Finally finished Lycoris Recoil! I remembered the first time when I decided to watch this series, was because I stumbled upon this trailer, and ClariS sang the opening song. The opening song was pretty good (and I really like ClariS), so I thought: “eh, why not?” and decided to watch it. Besides, its genre seems to be action (which I often like) and if I didn’t like it, I could just drop it anytime.
I ended up enjoying it immensely, and not because of the action sequences, but because of the characters and their relationship with each other.
Everyday I prayed for this anime not to end up like Wonder Egg Priority (story-wise and situation-wise...God, I hope all the staffs working on that series are doing well now), and I’m really really glad that Lycoreco stuck to its landing and ended the show successfully. And since I said the characters and their relationship ended up to be the most interesting aspects of this series, I would like to talk about them in depth.
First, Majima. I’m still not sure what to feel towards him, but I mean that in a positive way. He ended up to be a rather interesting fellow, and he has a strange friendship with Chisato. He often establishes himself as Chisato’s rival, and how he wants moments where they can fight against each other even if it means putting the entire city at risk. Chisato’s response to that is often like: “eh, whatever, I’ll deal with you I guess”. Like if Majima wanted a fight against Chisato without putting the whole city and Chisato’s friends at risk, Chisato would surely not mind. But Majima is very unhinged so yeah. Still, I prefer them to just sit down and relax, talk about movies and stuffs like the previous episodes than fighting, but that’s just me. One thing that I found interesting is that, in this episode, when Chisato’s heart started acting up, Majima was surprised, and seemed concerned too. He also stopped attacking Chisato and offered her to take a rest and drink. If Majima were her enemy, Majima would take advantage of Chisato’s condition, but he didn’t. And this shows that they are friends, no matter how strange their friendship (or better, rivalry) is. Majima is also somewhat a nice guy for worrying about Chisato’s condition than taking advantage of it. He still sowed for chaos somewhere else, though.
And now, about Mika, and by extension Yoshimatsu as well. Mika has always been a dad figure for Chisato, and even more after the whole reveal, but his dad instinct really showed here as he showed no hesitation to beat the hell out of Yoshimatsu’s subordinate for toying around Chisato’s heart. And he also showed that Mika was actually not disabled at all. Even Yoshimatsu didn’t know that. Mika said something around the line of: “you shouldn’t reveal all about yourself to other people, especially to the one you love”. If there’s even any doubt about Yoshimatsu and Mika’s relationship, this erased any doubt of it. And if Mika’s hesitation as well as how heartbroken he was when he pulled the trigger to shoot Yoshimatsu told anything, Mika really loved Yoshimatsu. Yoshimatsu was just really hell-bent in making Chisato to be who he wanted her to be, but Mika wanted Chisato to live her own life in whichever way she wanted to. It’s a complicated relationship, and Mika deserved so much better than Yoshimatsu who dehumanized Chisato and called her a doll, but...yeah. To achieve Chisato’s happy ending, Yoshimatsu had to be killed. In order for Chisato to stay alive, the heart inside Yoshimatsu’s chest had to be taken, and possibly costing his life as well. I saw someone on twitter pointed out that this series’ ending was happy, but also very sad as well, because of how Mika and Yoshimatsu’s relationship ended, and Yoshimatsu’s fate. And someone on twitter also pointed out that based on the message card from Yoshimatsu, Yoshimatsu did plan to gift the heart to Chisato and seemed to wish for her happiness, and thus gave the Alan Institute necklace again, assigned her for a mission to be happy, but Chisato seemed to misunderstand that and threw away the necklace. Mika also removed the message from Yoshimatsu, and I think for a good reason. Chisato wouldn’t be able to move on from Yoshimatsu otherwise, and would always be hung up over her missions and stuff, after all.
And now, saving the best for the last: Chisato and Takina’s relationship. Really, this show is about them, revolves around them, and centers at them. Which is great, because all of their moments together are the most enjoyable. I’m also beyond happy that this show ended happily and Takina didn’t have to say farewell to Chisato, especially after all the help that Chisato did to her. I saw someone on twitter said about the core theme of this series: moving on. Lycoris Recoil is about a series of moving on to a new life, leaving the past behind.
Takina was exiled from DA, went to LycoReco Cafe and met Chisato. There, she learned about Chisato’s character, Chisato’s morals, and about life. From Chisato, Takina learned that their lives are valuable as much as the others. Granted, that things didn’t go as smooth as I described--we all knew Chisato and Takina argued a lot against each other in early episodes and how Takina failed to understand Chisato’s decision to not kill--but Takina eventually, and slowly, understood. Chisato also understood that Takina wanted to return to DA so badly, but when Takina returned, everyone was unwelcome to her. Bad rumors spread around them about her, Fuki had a new partner and didn’t want to involve herself with Takina anymore, and Kusunoki had no plans to make Takina return to DA. This left Takina feeling lost, realizing that the place she thought she belonged to didn’t welcome her anymore, and as a Lycoris, she didn’t know what to do anymore with her life. That’s when Chisato met her up, telling her how happy she was to meet Takina, and teaching Takina to welcome the new life at LycoReco cafe, leaving the past behind. Slowly but surely, Takina moved on, and happily live her life in LycoReco cafe at Chisato’s side. Which was why she was at disbelief and feeling lost again when LycoReco cafe was about to be shut down, because she thought she would lose a place where she belonged to again. So, she returned to DA, but in the end, Takina realized that only at Chisato’s side she belongs, and time by time, she returned to save Chisato again, because she wants to be with Chisato, and wants to stay at her side, because Chisato taught her to move on from her past, and to understand the meaning of life.
