the summer i turned pretty 2x06 review -- no, i swear, tho, conrad was just sad...

Episode 6, the episode anons have wanted me to watch.

I like how Belly could've just said "We should throw a party" but because we're supposed to understand the closeness of these families through dialogue alone she has to say it in a roundabout way so she can talk about a memory of her mom and Susannah that Conrad and Jeremiah should already know if it's like they all grew up together 3 months out of the year.

This zen conversation with Steven and Conrad is legit like the first real conversation I've witnessed on this show.

This volleyball conversation is so forced.

I think I got a few requests to do a vid to this song and I remember just not getting over "is it chill that you're in my head?" because I thought it sounded like when you go to the thesaurus and look up synonyms for "cool".

Conrad asserting his dominance after Belly got Jeremiah a drink but not him one by drinking from Belly's straw is actually pretty funny though. It would be better if Belly wasn't so ... herself.

I love that Skye and Cam Cameron are the ship I care about the most (and I'm using the word 'care' SO loosely).

"The sacred emergency Amex??" It went back to being phony.

I can't deal with more Taylor and Steven.

And she'll put the boa around him because this show loves cliches.

Girl, you can shrug and shake your head all you want, it doesn't compensate for a lack of emotion in your face or voice.

And he's blinking trying to find his well of emotion and that shit is dry, my friend.

It's not like he was kissing Aubrey, it's not even like they were hugging, he had his head in her lap and you can say "teenager" all you want but this is ridiculous.

This is also the closest they've come to executing what they want with these two and it's still not done well but when he says "Aubrey was just the one who found me I wish it was you" I can at least say I believe that.

So I'm guessing she's supposed to have this cosmic, soulful, reach into each other's soul connection with Conrad and a fun, chemistry-filled familiarity with Jeremiah. I've just seen both things done properly so this is just very big shrug.

I was going to say something about the 'how to kiss' conversation but then I was like, lol there are too many youths on my blog. So, moving on.

"I always hated when Mom made us take these pictures but it's like she knew we'd want them later" yes, Jeremiah, that's the purpose of a picture. He would annoy me less if they stopped giving him asinine lines.

she's saying the same thing twice. That's just called moving on. What it should be is "mourning your past and moving on in the present" or "remembering your past and moving on in the present" or "celebrating your past and moving on in the present" or "appreciating your past and moving on in the present". WHO. WROTE. THIS.

So Jere is Dean and Conrad is Jess, which anon essentially told me. Except Conrad is nowhere near as bad as Jess. He is just a boy who's been sad. LMAO.

OK so I'm really on neither side here because I don't care but there is a bit of a difference between Conrad telling Jere to suck it up and let him be with Belly, which was insensitive, and Jeremiah about to make out with his brother's ex girlfriend in public.

"When things aren't perfect instead of trying to fix it, he decides to throw it away" but we literally never see him do that?? Like he leaves Brown to go to the house to stop the sale, he's like Liam or whoever, he got a judge to let him access the trust, let's do that. Jeremiah did you think of anything you could do to help save this house except bring flowers to Julia, which failed, or did you just go let's not give up every time reality hit? Because even the "let's get Syke on our side" plan was Belly's? Idk dude, you're talking a big game for a character who I've seen be effectively useless??

"When shit got tough, he couldn't handle it and he dropped you", he literally said he couldn't go to back to the prom and Belly was like LET'S BREAK UP THEN and then he tried to be like wait that's not what I mean and Belly refused to listen?

I ... WHAT?

See, this isn't a blowup. This is a very contained, very quiet fight and this is when it's supposed to be a dirty OH SHIT fight. We should get a version of this, GET IN HIS FACE JERE

don't be afraid to have a fight! Not to mention I can't believe this fight because like 98% of the things he's accusing Conrad of, I don't think Conrad actually did, that would make him too much an active character. He is literally just a guy who's been sad.

