Geoguessr Daily Challenge 07/07/2023
Hello! Apparently, today is World Chocolate Day. Do you like chocolate? I like chocolate, definitely one of my favorite things to eat. Very yum!
Unlike chocolate, I dislike people that read these posts before playing the daily challenge by themselves. So don't do it!
Did you like that one? Took me a bit to make it. Anyways, let's go on with the rounds.
Round 1
Tumblr media
Brazil - 629 km - 3281 pts.
Link to location
This makes me think of Brazil. The back of signs being black confirms it for me. I go west at first, but a sign saying that to the east there was an urban limit I turned around. I kept going east but I didn't find anything. I ended up guessing in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, tho it was Minas Gerais. Tbh Minas Gerais made much more sense than my guess.
And it turns out, if instead of turning around I had continued to go west, I would've found a sign with the highway number and confirmation that we weren't too far from the border between Minas Gerais and São Paulo. Also the name of a city nearby. Seeing that sign would've possibly made this round a 5k, or close at least.
Round 2
Tumblr media
Senegal - 70 km - 4770 pts.
Link to location
There are rifts in the sky, which confirms Senegal for me (in previous days we also saw them in Albania and Montenegro, but within Africa they're unique to Senegal). I went south for a while, and I encountered a sign that mentioned a village called "Keur Samba Kane". I have no idea where that would be. I decide to turn around and go north instead, and I find another sign. Sadly, time is running out so I cannot really use any important info it might have. I just guess somewhere in Senegal where it makes sense to me.
Round 3
Tumblr media
Albania - 145 km - 4537 pts.
Link to location
I go down the road. I see the cars have license plates with two blue stripes instead of just one, which implies either Italia or Albania. Street sign uses the word "rruga", which means road/street in Albanian. Also, there are rifts in the sky, though I never looked up so that hint doesn't matter. I keep going down the road in search for more clues, and eventually hit a bigger road. But sadly I cannot find anything (I might be blind here and missing something, not 100% sure). End up guessing in the capital, turns out to be another city called Gjirokastër, way in the south.
Round 4
Tumblr media
Thailand - 639 km - 3258 pts.
Link to location
This felt like Cambodia to me, though I was considering Thailand as well. I wasn't able to find any clues throughout the whole round. I guessed in Cambodia. I went east in this round, but if I had gone west, I would've very easily found a sign with Thai text on it.
Round 5
Tumblr media
Malaysia - 1.5 km - 4995 pts.
Link to location
At first I was thinking this might be Hong Kong, but I went down the road and I saw a Malaysian style street sign. It mentions a city called Batu Ferringhi. I also notice the sea is to the north. I look for the city throughout the northern coast of Malaysia, but cannot find it. I remember that I should also check some islands so I look in Penang Island, and I find it on its northern coast. I try to look for the place where we started but cannot, but I'm at least happy with getting the right city.
Final score
20841 pts.
Tons of mistakes in a lot of places. At least I got lucky in Malaysia.
Hope you enjoyed this post! Have a nice day and enjoy your chocolate! Goodbye!

I know how much you love me. I am so aware of it. Nurin bukan being ungrateful, nurin cuma ada problem dengan being rejected. I tend to overthink and all the negative thoughts akan cover the other facts.
I cannot think straight. Fikiran nurin bercampur-aduk dan nurin rasa sangat serabut. Obviously faiz akan rasa, oh faiz tak sangka reaction faiz will lead me to behave this way. Sebab for u, this is not big (?). Idk from ur pov bcs kita orang berbeza. Cara faiz lain, cara nurin lain. And ofc there’s nothing you can do except saying sorry sebab benda dah jadi.
I kept thinking how unwanted I am right now bcs bila nurin flashback the night when I said I wanna go back untuk jumpa what I called home, one of them just being quiet (this was when i plan to go back on the 9th-19th nov and pru date hasn’t been decided). At first I thought money constraints. Dan nurin obviously dah cek flight pen-kul, vice versa. The average was 500myr at that time. When I was planning all that, nurin realized your face and you did not feel as excited as I was. That was why I stopped and be realistic that it’s not going to happen. At that time, nurin fikir, oh faiz can’t decide bcs dia tak sure apa jadi dgan kerja. Probably he was busy and need a time to rest. But bila nurin fikir balik… betul ke faiz genuinely suka nurin? I thought you won’t care about anything else if you know you’re going to meet someone that you love. At least tu apa yang nurin rasa sbab nurin exactly feel the same thing.
The second time, when I said I wanna go back again, and this time bila hujung tahun bcs nurin plan nak balik tgt dgan ibu. I was as excited as always bcs yes, nurin dapat jumpa faiz sbab nurin plan nak pergi penang jalan2 kat sana. I didn’t expect you to tag along sbab i will be with ibu. I am aware of the possibility untuk faiz balik jb sbab waktu tu obviously new year eve dan akan dapat lama cuti. What i was expecting was for you to say, oh faiz might be not be at pen sebab long holiday tapi kita boleh work on something?
Honestly, I am willing to go to JB or PEN for a day trip if faiz have time/ money constraints. I mean… I’ve missed you so much to the point yang I am willing to do anything untuk jumpa faiz 😀 i was expecting the same from u sebab I thought you feel the same way as I did. Maybe it’s not your priority to meet me even though faiz do miss me. Idk I can’t read u.
And now apa yg nurin nak? What do u think can help me feel at ease? I need the reassurance. Never once bila nurin cakap pasal i want to meet you, bila nurin confront semalam about what I actually feel, faiz reply balik, i do want to see u too. Pls come home bcs I don’t want to be in ldr anymore. That was why I verified my wild assumptions yang I am unwanted at the moment..😊
nurin tekad untuk taknak balik anytime soon sebab nurin rasa, better nurin tak encounter ni lagi dan faiz tak perlu rasa awkward bila nurin bring this up again. But nurin tiada kuasa untuk menentukan. Nurin hanya mampu berusaha dan apa yang mendorong nurin untuk bangun harini is that thoughts. I need to get a good job that can secure my life here so that I won’t be going back anytime soon. Even if Nurin ada plan untuk balik my sbab if nurin nak extend visa. i want to do ielts/ med checkup there. Tbh I don’t have any plan to bagitahu faiz in advance. You only will know from my stories dan nurin takkan bring the topic untuk jumpa awak. Well that’s my plan but nurin kan lalang. Nurin selalu kalah dan telan ludah sendiri, muka tembok and the possibility untuk ajak jumpa tu ada. But i hope in the future and if this is happening, i am strong enough to not say that dan tengok what is your reaction again. I will be absolutely devastated if faiz tak show any effort and at that time nurin maybe akan tawar hati dengan faiz.
The other possibility, nurin balik awal and maybe berehat/ kerja dekat malaysia. Nurin honestly taknak option ni tapi if it’s happening, I won’t say anything too. I just want to see how are u going to react dan tengok apa yang faiz akan buat. Will you ever asked to meet? With my situation and thoughts now, nurin confident faiz akan ajak after sebulan dua dan tak rasa keen untuk jumpa nurin asap (please deny this).
But anyway, in conclusion nurin rasa terkilan, dan yes, sangat sangat sangat sedih sampai it distracts my focus and makes me very demotivated. Nurin menunggu faiz comfort dan kasi nurin the reassurance yang it’s not a one sided thing (walaupun i know it’s a one sided thing, judging from how you react lepas nurin bgtahu). I want you to say, please whatever you’re thinking right now is not true dan faiz minta maaf sebab kecewakan nurin. I didn’t mean to hurt you dan faiz nak sangat jumpa nurin and I exactly feel the same way as you do. We will work and figure this thing together but if nurin balik anytime soon, i will try my very best and plan to clear my schedule untuk nurin. I can’t wait to meet you again :)
Hmmm… even this dialogue pun nurin sendiri yg create untuk soothe and comfort my own feelings… betapa tak malunya nurin untuk plea faiz macamni

