Jonny Greenwood’s ondes Martenot Tone
Tumblr media

Written in response to the following anonymous question:
Hi TKOG! When Jonny uses his Ondes Martenot/Ondomo/French Connection etc. does he usually use the Sine Wave function or to produce a basic sine wave sound? I am trying to build my own similar instrument so was wondering what sound I should try and aim to produce. Thank you!
Despite how often the sound of the Martenot is described as a “sine tone”, you will only very rarely hear just a sine tone from the instrument. Jonny’s ondes sound on If You Say The Word for example (more on that later) is far richer than a sine wave. Most versions and offshoots of the Martenot do offer a sine wave, but players (ondists) generally combine it with other waveforms. A very common combination is the sine-wave (onde) added to a lowpass-filtered square-wave (petite gambe). This is similar to but richer than a sine wave, and often blends better with other instruments compared to the pure sine.
One reason for these combinations is that the speakers (diffuseurs) of the original Martenot added lowpass and highpass filtering. The currently-produced ondes Musicales Dierstein at one point used a guitar-oriented Celestian Vintage 30 speaker for its primary (principal) loudspeaker, which rolls off the highs at around ~5kHz and the lows at ~200Hz (full graph here). So even a rich waveform will start to sound like a sine when played at a higher pitch, because the speaker will roll off most of the harmonics of a high-pitched note. With a speaker like that, the combination of sine and filtered square will sound like a slightly richer sine wave at higher pitches. And at lower pitches where the fundamental sine sound is filtered out, the gentle square harmonics will still give definition to the note. The speaker really balances out the sound of the instrument.
Jonny’s Analog Tones
Tumblr media
Jonny rehearsing There Will Be Blood with the Wordless Music Orchestra in 2014. His French Connection and its cabinet sit unused as he plays his original digital ondes Martenot. The amp is a rental Vox AC30CC2.
When it comes to Jonny specifically, his choice of waveform depends on both the instrument and the piece of music. For live performances of How To Disappear Completely from 2001 to 2012, Jonny used his French Connection and its Apprentice modular case (the French Connection is just a controller, and produces no sound on its own). At those shows, the instrument is connected directly to the PA, there’s no filtering from a guitar-type speaker. Perhaps that’s why he used a richer saw wave for low notes, and a purer sine-like wave for the high notes. You can hear this clearly in recordings of the band’s Saitama show. But the analog RS-95 oscillators that Jonny uses with his French Connection can’t actually produce a pure sine wave, no-matter the setting of its “shape” knob. So the RS-95′s sine wave sounds more like a triangle wave with some added even-order harmonics (the result of creating the sine wave from the saw/triangle wave). In addition, some other Analogue Systems modules like the RS-100 filter will gently overdrive when connected to a full-volume oscillator, which can add extra harmonics too. When Jonny performed There Will Be Blood with the Wordless Music Orchestra in 2014, he set the volume knob on his RS-110 filter to max, adding some overdrive to fatten sound of the RS-95′s sine output. And Jonny isn’t afraid to use the RS-95′s harmonically rich sounds too: the synthy sliding notes during the last section of the 2+2=5 recording are a great examples.
Unlike the original digital ondes Martenot he obtained in 1999, Jonny’s ondes Musicales Dierstein from 2011 uses analog transistors to generate its sounds (for more info on Jonny’s various Martenot offshoots, see this article). The Dierstein’s sine is also a slightly impure analog waveform, but it is much purer than the RS-95’s sine. It’s interesting to note that, for a performance of There Will Be Blood in 2014, Jonny did use the sine tone (Onde setting) when playing parts originally recorded with his original digital ondes Martenot. However, when playing new compositions with the London Contemporary Orchestra in 2015, Jonny instead used the clipped triangle wave, and even mentioned it sounded good in the concert hall (the Victoria Hall in Geneve). For that show, Jonny did use the Celestian speakers, which gave a warmer sound to the clipped triangle. It’s also interesting that Jonny seems to prefer using just one waveform at a time, rather than combining waveforms by turning on multiple switches.