And I know they hinted that Jeremiah has to deal with stuff because he was putting together Susannah's receipts or whatever but this is when juxtaposition would work where we see him see her wither away, we see him give her ice chips, we see him take care of her and Conrad is with Belly or at school.

Belly, why are YOU drunk? omg, at least Marissa's drama was FUN.

"I'm not leaving you, Belly." "But you already did!" I mean DID HE? And he also explained WHAT happened with Aubrey?

Someone said Conrad is like a ticking time bomb but what happens when he explodes because I haven't seen it. I've just seen him be sad.

And ALSO THIS SHOULD HAVE THIS KIND OF ENERGY

If they really wanted me to believe that Conrad was slipping away little by little throughout their relationship then they can't just leave that up to prom and a voiceover. I needed to see him actively shut her out, I needed to see her actively try to talk to him and him refusing to let her in. I needed to see him be Jess. Otherwise, this is RIDICULOUS.

Oh good, you know what I needed now? Another Taylor Swift song.

And then Belly turns around and kisses/chooses Jeremiah after this? BRO. WHY DO EITHER OF YOU LIKE HER?

Meanwhile back on Earth.

- So, we're just going to live like this, until they come back? - Crowley asked.

- Looks like it - Nina answered - I'm just worried about our shops.

- I think you'll be fiiine - Crowley said reassuringly with an accent on the last word.

- It's uncanny how much you play him so well already.

- Oh. Thanks - he smiled.

- I don't know. You don't look very grumpy - Maggie said, focusing in on him.

- Oh, just let me do some customer service and I'll get there. God, I can't even look at coffees right now! Yuck.

- I feel you - Nina replied.

- I'm... I'm not sure if I get how you act like - said Maggie in fear of getting caught - Can I hang out with you maybe, to get into character more?

Crowley and Nina looked together.

Minutes later all three of them were in the coffee shop, working.

- Are you sure it's fine? - Nina asked.

- Yeah of course, you just put on the service uniform, and nobody's going to care if you don't have a contract working here. You just won't get paid! - Crowley finished with a smile.

- You're enjoying this, aren't you? - Nina asked looking at him disappointedly.

- A bit.

The day was very hectic, and rough for them. But Crowley enjoyed that he now had 2 angelic helpers. It was good to spend time with Nina. And teaching Maggie how to act like a human was simultaneously funny and rewarding. Kind of felt like taking care of a big child.

At the end of the day, Nina, and Maggie were exhausted, Crowley was happily walking with them.

- Ahh! Easiest work day of my life!

- Easiest?! - Nina exclaimed in shock.

- We should do this more often!

- I feel like I need to put my head into cold ice, and just forget about everything that happened today - said Maggie with pain in her voice - they were all so mean! I don't understand.

- Hmm... Yes, that's bound to happen at your first time - Crowley hissed out - Better get used to it, by the time Aziraphael and Muriel get back, you will be the greatest human impersonator!

- Hm... That sounds worthwhile.

- There you go then.

As they were walking, something caught Crowley's attention. The Bentley. It was still in the same place where they left it after the four of them talked. He knew that Muriel loved it very much. The others stopped in their tracks too.

- I cannot place it why - Crowley had started - but somehow I feel sorry for that car.

Nina stepped a bit forward.

- I think it's best to leave it untouched. Their owner isn't here right now.

- Yeah... Yeah.

- So where do we go now? - asked Maggie.

- To home...? Where do you usually go?

- Oh I just walk around the city. I've been only here for a little while, only seen the Sun disappear for like 3 times. Hehe.... It's a bit... Scary.

Crowley looked at them, and gave out a sigh.

- Okay, I think, we should stay over at Nina's house tonight, if it's alright of course.

- S-sure! - Nina hesitated - but why?

- I'm not leaving my body alone with you unsupervised, and Maggie here needs to stay off the streets at least for the nights! - he made a good point, even his head bopped at it.

- Oh my I always wanted to do sleepovers!! - Nina yelled out in joy.

- Yeey! - Maggie clapped - What is sleep?