Chisato was saved by Mika and Yoshimatsu. Yoshimatsu gave her an artificial heart so she could stay alive. Yoshimatsu wanted Chisato to be a murder machine, because that’s her “talent” and Alan Institute was an organization that emphasized one’s talent because that’s the best for them. Yoshimatsu referring himself as ‘savior’ backfired as that propelled Chisato’s pacifism. Mika saw how happy Chisato was at her decision to be a ‘savior’ like Yoshimatsu, and decided not to stop her for her happiness. Chisato remained true to her morals and decisions not to kill. Despite being a highly-skilled Lycoris who could evade bullets and was already high-ranked ever since she was young, Chisato decided that she just wanted to help people around her, and live her normal life in LycoReco cafe. She would pull out her gun (with rubber, non-lethal bullets) when the situation and mission called, but despite everything, she really is the happiest when she lived her normal life. And that’s because she’s aware of how limited her life was, so she wanted to live her life and enjoy it as much as she could. No matter how much everyone around her (Takina, Majima, or even Yoshimatsu) questioned her moral decision, Chisato is persistent in her decision to not kill, and is happy for not killing anyone. That’s why shooting Yoshimatsu, even though not killing him, broke her so much, because not only that went against her belief, but she also wounded someone she really treasured, but she had to do it or else Takina’s life is in danger. When Mika revealed all the situation, and when Yoshimatsu still remained persistent in making Chisato to be a killing machine as he wanted, Chisato was at disbelief. She didn’t expect Yoshimatsu, her savior and the reason of her pacifism, ended up wanting the opposite for her. She wanted to keep her normal life and her current moral decision, but Yoshimatsu tried all he could from manipulating to gaslighting her, even dehumanizing Chisato so she could be a killing machine. Chisato’s character arc ended in this episode, where she finally moved on from the cruel responsibility that Yoshimatsu weighed upon her, and from Yoshimatsu in general. Of course, she obviously knew why she woke up in a hospital and why there was a huge bandage on her chest, and where the heart came from. That’s why she escaped the hospital and ran away to cope with the sadness. But Takina’s insistence of not wanting Chisato to die no matter what it takes, and Takina always returning to her side no matter what, even when Chisato ran away, this propelled Chisato to finally move on from the past that weighed upon her, and live her new, normal life alongside Takina and everyone else at LycoReco cafe. She starts her new life by going back to the things she gave up on, and things she wished she could do (but couldn’t because of her heart), and the first thing she does is to spend more time with Takina, and goes to Hawaii with everyone else, showing that normal life is truly what makes her the happiest.
Chisato helped Takina to move on from her past and find a new purpose of living, and in return Takina also helped Chisato to move on and keep the normal happy life. They help and fulfill each other, and that’s why Chisato and Takina’s characters as individuals, as well as their relationship remain the highlight of this series, and what makes this series great.
Now, onto the downsides. The story was okay, but it was mostly carried by the characters. If the characters weren’t this great, I probably wouldn’t be this engaged into the series. I still don’t like how Majima’s shenanigans in the tower was only covered by “it’s just a show!” excuse when there are clearly one Lycoris and one citizen died witnessed by many people. It’s still very lame. I also don’t have strong feelings towards Mizuki, who most of the time only acted as Kurumi’s sidekick. She really looked like she knew more than she let on, and she could have been a big sister figure to Chisato, but the series treated her mostly as a joke and sidekick character. Kurumi was okay, pretty interesting at her episode, and her battle with Robota was pretty interesting to watch, but she’s also mostly sitting on the sidelines while somewhat magically solved problems with her hacking skills. She’s fine, I just wish she had more than just that. Though, these are mostly problems stemmed from how the series was limited to only 13 episodes, with no space to expand other characters.
Overall, despite its flaws, I still enjoyed Lycoris Recoil so much. It’s been so much fun, and I’m going to miss this series. Though, I’ll let Chisato, Takina, Mika, Kurumi, and Mizuki got their well-deserved vacation, away from the mess of a city because they obviously needed it. Glad they finally have a chance to go to Hawaii together.

His Good Sweater: Chapter 10

Masterlist
Shoutout to my bestie @acollectionofficsandshit for all the drunk comments she made while betaing this one... Wish you guys could see them lol

Pierre paces in his dinky trailer at the Circuit of the Americas and desperately tries to forget you exist. He had already taken down the pictures on the wall but the images were burned into his brain. He had shoved your shirt under his bed, having absolutely no idea how it had made its way halfway around the world to taunt him.
He was slowly unraveling like a spool of thread on a loom as you wove him irrevocably into the tapestry of your life.
The race in Austin started in less than two hours and you hadn't texted him. Not once in the handful of years he'd known you had you neglected to wish him luck before a race, even if it was 2 am your time or you had exams, you always took thirty seconds to warn him to be safe and finish well.
He was beginning to think you hated him for how he'd acted at the gala last weekend, jealous and possessive from afar. Talking to you would have been the better choice. But seeing you laugh and dance the night away had hurt too much. He’d slipped out early after Victoria assured him she could find a ride and sped home to fall apart.
He had only barely managed to piece himself together in time for the race.
Pierre checks his phone for the third time in as many minutes and swears under his breath. He didn't know why he expected it to ring and for your face to pop up at this point. Even if you called to tear into him, he'd still fall to his knees at the sound of your voice. He just wanted to hear you speak, didn't care what was said, only that he could latch onto your words and lose himself in them.
Hope sparks when his phone chimes but he nearly throws it across the trailer when he sees Charles' name.
Heard from her yet?
No. At this point I'm beginning to think I never will again.
Maybe she fell asleep early?
It's 5 pm in London. I'll bet you she's eating a bowl of takeout from the Chinese place down the street, not sleeping.
Its still possible. Don't dwell on it. This isn't the headspace you wanna be in before a race. Block it out. I don't wanna see my best friend wind up hurt today.
Pierre didn't reply, if only because Charles was right. Worrying would get him nowhere. After his shitty qualifying yesterday, he started thirteenth on the grid so he had his work cut out for him. Austin offered plenty of opportunity for overtakes; he could get the job done if his team made the right calls.
And if he made it to the podium, you would have to text him.
The thin mattress groans when he sits to unlace his hastily tied race boots. He folds his legs to sit criss cross and places his palms on his knees. The familiar pose already has some of the tension leaving his shoulders as his eyes slide shut. He breathes in for ten seconds, reflecting on what ails him. He holds the breath for five seconds before releasing it slowly.
He repeats the process until he comes to terms with the fact that you won't be wishing him luck. That was your choice; there was nothing he could do about it and therefore no sense reading into it. He had done all he could to convince you to trust him. The ball was in your court; he had to be patient and wait for you to take a shot.
“Focus,” he murmurs to himself, forcing any erroneous thoughts from his head. “Walk through the track.”
The circuit at Austin was challenging, consisting of a mix of 20 sweeping corners and scattered hairpins. He was almost lucky in a way to be starting so far back on the grid because turn one was only a few hundred meters from pole and their tires would be slightly colder and less grippy upon arrival than his would be. The few extra seconds afforded to him by starting thirteenth could mean the opportunity to leap frog past his rivals in the first corner.
The counterclockwise circuit meant he would have to keep an eye on his front left tire too, as it would wear faster than the others. He'd change gears an average of 66 times per lap, higher than similar length tracks like Monaco. Pit stops cost an average of nineteen seconds, meaning he would need to build a significant gap to the driver chasing him in order to avoid the threat of any undercuts.
There were too many variables occupying space in his mind to afford you a sliver of it.
Some time later he decides that his four leaf clover tucked safely in the worn leather of his wallet will provide all the luck he needs and switches on his pre race playlist after popping in his ear buds.
"Sights on the podium," he murmurs to himself, hand on the doorknob. "Let's race."
The bass flows through him as his feet carry him to the Alpha Tauri garage on autopilot, through the back entrance and to his plain white driver room. The familiar beats are a numbing salve spread on his frayed nerves, his anticipation rising like a crimson wave in his veins. He leaves his clothes in a haphazard heap in the corner and changes into the white fireproofs hanging nearby, thoughts momentarily veering to you knocking on the door and stripping them right back off.
