The Pillars with Pets; Part 2 of the Modern AU

:D __ Mitsuri -so Mitsuri actually wanted a dog of her own so bad and took the first opportunity to get one -she adopted her bab from a shelter -originally, she was thinking more along the lines of a small, floofy dog -like a Pomeranian, maybe, or a poodle -but -b u t -look. The huge, ambiguously mixed dog was. Right there. And she had such big, sweet eyes. -‘twas love at first sight -Aki-chan is an older dog and has a limp, but she shares her owner’s zest for life -together, they’re so full of energy that it’s downright terrifying -but in the best possible way! -Aki-chan gives the best slobbery kisses. Aki-chan is always there to wake Mitsuri up with happy barking in the morning. They cuddle together at night. -Aki-chan is an absolute sweetheart but considering her sheer size, she acts as a very effective deterrent for folks who are just plain Not Nice to Mitsuri -it’s like…the dog has a sixth sense for when her owner is uncomfortable or sad -Mitsuri likes to knit sweaters for Aki in the wintertime -they don’t always fit quite right but it’s fun! -also bakes Aki dog treats at home -tends to want to share food with her; has to remind herself that feeding dogs human stuff isn’t generally that good of an idea -(however, Aki will inevitably end up getting a few tidbits when Mitsuri’s cooking/baking) -(only the stuff that’s ok for her to eat, though!) -also also Aki is exactly That Kind of dog, the type that you’d think only appears in animated movies -the type that matchmakes -she does that 101 Dalmatian thing to Mitsuri and this cute brunette dude they met at the park -(y’know, the whole “lol hoomans I am apparently the only one smart enough to notice the chemistry between you so I shall tie you together with my leash until one of you breaks”) Obanai: -I mean he canonically has a snek -Kaburamaru is a pure boy -Iguro first got his snake as a teenager, when he was still living with his family -it was the only true gift he was ever allowed from them -his home life…was not the best -he hated his parents and siblings and used to dream of the day he’d be able to leave -moved out as soon as he could afford it with Kaburamaru in tow -he loves his noodle all the more because snakes live long lives; Kaburamaru’s been with him through thick and thin, through all the bad times in his life -and Iguro moved out, he really was Iguro’s only friend -at this point, Iguro treats him more like a person than anything -he’ll sit next to Kaburamaru’s enclosure with a book in hand and chat to him about how ridiculous the plot is -will sometimes just let the snek boi out and let him wiggle around his neck while he does other stuff -hates social media but will post pics of the noodle -it’s all his Instagram has: -Aesthetic pics or cute videos of Kaburamaru just chilling -hates his neighbors and will answer the door with Kaburamaru on his shoulders + talking to the snake just to freak them out -kids in the neighborhood spread rumors that he’s a ~witch~ -he literally doesn’t give a damn as long as they leave him alone lmao -the reptilian equivalent of “Crazy Old Cat Lady” -funny thing is that he isn’t particularly fond of animals in general -Kaburamaru is, he’s decided, his first and last snake/pet -has heart attacks on the daily once he starts dating this really wonderful woman who owns a heckin dog, and a huge one at that. Iguro is not used to animals that shed. -also dog-proofed his house at first out of paranoia that Aki would eat his snek -(though he later warmed up to her and decided to trust that she probably wouldn’t lol) Uzui: -has two ferrets -one is cinnamon, the other is white -white bab is named Momo -cinnamon bab is named…Chanel -(can you guess who got naming rights on Chanel) -(hint: it was not one of Tengen’s wives) -the ferrets were bought because everybody in the household wanted a pet but nobody could agree on what animal they were going to get -(Tengen wanted a bird, Makio wanted a dog, Suma wanted a bunny and Hinatsuru wanted them all to shut up and actually do some research) -eventually, they somehow came up with a combination of the desired pet traits and decided that ferrets were the best fit -anyway Momo & Chanel are spoilt rotten -they live the most Expensive, most flamboyant lives a pair of ferrets could possibly live -Suma thinks they’re adorable and babies them -Makio loves how energetic and spunky they are -Hinatsuru is just quietly affectionate. It’s so cute to watch the rest of the family coo over them -Tengen considers them his children -he is the pet owner who dresses up for Halloween with them -(once he and the other three went as pirates with the ferrets as their parrots ack I hate that that rhymes lol) -and makes them Instagram famous -is probably considering dedicating a Youtube channel to them as well -it’s like -bruh -how obsessed