- This is going to be hard, won't it? - Nina asked rhetorically.

Crowley continued.

- Let's just remember the rules, that... You know who gave us.

- Mhmhm.

- No talking about who we are. No miracles. And absolutely blending in with Crowley's perspective for myself. To make a believable story for outsiders.

- So what is it then? - Nina asked - he got depressed after all that evil coffee business, and he decided to move in with me and Maggie to cope?

- ...MmmYeah?

- I wish I understood anything from that - Maggie said with a sad smile on her.

- You will, dont worry - Crowley reassured her and gave her a cruel wink - on the second day.

- Is it good?

- Depression? Sureee! Look, let's just get to Nina's place, so we can finally start our after work hours to relax.

- Okay, I like that word! I know it. Heh... - Maggie was starting to feel downbeat, but Crowley cheered her up with a pat on the back.

Their night went well. They were together, but somehow with different bodies, it didn't feel so exciting. Especially for Crowley seeing himself out of his body. Same for Nina with Maggie. It wasn't much of a turn on, but it was rather not needed at the moment. They figured talking about their lives, was a good choice for Maggie too. Then somebody brought up boardgames and since then there was no stop to it with Maggie. She thought this was the best night of her life, and even if working in the daytime like today would continue, it was worth it if these "girly nights" went on.

Meanwhile in Heaven, it wasn't long after Aziraphael and Muriel parted ways, and Muriel was onto leaving to the stars. At least she could finally visit the Nebula.

She was happy, in love, but also determined. Giving bravery has worked for both of them as it seemed.

Soon, she got close enough to her recommendation to the two of them, and heard they were indeed there. She gave it a thought, and found it better to dismantle her cloak for a moment. It would only change for her.

He shouted out right after.

- Gabriel!

He looked around in one place, if he can spot them somewhere. Until he popped up right behind him.

- Hello!

- AAAA!.... Stop. Doing that!

- Should I make a noise when I move around?

- No... Where's Beelzebub? I need both of you.

- What is it, traitor?

- You're one to speak.

- What can I say, the name stuck.

- Lovely. Khm. Listen...

- ...Well?

- You really took on my advice of the Nebula. Wow.

- You created the best stars! - Gabriel gave him two gentle fist bumps at his shoulder - of course we'd take your advise on them! Very good choice indeed.

Gabriel lifted his arms, like he was doing a little bow, taking the compliment.

- Now that you left, Metatron took Aziraphale away to take over your abandoned position and finish the job for you.

- ...What?! He- heh, he can't do that! He's not even in a soldier shape! He's way too soft to take on any of those tasks. Wasn't he the one who ruined the world ending plan? Why would he do that now?

- Because Metatron has manipulated him into such a tight grip that he either complies or dies! - Crowley hissed out - And they gonna keep filling in new angels to your abandoned post until they find someone who will start it! So how about you own up to your mistakes and help us out for once, to stop this angel demon war for good?!

- ...Fine. But what can I do?

- We need someone to alert and gather the other angels, for a distraction so big, even Metatron gets lost into it! We need to get Aziraphale to talk with God personally.

- So... You want me to do a Lucifer 2.0?

- ...Kind of...?

Beelzebub cut in too.

- Hmm... Maybe we can help you with that.

- You can? - Crowley sounded surprised.

- Well, I would help him, definetely. I try to come up with something with the demons.

Gabriel looked at her, confused.

- Will you really?

- Of course! I LOVE getting into mischief, my flies definetely would like to scare some angels and cover that whole sterile place in. Damn, I want to do it just by thinking of it now.

- Alright then! So Crowley, let's talk about the plan.

- Uh.... Uhm. Okay! - he was surprised that this worked out so well. He didn't have any words, he never thought he'd get this far - Any recommendations, Gabriel? You're better at planning!

Crowley grinned.