What we did in our last day in Penang - and some tips!
We've had to come to terms with the idea that in travelling, plans won't always go your way and you won't be able to always see and do what you were expecting. As David told you, we were not able to go up Penang Hill on Tuesday, and even though Wednesday's weather was looking up, we didn't really have enough time to traipse up the hill if we didn't want to risk missing our train. I was quite put out by this but we've got a long, long way to go and I'm trying to be better at just 'letting things to'.
As such we've spent today doing a big ol' cultural tour of Penang, which I'm very grateful for. We had Nasi Kandar in the morning, which is a Malay-Indian dish that originated in Penang - one was plenty to share. We then made our way to the Peranakan House/Museum, one of the last of it's kind. By the photos you will see that this group of people, the Nyonya, were extremely wealthy and lived in opulence during the time of British colonialism. Nonyas were ethnically Chinese people who came to Penang primarily to set up businesses in tin mining, and influenced the culture and the food massively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
We're in only stop 2, so my opinion might be swayed later on, but Penang so far is the most culturally diverse place I've been to. It strikes me how religious people are, and how three different religious and ethnic groups literally live door to door. The best thing is how their different foods are mixing together, making Penang one of the best food capitals in South East Asia.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I'm not sure it comes across clearly, but just imagine an island where the opening times, business customs and practices very wildly from shop to shop. One place would be open from 7am to 2pm, and the stall next door would open from 4pm to 9pm. This random shop would open from 10am to 1pm, and this restaurant that Google claims is open has been closed for 3 weeks due to lack of staff. A bit of a culture shock for A type people perhaps.
Then imagine traiditonal heritage houses with wooden shutters that hang over the pavement - pavement which is always obstructed by motorcycles, men on chairs cutting keys, hawker stalls or groups of young people drinking Kopi (coffee). You end up having to walk on the road most of the time, where motorcycles and cars swerving around you.
That was all Georgetown, however, all of Penang is not like this. In fact I do wish (and would recommend) that we'd rented a car and perhaps stayed somewhere outside central Georgetown - that way we could explore more of the island and really get a feel for what life there was like.
Today, we didn't have another precarious walk next to a busy roads (that's 2/3) , but instead made our way to Fort Corwallis to see this gem of British heritage. As with all old forts, it was boring, but it was 5rm (which is basically 40p) and had a couple hours to kill. You can at least experience some of that cooling sea breeze as you walk around, and see some gorgeous sights of mainland Malaysia.
Today I typed up: how do people get used to the humidity in south east asia. The answer: go to places with AC, don't walk in the middle of the day, and drink a lot of water. Thanks Google! David's answer is just shrugging and saying he's not sweating that much and that "actually, I'm at a nice temperature" because he's got better genes than me. Thanks mum and dad.
Our last stop of the day before hawker noodles and a ferry back to Butterworth - by the way, the ferry takes 10 minutes. Maybe before there were longer, older ferries that took 30 minutes, well, no longer. Do not, I repeat, do not, leave your hostel early in anticipation that the ferry will take half an hour or you will have to sit and wait for your train in Butterworh KTM in a waiting room WITH NO AIRCONDITIONER AND ABSOLUTELY NO SNACKS OR DRINKS. Sorry, it was a frustrating afternoon. But if you have spare time before your train from Butterworth, please mill about in Penang Sentral or you will be sitting there, in your sweat, thinking about how nice the Northern Line air would be right now.

So that wraps up our time in Penang... here's the juicy goss and some tips for Penang.
Where did we stay: The Frame Guesthouse
How long for: 3 nights, 10th to 13th July.
Review: We stayed in a double room with the shared bathroom. The guesthouse isn't really a hostel as there's 0 social vibe and a suspicious absence of staff, but it's also not a hotel. It's a calm, comfortable place to stay very close to all the action in Georgetown. It's also cheap, and the bathrooms and room are in good condition.
Tips for anyone wanting to visit Penang:
- Not many places take card: take cash out in the airport. There's only one ATM for some reason in the airport, but a fair few around town. Also, if asking for it, call it 'ATM' as folks have no idea what a 'cash point' is.
Tumblr media
- Take buses if you haven't rented a motorcycle or a car. A lot of people go around Georgetown by car or motorcycle, but if you're not going to do that, make sure you always have as close to the exact change as possible for the buses. The buses are fast, go to the main places in the island, and blast their AC.
- The Penang Hill or National Park are definitely not 3-4 hour activities. Between the time it takes you to get there and back, plus walking around, experiencing it, potentially snacking... it'll take the bigger portion of a day.
- It's a good place to get your laundry done as it's quick and cheap!
- It's also very cheap to eat here if you stick to local food (whether that's stalls in the street or restaurants). Like in most countries we're planning on visiting, Western food and drink is subsantially more expensive. For breakfast, have Kopi Tiam and Kaya toast instead of the capuccino and bagels. Your budget will thank you.
Tumblr media
Besides, who goes to the other side of the world to eat bagels?!
Over and out, Mariola

The Ultimate Guide to Instant Noodles
Tumblr media
A variety of instant noodles from different countries
How to mash-up, deconstruct, and altogether upgrade the versatile staple of dorm room dining
As a semi-professional noodle slurper and collector, I’ve eaten hundreds of noodles in my life, but I have a particular soft spot for one type, specifically: the instant kind. You know, those hard squiggly bricks of dried, fried noodles with accompanying seasoning packets that have long been the foundation of the American collegiate diet. Since the pandemic started, I’ve been showing off my impressive collection of instant noodles to my friends on FaceTime like a YouTube beauty guru flaunting their makeup stash.
I love instant noodles for many reasons: They have a nearly indefinite shelf life; they are an easy breakfast, snack, or — with the right bolstering — a full meal; and, they come in a panoply of shapes, textures, flavors, and colorful packaging styles. But while there is nothing wrong with eating instant noodles according to the instructions, it’s their versatility that’s made me a devoted fan. Here’s how to mash-up, deconstruct, and upgrade the dorm room staple.
1. Load up on protein
Yes, many instant noodles come with their own packets of dehydrated vegetable or meat flavoring, but they rarely provide much real taste and add zero in the way of texture. Supplementing your own additional proteins will do a lot to make your instant noodles more satisfying and nutrition-rich. Try simple items like ground meat, sausage, tofu, and leftover fried chicken — or my personal favorite ramen topping, pork char siu. Meat shortage got ya down? Just crack an egg. You can stir it right in to create an egg-drop soup effect, or poach the egg gently in the soup broth to enjoy breaking the creamy yolk.
Tumblr media
Chicken-flavored ramen with garlicky sautéed kale, roasted chicken legs, and carrots.
2. Go big with toppings
Going nuts with the add-ons at ramen restaurants can mean spending $30 on a bowl of noodles (toppings normally cost between $1 and $3 each.) But at home, you can have as many toppings as the inventory of your fridge’s produce drawer allows: scallions, corn, mushrooms, kale, you name it. Not sure about what to do with all those weird greens in your CSA farm box? Add them to your instant noodles! Fact: There is no such thing as a lousy topping for instant noodles.
3. Deconstruct everything
Each element of the instant noodle package is a multi-purpose cooking superstar. The seasoning packets add a pop to stir-fried vegetables. Broken into bits, the uncooked noodles are an excellent crunchy topping for a salad or even another non-instant pasta dish. Do yourself a favor and add some ramen seasoning to mac and cheese, or how about using those instant noodles to make buns for an at-home ramen burger?
4. Switch up the liquid
To deepen the character of the soup, try cooking the noodles in vegetable or chicken broth instead of plain water. There are plenty of wilder recipes out there, including this one I’m skeptical of that uses milk, but homemade stock is a safe jumping off point.
5. Mash-up different styles
Mixing different instant noodle styles and seasoning packets is a culinary art form in itself, and can have big payoff. Jjapaguri (also called ram-don), the famous dish from the Oscar-winning movie Parasite, is actually just a hybrid of two different kinds of instant noodles — Neoguri and Jjappaghetti — and has become one of Korea’s national dishes. The magic comes from the mixing of Neguri’s spicy seafood powder with Jjappaghetti’s savory black bean powder, which ignites a lethal umami bomb. But jjapaguri is just the start. Try mixing Neoguri and curry noodles to create an exuberant, spicy curry broth. Combining super spicy noodles with something cheesy is also 100 percent never a bad idea.

The Ones to Know
Here, then, are some of the best instant noodles to stock up on, categorized by whether or not they’re “brothy” (the noodle soup kind) or “saucy” (brothless noodles with a separate sauce).
BROTHY
MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle If you love Penang curry, try adding this noodle to your cart. These wildly popular Malaysian instant noodles are considered some of the best in the world on this heavily opinionated ranking. Three whole flavor pouches — one of them is a paste — make for a deep, coconut-y taste and hearty portion size that you rarely get from instant noodles. Add toppings like fried tofu or prawns.
Neoguri, Spicy Seafood Udon Noodles Neoguri, a Korean word for raccoon dog (neither a raccoon nor a dog; discuss), has been my top choice for ramen since I started slurping noodles at the age of three. This beloved Korean instant noodle is known for two things: thick udon-like noodles and a spicy seafood broth with actual dried seafood. It’s fantastic with any fishy topping or add-ins.
Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup Shin Ramyun might be the very first Korean instant noodle brand, as well as one of the easiest to find internationally: I still remember the exciting moment when I found Shin Ramyun in a random gas station in Alabama. It’s known for its spicy broth, and doubles as an excellent noodle for Korean ramen beginners. Top this with a slice of American cheese to tone down the spice and pump up the greatness.
Prima Taste Laksa Coconut Curry Lamian Noodles This Singaporean instant noodle inspired by traditional laksa has a paste sachet that can and should be used for stir-frying vegetables, too. The noodles are rounder and less wavy than others, and the white powder adds the signature creaminess.
Mama Noodles Thai cooking doesn’t shy away from acid, and neither do these Thai instant noodles, with just the right balance of acidic and salty flavors. The wavy noodles and the powdery seasonings make a great snack — though it may not be hearty enough to be a standalone meal. Beef it up with a hard-boiled egg and other vegetable toppings, like scallions.
Sapporo Ichiban Tokyo Chicken Momosan Ramen Think Japanese shoyu ramen, in instant form: salty, slightly smokey, and clean tasting. It’s great with plain old white-meat chicken breast — which is hard to say about anything, really.
Paldo Gomtang Oriental Style Noodles with Beef Soup Base Not all Korean instant noodles are spicy! This mild, creamy Korean noodle soup is inspired by gomtang, or beef bone broth. It has an intense beefiness and is excellent with hearty greens like cabbage or scallions. Add some ground beef to make it more filling.

