LESS THAN A FORTNIGHT  had passed since the Cardassian withdrawal from Bajor, and thereby, from the station as well. After fifty years of occupation  ( a period that spanned more than a lifetime for many, including for Odo ),  change came rushing in to meet the raw vacuum of possibility left in its wake. But while the planet and its people could finally breathe again, Bajor was deeply scarred and vulnerable, and faced with endless unknowns.
One of those unknowns was to be ruled by the influence of  the Federation.
And Odo, along with any Bajoran unswayed by the promise of the Emissary, did not trust that  humans  and their allies would not simply turn out to be another occupying force. So, as was only prudent when he learned of the upcoming arrival of one Lieutenant Commander Data, an  android  among humans aboard the Federation flagship that was to deliver the station’s new commander, Odo made it his personal business to seek him out. It was an invaluable opportunity, or so Odo hoped, to gain more  objective  insight on the Federation, its people, its culture, its  modus operandi  than other, more  humanoid  representatives had thus far offered.
Odo was pleased to find Data free from duty and exploring the shops and stalls along the ring of the bustling lower Promenade.
“ Uh--hm. Lieutenant, ”  he made his presence known. With his arms crossed and his expression sternly neutralized, Odo hardly made a warm welcome  --  but this was easily the warmest he had yet given to anyone from Starfleet.  “ I’m...  to be Deep Space Nine’s Chief of Security, Odo. I wondered if I might have a word with you, at your convenience? ”