Tumblr media
A photo of the control drawer (tiroir) of Jonny’s Dierstein, posted on his twitter acount in 2015. Only C and D2 are active. C is a peak-limited triangle wave – imagine a triangle with the top chopped off to form a trapezoid. D1, D2, and D3 are switches for different speakers, and D2 is the reverberant speaker. On the Dierstein, D2 is a guitar-type speaker with a warm-soundng reverb emulation. This is pretty different from earlier versions of D2, which had a speaker connected mechanically to a set of large brass springs.
Stimulating Harmonics
So you may be thinking it’s best to start with a rich waveform and add some filtering. But some of the Martenot’s speakers can also add harmonics. The Palme and Metallique speakers both replace the cone of a normal speaker with a more resonant material. In the case of the Palme, the voice coil is coupled directly to the bridge of the custom-build string instrument. When the voice coil is sent into excitation by an input sound, it directly vibrates the strings. So the Palme does not simply add some stringy reverb. The strings of the Palme are actually “played” directly by the input sound, adding harmonics that were never present in the original sound (if you’re curious for more info on the Palme, see our article on building one).
Why should we care? Well, even when Jonny does use a pure sine setting, the final output we hear still might not be a sine wave. When a sine is used with the Palme speaker, the natural harmonics of the vibrating strings are added to the sound, and shaped by the resonance of the Palme’s body.
Tumblr media
A photo of Jonny with his digital ondes Martenot and Palme speaker at the Koko in London for the Big Ask in 2006.
The studio recording of The National Anthem is a good example of a pure waveform used with the Palme. For that recording (which we transcribed in detail), Jonny used his original digital ondes Martenot. The digital instrument is able to produce a much purer sine wave than the analog offshoots of the ondes Martenot like the French Connection and Dierstein. But even so, we hear extra harmonics from the strings of the Palme, giving an ethereal haze to the notes.
Jonny also likes to use Vox AC30 amplifiers with his digital ondes Martenot, as he did perhaps most notably for the performance of Cymbal Rush on the Henry Rollins show in 2006. Overdriving the input of the AC30 adds extra harmonics to the sound, which are tamed by the lowpass filtering of the tone cut control and speaker – the same principle as overdriving an Analogue Systems lowpass filter. Jonny only had his digital ondes Martenot when he recorded his parts on If You Say The Word (2:38-3:05, 3:48-4:16). His tone on the song is much less hazy and reverberate compared to The National Anthem, doesn’t seem to have been used (unless it’s blended very softly underneath). But his tone is still fairly rich in overtones, so perhaps they were recorded through a tube amp like the AC30 for some gentle overdrive.
That said, it’s also worth noting that the digital Martenot can produce many additional sounds that his Ondomo, French Connection, and Dierstein are incapable of. Jonny’s interview with ondist Suzanne Binet-Audet for Caroline Martel documentary Wavemakers reveals some of the digital instrument’s more organ-like tones.
Tumblr media
A long-exposure photograph of Jonny playing his digital ondes Martenot in the Round Room at Tottenham house, during the recording of In Rainbows.
Really, anything will do!
Simply put, there is no single waveform or timbre that can be attributed to an ondes Martenot. Each version and offshoot of the Martenot has its own waveforms, and they only sometimes overlap. But whether he’s playing his Ondomo or his French Connection, Jonny has nonetheless found a way to get his own sound from them. Ultimately, what matters most is the control interface. As long as one plays using the ring and intensity key (touche d’intensité), any periodic waveform will sound like an ondes Martenot – you might just need to adjust the filtering and reverb. That’s the reason VST replicas of the Martenot, such as Soniccouture's Ondes, sound so different from the real thing, despite using samples of the Martenot’s waveforms and impulse responses of the speakers. Unsurprisingly, the control interface is what matters most. Still, it might be worth playing around with the waveforms in a VST like that, just to hear what you like. You can also listen to the timbre samples on Josh Seman’s website, though you can’t use that to test blends of waveforms.
You seem interested in Jonny’s timbre specifically, but things are equally muddy when creating a historically-correct instrument. Most modern derivatives of the Martenot are based on the MK7 instrument, which used transistors. But many of the most famous pieces for the Martenot were written for earlier version of the instrument that used tubes. Those versions had a much fatter sound due to the tubes overdriving, and had a different range of waveforms and timbres. But this doesn’t stop modern ondists from performing Turangalîla beautifully with a MK7. As long as the instrument has enough timbres to cover a good range of moods, the specific waveforms are ultimately fairly unimportant.

