them. Last week, he swore he’d be back in time for your three year anniversary, then forgot about it when it arrived the next day. This dinner was supposed to make up for that, but you must’ve set your expectations too high again.
What would you say when he came back? It was unrealistic for you to wish to be a priority when he had his whole professional career in front of him--he had to focus 100% of his time into that. Yet, was it really unrealistic for you to ask for just 1% of that time?
According to your friends, it wasn’t. But the more you sat alone in this empty apartment, the more you wondered if you really were asking for too much of him.
“Y/N.”
You looked up in surprise, having not heard Kageyama come through the front door. Your eyes softened when you saw the guilt plaguing his typically stoic expression.
“Welcome home, Tobio,” you stood and he instinctively leaned down so you could press a kiss to his cheek. “The food is cold, but we can warm--”
“I’m sorry,” his arms circled around your waist, and you were suddenly pulled into his chest. He buried his face into your hair, his hold on you tightening as if he was afraid you’d run away.
You might’ve.
“You said that last week,” you murmured softly, arms rising to circle around his form and gently rub his back. He was scared--you could feel it in the way he trembled as he held you.
“I’m really sorry,” he repeated, voice quivering.
“You said that last week too,” you laughed quietly.
He wished you’d just yell at him, or scold him with an accusatory tone like you did in the past when he first started making mistakes like these. He never had valid excuses--usually he’d just stay after in the gym to perfect his serves or practice more with other teammates. It was always volleyball that made him forget he had a significant other diligently waiting for him back at home--putting off their own responsibilities because his very rare free time was precious.
But was yours not? You had asked him that once, calmly, when he came home late again. And he had tilted his head and pointed out you had more free time than him, to which you took seconds to process before smiling bitterly.
“You’re not hungry?” you asked quietly, palms still gently running over his broad back to soothe him.
“No,” he murmured into your hair, breathing in your scent and imprinting it into his memory. If he let you go now, would you leave him?
“Liar,” you whispered nonchalantly, and he flinched. “You haven’t eaten since lunch, right? It’s late, let’s eat.”
“Don’t want to.”
“You’re acting like a child, Tobio,” you sighed, pulling your head back slightly so you could meet his sharp blue eyes, filled with regret. “If you’re not hungry, I am, so let’s eat.”
You paused, before reaching up to gently hold his face. Your thumbs brushed over his cheeks, and he leaned into your touch.
“...you can’t avoid this forever, you know,” you told him softly, and his brows furrowed as he closed his eyes.
“...alright,” his voice sounded pained as he pulled away to sit across from the chair you’d sat in for over an hour.
You popped the dishes into the microwave quickly, setting them in front of him one by one before sliding a bowl of rice in his direction. He usually loved your cooking, but now he wasn’t sure if he’d even be able to swallow a bite of it with the knowledge that this may be the last meal the two of you share together.
The apartment was silent, save for the beeping of the microwave. Kageyama stared longingly at your back, watching the way you leaned against the counter and brushed your hair behind your ear while waiting for the microwave timer to go off.
When was the last time he actually looked at you? His many trips abroad, his lack of acknowledgement of your own accomplishments and struggles, his stupid passion for volleyball, it had all ruined your relationship.
He could only hope that you would forgive him, one more time.
You slid back into the seat across from his and settled in. He was anxious. You could tell by the way he couldn’t look you in the eye, chopsticks picking at his rice as he waited for you to speak first. His tall figure stiffened at the sound of your sigh.
“Might not taste good now since it’s not as fresh, but,” you pushed a few dishes his way with a sad smile. “I worked hard to prepare dinner, could you try it?”
His heart clenched painfully in his chest. What was he doing while you were excitedly making dinner for him? He never thought of you during practice--not once, even though he knew how much he loved you. He hated that about himself.
He lifted the food to his lips and let his vision cloud over with guilt as he chewed and swallowed.
“...It’s delicious,” he murmured weakly as your smile grew slightly.
“...I’m glad,” is all you managed to muster before digging into the meal you prepared for the two of you.
“I don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness again,” he said quickly, slim fingers gripping his chopsticks tight enough to turn them white. “But I still don’t want you to leave.”
You were quiet, stiffly bringing pieces of rice to your lips and forcing yourself to chew. Every action was methodical, as if you were merely acting out actions that you knew you would normally perform if your heart wasn’t breaking into tiny bits and pieces.
“...I love you, Tobio,” you whispered quietly. “So much. I still do. More than anything. But it hurts me more because I love you so much.”
He dropped his utensils and reached across the table to grab your hands. You flinched away and he cursed, bringing his hands back to his sides before running them through his hair in frustration.
“What can I do,” he asked weakly, voice shaking, “to keep you with me?”
“I don’t know anymore,” you tried to force another smile, but your lower lip quivered and the tears you held back on lonely nights started to drip down your cheeks.
“Please,” he stood, the sound of his chair skidding back against the floors barely registered in your ears as he hurried to kneel by your side. “Please, I’m sorry.”
“That’s all you ever say,” you cried loudly, tone finally accusatory as he’d initially wished. He took your hands into his shaking ones, watching as your tears stained the pale skin of his knuckles. “You never know what you’re apologizing for, but you always, always just say sorry as if that will make any of this any better.”
“You need to tell me--” he tried to reason.
“I’ve told you!” you ripped your hands away from his almost violently, ignoring the way the hurt in his blue eyes caused your already broken heart to sting in pain. “I’ve told you how much you coming home late hurts, how I hate when you promise that you’ll be home and then break those promises the same day, how you thinking your time is more important than mine makes me feel insignificant--”
You cut yourself off with a weak sob, bringing your hands up to hide your face in your palms.
“But you never listen! You never learn. Volleyball will always be more important than me, and I can’t find it in myself to blame you for that,” you wailed as you rubbed the back of your knuckles against your eyes to try and stop the tears from flowing, “What am I supposed to do now, Tobio? How do I leave you when I love you so much?”
You felt warm arms wrap you into a familiar embrace, and your tears soaked into your boyfriend’s athletic jacket.
“You deserve better,” he told you minutes later, after your sobs had calmed down. His palm continued to gently draw circles against your lower back--an action that he knew would soothe you. “You deserve so much better than me. You know I’m bad with words, I’m inconsiderate, I suck at putting others before me, and I’m stupid.”
You laughed tearfully.
“You do so much for me,” he murmured, and your eyes fluttered closed. “You explain to me how you feel so I can try and be better, you deal with my bluntness and verbalize how much it hurts you, you tell me when I’m acting better than everyone else and humble me, and you even used to come with me when I had to attend supplemental classes in high school.”
“You really were stupid,” you commented, and he laughed weakly.
“And you loved me, through all of that,” he lamented.
“Mm,” you sighed quietly. “Yeah. I loved you.”
“And I love you,” he responded, a bit shy to be confessing it despite your long relationship. “So give me one more chance to prove that I’ve changed for the better because of you.”
He pulled back to cup your cheeks, bringing your teary gaze up to his and brushing his thumbs over the redness under your eyes. His heart hurt. He hated making you cry, and he hated himself for making you cry this much over him.
“...one more chance,” you mumbled, turning your head to kiss his palm. His brows furrowed, and tears pricked at his eyes.
Quickly, he brought his forearm to cover his wet irises from your sight. You laughed quietly, hands reaching up to try and pull his arm away.
“Are you crying because of me, Tobio? Did I manage to make the king of the court cry?” you teased with a weak smile.
“Shut up,” he grumbled, cheeks reddening as he turned to look away from you. “You know I hate it when you call me that dumb nickname.”
“And I made the king kneel in front of me too? I should repent,” you giggled, taking his free hands into your own.
You nearly choked on your laughter when your boyfriend suddenly dipped down to pick you up into his arms. Your arms wrapped hurriedly around his neck as you turned to look at him with wide eyes.
“Tobio--!”
“I’m making use of my last chance, and I’m going to start making it up to you now,” he told you firmly, carrying you into your room and placing you onto your shared bed.
“Our dinner,” you grumbled with a pout. “I worked hard to make that…”
“And I’ll eat it tomorrow,” he caged you in his arms, hovering above you with a soft look in his sharp azure eyes. Your gaze fluttered up to his handsome face, and you grinned as a hand rose up to gently cup his cheek. He tilted his head to press a kiss to your wrist. “Can I prove to you how sorry I am?”
You laughed softly as he trailed kisses up your arm to your neck, then finally pressing his lips to yours lovingly.
“Don’t take advantage of your last chance,” you murmured, your breath mingling with his as he pressed feather-like pecks to your lips.
“I’d be even more of an idiot if I did.”

Healing Process
Spencer Reid x Reader
Warnings - None that I can think of
Summary - After Spencer got shot the bau put him on a two week leave to recover. He’s not taking it well so you try to help him find the good in all of this.
This takes place during season five so read at your own risk.
Tumblr media
"Spencer come on," Y/n says as she moves to her boyfriend's side as he tries to get off the couch, "you need to lie down."
"I finished my book I'm just getting another," He says struggling to grab at his crutches. She moves over to him as Spencer gives up and sits back on the couch. "Can you-?"
Y/n grabs the stack of books he pulled earlier to read and sits them down on the table beside Spencer.
"Anything else Spencer?" She asks as she moves to adjust the pillow under his knee lightly. He tenses. Clearly in pain. "Do you want something for the pain maybe?"
"No," He says at once. She nods lightly. Knowing how uncomfortable he is with the idea of taking any pain meds after his past issues. She moves to tuck a piece of hair behind his ear. He groans slightly. Pain clearly too much for him. He tries not to show it. Instead, he lifts his book up. Trying to focus on the words.
"I'm going to start lunch," Y/n says softly. He doesn't acknowledge the statement. She moves into the kitchen. Gathering the supplies to cook. She's trying to stay positive. However, every sneak of glance she gets at Spencer just reinforces her worry. "Emily we both are fine- I promise."
"What's he doing?"
"He's reading," Y/n tells the other girl, "and before you even ask yes I'm keeping him off his feet."
"How's he doing though?" Emily asks. Y/n looks over at her boyfriend flipping through the pages of the book. "Okay, I hope?"
"Uh he's doing- alright," She says softly, "mostly." Y/n sighs as she goes to stir the soup. "He's reading a lot... Has been since he got released from the hospital." Emily chuckles lightly. "He's read these books a hundred times- maybe more. I'm surprised he can still stand them." Y/n laughs lightly. She moves to look over at Spencer. He was trying to get up. "Emily I'll call you back- Spencer." She sets the phone down as she rushes towards the man. "Spencer come on you know you can't keep getting up."
"I just need to go to the bathroom," Spencer assures the girl. She moves to his side.
"Then let me help you," She says as she moves to support his side, "come on."
"I've got it-"
"Just let me help you, love," She says softly, "come on Spencer." He sighs letting her help support his weight. She gently helps him along the hall to the bathroom. He takes over once inside. Making a point to shut the door on her. She sighs. "Just yell when you need help out." She hears him mumble beyond the door. She moves to step towards the living room. Straightening up the stacks of books and folding the blankets. The door opening catches her attention. She moves to try to help him. He pulls away slightly.
"I've got it," Spencer says firmly.
"It's alright I can help-"
"I said I've got it!" Spencer snaps. Y/n backs away. Clearly surprised by the tone. He sighs lightly. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to yell. It's just- I have to be able to do this on my own." She nods. He moves using the crutches to move along the hallway. She watches him closely. Making sure he isn't hurt in any way. Once he gets back to the couch he starts to fall. She rushes to his side to grab him. Helping him onto the couch. "Dammit." He growls.
"Spencer it takes a bit you won't get it overnight," She tells him, "but you're doing so well Spence." He huffs loudly. A guy like he isn't used to not being able to learn something quickly.
"I don't feel like it," He groans.
"I know but you're already getting better love," Y/n assures him as she carefully sits beside him. She reaches for his hand. Gripping it gently. "Let me get you something to eat." She stands moving to get him something to eat. Making sure the placement is neat. Hoping to give him some kind of comfort. Once she hands it over he still seems slightly upset. She knows this is weighing on him. He hates feeling useless like this. "Eat up Spencer."
"Thanks," He says softly. Y/n moves to help him prop his knee up. He doesn't look at her. She tries not to take it to heart.
"Need anything else?"
"No I think I'm fine," He says. She nods. She moves to sit beside him. Grabbing her laptop to work on her own work. Despite the fact, Rossi sent them both home until Spencer was better she was trying to help them as best she can. I mean losing three agents at once is a huge hit on the force. But after Hotch was shot he needed time off- and of course, Spencer needed time to recover himself. And if Spencer can't walk he can't exactly take care of himself. So Rossi sent you with him. "What's the new case?"
"I'm not allowed to tell you," Y/n says as she runs through the background check, "Rossi's orders. Sorry love."
"Come on I can help," He says leaning towards her. She tilts the screen so he can't see it. He rolls his eyes lightly. "Come on-"
"Spencer you should focus on resting," She tells him, "besides you won't be on this case. They are already in Arizona giving them the profile- your job would be done anyways."
"You know it doesn't end at the profile," He points out.
"Yeah- but your jurisdiction does," She tells him, "this part is my job. Tech lady remember."
"Just let me help-"
"Spencer," She says firmly, "I don't need your help. I'm perfectly fine running a background check by myself. You should eat while it's still hot." He sighs. Leaning back to start at the soup again. "Besides- I have their guy right here. I'm sending it to JJ and Rossi now." He nods lightly. She shuts her laptop and moves to place her hand on his thigh carefully. Making sure not to mess with his knees or bandages.
"I just feel useless like this," He sighs, "I mean Hotch is already out. They need me there- they need us there." She smiles lightly. Trying not to show pity in the look. "It just sucks."
"I know babe," She says taking his hand, "but you need to be here recovering. If you don't take care of it now then you won't get to go back on the field. And that is so much worse than 2 weeks out." He nods.
"I guess you're right," He says softly.
"I always am," She smiles, "besides it's not all bad here." He raises a brow. Wondering how this could in any way be something other than bad. "We get to spend our time together. Not looking at dead bodies." He smiles lightly. "And we don't have a no PDA rule here."
"That's true," He says smirking, "you know there was a study- it hasn't been completely proven yet but it's worth a shot?"
"Yeah what is it, Spence?"
"Rumor says a kiss can make someone feel better," He says smirking lightly. She moves gently pulling him into a soft kiss. He deepens it immediately. Moving his hands to the sides of her face. He takes control. They both are clearly enjoying it. She chuckles as she breaks the kiss.
"Feel any better?" She asks.
"Hmm, I think we should try it again," Spencer says, "I don't think it took its full effect." She nods. He moves meeting her for another sweet kiss.  This time he's the one to break the kiss. A big smile stretched across his face. "I think this study has a point. I feel much better."
"Sure you do lover boy," Y/n says smiling lightly, "now how about some ice? Might take the swelling down at least."
"That would be fantastic," Spencer says. She moves off to get her boyfriend the ice back. He smiles lightly as he watches her move off. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad he thinks to himself. They don't get much time with just the two of them outside of work and the free time they normally get is spent catching up on sleep. It's nice for them to have moments where they can just enjoy being around each other. Sure he wishes the situation was different but he can't exactly change that now.
"Alright here is your ice," She says handing it over to him, "10 minutes on. I'll set a timer for you."
"Thank you," He says smiling lightly.
"You're welcome Spencer," She says brightly as she sits beside him again. She moves to grab her laptop again but Spencer stops her. "What's up?"
"Can we try that independent study again?"
"Anytime Spencer," She says meeting him in another soft kiss.
Maybe these two weeks wouldn't be so bad.

Y/N’s first week didn’t go as great as she expected.
She naively thought things would be good after the first day, which had started a little wonky but ended up being better once she met Cas and Charlie. She had become really friendly with them, and she was glad that they were a highlight of each day. Her 7th graders were great, but she had to do a lot of work with them to make them come out of their shells. Her 8th graders on the other hand… she just didn’t understand how to get through to them. Some of them were loud and disruptive, a couple of them were bullying another girl, and others just didn’t seem to care at all. Ben was a good kid, but he got easily swayed by the loud ones. They had so much potential, and they had to start being better if they were ever going to survive high school.
She walked out of the grocery store, pushing a shopping cart with two heavy brown bags. After finishing up at school, she decided to go and buy a few essentials plus some stuff to make dinner. She was looking forward to a nice meal she cooked and a glass of wine, maybe two. As she drove through town to get home, she smiled. Despite everything, Lawrence was a peaceful town. She had to hope that she could strap in and really get through to the kids, so that living here would be worth it.
As she drove down her street, she smiled as she saw Dean sitting on his porch steps. She pulled into her driveway and got out of the car, smiling as she saw him talking on the phone. She walked over to her trunk and opened it, picking up the two bags in there. She left the trunk open, as she struggled to hold the bags, cursing the guy at the check-out for filling them so much to save on bags. Suddenly, there was a pressure on one of the bags, as it ripped at the bottom, not being able to handle the weight of the items. Two cans fell and started rolling down her driveway.
“Shit!” she yelled, as she manoeuvred the bags and tried to hold them both in one arm.
Dean, who was still on the phone as he sat on the porch steps, saw everything from across the street.
“Sammy, let me call you back” He quickly hung up the phone and rushed across the street. He got to the end of the driveway just in time and swept up the rolling cans. Y/N saw him and beamed, relieved.
“Thank you” she breathed heavily.
“No problem, can’t have run away cans on the street” he smiled, as he continued to hold them. “Here, let me get that for ya.”
He picked up the broken bag from her arm and held it, his hand at the bottom.
“Between my furniture and my groceries, I think you’re my savior” she laughed.
Dean shook his head, a smirk on his face. “I take the job very seriously.”
“I hope that call wasn’t important?” she asked, knowing he had been on the phone with someone.
“Nah, just my pain in the ass little brother. It’s okay, he’ll get over it” he replied, laughing slightly.
Y/N laughed with him, getting lost in his green eyes again. He looked even more sexy and handsome today, now wearing a red and black plaid shirt on top of a black t-shirt and dark blue jeans. She had told herself she’d wait to ask him for dinner, and now she couldn’t think of a more perfect time, having just saved the items for dinner.
“Hey, um… are you doing anything tonight? I was going to make dinner for myself but if you’re free-” she started to ask but got cut off by a voice coming from his house.
“Dean!” a female voice called as she came out onto his porch.
Y/N’s heart sunk as Ben’s mother, Lisa, came out and looked around. When she spotted him, she waved him in.
“Can you help with dinner?” she asked and then walked back inside the house. Y/N had never seen which house Lisa and Ben had come from that day, so this was shocking. The guy she was kind of crushing on was Lisa’s boyfriend. Ben’s dad. Fucking great.
“Sorry, I didn’t realize-” Y/N started but Dean shook his head.
“It’s okay, Y/N. I should go” he helped her take the bags inside the house and then awkwardly stood there.
“I’ll see ya around” he gave her a quick nod before he rushed off, before she could say anything.
Y/N frowned as she closed the door behind him. She leaned her head against it as she groaned. Why did she have to start liking him without knowing his situation? She moved away from the door and walked into the kitchen. She was going to get started on dinner for one and try to stop thinking about her ridiculously good-looking neighbor.
Dean walked into his house, finding Lisa in the kitchen. She had a blank expression on her face, as she chopped up the vegetables.
“What do you need?” he asked.
“Why were you talking to Y/N?” she asked in return, abruptly.
Dean blinked a few times, confused by her question. “She was just struggling with some broken grocery bags. I helped her.”
“Whatever” she mumbled, as she moved away to the stove.
Dean shook his head, walking out of the kitchen and to the backyard. Lisa was suddenly in one of her moods and he needed to get away. He usually hid out in the garage until things cooled down with her.

Y/N was thankful to have finished her first week and now move into another Saturday. She still had a few boxes that needed to be emptied, having done most of them last week and then sporadically through the week. She was going to do that in the morning and then look over her plans for the next week of school, before chilling that night and having a drink.
