something I've been thinking about is how interesting it would be to see the goblincore/gremlincore/corvidcore type aesthetic to evolve into an actual subculture. obviously for starters we should change the name bc anything ending in -core just doesn't sit right with me? unless of course it becomes that "placeholder name turns true name" sorta deal but ANYWAY.

main three key elements I've noticed that tend to make up a subculture is: style/outfit presentation (the optional part), belief system, and music genre(s).

style and presentation: (like what you wear), that part is already obvious if you ever followed the aesthetic at any point. (it was trendy for a time I think, is it still trendy? bc idk if it is but that's not stopping me from loving it.) basically wearing majority earth colors like browns and greens, stuff like hobbit-esque cloths or sweaters and stuff. definitely LOTS of nature based themes or just wearing weird trinkets. gotta go for that "creature directly out of the chronicles of spider wick" type look you know?

with the clothes (and often interior design I've noticed, which my entire bedroom would probably fit the aesthetic actually) one thing I've noticed for most who are into the aesthetic is there is a LOT of DIY. also going out and collecting things you find (anything from mystery trinkets to dead bugs and sticks and rocks, which I grew up doing and would call myself a tinker bc I made stuff out of what I found very often).

belief system: I feel like, above all else, beliefs commonly held among people in this aesthetic is to respect and be in nature, as well as do not waste, reduce and reuse. a lot of environmentalist like stuff, as well as seeing and respecting the beauty of nature, from butterflies and flowers to dirt and corpses. I don't have a solid concrete answer for belief system, but hopefully that sums up my view on it.

music genre: folk/folk punk, fantasy DND type genres, and nature based lyrics and vibes. from my experience and digging around, there's less artists who catch the vibe of this aesthetic all around (bc that's not what they're trying to do), and moreso having a couple or handful of songs that fit so very well. unless of course it's a genre of music that is enheritly matching to this aesthetic.

anyway, I'm not great at explaining the music aspect of it, but I feel like if it's magical and yet sorta punk-like that can work. no limits here yet, I have a playlist on my youtube that definitely pushes the boarders but who cares? the thing has celtic woman and httyd score on it. I just think if this evolved into having music for the genre (idk if we could call it a music based genre since it didn't start that way but I mean overall having a genre of music dedicated to this aesthetic-turned-subculture) it would be really interesting to hear what comes of it.

circling back for a minute, I feel like punk comes hand-and-hand with a couple of things here, but specifically mainly eco-punk. like diy, reduce and reuse, etc. as well as the music, while not deeply punk still feels like it would have a punk undercurrent.

I also think this could parallel well with goth, with the dark romantic sorta stuff. the music and belief system having love and adoration for the strangest and darkest aspects of nature, similar to goths seeing beauty in the darkness and creepiness of the world.

if anyone actually read this I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on my little rant (suggestions for bands/musicians and similar subcultures/subculture parallels are very encouraged) bc I grew up doing pretty much everything within this aesthetic long before I knew it was a thing or maybe even before it was a thing. that isn't meant to be gate keepy. I mean that when I found out just how many other people liked and did the same things as me, it was just so cool. so I just really wanna talk to people about this and I think something like this aesthetic could easily become a subculture one day.

For the Corinthian: 7, 8, and 19

7. ...the scene that I think adds depth to their character or the relationship this character has with someone.

Literally every scene with Jed, but specifically the ice cream one. He’s just *so* inhuman in very interesting ways. Sure, he’s charming and friendly, but he’s also weird as shit - you can definitely see his nightmare aspect bleeding through when he imitates Barnaby’s voice, and he’s not even trying to be scary! He’s actually legitimately trying to relate to Jed here, but the tools he has at his disposal aren’t necessarily the same ones a human would be equipped with.

His friendship with Jed in general is fascinating to me, especially compared to how he treated him in the comics (stuffing him in the back of his car). It’s funny to me that Corinthian is probably the first adult that actually protected Jed (excluding Gault ofc, but I think that’s more complicated since idk how much he understands/retains from his dreams). I would love for season 2 to have some kind of Jed & Cori 2.0 reunion ugh

8. …a headcanon I have about this character.

I don’t really have any huge, fandom-shaking HC’s for him, but I’ve got a couple smaller ones! For starters, I definitely don’t think he knows who Hob Gadling is at all. I know there’s a lot of HC’s about everyone in the dreaming being fascinated by Dream’s human drinking buddy, but realistically I think very few people notice his once-a-century absence, and if they do, I can’t imagine they’d really care.

I tend to HC Corinthian’s relationship with Dream as a one-sided father/son dynamic, too. Does Corinthian have daddy issues? Absolutely. Can I see him referring to Dream as his “father” to a human or someone who didn’t know what was up? 100%. Would Dream *ever* consider Corinthian his son? Hahaha. Nope.

This one is very silly, but I also HC that Carl topped the hell out of that man. I think Corinthian largely prefers to bottom, and you know, and I think he’s a total pillow princess, too. Baby’s all about *sensation*! He’s soaking it in!

19. …a song that describes how I feel about this character.

Oh man, anytime I hear “I Want More” by Shawn James, my brain immediately screams “Corinthian!” There’s such a raw yearning in that song, combined with this miserable kind of resignation that really tracks with how I imagine the Corinthian wanted so badly to survive and enjoy the waking, but also still probably figured that wasn’t the most likely end to his story.