Shaking his head to clear his mind, he runs through his usual stretch sets until Pyry arrives to walk him through reflex exercises.
"How's your head?" Pyry asks, running him through more cool down stretches. "Do we need to take a minute and do some meditation?"
"Beat you to it," Pierre grunts out, pushing back against the hand on his head to work his neck. "I'm good."
"You sound better than you have all week, I'll give you that. Keep that focus, use it to propel yourself forward."
"Run me through the lineup again," Pierre requests, "I need something else to think about."
Because if he let his mind follow the path it wanted to, it would inevitably lead to you and undo the work he had done to avoid that. He needed to be empty of anything that wasn't racing, anything else was an unnecessary distraction that had the potential to end in disaster.
Pyry rattles off the grid in order of who Pierre needs to overtake, pausing between each name to give him time to recall their driving styles and potential chinks in their armor to exploit. He knew from tapes of previous years that Stroll often ran wide into turn one, giving Pierre the option to brake late and sweep up the inside. Vettel was half convinced the track was cursed, so his mind would work against him enough that Pierre could exploit it and get past at some point. He continued until he got to Hamilton and Max locking out the front row, where he would need a bit of luck to overtake.
"You got it?" Pyry asks, stepping back.
Pierre rolls his shoulders and nods.
"Get shit done mate," Pyry says and bumps fists with his driver. He slips out to allow Pierre a moment to center himself before slipping into his race suit, leaving it half unzipped and tying it around his waist before following his trainer.
Pyry leads the way to where the matte navy and white car waits, mechanics swarming it like studious worker bees tending to their queen. No one talks to him save his engineer because words from anyone else threaten to break his carefully constructed race mentality. If they wanted him to bring home points, they knew to leave him alone once he was suited up.
His mind is blank of anything but statistics as he twists his ear buds in and pulls on his balaclava and helmet. As his vision narrows to the sliver of track he can see through his visor, so does his focus. With forty minutes to lights out, he's directed out onto the track. He rips the wheel to the right as he exits the garage, getting a decent powerslide for his efforts.
There was no doubt in his mind that he would land on the podium, if only to see the look on your face when he did.
**********
It took an unfathomable amount of restraint to keep yourself from calling Pierre to wish him luck.
You texted Max instead, wishing him a safe and comfortable podium a half hour before lights out. He hadn't responded, likely already in the garage with his trainer going through his pre race routine.
The pace Max had set the day before had awarded him pole position and the margin between him and Hamilton had been enough that you were confident in his ability to hold off the Mercedes for all fifty six laps.
If you were honest with yourself, you were disappointed that the Alpha Tauri you so desperately tried to ignore would be starting in thirteenth. You try not to think about it, instead queueing up SkySports and opening your laptop for pre race coverage. You avoid the interviews in favor of listening to the commentators analyze the grid.
"It should be an easy win for Max as long as he fends off Hamilton until the first round of pit stops. The undercut works well here, as Red Bull proved last year, and I'm sure they plan on doing the same thing this year."
You hum in agreement, gingerly sipping your steaming tea. You really ought to consider a career as a sportscaster at this point based on how often you came to the same conclusions they did.
"I think one of the biggest shakeups is Russell starting all the way up in eleventh after his amazing qualifying for Williams yesterday. Think he can hold onto that position?"
"He's got some fierce competition not far behind in the form of Alpha Tauri. Gasly starts thirteenth- surprisingly far back on the grid given the otherwise flawless performance he's shown this year. But it seems likely that he should be able to overtake-"
You flick the tv on mute, unable to stomach listening to them sing his praises. You numb your mind with social media until the Formula 1 theme plays on your laptop, alerting you that there's a few minutes until race start. Tire blankets are peeled off and the drivers weave their way through the formation lap with the exception of Kimi who takes his traditional straight line approach to warm up his supersoft tires.
Most of the front runners are on ultrasofts, indicating a two stop strategy. It was Pirelli's recommended approach, and you were glad that Horner heeded their advice for once and let Max use the ultras in Q2. It would give Max the upper hand over Hamilton who starts on the yellow sidewall tire and thus slightly slower lap times.
Crofty and Brundle break down the notable turns as the cars line up on the grid, pointing out the sharp hairpin only a few hundred meters from pole position. If Max got away clean, he would be ahead of the cramped pack and have an even better edge over the silver arrows who would be forced to queue behind him.
The traditional "lights out and away we go" kicks off the grand prix, engines roaring into the first turn. Max does manage to get away clean and is awarded with an immediate advantage. Turn one proves tragic for the Alfa Romeo of Raikonnen and the Asthon Martin of Stroll who collide and cause Kimi to spin. They rejoin at the back of the pack, your eyes snagging on the navy and white of an Alpha Tauri as it streams past.
Your heart spins in a similar fashion when the GAS driver tag leaps up two places in the timing table, suddenly in eleventh due to the incident. Your gaze snaps to the laptop humming on your legs before you remember its Max's driver cam you queued up. The Dutchman is silent as his engineer relays information about the incident and informs him of the widening gap between those chasing him.
“Confirm received,” Gianpiero says calmly. No matter the situation or how heated Max got, he always kept his head. It was what made the duo such a good match and had likely kept Max from going off the rails on more than one occasion.
“Yeah,” Max says shortly, clearly pissed about how quickly Hamilton was approaching. “Let me know when I’ve got enough charge to get out of range.”
“Yep, will do. Just keep this pace and you’ll hold him at bay.”
Live coverage replays the incident between Stroll and Raikonnen from the view of onboard with Pierre. The instant the 10 on the halo appears in the center of your screen you suck in a breath. He yanks the wheel to avoid colliding with Ocon, who had to do the same to keep from hitting his teammate as they navigate through the carnage.
You chew on your lip and try to refocus on the battle between the front runners. Not much is happening in the midfield for the next thirty or so laps and Max just barely manages to build a solid enough gap between himself and Hamilton to dive into the pits comfortably without losing places.
Your phone rings and you answer it without checking who it was as the only person you wouldn't answer was currently occupied.
"Hello?"
"Why the fuck didn't they pit Daniel?!"
You grin, noting the blistering beginning on his front left tire as SkySports switches to his onboard camera. "Because he's about to pass Charles," you tell Dan's girlfriend. She didn't call you often during races. It was likely that she knew you were nearing your wits end and this was her way of offering support.
"He won't be able to with those tires- oh." She breaks off when Daniel passes a DRS detection zone and his rear wing opens, allowing him to pass the Monegasque with ease.
"Told you," you say with a touch of reprimand. "You're always too nervous about those things. Daniel knows how to drive, just trust him to get the job done and he'll bring home another trophy for your apartment."