After a quick breakfast and putting on one of her phone playlists this time, she got started as her favorite Kaleo song came through the speakers. She smiled sadly as she put up some of the pictures she hadn’t yet, her heart aching knowing she had left her family behind. One of her with her sister and parents. One of her sister and brother-in-law with her nieces; the younger one having just been born before Y/N had to leave. One of just her and her sister. This was the one thing that made her regret leaving: her family. She stepped back as she looked at the photos on the mantel above the fireplace, remembering all the wonderful times she had with her loved ones.
The doorbell rang, interrupting her thoughts. As she walked to the door, Y/N looked up at the clock, seeing it was 12.30pm already. She opened the door, her smile becoming a bit forced once she saw it was Emily Charlton, one of her middle-aged divorced neighbors. She had already been over several times that week with baked goods, which she ended up feeding to the birds after one bite.
“Hi, Emily. What can I do for you?” she asked, politely and hoping the woman would leave soon.
“I’m just here to find out if you got the fliers in your mail about the barbecue today” she replied, her big white teeth beaming.
“Oh, yeah, I did see that” Y/N said, remembering the two fliers she had received.
“Well, it’s at Sid and Olivia’s and starts at 1, and it would be good for everyone to meet you” Emily continued to smile. She pointed at the house, then primped her blonde hair with her long acrylic nails.
Y/N rolled her eyes while she wasn’t looking. “I’m sorry, Emily, I can’t. I just have a lot of work to do-” she started but Emily waved a finger, her fake nails looking like they could gauge an eye out.
“Nonsense, I absolutely insist on you coming to lunch. There’s still so many on the street you haven’t met yet” she insisted.
Y/N sighed, shaking her head. It was better to give in than keep arguing. “Sure.”
Emily laughed in a high pitch tone, making Y/N cringe. “Wonderful!”
“Great” she mumbled, under her breath.
“So, we’ll see you soon, and uh” Emily looked her up and down, causing Y/N to frown. She looked down at herself, dressed in just a loose, plain red t-shirt and her boyfriend jeans. Emily smiled one more time, fake as ever, before she strutted off.
Y/N closed the door, wanting to shut everyone and everything out, but she wasn’t going to do that. She was going to glam herself up and go to the barbecue, to rub it in Emily Charlton’s face that she could be fake all she wanted, it wasn’t going to affect her.
She frowned as she thought about how she shouldn’t go there empty-handed. If she did, she’d probably be the talk of the street and be highly judged for it. She normally didn’t care what people thought of her, but in this case, if she could avoid it, she would. It was better to be slightly late. Plus, who showed up right on time, anyway? She quickly searched around in her kitchen cupboards and found a box of Betty Crocker brownies in her pantry. She quickly made the pre-mix. She smiled. She was good, even in a time crunch. No one needed to know they were from a box. She put the brownies into the oven and set the timer.
Y/N showered and washed her hair, drying it into a natural, summer-y look once she got out. She got dressed into a red, cap sleeve summer dress, with a small white flower print on it. Looking at the clock, she saw that it was 1pm.
When the timer went off, she walked back into the kitchen and took out the brownies, waiting for them to cool. She went back into her room and applied her make-up, keeping it simple with a little foundation, some mascara and a little lip gloss. She put on her wedge heels and her small bag across her body. After a few minutes when she was dressed and ready, she cut the brownies and put them in a container. She put her sunglasses on, before walking out of the house. She locked up and put her keys in her bag, climbing down her porch stairs before walking down the street.
Y/N was nervous to be around so many people, hearing the sounds of music and laughter coming from Sid’s house. Especially if most of those people turned out to be like Emily Charlton, but she couldn’t let them scare her if they were. She wouldn’t let anyone overwhelm her and push her around again. She had suffered enough the first time, and she wouldn’t let it happen again.
She saw some people walk in through the side entrance to the backyard, as some older teens played touch football in the front yard. Y/N followed behind those people, looking out for Sid or Olivia. She looked around the large backyard as Nathaniel Rateliff crooned away from the large speaker on the back porch. She had seen them around, Emily telling her who they were, so Y/N hoped she could spot them properly and didn’t confuse them for someone else. Luckily, she heard Emily’s high pitched “Olivia!” and saw her hugging another blonde woman.
Y/N walked over, putting her sunglasses on her head. She smiled as she approached Olivia, laughing to herself as her face looked just as uncomfortable to be around Emily.
“Olivia, hi. I’m Y/N” she said, smiling.
“Oh yes, so good to finally meet you” Olivia smiled, shaking her hand. “Emily told me about you, welcome to the neighborhood.”
“Hello again, Y/N” Emily’s fake smile beaming once again.
“Hi” Y/N nodded at her before turning back to Olivia. “I thought I’d bring a little something.”
She handed over the container.
“Oh, you didn’t have to, but thank you. Okay, Sid’s handling the grill and there’s already plenty, so please help yourself. Can I get you a beer? Wine? Something stronger to deal with Emily?” Olivia laughed, when Emily had walked off to speak to someone else.
Y/N’s eyes widened with surprise, as she laughed too. She liked Olivia already.
“A beer would be great” she continued to laugh.
Olivia bent down and took a beer out of an ice bucket. She opened the lid with a bottle opener and handed it to her.
“So, what do you do, Y/N?” Olivia asked, as she sipped her wine. She started walking towards the food table and Y/N followed beside her.
“I’m an English teacher, junior high” Y/N replied, before taking a sip of her beer.
Olivia stopped and smiled at her, a fondness in her eyes, which Y/N would’ve found strange but something about her look was pleasant.
“My mom was an English teacher. She passed last year, but it still feels like yesterday” Olivia quietly told her.
“I’m sorry, Olivia” Y/N gave her a sad smile. “She must’ve been amazing, if she was anything like her daughter.”
Olivia beamed; her eyes slightly watery. She wrapped an arm around Y/N’s shoulders as they walked towards the food table.
Y/N’s smile dropped when she saw who was standing at the table. Lisa was shifting things around, making place for everything on the table. Dean, who was dressed in jeans and black half-sleeve button-up shirt, came up behind her. She turned her head and kissed him on the cheek. Y/N felt a tightness in her chest but chose to ignore it. Olivia walked over to the table and placed her container down, making some small talk with Lisa. Dean turned his head, smiling when he saw Y/N.
Dean could feel his heart racing. She was stunning, every single thing about her. From her hair, to the way she looked in that summer dress, which had a slit on the side, giving a peek of her smooth leg. He couldn’t be looking at her, not with Lisa standing right next to him. Y/N smiled in return, getting lost in his features yet again. He was so incredibly good-looking, it hurt to look at him.
Y/N looked away from him when Olivia tapped her shoulder. She smiled at her, trying not to let it show that she and Dean had been staring at each other.
“Aren’t they perfect together?” Olivia said, not really seeking a reply as she smiled at Dean and Lisa.
“Yeah.” Y/N smile faltered.
“So, help yourself. I’m just going to check in with Sid and see if he needs anything. I’ll be back” Olivia walked off, leaving her to go to her husband.
Y/N walked closer to the table, trying to smile when Lisa noticed her.
“Hi, good to see you” Lisa smiled. “Can I get you anything?”
Y/N shook her head. “No, I’ll help myself, thanks.”
“Okay” Lisa turned from her to Dean. “I’m just going to check where Ben is, can you plate some for me?” she leaned in and kissed his cheek.
“Sure” he nodded, before grabbing a plate and putting food on it.
Y/N smiled as Lisa walked past her and then looked over at Dean. She didn’t know for sure, but it felt like Lisa was being a bit aloof with her. She chose to ignore it for now. She walked closer to the table, and Dean looked up at her.
“It’s really good to see you” he said. The way he was looking at her was different to how he had been looking at Lisa.
She felt her cheeks get a little hot. “It’s good to see you, too.” Y/N started to put some food on her plate.
“So, how-” he started but was cut off by a shrill voice calling out her name.
“Y/N! Get over here, young lady!” Emily yelled from across the yard. She had a gaggle of middle-aged women around her.
She turned back to Dean; her eyes wide. “Is there any way I can get out of going there?”
Dean laughed. “Afraid not.”
She groaned, as she closed her eyes. “Wish me luck.”
“You don’t need it” Dean smirked.
Y/N opened her eyes, smiling when she saw him smirking at her.
“You can handle a few divorcee’s and housewives” he assured her.
She bit her lip, as she shook her head. Somehow, he had managed to ease her mind. “Thanks.”
Y/N took her plate and beer, throwing her shoulders back and walking over there with confidence. Dean admired her as she walked away, checking her out as her hips swayed. It was dangerous to be doing that with so many people around, but he took his chance. He picked up two plates and walked away from the table, in search of Lisa.
Tumblr media
Y/N couldn’t hide the boredom on her face, as the divorcee’s and housewives asked her questions about her life.
“So, Y/N, are you seeing anyone special?” one woman asked.
“Nope” Y/N answered around a mouthful of hot dog, not really caring about anything other than food at that point.
“Why not? A pretty, young girl like you” equally nosey Jill, added.
Y/N shrugged, still eating. “I just got here and want to take my time, you know?”
Emily shook her head. “No, there’s definitely more to the story. It was a bad break up, wasn’t it? That’s why you moved here.”
Y/N frowned, glaring at Emily. “You know, it’s really not something I want to talk about.”
“Oh, Y/N, if you don’t talk to us, who can you talk to? We’re here to help” Emily gave her the best sympathetic face she could probably muster.
“You know what? You could help me with this” Y/N handed Emily the empty plate. “I’m going to get another beer.”
She didn’t stick around to see the shock on Emily’s face to her abrupt departure and Y/N’s plate in her hand.
Y/N felt the anger simmering in her belly as she walked away. The last thing she needed was advice from that woman. She just wanted to grab a beer and go sit somewhere in the front yard, away from everyone else. She picked up a bottle and opened it, taking a sip as she walked away. She walked out to the front yard and looked around. There was a large tree with good shade near the fence, which would be nice and secluded. As she walked closer, she noticed someone leaning against it. She walked around, smiling when she saw Dean with a beer in his hands.
“Mind if I join you?” she asked.
“‘Course not” he smirked, as he shifted over.
“I seriously had to get away from those women” Y/N groaned, sitting down on the ground next to him.
“Yeah, they’ll do that to ya” he laughed, sipping his beer.
“Well, I handled it like you said” she smiled, holding her bottle towards him.
He nodded, approvingly, clinking his bottle to hers. “Nice.”
A comfortable silence fell between them, as Fleetwood Mac could be heard from the backyard. Y/N looked at him, appreciating his features now that she was closer. Freckles scattered under his eyes and on his nose, and his eyes were even more striking up close.
“So…” she trailed off, thinking of what to ask him. “Did you grow up here?”
He nodded, a small smile appearing on his face. “Yeah, born and raised. My parents are still in the same house we grew up in. My little brother lives in Kansas City with his wife.”
“Are you and your brother close?” she asked.
“Yeah, it’s always been me and Sammy. I mean, don’t get me wrong, my parents were good with us, but there were times when they’d fight, and I’d have to look out for him” he replied, looking down at his bottle.
Y/N frowned, and Dean noticed. “Oh, don’t worry, my parents were great, it’s just sometimes… they didn’t see eye to eye, you know? They’re good now, though. Have been for a long time.”
She smiled, seeing how fondly he spoke of his family. They must’ve been close. She was missing hers a lot.
“What about you?” he asked in return.
“I was born and raised in Rhinebeck, New York. No brother, but sister instead. She’s married to a great guy, so he definitely feels like a brother” she told him, a sad smile on her face. “They have two beautiful daughters, one was just born before I left so I’m going to miss seeing her.”
“Wow. From New York to Kansas” he muttered, laughing. She joined in. “Why the big move?” he wondered, as he took another sip of his beer.
“I…” she breathed out, shaking her head. “I needed to get away. It just became… too much.”
Dean nodded, but he understood that that wasn’t the whole story.
“But this is a great town, not too different from back home, so that’s a plus” she said, smiling at him.
Dean smiled in return. “That’s great.”
They looked into each other eyes, and she felt that familiar fluttering in her stomach.
Don't, don't break the spell It would be different and you know it will You, you make loving fun And I don't have to tell you but you're the only one
The words of the song were beginning to freak her out as they maintained eye contact. Y/N quickly looked away. This was unsafe ground they were about to tread.
“How’d you meet Lisa?” she asked, quickly changing the subject.
Dean breathed deep, with a long exhale. “She was here from Indiana visiting some friends, and we met one night at a bar. It was a one-time thing, but then a few months later she moved here with Ben when she got a job opportunity. We met up again… and we’ve been together three years.”
“Wait…” she thought about everything he just said, suddenly confused. “Ben’s-”
“Yeah, he’s… not mine, technically. It feels like he is, though” Dean finished for her.
“Gosh, I really should’ve guessed with the last names” she shook her head, rolling her eyes at herself for not realizing sooner.
“It’s all good, Y/N” he chuckled.
“Well, you guys look really close” she said, trying to sound happy.
“Yeah” he huffed, knowing he and Lisa were far from close these days.
Maybe coming to talk to him hadn’t been such a good idea. She seriously had to start liking a taken guy, didn’t she? At least he wasn’t married. Oh yeah, Y/N. That makes it better she thought, as she closed her eyes at her own stupid thoughts. Though she had to wonder, if things were great between him and Lisa then why was he sitting out here, far away from her?
Dean looked up and looked into her eyes again. Sitting there and talking to her about Lisa just didn’t feel natural. It really did feel like he was living a lie, it had felt like that since way before Y/N showed up.
Y/N quickly looked away from him. She needed to leave. She quickly stood up, dusting her dress off.
“I should really get going. I have a lot of work to do” she said, turning to him as he stood up.
“On a Saturday?” he asked, confused. Dean took the empty beer bottle out of her hand. The brush of his fingers against hers sent a tingling sensation through her arm and over her body.
“Life of a teacher” she quickly joked, pulling her hand away.
Dean huffed a laugh, scratching the back of his neck. “So, I’ll see you around?”
She nodded, a small smile on her face. “Yeah.”
Dean looked back at the back yard, before looking at her. “I better find Lisa.”
“Thanks for the chat” she said, playing nervously with the strap of her bag.
“No problem” he smirked.
He slowly walked backwards and gave her a small wave, before turning and walking away.
Y/N watched him walk to the back yard before she turned and walked down the sidewalk. She quickly made it home, closing the door behind her. She walked into her bedroom, dropping her bag on the chair and then stripped off her dress and shoes. She changed into her large sleep shirt, which came down to just above her knees. She threw her hair up in a bun and walked into her bathroom, taking the make-up wipes to rub off her make-up. She washed her face and wiped it down with a small towel, flicking the light off as she left.
As she went about that routine, her mind was on Dean. Just a short amount of time to talk, a few looks between them, a small touch of his hand against hers, and she couldn’t stop thinking about him. There was an air about him, almost like you could trust him completely. He would take care of you and never let anything happen to you. There was a sadness behind his smile, however, and she could feel that it had something to do with life at home. He and Lisa weren’t the perfect couple they wanted people to see them as.
She walked out into the living room, her phone in hand. She dropped down on the couch, tucking her legs up. She scrolled through her phone, finding the name of her best friend, Katie, and sending her a quick text to see if she could talk. They had been best friends since college, and right now, she needed to talk to her about Dean. Maybe she could give her some advice on how to stop the way she was feeling. When she got a text back saying she could talk, Y/N called her.
“Hey, sweetie” Katie greeted.
Y/N smiled, closing her eyes. “You have no idea how good it is to hear your voice.”
“It’s good to hear yours too. Though… you do sound a bit… off” her friend’s concern was evident in her voice.
Y/N scoffed and thought about what to say. “Well, it’s been a week in a new town… and I already have a guy problem.”
“Wow, that was quick” Katie commented.
“Yeah, well…” Y/N trailed off, playing with the edge of her shirt on her knee. “I wasn’t expecting for it to happen so fast, either. Especially after Ethan.”
“Okay, what’s his name?” Katie asked.
“Dean” a smile grew on Y/N face’s as she said his name, but it quickly dropped. “But before you say anything, he’s with someone and she’s got a kid, who’s practically a son to him.”
Katie let out a whistle. “Wow.”
“Yeah” Y/N agreed.
A silence fell between them, and Y/N knew that Katie was thinking.
“Well, as much as you probably don’t want to hear it, I think you got to let this one go” she said, finally.
Y/N sighed. “You’re right. I was already thinking it. I guess I just needed someone else to say to me, so I didn’t do anything stupid.”
“You’re a far more rational person than I am, so I doubt you would’ve” Katie reassured her.
Y/N huffed, rolling her eyes. “You haven’t seen what he looks like.”
“Well, photos when and if you get the chance” Katie laughed.
Y/N laughed, shaking her head.
They spent another half hour catching up on everything back home. It made Y/N miss everything even more, but she was glad to get the latest news. After they ended their chat, she got up from the couch when she noticed what the time was. She started fixing herself something for dinner, when she heard voices from across the street. She looked out the window, seeing people going home from Sid and Olivia’s.
Y/N watched Dean, Lisa and Ben walk back to their house. Dean and Lisa were holding hands, as Ben walked in front of them. Y/N felt her heart sink, seeing them look like a happy couple. Though it seemed that things weren’t all that great, or at least that was the impression she got from the way Dean looked at her.
Y/N shook her head and went back to making dinner. Once she was done, she settled in on the couch with her plate, a glass of wine and FRIENDS on Netflix.
It was silly of her to think that anything would ever happen with Dean. Even if he wasn’t with Lisa, she had only been around Dean twice. That wasn’t enough time to start thinking of him. This was just a crush, and it would go away soon.
Or so she hoped.

Two to Three (Chicago Fire)
Chicago Fire
   Y/N tells Matt Casey that they’re parents-to-be.
Warnings: Uhhhhhhh, pregnancy I guess?
Requested = Yes
Tumblr media
“Shit,” You cursed underneath your breath.
   You were sitting in the bathroom of Firehouse 51 after throwing up your breakfast when it dawned on you that you were late.
   If it had just been a few days, you probably would have just brushed it off but it was now over a week and you were starting to get worried that you might be pregnant.
“God, how did I get myself into this?” You muttered and pushed yourself onto your feet.
“Get yourself into what?” A voice asked, making you jump out of your skin.
   It was Gabby, your partner on ambo 61.
“Nothing,” You mumbled and went over to the sink to rinse off your face. When you were done, you looked up to see Gabby giving you a skeptical look.
“What?” You asked and ripped off a piece of paper towel to dry your hands.
   Gabby raised an eyebrow, “You sure it’s nothing?”
Ambo 61, child in distress at 14 Bermount Road
   Instead of replying to her question, you hurried off to the ambo, trying to avoid the topic.
~~~
“Hey can you stop off at a pharmacy?” You asked Gabby as guys made your way back from the call.
   Gabby looked over at you briefly, “Sure.”
   Just as you had asked, Gabby pulled the ambo in front of a pharmacy and killed the engine. As you got out, you saw that Gabby was ready to hop out as well.
“You don’t have to come,” You said quickly.
   Gabby nodded but seemed suspicious as she sat back down and you slammed the door before heading into the store.
   And that was how you found yourself standing in the aisle of the pharmacy, staring at the boxes of pregnancy tests in front of you.
   You decided to grab a few and then proceeded to make your way up to the cashier, trying to avoid any eye contact as you paid. Then you shoved the tests into the paper bag and quickly left.
“That was fast,” Gabby commented and you nodded before setting the bag between the two of you.
   Just as you expected, Gabby leaned over and peered into the bag, eager to see what you had bought.
“Wait...” She looked up at you and you forced yourself to meet her eyes, “Are you-”
“I wouldn’t be buying a pregnancy test if I knew now would I?” You snapped, interrupting her before she could finish.
   Gabby stared at you for a moment and you took a deep breath.
“Sorry,” You apologized and took another deep breath, trying to stay calm.
   Gabby smiled, “It’s fine. Is that why you were in the bathroom this morning?”
   You nodded and then ran your fingers through your hair.
“God, what am I going to do Gabby?” You stressed, closing your eyes as you heard Gabby start the engine.
“Hey hey hey, You don’t even know if you’re pregnant, it could be a stomach bug or something,” Gabby said, “Plus, even if you are, you know Matt loves kids.”