Day 1 of the stadium show done, what did you think (if you managed to catch any of it)? We talked about it briefly before during the online concert but considering the set dressings, setlist, outfits and VCRs were all essentially identical to the online show it becomes inarguable that the online show was a trial run for the stadium show. I thought it worked much much better as a stadium show, but am still not convinced that no solo or subunit (other than a very brief Stay performance where OT7 was onstage) songs makes for the best OT7 experience. At times it felt very heavily like the minjoonkook + friends show.
I am still looking forward to watching the other dates in 144p streamed from a toaster though. There were something like 600k viewers on some of those livestreams last night. I can't believe Hybe decided against streaming it, D1 concert DVD or not. They would have made a whack of cash. The MOTS ON:E disks still sold.
I'm a bit late with answering this ask, but perhaps it's for the better, as I have managed to catch a bit of all 4 shows. The only improvement was having a live audience, which is something I assumed it would be the case. I'm still not pleased with the setlist and how the stage looked because it was quite basic. But in this particular case, it can be overlooked, especially for those who were in the audience and I wasn't surprised by the reactions and general feedback. Sitting at home and watching it from a live stream doesn't really do it justice. I think it was the type of concert that BTS needed to have, just to be in front of an audience and that's it.
Looking at how it went down in the first day, I was surprised at the lack of interaction between the members and this is something that I thought about back when I saw the online version in October. They hang around the stage, passing each other, trying not to collide. Compared to their concerts pre-pandemic, it was a bit odd to witness. But then, watching the rest of the concerts, it was clear that perhaps nerves or uneasiness were at fault, given that it was the first. Fortunately, there was some improvement, as it turned out they all became more comfortable with the audience and with themselves as well.
They could have officially streamed the first day as well, I think fans who weren't able to be there in person definitely wanted to be part of the experience, even from their homes. It didn't turn out as emotional as I thought it would be, including the last day, but I have no way of knowing what goes on through a performer's mind being on stage again after 2 years. My guess is we'll see more of it from a making of DVD that will certainly be released.
Overall, looking at the entire picture, from a production point of view, it was not a spectacular concert and it won't go down in history, except for the fact that it was the first with a live audience. It also looks like the same concept will be applied for the one in Seoul in March 2022 and hopefully, after releasing an album and coming up with something else, then we can see if they are moving into a more interesting and thought-provoking approach. I am not holding my breath after one year of the English trilogy, but I also have a tiny bit of hope.

The Last Eight
(for Writer’s Month prompt 8, eight. Set in an old universe of mine-- I connected all the stories I wrote toward the end of high school, when I started The Transfers, into what I called the Everyday Dramas universe. In 2011 I wrote a story about an alumni basketball game at St. Lucy, a tiny Catholic school in danger of closing. In 2012, my tiny Catholic grade school closed, and I wrote a conversation in Forget It between the transfers, who went to schools neighboring St. Lucy--
“Didn't St. Lucy close?” Dom asked (...). “Sorry.”
“Yep,” Jackie answered him.
Once everyone realized what she was saying, there was a spontaneous moment of silence.
“It was under a hundred for a couple years,” said Zoey, gently matter-of-fact. “It was going to happen.”
They had been the largest class in the school. The class actually grew so by the time they were in fourth grade there were 25 of them, enough for five full rows. Then it started to shrink until by eighth grade, only eight were left.
The smaller the school got, the more rumors went around that it was going to close, the less parents registered their kids for next year. So it wasn’t sudden, everyone was starting to think St. Lucy would soon have its last graduating class.
But no one talked about it at school. They knew their parents were talking about it, but at school they kept their mouths shut, because thinking it was one thing but believing it was another. And no one wanted to believe they wouldn’t graduate from St. Lucy.
So no one knew the Christmas Concert would be the last, no one knew Catholic Schools Week would be the last, no one knew the Eighth Grade Rec alumni game would be the last. People must not have registered their kids for the next school year, that must have been the reason the school closed, though once the announcement was made almost everyone talked as if of course they’d registered their kids for the next year at St. Lucy, this was just so sudden.
And suddenly the eight eighth graders knew their graduation was going to be the end.