Nongshim, Jjapaghetti (Noodle Pasta with jjajang Sauce) “On Sundays, I’m the chef for Jjapaghetti” has been a Korean catchphrase for more than a decade. A combination of two dishes — jajangmyun (black bean noodles) and spaghetti— this saucy Korean instant noodle is also what spurred the ram-don trend after its crucial role in Parasite. The accompanying savory black bean sauce is all it really needs, though I highly recommend a luxe drizzle of truffle oil, too.
Indomie Mi Goreng Instant Stir Fry Noodles If you haven’t tried this Indonesian instant noodle, stop what you’re doing and fix that immediately. The package comes with a liquid seasoning mix of savory onion-flavored oil, sweet-spicy chili sauce, and sweet soy sauce, creating a salty-and-sweet coating for the wavy noodles. Any optional toppings like grilled steak or boiled eggs are just gravy.
Samyang Extra Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen Are you up for #FireNoodleChallenge? Join the leagues of people who’ve filmed themselves slurping these dangerously spicy noodles. There are multiple flavor options available, from carbonara to curry, and all of them equally fiery. Cover this with lots of mozzarella cheese to tone down the heat to the point where you might actually enjoy it.
Tseng Noodles Scallion With Sichuan Pepper Flavor This Taiwanese instant noodle is all about texture. Its curling, knife-cut-like strands are a perfect match for the sauce. There are many different flavors, besides this scallion one, such as black sesame and shallots. Depending on the sauce, the noodles textures vary. Think of this as gourmet-tier, since it costs slightly more than other noodles, but it’s totally worth the splurge.
Paldo Bibim Myun Cold Noodle The spicy, tangy, sweet sauce of these Korean noodles will wake up even the dullest of palates. Cook the noodles until they’re just al dente, or still a little firm, then rinse them under cold water to get rid of any residual starch and achieve peak bounce and chew. The sauce packet is an excellent salad dressing, too. Add some chopped cucumber and hard-boiled egg for a clutch midnight snack, or add some ice cubes for a cooling summer treat.
Mom’s Dry Noodle Sichuan Spicy The Taiwanese knife cut-style noodles cling to the oily, spicy sauce for maximum slurpability. Top with a fried egg or fried cubed tofu and you can almost pretend you’re at a restaurant.

HEART SPEAK
Love cannot live where there is no trust, and not trusting someone you love is possibly one of the worst things to happen when it comes to love. Trusting is hard, knowing who to trust is even harder. But to regain broken trust in a relationship is the hardest of them all. Trust is the ultime foundation of any relationship. If you can’t trust someone that you love, you can’t have their respect and loyalty. So when you have broken your partner’s trust by cheating on them, do know that you aren’t just betraying them, you’re also disrespecting them. Isn’t it funny though? The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them. But when you have finally trusted them enough, they just decided to betray your trust. And the worst part of it? It seemed like it was your mistake, and not theirs, for trusting them. I have always believed that “I trust you” is a greater compliment than “I love you.” Why? Simply because it’s easier to say you love someone rather than to say you trust them. Trust is the most sacred fundamental of a relationship and once it’s broken, it’s considered gone. There are a lot of reasons as to why people cheat on their partner. But whatever the reason is, it’s not okay to cheat on your partner, especially when you know you are in a good relationship. However, we are all just human beings and no one of us is perfect, right? Hence, if your cheating partner decided to ask your for a second chance, the first thing that you should know is that things will never be the same again. Rebuilding a broken trust in a relationship is hard, but if the two of you are committed in making it work, it can be done. Like every other thing in a relationship, rebuilding trust is a process that requires the effort from both parties involved. The offender of the broken trust and the one whose trust is broken must work together if the two of you really want to fix your relationship. So before you decide to give your relationship another chance, please ask yourself these: “Does this person worth it? Does this relationship worth another go?” If “Yes, it does” is your answer, you can go on. But if your answer is “No”, there’s no point in reading what’s next.
THE CHEATED :-
Let’s start with you, the one who cheated. I believe that you really regret what you have done and you want to regain your partner’s trust. So please bear in mind that even if your partner says they forgive you, they can never forget what you did to them. Are we clear on that?
So what you need to do? Come clean about everything. Tell them what they deserve to know. Be more transparent to them, because remember, hiding things is what caused you to be in this situation now. Be completely honest with them, admit all your mistakes and wrongdoings.
They might be mad at you when you have done telling them the ugly truths. They might be crying or distancing themselves from you for some time, but whatever their reactions are, you just have to learn to accept it. You need to let them process their disappointment and pain. And of course, genuinely apologize to them about what you have done. Don’t just say sorry, show them that you’re really sorry for hurting them. Show them that you’re changing for better. Actions speak loudest when words mean nothing. So be consistent in your actions from now on. When apologizing, avoid putting the blame on your partner. Even though it is true that you cheated on them because of the lack of sexual or emotional satisfaction in your relationship, but the fault is all yours, not theirs - you are the one who chose to cheat on them. You should have told them your feelings back then, but you decided to keep them hidden. So if you want to make it work this time, be sure not to repeat the same mistakes you did. Some things are better left unsaid sure, but most things are better left said. Keep that in mind. And bear in mind that it won’t be a one time thing to ask them for their forgiveness. You need to constantly asking for forgiveness in various ways you have hurt them. You aren’t only destroying their trust when you cheated on them, you’re also destroying them. Don’t forget that.
RECEIVING END OF THE BROKEN TRUST:-
Now let’s talk about you, the receiving end of the broken trust - the one who was cheated on. What do you have to do to restore your trust in your partner? Can you trust them again? Well, trusting someone take years to build and rebuilding trust might take longer time than that. Forgiveness is the most vital step in restoring your trust to your partner. If your partner has showed their remorse and constantly asking for your forgiveness, you need to learn to forgive them. You can never forget what they did, but you can always forgive them for that. However, if your partner do not want to take responsibility for their actions and admit their wrongdoings, I don’t think it’s wise to give them another chance in the relationship. But it’s entirely up to you, really. You can always forgive someone who doesn’t ask to be forgiven.
Like every other situation in life, you can have forgiveness in your heart for the person and their wrong doing even if there is no apology. Because only by forgiving, you can move forward without harbouring any grudge, hatred, resentment and pain. Forgive, and you will be free. Next, let your partner knows how they have hurt you. Express your feelings to them in an open and meaningful conversations. Do not begin the blame game during these conversations, it can only hurt you more. Remember, both of you want to make this work, so work on it maturely. During these conversations, focus on what is, not on what was. Discuss on what is required to heal the relationship, and request what you need to get back to a healthy relationship. Talk about what would help to rebuild the trust and set reasonable expectations to regain trust. After you’ve done coming to terms about what is needed to move forward in the relationship, be sure to heal and forgive yourself. When trust is betrayed, it’s normal to feel like you aren’t good enough for your partner that they decided to cheat on you. But stop blaming yourself. You must pursue ways to heal yourself emotionally and mentally, because that is the only way for your relationship to move on to a deeper and healthier state. The relationship can never be healed if you aren’t healed. So go heal yourself, no matter how long it takes. Both of you also need to be patient in rebuilding trust into your relationship. Don’t pressure the other person into showing you more trust. Trusting someone after they have broken it in the past is hard, but if you’re willing to give it your best effort, it will all be okay. You know how people always said “once a cheater, always a cheater”, right? But people aren’t always right. Some cheaters can change, for better. And sometimes it takes the right person to make them change into a loyal lover. So if you still want them, have some faith in them. And to those who broke their partner’s trust and are now given a chance to regain it, do not take it for granted. Remember, trust is earned, respect is given and loyalty is demonstrated. Betrayal of any one of those is to lose all three. All the best in making it work.