   You knew Matt loved kids. You knew he would be thrilled to be a father. However, you were unsure how ready you were for parenthood.
“Look, just take the test when we get back to the firehouse and go from there,” Gabby said and you nodded.
“Yeah, that’s a good idea.”
   You sighed and let your body relax against the seat.
This was going to get interesting.
~~~
   The timer went off and you reluctantly opened your eyes and walked over to the counter where the tests were placed.
“What do they say?” Gabby asked from the other corner.
   You swallow hard and slumped against the wall.
“They’re positive,” You whimpered and rubbed your eyes, “Oh my god, Gabby, what am I going to do?”
“You could just straight out tell him,” Gabby replied, “Or maybe give him a cute onsie or something, though I feel like everyone does the onsie thing...”
   You chuckled, despite how stressed you were feeling. Of course Gabby was excited over how you should break the news to Matt.
“I know, I’ll have something prepared for you by the end of the day and then you can just give it to Matt,” Gabby patted you on the knee, “One less thing for you to worry about.”
   You nodded and smiled at your friend, “Thanks Gabby.”
“No problem,” Gabby grinned, “You know I’m sucking up to you so that I can be the one of the godparents right?”
   You laughed and Gabby pulled you onto your feet, just in time for another call to come in.
~~~
“Alright,” Gabby pulled you by her bunk just before shift was going to end, “I got it right here.”
   She grabbed a gift bag from underneath her bunk and handed it to you.
“Thanks,” You said and quickly tucked it into your duffel bag before anyone could see.
   Gabby smiled, “You know, you’re going to be a great mom.”
“I don’t know about that,” You replied, still skeptical about yourself.
“Well, I do,” Gabby said and wrapped an arm around your shoulder as you two started walking out, “I saw how good you were with that little girl from the call earlier. You’re a natural.”
“Yeah?”
   Gabby nodded, “A thousand percent.”
   You looked over and her and smiled softly, “Thanks Gabby, that means a lot to me.”
“Now,” She stopped since you two were now about to leave the firehouse, “Give the bag to Matt tonight and I’ll see you tomorrow.”
   You nodded, “Will do.”
~~~
“Hey, is everything okay?” Matt asked as soon as you guys entered your shared apartment.
   You raised an eyebrow, “Yeah...why?”
“Gabby told me before shift ended to check on you,” Matt replied and a grin formed on your face.
   Of course she would.
“So,” Matt took a seat on the couch and patted the space next to him, beckoning you to sit down as well, “You sure everything’s okay?”
   You decided that this seemed like a relatively good time to tell him so before you sat down, you grabbed the bag Gabby had given you from your duffel bag.
“This is for you,” You explained as you handed Matt the bag.
   You took a seat next to him and nervously twiddled your thumbs, occasionally picking at the skin.
   Matt gave you a curious look but reached into the bag before pulling out a onsie with a firetruck on it and the words “My Daddy Still Plays with Trucks”.
   You shyly looked up at Matt who’s face told you he was shocked.
   Matt turned his gaze away from the onsie and on to you.
“Are you joking?” He asked, his eyes bright.
   You bit your lip, “I haven’t seen a doctor yet but I took two tests this morning, both were positive, and I’m having some of the symptoms so...”
   Before you knew it, you were Matt’s arms as he twirled you around the living room.
“I’m gonna be a dad!” He sounded like a kid on Christmas Day, making you burst into giggles.
“Yeah,” You responded and Matt set you down before kissing you.
   When he parted, his eyes were dancing and you could practically feel the happiness radiating off of him.
“I’m gonna be a dad...”

Sakyo Furuichi SSR ( Have a Pleasant Journey )
Tumblr media
Read full translation under the cut!
Story Title: "Nostalgic Children's Park"
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ PART 1˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆
Kumon: We're home-- Taichi: We're home! Izumi: Welcome back. Thank you for shopping, both of you. Taichi: Oh, by the way, Director-sensei! We found this on our way back from shopping! Muku: Is it.....an amusement park? Taichi: Yup! It's a simple mobile amusement park for children! They're stationed right in front of Veludo Station! Kumon: Everything is so small and soooo cute! Izumi: Heh, I didn't know about that. Muku: An amusement park in the city...It's almost like a movie set. Homare: Hmm, It is indeed a scene that truly invites poetry. Maybe I should stop by and go for a little walk. Kumon: It seems like they'll be doing it for a while. We were carrying groceries today, but I really wanna see it again~ Sakuya: Wow...! There are so many spots to play at. It's going to be fun for children! Taichi: That mini-train is super cute, isn't it? Kumon: Yup! Yup! The children who were riding the train were also cute! It's like we have attained world peace Sakyo: Mini train? Izumi: Sakyo-san? Kumon: Sakyo-san, are you interested in it too? Taichi: They have it!  There's a small rail within the small fence... Ahhh I should've taken a picture! Muku: Perhaps... Sakyo-san wants to ride it? Kumon: Ehh, is that so!? Taichi: It sounds like a fairytale coming from Sakyo-nii. Sakyo: Shut up. No way I'd want to ride it. ....... Izumi: ( Sakyo-san, I wonder what he's thinking about.....) ---
Izumi: ( I have to go shopping soon...) ( I need someone to help me but it seems like everyone else is already outside....) Ah, Sakyo-san! Thank goodness you're here. Are you free right now? Sakyo: What is it? Izumi: If you're free, can you help me with shopping? I have the worst timing. There's no else around now. Sakyo: Yeah, I don't mind. Are you buying a lot? Izumi: No! I'm planning to buy in small quantities but I'd like to get some help. Sakyo: I see. Then... it's a little far off but there is a place I want to stop by on our way back. Izumi: ....?
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ PART 2˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆
Izumi: So the place you wanted to stop by is.....here? Sakyo: .....Yeah. Izumi: Umm.....Can I ask why you want to come here? Don't tell me, you really want to ride that small train..? Sakyo: That's not it. You're saying that too? Izumi: Ri-right... Sakyo: I used to work here a long time ago. Izumi: Eh...? Sakyo: It was not long after I joined Ginsenkai. ....... I didn’t even have the right to refuse. I had no choice but to hear out what kind of job it was.  I was asked to be a mini train driver. At that time, I was wondering why I had to do this kind of work. There could have been other guys who can do it. They could have hired another part-timer for it. In the first place, If someone like me is sitting in the driver's seat, the children won't be able to enjoy it either. Then the guy who was in charge of the mini train told me, "It's the kind of job that even a tough-looking guy like you can do," he said. "I'll make the announcement myself so you can do it without having to smile." He laughed. I was dissatisfied that time, wondering if it was the only reason they entrusted the job to me.... "That's not all," the man said. "I think you are unexpectedly suitable for this job."
To tell the truth, I was wondering what kind of qualities he saw in me. At the same time, for me who just entered, to be entrusted to do such a job, a small sense of responsibility sprouted within me.
After that, that person and I continued to ride the mini train with the children until the end of the holding period---.
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ PART 3˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆
Izumi: I didn't know Sakyo-san had that kind of story too... Sakyo: That time, it was a part-time job so I only forced myself to do it. But when I gave it a try and saw the children laughing happily, I thought, a person like me could make other people smile too.
Choice 1: "It's the same as Sakyo-san now" Izumi: It's the same as Sakyo-san now. I think Sakyo-san's acting makes people smile. Moreover, everyone in Mankai Company loves Sakyo-san. Sakyo: I wonder. Izumi: Yes. There's no doubt about it.   It's coming from me, the general director. Sakyo: ....Hmp. Izumi: (Sakyo-san, are you being shy? )
Choice 2: " You might be a good fit to play with children" Izumi: You might be a good fit to play with children.... Sakyo: With this kind of face? Play with children? Don't be silly. Izumi: But Sakyo-san is surprisingly caring and somehow, you're gentle.... Sakyo: Is that some kind of joke? Izumi: No way. I'm serious. Sakyo: ...Whatever. Stop it. The story I told you just now, don't let the other guys know about it. It will be troublesome if those guys found out. Izumi: Fufu, I got it.
Sakyo: I haven't been organizing this children's park as much now but when I heard Nanao's story, I wondered if they reopened it without my knowledge. But coming here, it seems like it's not being sponsored by Ginsenkai anymore. Izumi: That's probably why. Sakyo: Still....The sight of children innocently laughing and  running around is no different from what it used to be. Izumi: ( ....This sight must've been memorable for Sakyo-san.)
Saejima: Oh? You over there...Are you perhaps, Furuichi? Sakyo: ...! Saejima....!? Saejima: I knew it was you! Long time no see! Izumi: Is he an acquaintance? Sakyo: Yeah.... He was in charge of the mini train when I was working as a part-timer here. Izumi: ( This person....) Sakyo: But what are you doing here....? Saejima: Nothing big has happened since then. I'm still in charge of the mini train. The management changed but nothing much changed. Sakyo: ....I see. Saejima: That's right. Would you like to drive it? Sakyo: I refuse. That's way too sudden. Saejima: Why not? You'll have lots of fun riding it! Sakyo: If the children see that I will be the one driving, they'll all run away. There's no way a yakuza like me can become a driver. Saejima: Is that so? You've pretty much driven it around the past though. I don't think you have changed that much since then. Sakyo: ..... Izumi: Isn't it nice? An opportunity like this doesn't come often. I'll watch over the groceries so please, come on board! Sakyo: ....You. Izumi: I'd like to see Sakyo-san drive a mini-train too. Saejima: See? Come on, Furuichi! The kids are waiting! Sakyo: .....Sigh.
Taichi: Ah, we finally made it~. Kumon: There are more people here today than there were yesterday! Taichi:  Ku-chan, thanks for coming with me! Kumon: Don't mind! I wanted to come here too! Taichi: I'll definitely take pictures today! Kumon: Yup, yup! Let's show it to everyone! Taichi: Let's check out the mini train first! Kumon: If I remember correctly, it's over there! Let's go!
Taichi: Found it! It's the mini train! I'm gonna send a picture to Sakyo-nii immediately.... Kumon:.....Huh? Isn't that Sakyo-san? Taichi: Eh? Why is Sakyo-nii driving the mini train? -Little Crosby-|D. Cozens| [Part 6]
Here is part 6! I can't believe it’s already part 6! But Dylan and Ava’s story continues and there's a bit of a surprise! I know @prettyboycozens and I were so excited about this part and what happens! So enjoy and please let us know what you think!
2 weeks after the draft, Dylan and I finished packing a few things from his parents’ house and headed down to Buffalo. Until I started college in the fall, we would be living together. It had taken Dad a while to get used to the idea, but he would get me back for the school year which he liked. But being away from Dylan again would be hard. Things seemed to be serious between us especially with the whole moving in together thing. Kirby and Carter helped move us into the apartment and then headed to Chicago for Kirby to report for camp. But before that, we had a week with just the 4 of us at the apartment, hanging out. Carter and I spent the days getting the apartment set up and organized while the boys attempted to build furniture. Since Dylan and I hadn’t made it to the grocery store yet, we ordered food a lot, figuring out what places around the apartment are good and we should remember to order from. Since I was pregnant, I got to decide what sounded good because certain foods made me sick. Most nights, we ordered pizza from a little place about 20 minutes from the apartment, just because I had no problem with it because it didn’t make me sick.
“I’m hungry.” I say, glancing up at Carter as she walks back into the living room.
“We’re literally getting pizza in like 20 minutes. What are you hungry for?” Carter asks, sitting down on the couch next to me.
“I don’t know. I kinda want pickles?” I say, looking over at her. Her eyebrow immediately goes up.
“You? Want pickles? You hate pickles.” She says, crossing her arms.
“Pickles sound really good right now. Can you call the boys and have them bring pickles back with the pizza?” I ask, leaning my head against the back of the couch.
“I’ll just go get you some pickles, you weirdo.” Carter says, grabbing my car keys off the table and heading towards the front door. About 10 minutes after she leaves, Dylan and Kirby get home with the pizza.
“Where’d Carter go?” Kirby asks, setting the pizza on the kitchen table and then coming to flop on the couch next to me.
“Store. She should be back soon.” I answer as Dylan walks back into the room and over to the couch. He nudges Kirby to move over and pulls me into his lap.
“Avs, you’re pretty.” Dylan says, gently kissing the side of my neck. Kirby is absorbed in his phone, not paying any attention to the two of us. Ever since that night, after the draft, Dylan and my relationship has moved to a whole new level. He’s much more physical, which I love. He also makes me feel so loved. Not that he didn’t before but he’s more physical about his love.
“Ava Grace! I got the pickles!” Carter calls, slamming the front door of Dylan’s apartment. She hands me the jar of pickles and I smile happily. Kirby looks up at her as she slides her arms around his neck and accepts a kiss from her.
“You hate pickles. Why did she go get you pickles?” Dylan asks, looking at me, amused.
“I wanted pickles. They sound good.” And so, as everyone else starts eating the pizza the boys brought home, I eat happily out of my pickle jar. Dylan keeps looking at me, sitting down on the floor, munching away on my pickles, and shaking his head with a smile on his face.
“Hey, what was in the bag you brought home?” I ask as I finish off the jar of pickles and look over at Carter.
“I bought more lip gloss, that’s all.” She says, pulling out a tube and waving it at me.
“It tastes really good.” Kirby says, laughing. I roll my eyes and lean back against Dylan’s leg. His fingers twist through my hair gently and I relax even more.
“Wait did you eat all of those pickles?” Carter asks, sitting up all of the sudden.
“Yeah...Why? Actually, I think I want more.” Carter’s face screws up and she stands up, Kirby’s hands slipping off her waist.
“Let’s go get more pickles then.” She says, taking my car keys off the table again and walking towards the door. Dylan and Kirby both look confused and Carter looks concerned. As soon as the door closes behind us, she turns on me.
“Did you and Dylan use a condom that night after the draft?” I reel back, confused.
“I-What? I don’t know?” I say, starting to panic and trying to think back through that night. We were both so into each other and very very excited from the draft and just got a little carried away.
“Did he stop before anything happened?” As I realize what she’s hinting at, I shake my head.
“N-No...I guess we didn’t. Shit and I didn’t get my period this month.” I say, the realization hitting. I run my hand through my hair, my eyes wide and on Carter.
“We’re going to get a pregnancy test. Get in the car.” She says, turning back around to go inside and grab her purse. She tells the boys we’re going to get ice cream and runs back out the front door. She follows me out to her car and we get in on our opposite sides.
“Ava, don’t freak out just yet. You haven’t taken the test yet, it could just be a fluke. And you know that no matter what, you’re still my best friend and I’m gonna be here, no matter what that test says.” She says, her hands on either side of my face, forcing me to look at her. I nod, pushing all the emotions and feelings rushing through me down.
The drive to the store is silent, both Carter and I left to our own thoughts. She leaves me in the car, attempting to avoid the impending breakdown she can probably see on my face, and comes back with 3 different pregnancy tests.
“When we get home, we’ll send the boys down to the basement and lock ourselves in the bathroom upstairs and you can take the tests. Is that okay?” I nod, still completely lost in my thoughts. Another silent car ride back to the house, and Carter sends the boys down to the basement, shutting the door and locking it from the outside. She hands me the bag with the tests in it and she follows me into the bathroom. I do everything I need to do for the tests and then Carter sets the timer.
“Now...we wait.” I say, watching the timer count down. I couldn’t even look at the tests, leaving Carter to see the results.
“Ava...They’re positive. All 3 are positive.” Carter says, her voice low and soft. Her hand slips into mine and she forces me to look up at her.
“You’re pregnant.” As the words come out of Carter’s mouth, all I can think about is having to tell Dylan and Dad that we fucked up and now I’m pregnant.
“Ava, you need to breathe. We have to talk about this. You’re going to have to tell Dylan and your dad soon. Before they start to notice a bump.” She kneels down in front of me, looking into my eyes.
“It’s gonna be okay. Dylan and your dad love you.” I start to cry, leaning into Carter’s chest as she holds me.
Dylan’s P.O.V. As I walk into the bathroom outside of the bedroom Ava and I share the next morning, I see something sitting on the counter. I ignore it, do what I came in there to do and then glance at it again. Ava keeps our bathroom ridiculously clean, so the fact that there’s something out on the counter is weird. So I make the decision to grab it and figure out what it is. As I do, I almost instantly regret it. It’s a positive pregnancy test, which causes my stomach to turn. Ava and I have been the only two  in the house for the past couple days since Kirby and Carter just got here yesterday, meaning that the test could only be from her.
“Hey man, let’s get going! The girls are meeting us at the store.” Kirby yells, coming down the hallway. Ava and Carter got up early, went out to breakfast and then went shopping for bedding and things for the apartment. He pushes the door open and stands in the doorway.
“What are you doing? You’ve been in here for like 20 minutes.” He says, crossing his arms and leaning against the doorframe.
“Uh um, this is a pregnancy test. A positive pregnancy test.” I say, turning and handing it to Kirby. He glances down at it and then back up at me.
“Yeah...What’s the issue?” He asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Ava and I have been the only ones in the house for the past week. This test has to be from her.” Kirby’s eyes widen a little but he keeps his cool.
“So? It could be a false positive. Dyl, don’t think too much into it. But if you are worried, maybe talk to Ava about it?” He says, following me out of the bathroom and back to my room.
“But what if it’s not a false positive? What if it’s a real positive? What if she’s pregnant and we’re going to be parents? I can’t be a dad yet.” Kirby sits down on the bed as I pace around the room.
“Cozzy, listen to me. You’re gonna be fine. If it is positive and she is pregnant, then you’re gonna be a dad. And you know what? You’ll be just fine as a dad. If anything, you’re the best one out of all of us to become a dad so young. Dylan, this is between you and Ava. Talk to Ava if you’re really worried about it.” Kirby may be an idiot most of the time but he’s a really good friend. Probably my best friend.
“Cozens, if you are gonna be a dad and Ava does have a baby, you’ll get the future you’ve been talking about having with her for the past two years. It’ll be a little earlier than you planned but you’re getting everything you’ve wanted. You’ve talked about having a future with her since you started talking to her, right after the game. Everything you wanted, could be happening.” And as I sit there, listening to Kirby talk me down off the ledge I had walked myself up, I realize he’s right.
“She’s everything I’ve wanted. She’s everything I want. I do want a future with her and if that future includes having a baby at 19, then I guess that’s my future with Ava. And I’m okay with it.” Kirby squeezes my shoulder, nodding.
“You’re not going to talk to Ava about this, are you?” I shake my head.
“If she is, it’s up to her to tell me.” Kirby nods and hands me my jacket.
“Let’s go get our girls.”
Ava’s P.O.V.
Carter and I got up early, went to the doctor and confirmed what we already knew and that I would be having a baby boy, which was the most exciting part of our visit to the doctor, and then had to come up with a plan for how to tell Dad and Dylan.
“You could just flat out tell them? I think that would be the easiest option.” She says as we wander around the baby section of the clothing store we found.
“But that’s not fun. I need to make it fun so I have something to distract myself from the fact that I have to tell my boyfriend who I love beyond belief and never want to lose, and my dad who had me way too young, that I’m pregnant.” She nods, looking at the tiny clothes surrounding us.
“Okay, I think I saw something like this on Pinterest the other day but, what about getting two of their jerseys and putting Daddy on the back of Dylan’s and then grandpa on the back of your dad’s?” As I think through the idea she just proposed, I start to like it more and more.
“That’s a good idea! I could probably talk to the people who do the Sabres jerseys. It might take a couple days but we’re not going back down to Pittsburgh till the weekend so as long as we have them before then, I can just tell them this weekend.” Carter nods and we continue to wander around the store as I type up an email to the girl who does all the jerseys for the Sabres. A few minutes later, the boys show up and Carter and I make a point of getting out of the baby section before they meet up with us. As we’re eating lunch, an email buzzes my phone and I turn to attempt to hide the screen from Dylan who’s sitting next to me, his hand resting on my thigh. The girl says she’ll do the jerseys for free as long as I provide them. So as soon as we get back, I order the jerseys which get there the next day and take them over to the arena while Dylan is with Kirby, looking at something for the apartment. On Wednesday, before Dylan and I head back down to Pittsburgh for the weekend, I convince Dylan to stop by the arena for a few minutes. As I wander the halls of the arena, I think about the fact that under Dylan’s sweatshirt that hangs loosely on me, a growing baby bump is starting to show and soon, I’ll be bringing a baby with me to all of Dylan’s games.