I bet the the comment you saw of the person who liked the episode was a hardcore Beth stan, who worships her ground. And I personally want to like Beth, but I think the writers are making it just really hard to like her atm. And I am just so done with her still wanting to sleep with Dean, I kind of miss season one, where she was just hating on him. I don't even understand the purpose of her being back with him again, I mean she willingly sleeps with him, what are the writers thinking?

i just wanna make clear that i made that post because i’m tired and bitter about the show, not to make fun of that specific person. but yeah they are a really big fan of beth. but tbh so am i. if i stan anyone on this show it’s beth 😂😂

i completely understand you having a hard time liking her. i love her but some of her decisions have really frustrated me (having her decide to rob rio and try to kill him this episode was truly… A Choice™️), especially the not leaving dean one. and god, me too, anon, i miss s1 so much!!! remember when she asked for a divorce? what a beautiful moment 😭💜

i can’t pretend to understand the writers or know why they’ve decided to do this. i tried to believe in s2 that it was building to something. and then we got them signing the divorce papers - i hated the way it happened, because dean was the one who got to make that choice, but still, it was happening!! - and just never filling them with a lawyer or courthouse or whatever (i’m not divorced, idk how you do it 😂).

i can honestly say i could understand why she wouldn’t divorce him - first because he was lying about having cancer, then because he got shot, then because she needed him to play nice, then because they didn’t have enough money and she was traumatised. but i can’t understand them not being separated. i have to admit i find this particularly unforgiveable because of my own parents’ relationship - i think telling your kids you’re going to separate and then not doing it is one of the worst decisions you can make as a parent. it’s confusing for your kids and leaves them reeling when you get back together and then separate, over and over again - there’s no stability. and since she’s always talking about how she’s a mother, i’d think she’d consider this. but apparently not. if they’d been married but separated and they had explained this to the kids, i’d be more ok with it. but that’s clearly not what happened. i guess i can also understand them having sex in 3x03, in the context of the particular brand of ridiculous that was that storyline, but her seducing him in 3x07? it makes no sense. he almost got her killed in 3x05. he did get someone else killed (she’s not without fault here, of course, but the point here is that neither is he). plus, i think we can extrapolate from 1x05, 2x06 and 3x03 that she doesn’t actually enjoy having sex with him?? why would she want to have sex with him now?? what makes her think that he’s going to changeafter years and years of showing her he has absolutely no respect for her outside of her role as his good little wifey? what makes her attracted to him?? i don’t get it

from the point of view of the writers and the actors, i guess it’s a very long relationship, with a lot of history, and it probably gives them a lot to explore?? but, i mean, the girls also have a lot of history, so if you wanna explore that, you can just give us more backstory for them. or if you really wanna explore specifically the hurt that comes with a romantic relationship that long - divorces are brutal!! have them get one, they could fight and cry and reminisce or whatever, if that’s what they wanted - no need for them to still be in a relationship for them to explore those things. another thing is that dean serves as a way to forward the plot and as comedic relief a lot (i think?? am i using these words right? 😂), so i also understand wanting to keep him around for that, even though i don’t like it. but i don’t see why he couldn’t be kept around only as beth’s co-parent?? he could be just as much of an idiot and make just as many dumb choices that forward the plotas her estranged husband?? the best example i can think of is that everything that happened in 2x07 could’ve happened with dean and beth divorced. absolutely nothing had to be changed, except for him living there.

so i guess my answer to your question is i have no fucking idea what they’re thinking. 😂😂

RNM 2x07 - Como La Flor

Apologies for being so late this week!! Lots of translating to do, and research. Mucho gracias to @queenrikki for reviewing this one for me!

EPISODE SUMMARY:

OLD WOUNDS — Liz (Jeanine Mason) is forced to revisit a painful part of her past when her mother Helena (guest star Bertila Damas) shows up at the diner unexpectedly. Michael (Michael Vlamis) urges Maria (Heather Hemmens) to seek help after she experiences a strange vision, and Kyle’s (Michael Trevino) attempt to get Steph (guest star Justina Adorno) to open up doesn’t go as planned. Finally, Helena’s arrival in Roswell sends Rosa spiraling. Nathan Dean and Lily Cowles also star. Barbara Brown directed the episode written by Danny Tolli & Carolina Rivera (#207). Original airdate 4/27/2020. 