MARCH 2022
I just love the header image, love it, love to cherish the words and believe that God has me, God loves, and I hear the new music and dance in the way I never been before.
This year started with a new role at BSF, training, stressful situation, not close any deals yet, frustrated, happy to know more people, cherish some new Korean drama, growth in my relationship with my closed friends, church friends, family, learn to forgive (Gaby) and forget (Ko Jo).
Yes, the last one I intentionally mentioned. Some part of me want to still believe that it would be great and ideal if me as Da Jie and him (Da Ke of the church members) can join together. But as I pray about it, I give myself time (until my 33rd birthday, no greetings then bye) and pray that God will confirm.
-no progress since he requested my insta
-Nat kind of reveal some sides of him
-i see how he’s kind of obsessed with social status, but I guess his circle and work demand
-I don’t see how we will cross the path as God still calls me to be in Bali
Tumblr media
Nevermind, today is actually quite a roller coaster. I was so nervous because my client Anna might want to cancel her purchase while her credit load has already been approved. I prayed on my knee right away, shaking but still trying to negotiate with her. I asked God if it can be smoothen, however I trust that God’s plan is the best. I may hurt and I don’t understand, but let’s see. I believe God doesn’t want me to be nervous and worry.
I tried to clear my head, PMS season, Bali’s heat, rain cancelled my plan to chill at the beach, so I went to Grand Lucky instead.
On my way home, I was thinking to offer the land to other client so maybe I can cancel the deal with Bu Evelin, but it’s not a guarantee that I can’t find another replacement. I was trying to figure out, why I haven’t make any sales since November? Was it because I haven’t visited Papa’s grave? I’m planning to go soon though, now that corona case is under control, I will make time to go to Bandung & Jakarta.
Tumblr media
Anyway, something exciting is here. I think on Feb 17, after spending another loveless valentine and countless of cancelled deals, Ci Maurin whom I met twice on my cousin’s wife funeral & other time at the vila when they visited Bali randomly texted me. Few days after CNY I knew that my cousin told me that Ci Maurin planned to introduce me to her friend. I was just laughing, I thought she’s joking or at the back of my mind, if its her friend, then probably a random 40s guy (maybe already divorce, etc LOL MARSHELLA).  Finally she revealed on that day, the one that she wants to introduce is her client, but happen to be a friend as well since 2 years ago. He is not her age (born in 85 or something) and he is a SINGAPOREAN, walaoweh.. He’s been running business in Indo for a while (same industry as mine which is property), dated Indo girl, know well about this country, lives in Ubud (aren’t they checked all of my list?). I mean the fact that he lives in Bali is already one thing, and he also is in the property industry, so many to talk about leh..
YOU KNOW HOW HAPPY I AM?? Even as I write this, I’m smiling. I just really have a good feeling, and I’m just so so grateful that he is not indonesian huhuhuhuhu I’m sorry Indo guy, I don’t know why, I just feel I don’t fit it. I always wonder how my friends can marry Singaporeans (nadia, lynna, ai may, elaine, titan, and many more), and idk at some point in my life I always bump to Singaporean/Chinese Malaysian (Ms Penny, Marlene, Ai May, Elaine, May Yee, Jamie, Eunice, mom’s aunty in Penang, you name it). And I always feel more belong when I hang out with them than with many other Indo friends.
I know it’s very early to tell, I haven’t even met him yet, but I really have a high hope this time, and I asked God wholeheartedly that this guy will be THE ONE from Him. The first person I told is Michelle (always her), I was so excited on that day because we had a call right after Ci Maurin texted me. I told her, unlike the Koreans, for me a Singaporean would be a perfect match, because they’re banana (appear yellow but white on the inside), they’re (esp their family) more open minded, they speak english, many of them are Christians (quite common), and still hold on their Eastern (overseas-Chinese) culture as well.
And today the reason why I smiled, because finally the day is set. I will meet him on March 25, 4PM at Ci Maurin’s office. The reason it takes a while is because he is still in Singapore since CNY, and will only return mid March. But that’s okay, so I feel like I have enough time to prepare as well.
Btw I’m so grateful for Ci Maurin, though only met me twice, but have a good-pure intention to set me up with her good friend (lil brother) and willing to make such effort. Finger crossed, perhaps the paintings of Marina Bay Sands & China and the book ‘Sons of the yellow emperor’ that Marlene introduced to me these past years will make sense, and I can testify how God is preparing my heart for something new, something exciting, something I’ve been dreaming on. He knows best and I believe ‘YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN KNOWS MUCH BETTER THAN YOU DO, HOW TO GIVE GOOD THINGS TO HIS CHILDREN’. AMEN. The rest of other criteria, I surrender it all to the God who owns our both lives.
And dude, I hope that I can also be an answer to your prayer. I don’t know your name, but I’m praying for you. Come back soon and let’s meet!

STORY OF STREETS FOODS
street food identifies and distinguishes territory and tradition, keeping alive one of the most important aspects of local culture, the eating habits of the people.
In more recent times, we have seen an abundance of vehicles springing up near stadiums and concert venues, fairs and markets - vehicles specially adapted to sell drinks and sandwiches, classically with sausage or roast pork, the Italian version of American hot dogs and hamburgers, which themselves descended from the traditions of poor immigrants from Hamburg and Frankfurt.  Today’s street food culture is taking a markedly different route, focusing on the traditional cultural aspect - sometimes a rediscovery - and investing in the quality of increasingly refined products. Paradoxically, this trend for revival comes form the very place that invented junk food - the United States, where the trendiest food trucks are wildly popular among increasingly sophisticated foodies and related media.
“STREET FOOD IS THE TRUE Filipino foods"
The manifesto of today’s Street Food could be “Street food is the true testimony to the identity of a people”. It undoubtedly gauges the depth of traditional food culture, but also measures its ability to continually reinvent itself in the constantly evolving everyday urban jungle, while retaining is roots firmly in the history of a region. In a nutshell, street food has freed itself from prejudice and reclaimed its rightful place in the sun as an expression of culinary civilisation
If you’re familiar with this blog, then you already know how much we love eating local food when we travel. A lot of that traveleating involves street food, which in many countries, has a reputation for being less than sanitary. The Philippines is one of those countries.
Having grown up in Manila, we were conditioned not to eat (too much) Filipino street food because of it’s reputation for being unsafe and unhygienic. If you grew up in Manila, then you’ve probably heard the same urban legends about dirty Pinoy street food. And if you believed those stories like we did, then you’ve probably sworn off street food too.
But if Filipino street foods are supposed to be dirty and dangerous, then why don’t we have any problem eating it abroad? The streets of Hanoi, Penang, and Hong Kong aren’t any cleaner than Manila’s, yet there we are happily slurping bowls of noodles by the side of the road. And not once have we ever gotten sick.
If we have no problem eating it there, then why can’t we eat it here? Have we been unfair to Filipino street food? Are all the stories untrue? Has it all been a conspiracy concocted by some secret society of restaurant CEOs?!
STREET FOOD IN THE PHILIPPINES
1. Balut
I’ve arranged this list in alphabetical order so it’s purely by coincidence that it starts off with one of the most infamous Filipino street foods – balut.
For the uninitiated, balut is a fertilized egg incubated for 14-21 days, boiled, then eaten directly from its shell. It’s typically made with duck eggs, specifically native or Pateros duck eggs, but it can be made with chicken eggs as well if the former isn’t available. When it comes to Filipino street foods fit only for the daring, balut is arguably at the top of the Filipino food chain.
Frankly, I grew up eating balut so I don’t find it the least bit off-putting, but many people do, including Filipinos. Ren for example, loves the “soup” and yolk but she won’t touch the embryo.Depending on how long it’s been incubated before being boiled, you’ll find balut with the embryo in different stages of development. The ideal incubation period is said to be exactly 17 days. At that stage, the embryo is completely soft and unrecognizable save for its developing feathers. But I have gotten much bigger embryos that already resemble ducklings! Those typically have harder bones and beaks and are more difficult to stomach, even for seasoned balut eaters. Not to gross you out (if I haven’t already), but I do remember eating one ,
Isaw refers to barbecued pig or chicken intestines that are thoroughly cleaned before being boiled, skewered, and grilled. Pictured below on the left is the pork isaw while to its right is the chicken. Like the other grilled skewered dishes on this list, isaw is typically served with a spiced vinegar dip.
Like walkman, Filipinos have funny colloquial names for chicken and pork isaw as well. Chicken isaw is also referred to as “I.U.D.” because it’s said to resemble older designs of intra uterine devices. Pork isaw is called “mag wheels” because it looks like…well, mag wheels!
8. Kwek Kwek / Tokneneng
Kwek kwek is a hard-boiled quail egg that’s coated with an orange batter and deep-fried until crispy. They’re pretty much exactly how you’d imagine them to taste, like eggs deep-fried in tempura batter.
But I have gotten much bigger embryos that already resemble ducklings! Those typically have harder bones and beaks and are more difficult to stomach, even for seasoned balut eaters. Not to gross you out (if I haven’t already), but I do remember eating one with an already developed beak. It was hard so I had to spit it out.
Balut is often seasoned with salt and/or a chili, garlic, and vinegar mixture, but I’ve always eaten it as is. We Filipinos know how off-putting balut can be for many tourists, so we get a kick out of challenging them to eat it. Most chicken out.
You might also come across a version of balut called “penoy”. These are the balut eggs that don’t properly develop after 9-12 days. Balut penoy is like a hard-boiled egg with no separation between the yolk and egg white, kind of like a semi-scrambled egg still in its shell. Personally, I prefer the real thing.
2. Banana Q / Kamote Q
Unlike balut that can be intimidating even to Filipinos, Banana Q (or cue) isn’t scaring anyone away. It’s a skewered deep-fried sweet plantain coated in caramelized brown sugar. Equally popular as a Filipino street food and as a snack made at home, it’s something that many Filipinos grew up eating.
Ren didn’t touch the balut but here she is all giddy to eat the banana q. As described, many Filipinos grew up eating banana q at home for merienda (midday snack) or as an after-school snack, so it’s something many of us think of fondly. It’s a comforting Filipino snack that brings us back to our childhood.
The bananas used to make banana q are called saging na saba or saba bananas. They’re frequently used in Filipino cooking to make desserts like turon, halo-halo, minatamis na saging (banana with caramel sauce), and maruya (banana fritter). They’re even used to add sweetness to savory dishes like arroz a la cubana and pochero.
This may sound odd to some westerners, but we Filipinos have a type of ketchup made with saba bananas. Called banana ketchup, it’s a sweetened version of regular ketchup that was invented during WWII due to a lack of tomatoes. Today, it’s arguably more popular than tomato ketchup and is a perfect condiment to oily, deep-fried foods.
Kamote q is a version of banana q made with camote or sweet potato.