The jerseys turned out fantastic and I’m so excited to give them to Dad and Dylan. And I can barely contain my excitement the whole 3 hour drive to Pittsburgh. Dad isn’t there when Dylan and I get to the house but I still have a key and let us in. Dylan carries our bags up to my childhood bedroom and I pick up a few things around the house, getting things together before Dad comes home from practice.
“Hey Sweetheart! Sorry I wasn’t home when you guys got here. Practice ran a little late today.” Dad says, coming in and kissing my forehead. Dylan comes downstairs and sits down on the couch next to me.
“Don’t worry about it. I still have my key.” Dad pats my shoulder and then moves to hug Dylan who stands up and hugs him.
“Can we do dinner tonight? Or did you have plans?” I ask, looking up at Dad as he walks back out to the kitchen.
“We can do dinner. Do you want to order something or do you want to cook?” I glance at Dylan and he shrugs.
“I’ll just make something. Why don’t you and Dylan go to the store for me and I’ll get started cooking.” Dad nods and calls “Just make us a list.” I write up a list and hand it to Dylan who follows Dad out to the car. Them being out of the house for a little while, gives me time to get the jerseys ready and get everything prepped.
As I fold the two jerseys a few hours later, my hands shake a little. I was cooking dinner for Dylan, Dad and I, planning on telling him and Dylan about the baby after dinner. Dylan and Kirby happened to be home, visiting Carter’s parents so they were over too.
“Hey, I have something for both of you.” I say, as I head back out to the dining room after we’ve eaten and set one box in front of Dylan and the other in front of Dad. Carter and Kirby have disappeared outside, like I had asked. I wanted to tell Dad and Dylan first before Carter and Kirby found out.
“Ava, what is this?” Dad asks, as I turn around from watching Kirby and Carter through the sliding door. Dad’s holding up the Penguins number 87 jersey with grandpa stitched where Crosby should be. Dylan’s eyes widen and he tears the box in front of him open.
“D-Daddy? What’s this?” He asks, looking at the jersey and holding up the sonogram photos.
“Um...I’m pregnant? With a boy?” I say, running my hand through my hair and taking the pictures from Dylan. He stands up, the jersey still clutched in his hand.
“You’re serious?” He asks, his hands on either side of my face, forcing my eyes to meet his. Dad is silent, which is the scariest part of all of this.
“Yeah...I’m 21 weeks along.” Dad’s face is now buried in the jersey, his face hidden from me.
“Oh my god. Baby!” Dylan says, hugging me, then dropping onto his knees to talk to my slightly protruding belly.
“Ava, is this real? Dad’s voice says, suddenly breaking through the silence. He’s standing, the jersey forgotten on the table. But as my eyes meet his, I don’t see the anger and frustration I was expecting to see. Instead, excitement and happiness fill his eyes.
“I’m gonna be a grandpa!” He says as I nod. He grins and pulls me into a hug. Dylan stands back, letting Dad and I have our moment.
“I guess this means you’re officially a part of the family?” Dad says, keeping his arm around my shoulder and looking over at Dylan.
“I mean, he’d better be. He is the father of your first grandchild.” I say, tugging Dylan to me and wrapping an arm around his waist.
“Well in that case, welcome to the family, Son.” Dad says, shaking Dylan’s hand. I smile and then the 3 of us sit back down. Dylan’s hand rests on my thigh and I lean against his shoulder. Carter and Kirby come back in and sit down with us, a knowing grin on Carter’s face.
“What’s with the jerseys?” Kirby asks, pointing at the Sabres jersey sitting on the table.
“Oh yeah, Kirby, you’re gonna be an uncle. Ava’s pregnant with a baby boy.” Kirby’s mouth drops open and we all laugh.
“You got her pregnant Cozzy? Seriously?” Kirby asks, laughing and leaning back in his chair.
“I did and you don’t need to give me anymore shit about it because believe me, I’ve heard it all.” Dylan says, pointing at him. The rest of the night, we all spend time planning for the baby and talking about names, nursery themes and everything else baby-related.
Later that night, Kirby wanders into the living room while Dylan is in the shower.
“Hey Kid, how you feeling?” Kirby asks, flopping onto the couch next to me. I glance down at my stomach where my bump is starting to show more and more every day. “Baby Cozens was up all night last night kicking so I’m pretty tired but other than that, pretty good.” He nods, glancing at my stomach, a smirk growing on his face.
“I still can’t believe Cozzy got you pregnant. I’m really excited for you both but it’s a lot to take in.” I nod, my hand resting on my stomach.
“It’s going to be a big adjustment. I mean, you’re gonna be Uncle Kirby now.” He laughs and nods.
“Ava, you know I care about you a lot. I mean, you’re pretty much my honorary sister and I love you. So if you need anything, ever, I’ll be here. I wanna help out as much as I can. Filling my uncle's duty.” He says, laughing and slinging an arm around my shoulders.
“I really appreciate it, Kirby. It means a lot, especially coming from you. I’m trusting you and Carter with this baby boy if anything ever happens to Dylan and I. I don’t think I’m supposed to tell anyone and I haven’t talked to Dylan about this yet but you and Carter are the godparents and I wouldn’t want anyone else to be responsible for my baby. Y’all are gonna spoil my son, aren’t you?” He nods, a grin on his face again.
“Between all of us hockey players, that child is going to be unstoppable on the ice.” I laugh and nod.
“Well anyways, I just wanted you to know that I’m here and that I want to help take care of you in any way you need me to.” I nod, smiling at him. And with a nod and smirk, he leaves me alone again.
Telling Dad and Dylan lifted such a weight off my shoulders. Both of them are thrilled, especially Dylan. He’s fully transitioned to Dad mode, planning the nursery and getting it ready, thinking about names, talking to the guys he plays with who already have kids to get tips. The 9 months before the baby is born fly by. And before Dylan and I know it, it’s month 9 and I feel like a whale. Dad has kept himself busy but he’s excited to become a grandpa. But I think my favorite telling people about the baby moment was when I sat my uncles down, around month 6.
I set the box of donuts Dylan and I had picked up on our way to Geno’s, on the counter in the kitchen. Dylan takes my hand and we walk out to the living room.
“Dylan! Glad you could come too!” Kris says, getting up off the couch to go and shake his hand. They’ve all been around Dylan a few times now and they all seem to get along really well. I guess that kinda comes with the whole hockey player thing.
“Oh you brought donuts?” Marc says, walking out of the kitchen with one in his hand.
“You weren’t supposed to eat them yet! There’s a whole thing that goes with it!” I say, pointing at him from where I’ve settled myself on the couch next to Dylan and Kris. He shrugs and sits down on the other couch.
“Fine, go get donuts.” I say, leaning my head on Dylan’s shoulder. Dad follows all 3 uncles into the kitchen to get donuts, Marc making sure to get another one.
“How much are we betting that they won’t even look at what’s written on the box?” I ask, looking up at Dylan.
“Your dad knows about it, he’ll make sure they look at it.” He answers as they all make their way back into the living room. I look up at Dad who just shakes his head and laughs.
“Hey did you see where I got the donuts from?” I ask, looking over at the 3 uncles.
“No, why does it matter? The donuts are good.” Kris says, eating the donut in his hand.
“Go look at the box please. All 3 of you.” I say, crossing my arms and raising an eyebrow. Marc leads Kris and Geno into the kitchen again and they’re in there for a few minutes.
“I swear, you put food in front of them and they don’t pay attention to anything else.” I say, rolling my eyes and waiting for them to come back into the living room.
“You pregnant? With a baby?” Geno asked, walking back into the living room with the other 2 behind him. Kris sits back down on the couch, his arms crossed and eyebrows raised. Marc, who just happened to be in town for some reason, looks concerned as he sits across from me.
“She’s 6 months pregnant.” Dad says, looking down at me, sitting on the couch next to me and smiling.
“This obviously is a little different from the plan Dad and I have had for the past couple years but it’s going to be a good thing. It’s already a good thing. Dylan and I are really excited.”  The uncles still look a little confused and slightly concerned but they all seem happy. Knowing that I have the support of the 4 guys who raised me throughout my whole childhood, plus Dylan of course, is making this whole pregnancy so much easier. But of course, everything has its ups and downs and the up I’m feeling slowly turns into a down very very quickly.
“This is all because you couldn’t keep your dick in your pants and I hate you for it. I’m misreable now because of you and your stupid dick.” I say, glaring over at Dylan. He shakes his head and runs his hand through my hair. It’s 3 in the morning, the baby has been up kicking and moving around inside me all night and I have not slept at all. Dylan, on the other hand, has slept like baby boy Cozens is supposed to be.
“Baby, it’s gonna be okay. As soon as he’s born, you can tell him about how miserable he made you while you were pregnant. You can sleep all day tomorrow, we don’t have anywhere to be. Oh wait, shit. Isn’t tomorrow the dinner thing for you dad?” I groan and slouch lower into the blankets.
“Why did you remind me?” I groan as he tugs me into his chest and presses a kiss to the side of my neck. I close my eyes and try to settle into the peace being cuddled into Dylan’s chest gives me and somehow, it works. I wake up feeling a little better but still in an awful mood. Dylan attempts to cheer me up by getting me ice cream after lunch but it’s still a long day. I manage to squeeze my too pregnant body into the dress Carter and I bought a few months earlier. Dad shows up to pick the two of us up and I prepare to suffer through a ridiculously long dinner and talking to people I don’t know and don’t want to talk to. After what seems like forever, it’s time for Dad to make his speech for whatever honor he’s receiving that night and I prepare for the absolute bore that it will be. I love hearing Dad talk and usually I enjoy listening to him give speeches but tonight, I’m too miserable to enjoy it. All of the sudden, I feel stabbing pains. I shift a little, trying to make it go away and Dylan glances at me out of the corner of his eye. He raises an eyebrow, checking to make sure I’m okay and I brush him off with a nod. But then the contractions, or at least that’s what I assume they are, get worse and closer together.
“Baby’s coming.” I say, my nails definitely digging into Dylan’s bicep.
“Now? Like right now?” He asks, his eyes growing wide in panic. He glances down at my dress, seeing the darkened spot on my dress. He stands up, getting the attention of everyone in the crowded room. Dad, who had been on stage giving a speech about something I hadn’t been listening to, looks over at our table.
“Okay, we gotta go!” He says, tugging me to my feet as I groan. My guess is that the next 24 hours are going to be chaos-filled.

A Year Later - ep. 07 - JJ Maybank
A/N: I wanted to do an epilogue of sorts for The S’week and @d-reamingoutloud suggested looking into their lives a year after the story so that’s what I decided to do. Basically this is kind of where the reader’s relationship with them all is at.
The S’week Masterlist | Outer Banks Masterlist
✰ ✰ ✰ ✰
John B. Routledge -
John B’s Hand slipped out of yours, both of you forming a fist to side bump in a variation of the secret pogue handshake that you’d somehow come to adopt as your own in the last year. You were standing on the edge of the jetty, cooler in your other hand.
“You ready to go?” John B asked, taking the cooler from you and setting it down below the seat before he held his hand out for you to climb aboard. It was early enough in the morning that it was still dark outside but the light on the boat cast a glow across the marsh, a rather calming effect on you as you prepared to spend the morning fishing with John B. An odd sort of tradition that had come about last year and had just stuck. A time and place that neither of you had to worry about other obligations or other people’s opinions of your friendship.
“Yeah. New boat?” You asked, taking a look at the boat as you stepped on. John B stepped back to give you some room, nodding his head.
“Got it last month, finally saved enough between rent and bills.” He replied, “being an adult sucks.”
“I hardly think 19 qualifies as being an adult.” You laughed, taking a seat as he pulled away from the jetty. It was still cold out for now, one of JJ’s hoodies keeping you warm as the light rush of air chilled your bare legs.
“It does when I’ve got bills to fucking pay.” John B replied.
“Touché.” You glanced back at him, “I thought you were doing the Winnebago thing with Kie? Surfing all the coasts or something?”
Kiara was leaving at the end of the week to spend the summer in a Winnebago with a few friends from college. The last you had heard about the trip John B was tagging along too, eager, apparently, to get out of the obx. But here he was, spending his money on a new boat and seemingly unprepared to leave the island.
“Nah, I thought about it but...I don’t know. She’s talking about it being a fresh start and how I’m in a slump but I know if I go with her-”
You nodded, “not exactly a fresh start if you’re just tagging along with Kie wherever she goes.”
You loved Kiara but you knew that she had a constant want to fix her friends problems, always the mom of the group in a way it killed her that things had never gone back to normal after the s’week debacle. The Week that Must Not Be Named, according to JJ.
“Yeah, and listening to her try and fix things between everyone. I love her to death but the ‘we should put aside our differences’ spiel has yet to work on any of us.” John B replied, “except maybe you and Sarah.”
“Me and Sarah are in it for life, she’s my like platonic soulmate best friend. I’d have to cut a part of myself out to not be friends with her anymore.” You admitted. Sarah could stab you in the back, and figuratively she had, and you would still be rooting for her in the end. You loved JJ and you cared about John B but Sarah was your ride or die.
“That’s really touching.”
“Oh shut up,” You laughed, tossing a flip-flop at him. “I love you too John B.”
“Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I was gonna say, I’ll take you up on your offer...if it still stands?”
You’d came home almost every weekend because of your schedule but it was during spring break, on a day when JJ had work and you had gone over to the Chateau to hang out with John B, that you had mentioned your family’s vacation home in Hawaii. You usually went around Christmas and had that year, taking JJ with you for his first plane ride ever (which had been hilarious in itself). John B had mentioned wanting to get away from the obx and you suggested your family’s vacation home, free to him if he wanted to move out there for a little while.
“Yeah of course, whatever you need.”
“A serious change of scenery.” John B replied. The Outer Banks had always been his home but it was feeling more and more like a prison the longer he stayed there. Especially when he felt like he was running into JJ everywhere he went.
“I’m guessing, if you’re aversion to Kie is that strong, you and JJ still aren’t talking?” You asked. It was an unspoken agreement between you and JJ that you never talked about his former best friend.
“I got nothing to say to him.” He shrugged, “I’ve tried, I swear...it’s just, every time I see him I think about it and I feel like I wanna drown him in the ocean.”
“I guess you won’t be coming to the boneyard on Friday then?”
“Nah. I’ve got you and Kie and I don’t really wanna see anyone else. I’ve tried hanging out with other people we just don’t vibe ya know? I miss feeling like I had that group...I’m not gonna have that feeling here anymore.”
“Hey I get that. When Rafe and I broke up I lost a lot of friends I thought I had.” You replied, “people can’t help feeling loyal to certain people.”
“Maybe.” John B shrugged; it didn’t matter. Or he was trying to accept that he couldn’t change it. “But you’re here on the boat with me and we get along fine. You don’t try and bullshit me about JJ or tell me we should all be best friends again.”
“It’s not my place. Besides, JJ and I have come to the agreement that we don’t talk about it.” You replied. It kept you both happy.
“Well it’s shit when you and Kie are in school cause then it’s just me and JJ on the cut.” John B admitted. He hadn’t complained too much about it during the school year but you knew that was just for your benefit. “What about you? I know you guys are cool but how is rooming with Sarah?”
“It’s good, feels like old times again ya know...JJ doesn’t come around, but...it what it is.” You shrugged.
✰ ✰
Sarah Cameron -
“I’m going to fail all my classes.” Sarah groaned, resting her chin on her forearms. She’d pushed her books away from her, forcing you to pick up your coffee when her textbooks threatened to knock it over.
Finals were in a week and both of you had been studying like crazy, meeting up in the dorm or in the library for cram sessions between classes. Sarah was already planning on going to Nassau the first week of summer vacation with Topper and some college friends. Even if nobody actually knew what happened last summer it still felt different being in the Outer Banks now.
“You are not, you’re literally one of the smartest people I know.” You replied, attempting to be encouraging as you texted Kiara about Pope’s birthday party coming up. Your books mirrored Sarah’s but you were taking a supposed break from studying for the five minutes your timer allotted.
“But not the smartest?” She asked, lifting her head and narrowing her eyes at you. She grabbed her own cup of coffee off the table and took a sip as she looked over the books again. Nothing had changed.
“I mean, I know Topper so...”
“Oh my god, shut up, I just fucking spit out my coffee.” Sarah laughed, covering her mouth with her hand and reached for a napkin. “For real though, why couldn’t my dad have pulled a Lori Laughlin and like, paid off my college?”
You slipped your phone back on the table face down, clicking the side when it rang and pulling one of your books closer to distract you from it. “Because then he would’ve gotten caught and you would’ve been kicked out and probably blacklisted and everyone would be like ‘that girl is so dumb her dad paid off the college to pass her.’ And you’d have to move in with me and work retail.”
“Stop it. What a fucking nightmare.”
“The living with me or the working retail?” You asked, laughing at the annoyed face she made.
“I’m gonna hire a new best friend who’s just like ‘yeah Sarah you’re so smart’, ‘your dad should pay for you to ace tests, you don’t need college’ and whatever other shit I pay them for.” She replied.
“You could pay me, I’ll be your yes man.” You offered, silencing your phone when it rang again.
“Who’s calling you?” Sarah asked, her attention drawn away from studying and Lori Laughlin to the phone that rang for a third time.
“What?” You looked up, “no one.” You’d told JJ that you would call him when you were finished studying and that you were busy but that didn’t stop the incessant calling once he decided he felt like talking to you. Normally you wouldn’t care but you did your best to separate JJ from your life at school because Sarah was here and you didn’t feel like it was fair to flaunt that in front of her, even if it was accidental.
“Seriously, I can see you clicking off your phone every couple minutes.” She replied, “Is it JJ?”
“Uh-” You bit your lip as you looked over at the offending electronic. It was no use pretending like he wasn’t the person on the other end of the call. You’d gone two semesters and a spring break without incident, surely, she wouldn’t care if you took one phone call. But you still felt guilty, you weren’t sure if that would ever go away. “It’s no big deal, I can talk to him later.”
“I’m fine!” Sarah insisted, “seriously I’ve got like a real date on Friday.”
“I just wanna call him back real quick.” You replied, “I think it’s about going home for the weekend.”
“For Pope’s birthday?”
“Yeah.” You’d been staying on campus with finals so close but it you knew Pope was going to be home for the weekend for his birthday and Kiara would be there and you didn’t want to miss spending time with them. Especially since you wouldn’t see them again until hell week was over and you were moving out of your dorm.
“Kie mentioned it to me last week.” Sarah explained, “Are you guys doing anything special?”
“As far as I know it’s just the four of us.” You replied. John B hadn’t been hanging around either of his former friends. He still saw Kiara when she was home and you whenever you came home for the weekend, but that was sans JJ or Pope. If either of them was around than John B kept his distance.
“Go, go. Seriously, I’m fine.”
You pushed your chair back as your phone rang one more time, finally answering it. “Okay. I’ll be right back.”

JJ Maybank -
“I’ve been thinking,” JJ started to say, sitting on a chair in The Wreck with you on his lap. Before he could continue you raised an eyebrow at him, running your fingers through his hair to get him to look up at you.
“That’s never good.”
JJ stuck his tongue out but kept talking, undeterred by your comment, “...you should drop out.” He announced.
You laughed, knowing that JJ wasn’t serious at all. He’d been making the same suggestion to you since September. “No way in hell! Why would I do that?”
“So I don’t have to go weeks without seeing you.” He shrugged, fingers slipping beneath your shirt as he laid a kiss against your neck.
“A more tempting offer than I expected...what’ll we do on all these weeks spent actually seeing each other?” You asked, smiling. You couldn’t help but play along whenever he asked you to leave school. It was all just for fun, if anything JJ had the most supportive person you had in your life during school.
“I can think of a few things.” JJ replied, squeezing your side and brushing his nose against your collar and neck.
“Oh god.” You laughed, “stop we’re in public. There are families with children here.”
“How do you think they got the kids?” He shrugged.