Some of the lyrics give me the *most* Corinthian energy too:

synopsis: when it came to the third time you spiraled, emile doesn't let it go easily

content/warnings: this might get a tad bit emotional so brace urselves, emile being the most understanding bf in the world, emile peeing (???), lmk if i missed out anything! 🤍

it's one thing to spiral every other night, but it's another when you realise it's been a shit week for you because of how regular your spirals come at night.

it first happened at dinner. you had made some carbonara pasta to soothe your cravings, emile being okay with anything because the man eats everything and you know emile would love to eat something other than chicken breasts and vegetables. you'd dropped your fork, which startled ems, and your hands began to shake. "you okay?" emile's smooth croydon accent flowed into your ears as he carefully allowed his cutleries to lean inside the bowl of pasta.

"yeah, i should be." you gave him a vague answer, not wanting your own struggles to clash with his, because god knows he probably already has a lot on his plate, what with trying to prove to mikel every time he gets minutes on a game that he's getting fitter by the day and that he is starting xi material. even on days when he isn't working, he'd drag himself to the gym. you appreciated his determination to get back onto the pitch and be a regular starter like he was two seasons ago.

emile, knowing you and your adamant attitude, shrugged it off, still looking at you warily, as if you were going to break again if he looks away. after dinner, he had offered to do the dishes. you had declined, saying you were mentally good enough to do the dishes and it was all just a scare.

"no babe. with all due respect, i don't believe you. so go sit down, watch your netflix and let me do this. i swear, i'm okay with it." emile had reassured you, and so you did what he'd told you to do. you sat on the couch and watched a little bit of bojack horseman while you waited for him to finish up in the kitchen.

the second time happened when you and emile were in bed, about to call it a night. emile was reading an article on his phone while you were slowly drifting off to la-la-land; something you tend to do before you fall asleep because it helps you focus on one thing.

emile began to notice your breathing becoming more shallow and shallow by the second, so he dropped his phone on the covers and leaned forward to look at your face. you'd tried your best to keep your cool, knowing damn well that if you don't, your boyfriend's gonna start to pull you out of bed to do your breathing exercises; something your therapist had taught you, when you were already feeling sleepy.

"you okay? why you breathin' like that?" emile's raspy voice took over your thoughts, which allowed your mind to understand that he was on the verge of falling asleep before he heard your heavy breathing.

"nothing." you answered, but you sounded like you were holding your breath. and so emile propped his pillow upward before adjusting his posture so he'd be sitting up.

"don't lie to me. are you spiraling again?" emile tilted his head downward, which is something he does when he begins to feel disturbed with something that clearly was affecting you so much.

"no i'm not. i'm fine, go to sleep." you finally found your breath, doing a breathing exercise as you pushed emile's shoulder that was closest to you downward, hoping he'd get under the covers fully and fall asleep.

and then it happened again.

here you are, in the bathtub at 3am, trying your best not to let your sobs rack through your entire body by having both your hands clamped over your mouth. most importantly, you weren't trying to wake emile up. not when he's got training in exactly three hours' time. suddenly, you hear the rummaging of the sheets from outside. you'd been sobbing in the dark, so you assumed emile had probably tried to find you next to him, only to feel the cold sheets take your place instead of your body.

you hear emile's feet dragging across your hardwood floor, and then the sound of a flick of the switch as the bathroom light almost blinds you after being in the dark for a while. his eyes are adjusting to the sudden light as he looks for the toilet, then noticing that he wasn't alone.

the love of his life was sobbing in the bathtub all alone, and he wanted to know why. "baby, what the hell are you doin' here!" he yelled silently and sleepily at the same time, his bedroom voice very prominent now. he kneels before the bathtub, squinting at you as he still needed time to adjust to the bright bathroom light.

"what are you doing?" you say, abruptly wiping your tears away, trying to pretend that everything's okay. but emile knew it wasn't. you'd spiraled twice before he found you in here, in the dark, all alone.

"wanted to pee. then i find you here and suddenly i don't feel like peeing anymore." emile says, rubbing his eyes, then adjusting his hair a little.

"go pee, you loser," you shove him towards the toilet. and so he did. he got up and peed. but before he did, he'd given you his don't look at me pee eyes. "i won't look."

you notice yourself getting out of the bathtub and dragging your feet towards ems. whenever he pees at night, he pees with his eyes closed. he said it helps him go back to sleep easily, so he didn't realise your getting out of the bathtub and standing behind him. as soon as he turns his body to go back to bed, your head collides into his bare chest, your arms around his waist.

emile said nothing, he knew that all you need was for someone to be there, a shoulder to lean on. although eventually, when you didn't think of pulling away, he had to say something. "you wanna talk about it?"

"not really," you mumble. "but tell me something."

"anything." he whispers.

"tell me that you're still mine," you finally look up from burying yourself in emile's chest. "don't convince me, just tell me."

"i'm not goin' anywhere," he pulls his hands away from your waist so he could put it on both sides of your face. "what else do you want me to tell you?"

"tell me that we'll be fine. even if i lose my mind one more time. tell me it isn't my fault." you shut your eyes tight as your mind keeps telling you things you don't specifically want to hear when you're in your boyfriend's arms.

"we're gonna be alright. you're gonna be just fine. now, can we please stop crying in the bathtub all alone?" emile looks up from holding eye contact with you. "if you need to cry, just cry. you don't have to be scared about waking me up. if anything, i want you to cry on me, y'know."

he just had to make you laugh, didn't he?

"i love you, stinky. i've never meant it more than right now." he reminds you as you walk with him back to bed under his arms, flicking the bathroom light switch off.

Aw man, that's a tough one since I'm such a nerd for music. I mean, just because I love a song doesn't mean it's technically perfect, and I'm sure there are technically flawless songs that I absolutely can't stand.