"I don't live here," she points out and you roll your eyes. She had lived in London as long as you had known her, but she was almost always at Daniel's apartment whether he was in town or not. Daniel digs in as the camera follows him for a lap, highlighting the widening gap between the McLaren and the Ferrari.
"You basically do. At this point, you're paying rent for a dusty one bedroom apartment on the east side that you set foot in maybe once a month." She scoffs but you push on, "a waste of sterling if you ask me, when you're at Daniel's every time I ask you to do anything."
"You act like I never- there goes Pierre!"
His name sparks dread in your gut as your attention flicks back to the screen in time to see him overtake Bottas on the inside of turn one. He'd managed to claw up to fifth with the move, somehow gaining places while you weren't looking.
"Good for him," you croak, trying your best to be genuinely happy for him. He was pushing the car to the limit and you'd be amazed if he didn't wind up on the podium along with Dan and Max. Charles and Hamilton were the only ones in his way, and something told you Charles wouldn’t put up much of a fight when his mate reached his gearbox. Hamilton would prove a challenge but he had been making tiny mistakes all day. Nothing significant, though enough to add up to him barely holding onto second while Daniel rode his gearbox.
"He's got ten laps to get past those two," she murmurs as if momentarily forgetting you were on the phone.
"Can we talk about literally anything else please?" You whisper, half tempted to shut off the race completely.
"Babe, you have to face the music at some point. Either you never want to see him again or you love him, which is it?"
She never failed to be anything but brutally honest. You appreciate it because everyone else let you brush off your problems, but she called you on your bullshit. She would needle you about it until you folded.
"I think it's better for both of us if I pretend we never met, don't you?"
"Easier for you, yes," she agrees. "But it'll kill Pierre. You don't think you could keep in touch with him, just as friends?"
"I don't know if I can handle that. I can barely look at him without wanting to bawl my eyes out."
She sighs, pausing to contemplate what to say. Voice soft, she continues, "Why don't you just take him back? Clearly it's ruining both of you. Are you really gonna let the press wreck the best you ever had? I know its hard but-"
"I'm not like you," you cut in. "I can't just ignore the articles and the comments and pretend there aren't people out there that hate me for being with him. They came to my house, disrupted my family. Hell, Ben can't even go to school without being mobbed by his classmates demanding answers. If my suffering is what allows my family to go about their lives then so be it."
"If that's what you wanna believe."
You sigh, tangling your fingers in the hem of your shirt. "It is."
"Alright," she says, voice teetering on a knife's edge. "I know better than to try to change your mind when you're like this. He's on the podium by the way. Oh, and watch what you say to Max- Pierre will read into it."
She hangs up without a goodbye, leaving you to deal with the realization that the podium is indeed VER RIC GAS on your own. Your eyes are glued to the Red Bull and McLaren drivers, blatantly ignoring the one in the white suit as the anthems play and the champagne is sprayed, turning away to busy yourself with making coffee when Daniel hands his liquid filled race boot to third place.
You weren't quite sure how you were supposed to watch what you said to Max- there was no reason to in your mind. Max was your next closest friend on the grid and you had every right to congratulate him if you wanted to.
Resolute in your decision, you text Max and Daniel a quick congratulations before shutting off the TV and closing your laptop.
Max's insane custom ringtone he'd selected for himself nearly makes you jump out of your skin when it blares from your phone.
"Hey great race-"
"Did you see it? I wasn't sure if you'd watch it- did you see my move on Hamilton when he tried to get past me?" He was talking a mile a minute like he was still out on track. "I was like- and then Dan tried to overtake me on the final lap and I was like no way! And then-"
"Max," you chime in, dragging out the 'a' with a sing-song voice. "You're rambling."
"Oh right. Yeah but I made it! Led every lap and finished with another win."
"That's great." You force as much enthusiasm in the words as possible, trying to match his chaotic energy. "You did great. I know it probably doesn't mean much, but I'm proud to be your friend. You beat a world champ!"
"It means a lot-"
"Who's that?"
You stiffen at the familiar cadence. You had assumed Max was back in the garage when he called, but he must have still been in the podium room. You could picture him in his race suit, smudges of grease and dirt staining the pristine white. Beads of sweat probably ran down his neck, begging to be brushed away by your tongue.
"Uh, no one," Max says in a lame attempt to cover up his digression. "I gotta go," he whispers to you.
"Let me talk-"
"Wait don't," you start, but the call ends abruptly and you blink. You stare down at your phone, completely dumbfounded. Of course his instinct would be to talk to you, to share the euphoria of a podium with you. It was the first victory in three years he wouldn't have you to celebrate with.
It was only a matter of time until his resolve popped like the cork on his champagne.
**********
Pierre's phone is in his hand as soon as Max hangs up. He hefts his trophy in the other, a wild grin on his sweaty face as he snaps a picture. He makes sure he's the only one in the frame, shamelessly wanting himself to be the center of your attention.
"Mate," Daniel pipes up, catching his eye, "you think that's a good idea?"
Pierre sighs, cutting the Australian a glare. "I'm just trying to fill her in."
"Wasn't your plan to give her space?"
"It's been a week, isn't that long enough?"
"Take it from me, sometimes it takes months for someone to figure things out. Hell, you know how long it took me to sort through my feelings for-"
"I know," Pierre cuts in. "I know. I just- a snap can't hurt can it? C'mon, I just got a podium! If it goes bad I can blame it on the post race jitters."
Daniel holds up his hands and shrugs. "You're a grown man. Do what you want."
Pierre studies the photo, scrutinizing the way his hair was plastered to his head and the awkward way he'd posed to keep anyone but himself out of the frame. It's his genuine smile that he knows will do you in, and ultimately the reason he sends it.
His phone is a lead weight clutched in his grip as he winds through the paddock, constantly stopped by vips and team members congratulating him. None of what anyone says registers, he just tries his best to match their mood and sputter praises about his team's contributions to his podium.
The snap you finally send back is only from the eyes up, but it's enough. He's surrounded by people in his driver room, but for ten seconds it might as well have just been him staring at a sliver of your face on a screen.
The tiny lines at the corners of your shining eyes tell him you're smiling, which is a step in the right direction even if you won't let him see your entire face. It's enough to reignite the hope that slumbered in his chest while waiting for you to pull the trigger and make a move.
He sends back a video of the people in the room, who cheer when they realize they're being filmed. 'Wish you were here,' is what he captions it and sends it without giving himself a chance to overthink.
Ten minutes pass with no reply.
The beer he’s already consumed have given him a pleasant buzz as well as an excuse to make a bad decision or two. He takes another video of the room to post to his Instagram story, 'Missing you' written in the lower left corner.
Fuck, he hopes you'll see it and regret leaving him on read. Instead all he gets is a text from Charles chastising him for stirring up drama.
Really Pierre?
Blame it on the alcohol, he texts back.