DETAILS:

Max and Isobel both describing to Rosa how it feels to use (and control) your powers.

Isobel:

"Ground your intention.  Feel the current running through your body, your hands guiding it with purpose."

Max:

"Okay, draw energy from your spine…"

Arturo on Rosa:

"I heard a little mouse crying in her room this morning."

Escamoles - like Liz says in the episode, they're ant larvae. One article I found called them "the Caviar of the Mexican desert". 

Helena calls Liz "mi corazón", which means "my heart".

"Arturito, te ves bien."

Arturo, you look good.

Adding "ito" to someone's name in Spanish can both be positive or negative.  It can refer to smallness or also tenderness (like an affectionate pet name).

@tasyfa pointed out that there was a little timeline error in this scene.  Arturo says that he hasn't seen Helena in 7 years, since Jim Valenti's funeral, but last season it was established in 1x12 that Valenti died in 2014.  Also, remember the show is a year behind reality right now, so it's still 2019. So off by 2 years.

The reason for Helena's visit - transferring her ownership of the Crashdown for Liz so that Liz can sponsor Arturo's residency for citizenship. I did a lot of research trying to understand and clarify why this is.  Thanks to those who weighed in when I was struggling to find a clear answer. Eventually I reached out to Define American, the non-profit org that provides support to the show on racial and immigration related issues.  Here's the response:

The short version is that Liz has to meet minimum income requirements in order to sponsor Arturo, because she has to be able to certify that she can financially support him.  Since she's currently unemployed except for the Crashdown, transferring half of the ownership to her makes her a business partner and helps her to meet the income requirements. 

The Spanish:

"¿Cuánto quieres, Mamá?" 

How much do you want, Mama?

"She has a very thoughtful manicure."

Narrative thread about Max's nightmare/memory continues from 2x03 and 2x06.  Don't forget that 2x03 was just Isobel remembering it. Max was a hallucination. So when he brings it up here, it might be something they haven't discussed in a very long time.

The Spanish from Rosa on her red jacket:

"Eres una mujercita."

Basically translates to you're a little woman or young woman.  I assume the "cita" is supposed to be diminutive here.

"Mom is an opportunist.  If she found out she had a kid who came back from the dead she would use you to get to Anderson Cooper. And then she'd use him to promote her latest lounge singer gig."

"Isobel pays double.  Becky tax." 

A Becky, according to common colloquial use, is an annoying white woman, usually entitled and privileged.

Lead bartender quit..meaning there's a job opening at the Pony…hmm. Wonder if any of our characters need a job... 🤔

Maria's vision:

Michael drops the change

Flash to Kyle dropping his keys & bending down to pick them up.

Kyle staring into a bright light.

Maria shouting his name.

"My heart was broken.  Liz ended things and a part of me died."

Max's story to Valenti… not all THAT far off from the truth.

Note: has anyone told him about Valenti investigating him? We know Liz and Isobel were questioned.  Michael was present when Liz was questioned. Kyle knows the whole theory his mom was pursuing. And he just wanders in there like nothing happened?

"Try leading several short staffed investigations with the mayor breathing down your neck."

Another subtle reference to the mayor, including the election banners hung around town in S2 and his "anti-immigrant agenda" which was referenced in S1.

Max has been with the department since he was 18 - this is the first time we learned that.  In 2x05 we learned he was there at 21. So that timeline has now been further clarified. Which also means he was hired during Jim Valenti's time as Sheriff.

"I need eyes on you at all times now."

Definitely implies a lack of trust, or possibly still wanting to keep an eye on him for the purpose of her investigation (not a fact, just a theory).

Steph tells Kyle that she's always hanging around the hospital because she's doing admin work for her dad.

"I'm starting to feel like you're a ghost who only I can see."