could you possibly be with a pair of small furry slinkies -(very obsessed, apparently) -Chanel & Momo: *exist* -Tengen: fucking superb, you flamboyant little goblins :D -shows them off constantly to his friends -it was especially bad for the first couple of months after he got them -not that the showing off has died down over the years, the others have just…gotten used to his dramatics by now -tbh usually somebody (probably Hinatsuru) would stop him, but the other three are also too obsessed with their babies to be Mature about it Sanemi: -“Maybe I’ll get a dog,” Sanemi said to himself -“Other animals are kinda stupid and not my thing” -“Hi,” said Fate, dumping a betta fish in a plastic cup on his doorstep. “Will it work if I try to appeal to your soft side?” -Sanemi is r a g e -what kind of bastard just dumps a living fISH on a stranger’s doorstep -bro -wtf -he’s so angry -hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh -well, he keeps it in that plastic cup on his kitchen table, because he has *no clue* what to do with it -tries to call a few people and make them take it -fails -he stares furiously at the fish a little more before starting to feel uneasy because…can it…really survive in such a tiny cup -buys a cheap secondhand fish tank and some fish food that’s apparently for bettas -(Genya: no, see, this one’s specially for betta fish Sanemi: wtf is the difference) -posts stuff on social media “is there any sad shithead out there willing to take a stupid blue fish” -some people answer, Sanemi makes it clear that they have to chat with him first before coming to pick up the fish because he’s not a *monster,* he’s not gonna send the creature to a neglectful owner -turns out, he hates every single candidate. Or maybe he’s just…getting really knowledgeable about betta fish. Maybe he’s joined a group for first-time betta owners. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe he bought a new tank and new food and the betta is actually starting to look kinda perky and flashy -(Siamese fighting fish. It’s a fighting fish. It’s Fierce. Sanemi…does not dislike it. It’s kinda rad.) -Come to think of it. He did own stag beetles as a kid. Maybe dogs aren’t the only pets worth owning…? -the betta is eventually named Dragon, he gets a big tank, balanced diet, and a Marimo mossball friend, and Sanemi becomes a fish expert despite the fact that he swears this is “temporary” -(Shinobu, dropping by for lunch/to antagonize him: lmao right a ‘’’temporary’’’ tank that you decorated yourself and ‘’’temporary’’’ bloodworms in your freezer and ‘’’temporary’’’ smiling when you come home and your fish swims out to greet you) Himejima (warning: a little sad compared to the others. Some brief mentions of death/loss and grief) -has a seeing eye dog -she’s a black Labrador named Nana, and has been living with him for a few years now -they’re honestly a perfect match -Nana’s a sweet, steady dog and is good company for her owner -when she isn’t working, she’s pretty content to amble around the house and/or snuggle up to Gyoumei -having her has had a huge positive influence on him -he wasn’t exactly in the best state, emotionally, after losing his kids all those years ago -it took him a while to heal -and Nana’s presence grounded him throughout -she kept him from kind of shrinking into himself -at his darkest moments, Gyoumei might have preferred to reject help, even when his friends came to call -but Nana always barked happily and ran up to the door to welcome visitors -she’d whine and wake him up in the mornings -offer a ton of slobbery doggy kisses -it helped him open up again, little by little -Gyoumei is of the opinion that Nana was his main teacher in relearning how to trust people -he occasionally organizes playdates for her with Aki and Mitsuri -Mitsuri also knits matching sweaters for Aki and Nana -she sometimes throws in a sweater for Gyoumei, too -Nana is often bamboozled by Gyoumei when he prays or works out -hooman -hooman what are these strange and repetitive movements that you do -hooman why do you sit still with your hands together and ignore me -it’s kinda funny how she gets confused and starts sniffing Gyoumei or nudging him with her nose -though Gyoumei no longer truly requires encouragement to get out of bed in the mornings, Nana still makes a point of waking him up with kisses -and nuzzles -and doing this weird thing where she puts her paws on his cheeks like she’s trying to cup his face in her ‘‘‘hands’‘‘ lol -it coaxes a rare smile out of Gyoumei -Nana’s existence in general makes him smile

Axolotl 101

This is going to be a semi-long, informative post about Axolotls. You will find a Table of Contents with everything I will be covering. All facts have been checked and I will provide references as well. Any questions feel free to submit or send an ask, or even message me directly!