I'm currently in trade school for special effects makeup! And on a smaller scale, as soon as Misery is closed I'll be learning how to puppeteer a giant plant for Little Shop of Horrors :)

I have one younger sister. We're both queer and have ADHD, and we share a lot of similar nerdy interests. We used to not get along well (I think because our mom tended to pit us against each other and we ended up taking it out on each other) but as we've grown up we've gotten much closer. We're very different people for the most part - I'm tidier, more artistic, more outgoing and adventurous, I'm more of a movie buff while she prefers video games, and our music tastes are worlds apart - but we've got enough similarities to bond over. I just took her to a convention a couple weeks ago and we had a blast there!

My best friend and I have a running joke that I'm constantly cosplaying 3 or 4 different characters at any given time (just bc of how I look and dress). They switched around, but the usual ones were Vi from Arcane, Eddie Munson, Gwen Stacy and Hobie Brown (I look more like Gwen but dress more like Hobie), and comicverse Quicksilver. We also joked that they were going to make a scrapbook comparing me to those characters and put it on our coffee table as a conversation starter.

The first one that popped up was Bang Bang by Green Day. I don't really associate it with anything in particular, I just like the song. I guess maybe a few of the lyrics reminded me of Polka Dot Man since I first listened to it after the new Suicide Squad came out (specifically the "daddy's little psycho and mommy's little soldier" part)

Thank you so much for the tag, dear!! Music is so important to me, it makes me sparkle with joy when someone wants me to talk about it!

Originally, I wanted to pursue a musical career, but it was strictly forbidden by my family. Only now I'm starting to get into art, but music has always been a secret passion for me "^^

So without further ado, first one is the music we have in common, second one is mine:

Why did I underline a few in Kaus'?

Siouxsie and the Banshees and DIO are two artists that I've heard of and want to check out more of their music. Siouxsie, I haven't heard, but given the fact I like The Cure, I think I'm gonna like it. DIO, I've heard a couple of songs, mostly from my Guitar Hero days, and I do like it. Gotta check more music.

Arctic Monkeys, I think I have a couple of their songs on my playlist. I don't know MUCH about them, but the songs I have, I enjoy very much!

Rachmaninoff, I listen to whenever I'm on a piano listening mood. Given that Matt Bellamy from Muse is very much inspired by him, I listened to a lot of Rachmaninoff when I was in high school - but I don't really have one specific song I like to listen to. I'm more of a Tchaikovsky girl, given that I do adore all his ballets too xD

A little bit more about mine

My musical preference is everywhere, but there are two important moods: beautiful idyllic romantic Studio Ghibli style and let's set the whole fucking world on fire style. Also, there's the good vibes fun type of music.

Regarding favourite bands: Muse and U2 are at the very top of my list, since I was a kid. I love their sound, their feeling, experimentation, lyrics, visuals... Everything. I borrow a lot from them when writing and playing.

Also, I absolutely adore Matt Bellamy.

Cazuza and Skank, if you never heard about them, they are Brazilian musicians with GREAT songs. From Skank, I recommend Resposta, Garota Nacional and Vou Deixar as starters. From Cazuza, the poet of Brazil, I recommend Ideologia, O Tempo Não Para and Brasil. Get the translation of the lyrics - you're gonna cry with O Tempo Não Para. I guarantee it.

On OSTs: I listem to them a lot. When I was a rebellious little piano player, I found in OSTs the common ground with my family who wanted me to play classical music while I wanted to play rock n' roll. I have a deep love for it now - and I gotta say, Cyberpunk 2077 has one of THE BEST OSTs I've ever heard in my life. So many songs from it on my playlist :')

I'm also using it and Darksynth and Industrial Metal while I'm writing my Cyberpunk-style book, it's more than amazing.

Johnny Silverhand is ALSO amazing, I love that unlovable man, he definitely inspired my whole book and another personal story I have which is literally a woman who talks with ghosts and her guardian angel who is a recently deceased rockstar :)

Well, regarding piano: like I said, I'm more of a Tchaikovsky person, love most of his work. I also like Liszt, Debussy, Mozart, Vivaldi and such; but I also love searching for piano covers of modern songs you think are never going to turn out good - but then lo and behold, they do.

That's 'cause I like playing music by ear on the piano. My mom says what she likes about it is that she never imagines the songs I choose could sound good on the piano, but I make it obvious that the melody of the song itself is beautiful. I don't think it's a "me" thing, I think we often get distracted by everything else in the song, we tend to ignore that ultimately what we fall in love with is the beautiful melodies behind it.

Overall, I like controversial people who make music, art and lyrics that make people think. I like a more sort of in-your-face kind of thing, that actually says things and fights what's seen as conventional/conservative society. I do think art is a way to fight the system and being counter-politically-correct is an inherent part of it (with its limits too, I have to add).

I'm aware it's an extreme point of view and not everyone agrees with it, you're welcome to disagree with me, don't worry! ^^

I'm a product of catholic school

Now, after all my musical blabbering, I also have to state I have an unhealthy thing for bassists and guitarrists. Dunno why, I fall in love with them and I adore musical people. I could happily drown in their music, no regrets.

My tendencies are bigger towards bassists, though

And this is the son of a b*tch who decided to claim my heart currently and I'm hating it, my personal nightmare.

I live on a farm and we use to butcher our own sheep for cheaper meat. Because of this, lamb became one of my favorites to eat and I froth at the price of it in grocery stores.