I know you aren’t drunk. You can’t form a coherent sentence when you are.
Guess i gotta drink more then
Pierre doesn’t turn anyone bearing alcohol away. He's two celebratory shots deep when Daniel finds him sulking in a corner. "You've got my girl texting me freaking out over your story. I've seen it and I gotta agree with her. Was that really necessary?"
"She left me on read," Pierre says like that was enough explanation. His head was spinning and it was getting hard to keep the room upright. "And it's the truth. I miss her like hell. I want her here. She was supposed to come, you know? I was gonna have her fly in with me on the jet. She doesn't start class again until June. I had this whole week planned out. I was gonna show her Texas- she’s from New York and..."
He trails off when he notes Dan’s pitying smile. Daniel sighs and runs a hand through his curls. "I know. I get it, okay? I know it's hard but you can't force it. You've gotta let her come back on her own, all you're doing now is pushing her away."
He was fucking clueless when it came to these things. He'd had you for a few precious moments and now that he'd lost you he didn't know how to act. His mind was running on hazy autopilot; he barely knew which way was up, let alone did he trust himself to make any sort of important decision.
He stares down at the shot he'd been handed at some point before throwing it back. The cheap whiskey burns his throat but he barely registers the sting. "Should I take it down?"
"She already saw it," Daniel says gently, as if he anticipates how bad the fuck up will hurt. And it does. It hits him like a tire wall at two hundred kph, knowing that you were probably ranting or crying on the phone with Daniel’s girlfriend. "But yeah, that's probably best. People are already wondering what happened between you two, no need to throw fuel on the fire."
"You're probably right-" Pierre cuts off when Charles arrives with a grimace on his face. He shakes his head and gives his friend’s shoulder a squeeze.
"For once I'm not the dumb one."
"You're a dick, you know that right?" Daniel says, allowing Pierre to delete the post. It takes him a few tries before he gets it down, but undeniably rumors will be circulating in the morning if they weren’t already.
"Honestly what were you thinking?" Charles demands, edging towards full blown yelling. "I told you to leave her be. The gossip stemming from this isn’t gonna help.”
The last thing he needed was someone else telling him how stupid his decision had been. At least Daniel had the decency to show sympathy.
"Honestly?" Pierre responds with the same intensity, his anger flaring. "Honestly, Charles, I was thinking that she was happy for me but was too afraid to take the leap. She haunts me. Every second I’m awake I have to force myself away from her. Even when I’m asleep I can’t get away from her. So I don’t know, maybe I wanted to haunt her too."
“This isn’t the way you win her back and you know it.”
“I know!” Pierre throws up his hands. “But what else am I supposed to do? She won’t talk to me. She has no problem talking to Max or Daniel but apparently she draws the line at me.”
“You know it’s not-” Daniel's eyes flick to his phone and he fights back a grin. All it does is remind Pierre that he lost the person that could bring that sort of smile to his own face. "Fellas I wish I could stay and help but I gotta get going. Charles, I think Pierre needs another drink." He slaps five American dollars in the Monegasque's hand. "First one is on me."
Pierre is too deep in a spiral to care when his friend drags him from the party to a bar just south of the circuit. Somehow it was within walking distance; the floor was sticky and the lighting was for shit but he didn't care.
Pierre's focus was on downing shot after shot, erasing the broken image of you his mind had conjured up. He never should have posted the story. It only served to feed into what the media had been speculating for the past week and dredged up more tension between you.
Pierre stops checking his phone two shots later. The liquor provides a wet blanket over his senses, dousing him in cold water and scrambling his brain. He could barely remember his own name, but yours still lived in the corner of his mind.
Even drunk, he refused to forget you.
Two hours and who knows how much alcohol later, Charles helps Pierre back to his hotel room.
Pierre falls asleep as soon as he hits the mattress, head too blurry to dredge up memories of you.

dina for the character thing 👀
This got kind of long so...
First impression
The first time I watched the dance trailer, I wasn’t sure what to think. I was fuckin HYPED that Ellie had a gf, and I figured if Ellie likes her then she has to be cool. But of course I saw that Ellie was wearing her bracelet and became PANIK. And also knowing the game was going to be a revenge story I was so afraid that Dina was going to die.  I was like are they really going to kill off every girl Ellie kisses?
Kind of only semi related, but I remember a really early interview where Halley Gross mentioned that she “got someone pregnant”, and I was like “well they didn’t establish that Dina was with a dude before Ellie for nothing.” So I had a hunch Dina was going to be pregnant since the beginning. I was super excited at the idea of Ellie having a kid 👀
Impression now
QUEEN
GODDESS
DESERVES A DLC OR A WHOLE SPINOFF GAME TO HERSELF
But seriously, I think she’s an amazing character, even though she’s not in the majority of the game, they managed to give her so much backstory and history. I’m also really glad she stands on her own and isn’t just “the love interest”.
Favorite moment
God so hard to choose. If I have to though, the one where she shoots the guy through the roof. Because what a badass. She got blown up, fell off a bridge, fought through soldiers, and somehow climbed up to the roof.
Idea for a story
My first thought was to list of one my AU ideas, but I’ll use my idea for a Dina DLC (and then post my AUs).
My idea for a Dina DLC would be very similar to Left Behind, with switching back and forth between the past and present. It would start off when they get separated on Day 1.
You’d play as Dina and fight through the WLF to get to Ellie. You’d get a second of downtime and Dina would be reminded of a time when her, Talia, and their mother were running from/fighting some Ravens (that was the name of the gang in NM right???). It would be more of a stealth based thing, since you’d be just a lil 10 year old Dina. At the end, it would be the part where Dina had to kill the guy attacking her mom. She’d be super upset about her first time killing someone, and her mom and sister would have to comfort her. It would switch back to current time when she’d go back to mowing people down without a second thought.
Then the next part would maybe be set on Day 2, while Ellie is out looking for Tommy. Dina would be worried about Ellie of course, and upset over not being able to help her. Some WLFs would roll through, and see the lights on and investigate. Dina would have to fight them off alone. The flashback sequence to for this would be right after her mother dies. Her and Talia would have just buried her. That night they’re both still grieving, then get spotted by some Ravens. They can’t run, so they have to fight. During this Dina would be angry and be really savage in the way she fights and the things she says. It would be a way to show that she does understand how Ellie is feeling at that moment.
After that would be some Gentle Farm Time. It would be mostly like the farm section in the main game. Taking care of JJ, farming, and herding sheep. But we’d get to see a lot of Ellie’s flashbacks and outbursts. It would give us not only a deeper look into that, but a better understanding of Dina’s traumas and how she handles them, and puts Ellie and JJ before her own self.