“You’re a terrible person.” You replied, “come on, Kie and Pope will be here soon.”
“You’ve been home for like an hour and you’re already dying to see our friends instead of me.” JJ whined.
“An hour? Babe, I got in this morning...we spent the whole morning ‘unpacking’ in my room.” You pointed out. You’d taken the earliest ferry over that you could and met JJ on the docks. It didn’t matter that you’d just seen him two weeks ago or that you facetimed him every night, seeing him in person gave you the best feeling in the world. It was undeniable.
“Okay, I know I did not come all the way here just to watch you guys mack on each other.” Kiara announced as she came over to the table.
“Came all the way over? You fucking work here Kie.” JJ replied, rolling his eyes as you got up to give her a hug. He frowned at the loss of attention, even if he did know that going out with everyone meant not getting you all to himself.
“I had to go pick up Pope and then drive back.” Kiara said, as if that was a viable excuse.
“I’m like five minutes away...walking.” Pope pointed out, giving you a hug before grabbing a seat next to JJ.
“No, move.”
“I’m not moving!” Pope exclaimed, “dude, don’t push my chair.”
“He’s being a brat cause I’m apparently more excited to see you guys than I was to see him.” You replied, laughing as Pope smacked JJ’s hands away from his chair. You sat across from your boyfriend, sticking your tongue out at him.
“You are.”
“I am not!”
“She is.” Kiara said, grinning at you, “it’s okay I know you only date JJ so you can hang out with us.”
“Hey!”
“I know, what am I gonna do while you’re away?”
“It’s okay,” Pope said, reaching across the table and putting his hand over yours, “I’ll still be here.”
“Thank god.”
“Okay, seriously, the three of you are the worst.” Despite his words when you looked over at JJ he was smiling, eyes brighter than they’d been when you met him almost a year ago. Things weren’t perfect but they were good.

Supreme Leader Kylo Ren now has everything he could possibly dream of, except for someone to rule by his side. And he’ll do anything to get Cora back.
The final fic in my Kylo/Cora Star Wars canon series. This is most definitely a TROS fix it fic because fuck that movie and shitty writing.

Chapter 15
Cora
The Supremacy had been thrown into chaos thanks to The Resistance, which meant now was my chance to take the ship down and take out a good chunk of The First Order. After all, their beloved General wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. And I was more than willing to make that happen. Stepping out of Kylo Ren’s quarters showed me just how chaotic the situation was. Officers and troopers were running in every direction, not knowing what to do. Some had bags packed, ready to jump ship and abandon their cause. It was almost comical. Not a single one of them looked in my direction. They were all too worried about themselves.
Meaning none of them would bat an eyelid if I was seen near the armoury. Ben still had my saber, so I needed something to arm myself with. If it came down to that. Keeping my head down, I ventured through the ship until I found the armoury. The door was open, probably by the last careless person who had been inside. In their panic, they had likely forgotten to close the door and put in the passcode to lock it. Luck must be on my side. Entering the large armoury, I searched the shelves, ignoring the various blasters and ammo.
Finally, I found the perfect weapon. A small yet powerful bomb, one that was controlled by a countdown timer. Ignoring the screams from outside, I carefully picked the device up and put it in a duffel bag. The Resistance must already be aboard. Standing in the doorway, I scanned the corridor for the source of the screaming. At the far end of the corridor on the left stood a very welcome familiar sight. Varidun had his saber drawn, several stormtroopers already cut down and scattered haphazardly across the floor. Another three have their blasters pointed at him.
Varidun blocks the fire with his saber, using the force to throw one trooper back into the nearest wall hard enough that the sound of his spine breaking could be heard. The next one is taken out by his own blaster fire, deflected back at him. And the third is quickly decapitated by Varidun’s saber. Ignoring the bodies on the floor and only focusing on the happiness and hope that filled me at the sight of my teacher and true father figure, I ran to him. I was glad that he was the first familiar face I saw again. As I reached him, I threw my arms around the taller man, embracing him for the first time.
Varidun stumbles backward a few steps, having not expected the hug. There’s a pause before he puts his free arm around me to return the embrace. Smiling softly, I knew I would never get a chance like this again and savoured it whilst I could. Finally, I let go of him. “I’m assuming you're all there is to my rescue party?” I asked with a soft smirk. “Unfortunately.” “Well, now that you’ve successfully rescued me, would you maybe help me with a little something? A surprise for the General,” I asked, motioning to the duffel bag.
“Surprise, huh?” Varidun asked, struggling to keep the smirk off his face. “He told me he would rather go out in a blaze of glory than be arrested by the resistance. So I figured I’d help him with that.” “But the resistance isn’t here,” he replied with obvious sarcasm. My smirk grew at his tone. If it had been a member of the resistance, they would have condemned my plan. Good thing Varidun was the only member of my rescue party. Leading the way to Hux’s office, I knocked first to make sure he wasn’t inside. After a few moments of waiting, I then headed inside and placed the bag on his desk.
“You’re sure he’s going to show up?” Varidun asked. “I’m sure I could plant the idea in his head.” “I’m clearly not going to be able to stop you, so make sure you are quick. I’d rather not spend any longer here than we need to” After I pulled out the device, I looked it over. I had no idea how to turn the thing on, let alone set it up. “Any idea how this thing works?” I asked. “I doubt it’s the same as the Imperials, but I can try,” Varidun replied.
“I dont know, they looked up to them so much, it wouldn’t surprise me if it were similar just updated.” “Good point.” Varidun looks over the device a moment, flicking a switch before setting a sequence. “Set it for ten minutes. That should be enough time to get far enough away from the blast.” I spoke. Closing my eyes, I used the force to find Hux. Of course he’s on the bridge, barking orders at officers and troopers. It requires a little more effort and exertion to plant the idea in his mind from this distance, but it works, and he leaves his post.
“Okay, he’s coming,” I confirmed. Ushering Varidun out of the room, we took a few turns so we wouldn’t bump into Hux. “It’s a shame we won’t be able to see the look on his face,” I smirked. “It won’t exactly be there for long.” Stifling a laugh, we continued to the hanger. As we reached the open area, we were spotted by stormtroopers. They group together and start firing at us. Using the force, I deflected their fire, whilst Varidun did the same with his saber. There’s a trail of bodies littered across the floor, likely let by Varidun when he had landed his ship.
Varidun continued to block any blaster bolts I missed, providing me with cover as we made our way through the hanger. Not wanting to be weaponless, I picked up a fallen trooper’s blaster. When we reached the ship, Varidun ushered me inside first. There was only one seat. Rolling my eyes, I squeezed in behind the chair as Varidun climbed in after me. “Remind me when we get out of here to get you a bigger ship,” I remarked. “When I need one, I’ll let you know. Now hold on.” Varidun brings the ship to life and moves towards the hangers exit. Planting my feet firmly, I gripped the back of the chair for dear life as the ship lurched out of the hanger.
Now that one problem had been dealt with, I needed to find Ben and make sure he was alive. I had to help him somehow, even if it was a death wish going up against Sidious. Varidun dodged ships and swerved to avoid blasts. “Take me down to Exegol,” I shouted over the noise. “Why in all of deep space would you want to go there?” “Ben’s down there. I’m not just leaving him.” “What do you mean Ben’s down there? He went alone?!”
The familiar screech of tie fighters could be heard behind us and Varidun does a series of sharp swerves to avoid their fire. My nails dug into the leather of the chair as I tightened my grip, doing my best to keep my footing. “Rey was stupid enough to go alone, and he felt he had to help as he’s the one that caused this,” I explained. “Is this the same ‘Rey’ I heard about back at the Resistance Base?” Varidun asked. “Yes, the one who they hail as a hero even though she caused more trouble than actual heroics.” “In my experience heroes tend to be the ones causing the issues, anyway.”
Once Varidun dealt with the tie fighters, although thankfully there are plenty of resistance ships around to help, he landed on Exegol’ s surface next to Kylo Ren’s tie silencer. The dark force energy on the planet made my blood run cold and my skin turn to gooseflesh. But I had braved a sith tomb, I could brave this. I had to, for Ben. I would not let him face Sidious alone. Even if it meant I died in the process. Placing my hand on Varidun’s shoulder, I knew this could be the last time I saw him. “I understand if you don’t want to come with me, you’ve already done so much for me. Thank you for everything.” I said softly.
As Varidun helped me down from his ship, two crafts belonging to The First Order landed, having followed us. “It appears I won’t have a chance to follow you. Go, make sure Ben is alright. I will stay and make sure you aren’t followed,” Varidun declared. Nodding, I swallowed down another wave of fear as I got closer to finding out what was inside that cave. “Thank you, Varidun,” I repeated. There was a small pause as I felt the need to say something else, but I thought better of it. He probably wouldn’t appreciate my sentimental streak. Turning, I ran inside the cave.
Keeping a tight grip on the blaster, I scanned my surroundings nervously. Stepping onto the turbo lift, I headed further down into the darkness. At the bottom, I spotted three bodies in the distance, all of them dressed in black. As I got closer, I could make out it was the remaining three knights of Ren. Continuing past them, I eventually came to a large room, which was eerily quiet. Inside there were no signs of Sidious, but that still didn’t completely put me at ease. Instead, I found Rey cradling a body whilst Ben tried to comfort her. The sight of Ben, alive, filled me with a happiness so great I thought I might burst.
Ben heard my footsteps as I ran to him, dropping my blaster. He struggled to get to his feet and limped over the best he could to meet me halfway. Throwing myself into his arms, we fell backwards, as he couldn’t support both of us. I kissed him hard, overjoyed to finally have him back after all this time. Ben returned the kiss just as eagerly, his fingers threading through my hair. “Ow,” he grumbled. I tried to climb off him so that I would stop being the source of his pain, but Ben held me still. “I said ow, not to stop,” he smirked.
Dare I say it, but I had even missed that cocky smirk of his. Rolling my eyes, I gave him another kiss before getting off him and helping him up. Looking him over, he had a few cuts and bruises across his face, and he was doing his best to keep any weight off his left ankle. “What happened?” I asked. “Rey got more help than she hoped for. Sidious won’t be coming back this time…” he trailed off, glancing over at Rey, “but we lost Luke.” My heart sunk at his words and I turned to Rey. Putting aside our differences for the moment, I knelt beside her and hesitantly took Luke’s hand in mine.
It was still warm, which I hadn’t expected. His face looked peaceful, as if he were only sleeping. Tears rolled down my cheeks, as my last words to him hadn’t been the kindest. Yet my words had been enough to potentially influence his decision to finally help his daughter and nephew. Luke Skywalker had died a hero’s death, protecting those he loved.

Colson and I sat on the bathroom floor as I watched the seconds tick away on the timer on my phone. Colson put a hand on my leg, drawing my attention to him.
“Watching the clock won’t make it go any faster,” he told me as he laced his fingers through mine. “You just have to have faith.”
“I’m starting to lose faith,” I sighed as I rested my head on his shoulder. “Babe, we’ve been trying for months and every time I take a test it comes out negative.”
Colson squeezed my hand tightly. “Well, they say when you give up is when it happens, so maybe this time is the time.”
I didn’t respond. I had very little faith in me being pregnant. There was just no signs of it happening; I wasn’t having morning sickness or strange cravings, I wasn’t feeling bloated (which many of my mommy friends have cited as their main tell for being pregnant), and my period wasn’t irregular, and hadn’t been irregular at all in the past few months.
I was starting to believe that I wasn’t meant to have kids, which was starting to worry me. Colson and I had decided months ago that we wanted to start a family of our own and had been trying ever since to no avail. If I couldn't have a kid, how would Colson react? I know he already had a daughter, but he was so excited for another baby, would he be upset if I couldn’t give him one?
My phone beeped, alerting us that the five minutes were up. I grabbed for the test so quickly that I fumbled and nearly dropped it. It took me a second to look at the results before throwing the test across the room in anger, hot tears forming in my eyes.
“Negative?” Colson asked.
“What the fuck do you think?” I snapped as I got up from the floor and stormed out of the bathroom.
I tried to combat my tears before they fell but it wasn’t easy. I was so frustrated. It felt like there was no use in trying anymore if the result was always going to be the same. It was becoming more and more evident that having a child of my own was not in my future.
Colson followed me into our bedroom as I threw myself onto our bed and buried my head in the pillows. We had tried so many times, there were so many nights where we declined the offer to go out with friends because I was supposed to be at my most fertile. I cut out all the foods and drinks that were supposed to be harmful to babies. I started working out and eating healthier, just to make sure my body was strong and healthy enough to hold a child.
Why did all of our efforts have to fail like this?
I felt the bed dip next to me as Colson sat down. He gently placed a hand on my back, rubbing it soothingly, as more tears fell from my eyes.
“It’s okay,” he said. I peaked up from the pillow to see he was laying next to me now. “We can go back to the doctor and see if there’s any treatments we can do, or any other options that might work. It’ll happen eventually.”
“But what if it doesn't?” I asked as I sat up. “What if the next visit to the doctor, we’re told that none of the treatments or options are viable because I can’t have kids? What if there’s something wrong with me that means I can’t get pregnant?”
“What if it’s me?” Colson responded. “It’s possible that it could go either way, but we can’t assume that’s the problem until we know for sure.”
I shook my head, more tears welling in my eyes. I wanted to stop crying, but I was so upset and frustrated, it was hard to stop.
“It can’t be you, you’ve already had a child,” I pointed out. “And we’ve tried everything, we’ve followed the advice from doctors and specialists and other professionals on the internet, we’ve been doing everything we’ve been told, following it all to a T. If I’m not pregnant, it’s probably because I can’t get pregnant. I can’t give us a baby.”
Colson wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close. I buried my head in his shoulder and started to cry, letting out all the frustration I had been holding in recently. I had been fearing for a while that the reality of our situation was that I couldn’t get pregnant.
At first, I thought we had just been having a hard time. I had plenty of friends, and had read plenty of stories, about couples trying to get pregnant and it taking some time. Some couples had even been trying for years and were on the verge of giving up when they finally learned they were pregnant. I knew it wasn’t impossible for it to just take some time until one of my eggs was fertilized.
But, as time went on, I began to grow more and more worried. We went to see doctors that confirmed that we were perfectly healthy and capable of having babies, and were given many options and talked to many times about ways to get pregnant. At this rate, I was sure I could go to school to become a pregnancy doctor and pass with flying colours with all that I knew. But still, despite everything we were doing, there was no pregnancy. Not even a sign that I could be pregnant.
Colson rubbed my back, soothingly, as he tried to reassure me, “It’ll all be okay. You’ll be okay, baby. People try for years for children, you can’t put yourself down after a few months.”
“What if it’s genetic?” I asked. “I have aunts that can’t have kids, what if it skipped mom and went to me instead? What if I can’t have a baby?”
“We’ll deal with that when and if the doctor tells us that it’s not possible. For now, we can’t just blame ourselves.”
He was so calm. I knew I should be grateful that he was, and that he wasn’t also taking part in blaming me, but part of me felt angry. I pushed him away from me, a little more violent than I meant, and got up off the bed.
“You don’t understand!” I snapped. “If I physically cannot have a baby, it means that I can’t give you another child! Do you really want to be with me if I can’t do that? Do you want to be with someone who can’t give you another baby?”
Colson stood and put his hands on my arms, forcing me to face him. “Is that what this is about? Do you think I’m going to leave you if you can’t get pregnant?”
I felt another lump in my throat, but I swallowed it and nodded instead of talking. Colson pulled me to him again and held me tightly.
“Baby, I’m not going to let something like not having a baby be the end of this relationship. I don’t care if we can’t have a baby that’s ours, I’ll gladly adopt a baby. Or we don’t have to have one at all. But I’m not going to break up with you if you can’t get pregnant. There are other options we can try.”
I looked up at Colson, my face drenched in tears yet again. “Really?”
He smiled and wiped my face with his thumbs. “I promise baby. If it’ll make you feel better, we can book you for a doctor’s appointment and see if there’s anything else that can be done.”
I nodded. “I’d like that, I just want to know for sure if there’s anything wrong with me.”
~~~~~~
A few days later, Colson and I sat in the doctor’s office, waiting for him to return with the results of the tests I had just taken. My legs were bouncing with anxiousness as we waited for the doctor to return. Unlike a few days before, Colson didn’t try to calm me down this time, as he was just as anxious as I was.
My heart began to beat a little faster as the doctor walked in with a clipboard in his hands. He pulled up a chair and sat across from us, scanning the clipboard. His prolonged silence made me even more anxious.
“Miss. (Y/L/N), if you don’t mind me asking, when was your last menstruation cycle?”
The question took me by surprise and I wasn’t sure if it should worry me or not that he asked. “Uh...like a little over a month ago I think.”
The doctor nodded. “And you said that the test you took a few days ago came back negative?”
My heart slowly began to sank as I solemnly nodded. Colson squeezed my hand to try and reassure me, but I knew whatever the doctor said next was not about to be good.
“Congratulations, Mr. Baker and Miss. (Y/L/N), you’re pregnant.”
I covered my mouth to stifle the scream of shock that came out. Colson was to his feet in seconds, lifting me up and hugging me tightly. He planted a deep kiss on my lips and for a second, both of us forgot that we were in a doctor’s office. It wasn’t until he laughed that we pulled away.
“But wait,” I said once Colson set me down. “The test came back as negative, and I haven’t had any other signs. How can that be right?”
“You’re in the very early stages,” the doctor explained. “Only a few weeks along. At this early on in the pregnancy, a false positive on a test is possible. If you test too soon after a missed menstruation cycle, there’s a high chance the test will come back negative. It’s why so many people might not think they’re pregnant after getting a negative on a test a day or two after they missed their period, only to find out a week later that they were actually pregnant.”
It was at that moment that I realized my period had been late, for the first time ever. I was so focused on hoping that I was pregnant that I didn’t even question how long it had been since my last period.
I turned to Colson, who’s smile mirrored mine. The doctor gave us some advice and booked us an appointment in a few months time to see how the baby was developing. Once we left the office, Colson took me in his arms again and kissed me deeply.
“We’re gonna have a baby,” he murmured against my lips.
“We’re gonna have a baby!” I repeated before kissing him again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y/N POV
I take a deep breath as I pull out my phone and set the timer, setting the test next to two others. Stupid, I chastise myself, putting yourself in this position again. I lean against the counter before sliding down onto the floor, still being mindful of my arm. I stare blankly at the wall and let my mind wander. We were careless, so caught up in the moment, nothing else seemed to matter at the time. What were the odds of this happening again? The thought hadn’t even entered my brain until after Crowley’s attack. It’s been over a week, and I can still hear his words as clear as the day he said them. Sam didn’t come back to you, choosing girl after girl. Would you like to know the real cause of your parent’s accident? You are the ultimate bargaining chips. He must’ve known; it would explain his taunts about having Cordy call him ‘father.’ The buzzing of my phone pulls me out of my thoughts, I expect to see the timer, but it’s Dean’s name popping up on the caller ID. I reject the call without a second thought; he and Sam are the last people I want to talk to right now.
I haven’t even had the chance to put my phone back down before it starts vibrating again. A glance tells me it’s Dean calling again. “It’s 7 am, Dean,” I grumble, staring down at my phone. Whatever is causing him to reach out after nearly three months of complete silence must be important, at least to him. I hesitate briefly before rejecting the call.
I check the timer, two minutes. Crowley’s voice is in my head, and I’m back to that night again. Your precious Y/N is running out of time, Sam. As soon as we moved in, I was going to reach out to Sam, tell him I was ready for him to be a part of mine and Cordy’s lives. We still had our issues to work through, but Cordy had expressed more than once that she was ready to know him, and at the time, I started to forgive him. Sam repeatedly called after Crowley had left me, but Crowley’s words were all too fresh in my mind.
I peer into my room to see Cordy sleeping soundly in my bed. She’s afraid to leave me at night, something that I can’t blame her for. As I watch her sleep, my mind drifts back to the morning after Crowley’s attack.