I also grew up with my dad taking grocery bags full of apples, peaches, and cherries off the trucks he drove for work, and thus became spoiled with free fruit so I also froth at the price of them in grocery stores.

Least Favorite Faceclaim(s): I generally don’t care who/what a person uses because we all see our muses how we see them and that’s that. But I definitely dislike face claims that are EXCEPTIONALLY gorgeous/sexy, or who do the freaking blank-face-expressionless model staring. The former is just a major turn off to me because I always get the sense that I’m supposed to automatically find this face claim (and thus the muse) attractive and I spitefully won’t, and the latter just peeves me because I personally like to use face claims and icons for examples of expression, so the sheer lack of expression defeats the whole purpose of everything to me.

------Fluff/Angst/Smut!-----

Fluff: I'm down for it but easily bored by it too since it often calls for everything to be feel-good, wholesome, pure, and just perfectly amazing the whole ride, which rapidly exhausts me. I like slice of life a little more. It’s less performative and can lead into whacky situations, which are very entertaining to me. Angst: Love it, but I’m also extremely picky about it. I do not like characters that are plagued by constant (or near constant) hardship/angst and I do not enjoy having anything/everything turned into a matter of angst. And I’ll admit I can be bad about the latter point so I don’t have much room to talk, but my god. Smut: I’m not opposed to it... with my shipping partners. Anyone else, no. Don’t even try it and don’t bother approaching if that’s all you want/write. I’m not into it. BONUS Shipping: I’m open to it but I generally prefer to ship with the partners and-or friends I feel comfortable and close with. I’m also a bit of a freak and can’t do 0-to-60 shipping. You open the gate with “okay so our muses are in love and this is how mine would say ‘I love you’ first to yours” I’m dipping because I need a feel for how our characters interact before I can even begin to speculate on how their relationship will be. I Think Astro Likes Synth-Pop: And Other Music Headcanons I Have

Music is everywhere. Some of us enjoy it as background noise to listen to while working on what we need to get done, others may have a dedicated interest in it. No matter where you fall, you would still say there’s at least one (or two) songs, artists, or genres that you prefer, right? Well, today, I thought I would talk a bit about my opinions (or “headcanons” as they’re called) regarding what I think (some) of the 2003 series cast would enjoy!

I should note as a disclaimer, that for the purposes of this post, I will be (for the most part) pulling from my pre-existing Rolodex of songs I know. I did try my best to do some research into new songs, but ultimately most of what’s mentioned here are songs I’ve already known and enjoyed for quite some time. And as an obvious aside, these choices are just my opinion, and you’re free to disagree with my picks or general direction. However, I do ask that you exercise some level of respect– if you’re thinking of replying with something rude or unnecessary, consider putting that energy into making your own blog post! But if you do have some kind suggestions or thoughts, feel free to reply to this post or shoot me an ask.

2003 Series

For starters, let’s talk about the show as a whole. Obviously, I can’t in this context talk about listening habits, but I will talk about songs and artists I generally gravitate towards.

I find for the most part, what constitutes an AB related song is 90% lyrical content and 10% instrumental/musical content. Some songs may not totally fit in the lyrical department, but the instrumental is good enough that I still consider it a decent fit. Other times, I find that only 1-2 lines in a song fit AB, in those cases, I tend to save those songs for use in my design posters over at @astorinx. When a song is a perfect fit, though, you best believe I’m thinking of ways I could turn it into an AMV, even if I never get around to actually making it.

Artists I tend to associate with AB are (typically) Washed Out and Tame Impala, but there are some other single songs that I do think fit. I did already make a video listing songs I think fit AB (which you can watch here) but here are some other picks:

Lorde – Bravado

Possibly, one of the oldest picks that’s stood the test of time. I knew the minute I heard this for the first time, it was a perfect fit for AB. Perhaps some may argue this isn’t a 100% snug fit, and I do see where you’re coming from, but I couldn’t possibly pass up a song that literally has the lyrics “I was raised up / To be admired, to be noticed” and  “I want the applause, the approval / The things that make me go…”

A song with somewhat similar theme would definitely have to be “Patience” by Tame Impala.

Daft Punk – Robot Rock

This is one of those songs I’m shocked I didn’t include originally. I mean, it has “robot” in the name, it’d be sacrilegious for me not to mention it! There isn’t much substance to this song from a lyrical standpoint, but I think that makes for a great fit because there’s less to get caught up in and more opportunity to daydream about whatever AB related thing you want. 10/10 would recommend for anyone just wanting a general vibe, or perhaps some good background music to accompany their fanfic writing.

Another song that isn’t plot-specific and relates to AB on a more general scale, I think, is “Dusk to Dawn On Lygon Street” by King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard.

Crumb – Part III

For this pick, I decided to have it be a reference to my secret project (that I hope I’ll be starting on sometime next year, time, and psych knowledge be willing). Of course, I’m not going to spoil the entire plot, but all you need to know for this pick to make sense is that the fic basically surrounds/documents Astro’s time as a twenty-something in therapy.

What I like about this song so much is the lyrical content, especially with the lyrics “It’s just a feeling” repeated towards the latter half of the song. And of course, the painfully obvious “I could spend the day and think of all the ways…”. I guess you could argue that this song fits in with canon, but it’s those little details that really sold me on this being a great song for my project. It’s also a neo-psych song, so of course I couldn’t pass it up.

“Amor Fati” by Washed Out is also another song I think represents the project quite well!