3. Buko
Buko is the Tagalog word for young coconut. I’ve lived in the Philippines most of my life and I never thought of buko as a type of Filipino street food, but I guess you can say it is. Aside from being used in Filipino cooking, fresh buko sold in wooden pushcarts is a common sight in the Philippines, even in big cities like Manila.
Buko vendors will hack the coconut in front of you and serve it with a straw so you can drink it on the spot. If you don’t want a whole coconut, many vendors also offer buko juice made with condensed milk and strands of freshly grated coconut meat.
I actually prefer the latter because it’s usually served chilled, but I find fresh buko juice to be refreshing even at room te

Stop 2 : Penang! I didn't know much to anything about this island off the coast of Malaysia before entering the country. A bit of cursory Wikipedia research labelled this part of town as The Silicon Valley of the East, but simultaneously a backpackers paradise of unspoilt old town and charm filled cheap cafes. Like if Starbucks moved in but was best pals with your local neighbourhood cake shops instead of mercilessly grinding them to dust. I was excited for this; sounded like a vibe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arriving we've been greeted much more by the latter old town sort of thing, given we are staying in that part of town. This is the only kinda place where i've seen the "people on bikes" graffiti genre veer as far one way as Bansky and as far the other way as "just put mr Bean on the bike and more people will stay at the hotel". It's a beautiful place. Slow. Feels almost too quiet right now but this is a world only just post COVID. There's some way to go before what's 'normal' is back I guess. Places like this got hit bad by having to close their business for 3 years. It shows, there's a lot of shut up places. Man, it's not even just Covid, you can see the effects of the 2004 Tsunami out by the beaches. It's dumb to expect recovery from this stuff quickly and I'm glad they're open up again and the money comes back to rebuild. I'm kinda grateful to be here at all.
One thing I am not grateful for. Durian. I once left a bag of potatoes in a cupboard over a kettle for close to a year in a student flat. Over time the steam liquidised the potatoes as they gradually putrefied naturally. The smell at the end of it was close to something between death and a deep wet mould. Durian is the only thing close to that smell, and it is everywhere. It's actually banned in many public places yet appears so delicious inside that despite these things being on every street corner, & this making you appreciate how bad the whole world must smell in the Walking Dead, everyone love the taste too much to choose not to have corpse stench lightly permeate the air at all times. Good for them. I admire that mental strength. I hate durians.
Tumblr media
We did domestic duties early on arrival. Getting the washing done, scouting around and sitting down at Tek Sen for some really good Chinese food. The adaptation from Singapore dollars to Malaysian Ringitt has taken some brain adjustments that's hard to demonstrate without reconverting everything into pounds and realising a beer now costs £1.80, not £7. A meal £2.82, not £20+. The budget might be ok after all. It's taken a lot of work and heart rending "oh god, we need a cheap day tomorrow, this is going to tip is past our average" before realising that a 90 ringitt meal is £16 and no, it's fine, you probably spend that on an aperol Spritz on a bad day back home. Chill.
Day 2 was eventful. We took the bus out to the national park via a breakfast stop off at the Toh Soon cafe. Toh Soon was a lovely little spot, but with a hell of a queue early in the morning. I felt a pang of home-sickness in that queue when the Malaysian man in front of us shouted "FUCKS SAKE" all of a sudden, apropos of nothing. It's a curiously English phrase when I think about it. I don't think i've ever heard it in another accent before.
Tumblr media
We got a portion each of Nasi Lemak and Kaya Toast on a couple of different breads, washing everything down with the customary condensed milk laden coffee that I still can't shake the feeling is going to give me diabetes by the end of this trip. All excellent, still not a bad meal here. Because South East Asia is possibly situated next to some great cosmic steam vent, I immediately needed more fluids before the hour long bus ride so we dropped into 7/11. The door played what, on first listen might sound to the corporate morons who decreed this inflicted punishment on the poor staff who have to listen to this song everyday, to be a 'cheerful welcoming melody'. I heard this cheerful welcoming melody 6 times while in the shop buying one drink for something like 5 minutes. Some quick sums; and the poor man working behind the counter is probably there for a minimum of 8 hours a day. He must have heard that welcome jingle a minimum of 576 times in a day. If he works all week, even if it's a 5 day week, he will hear that jingle 2880 times. The suicide rate is remarkably low when considering this.
We hurtled onwards to Penang park after this interlude at 800 mph on the public bus. Seeing corners only as challenges to travel faster. When arriving, we geared up for a big hike (1 hour 15!!) to Turtle Beach, or Pentai Kerachut. We booked a return boat trip, because we're all allowed our little luxuries (and they take you to see the monkeys, come on). Walking through the jungle, you're hit by a wall of humidity and ants. You experience that true sweat that is only reserved for humid climes. The kind where things like your lip and the top of your arms even start sweating when you forgot they could. It's a lovely hike all things considered though, not too strenuous and some gorgeous beach and jungle scenery before you reach the meromictic lake where freshwater meets salt and the two are too different in density to mix. The colours are gorgeous and if you're lucky you'll see them form whirlpools twirling, ever twirling towards freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We got out past the lake onto the beach and played our new favourite beach game "why can't I swim here", is it something that can kill me? Raw sewage? Perhaps lethal waves or a small undersea cliff? Well today it was multiple of these, so we stayed out of the water and continued on to the turtle sanctuary, seeing and reading about the egg laying cycles of the giant turtles on these beaches who need utter quiet, calm and peace, without any bright light to lay their eggs, or they'll simply turn back around and return to the see if they're disturbed. If you lived 100+ years, you'd think time was on your side too.
One of the things I have noticed dating a Spaniard, is that, there's a hell of a lot of Spaniards. I have found them as far aflung as the Premier Inn near Birmingham International, Westminster, local bakers in small english towns, and now here, on a boat in the middle of Malaysia, a group of 5 Catalonians became immediate best friends with Mariola because this is what Spaniards do. They were great company on the way to Monkey beach. Much friendlier than the second boat where I was nearly turfed off by a lady who insisted she had booked the entire boat privately for her family. Ah well. If Brits can do anything well, it's obstinately stand your ground when a small piece of official paper tells you you're in the right. So we stayed on that damn boat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had however spent all of our bus money on crisps on Monkey beach. This was a mistake & one I do not encourage. We needed to walk 5km to various hotels imploring people to try and call us cabs and furiously refreshing Grab. After multiple tries, an argument with 2 bus drivers eating dinner and a short rest in a 5 star hotel car park, we were saved by the lovely valet staff of the hotel Ansanga who managed to find us a cab home. This was 10x more expensive than the bus. Please learn from our mistakes and resist those island crisps. Keep some cash handy at all times!
We rounded off the day once we got back and showered with a late dinner at Tem Xim (Penang surprisingly has pretty limited food options past 9pm.. the local population prefers rising early and eating earlier.. look to eat between 6-8pm for the best options!)
The woman who owns Tem Xim, a thai charcoal bbq joint, is likely on some sort of wall somewhere alongside Mother Theresa, Marie Curie & Florence Nightingale. The woman's an artist at hospitality. She saw two floundering hangry westerners staring at chili sauce in beffudlement as to whether it would blow our face off or not and took pity. She was particularly informative and nice in helping us around the menu and it's one of the better dining experiences I think we'll have all trip not just for the quality of food, but also how genuinely kind everyone was. You can tell she does this a lot by the fact she's racked up 300+ 5* Google reviews, most of which mention her explicitly. Good on ya love, you've got one more from me. Hit up Tem Xim anyone reading this and visiting Georgetown.
Tumblr media
Our last full day took us from our original plans to go to Penang Hill onto the Kek Lok Si temple instead because, oh boy, when it rains here, it rains. We had a pretty fantastic trip around all things considered and it's a stunning temple, only recently built in the 19th century, but built to impress with grand enormous 70ft tall statues, 7 story pagodas and seals of approval from Beijing about its status amongst Chinese temples. It's well worth a visit and if you want to you could combined it with a trip to Penang Hill to get the views quite easily for a jam packed day. We then did the customary 'eat absolutely everything' food tour, hitting up all the local favourites of Wanton Mee, Char Kaoy Teow, Apom, Lok Lok and Cendol because we are those people, and try and keep me away from weird novelty food. I will eat you.
Tumblr media
It's been hard to get away from a fact that Penang doesn't feel quite recovered yet. There's people here, but it feels a bit stunted. Like the energy is yet to return fullly as the place isn't quite full. It's wonderful for a bit of pece and the lack of crowds is something we should be happy about but Georgetown is definitely somewhere I could feel like you could appear, without a purpose, without a clear sense of anything, and have a wicked time simply being. Come for 2 weeks, forget about everything, eat like a king for £3 and forget life happens outside this island. It's back to city life in Kuala Lumpur after this, but i've liked this sleepy little town and recommend it to anyone.