BRIEF HISTORY & HABITAT

Axolotls have only ever been native to Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco, both found in the Valley of Mexico. Lake Chalco no longer exists whereas Lake Xochimilco is barely considered a lake. Numerous factors such as non-native fish, industrialization, and pollution have all contributed to the rapid decline of the axolotl in the wild. Because of their decline in nature, the IUCN has listed them as a Critically Endangered Species.

In the wild, axolotls who live in Lake Xochimilco live in colder waters; which have shown to rarely rise above 20 C / 68 F. And becoming even colder in the winter. This also remains true for captive axolotls; said to thrive between 15.5 C / 60 F to 18.3 C / 65 F. They also live in freshwater.

Notes

While having trouble in the wild, they have been thriving well in captivity!

They are also being used in research due to their regeneration abilities.

DESCRIPTION

The axolotl is an amphibian that resembles salamander larvae with a bit of difference; sporting their signature gills, a caudal fin, wide heads, lidless eyes, underdeveloped limbs with long, thin fingers. Unlike salamanders, which grow out of this stage and become terrestrial, they continue to live under the water for the rest of their lives and keep their juvenile appearances even as adults. This is called Neoteny.

Metamorphosis

In some cases, axolotls have been known to metamorphosis for a couple of reasons:

In a lab setting where iodine is injected into the axolotl to encourage a metamorphosis.

Poor water/living conditions that force them to morph to escape said conditions.

I do not have enough reliable information on this, however, some owners claim that Tiger Salamander genes have been bred into their specific axolotl and has encouraged a metamorphosis in them.

Please understand that once an axolotl undergoes the metamorphosis, its lifespan is shortened and it will likely die within the next year or two. Even if there are a couple success stories; no matter what the axolotl isn’t meant to undergo this. This may be a personal and moral opinion, but I hope you agree as well.

REMINDER: PLEASE NEVER TRY TO MORPH YOUR AXOLOTL. JUST BUY A TIGER SALAMANDER.

Age / Sex / Lifespan

Axolotls will reach sexual maturity around the ages of 18-42 months. Although some sources claim it can be as early as 5 months depending on living conditions and food. Their sizes range anywhere from 15 to 45 cm / 6 to 8 inches. The average size is around 23 cm / 9 inches. Axolotls have been known to live from 10 to 15 years when kept in a good environment.

Male and Female axolotls are more easily sexed once they have fully matured. However, I was able to sex my own male axolotls after roughly 9 to 12 months of owning them. One tip I can give every axolotl owner for sexing their axolotl is to be patient. Especially when they are very young or have not reached their adult length it can be very difficult to tell.

Males will have a noticeably enlarged/swollen cloacae. Their bodies will be slimmer than their female counterparts, which is easier to see when looked at overhead.

Females do not have an enlarged/swollen cloacae. Sometimes, the cloacae might ever so slightly give way to a bump as you can see in the second pic. Females will also always be rounder, as their eggs are stored on the sides of their bodies.

Breeding

Upon reaching sexual maturity, which will vary from axolotl to axolotl and shown above, they will be able to breed. Females are said to mature a little slower than males.

For captive axolotls the breeding season isn’t too peculiar; as sources claim December to June is when they’re most likely to mate. However, due to being in captivity it is possible to encourage mating at any time of the year.

If you are planning on breeding your axolotls, it is advised to wait until your axolotls are of at least the ages of 18 months. That gives them time to grow and develop into their adult bodies. Especially for females, as the breeding and laying egg process can be very stressful on your little lady. For males, it is less strenuous, and in personal experience happens very often even without a female between my two males who are homed together.