I was trying to keep myself calm as I read through Sam’s multiple apology-ridden messages. I didn’t care that he was sorry; it couldn’t make up for the fact he and Dean had left us so utterly vulnerable to their enemies. I watched from the living room window as Cordy walked back over; I didn’t know how to explain my injury to her and how much of the truth I could tell her without further traumatizing her. I couldn’t lie my way out of it, but demons were not something I knew how to explain to a ten-year-old. Tears welled in Cordy’s eyes the minute she caught sight of me; she could see through my forced smile, she ran to me and wrapped her arms tight around my waist.
“Hey.” I tried to soothe her, using my good arm to rub a hand down her back. “It’s okay, I’m okay,” I half lied. “Couple of months, and I’ll be good as new.”
Cordy’s grip briefly loosened when I moved us onto the couch, I couldn’t pick her up like I wanted to, but I wasn’t going to stop her from crawling into my lap and burying her head into my shoulder. I let her weep against me; through her sobs, I heard a muffled ‘mom.’
It had been weeks since she’d called out for mom or dad when she was scared. By the time we had moved, her nightmares about the accident had become fewer and farther in between. Cordy had taken to climbing into my bed and letting me lull her back to sleep whenever one had woken her up.
“I know,” I whispered, trying to keep my tears at bay. “I miss them too.”
Cordy pulled away, her face blotchy, eyes blood-shot, and shook her head. “You’re my mom, Y/N,” she mumbled. “I do-don’t wanna lo-lose you too.” Cordy splutters through her tears. “You-you’re all I– I have le-left.”
I choked back a sob; she’s right; we only have each other. As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t count on Sam to be there if something ever did happen to me. Cordy already lost one set of parents; I didn’t want to think about her losing Sam or me.
The vibration of my phone causes me to jump as it brings me back to the present. I sigh as I look down at the phone, rejecting the call. “Take the hint, Dean,” I mutter to myself. I check the timer, thirty seconds. I reach for the first test and vaguely remember an x-ray technician asking me if there was any possibility of me being pregnant. At the time, I didn’t even think about it; my night with Sam was the furthest thing on my mind.
I mindlessly chew away at my fingernails as the phone vibrates again, and I silently plead for it to stop. Relief floods through me when it does; maybe it’s finally gotten through to Dean that I don’t want to speak to him. The timer chirps and I grab the test off the counter and cover the results box with my hands. I close my eyes for a brief moment, praying that somehow I’m wrong. I take a shuddering breath as I slowly open my eyes, letting them land on the word ‘pregnant.’
Dean’s name briefly fills the screen again before I reject the call, setting my phone down on the tile. Surely he’ll get the message that I am intentionally not answering. I pull the second test off of the counter, pregnant. I don’t bother with the third. Even if somehow it was negative, the two positive pregnancy tests can’t both be wrong. I choke back a sob as I run through all of my options in my head. I can’t believe this is happening again. What am I going to tell Cordy? What about Sam? We weren’t in a good place when he left—that stupid fight.
The loud buzzing doesn’t just annoy me this time; it makes me want to pick up my phone and throw it against the wall. I grab my phone off the floor, and for a brief moment, I think of smashing into hundreds of pieces. I shake the thought out of my head before contemplating whether I should answer the call, my thumb hovering between the red and green circles.
“I’ve got nothing to say to you, Dean,” I say before ending the call, not giving him the chance to respond. I look back down at the test again, praying, willing it to change. I know it won’t, it was the first time I had sex in months, and of course, it’s with Sam fucking Winchester who had to go and get me pregnant. “Perfect vessel for Winchester children,” I mumble and let out a dry laugh. I wonder if the angels knew about this one, I chuckle to try to keep myself from crying, but the tears fall anyway, and my laughter quickly devolves into sobbing. Pregnant. Again. My phone chirps, 6 missed calls - Dean Winchester.
“Fuck,” I mutter as his name pops up again. I push the bathroom door closed, not wanting to wake Cordy. I clear my throat and wipe the tears away, taking a long and calming breath before accepting the call. “What do you want, Dean?”
“Y/N, don’t hang up, please, just–” Dean sighs, “I know you’re pissed, and you have every right, but–”
“Pissed is the understatement of the year.”
“Y/N–”
“The fucking King of Hell showed up on my doorstep. Came into my home and threatened the lives of both my daughter and me.” I hiss while trying to keep my voice down. “You know, I actually believed Sam when he said that Cas would show up if I prayed to him. Do you wanna know how many times I prayed for him to help? He did nothing, showing up hours later, giving some bullshit excuse about us not being in ‘real’ danger.”
“I–”
“What’s your excuse, Dean? Are you calling to apologize? You think that’ll make it all better? I don’t want your apology.” I can hear him huffing in anger on the other end. “Have a nice life, Dean.”
“Wait just a goddamn minute, Y/N,” he snaps before letting out a loud sigh and softening his voice. “I– I’m sorry. You have to believe that we didn’t know. If we even thought there was a chance of Crowley... we wouldn’t have let it happen. Sammy and I would’ve shown you how to protect yourself. Y/N, Sam has more guilt about Crowley than you’ll ever know. We didn’t think he knew about you or Cordy.”
“He said he’d been watching me for weeks,” I say, memories of that night playing in my head. “Weeks, Dean.”
“You would have been safe if you had stayed in Weldon,” Dean grumbles.
“The phone works both ways, Dean,” I murmur, trying to lessen my own guilt about leaving. “If you or Sam had bothered to keep in touch, you’d have known that we were planning to move.”
“Bullshit, Y/N,” Dean growls. “You stopped responding to Sam’s messages the day we left Weldon. You didn’t want to accept his apology, and at the time, as much as it broke him, he understood. You had no intention of telling us that you were moving. You can spout out crap about us not reaching out to you, Y/N, but you said it yourself, the phone works both ways.”
I let Dean’s words sink in. I’d threatened Sam with taking Cordy far away from him, but that wasn’t what the move was about; Cordy and I needed a change. I was able to leave so much of my baggage behind. I didn’t have to lie anymore; I didn’t have to carry the shame that my parents had made me feel for years.
“You asked for space, for time, and we were– are trying to respect that. You asked us to leave Weldon, and we did. I practically had to drag Sam outta there. He didn’t wanna leave you again, but I got his ass in the car, and we left. And all I heard from Weldon to Lebanon was how he wanted to tell you how sorry he was and that he was afraid that you would feel abandoned by him. It killed him to leave you and Cordy; you two are the only family we have left, and then you moved away without a single word. If you’d told us that you were planning on leaving Weldon, we would’ve found a way to protect you and Cordy. If you weren’t ready to be around Sam, we could’ve sent another hunter to protect you and Cordy.”
“We shouldn’t need protection, Dean. For ten years, we didn’t need protection. But the moment Sam steps back into my life, suddenly Cordy and I are targets for your enemies,” I let my eyes fall back on to the test in my hands. “I have to protect my family, Dean, and if that means Sam can’t be a part of our lives, then so be it. I refuse to live in constant fear that something like that could happen again. I’m not going to be some damsel in distress. I told Cas; Cordy and I are not bargaining chips.”
“The Crowley who attacked you doesn't exist anymore, Y/N. He's no longer the King of Hell; he's nothing more than a regular human. Crowley can't hurt you or Cordy ever again.”
“You can’t expect me to believe that’s true, Dean.”
“It is, Y/N.” Dean sighs, “Cas told us he warded your house. Wherever you are, you and Cordy are safe. I give you my word.”
“Your word isn’t the one I want, Dean. You’re not the reason Crowley came after us; Sam is. All of it was about him and me.”
“You don’t think that I care–?”
“I know you do, Dean,” I sigh, “but you’re on the phone with me instead of Sam. You’re the one playing peace-keeper. Sam should be the one telling me all of these things, not you. If Sam wants me to forgive him and think about letting him back into mine and Cordy’s life, then I need to hear it from him.”
Dean is silent on the other line, and through the static of the phone, I can hear a muffled voice coming through a speaker. A deep breath cuts through the silence before he speaks again.
“Sam’s– Sammy’s hurt, Y/N,” Dean’s voice hitches as if he’s trying to keep himself calm. “It’s– it’s bad.” Suddenly, all the background noises I’ve been hearing make sense. “He was doing okay for a couple of days, but then he took a turn for the worse. Sam’s…” Dean trails off briefly, and I fear that I already know what his next words will be. “You should be here, Y/N, you and Cordy. Sam needs his girls by his side.”
I smile briefly at Dean’s words before my heart falls into my stomach. There’s something he isn’t telling me, and every breath I try to take becomes more difficult. I grip the test tighter in my hands, and I try to let go of all of my anger that had been residing in me since the night we fought. I regret the last words spoken between us, fueled by rage and fear; we don’t need you; I should’ve taken the words back.
“Where are you?”
“Linwood Memorial Hospital in Randolf, New York.” Dean doesn’t hesitate.
“New York? You’re not in Kansas? I thought–”
“Randolf, New York,” Dean reiterates, “Linwood Memorial Hospital.”
I tell Dean that I will have to get a flight to him, and he insists on giving me a scammed credit card to pay for it. A part of me almost doesn’t want to take it, but after seeing how much such a last-minute flight would cost, I accept it.
I call the school as soon as I hang up with Dean, explaining that Cordy will be out for at least the rest of the week. The receptionist seems to understand, reminding me to reach out to her teachers for lessons and homework.
I step into my closet, grabbing two bags, and begin packing my belongings as quietly as I can. I set my bag down at the top of the stairs before repeating the process in Cordy’s room. I place Cordy’s bag next to my own before glancing back into my room. Cordy’s still sleeping, arms tightly gripping her teddy bear. I don't want to wake her, not yet, so I gently close my bedroom door before making my way downstairs. When I open the front door, there’s nothing but the sounds of nature greeting me. A few of the houses are bathed in an orange light where the sun is just barely peeking over rooftops. I step out onto the dewy grass, setting the bags down. I relish in the quiet of the neighborhood for a moment and let myself get lost in thought.
“Y/N,” a low voice says as their hand lands on my arm.
“Jesus!” I yelp, balling my fist and ready to throw a punch. I turn quickly to see my neighbor, Jason, standing behind me.
“Whoa! Sorry,” Jason puts his hands up in surrender, and I unclench my fist. “Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Someone oughta put a bell on you,” I laugh slightly. “It’s not polite to sneak up on people. Didn’t your mother ever teach you that?”
“I called your name a couple of times,” he shrugs. “I guess you were off somewhere else?”
“Yeah, something like that.” I nod.
“Here, let me help you,” Jason picks up the two bags. “Looks like you’re makin’ a break for it.”
“I guess you could say that,” I shrug and walk towards my car, Jason matching my steps. “Thanks.”
“Don’t tell me we’ve scared you outta the neighborhood already?” Jason chuckles. “Is it Old Lady Nelson?” I try to speak, but he playfully cuts me off. “She’s a witch, you know.”
“Is she?” I raise an eyebrow and pop the trunk. “What kind of witch? Do I need to keep a bucket of water on hand?”
“No, more like the fortune-telling kind,” he grins, slowing his steps, before stopping at the trunk. “She paid me a visit the other day and said I would meet someone.”
“Oh?” I ask as he sets the two bags down, and he nods his head. Suddenly, I’m painfully aware that he’s flirting and that I may be unintentionally encouraging it.
“She said that she would have a-” Jason’s blue eyes dart around me, “a robin’s nest in her yard. Oh!” He dramatically yells as I close the trunk. ”Will you look at that?” He points to the robin’s nest and winks. I shake my head; we both know it was there long before I moved in. “So whaddya say, Y/N? Can I take you out for dinner sometime?”
“Cut right to the chase, don’t you?” I tease him. “Listen, Jason, I think you’re really nice, but–”
“But,” Jason sighs and frowns slightly, “you’re not interested?”
“I’m– I–” I don’t know how to describe my relationship with Sam. He isn’t my boyfriend, but he’s more than just the father of my daughter. “I’m with someone, Cordy’s dad. We’re going to be visiting him for the next couple of days.”
“Shit, Y/N, I’m sorry,” Jason runs his hands through his short hair and gives me an embarrassed smile. “Cynthia told me you were single and has been pushing for me to ask you out. If I’d have known, I wouldn’t have–”
“We have a complicated relationship,” I laugh weakly. “‘Sides you deserve someone who doesn’t have a mountain of baggage.”
“Well, if Mr. Complicated doesn’t wise up, he better be prepared to put up a fight for you,” he teases, and a slight tinge of pink fills his cheeks. “I don’t give up easily, and baggage doesn’t bother me.”
“You’re sweet,” I reach for his arm and gently squeeze it, “but you hardly know me. For all you know, I could be some stage five clinger psychopath or– or an assassin.”
“Then we’ll be two peas in a pod,” Jason smirks, stepping closer to me and brushing a stray hair away from my face. For a moment, I lean into his touch, but I stop myself.
“I have to go,” I exclaim and run back into the house, slamming the door behind me.
I scold myself as I pace my living room. Sam’s in some hospital, and you’re outside flirting with the neighbor? The clock on the wall catches my attention, 8 am, we have to leave soon.
“Y/N?” Cordy’s scratchy voice pulls me out of my thoughts; she looks to be on the verge of tears. “I woke up, and you weren’t there.”
“Oh, kid, I’m sorry.” I close the gap between us and let her settle against me. “I didn’t mean to upset you. I’ve had a busy morning. You and me, we’re going on a trip.”
“Really?” Cordy’s face lights up, “what kind of a trip?”
“We’re gonna visit Sam,” Cordy’s smile grows; this is something she’s wanted for the last month. “He’s sick,” I explain, and Cordy’s smile fades.
“Is he gonna be okay?”
“I hope so, kid. But I don’t know, that’s why we’re gonna go see him.”
*********************************************
When we arrive in Randolf, it’s almost 9 pm. Cordy and I are exhausted, unused to this kind of travel. It makes me wonder how Sam and Dean live in the Impala for hours and sometimes days on end. The hospital’s visiting hours will be over by now, so I send a message to Dean, letting him know that we are staying at a hotel for the night. He tells me that he has already added us to Sam's visitor list and that he would be under the name Dougherty. I crawl into the large bed, Cordy’s already sleeping soundly, and let my mind wander.
Sam is going to make it out of this, isn’t he? Will he be happy when I tell him about the baby? Will he come back to Lawrence with us when all of this is over? Will he walk away from Dean for the three of us? Will Dean let him?
It’s still early when a turning in my stomach makes me bolt towards the bathroom, emptying my stomach into the porcelain bowl.
“Y/N?” Cordy calls from outside the bathroom, and before I can muster out an answer, I feel the bile rising in my throat again. “Y/N? Are you okay?”
“Go back to bed, Cordy,” I say more harshly than I mean to. “I’ll be there in a minute.”
When I open the bathroom door, Cordy is still standing there, tears filling her eyes. “Are you mad at me?” She asks as a tear slips out.
“Oh, kid, I’m sorry I yelled at you,” I crouch down and meet her eyes. “I didn’t mean to.”
“Are you sick too?” Cordy sniffles.
“No,” I shake my head. “I’m– I’m gonna have a baby.”
Guilt overwhelms me as I pull into the hospital’s parking lot; I need Sam to know that I still love him, that all the words exchanged weren’t how I truly felt. Ten years of thinking he had run away, and the anger that exploded from us both drove my words. I know, deep down, that Sam wouldn’t have left if he’d known the truth. We were scared kids and didn’t know how not to believe the words of our parents. I know that if either one of us could go back, we would.
Even though Cas changed her memories, Cordy’s body tenses as we step into the hospital. She grips my hand tightly as we walk to the main desk and check-in. I ask for Sam Dougherty’s room, pulling out my ID and handing it to the receptionist. She smiles warmly as she hands over the visitor passes she printed for us.
“I need to ask you something, Cordy,” I say as I kneel to place the badge on the front of her shirt. “When we get up to Sam’s room, do you want to see him?” She fidgets at the mention of being in a hospital room. “You don’t have to; it’s your decision.”
“I don’t know,” she answers sheepishly. “If you want me to-”
“No, kid. I’m not going to make you do anything you don’t want to. It’s okay if you don’t,” I squeeze her arm. “I know we’ve talked about you getting to know Sam as your dad, but you’ve only met him a couple of times. If you’re not ready to see him, I’m not going to force you.”
“Is he gonna look scary?” She murmurs, looking down at the floor.
I don’t know how to answer the question. Dean said he was hurt badly. If Sam wasn’t going to get better from this, I don’t know if I want her one of her only memories of him to be attached to machines, bruised, and broken. If she’s only going to have one real memory of Sam, let it be of the day that he visited her after the accident.
“How ‘bout,” I offer, “I go and see him first, by myself. And if I think he looks too scary, I’ll tell you.”
“Sammy isn’t gonna be mad?” Cordy looks up to meet my eyes.
“No, of course not,” I say firmly, “he wouldn’t want you to be afraid.” She nods and grabs my hand as we head up to Sam’s room.
I leave Cordy just outside Sam’s room. She looks around for a moment before I hand over my tablet and headphones, letting her drown out the noises of the hospital. I hesitate to leave her, and when a nurse volunteers to sit with her, I graciously accept. I place a kiss on her forehead, whispering one four three in her ear before heading into Sam’s room. I peer into the open door of the room. Sam’s long frame fills the bed. He looks emaciated; his face bruised, eyes and cheeks sunken in, and skin stretched taut over his bones.
Dean’s at his side, hunched over; I can see his mouth moving but can’t make out anything he’s saying. I wipe the forming tears away, knocking softly on the door. Dean jumps slightly at the sound, and a look of relief washes over his face when he sees me.
“Y/N,” Dean frowns when he catches sight of me, his eyes immediately fall on my broken arm. “I’m so sorry,” he whispers as he wraps his arms around me. “Cas said he tried to heal–”
“What happened, Dean?” I pull away from him, focusing my attention on Sam. “How did he get this bad?”
“Did Cas tell you what we were trying to do?”
“Said something about closing Hell Gates,” I can’t take my eyes off of Sam’s body. Dean leads me to a chair, letting me sit down before moving to the opposite side of the bed. He grabs a second chair, pulling it around so that he’s sitting next to me.
“Yeah. What we didn’t know when Sam started them is that to complete the Trials, Sam would have to die.” Dean looks back over to Sam. “I couldn’t let that happen. I tried to convince him to stop, Y/N, but he wouldn’t listen. He couldn’t stop,” Dean seems to be reassuring himself just as much as me. “The only reason he’s probably still alive right now is that he collapsed before he could finish it.”
“Where’s Cas? Can’t he do something?” I ask, hopefully. “He can heal Sam, can’t he?”
“Sam’s been too damaged for months for Cas to do anything,” Dean sighs. “Tried to help a while back, and even then, he couldn’t do anything. I haven’t let that stop me, Y/N,” Dean offers a sad smile. “I’ve tried praying, but Cas won’t answer.”
“What about another angel?” I’m desperate, taking Sam’s lifeless hand in my own. “Cas can’t be the only one who can help.”
“The thing about angels, Y/N, is most of ‘em are dicks.” Dean lets out a pained laugh. “And they’re not exactly fans of Sam and me. Most won’t help even if they can.”
“You have to do something, Dean,” I plead. “You can’t let him die. You said you’d watch out for him. He can’t die, not now; I need him. Me and Cordy, we need him.”
“Y/N.”
“You’re friends with a freaking angel, you know the King of Hell, but you can’t do anything to save Sam? You’re not trying hard enough, Dean.” I direct all of the guilt I’m feeling at Dean; a part of me knows it’s not fair to him, but I can’t help it. “All this will be for nothing if he’s gone. You tried to stop him and now look at him,” I direct my attention back to Sam.
Dean silently takes my verbal lashing, his emerald eyes filling with tears.
“Screw you,” he says, barely above a whisper. “Sam is my brother, and we’ve been through more shit together than you will ever know.” I can hear the pain in Dean’s voice, but he remains calm and quiet, and I notice him discreetly wiping a tear away. “I’ve watched him die too many times already, and I wasn’t gonna let it happen again. I couldn’t let another Winchester grow up without a parent; me and Sam, we practically raised ourselves. Cordy deserves to have both of her parents raising her.”