Also can I just say, it's miles harder being a WOC. It feels terribly heavily like you're expected to be both modern and traditional and true to your cultural expectations and heritage all at once. I think of that Nicki Minaj gifset where she goes off about having to be all these things at once - dope, sweet, boss - and you just can't. On my visit to the Peranakan museum in Penang a month ago and when I went by the Peranakan museum here, we're told that back then, girls were taught to sew, that a bride who couldn't sew wouldn't even be able to wear shoes because those were to be made by herself; and that a 'suitable bride' was found by matchmakers by walking along the back alleys where the kitchens let out onto, so that she could listen to the girls making dinner - if you heard a steady pounding of the pestle and mortar, you knew she was a 'good girl', but if you heard an 'anyhow' pounding sound, staccato and unrhythmic, it meant that she was impatient. To be a 'good' daughter or a 'good' woman - sew, cook, be able to keep your household in order, but to excel, do all those things brilliantly, also be educated - music, books, fields like law or medicine or engineering. Be worldly, but not ambitious, be cultured, but not overeager, be refined, but don't be too ostentatious. Know a lot, but don't show off or look as if that's what you're doing, it's unrefined. Be patient and understanding and kind and help - 扶(着) - your husband and family. Take only so much of the leg of pork sent to your family so you don't look greedy. Don't accept red packets of money or gifts without first declining them, preferably at least twice. But also be financially clever, and astute enough to keep your affairs and house running smoothly. But not so much that you interfere or comment on the way your husband handles his finances. Don't be too clever or you're cunning, and don't be too doormat-like or you're useless. There's a scene late in The Empress of China where Mei Niang saves a prince whose horse has gone amok by getting on a horse and riding after him and quickly stabbing the horse in the neck before it threw him off a cliff. Later, when she returns, she says to herself, she shouldn't have gone so far as to bleed the horse, it makes her look 'dangerous'. A man who'd done that would have been rewarded, but she might be punished instead and looked on with suspicion. Be shy but not a prude, be beautiful but hide your face... it's endless. I feel like Mulan at the matchmaker's saying she will never be the daughter her parents want, that she will never bring her family honour. I know I could become a renowned whatever and my mother will still comment on my clothes. Everything compounds, the list of things I should be piles on up. / And - I find myself lying all the time. I lie about where I'm going, I lie about when I'm leaving, I lie about what I'm doing. A man asks me where I'm going at the ferry terminal. I say I'm going back to Singapore; I've only just arrived. I lie about having been in Bintan yesterday and I'm only here a couple hours and it was spontaneous and that's why I don't know anything about the place, I'm just killing time. I lie about what time I'm going back on the ferry. It's like being surveilled non-stop. It is being surveilled non-stop. On the ferry to Batam I was watched all the way through by a man, from the moment I stepped into the departure hall to the Indonesian immigration. I half-thought he'd be standing somewhere waiting to see me when I exited into the terminal. It's hard to be left alone. People follow, people tout, people hound. If I'm honest about going somewhere, god knows if I'll get rid of them; heaven knows if they'll be waiting there for you, if - as I'd know - they'll climb through your window if they know where you live. They're not asking just to leave it; if I say I'm going someplace, they hustle you into a cab and set a price entirely on their terms, once you're already in it. It's second nature now, making up stories; like the way people say they're allergic to some foods just so people will stop trying to make them eat it. No is never enough in this world. 'No' and 'stop' is not enough to make my mother stop judging my choice of clothes; 'no' is seldom enough to get a guy trying to 'offer' you a taxi ride off your back. 'No thank you' was not enough to make an old lady shovelling roses into my arms and trying to make me buy them on the pretext of giving them as a 'gift' and asking for money back in exchange as 'good faith', not until I lost it and yelled so loud the whole street stopped and she was stunned. For all our supposed Asian virtues of being 'modest' especially, we're insanely and absolutely obsessed with what other people are doing, with invading personal space. It's a 'signature' thing of Sg, being 'kaypoh'. It's a crime to be seen naked in your own room but no one complains that the neighbours are too nosy about what you do in your own home. If anything's happened between 2016 and now, it just seems that people have become more comfortable being and feeling self-entitled. Maybe it's true that I should go back to being open and firm about saying 'no', that we should behave as if the world we want is the world we indeed live in, but - I'm tired of the confrontations; don't want to run the risk of more 'no's being ignored than are already are and have been; want to avoid the fatigue of one 'no' needing to be dragged into a series, want to keep some things that shouldn't be owed to people - like where I'm going, what I'm doing - to myself, without them potentially turning up.

Sue C4, but MoH still has to come
clean on RM30 mil scandal...
Health Minister Dr Adham Baba has threatened to sue the Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) today after the organisation linked him to a company being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over a contract worth RM30 mil. C4 ran a damning statement yesterday, calling to question the minister’s integrity in the whole controversy by linking the man, through his private clinic chain Klinik Adham Sdn Bhd, to a certain Iskandar Miza Ahmad, then former director of South Asia Noble Sdn Bhd (SANSB). The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Khazanah Jaya Sdn Bhd, the property developer at the heart of the scandal. SANSB and Khazanah Jaya are both controlled and owned by Tan Boon Keong and Tan Jiat Jui. And Khazanah Jaya, an obscure property developer, has been allegedly involved in the controversy. Iskandar Miza is also a shareholder/director of Klinik Adham. Now, for a country that has raged over RM2.6 bil (think: 1MDB), RM30 mil seems a bit small to be a tinderbox for national uproar but that is the case since the controversy is over the procurement of lab equipment to help mitigate the impact of Covid-19. And that is the charge: misappropriation. To add to that drama is the MACC swooping in to investigate five companies. There are no official names for now as MoH and MACC have been silent; the latter due to its standard operating procedures since investigations are ongoing. But silence is never golden. And in that space, many voiced their concerns and discontent. C4 was among them. But the organisation built its argument on a weak premise. Sure there was some relationship but did that relationship lead to the financial scandal we are witnessing right now? While MACC decides these things, Adham has distanced himself from the problem, saying what C4 did was “character assassination” and that he has no vested interest in procurement matters. He has also sent a letter of demand to C4 and if the organisation failed to comply, he will sue.
The link between the directors and/or shareholders
and companies involved is shown above...
I’m not really bothered about these two and the outcome. Sure, who wins this fight would set legal precedence of some sort and will be quoted in textbooks and journals. But I’m going to hone in on the bigger picture: the lack of accountability and transparency. You might cite emergency and the need to expedite things, but it doesn’t mean you lack the time to address some of the important points related to the country’s public coffers. What has happened here is that RM30 mil has been abused, hence the investigation. Cooperating with investigators is one thing but what also needs to be in place is a system that ensures sufficient public scrutiny. That is lacking. And the problem is that if this misappropriation of funds can happen under Adham’s watch once, it can happen again. And a lawsuit will not change that. Instead what Adham needs to do is address the crowd and explain and clarify. Sure, we will be sceptical but that’s the nature of communications. And to also make available the statements, findings and reports, including procurement contracts, especially those negotiated during an emergency, for public scrutiny. But even that, too, he is not bothered. In fact, I found out that, for the first time in my journalism career, a ministry’s WhatsApp can be “full.” That was what I was told by Adham’s press secretary when I requested to be included in the group yesterday to access his statements, speeches etc. In effect, I, a member of the media, had been barred from a ministry’s media WhatsApp group. To put in context, I’m in the PMO’s WhatsApp group. No problems there. I’m also in other various ministries’ groups. But the Health Ministry is an exception. I wonder why. Maybe it’s because it’s full with journalists from 500 countries. So, yes, sue C4. But that is not going to change anyone’s perception of how secretive and troubled MoH is. – Emmanuel Samarathisa,Focus Malaysia

The Ultimate Guide to Instant Noodles
Tumblr media
A variety of instant noodles from different countries | James Park