Diet

In the wild, they eat worms, insects, and small fish. In captivity earthworms and nightcrawlers are well regarded as a primary source of healthy axolotl diet. People argue that bloodworms. Coloration & Types

According to most resources, there are 4 to 5 common morphs/types of Axolotls. This is because Albino’s are sometimes classified between the golden and the white kind, making it either 4 or 5 in the eyes of the individual. Section Source Section Source II

Wild Type

The most basic type.

They can have a combination of black, grey, green, and olive.

They are known to have golden/iridescent specs all around their body that will cause them to glitter and shine in bright light.

The center if their eyes are black with a golden/shiny ring around them.

Their gills can be greyish or purplish.

Leucistic

Also known as a Lucy, or a “pink” axolotl. Arguably the most well known and seen axolotl among those interested or not in the hobby and animal.

Known for their light, pale pink color.

Their eyes are darker (black or brown), making them different than an Albino.

Dark red or deep pink gills.

“Dirty Lucy’s” are the same as a regular Lucy, however, they have numerous amounts of black spots/dots around their face or body. Or both.

Albino

White Albino

They basically look like a Lucy but without color in their eyes, as they have no eye pigment

Gold Albino

Golden or peachy colored body, noticeably shiny patches also called iridophores.

Red/pink gills.

No eye pigment.

Melanoid

Often mistaken for a wild type and vice/versa. Melanoids are actually quite different.

They have increased pigment in their skin. Making them very, very dark brown or black all over.

Unlike Wild types, Melanoids cannot have shiny specs on their bodies.

Their eyes are solid black with no shiny ring around their eyes like Wild types.

Other Types & Morphs

GFP

“Green Fluorescent Protein” gives the axolotl with this gene the ability to glow vibrant green under UV or Blue lighting. Less pigment in the axolotl makes it easier to see. It can be in any morph as long as it is passed on by the parent.

Copper

A variation of the albino. They may have red-tinted eyes, with a brown/pink body color with darker spots along the body.

Chimera

“Chimerism in Axolotls is said to be when two eggs fuse together in development, and each side grows according to the egg it came from, often resulting in a split-down-the-middle appearance. One side can often grow at a slightly slower rate than the other.

Chimera cannot be duplicated in breeding, it is caused by an accident during development. The chances of an Axolotl being a chimera and surviving is a 0.00001% chance. There is also the argument that chimerism in Axolotls don't actually exist, but are actually mosaic and the color variation just happens to be split.”

Piebald

“Piebald is when an axolotls pigmentation goes all down the body and sides, not just along the head and top, like a leucistic.”

Sometimes heavily spotted Lucy’s are mistaken to be a Piebald. However, Piebald’s are very rare.

Firefly

“FireFly Axolotls are literally one of a kind. These Axolotls were produced by Lloyd Strohl II from Indiana USA in 2016. These one of a kind Axolotls are not genetically modified. They are produced by embryonic graphing. The reason for these Axolotls being produced is because Lloyd Strohl II is conducting a preliminary investigation into the distribution and activation of melanocytes in leucistic axolotls and, in particular, in mosaics. Regeneration

The distinct and unique feature the axolotl has is its amazing regenerative properties. Axolotls, unlike humans, when suffering the loss of a limb, will completely grow it back to normal as if it hadn’t been cut off.

Axolotls are known to regen limbs, their brain, spine, and the heart and other organs.

Facts

They’re super cute!

Unlike other animals, the axolotl is resistant to cancer by over as much as 1,000 times!

Mexico is the ONLY place they can be found in the wild.

To feed, it suctions up its food like a vacuum.

Axolotls can lay between 300 to 1,000 eggs!

They are illegal to own in California, Maine, New Jersey, and Virginia. In New Mexico, they are legal to own but illegal to import to other states.

According to many resources, Axolotl translates to Water Dog!

The Axolotl actually has some mythical background! Xolotl was known as a dog-headed god in the Aztec mythos. Apparently, Xolotl got mixed up in some affairs that made him concerned for his life, thus, he jumped into the lake and became an axolotl.