The last part would show Dina adjusting to post-Ellie life. She’d be working toward a job doing something really important to Jackson, maybe an electrician. Maybe the final battle would be some Hunters attacking the dam. She can still fight, but prefers not to if possible. The very last scene would be her at home with JJ. There’s a knock at the door, then it cuts to black. We all know who it is, but it ends ambiguously just like the main games.
As for my ridiculous AU Dinas...
There’s the poor Dina with her very chronically ill son, the pro gamer AU where Ellie is her #1 rival, my TLoU3 concept Dina, the Apex Legends crossover (lmao) Dina who is techie/medic, the Flower Shop AU Dina...
The stripper AU
We really need to post our AU masterlist sometime.
Unpopular opinion
I don’t even know. I think most people generally think she’s a great character, and I agree. If anyone disagrees I’ll fight them myself.
Favorite relationship
Ellie of course.
They’re relationship is just so amazing. Like where do I even begin?? They compliment each other so well, but have so many similarities. They’re both so strong and capable.
Favorite headcanon
Her faith grows stronger after Seattle. I still don’t think she’d be SUPER religious, but I think that having that familiarity would be comforting for her to fall back on after everything she went through. It would also be a wonderful way to help JJ connect to his grandmother and aunt.
She tells Ellie she’s “not much of a believer”, yet her home is full of Jewish symbols and books. I even noticed they have mezuzah on most of their doors.
I also hc that once Ellie returns, she would see how much it helped Dina manage and take an interest and eventually convert herself.

Told primarily in Sondheim’s own words from dozens of interviews spanning decades, the film is a highly personal profile of a great American artist as revealed through the creation and performance of six of his songs. It features rarely seen archival performance footage and original staged productions – created exclusively for this film – with stars including Audra McDonald, Darren Criss, America Ferrera and more.

With the help of Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) and a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, Harley tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of Doom. Don’t worry – she’s got this. Or does she? In Season 2, Harley has defeated the Joker, and Gotham City is hers for the taking…what’s left of it, that is. Her celebration in the newly created chaos is cut short when Penguin, Bane, Mr. Freeze, The Riddler and Two-Face join forces to restore order in the criminal underworld. Calling themselves the Injustice League, they’re intent on keeping Harley and her crew from taking control as the top villains in Gotham.

By day, Mark Hunter (Christian Slater) is a painfully shy new kid in a small Arizona town. But by night, he’s Hard Harry, the cynical, uncensored DJ of a pirate radio station. Idolized by his high school classmates (who are unaware of his real identity), Harry becomes a hero with his fiercely funny monologues on sex, love, and rock and roll. But when he exposes the corrupt school principal, she calls in the FCC to shut Harry down. An outrageous rebel with a cause, Slater gives a brilliant performance as the reluctant hero who inspires his classmates to find their own voices of rebellion and individuality. A movie with a message, Pump Up the Volume is a raw and witty celebration of free speech that will make you laugh, make you cheer and make you think.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” Charles Dickens’ tale of love and tumult during the French Revolution comes to the screen in a sumptuous film version by the producer famed for nurturing sprawling literary works: David O. Selznick (David Copperfield, Anna Karenina, Gone with the Wind). Ronald Colman (The Prisoner of Zenda) stars as Sydney Carton – sardonic, dissolute, a wastrel…and destined to redeem himself in an act of courageous sacrifice. “It's a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done,” Carton muses at that defining moment. This is far, far better filmmaking too: a Golden Era marvel of uncanny performances top to bottom, eye-filling crowd scenes (the storming of the Bastille, thronged courtrooms, an eerie festival of public execution) and lasting emotional power. Revolution is in the air!
NEW 2021 1080p HD master! BABY DOLL (1956) Run Time             114:00 Subtitles               English SDH Audio Specs        DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 - English, MONO - English Aspect Ratio       1.85:1, 16 X 9 Letterbox Product Color    BLACK & WHITE Disc Configuration           BD 50

Times are tough for cotton miller Archie (Karl Malden), but at least he has his child bride (Carroll Baker), who’ll soon be his wife in title and truth. The one-year agreement keeping them under the same roof – yet never in the same bed – is about to end. But a game with a sly business rival (Eli Wallach) is about to begin. In Baby Doll, as in A Streetcar Named Desire, director Elia Kazan and writer Tennessee Williams broke new ground in depicting sexual situations – earning condemnation from the then-powerful Legion of Decency. They earned laurels too: four Academy Award® nominations, Golden Globe® Awards for Baker and Kazan, and a British Academy Award for Wallach. Watch this funny, steamy classic that, as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide proclaims, “still sizzles.”
NEW 2021 1080p HD master from nitrate preservation elements! Romantic drama combines with humor, starpower combines with lavish spectacle and the walls come tumbling down! This Academy Award-winning extravaganza’s street-splitting, brick-cascading, fire-raging recreation of the cataclysmic earthquake remains "one of the greatest action sequences in the history of the cinema, rivalling the chariot race in both Ben-Hurs" (Adrian Turner, Time Out Film Guide).
Clark Gable plays rakish Barbary Coast kingpin Blackie Norton. Jeanette MacDonald portrays a singer torn by her love for Blackie and her need to succeed among the operagoing elite. Earning the first of nine career Best Actor Oscar® nominations,* Spencer Tracy is a priest who supplements spiritual advice with a mean right hook. He urges Blackie to change. But if love and religion can't reform Blackie, Mother Nature will.

From novel (by Edna Ferber) to Broadway smash (by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II) to three film versions (1929, 1936, 1951) to stage revivals. Like Ol’ Man River, Show Boat just keeps rollin’ along. Produced by Arthur Freed and directed by George Sidney, this 1951 version of the saga of riverboat lives and loves has glorious stars (Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Marge and Gower Champion) in Technicolor® radiance, a made-from-scratch 170-foot paddle wheeler, timeless songs and an equally timeless outcry against racial bigotry. “This was music that would outlast Kern’s day and mine,” Ferber said in recalling her first reaction to hearing “Ol’ Man River.” She was right as rain.

Talent agent Doug Blake (Jack Carson) is giving 100% to earn his 10%. He walks away from his arrogant singing star (Lee Bowman) and scrambles to discover another who will shine even brighter. He finds effervescent songstress Martha Gibson. Doris Day plays Martha. Think she has a chance? During the shooting of Day’s first film (Romance on the High Seas), director Michael Curtiz was sure the sparkling newcomer had much more than a chance and set the wheels in motion for My Dream Is Yours. Curtiz dots his film with authentic Hollywood locales (including the fabled Schwab’s Pharmacy). And Bugs Bunny himself hops into a dream sequence. Welcome to the Dream Factory. Make it yours.