"Ask them if they can see me. Or if you were just talking to a ghost." 

Note that ghosts have been a running theme this season with Rosa returning from the dead. This seems to be in line with that. Or are they subtly tying Steph to Rosa (I'm grasping at straws here, probably).

Liz leaves the safe on 3...but before she changes it is on 81. Helena leaves it on 78 after stealing the ring. Good continuity, RNM!

The whole "my mom hates cops" theme is a little confusing to me.  I mean, it makes sense given what we know about Helena. Except that she had an affair with Jim Valenti, who was… a cop. And also an addict.  Maybe it was different because they rehabbed together (just an assumption, not a fact). Or maybe the Jim experience contributed to her dislike of cops.

Liz...might be grasping at straws when she refers to police work as "something you love" to Max.  He didn't exactly seem enamoured by the job when we first met him in Season 1.

First time we learn Max and Isobel's father's name. And it is… Dave. 🤔

The Spanish Helena uses when she meets Max:

"Pero que guapo estas."

But how handsome you are.

"Cuidado Arturito."

Careful, Arturo…

Helena found Liz and Diego's wedding registry online. 

“Look there are medical reasons for non-drug-induced hallucinations - epilepsy, schizophrenia…”

“My mom has a degenerative brain disease. My grandma did too. I've always known I'd be next.”

Helena wanted to be Selena.

Which fits with Liz's lounge singer comment earlier.

And the "drunkenly singing in the car with your daughters in the backseat" fits with the story Liz and Rosa discussed in 2x02 about the car accident they got into as kids with Helena driving drunk.

Helena shows Liz her ten years sober chip, suggesting that she's been sober since Rosa died, but Rosa finds pills in Helena's car later in the episode.  Oxycodone. The same drug that Rosa used to steal from her mom as a kid (which we learned about in 2x04) and the same drug that she and Kyle discussed when he was checking her health in 2x01.

Rosa Linda… still not sure personally if this is a continuity error or a pet name.  I’m inclined to go with a pet name. Throughout the whole episode Helena uses lots of pet names, nicknames, diminutives to address people. Rosa Linda may be just another version of this since Rosa's middle name was pretty well established as Helena in Season 1 between her grave, memorial pamphlet, etc.

Kyle calls attention to Steph's bandage on her arm.  She says she gave blood, but it feels like she's evading.

Also she calls him McDreamy, which is a Grey's Anatomy reference. Kyle called himself McSexy (another Grey's nickname) in 1x08 as well.

Note: I've seen some people talk about the speech about his sick friend as being about Maria, but I think he's really talking about Steph.  Or both, vaguely. He's certainly trying to get Steph to open up to him. Here's what he says:

"I just found out a friend of mine is sick. And I can't do anything to help her. And I hate feeling helpless."

Only after Steph puts her walls back up, does he gesture to Mimi's files.

The Spanish:

"She was always kind of out there.  By the time I realized it was more than that, I just became obsessed with money. Wanted to be able to take care of her. I invested everything Grandma Patty left me, and I worked, scrounged.  It was about three days after my mom was finally fired from her job at the Pony, I bought the place."

Maria's blood does not contain the alien protein that Kyle found in the Pod Squad and Rosa after being in the Pod for a decade. (and yes, he actually said Pod Squad, which feels like an OG fandom victory)

"Look, there is one thing I noticed in your grandmother's file. Her insurance company is the same one that paid for my dad's cancer treatments...My dad got cancer because of an alien incident at Caulfield Prison. A fake insurance company established by Project Shepherd covered his bills."

"Okay so my grandmother got sick at the same alien prison where your mother died?"

Quinces is just slang for Quinceanera.

Just in case you're not familiar with quinceaneras (Liz's was also referenced in 1x02).

Regarding the power outage.  Liz thought it was Max. Max thought it was Rosa. But the wire is frayed, like it was cut or chewed through. So it wasn't alien power related.  When Arturo finds the wire though, he says, "Must have been a little mouse." Which is how he referred to Rosa earlier in the episode. So the question is, does he actually think it was a mouse? Or does he think Rosa cut the wire? And if Rosa did cut the wire, then why? To distract them while she goes after her mom's car?