Astro

Funny enough, I think Astro’s taste in my eyes has definitely changed over the years. Starting with Vivid Insomnia, my partner and I had written them off to be the most stereotypical pop punk emo fan there was. Then we had The Love Trilogy, where Astro infamously enjoyed quite a bit of artists like Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. But the most ironic thing about it now, is that I don’t actually think Astro listens to music all that much! At least not compared to say other characters in the series, or even myself. This isn’t to say I don’t think they like it or anything, but for them, I think it comes down to what’s the best to have on while cleaning or getting work done. Essentially, I think they’re the perfect candidate for being the president of the “music as background noise” club.

Another thing to consider, is a phenomenon that while I can’t say without foolproof evidence exists/happens to everyone, I’m certainly employing it here. And that is the concept of inheriting your parent(s) taste. In my opinion, I think the things our parents listened to while we grew up can be instrumental in what shapes our music taste and opinion. Of course, as I mentioned, this isn’t a given, and I’m sure plenty of people out there would argue their taste is nothing like their parents. But, for the purposes of this blog post, I think a lot of what Astro enjoys does at times hinge a little on what I think Tenma and O’shay enjoy.

So, what examples do I have? Well, let’s see!

Duran Duran – The Reflex

It’s hard to condense an entire decade into 1 genre, or even 1 genre into a single song or artist, but there’s something about “The Reflex” that fits so well that when I first heard it, it made me think, “oh yeah, Astro would surely fuck with this.” To me, this just screams music to clean your apartment to, and is surely one that they’re bopping along to while doing the dishes.

Two other songs I think are well worth consideration are “1999” by Prince and The Human League’s “(Keep Feeling) Fascination,” both of which were actually my top 2 picks about a year ago before I discovered “The Reflex”!

Crystal Waters – 100% Pure Love

One of the things I set out to not do while making this list, is to fall into clichés. So, for this pick, I decided instead of going with the obvious Daft Punk or Justice track, I’d pick something else, like “100% Pure Love.” What makes me think this would be a great pick for them is the fact that it’s (again) so gosh darn catchy, and falls well within the bounds of EDM that this second slot is meant to represent. Even though it is a bit… expected… lacking a better term, for Astro– a robot, to like EDM, I still can’t find a reason to suspect it wouldn’t be part of their Rolodex of genres they like.

“Do You Miss Me” by Jocelyn Enriquez and “Music Sounds Better With You” by Stardust are my 2 honorable mentions in this category.

Coldplay – The Scientist

Finally, for Astro, we go a little left field into the world of pop rock. Though there are many haters of this genre, I still find myself thinking this is the perfect fit for Astro. Sure, maybe artists like Nickelback and Imagine Dragons aren’t all that well regarded, but for this example I specifically chose Coldplay because for many they’re at least tolerable. As it pertains to Astro, however, any pop rock artist is fair game. I’d imagine if they couldn’t/didn’t fly and had to travel by car like the rest of us, this would be the soundtrack to the many a traffic jams they’d have to annoyingly sit through, thanking the stars that their morality prevents them from starting shit, fueled exclusively by road rage.

Of course, this isn’t the only pop rock song they enjoy, OneRepublic’s “Stop and Stare” and The Fray’s “Look After You” are part of the deal too.

Reno

I gotta be honest, y’all. I have no idea how this happened. But I think Reno and I have the exact same music taste. Though, I would go out on a limb and say that unlike me, Reno can certainly expand upon what he listens to, whereas I tend to just stick to what I already like, too picky to introduce anything new to the mix. Regardless, Reno’s quite the music lover. And he loves talking about his love for music even more. He may not be the guy to go to for a rather straightforward and concise song recommendation, but he’ll at least clue you in on what’s popping left of the radio dial. When he gets his own lab, he’s sure to have it filled to the brim with music posters of all kinds. It’d be hard to walk in and catch him doing anything else than at least hearing something good on vinyl.

Tame Impala – Apocalypse Dreams

Similar to how I can’t make a list about 03 related songs and can’t leave out music with “robot” in the title, I can’t make a list about songs I think Reno likes and leave out the biggest artist of them all: Tame Impala. Just like yours truly, Reno is for sure Tame’s #1 fan, even though I think he’d probably be very opinionated about which Tame songs are best. Originally, I had intended to make “Endors Toi” my pick, but after considering my honorable mentions, I thought “Apocalypse Dreams” was the better choice because of how anthemic it is. I should also state the obvious that though Tame is Reno’s favorite, he is not the only neo-psych artist he listens to. Some other examples would be Animal Collective, GUM and, King Gizzard (though it should be noted that KGATLW has made music in many genres, but they are most known for their neo-psych songs).

The honorable mentions that inspired me to pick “Apocalypse Dreams” are “Desert Horse” by Melody’s Echo Chamber and “Billabong Valley” by King Gizzard.

Sleater-Kinney – What’s Mine Is Yours

For the longest time, I had reserved this spot for pop punk, and while I can’t say I don’t entirely disagree with it still being a genre Reno likes, I’m more inclined to think that just straight-up punk rock is the vibe. In this case, I’m dipping into the archives of what’s known as “Riot Grrl” a genre many see as “female punk” or even “feminist punk.” It should be noted that this genre had its heyday back in the 90s and while it still exists today, it certainly is not at the same popularity level that it once was. Especially when you consider most of the acts that pioneered the genre have either moved on to other adjacent genres, or have quit their acts altogether. As it pertains to Reno, however, what drives me to think this fits him is just based off the general idea that Reno just likes rock. Music with killer vocals and driving drums like “What’s Mine Is Yours” I think appeal to him to such a degree that it was hard to not want to make it the second pick, even if it meant overthrowing perhaps an MCR or Fall Out Boy song.