The church was packed. For the last few years there had been at least a few rows empty, the families of eleven or nine or twelve kids not taking up all the pews, but word got around that the school was closing and since there wasn’t any kind of ‘farewell’ event (a few parents talked about it, but what would they do? Who would they invite? Where would they hold it?), people decided to show up to the graduation instead. The families everyone knew because the parents were so involved with volunteering, whose kids had graduated a few years before. Friends of kids whose younger siblings had still been at the school. A few high school juniors and seniors and maybe even some college kids. A couple girls who still fit into their old uniforms showed up wearing them, and one guy wearing a sloppy bow tie in fabric obviously cut from a sister’s old skirt or jumper, St. Lucy plaid.
Some of the families were already familiar with high school and college graduations, where the audience was asked to hold their applause until the end in order to get through all the names. With only eight graduates, that announcement wasn’t needed. Each of the eighth graders waited nearly a full minute after the one before them shook hands with the principal and joined the line in front of the altar, as a full church clapped and cheered.
Jason McElroy. (Whose name, some people were surprised to learn, was not Jace. The basketball player who’d switch to swimming in high school and qualify for states, but eventually find himself using his free time coaching basketball at Blessed Sacrament, nearby.)
Mallory Guerin. (Who stuck with basketball and went to a D1 school on scholarship. Who took out student loans anyway because she couldn’t complete a nursing degree while playing, so wasn’t done with college when her four years of basketball were up. Who kept her student athlete banner, her BSN degree, and her MSN degree in a chest at the foot of her bed all her life, with equal pride in all of them.)
Lee Wiseman. (She held up a hand to wave to her cheering section. Her family was sitting with their close friends the Robbins, whose two sons had gone to St. Lucy– one had graduated and one would graduate next year, from somewhere else. Next to them– well, next to Jack Robbins’s close-friend-or-maybe-more Shawna– was Lee’s best friend Kate, who waved back with a shaky smile. Kate would graduate next year too, from somewhere else. Lee would be there. They’d be at each others’ college graduations too, then in each other’s weddings.)
Alanna Lucroy. (The one all the teachers liked, who liked all the teachers. The one with straight As on all her report cards. The one everyone expected to go to med school, or law school. The one who became a social worker, married an electrician, and then stayed home to raise three kids, with lots of volunteering at their grade school.)
Kiara Davis. (The one who argued with the teachers. The one who graduated from law school.)
Nora Carrico. (The little sister of the class, who wouldn’t be fourteen until August. The little sister of two Carricos and little cousin of three more, most of them here for graduation. Future favorite aunt to all of their kids, sending them marketing goodies from her work– notebooks and pens and desk toys and squishy models of trains she’d worked on. Saving to buy a spacious 3-bedroom though she lived alone, so there was always a place for family to stay.)
Ella Krstic. (Next youngest in the class but oldest in her family. Her four younger siblings watched from a pew. They’d be going to public school next year because there was no bus from their house to St. David or St. Joseph. Their parents wouldn’t want to separate them from their friends when they reached high school age, so Ella would also be the only one to graduate from a Catholic high school. But she wouldn’t be one of the ones to keep going to church once she got out of her parents’ house.)
Dillon Chappell. (Who went to a public high school but kept going to church until one day he was the one saying Mass. Some of his former St. Lucy teachers liked to say they’d always known he’d be a priest, and some liked to bring up the times they had to scold him in school Masses for slamming hymnals or whispering to Jace and Mallory or getting distracted and having to be reminded to sit, stand, or kneel. He’d preside at a few of their grandchildren’s baptisms and one of their funerals, and Mallory’s wedding.)
They’d planned what would happen next, what would end the graduation, with the music teacher. She slipped back behind the piano during the final round of applause for all the graduates and started with a flourish into the music for Blest Be the Lord, and the eighth graders all started singing the favorite St. Lucy hymn. Alanna and Jace knew every wordy word of the verses. Kiara knew about half but the ones she knew she sang loud, belting out “No evil settle in my soul!” to the back of the church. Dillon and Nora hummed the verses and sang only the chorus. Everyone sang the chorus, the alumni who knew it from their years of school Masses, the parents who’d learned it at Masses where their kids read, and those who just picked up the words that night. For the last chorus, as always, the music teacher took her hands off the piano. Starting with those who knew and spreading to the rest, everyone clapped the beat through to the last line. I shall not fear the dark of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.