Opinions on the current Holmes family members (Siger Holmes, Violet Holmes, Sherlock Holmes and Eurus Holmes): Sherlock is cool and I like his intelligence, his violin sills, and he’s pretty good looking, despite him being a bit, well rude or too honest. As for Siger and Violet, I haven’t met them or got to know them but I’m sure they’re lovely (if they’re your parents, I’m sorry for not realizing that, I’d just like to say that they are what I would want for grandparents, they are so sweet, I love them.) Eurus, I feel that she had so much potential, but I really don’t know how to feel about her. On one hand I am just as impressed with her intelligence and skills as I am with Sherlock, but I’m also pretty terrified of her.

I had to read this damn thing like 6 times, but I figured it out! There is no letter “e” in the entire thing. Kind of cool given that “e” is the most common letter used in the English language.

(I liked this submission form. It’s defiantly more challenging and has to do with a lot more problem solving than the last one. I like puzzles and some of these really made me think.)

Melissa, I must say that I have heard many odd phrases in my lifetime both directly and in passing but never something akin to ‘I got burned with Holy Water once while at the Vatican' even with faulty translations at best. I would assume their would be a good story in correlation with that statement? I find it refreshing that you can take rejection so well despite stating that this is a regular occurrence for you. It takes a lot of time and practice for something like that not to effect you anymore and in the few times that I have been on the brunt end it does still carry a sting for me. But in private mind you as I cannot have my competitors or coworkers see me in a state of disarray. While I cannot say with any true glee that I have always been for the sciences ( my heart has always been on external things that tend to change more rapidly and could be controlled at a faster rate) than what concerns the inner workings of the human body much less than that of an animal however, I do have some know how about avian species and reptiles as Sherlock was wont to play with them. I am quite pleased that you attempted the puzzle and even more so that it is correct. My only issue is that if I took you up on a partnership is that you cannot be vindictive toward clients in a direct way. As a partnership with me would include dealing with some rather self-centered diplomats or government officials I'm afraid that in any instance of 'wrong doing' we would simply grin and bear it until the proper time comes to exploit it for personal gain. You can't exactly run the world if you burn too many bridges and make far too many enemies and you can see that with Mr. Moriarty's circles as well. You may not be too fond of the partnership considering on how big these meetings tend to run but rest assured we do need more Esperanto speakers. Just remember that in public everything must be clean and pristine which includes talk, work and the like but in private I will find no complaints from me.