Some other songs within this genre that I think he’d like are “Bruise Violet” by Babes In Toyland, and “TKO” by Le Tigre.

Franz Ferdinand – The Dark Of The Matinée

Finishing off with our “Reno listens to rock” theming, we end with our final pick, indie rock. Something something indie rock is really catchy blah blah blah. At this point, I think it’s not hard to decipher why he likes it. I should stipulate, however, that when I talk about indie rock, I’m mostly thinking about it through the lens of the 2000s through acts like The Killers, Arctic Monkey’s, and The Strokes. Not to say that modern indie rock is trash, but I think for this blog post, it's safe to assume he’s more likely to be playing El Camino as opposed to Half Drunk Under A Full Moon.

Even though I just mentioned The Fratellis’ latest record, their debut, Costello Music, is far superior and has my first honorable mention “Doginabag.” My second one would be “Whoo! Alright, Yeah…Uh Huh” By The Rapture.

Retro

Of course, I couldn’t make a list of AB music headcanons and not talk about the only ship I have: Retro.

I would say over the years, the songs I’ve found that relate to Retro transcend genre and popularity, there’s just as many obscure hits as there are top 40 hits that describe their relationship best. For the 3 songs I've chosen for this post, they each satisfy a different viewpoint/angle to their dynamic, hopefully encapsulating them as best I can.

Jane Inc – Human Being

You can’t possibly have the beginning lyrics to your song be “Move it across my cheek / So I can pretend to be / A human being / Like I used to be” and have me not immediately think this is the perfect song to represent Retro. I mean, there isn’t a lyric or infliction that doesn’t represent them both to an almost alarming degree. Detractors I’m sure though would point out the line “Lips red and glittered / I make my hair bigger / Feel the fabric tight against my skin” and say it doesn’t apply, but no no no, that’s not a bug, that’s a feature. If you know me in any capacity, you know I headcanon Astro as nonbinary, and with that, I’ve opened myself up to seeing them in a lot more possibilities, two of which are them wearing makeup, and them (at least trying to be) a fashionista. If anything, that just makes this even more niche and feel like Ms Carlyn Bezic (AKA Jane Inc) read one of my fanfics and made a song about it (I’m being sarcastic, of course.)

One song I would’ve loved to have picked would’ve been “Dancing With You” also by Jane Inc, but at 7 minutes long, I knew I had to pick something shorter, and I’d say “Human Being” fits even more than “Dancing With You” anyway. So instead, it is my honorable mention along with the song I probably would’ve picked had I never listened to Jane Inc before, “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5, and the timeless track that will always make me emo, “Paralyzed” by Washed Out.

Sleater-Kinney – Rollercoaster

Another Sleater-Kinney pick, yes, but this one is dedicated (again) to my secret project. Again, I can’t say too much without spoiling the plot, but I will leave you with the lines “I’ll go at full boil / ‘Till you st-st-stop me later” and let you think about what it all could mean.

“Let’s Call It Love” similarly to “Dancing With You” was cut for being too long, but let it be known that the entire “Wasted all my fucking time” part of the song, “I’ve got a long time for love” and, “Show me your darkest side / And you better be my bloody match” are why this is an honorable mention. And guess what? “I Follow You” by Melody’s Echo Chamber is an honorable mention, too!

Tame Impala – Breathe Deeper

A theme that’s as old as I’ve been shipping Retro has got to be Astro’s insecurity. Now, this isn’t a post about psycho-analyzing Astro, so I’ll keep my thoughts short and brief, sadly without context or evidence. But Astro needs comfort. Ultimately, when push comes to shove, there are times when they certainly feel inadequate or just need a refresher on how great they are. But what they wish to receive, they simultaneously are willing to give back to others. Why I picked “Breathe Deeper” is specifically for its chorus:

(And she said) Seems you're coming on

Breathe a little deeper

Should you need to come undone

And let those colors run

Now you're having fun

So do this and get through this

And come find me when you're done

So we can be as one

Furthermore, during the beat switch up, the lines “We're both adults while we behave like children / Long as we got enough to keep on living” remind me of my project, even though I think this song works both within the project’s context, and out.

A song with a similar theme that I’ve picked is “Yam Yam” by No Vacation

Uran

Even though I don’t know nearly enough about Uran compared to Astro and Reno, I still, however, felt it only made sense to include her on this list. In my opinion, I see her listening habits as being somewhat in the middle between Astro’s extremity of it being wallpaper, and Reno’s extremity of it being inseparable from his being and one of his (many) hyper-fixations. She does like what she likes, but it’s more than just “get ready with me” songs, it’s the soundtrack to her drive around the city, what consoles her after having a rough time, and presumably what she takes with her on vacation.

Mako Ishino – 光の中で振り向くわたし

I knew somewhat about city pop before making this post, but after getting recommended by the Discord server I’m in to make it a pick for Uran, I came to learn a bit more about it. Who knew it was so catchy! In my opinion, this reminds me a lot of the synth-pop that Astro enjoys, which I suppose makes this pick funny. Now, since I didn’t technically come up with this all on my own, I can’t say exactly why I think this fits, but if I had to guess, I’d say its popularity in Japan and just how good many of the songs are, is to blame. Overall, though, Uran… you have great taste.

2 other city pop songs I thought sounded great are “私達を信じていて” by Cindy and, Miki Matsubara’s “真夜中のドア/Stay With Me”

Rina Sawayama – STFU!