Silence. Then Jace raised his voice, solid as if calling a play on the basketball court. “St. Lucy!”
And everyone who knew how to respond did, in a current of voices. “Pray for us.”
The eight looked at each other, Lee fiddling with the fabric of her dress and Nora with a buttonhole on her jacket, Mallory with her hands still together from clapping, Ella and Dillon with tears in their eyes, Alanna with her arms wrapped around her, Kiara rubbing the toe of her shoe on the carpet, Jace swallowing around a lump in his throat. No one wanted to be the first to move. But one of Ella’s siblings yelled for her, and then Kate was pushing out of her pew to come talk to Lee, and everyone else was standing up and gathering their things and clustering in groups or starting toward the front.
The moment was over. They all walked away.

NoCiRbo9 is (was) the name of my band  for over 15 years and we tried to include it in wikipedia, with some song lyrics. But wikipedia marked it as vandalism. My advice: don't use wikipedia unless you have all the time in the world. I own all the copyrights for NoCiRbo9 pictures and music. Paid lots of money and time. Appearently, it was marked as vandalism because they didn't find the informationprovided was accurate for some reason. So I quit the music and everything ese. No more vocal covers no more comic books etc. Good bye.
Revelation II
They scaped as the last resource of humanity to survive. The second one didn't look different to them at the beginning, (let me call it D2), but interfering it caused a new chain of events that made it hybrid. Chain of events that explains this hybrid universe to exist: based on this formula: for the human race to survive, factors X and Y need to interfere the reality in specific dimension (let me call it Vector 1).
D1 + X + Y  = (VECTOR2= D2, X2, [Y2])
D2 + X,[Y]  = (X2, [Y2])
D2 + X2 + Y2= (VECTOR3= D3, X3, [Y3])

What do you think about this:
The instrument, we know and don't mouth, once you activate it, everyone is powerless.
Good that's fine.
There's only one weapon with those properties. There are other weapons, but only one with that exact description. It puts you to your knees. And if you want to kneel and pray that's fine that won't hurt anyone, but that is
not what I'm talking about here. What is the only instrument with that specific power?
That's just enough.

Students creates a weapon, what kind, maybe irrelevant but JIC. If the weapon found is "alien", then we need to think cyberhting was there.

8:17 We are analizing, arranging, decoding data, transcripting, etc. The guys were more time in other dimensions than the time they were missing here.
For the 36:45 hours counted on this dimension when they were traveling, splitted
into the 7 dimensions they had time to before confirming cyberthing was back, we
have meassured, according to their instruments, show about 168 hours,
aproximately. The information collected will help us identify patterns and reality changes and time gaps. The reason cyberthing is destroying universes systematically, and knowing in advanced their movements means that he accesed some time in the
near future to take a look. Just like the guys did. But he didn't do anything else, until Oct8th2017, 13:01:47. Date and time when we show the first confirmed time rupture, for these new set of events. The chain of events was broken to a reality where he is defeated somehow, from here to 2256. But that chain of events was broken again and that can only happen is cyberthing is interfering it directly. Meaning that these are its final moves. Since we already mentioned many times about carlssin, it is possible that for our 2256 timeline he could not even born, so the carlssin we have registered going back in time is product of a now parallel 2256, since this dimension is a confirmed key event keeper.
Anything cyberthing has done is very low profile. Attacks seem to be planed with months, maybe years in advanced, but those humans are or were in trance. We know how, it controls them, but we
cannot specify more for international security reasons. If it's able to do this, all it needs is the instrument we know but don't mouth, understand this: he already has it, but needs amplifying. and we believe that its next step, besides making a series of events as a diversion, is getting this amplifyer, that could be ancient or human made, so it can acccomplish its programmation. We can only save this planet if we keep it away from the amplifier. It could even mean that it's working on creating a new one. For this, everything related with the instrument we know and don't mouth and its amplifier needs to be under extreme surveillance. Remember, cyberthing has the power to "activate" abducted human experiments, to cause mass tragedies. We believe that the remaining significant conspiracy members had influenced the NK Government. Making this a very delicate issue. We need to stop cyberthing and any remaining of the conspiracy, (which you already know what it was about, about awakening the beast); as at the
sametime we prevent the ww3. How do you deal the peace with a conspiracy that's being influenced by the demon? I'm not sure. But that's our mission. If it starts ww3, it will have won. We broke that chain of events once, we need to do that again. Our mistake was thinking that he lost interest on this world so we started looking to the future and investigating other
dimensions, to see what its next step was. Now we know that its next step is still taking over this world, and destroying it, or viceversa.