In the big Liz/Helena argument, Helena calls Max “a güerito cop”.  Güero means white person, similar to the more commonly used gringo.  But by adding the “ito” onto the end (like discussed before), Helena is basically diminuitizing Max.  She’s using the “smallness” above to basically imply that he’s some white nobody.

“I may not be the PTA mom who made cookies for bake sales or hosted sleepovers, but I sacrificed everything to come to this country to give you a better life.”

This is...not actually true.  Liz and Rosa are both natural born U.S. citizens, born in Roswell.  So she didn’t “come to this country” for that reason. She was already here when Liz and Rosa came into the picture.  And it’s not like she came pregnant with Rosa or anything, since Rosa is Jim Valenti’s daughter.

The ring that Helena took was ARTURO'S mother's ring.  It wasn't even Helena's family's heirloom.   

Liz and Arturo sharing flan for dessert.  At the start of the episode before Helena arrived they discussed making flan for Rosa.

Arturo admits that he always knew the truth about Rosa's heritage. (*fistpump* that's one of my headcanons coming true). 

"Rosa es mi hija, siempre y para toda la vida."

Rosa is my daughter, always and for life.

"Maybe you're right. I am playing the hero. Just like you're playing the politician's perfect arm candy.  See, I did a little digging. And your boyfriend, Dirk-- he ran for city council. It's very impressive. But there's no mention of your daughters. I'm guessing Dirk doesn't even know about Liz or Rosa.  Does he know anything about you, Helena? 'Cause it would be such a shame if he found out about a little town called Roswell."

Helena gives Max the ring, but keeps the box… maybe that's what Helena really wanted?

Huevos = eggs.  Basically, slang for balls.

"I know that face.  You uncovered a massive conspiracy."

"I checked the Caulfield drives. No sign of a Patricia DeLuca, but there was a Patricia Harris. Her maiden name. She signed up to participate in an experimental trial. Government was interested in weaponizing alien abilities. They wanted to create super soldiers. Your grandma was one of the first human subjects."

"Kind of wish I was an alien instead."

"What happened to the experiment?"

"It was a total failure. Caulfield shut it down in the '70s after people started dying. I don't understand how your grandmother got involved."

"I do. Henrietta Lacks, Tuskegee, Holmesburg.  The DeLucas aren't the first black people to be secretly experimented on."

Highly encourage you to read these if you're unfamiliar with any of these references.  It's African-American history (and really a black mark on U.S. history) that's rarely taught in schools.

Kyle rips his jacket, staggers out to the parking lot, drops his keys, and is almost hit by a car, but Michael throws him out of the way with his powers (and Kyle still ends up injured because he lands on a glass bottle).

"Now that we know your illness is related to Caulfield we can find a cure for it."

"Maybe it's not an illness. I saw the future today, Guerin. When I first found out Grandma Patty was experimented on, I was furious.  But what if my genetic inheritance isn't just injustice? It's also actual superpowers. Saved a life today. And not just any life-- Kyle Valenti's. Tomorrow he's gonna turn around and save five more lives."

Liz and Rosa's dueling big sister act is super fascinating.  Rosa admits that she wasn't going to burn the car, and then she saw Liz crying, felt helpless, and that's when her powers went all wacky and caused it to explode.

Meanwhile, Liz has spent the whole episode trying to keep Rosa safe from Helena, and is trying to comfort her here by talking about Helena's sobriety.

But--Rosa stole Helena's pills, so she knows Helena is not sober, and she doesn't tell Liz that.  Why? To protect her.

At some point these two should probably stop keeping secrets to protect each other and start actually sharing what they know.

Kyle stitches himself up.

Steph quoted in this scene:

Cameron's car was impounded a couple hours away.

Max is turning in his badge and gun and is turning down desk duty to search for Cam.