Special Features: 'Let's Sing a Song About the Moonlight' vintage short; Classic Cartoon 'A Hound for Trouble'; Original Theatrical Trailer (HD)
Not since Judy met the boy next door in St. Louis has there been a heaping of tuneful, romantic Midwestern American life like this! Doris Day and Gordon MacRae team for spoonin’, croonin’ and swoonin’ On Moonlight Bay, based on Booth Tarkington’s Penrod stories. “Try not to walk like a first baseman,” Mama (Rosemary DeCamp) tells tomboy Marjorie (Day) as she prepares to date college man Bill (MacRae). The advice takes. The lovebirds hear wedding bells ahead, just as soon as Bill gets his sheepskin. But World War I rages “over there.” And Papa (Leon Ames) rages at home after a flap with his prospective son-in-law. Will harmony return to this Hoosier home? Surely Day and MacRae will make musical harmony. And On Moonlight Bay will have you sailing along.

My Pokemon Shield team!
Decided to use my Friends OC as the character I play in Shield because she's british and well this IS the british region so it fits.
So I've beaten pokemon Shield, finished about 90% of the Dex, and have gotten about a third of the way through Sword, and for the most part, I'm having fun with it. I say, despite the bad news that kept pouring over the last few weeks, it has enough good things to keep it fun and fresh. That said, there are some issues because not everything is perfect, and I'll detail the pros and cons I find with most of the important things about the game. Keep in mind I'm not a professional in the industry. I'm a casual fan who likes to collect Pokemon and a fan of the creature design. That said, let's get into it.
TLDR: Pokemon SWSH is good; its good on the things it improves on and adds to make the game more helpful to the grind, but it has many short cuts that make certain features tedious and time-consuming. Buy the game for the new mons and quality of life improvements. Don't buy if you expect everything to carry over from previous titles.
The Dex:
Of course, I have to talk about this as it was the biggest thing that started to change people's minds about SWSH and is a controversy that continued till release. For me, when I heard it, I didn't care because, for me, the only Pokemon I care about are the new ones. My team for each game is only the new Pokemon (including the alola and galar forms). But I do understand why people are upset because once pokemon home comes around, no doubt pokemon bank will close and you'll HAVE to switch them over and thus not be able to use Pokemon you've had for a while until they get added in future games. Which could be years. But let's switch gears and talk about what was added. Then just over 80 new pokemon, not including galarian forms. Now, this isn't the smallest amount of new mons we've had. XY had the least, but it still disappointing that there aren't that many new ones. BUT the new mons we got are fun and creative. I have many new favs, and GOD do I love that they brought back regional forms and made them better! obstagoon isn't the only one that got a region-based evolution, and I LOVE that they brought more. I think one of the unique things about Pokemon from most other monster catcher type shows and games is evolution and a big disappointment for me is whenever there is a pokemon with no evolutions because it feels like there's no potential and it's boring, and yes there is no-evolution pokemon among the new mons. My final note, though, is that there are more new evolution gimmicks, and I am not a fan, stones? Okay, friendship? Annoying but with berries, it can help. Trade? It can be annoying if you don't have friends, but you can use the GTS (OH WAIT :( ILL GET INTO THAT LATER), but making it, so yanmask needs 49+ damage AND can only evolve in a specific spot? FOR SHAME.
Wild area and Dynamax dens:
The one thing that was advertised the most, the thing that was in basically every trailer and hammered to death, the wild are. SO how is it after all this hyper? It's okay.
Pros:
It's big, way bigger then I thought, I thought it was just that beginning area in front of motorstroke but nope! Way bigger.
The wild area is split up into sections that each has their spawns and weather separate from the rest. This allows you to build a variety of teams early on; you don't have to wait till the end of the game to get an Ice-type or Dragon-type. If it's snowing in one section, there will be plenty of Ice-type mons.
The Dynamax dens are a great way to help the grind that pokemon games tend to have. Not only do you have a chance to get rare mons, but you get EXP candies which help level up your mons from 100 exp to 100,000 exp, so you can use those to level up mons you don't plan to use but need the evolutions for their Pokedex entries! It helps simplify the grind and tediousness of the grind.
Cons:
It's very tiresome to travel around, there are many hills and slopes you can't move through and have to take the path around it, which gets annoying very quickly, especially if you are trying to get into the water, but you can only access it from a lower level, what would've been nice is a rock climbing upgrade for the bike so you can traverse up the cliffs and cut downtime.
Overworld pokemon aggro too much and get in the way. They are a lot of Pokemon that can only be caught in grass, and the way you have to trigger a grass pokemon is by moving in the tall grass, the problem is the Pokemon that some pokemon that wander around will notice and charge at you, stopping your progress until you end the fight. It gets in the way, and from I've seen, there's no item to make them ignore you.
Weather spawns, one worry I had when I heard about the changing weather feature was that some pokemon are locked into only appearing during particular weather, and sadly I was right, but it's even worse! Not only is that true, BUT some mons can only be gotten in individual sections too! So there's an even smaller chance at getting them! Weather also is daily, and every section can get nearly every single weather effect, so it could be literal weeks until you get the one weather effect you need in that one section for your damn Pokedex.
GMAX raids are too infrequent, one of the big things that made people get on the side of Dynamaxing was the introduction of Gigantamaxing, which is just mega evolution with extra steps, but you can only get them from raids. Except for Charizard, Eevee, Pikachu, and Meowth. And they are a very low chance even with the event going on that increases some of the spawns.
The Wild area is a good idea which they will hopefully explore and improve in future games, but only time will tell.
Pokemon Camp:
The new substitute after Pokemon refresh. And it's okay, leaning towards Tedious.
Pros:
It's fun to see the Pokemon interact and run along and even play fetch with them, Cute and fun,
Cooking curry increases their EXP, friendship, and restores their health. So it's very convenient if you don't want to use potions or don't even have them.
Cons:
No way to level up affection quickly, in Pokemon Amie, you had those special cupcakes, and in Refresh, you had the rainbow beans. Not in this one, though, it's all involves the two toys you get. And it's slow and tedious after the 500th stick wiggle.
Getting berries for curry is tedious; this is part of the wild area problem, but there is no way to farm berries you need for specific curry, or in general, SM and USUM had the poke pelago which was a great addition especially the berry farm. But there is nothing to help with that in this game, so you have to resort to being lucky to get the berry you need from a tree and not be attacked by the squirrel.
No clear way of how to get the best rating for curry. It warns you about speed before your first curry session, but there are nothings to indicate how fast or slow you need to be for each section, additionally if you are using a controller, you can't stir as quickly as using each Switch controller separately.
Pokemon camp feels like a simplified pokemon refresh with a few improvements but not enough to streamline the process.