Jjapaghetti goes well with fried egg

It feels surreal to me that we have passed the 2010s already. Time went ahead like an express train without a single stop. What’s more shocking, the first half of 2020 hasn’t  even come to an end but the hassles have been getting out of hand. It was peaked with the news of corona virus (COVID-19) outbreak since the beginning of January 2020 and is still an ongoing issue up to the present time, albeit, thankfully, we have also seen a lot of recovered cases. One of the biggest aftermaths of the outbreak is in the tourism department, in which most governments would put a temporary travel ban as a means of preventive measures.
And have I told you about my yearn of traveling, haven’t I? I wrote a post about my first-time-backpacking-experience in Singapore last year, and my journey didn’t stop there. I’m making my itineraries for my upcoming trips to Japan and South Korea already just to showcase my utmost excitement upon discovering brand new things. Unfortunately, the trip schedules are still on hold as I’m waiting until the whole pandemic comes to an end. As an self-comforting attempt, I decided to write about my previous one-week vacation in Malaysia last December 2019 so that I could reminisce a bit about the lingering feelings.
Day 1: Mind-cleansing and peace-making attempts
Tumblr media
By the time one enters the pit of adulthood, there are endless things to do, and I really mean my words. Working earnestly, either to fulfill your or your parents’ desire; adjusting with the workplace and making sure to get along well with everyone; getting the work done without skipping meals or sleeps; socializing with friends even if it requires you to be present in tame parties or gatherings; building new meaningful connections while maintaining the existing ones; finding a lover and deliberating whether you both will make a great match, then proceeding to marriage if it is, or starting over if you are doomed; and also making more money; not to forget about looking after your family and attending family occasions to meet with relatives who might shower you with ruthless curiosities; also taking part in side volunteering activities in case you are a social person; then definitely making sure that everything goes well in between. Whoa, being a social being is surely busy, isn’t it?
Just like how humans need sleep everyday in order to stay alive, breaks are also needed so that we may keep living. I didn’t think too much on my way to Malaysia, only overwhelming excitement within. And my crazy journey slowly began.
I booked a direct morning flight with AirAsia without extra-baggage to save cost, then went straight to my friend’s apartment from KLIA2. There is a Skybus service that departs every 30 minutes on weekdays (and 60 minutes on weekends) from KLIA2 to various routes available daily, and I left for One Utama stop for MYR 15. It’s one of the biggest and most popular shopping centres in Klang Valley. My friend stays in a condominium nearby along with her co-worker, leaving a one-room space for me to sleep for the next three nights. Later that evening, another Malaysian friend took me to Tanjung Bungah Nyonya in Petaling Jaya’s SS2 area, known as an authentic restaurant to grab essential Nyonya dishes.
As for the public transport, Malaysians mostly use Touch n Go card to commute with train or bus services. You need to buy the card for MYR 15 with a purse value of MYR 9.80. This reusable card can easily be topped-up in convenience stores.
Tumblr media
We had sweet fried chicken, fried tofu and sayur Paku, a vegetable dish known in English as wild fern shoots. I didn’t think I had ever had one in Indonesia but that one was pretty pleasant to my tongue. They all reminded me to my mom’s home-cooked meals.
We stopped by at Restoran Kayu Nasi Kandar SS2 nearby for this delicate roti canai and roasted chicken with dip-in curry sauce, not to mention this sweet roti tissue. Thanks to her, I went home with happy tummy and smiley face.
Day 2: Fun trip, group trip
Haven’t I told you about the superb Couchsurfing app, have I? So basically I managed to gather more people for a one-day trip. Long story short, there were five of us going to popular tourist attractions like Batu Caves and Genting Highlands.
The history of Batu Caves is affiliated with Hinduism, and this is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, which was built in honor of Lord Murugan. If you are familiar with a huge statue at the entrance of Batu Caves, yes, that is the statue of Lord Murugan. Batu Caves itself is always swarmed with visiting tourists.
Tumblr media
It cost me my bloody sweaty t-shirts and tanned complexion to reach the huge cave on top of the stairs.
The next destination was Genting Highlands. With the entrance fee of MYR 16, you can roam around the French village, Japanese village and also many other awaiting attractions. We stopped by Colmar Tropicale, a gorgeous Medieval French Village in Berjaya Hills. The cold wind was mild but humid and I indeed felt like leaving for a far far place.
One of the most fascinating experiences was visiting Amber Court, a 23-story apartment building known more as a haunted hotel in Genting. Legend said, a lot of gamblers committed suicide there after losing everything in the casino. If you look up on Google, you might find several interesting testimonies from people who once visited Amber Court. We, too, entered one empty room once and felt something creepy inside. It definitely isn’t a place you’d be comfortable roaming around.
To wrap up the visit, I visited Sky Avenue Shopping Mall and entered the Sky Casino, known as the largest casino in Genting Highlands. In order to make an entrance, you need to register the membership to receive a membership card. As part of the regulations, you are allowed to enter the gate unless you are underage, a Muslim or wear slippers. Photo-taking is also forbidden inside the casino, but it is definitely a huge-scaled casino. You can top-up the balance of the card in order to play the game. Machines are everywhere and people are busy gaining money under the supervision of CCTV cameras and security guards.
Later that night, my local friend took us to Restoran Tiong Hokkien Mee (non-halal) located around Damansara Utama to try the oriental Hokkien Mee there. The texture of the noodle is thick and coated with greasy seasoning, also added with seafood and samcan chops. Definitely a great meal to end day for only MYR 45 (a big portion for 3-4 moderate servings).
Day 3: Lone wanderer in Malacca
The days ahead were pure solo traveling for me. I took off at 7 in the morning to catch the bus to Malacca, a historic state located in the southern part of Malay Peninsula. There is a plenty of bus services that depart from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) every 30 minutes with particular operating hours. I bought a TBS – Melaka Sentral bus ticket for MYR 11.4 (including TBS Passenger Insurance Protection for MYR 0.40). The trip approximately lasts for two hours, but the seats were comfortable to sleep on so it didn’t matter. December is still on the rainy season so I was told to bring an umbrella with me in case of any drizzles, which did happen upon my arrival there.
One of the most popular tourism spots in Malacca is Jonker Street, known also as the centre of Chinatown. Although it is mostly packed in the evening for the fabulous Night Market, some shops are also open during the day to welcome local or foreign visitors. Snacks, full meals, handicrafts and souvenirs are available along the long wide alley.
This is the widely-known chicken rice ball that I tried at Famosa Chicken Rice Ball outlet. the savory rice ball cost MYR 1.20 each and tasted like the Japanese onigiri. Added with a steam otak-otak for MYR 13, they made a mouth-watering palatable lunch menu to my mouth.
In Malacca, you may discover gorgeous ancient landmarks and fortresses that spark British, Dutch and Portuguese vibes. It is a relatively small city but I only had half a day to roam around. Thus, I managed to witness several ancient churches and other buildings upon walking down the road from Jonker Street. Some buildings of walkable distance are Christ Church Melaka, St. Paul’s Church and A’Famosa Fort. No entrance fee required.
I ended my solo trip in Malacca at around 5 and went back to KL using the same means of transportation and the same bus fare as well. Upon my arrival, my local friend took me to Big Big Wantan in Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya for a bowl of warm wantan mee for MYR 6.5. I would say that it was one of the best wantan mee I have ever tasted with great thin mee’s texture and yummy pork dumplings, 10/10 lah.
Tumblr media
*Not exactly a photogenic angle, if not an atrocious one, but yeah.
Day 4: A fresh start in Penang
I wanted to experience another side of Malaysia after spending some days in KL, and my choice fell on Penang, or known also as Pulau Pinang. It is a state located in the northwest coast of Malaysia Peninsula. Many people, including myself, probably have heard of Penang because of the prominent advanced hospitals. You can ride a bus, take a train or fly with a plane from KL to Penang. I flew with AirAsia airline for around MYR 80 and stayed with a host from AirBnB. It was a cozy room in an apartment located in Bayan Lepas, about 5-minute distance (by car) from Penang Airport. The rent cost about MYR 13 (including the service fee) per day. I think AirBnB does a great job in accommodating single or group travelers with clean cozy budget rooms in strategic locations of the town.
The capital city of Penang state is a city named George Town, or officially the City of Penang Island. It has it all; good signature cuisines, entertainments, night markets, malls and cultural heritages. Bayan Lepas, however, is a free industrial zone that contributes to the financial improvement of Penang as the financial centre of the northern part of Malaysia. It roughly takes around an hour or more to reach George Town from Bayan Lepas by bus. I had to go past more than 30 bus stops in order to get there, but staying close to the airport surely has its own perks.
Tumblr media
The astounding breath-taking view from the window of my AirBnB room during the day.
And the rest of day was all about food-tasting experience.
Tumblr media
This is the authentic hokkien mee from the Three Road 888 Hokkien Mee at Presgrave Street, George Town, and dawet cendol from the stall in front of the store. It comes with yellow noodles, bean sprouts, half a boiled egg and pork. The soup is thick and robust and everything else perfectly fits into places. 8.5/10 for me. And the dawet cendol makes an awesome fresh dessert.
Tumblr media
There is this popular place to eat Nasi Kandar, a northern Malaysian dish that comes with well-spiced curry broth. Nasi Kandar is originally brought by Tamil Muslim traders from India that settled in Malaysia. Restoran Deen Nasi Kandar is quite well-known in George Town and the queue is crazy. I waited for around 20 minutes before being able to finally sit down and have a proper dinner. It is somewhat similar to Nasi Padang, one of Indonesia’s signature food from Minangkabau, North Sumatera. Regardless, if I have to compare the taste between Nasi Kandar and Nasi Padang, I’d say that Nasi Padang is more on the spicy side and Nasi Kandar is richer in spices. Both are delicious in their own ways. Prices are affordable depending on your choice of add-ons.