Listen… who is doing it like Ms. Sawayama? I think everything off her debut Sawayama is precisely what Uran is looking for. Pop, but make it edgy, a little experimental, and hella, hella catchy. In fact, she’s doing it so well, I struggled to find songs that were similar that I thought Uran would like (actually that’s low-key a lie, but I’m not putting inappropriate songs on this blog post). Regardless, Uran and I both know Rina slaps, and this song is the perfect FU to people who commit microaggressions against marginalized people.

Even though it was hard, I did manage to find some honorable mentions, which are “Hole Heart” by Pyra and “PUNCHLINE” by Jaguar Jonze

Fiona Apple – I Want You To Love Me

Hard to say what category this falls under. Some argue this is peak “tumblrina” (someone who’s a chronic Tumblr user) and others may say this is singer-songwriter at its best. Regardless, Fetch The Bolt Cutters, like Sawayama, is surely an album for [Uran’s] books. I think the driving pianos and lyrical content would strike a chord with her. But this genre as a whole can at times be a bit chill. I’m reminded of artists like Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles and can’t help but feel like they’re the perfect artists to play at work because the songs are generally inoffensive, and also relaxing enough to induce productivity. I say this to sort of explain, why I think this fits her because while I’ve talked a bit about more intense, rock-oriented songs, I’m not saying that’s all she enjoys, she can get into more “easy on the ears” stuff!

For a somewhat similar vibe and for the tumblrinas, I picked “Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart” by Mitski and Sky Ferreira’s “Everything Is Embarrassing”

To Conclude

Like I mentioned earlier, these are all just my opinions, and they aren’t stagnant either. The more I listen and expose myself to, the more my thoughts may change. Perhaps I might come back to this in a year from now and think, “damn, what was I thinking?” But that’s the beauty of having headcanons! The fact that you can modify or improve upon them at any time means they’re ever-changing and always leaving with something new and exciting to chew over. So with that being said, I hope these picks got you thinking about your music HCs, or even listening habits. Perhaps, maybe you even left with a new song to bop to, or just something to pass along. Regardless, this was really fun (though just as nerve-wracking) to make, and maybe I’ll follow up with a part 2 if I think of music HCs for more characters!

i do love to improvise, and i do love realistic drama, but i’d prefer out-of-character permission before anything gets way out of hand. i do control how my character acts and what he thinks and says, and wish for no forced motions or putting words in mouths.

i have a very whimsical, formatted way of writing: i write in novella and multiple para. my preferred style is present-tense, third person. sometimes i’m dialogue-heavy. sometimes i use icons, and sometimes i don’t. sometimes a line of dialogue might seem confusing or mushed together for a lyrical word scramble, or my character tends to repeat things already mentioned/translated to him in a reply previous: this is purposeful, and part of a character quirk. i’m more than willing to translate ic babble out-of-character if it’s needed.

i am willing to rp on discord, but since my preferred style is via tumblr, this will only be with mutuals.

SHIPPING

this character flirts. he comments openly of physical, mental, and spiritual beauty, but that never means that I, the writer, am forcing a romantic/etc. relationship. i encourage any and all ic reactions that happen in result.

with shipping, i would like chemistry first and foremost. my character is romantic, but not enough to tie the knot immediately, at least without involved plotting. there will be smut on this blog, but everything is put under a ‘read more’ and will be tagged appropriately. i will not write smut or explicit themes with anyone under 20, & i will block minors.

i have no problem shipping with duplicate characters, or canon characters, so long as the relationship is solid. talk to me ooc! i’m sure we could figure something out.

GENERAL

i have a timeline on my verses page for the three Dragon Age games made by Bioware, in which the main verse of this character is borne. i have played all three games, and i am very diligent over yt playthroughs and thought-provoking meta. the timeline on my verses page does give yearly points over where my character has been, but they are not fixed points. a thread, or an ask, can completely commence whenever, wherever, all depending on the people involved.

this is a lore and irl magick-based blog, which will include blood and drugs and great, mystic topics, with questionable symbolism, nudity, and sexual situations. i will always tag anything not safe for work, but please tell me if i miss a trigger.

You are one of the authors I truly admire. So, I am seeking advice from you. I have problems with starters. Like I have already written the wip but the starting paragraph is still missing. I have tons of prongsfoot wip that are eating dust in my computer because of this 😭 S.O.S pls.

Hi! It's such an honour that you admire my writing :D I understand the frustration that comes with struggling to start chapters/entire works.... honestly, introductions are usually the parts that I spend the most time editing and rewriting because they can be so tricky to get right! When in doubt, I usually do one of the following:

1) Start with descriptions of your opening scene - this can be about the season, the weather, the temperature, even the way light fills the room.

eg. December dissolves soundlessly away, and the new year enters wearing a coat of silver mist and powdery snow. The air feels frozen, holding its breath, and through it all the war rages on like an endless storm.

2) Go straight into the action!

eg. It starts with the knives and the blood in his mouth and a sweaty shirt that sticks to his body when he moves.

3) Dialogue is really fun to start chapters with too, and is an easy way to establish characters/plot early on.

4) Some wishy washy, lyrical prose that helps set the tone of the story. This is usually what I revert to when I can't think of how else to start lol.

eg. Somewhere in that obscure, shadowy state between sleep and awakening. Dreams and daydreams tend to mingle here, and they fill the mind with strange visions, memories, ideas. A voice calling his name. The glimpse of a silhouette in the corner of the eye, in the shape of someone he’d once known. There’s something vaguely familiar about that voice, slotting into his awareness; slick, frictionless, as if it’s always been there, and is only now emerging from the nebulous waters of memory…

she should have definitely whipped out her compact this morning. nothing could have prepared her for seeing the spoiled mama’s boy again. especially when she didn’t have to tend to his needs when his mother was too busy. not her favorite “ perk ” of her apprenticeship. sure, tons of girls would have killed for that position -- but those same girls wanted to marry the sucker. definitely a funny thought.