“Dean–”
“You don’t know how messed up Sam got, Y/N!” Dean’s face reddens, and his voice starts to rise. “He was about to die, and he didn’t even care! If you’d heard what he said in that church– He thinks that you and Cordy are better off without him; that you can just replace him. He’s not replaceable, Y/N. I was trying to talk him off a ledge, and you wanna know the worst part? I’m the reason he got so messed up. I was the one that was supposed to be doing the Trials, not Sam. I could’ve finished them, and he could’ve finally gotten out. I had to save my brother; I will always do whatever it takes to save him. You can put the blame on me for how he is now, but don’t act like you wouldn’t have at least tried to stop him if you were there.”
“Dean,” I can barely speak, “I’m sorry. I just–”
“D’you know what he’s wanted since we were kids?” Dean doesn’t wait for me to respond and focuses back on Sam. “A normal life. He never wanted to be a hunter, follow in dad’s footsteps; he wanted to be his own person. I’m the one who dragged his ass away from Stanford, I’m the reason he wasn’t there when Jessica was murdered, and I know that deep down, a part of him will never be able to forgive me for it. Sam had his chance at normal, but he gave it up for me. If I hadn’t pulled him into that hunt, he probably wouldn’t have come back. He’d be living some apple-pie life with you or Jessica; married, a couple of kids running around, a dog, house with a white picket fence.”
“I don’t have a white picket fence,” I say softly, garnering a small chuckle from Dean. “But, I want all that with him. I want him around, to be a father to Cordy and- and...” I stop myself from saying any more, reluctant to tell him about this baby as well. If I tell him and Sam doesn’t make it through this, I can’t have Dean as a looming presence in Cordy and this baby’s life, reminding all of us of something we can never have. “Before Crowley, I was ready to find a way to make it work with Sam. After Crowley left, I was so scared, Dean, so angry. I still am, but I want us to move past all that. Cordy’s ready to know her dad.”
“Cordy knows?” Dean asks, his eyes going wide at my confession, “I thought you were– You said you didn’t want to tell her, that you wanted to wait until she was ready?” Dean’s brow furrows, and I can hear the anger in his voice. I had insisted to both brothers that Cordy wasn’t ready to know the truth, but now, only a few months later, she was suddenly ready?
“I was,” I focus my attention back on Sam, and I can feel the daggers Dean is staring into me. “That morning, after you left? That box of photos was still out,” I explain. I could tell he thought that I’d lied to him that night. “I’d meant to put them away, but after everything that happened, I was exhausted and pretty much passed out on the couch. When I woke up, Cordy was going through it and started asking questions. She was putting everything together before I could even come up with an excuse. The kid’s too smart for her own good,” I chuckle, and Dean relaxes slightly. “It was rough; Cordy was angry and confused, but she’s adjusting, we both are. She’s been getting used to the idea, and for the last month, she’s been asking me about getting to know Sam.”
“I’ll find a way to get him back to the both of you,” Dean promises, reaching out to give my hand a firm squeeze. “I promise, I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Dean and I sit in silence for a few minutes before a doctor joins us. He explains the extent of Sam’s injuries: massive internal burns, oxygen deprivation, the coma is Sam’s last resort of self-preservation.
“He’s dying,” Dean mutters.
“If he continues on this trajectory, I’m afraid so. The machines may be able to keep him alive, but with injuries such as these–”
“There isn’t anything you can do?” I question the doctor.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but it’s in God’s hands now,” the doctor smiles at me sympathetically.
“God’s hands?” Dean huffs, and his face hardens. “You’re a medical professional, and you’re telling us that my brother’s life is in God’s hands? What, is that supposed to be some sort of– of comfort?”
“Dean,” I sigh, “he’s just saying–”
“No, Y/N,” Dean snaps at me. He immediately gives me an apologetic smile before standing up to meet the doctor at the edge of the bed. “God has nothing to do with this equation. If I wanted to leave it up to God, I wouldn’t have brought him here in the first place. Do your job, save my brother.”
The doctor doesn’t flinch at Dean’s verbal assault, taking it as gracefully as one can. He apologizes again before leaving us alone. Dean refuses to sit back down, pacing around the room and muttering under his breath. I focus back on Sam, squeezing his hand tighter, praying for some kind of response to show that he’s still there, fighting his way back to Cordy and me.
“You have to fight, Sam,” I lean in and whisper. “I didn’t mean what I said that night; I was angry and scared. We do need you. You can’t leave Cordy and me, not like this.”
The room is silent, save for the heart monitor beeping steadily and my sniffling. Dean has stopped pacing, and when I look up, he’s staring at Sam and me, waiting as much as I am for some kind of sign that Sam isn’t giving up. I wipe my tears away and take a long, calming breath before speaking.
“Cordy’s outside,” I say as I leave my seat. “I’m– I’m gonna talk to her, see if she wants to see Sam.”
Dean nods slightly, and as I walk by him, he pulls me into a hug, “I’ll find a way to fix this, Y/N,” he reassures me. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get him better again.”
When I get back to Cordy, she is intensely focused on the tablet in her hands. I take another long inhale, hoping that I can hide the evidence of my tears. I playfully tug at her headphones, pulling her attention away from the tablet, and I see she’s watching a video from a channel called Ghostfacers.
“Learn anything interesting?” I ask as I take the seat next to her.
“Nah,” she shrugs and turns off the tablet, “those guys are weirdos.”
I laugh as she puts the tablet back into my bag. I try to figure out the best way to breach the subject of Sam to Cordy.
“How’s Sammy?” Cordy asks as if she can read my mind, and I give her a tight-lipped smile.
“He’s– He’s not doing okay.” I try to think of a way to explain his condition to her, something that will make sense. “You know how sometimes when you’re sick, you just want to sleep?” Cordy nods. “Well, right now, Sam is really sick, so he’s gonna stay asleep until he’s better.”
“How long is Sammy gonna sleep?” Cordy questions innocently. “Are we gonna stay until he wakes up?”
“I– I don’t know, kid,” I tell her honestly. “It could be days, weeks, or,” I struggle with the next words, “Sam may never wake up.”
Cordy seems to understand what I’m saying, and I’m thankful that I don’t have to say the words, ‘Sam’s dying.’ I don’t push her to respond, letting her think over whatever she may want to say next. I keep my own conflicted feelings at bay; half wants to take her back to Lawrence and never talk about this ever again; the other half wants her to go in and see him so that at least she can get a proper goodbye.
“Can I see him?” Cordy asks after a few moments of silence. “Would that be okay?”
“If that’s what you want, kid,” I grab her hand in mine and gently squeeze it before walking us back towards Sam’s room.
Dean’s still pacing the floor when I walk in; Cordy stays behind me, gripping my hand tightly. I try to move forward, but she pulls back against me, stopping at the doorway. Dean peers around me before closing the gap between us and crouches down to meet Cordy at her eye-level.
“Hey, Princess, do you remember me?” Dean asks sweetly.
Cordy smiles and nods, “Y/N says you’re my uncle.”
“That’s right,” Dean’s eyes shine with pride. “I’m Sammy’s big brother. Do you know what big brothers do?” he asks, and Cordy shakes her head. “We protect our little brothers. We don’t let anything happen to them.”
“Can I talk to him?” She looks between Dean and me. “Is that okay?”
“Sure, kid,” I smile weakly.
Cordy lets go of my hand and makes her way to the empty chair by Sam’s side. Dean gives my arm a reassuring squeeze as I walk by, and I sit in the chair that he previously occupied. Cordy doesn’t say anything at first, seemingly studying Sam silently, she wasn’t one to normally shy away from a conversation, but this is a new experience for her.
“Why don’t you tell Sam about school?” I suggest, knowing that once she starts talking, it’ll be hard to get her to stop.
Cordy nods before explaining in unbelievable detail about her teachers and classmates. She tells him all about our new house and how she decorated her room because she’s not a little kid anymore, which causes a small laugh from both Dean and me. She speaks non-stop for what seems like hours, telling Sam everything he would ever need to know to become integrated into our lives.
“Definitely Sam’s kid,” Dean jokes from the edge of the bed, listening just as intently as Sam would. Cordy doesn’t pay any attention and goes right back to chattering.
After a few minutes, Dean gets up and gestures for me to join him outside the room. He tells me he has a plan, that it could be our only hope to save Sam, and gently orders me not to let anyone else into the room until he gets back. I want to pry for more details, but it must be a long-shot or something dangerous if Dean’s not giving them.
When I walk back into the room, Cordy is telling Sam how she hopes that he will be awake for her birthday, and my heart breaks. Unless Dean can pull off some miracle, Sam won’t recover from this; his body is far too damaged.
When Dean returns a half-hour later, a bruise is blossoming on his cheek as if he’s been in a fight, and a large man follows closely behind him. Something about him is unsettling, and Cordy stops speaking when she sees him, leaving her seat to move into my lap.
“Y/N, I think you should take Cordy outside,” Dean suggests, and the man eyes the two of us.
For a moment, I want to protest, but Dean hardens his face, and it seems that he’s as wary of this stranger as I am.
“Okay,” I nod, getting out of the chair and grabbing Cordy by the hand. She tugs against me and takes a few steps towards the head of the bed. She leans over so much that only her toes are touching the ground and does her best to hug Sam and places a kiss on his cheek. If I had any less control over myself, I’d be a sobbing mess at the sight—damn hormones.
I give Cordy a small smile when she turns around and returns her hand to mine. I settle her back into the same seat before returning to Sam’s room.
“Dean? What’s going on? Who is this?”
“My name is Ezekiel,” the man faces me, “I am not here to harm you or your daughter, Y/N.”
“How do you–”
“Angel,” Dean answers before I can finish asking my question. “He’s here to help, right?” Ezekiel nods. “Even cut-off from Heaven, you can still heal him, can’t you?”
“Your brother is very weak.”
“No, no,” Dean growls, “I saved your life, and you said you could help. That was our deal: I fight, you save.”
“Please,” I say, stepping closer to Ezekiel. “You can’t do anything?”
“There are no good ways, I’m afraid.”
“Then what are some of the bad ones?” Dean says. “He’s dying, let’s hear ‘em, good or bad.”
Ezekiel explains that he can help from the inside. I watch as Dean contemplates what Ezekiel says, looking to me for some kind of relief. I shake my head, and I tell him I don’t understand.
“Possession,” Dean explains.
“It is your decision, Y/N, and yours, Dean,” Ezekiel sits down.
“No, it’s not,” Dean murmurs. “It’s Sam’s. He’d never say yes to being some angel’s meatsuit.”
“I understand, but without my help, your brother will die.”
Dean turns his attention to Sam and sighs, “do it.”
“Dean,” I pull him towards me. “You can’t seriously be considering this.”
“He can fix Sam, Y/N!” Dean argues. “This is the only solution I can think of that doesn’t involve something worse.”
“Worse than you letting some angel possess him?” I question in disbelief. “I know you want to help him, Dean. But this isn’t the way, tell me you don’t know that.”
“What, you want to leave it in God's hands? Just wait and see if maybe he comes out of this? Those Trials– The person completing them is meant to die; it’s supposed to be the ultimate sacrifice. I say Sam’s sacrificed enough in his life. He deserves to live, Y/N.”
“I don’t want him gone either, Dean, but this should be his choice, not yours or mine. You know him better than anyone. Do you think this is how he’d want you to save him? He wouldn’t want this, Dean. I don’t want this.”
“You told me to fix him, that you want to keep him in your life, Y/N. That’s what I’m doing.”
“I know, but–” I turn my gaze to Ezekiel and then back to Sam. “This isn’t right, Dean. You know it isn’t.”
Dean shrugs me off of him and steps closer to Ezekiel, and they begin talking in hushed tones. My eyes land on Sam, and for a moment, I consider what Dean is saying, thinking that it may be the only way to keep Sam in my and Cordy’s lives. I watch Ezekiel; his voice is too low for me to make out any exact words. There’s something he’s not telling us. Ezekiel repeats his offer.
“He’d never say yes to you,” Dean murmurs.
“But he would say yes to you or Y/N,” Ezekiel offers, his eyes land between us. "If you want me to help Sam, we must act quickly." Despite his words, there is no urgency in Ezekiel's voice, no emotion. "Your brother doesn't have much time."
"No," I murmur, shaking my head when Dean faces me. "You're not going to use me to manipulate Sam. There's gotta be another way, Dean."
“There's not, Y/N," Dean sighs. "You heard the doctor; there's nothing more they can do."
"That's not what he said, Dean," I argue, even though from what we were told, there was little chance of Sam recovering. I have to hope that somehow he can get better. "People wake up from comas every day. There are new therapies–"
"They will not work, Y/N," Ezekiel states matter-of-factly. "The damage done to Sam's body cannot be healed by mere mortals. Sam will die unless you allow me to help."
"If I’m going to consider this, you show me, prove to me how bad he is," Dean's desperate; we both are. Ezekiel moves, placing one hand on Sam and the other on Dean, and both men go still for a few moments. I stand there, unable to do anything but watch as the heart monitor beeps become further apart.
"What're you doing, Sam?" Dean says barely above a whisper. He turns to face me again, and I can see the fear and panic playing on his face. He turns back to Ezekiel. "Go in as me to convince him."
"Dean!"
“Tell him I gotta plan, that he has to trust me," Dean ignores me and instructs Ezekiel. "And– and that he has a kid that needs him."
I can’t take it anymore, and I don’t want to be anymore complicit in Dean letting Ezekiel possess Sam than I already am. Dean and Ezekiel are too caught up in their conversation to notice me walking towards Sam. If Dean wants Ezekiel to save Sam, he's not going to use us to do it.
I lean forward and whisper in his ear, “I’m sorry.” I squeeze Sam’s lifeless hand and place a kiss on his forehead. "One four three."
I don’t say anything else to Dean or Ezekiel and reluctantly leave the room. I try to keep myself calm when I get back to Cordy, giving her a pained smile that I hope she doesn't see through. She doesn’t question me when I take her hand in mine and begin walking us towards the elevators. I know I’ll have to explain why we’re leaving at some point, but I can’t do it now, not when I can hardly wrap my brain around it.
We’re halfway down the hall when I hear Dean calling after me, I do my best to ignore it, but it becomes more difficult when Cordy points it out as if somehow I don’t hear him. Dean's voice continues to follow, and I can see Cordy giving me a questioning look out of the corner of my eye.
“Y/N!” Dean’s hand lands on my shoulder, only moments after we reach the elevator bay. “Don’t leave, please, I’m begging you,” he pleads. “It’s the only way.”
"You're not doing this in front of Cordy, Dean," I scold him before turning my attention to Cordy. "Go take a seat over there, please," I gesture to a row of empty chairs.
"But, Y/N–" Cordy tries to protest.
"Now, Cordy." She pouts, and once she is far enough away that she can no longer hear us, Dean tries to start in again, but I beat him to it. "How fucking dare you. You think I'm gonna let you use Cordy and me to trick Sam into letting some,” I lower my voice as a staff worker walks by, “angel possess him?”
"I’m doing this for you, for Cordy.”
“You’re doing this for you, Dean,” I argue back. “You don’t even know this guy. He could be lying to you. How do you know he’s not going to just–” I can feel myself getting worked up and take a deep breath. “I might not know anything about angels, but you can’t tell me that Ezekiel doesn’t seem to be a little off?”
“So, what, you just– just want to let him die? You're ready to just give up on him?” Dean’s face grows red, and his forehead crinkles.
“Stop it, Dean,” I snap. “I want him back too, but this isn’t the way.” I take a deep breath. “I'm not okay with this, Dean, and you know Sam wouldn't be either."
“What about Cordy, everything you've told me? You want her to grow up without her dad?”
“Screw you, Dean.” I bite back, the palm of my hand connecting with his cheek. “Cordy is my kid and the most important person in my world. I won’t let you guilt me into thinking you're doing this for her.”
“We’re outta options, Y/N. What else do you want me to do? I can’t– I won’t walk away when there’s a chance to save him. Sam’ll–”
“Sam will never forgive you, Dean.”
“He might be pissed at me for the rest of his life, but at least he’ll be alive, Y/N.”
"I can't stop you, Dean. But if you go through with it: making Sam's choice for him, then you're making mine too." I call out for Cordy, and she joins me by my side again. "Say goodbye to Dean," I instruct her gently, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Don't do this," Dean whispers, and I shake my head, twisting slightly to press the button on the wall. I can't stay, not when I have two other people to think about. "Please."
Cordy hesitantly places her arms around Dean and mumbles goodbye to him. When she steps back, I lay my hands on her shoulder and pull her closer to me so that she can't see the tears slipping from my eyes.
"Goodbye, Dean," I say as I hear the doors ding open and turn around to step into the elevator. Dean's emerald eyes are filled with tears as I face him a final time. "I hope you make the right choice," I whisper as the doors close.
As we exit the hospital, Cordy questions why we’re leaving, and I struggle to find an answer. We'll be back on a plane to Lawrence tomorrow, and I do everything I can to evade her questions about Sam, eventually settling on Sam may never wake up.
We are walking into the house when a backfiring car sends me over the edge. Cordy helplessly watches as I’m thrust back into my memories of the night of the werewolf attack; its amber eyes staring me down, its claws swiping at me, how I had to lie to everyone about what happened, how I still have to. Sam never leaving my side until we were pulled apart by my parents.
My whole world is crashing down around me, and all I want is Sam. I want to feel his arms around me again, telling me that everything will be okay. I want to sink my body into his, taking solace in his comforting embrace, and let myself get lost in him. I want him to be with us forever, having the family he’s wanted since I told him I was pregnant all those years ago.
My Sam may be gone forever, and the only thing I can do is pray that Dean made the right decision.
Three Years Later
“Cordelia Mary!” I yell from the bottom of the stairs. “Your butt better be down here in five minutes.”
“Mo-om!” I hear her door opening, and she steps onto the landing. “That’s not enough time–”
“Too bad, kid,” I huff. “I mean it, Cordy, five minutes, or I'm taking your phone away.” A grumbled okay comes from the top of the stairs. I head back towards the kitchen, blue and green orbs watching me as I walk back in. “What’re we gonna do about her, Sammy?” I laugh as I bend down and scoop him up in my arms. “No ideas, huh?”
"You yell at sissy." He giggles when I nuzzle into his neck and blow raspberries on his chubby cheeks. “Sissy in t’ouble?"
"No, baby. Sissy isn't in trouble," I sit him down in his chair and run my fingers through his chestnut locks. Sammy’s eyes widen, and a smile forms when he looks behind me.
Large hands wrapping around my waist cause me to jump back and let out a yelp. I turn around to a cheeky grin; he’s obviously very proud of himself.
“You jerk,” I swat at his chest, trying to retain my serious demeanor, which becomes harder to do as Sammy’s laughter fills the kitchen. Warm, comforting arms pull me closer to him. I let my hands settle on the back of his neck, curling my fingers in his hair. He leans down to place a tender kiss on my lips, letting his two-day scruff scratch against my lips. “I don’t know why I put up with you sometimes.” I roll my eyes playfully at him.
“You say that, but,” his lips move to the shell of my ear, “we both know exactly why you put up with me.” He pulls back and gives me a wink. His hand leaves my waist and delicately takes my left hand into his kissing the diamond ring still settling on my finger. “‘Sides, you love me, and you know it.”
“Love?” I scoff, trying to hide my smile. “I don’t know if I would say that. Not if you insist on sneaking up on me all the time.”
“Sammy saw me, didn’t you?” I turn in his embrace, letting my back settle against his chest, and his arms stay tight around me. Sammy giggles and shakes his head. “Traitor,” he whispers.
I curl my hands around his arms; it has taken us so long to get here, something I never thought would happen. The watch on his wrist alerts me to the time, and I gently pull away from him, making my way back towards the stairs.
“Cordy! I’m serious!” I yell up the stairs, “You’d better be down here in two minutes!”
"Do you want me to talk to her?” he asks as I walk back into the kitchen. He’s sitting down next to Sammy, cutting fruit into halves as Sammy tries shoveling the food into his mouth. “See what the problem is?"
"She's a teenager; that's the problem," I laugh, taking a seat at the table. “Didn’t think you’d be here three years ago, did you?”
“What do you mean?” His eyebrow furrows in confusion.
“Raising a teenager and a toddler with someone who works ridiculous hours and has serious abandonment issues,” I keep my tone light, but he knows the insecurity behind my words.