Fantasy Online Fool - Poem and Thoughts

Fantasy Online Fool Turning truth for her favour Hiding flaws behind the filter Covering lies she's mastered Plays confident while sinking in her insecurities False Identity consumes her Playing pretend with every app Internet Image is contrast from reality Distorted views of worth while posing Seeking acceptance with every like and comment Feeling defined with every follow Attention is craved yet destructive Addicted to the online version she created Prefers the fake image than the reflection in the mirror Staying superior yet stuck in the fantasy online Ignoring the true version of herself with each post While playing the Fantasy Online Fool I really hope this poem isn't offensive as I know many who have felt this way with social media, including myself in the past. Wow where to begin... social media has so many pros and like many I have noticed the cons. I have been guilty of the selfie syndrome, and I still take selfies but not nearly as much as I used to or base my importance to the picture. I had lost about 50 lbs in my mid twenties and I was so proud and took many pics I posted on Instagram of my success. I was so happy to show off the now one chin I had. The high of feeling noticed, the new attention soon showed the downside I have learned over the years since. I noticed I was wondering about the "likes" and "comments" and the "follows". I was posing all the time and yet I felt bad about myself as I would see other's post their life, I compared myself to them all of the time. I know many people who pose like everything is great all the time, who put the pretty filters on and sometimes drastically change their real image. I have been guilty of a filter as well, nowadays I usually use the brightening option for a dark pic and not pretend with other filters. I know many who now have and use apps to change their body and faces, who can change their nose, make their chin smaller, creating flawless skin to cover any acne or scars. As well as the body, I know many who pose like she has the biggest booty in the world, skinniest body, and the truth is she does not have this body that she posts online. We all have posed at our flattering angles, I have and many and I am not trying to bring shame to that, I must applaud people I admire that post the true/reality versions of their selfies. It is refreshing because it is reality, and we need to show the younger generation what the truth is and not feel comparison or self worth by curse of the selfies. I became disturbed by this online madness as I grew closer to thirty. I thought to myself how can I let this get to me as an adult, and how are the youth surviving in today's standard of perfection that doesn't exist. I really struggled with myself as a teen and my image. I compared myself to magazine covers and music videos of tiny celebrities. I always gained muscle while working out and in those days in my teens, fitness and curves was not nearly as popular or accepted nowadays for the ladies. I would try to do as much cardio as possible, worried about the muscles in my arms and legs growing stronger. I wanted to be tiny and that wasn't my body. However I had some healthy amount of fat on me that I was ashamed and I thought I was disgusting. I feel very sad looking at those photos nowadays as I see a very different version than I did then. I would try crazy diets and fail, I would starve, binge and for a short time I tried to vomit my food (only lasted less than a week) to this day throwing up feels more traumatising because I am reminded of that experience. Growing up we had MSN to communicate online with others, and a site called Nexopia. We could upload pics from a digital camera, use a scanner to upload pics and take a picture from a webcam. I remember my first online bully that left a comment on my pic where everyone could see on Nexopia, "You fat fucking pig". It was really shitty, and looking back at the pics I looked far from it! I think it was a girl who obviously knew me and just didn't like me, or I probably liked the guy she liked. Facebook did not arrive online until my graduation year (so thankful). I honestly don't know how I would have survive my teen years stuck in the social media world of today. Years later Instagram arrived and I did not use this app until many years later, as I was very overweight and so insecure I would hide from any camera. I do admire about myself when I first got out of my long term relationship in my mid twenties, and I decided to try online dating. I was always honest about my weight and body, I didn't understand what the point is to try to pretend to be someone I wasn't and how awkward it would be to meet in person, looking nothing like my photo. Besides my round face I never could quite figure out to pose to look smaller than I was. I always mentioned to anyone I was interested in that I was on a weight loss journey, and it was taking time and I was working hard, but this is me and my body so take it or leave it. The truth is and I love this quote "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder". I love this because it is so true! what one may think is unattractive, the next person may think is gorgeous. We are all attracted to different looks, why pretend to look a different way for someone, when you can find someone who loves the look you currently have. Another humbling experience was when I lost a lot of weight, I had reached out to past lovers or people I went on dates with from my past. I think I believed I had now lost weight and maybe now it would all work differently. This was not the case, it did not change what happened and the truth is, a lot of the men at the time liked my look then. Most actually preferred the way I looked before and did not prefer how I looked now. It really does make sense because at that the time they liked me for how I was. Now with weight loss and changes of how I look, one day I will find someone that likes how I look now. Another thing about social media, I would see couples posting how happy they were all the time and in real life I ran into some of these people, and which they revealed it was not real. Some would say how they had just broken up, or struggling after this perfect post I just recently liked. I know we cannot post all our hard times, but I did notice that I shouldn't feel so alone looking at these couples posting happy all the time, because the truth is we don't know what is really going on behind the online persona. Awareness is key and I believe society is noticing, and I hope we can spread the word to not compare, or easily believe all that we see online as real and perfect. The thing that truly scares me is the false sense of identity some feel from the internet, they fall for the "likes", "follows" and "comments" and some feel superior of others from it. This concerns me because they may be posing as someone that truly doesn't look anything like the person in real life, and lets face it you are not better than anyone because you can take a flattering picture and saturate the photo with filters. What message are we sending to youth? are we saying not to accept who we are, and it is better to pretend to be confident with who you pretend to be online?. We need to remind ourselves to admire those who are trying to make a difference in this world by their actions and kindness, not by the photo they decide to post. Again I don't want to come across as judgemental as I have been guilty of this to some degree as well. I have to limit my time on social media and be constructive on who I follow, and what I want to look at. Reality checks are huge when it comes to social media and I am the adult looking. Being authentic is much more beautiful than the pretend, I really hope as society we can share this with the next generation. Let's try to share acceptance and love for who and what we look like in reality, instead of the online fantasy that has so much power over the youth today, and for the upcoming generations.