Tumblr media
Lastly, my final culinary experience ended with a koay chap from a regular street stall in George Town’s night market. Made of hard-boiled egg, mushrooms, pork belly, pig intestines, pig skin, this is not a kind of food I would like to eat on a daily basis, but still acceptable as a culinary choice. It probably cost around MYR 10.
Day 5: A lost day in George Town
The next day was another solo adventure to George Town. Penang isn’t as advanced as Kuala Lumpur in terms of public transport, but they surely provide a lot of buses to hep people commute from here to there. However, the biggest downside of public transports in Penang is that they accept cash but do not give change.  I only  had the RapidKL  card with me, surely non-usable to tap in the buses in Penang. There is this Mutiara card which local people use as a top-up card, just like the RapidKL card. However, I believe that it’s only applicable for locals because you need to register with your identification card. Thus, I spent lots of coins and banknotes more than I should have done because they offer no change.
Another point to note if you are about to travel around Penang by bus is to pay serious attention to the bus stops mentioned by the loud speaker or written on the screen because there slight differences might occur with the guideline written in Google Maps. One time I received quite a backlash from a bus driver for being accused as a free-loader. I initially planned to visit Snake Temple so I checked the location via Maps and even memorized the stops. Unfortunately, I missed the stop because the names of the bus stops were unfamiliar (I was sure I did check the route of the correct bus number, though). I wanted to get off soon but the driver saw my bus ticket and he thought I purposefully checked in for Snake Temple for a cheaper fare. It was indeed a baffling situation for me and I ended up putting in more coins and got off in George Town. Nonetheless, that experience left a bitter taste in my mouth.
George Town is a beautiful town surrounded by classic yet historical buildings and polished by modern infrastructures. The weather was relatively hot but also quite windy, so walking down the long street is not exactly devastating. The sky and floating clouds offered a marvelous view along the horizon. And my first quest was all about food.
Tumblr media
I found Yeap Noodles Cafe by accident while walking down Lebuh Chulia street. This is Yeap Noodles in Herbal Soup with pork slice, crab sticks, fish ball and beancurd skin for MYR 11.9. Not aesthetically pleasing, I would say, and it tasted quite bland in my opinion. Maybe I should’ve ordered different menu like the ones with thicker broth or the fried noodles. 7/10 since I was starving at that time, but I believe that the price was quite overrated.
Tumblr media
And of course I didn’t want to miss the view of Batu Ferringhi Beach while in Penang. It took around an hour to reach the beach from George Town by bus (I took the bus from Komtar Terminal, where nearly all local Penang buses make a regular stop). Sky was disgustingly bright and clear at that moment, definitely a great place to clear your mind and rest for a bit. They offer banana boat and parasailing activities too!
Tumblr media
If I had to mention a recommended noodle place in Penang, this is it. Hong Kee Wan Thun Mee (also known as Hong Kee Bamboo Noodle) in Lebuh Campbell, George Town. They seriously serve one of the most authentic Chinese mee in town. Thick and chewy in texture, added with yummy dumplings on the plate. I’d give 9.5/10 on this one, really. Spent MYR 8.3 and it’s really worth-it.
In the end, my lost day was impressive enough albeit I did spend hours roaming from here to there even with the guide of helpless Google Maps, or helpless me. I walked from here to there, even went as far as visiting Batu Ferringhi Beach by myself and made an entrance only to sit on the sand for hours with blank thoughts. I was exhausted and my legs almost gave in but somehow I managed to catch the bus and rest my body for an hour before I reached the apartment by 10 PM local time. It marked my last day in Penang and I felt that time flew too fast but I was fortuitous to have seen good things, eaten good food and met good people. I believe that I have found the true joy of traveling, which is all about good experience. And although getting lost was not exactly a pleasant experience, it has told me that as alone as I might have been, I still have myself and this self will never leave me in whatever mess I have gotten myself into. And that being said, I should take a really really good care of myself, and so do you.
Day 6: A Medan day
I didn’t have a particular reason for visiting Medan other than a short escape in an unfamiliar place. Medan is merely an hour away from Penang by air transportation, so why not? Coming back to place where people speak the same language as I do after quite a long time was finally breathing a fresh air after suffocation. There weren’t many things to do other than eating good food and sight-seeing good things. I booked a room for a night with a cool budget price from AirBnB.
Tumblr media
I found Rumah Makan Tabona upon surfing on the internet to look up iconic food and places in Medan. It was established in 1983 with curry bihun as their signature dish. I ordered curry mee and it’s heavenly-tempting and rich in taste. The curry broth surprisingly matched well with the mee and I was really in awe. 9.5/10 and I believe everyone should have a try!
In the evening, I was recommended to try Kwetiau Ateng by a friend, to which I welcomed with an open hand. I mean, who doesn’t like kwetiau and the chewy texture that digests well in your stomach?
The complete set of kwetiau dish includes fishball, lapcheong, chasio, shrimp and egg. It’s inarguably 10/10.
Tumblr media
Indeed one of the best kwetiau I have ever had in my life. A legit 10/10!!
Day 7: A night at KLIA2
In order to fly back to my hometown, I took multiple flights as following; from Medan back to KLIA2, then KLIA2 straight to my hometown. It had been planned beforehand as I had calculated lots of different options and this one was the cheapest, if not counting the extra-baggage cost that I paid later.
I woke up quite early in the morning and prepared myself for a brief adventure before an evening flight to KLIA2. The weather was great and the sky was as clear as crystals, so there wasn’t any reason to be dispirited.
Tumblr media
As a choice of breakfast, I tried Soto Kesawan Medan, another prominent culinary option for tourists and locals. Usually soto is served as clear chicken soup, but soto kesawan comes with thicker broth (but different from curry broth) and is served with shrimp as the main menu (but chicken is also available so you can choose anything that goes better in your mouth). Personally, I don’t find soto kesawan mouth-watering enough to be willing to come over for the second attempt. 7.5/10 is enough. Not my cup of tea, I guess.
Tumblr media
Before my flight back, I visited a historical place named Tjong A Fie Mansion, a classic residence located in a neighborhood called Kesawan, West Medan. It is registered as a historical landmark as well as one of Medan’s cultural heritage. Entrance fee is IDR 35k including tour guide-service to go sightseeing around the two-storey mansion. Tjong A Fie is a successful Chinese entrepreneur who literally built an empire in Medan that employed over 10,000 workers at that time. He became a prominent figure of Chinese leader respected by the people.
When the time was close to a farewell, I got back to the airport and waited for my upcoming flight. It was only like a short two-hour flight that I was already back in KLIA2 at around 5 PM local time. The upcoming flight to my final destination was early in the next morning, which marked my first attempt staying out in the airport. It was bothersome, anyway, to leave the airport and commute again so early, so I’d rather hold out until the final straw. It was a brand new experience beyond shadow of a doubt. I kept walking here and there without direction like a lost puppy.
The stores inside KLIA2 generally close at midnight and reopen at dawn, but there are a few food shops that open 24/7. When I was extremely used up after a long walk, I sat down on the floor near a charging outlet so that I may recharge my smartphone. There were also people beside me who did the same so it didn’t feel weird at all. I waited for a long time trying to stay awake amidst the fatigue and cold room temperature. Finally, I visited a food shop at 3 AM named Ah Cheng Laksa to digest something warm to my stomach. The one i ordered was Asam Laksa without any meat, and it turned out to be one of the worst food I had ever had all my life.
Tumblr media
The distateful laksa that burned down my MYR 21 huft
Didn’t know exactly how an Asam Laksa is supposed to taste, but this one definitely made me lose my appetite. Thin soup with highly sour taste, bland laksa and fresh-looking veggies. Not gonna give any score because of how bad it was, sorry.
It’s an unfortunate thing that I haven’t been able to experience the real Malaysian laksa (that fits well to my appetite) during my visit to Malaysia.
Some traveling tips which might be useful for beginners (like myself lol)
Budget airlines are not exactly budget-saving if you plan on buying souvenirs, this is the most important thing I realized after I spent extra cost on over-baggage fee on the spot, which was almost twice the regular fee. AirAsia, for example, offers super affordable airfares compared to fellow airlines. However, they don’t come with baggage facility unless you add baggage to cart during the purchase. Not necessarily making the airfare pricier, but baggage cost does make a difference, so pay attention more carefully on it.
Bring yourself an umbrella when you travel around the end of the year. It rained occasionally in December when I visited Malacca, and securing an umbrella in the bag is surely much better than spending extra cost on buying one, isn’t it? Frankly speaking, I was lucky that my host was thoughtful enough to remind me to take her umbrella when I went out.
Always prepare extra small-denomination banknotes if you plan on taking public transports. Just like what I experienced in Penang, it would become an utter hassle if you run out of money just because you spend large bill only to be notified that the bus service doesn’t provide change money.
Anyway, let’s pray that the pandemic shall end soon so that traveling and face-to-face interaction no longer become impossible and let’s not take any relationship for granted. Stay safe people!
Total budget spent: around MYR 1,400k to 1,500k
Go Backpacking: 6D5N in Malaysia It feels surreal to me that we have passed the 2010s already. Time went ahead like an express train without a single stop.