-- so many things had been ‘funny’ about this interaction. but funny was just a synonym for the strange and unexpected; she hated feeling caught off guard. this feeling was stilled only by the thought that she had the upper hand in the conversation. he couldn’t mock her for working at a place he came to pout. that wasn’t how things worked.

My Fan Autoethnography

For starters, I am currently a fan mostly involved with the Twenty One Pilots (TOP) fan community (some current involvement with Fall Out Boy and Linkin Park, etc.). I interact with posts and follow the band and people related to the band on Instagram and heavily on Twitter/"X". I have a fan account where I post my thoughts about Twenty One Pilots' releases, make and post memes, and talk with fans online. On most nights I listen to "Spaces" on Twitter/"X" where TOP fans speak (like Discord calls) about their love for the band and their music--and about their day, of course. I do not always actually speak in these spaces but I do occasionally if I have time and have the quiet to do so. I mostly interact with fan posts and talk in fan group chats online. I have been a fan ("fanatic?") of this band for 9 years and so far have seen them in concert six times over the years. I plan on seeing them three more times this year in Orlando and in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio (first time doing that). In the past, I had seen them live on two legs of their "Bandito Tour" in 2019, seen them in Atlanta, Georgia on their "Takeover Tour" in 2021, and New York during their "Icy Tour" in 2022. This was due to the fact that they decided to avoid Florida for tours during that entire album cycle... :|

I used to write bits of fanfiction when I was a teenager but I no longer really do that except for a laugh on rare occasion. I do sometimes read fanfiction for enjoyment with other fans. As this band is very lore heavy, I do often watch and read fan theories on social media and YouTube to make sure I understand and I am up-to-date on things. I do 'attempt' to theorize online when I am confident in the implications of a portion of the lore. I rewatch music videos and so on like many of the other fans do to make sure I have picked up on any alternate meanings or lore details that I may not have noticed the first time or four. I connect much of the narrative/lore behind TOP's albums to my own life as they tend to leave room for that.

I have lots of merchandise from TOP (and other bands too!) that consists of about 50 or so T-shirts, all of their albums on CD and most on Vinyl, Funkos, accessories by the band or related to what the band wears, and fanart. I do collect some rarer merchandise like the Blurryface Live vinyl which only had a few hundred copies made when it was first released in 2015. I caught a drumstick during my second time seeing them live. I have collected confetti (referred to as "Trees Confetti" since they always end with that song) from each of the shows I have been to. I have a tattoo that is related to a lyric from a song by TOP and mental health around my wrist. I wholeheartedly believe that if I didn't have this band to cling onto all these years, I would not be here. They definitely were my motivation to get me through my hardships when everything else would get lost. I have a personal attachment to this band as they helped me get through very traumatic moments in my life. Yes, I am one of those fans, deal with it. So, in terms of why people get into fandom and why it means so much to some people, let's just say: I get it.

Analysis questions:

I do believe fandom often has a "us" vs. "them" mentality threaded within it. People identify so dearly to their fandom(s) and the things they like that it does essentially define them as a person or even defines a period of time in their life. As a result of this, fans are very protective as a fandom defines a part of them and their in-group. I have seen this very much upfront in my own fandoms, especially when someone attacks a band or something about them online and everyone is so quick to counter back. Feels like an everyday occurrance we are going after someone who hates on TOP just so they could get more interactions. For me, I have been guilty of doing this at times. Defending. The band and the fans mean so much to me that it feels like I would do anything to prove to someone how great everyone involved is. Unless the band turns out to be bad people then I don't know what I'd do. :| We all have our biases, I guess... 3. Hoo boy! Anonymity definetly gives fans a confidence that may be hard to find in their daily real lives, I can say that much. This leads fans to post things especially without thought of who is seeing it, this includes TOP and the people that surround the band. People post more explicit artwork, make more offensive jokes, and so forth. People have gotten way too comfortable online. That is, before the lead singer, Tyler Joseph, has started liking posts that talk about him when he is not even tagged in them... people are starting to be a little more careful about what they post. We'll see how long that lasts. 5. As the band TOP loves to make up new words, phrases, and symbols that they fill with meaning, fans eat that stuff up. There are words associated with the narrative behind their most recent albums that can be a code or metaphor for parts of people's lives and their mental health. Due to this, fans that have gone deep enough to learn more about these terms that are very specific to the TOP fandom, these words and symbols can bleed into spaces beyond fandom spaces. For instance, Dema is not a real word (not the meaning put out there when you look it up), represents negative places you want to avoid in your mind and self-sabotaging patterns within your life. The phrase "Sahlo Folina" means nothing except what TOP made it mean, the phrase you call out to those around you when you need help, whether that be needing to talk to a friend or seeking out professional help for mental health difficulties. It's acknowledging the importance of getting help when you know it is best for you--taking that leap. Then, there's also always running jokes from interviews and different videos of the band that are shared between the band and the fans that are hilarious to bring up in daily conversation. So, yeah, I do use these phrases or terms commonly said in the fandom in real life too sometimes. It is also cool when I bring these terms up in conversation and someone I didn't know was a fan makes me aware that they are. It's sick.