“Y/N,” Jason reaches for my hand and gently squeezes it. “I told you a long time ago, I don’t give up that easily. If I didn’t think I could handle it, I wouldn’t have pursued you for as long as I did,” he says with a chuckle. “I love you, Y/N; Cordy and Sammy, they may not be mine, but I’ll never treat them any different than if they were. I’m never gonna walk away from you or them.”
Cordy is downstairs just as I’m about to call out for her again. She chatters away as she eats her breakfast, only to be interrupted by Sammy’s need to chime in. She placates her little brother, and we all listen intently as he struggles to connect one thought to another.
“C’mon, kid,” I stand up from the table, “it’s our turn to carpool; go get Ava.”
She quickly gets out of her chair and places a kiss on Sammy’s cheek. She lets Jason pull her in for a quick hug before grabbing her backpack and making for the front door. I lean down and place a kiss on his lips before doing the same with Sammy. By the time I’m outside, Cordy and Ava are both in the back seat, deep in conversation.
I drop the girls off at school and make my way back home, ready to sleep for hours and thankful that I have the next two days off. Jason plans his schedule around mine so that one of us can be home with Cordy and Sammy more often than not. On a day like today, when I’m coming off a twelve-hour shift from the hospital, he’ll leave late in the morning and come back in the early afternoon. I find it comforting to know that I will never have to worry about him not returning from a job.
Jason and Sammy are sitting on the living room floor when I walk through the door, watching some kids show that I can’t quite place. I laugh to myself when I notice that Jason seems to be just as invested as Sammy. I take the opportunity to sneak up on him, and Jason nearly jumps to his feet when my hands land on his back. Sammy lets out a loud, high-pitched squeal and claps his chubby hands together, laughing as Jason chuckles.
“Consider that your payback,” I giggle as he turns around, wrapping my arms around his neck, and he lands a playful swat on my ass.
"You'll pay for that later," he teases before leaning forward to press a kiss on my lips.
I sit with them for as long as I can before exhaustion starts to overpower my will to stay awake—damn midnight shifts.
I make my way upstairs and crawl into the comfort of my bed, allowing sleep to finally take me. The bed dips and the warmth of a body where there was once cold causes me to stir, and I roll over, opening my eyes to meet Jason’s blue ones. I smile sleepily as he presses his lips on my forehead and tells me that he’s put Sammy down for his nap. I pull his face downward, allowing him to kiss me properly. Jason holds me close, pulling me flush against him, letting me take comfort in his warm embrace until I’m asleep again.
“Mama.” Sammy’s small voice wakes me, and I open my eyes to see him reach for the edge of the bed, his curls matted on one side. “Wake up, mama!”
“Hey, baby,” I coo, trying to shake the hoarseness away. I swing my legs over the bed and reach for Sammy, pulling him into my lap. “Did you have a good nap?”
“Good nap, mama,” he repeats.
“Are you ready for a snack?” I ask as I stand up, letting Sammy settle on my hip.
“Hung’y, mama,” Sammy happily nods as we make our way downstairs.
I set Sammy down in his pack n’ play and pour some Puffs into a bowl, letting his loud crunching and noisy toys fill the kitchen as I fix us something to eat. As I’m setting the plates down, I hear a knock on the front door.
“Ugh, every time,” I complain, taking a small piece of apple and placing it in my mouth. “I’ll be back in just a minute, okay?”
“‘Kay, mama,” Sammy says as he picks up another puff.
Another rapping comes from the door, this one louder than the last, probably some salesperson, I murmur. When I open the door, all I see at first is a broad, tall body covered by a blue plaid shirt, and as I let my eyes travel up, I meet a pair of eyes that I never thought I’d see again.
“Sam.”
“Y/N/N.”
My heart races at the sound of my name on his lips, but I can’t move; the last time I saw Sam, Dean was about to let an angel possess him. What if this wasn’t Sam? What if this was Ezekiel? I eye him suspiciously. Should I call Cas?
“It’s me, Y/N/N,” Sam says as if he can read my mind.
“No.” I shake my head and attempt to close the door. “I don’t know who or what you are, but you stay away from my family and me.”
“Y/N/N, baby, it’s me." Sam gently steps forward and stops the door. "We met Thanksgiving 2002,” he offers. “I saved you from a werewolf, you clung to me the whole night, and I started falling for you right then. I had to convince my dad to let me stay, I told him it was for school, but it’s ‘cause I wanted to stay close to you. The first time you said ‘I love you’ was Valentine’s Day; we went to The Tavern, and you were concerned about the prices. The day you told me you were pregnant– it was one of the happiest days of my life, even though I was scared shitless. I couldn’t believe it when I saw you again at Joe’s. I wanted to tell you right then and there how much I missed you; how sorry I was–”
“You’re rambling,” I murmur, reaching out and pressing my palm to his cheek, and he leans into my touch. Sam wraps his arms around me, squeezing me tightly as if he’s afraid to let me go.
“What– what’re you doing here? How–?” I mumble into his chest.
“Cas,” Sam takes a deep breath. I let him hold on to me while I try to keep myself calm. “Told us you were in Lawrence; I can’t tell you how pissed Dean–” I pull away slightly, and Sam shakes his head. “Quick search gave me your address,” he gives me an embarrassed smile that quickly fades. Sam’s embrace around me loosens, and I step back to scan his face. The dark circles under his eyes hint at the fact that it’s probably been days since he last slept. “I guess I should have called first?” Sam lets out a laugh that seems to be hiding pained thoughts.
“It’s not that,” I shake my head. “I– I can’t believe you’re here. I didn’t think–”
Sam takes my hand in his rubbing it gently, and gives me a small smile. His brow furrows, and his smile quickly fades as his eyes travel down toward our connected hands.
“You’re married,” Sam states, brushing his thumb over the ring on my finger. “Of course you are." He lets go and shakes his head, seemingly in disbelief. “I’ll just– I’ll go. I don’t–”
“Wait, Sam,” I stop him. “Come in, please,” I insist. Sam nods his head warily, and I step aside so that he can walk in. I can hardly form a coherent thought as he walks into my house. He doesn’t make it far in before stopping, reaching out to touch a photo hanging on the wall. Even without a clear view, I know it’s of Cordy, taken only a few weeks ago on the first day of school. The smile that forms on Sam’s face is instant, and I can see his eyes beginning to water.
“Corie, she’s– she’s beautiful, Y/N/N,” he says, eyes never leaving the frame.
I join him in front of the photo, and I watch as he studies it intensely. "Let's talk," I whisper as I move away from the wall and towards the kitchen. My eyes immediately fall on Sammy when I walk back in, who’s keeping himself busy with one of his many toys, smiling at the random noises coming from him. I turn around when I can no longer feel Sam’s presence behind me, and I see him staring blankly at Sammy through the mesh material.
“You– you had a baby,” Sam murmurs, taking his eyes off the toddler and gives me a sad smile. “I’m happy for you, Y/N/N,” Sam’s words are hollow. “I'm sure Corie’s a great big sister."
“She tries,” I laugh slightly, “maybe Dean could–”
“Dean’s dead.” Sam cuts me off, his bluntness taking me by surprise. “He sacrificed himself so that we could be together– our family could be together,” Sam’s jaw clenches slightly, and his face reddens. “But I come back here, and you’re married, and have another kid–”
“Sam,” I move towards him. I know how it must look—that shortly after we last saw each other, I found someone else; that I replaced him. “I need to tell you–”
“No, Y/N/N, you don’t have to explain yourself to me,” Voice laced with anger, Sam stiffens before taking a few steps back. “It’s been three years,” He turns around and heads back towards the front of the house. "I couldn’t expect you to wait around forever, could I?”
“Sam–!” I try to get his attention before he leaves, but he ignores me. I grab Sammy and chase him down as best I can with a toddler in my arms.
“I just– I want to be in Corie’s life, Y/N/N,” Sam says as he reaches for the door. “I want to know my daughter, and I want her to know me. I’m out of the life. Without Dean, I can’t do it; I’m not a hunter anymore. Talk it over with your husband; I’ll do whatever you want, Y/N/N, please, just don’t keep Corie away from me.”
“Sam, wait, please–” He’s halfway across the lawn when I stop him, my free hand landing on his shoulder. Sam stills but doesn’t turn around. I walk around him so that I’m standing in front of him. Sam’s eyes are bloodshot, tears flowing freely from them as he stares at the ground. “Stay.”
“I can’t,” Sam looks up to meet my gaze. “I can’t stay and not be with you, Y/N/N. You and Corie– You’re a real family now,” his eyes briefly land on Sammy again, who’s tugging at the necklace Sam gave me. “I’m not going to stand in your way. You and your husband–”
“Stop, Sam,” I plead, reaching up to wipe his tear-stained cheeks. “I’m so sorry about Dean.”
“We didn’t have any other choice,” Sam murmurs, leaning into my touch as I tuck back some of his fallen hair behind his ear. “Dean, he– he made me promise to come to find you, get our family back. Said that he wanted us to be together, made Cas tell me where you were. I-I didn’t think...” Sam shakes his head and his voice trembles. “I-I wanna stay nearby so that I can stay close to Corie.”
“Mama, look!” Sammy points to Jason’s truck as it pulls into the driveway and tries to squirm out of my hold. “Daddy!” By the time Sammy is down, Jason is already heading towards us. Sammy is wobbly on his feet as he makes for Jason, who lifts him into his arms, causing a giggle to leave Sammy.
“Hey, babe,” Jason places a light kiss on my lips and lets his free hand around settle on my waist. “Who’s this?”
“Jason, this is Sam,” I say cautiously. Jason’s brows raise in surprise as he seemingly puts it together. Sam doesn’t move, only narrowing his eyes on Jason. “Sam, this is Jason.”
“I’ve heard a lot about you,” Jason offers his hand to Sam, and I know he’s trying to play nice. Sam doesn’t move, giving him a tight-lipped smile and a nod. Jason closes his hand and brings it back to his side. “I’m gonna take him inside,” Jason gestures to Sammy, breaking the growing tension between the three of us. “I can hear this one’s stomach growling,” he jokes. “You hungry, buddy?”
Sammy nods his head excitedly, and Jason lets him down onto the grass. Sammy is tugging at his arm, guiding Jason back towards the house.
“It was nice meeting you, Sam,” Jason says after taking a few steps away from us. Sam doesn’t respond again, only giving another nod.
Jason disappears back inside the house, leaving Sam and me alone on the lawn. I don’t know how to tell him everything that I need to.
“He’s cute,” Sam says half-heartedly, and I lift my brow in confusion, “The kid. I guess your husband is too. How long have you been together?”
“Jason isn’t– we’re not married,” I finally get the chance to correct him. “He proposed a couple of weeks ago.”
“Is he good to you?” Sam takes a step closer to me. “He treats you and Corie right? Because if he’s not–”
“He’s been good for us, all of us. Stepped into a role when he could’ve run the other direction,” I laugh slightly.
I can see that Sam has more questions, but my front yard’s public nature makes it difficult. Realizing that Cordy will be home in a couple of hours, I suggest going somewhere more private, promising to answer all of his questions. Sam agrees, and I run back into the house to redress and tell Jason that Sam and I need to discuss everything alone. Jason hesitates, but he reluctantly agrees that it would be for the best. I leave him and Sammy with a kiss, promising to be back in a few hours.
"Dean said that you came to the hospital." Sam sits down across from me at the diner, nodding politely at the waitress as she drops off our two coffees.
"I had to," I murmur, bringing the ceramic cup to my lips and taking a sip. "I'm sorry that I didn't stay. I wanted to, but something about Ezekiel and what Dean wanted him to do, it didn't feel right."
"It's okay," Sam assures me and reaches across the table to take my hand in his. "Ezekiel, he– he wasn’t who he said he was, he lied to Dean from the start, didn’t even tell him his real name, Gadreel. When Dean became suspicious, Gadreel– he locked me away inside my mind, and used my body to kill innocent people,” Sam tears his gaze away from mine and brings his hand back into his lap. “It’s good that you left. You and Corie, you– you wouldn’t have been safe if you stayed.”
Sam spends the better part of the next hour filling me in on everything that happened since we’d last seen each other. I don’t know how to tell Sam about Sammy, and for a brief moment, I consider letting him think that Sammy isn’t his, but quickly decide against it. Sam's face lights up when I tell him, and tears fill his eyes as I pull out my phone to show him the trove of photos of Sammy and Cordy. If Sam was truly out, then I had to give him the chance to be a part of our lives, didn’t I? Cordy and Sammy deserve the chance to know Sam, the Sam I fell in love with.
It’s late by the time I return, and I do everything I can to act as if everything is normal. Cordy, Sammy, and Jason are curled up on the couch, watching a movie, and I greet them quickly before heading upstairs. Cordy calls out for me to join them, causing Jason to turn around and take in my appearance. I tell her I’ll be back down after a shower, and I see Jason getting up out of the corner of my eye.
I don’t realize that Jason is behind me until I hear the door closing only moments after walking into my room.
"I think we should talk," He murmurs, closing the gap between us. I fiddle with the ring on my finger and move towards the bed, taking a seat on the edge. "About us, the kids; about Sam," I nod, and my eyes stay fixated on the ring on my finger. “Whatever happened today, just- just don’t lie, Y/N, please, no matter how difficult the truth is.”
“Okay,” I nod again, and Jason places a kiss on my temple.
“You told me that Sam disappeared,” Jason moves down so that our eyes can meet. “Did you know that he was going to show up here today?”
The topic of Sam was a difficult one for me to breach with Jason. He’s never pushed me for more information than what I am willing to give him. When we first started dating, Sammy was only a few months old. I had finally come to terms with the fact that Sam was most likely dead or worse. Radio silence from Dean seemingly confirmed my suspicions, and I allowed myself to move on, to fall in love again. My feelings for Sam never disappeared, they stayed deep inside me, and when I saw him again, they all came rushing to the surface.
"No," I answer honestly. "The last time I saw Sam, he was in a coma. His brother and I couldn’t agree on what to do. Dean wanted to use,” I hesitate, “extreme measures, I had just found out I was pregnant with Sammy, and I couldn’t–” I don’t know how to explain it to Jason; how I seemingly took Cordy and ran away. I try to find something that resembles the truth. “He was dying, I wanted him to get better, but I couldn’t watch him become an empty shell of himself. Dean had medical power of attorney, and I had no chance of winning any contestation. Legally, Sam’s not Cordy’s dad; there was nothing I could do. Cordy and I said goodbye, and we left. I thought he died since we didn’t hear from either of them again.”
Jason listens carefully and takes a deep breath before speaking again. Whatever it is, I can tell it's going to be difficult. “Did anything happen while you were with him?"
I’m caught off-guard by the question, and guilt begins to fill every inch of my body. I look away from Jason and catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. My hair is mussed, and my lips are still swollen; it couldn’t be any more obvious what happened. Jason is studying me when I face him again, and tears fill my eyes. I don’t want to admit what Sam and I did less than two hours ago.
“Jason, please," I beg, my shame taking over. “I can’t.”
"Please, Y/N," he demands softly, and a choked sob leaves me. “Did you kiss him?” I nod my head and Jason tenses. I glance up and see a mixture of anger and sadness at my confession, which only makes me cry harder.
“Did you–” Jason struggles to get the words out, and I fear I know exactly what his next question will be. “Did you sleep with him?”
"I'm sorry!" I cry, and Jason moves away from me at my confession. He paces the floor in front of me, face growing redder by the second, his jaw clenches, and I see him ball his fists. “I didn’t– I wasn’t– It just happened.”
"It just happened?" Jason stops in his tracks, questioning me in disbelief. "You don't accidentally sleep with someone who isn't your fiancé, Y/N!"
“I- I know,” I sob, barely able to choke out the words. “It all hap-happened so fast," I try to explain myself. “One minute we were talking and the next Sam was kissing me and then…”
"I don't need the details, Y/N," Jason snaps. "Just tell me, why?"
"I don't know. I wasn't thinking. I needed closure; we've never been able to give each other a proper goodbye."
"And sleeping with him got you that?!" He asks in a hushed yell. If the kids weren't downstairs, we'd be in a screaming match right now. "A proper goodbye? So does that mean Sam's leaving? That he’s going to give you and Cordy and Sammy up? Disappear from our lives forever?"
"I-I don't know," I say between sniffs.
Jason storms out of the room, leaving me alone with my guilt. Jason had been there for Sammy’s birth, holding my hand the entire time. He stepped into the role of step-father when he could’ve walked away. Jason is the only father Sammy has ever known; Cordy took longer to warm up to him, still holding out hope that Sam would be a part of our lives again one day. Jason and I discussed him adopting both Cordy and Sammy after we were married, but now that Sam is back, I’m questioning everything.
When Jason returns half an hour later, he’s calmer than before, but I can still see the anger written on his face. He didn’t deserve what Sam and I did to him, and I wouldn’t blame him for leaving me—us. I watch closely as he walks over to the bed and sits down next to me.
“Are you still in love with Sam?” Jason hesitantly asks and takes my hand in his, his thumb grazing over the ring. “Do you want to be with him?”
“He’s Cordy and Sammy’s dad; a part of me will always love him.”
“That’s not what I asked, Y/N,” Jason gently grabs my chin and turns my face towards him. “Are you in love with Sam?” He asks more pointedly.
“I– I don’t know,” I murmur.
“Y/N,” he sighs, “I love you, and if you tell me this won’t ever happen again, I am ready to find a way for us to work through it. But you have to decide what you want, who you want: Sam, or me.”
I let his words sink in, wondering if the situations were reversed if I would be able to do the same. I can’t tell him something like that will never happen again because I don’t know if I can ever trust myself to not fall back into Sam’s arms. Sam was all I ever wanted for ten years, but I had to put my feelings for him aside so that I could focus on Cordy and Sammy; I have to do what’s best for them.
“I’m going to stay at my house tonight.” Jason’s voice pulls me from my thoughts. “Think about what I’ve said.” He leans down and places a kiss on my forehead.
“Jason,” I reach for his hand, “I never meant to hurt you.”
He smiles sadly, then leaves. I hear him say goodbye to Cordy and Sammy. The silence that follows when the front door closes breaks my heart. A few minutes later, Cordy carries Sammy into my room, and they both crawl into my bed. She’s old enough to understand that something happened between Jason and me. I don’t know if I should tell her of Sam’s return and decide against it. I’m not ready to answer the questions that will inevitably follow. The three of us fall asleep together; Sammy sandwiched between Cordy and me.
When I wake up the next morning, I know what I want. I know who I want. He was the last thing to cross my mind before I fell asleep and the first thing I thought of when I woke up.
I reach for my phone and send him a message asking him to come over as soon as possible. He replies quickly, telling me he will be over shortly. I put the phone down and turn to wake Cordy and Sammy. She grumbles, but I give her a little nudge and ask her to wait downstairs. Cordy sends me a questioning look through her sleepy features, but she complies when I tell her it’s important.
Cordy’s still half-asleep on the couch when I make my way down, Sammy propped on my hip, also unable to keep his eyes open. My whole body is shaking with nerves as I impatiently wait for him to arrive.
Three light raps on the door have me on my feet in seconds, racing towards the future with the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. I swing the door open, letting him step into the house, and he wraps his arms around Sammy and me, holding onto us as tight as he can. I relax into his embrace and breathe in his familiar scent.
As I pull away, I let my eyes fall on his familiar features. I run my free hand through his hair, and a smile appears on his lips. He leans down to press a gentle yet eager kiss on my lips. His rough, calloused fingers tenderly brush against Sammy’s face, and tears fill his eyes as he takes in the little boy’s features. I hand Sammy over to him and notice how small the toddler looks wrapped in his arms. He closes his eyes in an attempt to keep the tears at bay, but when he opens them again, I see the kaleidoscope of blues and greens that I had fallen in love with all those years ago.
“Cordy,” I call into the living room, “come here, please.”
I can hear the padding of Cordy’s feet as she mumbles about it being too early to be up. When she turns the corner, Cordy’s eyes widen, and a broad smile spreads across her face. She runs towards us, ready to jump into his arms.
"Dad!"