Time rupture detected: 8:58-Oct11th2017
An advantage of being in a hybrid reality, is that we have the experience from other worlds to help us, worlds that were destroyed and gave us their information to work on possible realities where we win. The disadvantage is that, since it is instable, contamination makes harder to determine with precission some facts.
Those 36:45 hours counted on this dimension weren't all in one travel, they were coming and going coming and going until we confirmed the time rupture on Oct8th2017, 13:01:47.
We are trying to create a time space map where we can focus only on these events. That could take years and now we can't leave the dimension or we risk imminent cyber attack and terror, as it happened on Oct8th2017,
13:01:47.
We are trying to replace some of the names of the visited dimensions by the team
and the ones we have registered Cyberthing was at too, so we can easily know which version of reality we are talking about. But were are running out of time. That will be something to do later, after we survive this situation.
Cyberthing destroyed 2 worlds. The first one did not even noticed what hit. The world where the team comes from. Let me call it by now "D1". A world that was
perfectly stable and not hybrid, as far as they could measure. They scaped as the last resource of
humanity to survive. The second one didn't look different to them at the beginning, (let me call it D2), but interfering it caused a new
chain of events that made it hybrid. Chain of events that explains this hybrid universe to exist: based on this formula: for the human race to survive, factors X and Y need to interfere the reality in specific dimension`(let me call it Vector 1).
So D1 + factor X = vector1 So D1 + factor X + factor Y = vector2 (or vector1 + y = vector2)
D1 + X + Y  = (VECTOR2= D2, X2, [Y2])
D2 + X,[Y]  = (X2, [Y2])
D2 + X2 + Y2= (VECTOR3= D3, X3, [Y3])
D2 + X2 + Y2 = (VECTOR3= D3, X3, [Y3])
D3 + X2,[Y2] = (X3, [Y3])
D3 + X3 + Y3 = (VECTOR4= D4, X4, Y4/[Y4]); where D4 is our world. Our dimension. Hybrid. Requieres at least 2 more dimension key events to exist.
I am not a great scientist, just the basics, but they say I am doing good. Besides other members of the team are brilliant. I am preparing this for when they're back with the Psychic. That should be in about - - that I know.
At the same time the other guys are now recovering. I personally think, using my science-mind, that universe D1 is not really D1 and it is hybrid. But the one masterminded D1 did it so good, that didn't leave any time rupture that anyone else can access, assuring the existing of universes D2, D3, D4 etc...
The question we will always have and maybe never be able to determine exactly is, thinking that I am right, what happened in universe D-0? That is like asking: where did the energy of the big bang came from? 9:32 Going to surf around. I hope you have some good news.
I am often critized by giving to people much information. As long as we progress together as a race, and keep an eye on the bad guys, I don't mind you knowing the same I do.

It is possible that they were affected. Cyberthing is very smart
It is possible that they were already affected. Cyberthing is very smart

11:01 If we are visited by other dimensional travelers, the result varies. If we recieve a visit from, lets say an example:
D4, + X4 + Y4 + (X21 + X34) = Vector X. That's how things start getting really complicated to understand. And sometimes, when we discover that the factors have changed, that means we have a time rupture recently. It will take us years at one reality to do so. That's why I am telling you. We're dealing with something delicate.
I know, I suck as scientist. Anything new? Ok
Hold on

Hi terrans of the D4, I am here to explain what a timespace key event is:
D1 + X1 + Y1 = VECTOR2 Simplified: D2 + X = (X2, Y2/[Y2]) D1 + X + Y = (VECTOR2= D2, X2, Y2/[Y2])
And that correction applies for the rest of the formula.
This correction,
specifically: (VECTOR2= D2, X2, Y2), (VECTOR2= D2, X2, Y2/[Y2])
Ok thanks. Lets see what you got. They are still - -.