Isobel and Michael's discussion at the Pony:

"Do you think that Noah chose me because I was already broken?"

"I think you are the only one of us who ever keeps it together."

"I'm serious, Michael. The night that drifter attacked me, why am I the only one who started blacking out? I mean, Max literally murdered a man, but I'm the one who breaks?"

"You were traumatized. We were kids. At that age, trauma gets etched on to your soul."

"But what if it's not in my soul? What if it's in my DNA? Look, my whole life, I've played Stepford wife, because I thought that's what I was supposed to do. But...I need to understand myself now. I need to know where I'm from.  And if I don't know who my biological parents are, how am I ever gonna know who I really am?" 

"What are you saying, Iz?"

"I know that we said we shouldn't look into the past, but…"

"It keeps pulling you back. Me too. I spent my whole life thinking I'd build a ship and blast off into the ether. And then the minute I decide to leave that all behind and focus on this good thing in front of me, I'm sucked back in. Maria's family was experimented on at Caulfield. I need to find out more so I can find a cure for her illness."

Rosa takes one of her mom's pills. 😭

SaL anon here to join you in the salt mine for a bit (even though I mostly liked the episode). First, I'm choosing to interpret that dream girl line as Alex mocking Greg because Greg said that about Maria at some point, the delivery and reception of it were kinda weird if its to be taken straight. But it still means Alex, along with everyone else, propping up Maria when she's literally been snarky and bitchy to every person she's interacted with so far (This time it was Isobel for no reason) TBC

I don't understand, after Jeanine and Chris just did an interview about how all the characters will grow and acknowledge their past mistakes, after no less than 5 mains got called out for their behavior (more on that later as good stuff), how the writers can continue to have her character be like this. Continuing to tell us how great Maria is while showing the opposite is pretty much guaranteeing she will be despised , why would they choose to do this?

I honestly do not know and I absolutely cannot with this BS right now. Even IF it was something Greg said about her before, if that's the route we were going to go, we should have had hints and stuff along the way. And yeah we all know c*rina didn't plan out backstories so her having the forethought to put relationship threads along the way is laughable, but with the new people taking over, we could have gotten Isobel and Greg (even if it was just a fun, breezy, non-serious good time) because we DID have clues that he had heart eyes for her and even a decade later remembered something she did. But the fact that we've gone 28 episodes without even so much as a HINT that Greg cares one iota for m*ria and now Alex is saying he's been waiting for this for over 10 years?! Really?! So we're retconning Greg's concern for Alex last season into being him wanting to know if Michael and m*ria were together or if he had a shot? So Greg wanting to stand up for Alex more is being retconned into him wanting to push Michael and Alex together to clear the way so he could have m*ria?

ALSO!! If they are still trying to push the idea that Alex worships the ground m*ria walks on and would want to marry her if only he wasn't gay and that 2x06 was such a loving experience, Alex isn't having ANY feelings about her being with his brother instead?! Like???!!! I'm am so disgusted with this plot for a lot of reasons but also it makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE from ANY direction!!

And YES, the fact that they have stated they are focusing on characters having consequences for their actions and did SO good with Liz and Max and people calling them out on their shit, but we are still being forced to watch Alex worship at m*ria's feet and proclaim her praises because SHE can't actually do anything wrong ever or have a single consequence for anything like being rude to Michael for no reason, and not caring if she killed Max as long as she could get another glimpse of her vision. Everyone is banging on about how great it was we finally got a Liz/m*ria friendship scene and ALL I can think about is, did anyone tell Liz what she did? That she was willing to risk Max's failing heart and his life when she could have just asked someone to take her drifting or, ya know, hopped on that mechanical bull for an adrenaline rush?

I'm just SO frustrated with the double standard for her and the fact that even after everything last season that they are SO utterly unwilling to address that issue because??? Why? It's important for Liz's character to be human and have flaws and learn from them, so is m*ria's character so unimportant and such a background plot device that they can't be bothered to even try? What is the reason?