The starters:
Now about a week or so before the release, the whole Pokedex was leaked, including the starters, which stirred up controversy due to how they look compared to most other gens. I think they're fine. Each has its positives and negatives like every other gen. For me, Rillaboom is the best because it has a freaking drum set and is a big hunky boy. Then why did I not choose it as my starter for the pic above? Because of my complaint about the starters. They aren't dual-type, So they had no guarantee they could learn other move types from their base type, which for the most part, is true unless you use TMS or TRS. So it was either Intelleon or Cinderace because grass-type has so many weaknesses. I went with Intelleon because Cinderace just looked the most boring to me? It looks like a rabbit wearing pants, not that I don't get the theme, which is Cinderace as a soccer player, but still, it was engaging to me. Intelleon stirred up controversy due to its smug look and big hands, but I saw someone explain why he might be like that which helped warm me up to him, It's based on a lizard that is long and lean with big hands, and most likely is based on a spy theme. Especially with that official art of it doing a dodge with a finger gun attack (which it has in the game), so that made him more interesting to me. I think the biggest problem with Intelleon was that is has nothing to do with sobble's gimmick. Scorbunny kicks? Turns into a soccer player. Grookey using a stick to hit things? Turns into a drummer. Sobble cries a lot? Turns...into...a spy? Like the crying thing doesn't play into his final form at all, and that is probably why people were so off-put by the idea. Honestly, I say some of Drizzles design should've been for sobble. That way, it could help learn into the edgy lizard design. But I think the BIGGEST problem with the starters is that WE DIDN'T GET TO SEE THEM BEFORE RELEASE. I'm okay with not showing all Pokemon, but the starters are NEEDED. It's the first Pokemon we get and will spend hours leveling up. I honestly think the leaks helped save the game because if we didn't know the final evolves before the release and found out after, many more people would have been upset. The leaks helped give people a week to process and get used to them.
That's enough about the Pokemon, let's get into the story elements.
Rivals:
This game has three Rivals, and each represents the arch-type of Rival we have gotten over the years. Hop represents the friendly Rival who fights to get to know you and become strong with his Pokemon. Marnie represents the Rivals who are kind and respectful to you but also battle to be competitive and prove themselves. Bede represents the asshole Rivals, the ones who, no matter how much you beat them, they think they're better than you and won't shut up about it, but they might have a tragic past that makes up for them being jerks. My favorite is Hop, mostly because he gets the most development and because I like the friendly Rivals. It started for me in XY actually, when you got that group of friends it was nice because ironically in a game about companionship with pocket monsters, you're very alone. You only see your Mons when you fight or use Amie, Refresh, and Camp. So having a friend come around every once in a while feels nice and helps that feeling of loneliness. Anyways Bede and Marnie are nice but don't get enough time, but they serve their purpose.
Gym battles:
I love what they've done with the gyms; they are spectacles thanks to the crowd, the music (by toby fox C:), and Dynamxing makes each gym battle feel as epic as it should be. The pre-gym fight challenges and activities range from okay too annoying (looking at you pinball and collapsing trap puzzles), but they serve their purpose for getting more EXP before the final fight.
There is no Elite four, which makes sense since the game builds up Lee as the champion. Even without the Elite four, I do like the tournament aspect, it makes sense for the region, and you still fight four powerful trainers.
The antagonists:
Spoilers alert, if most of what I said isn't already a spoiler. Team yell felt disappointing; they weren't involved that much unless to block off an area until you beat a gym or something. But I did like Piers and Marnie's relationship that developed from around the team. Rose and Oleanna were great because Rose had charisma and was generally kind, so you can see why he gained the respect of the region. And his plan makes sense, but he went about it the wrong way by rushing and imprisoning a pokemon that caused a significant problem years ago. Oleanna was a treat because of how dedicated and stone-cold she was, and when she battled you, her expressions were priceless. Sordward and Shielbert were total jerks, and it was satisfying enough to beat them. The antagonists are alright, I say the plan from Rose came in a bit last minute, but it was still a good threat.
The story:
Now Pokemon stories aren't complicated; You want to become champion, you get a Rival, the evil team gets in your way, so you get dragged into a major conspiracy, you beat them along your journey and then become champion. There can be things to read into, and development for some characters that make them exciting and put simply, SWSH follows the same formula. I think the best part is Hop's journey, and seeing Sonia grow as well, most of the other major players don't change all that much till the end of the game. So it's not a bad story, just the same formula as before. It IS a kid's game so that I wouldn't expect anything complicated anyway.
The end game story:
This is where Sordward and Shielbert are introduced, and they fill the role of villains who only care about themselves if you didn't like what they did with Rose. Sadly they weren't introduced or even mentioned throughout the game, so it's not as fulfilling to beat them due to them just appearing out of nowhere. My only problem is that we have to go to every gym to fight dynamaxed Pokemon, but we don't get to capture them, and its a long road till we get to catch the game legendary finally.
The story offers new aspects, but for the most part, follows a formula, so don't expect something complicated or nuanced. Now on to the technicals.
Improvements:
They have made quite a few quality of life improvements that have helped make things tighter and more comfortable to access.
In battle, they made it so you can press X to go to pokeballs quickly for easy catching.
The PC link box. You no longer have to travel back and forth between poke centers to get Pokemon from the box so you can level and evolve them, now you can access it on your person anywhere which is convenient and handy.
The name rater, move reminder, and deleter is all the same person and in every poke-center at no additional cost too!
From SM-Lets go, there were ride Pokemon that took up the task of the bike and the Hm moves, which was great! No more annoying Hm moves you couldn't get rid of and had to have to move around the world. Now it's improved further with the bike being able to slip between land and seas without any menus, you get the ability to fly very early, AND there's nothing for strength, cut or flash. Less tediousness and more easy-to-access features, thank you.
You can organize the menus to your preferred order. The bag is easier to understand, and you can favorite things and organize it by favorites so you'll always be able to see them. There are more options in the settings to help skip through dialogue-heavy parts and make the game more accessible to get through if you want.
Bad advertising:
I think one of the things that hurt the game pre-release is that the advertising was crap, barely any of the improvements were shown outside of the wild area and Dynamaxing. I mentioned before how stupid it was that we didn't get to see the evolutions for the damn starters. I don't mind that we didn't get to see all the new Pokemon, I like the surprise, but we should've seen at least the other exclusives, so help people decided what to buy. I do say you shouldn't show everything, but the starters and exclusives are necessary for people to decided what to buy and who they are going to choose.
The worst thing about the game:
Now I can see the problem with Dexit, and I can see the problem with the battle animations, BUT I believe the worst part about the game is the Ycomm feature. It's the replacement for the multiplayer menu from the DS games, and it brought over the worst feature from let's go. No Global trade System. So if you're looking for exclusives or low percentage chance pokemon well you're on your own, there's nothing to help you find the Pokemon you need. There's link trade and surprise trade and no way to specify what you want if you have a friend who got the other game, then your lucky. If you don't have any friends? Well, your fucked, sucks for you, you friendless loser lol lol. That's not it, though, and there's no friends list either. You have to use a four-digit link code, which by the way a random can also use it as well. But you know what they do have? League card trading section, League cards are fun and cute but a section to getting them from randoms when it means nothing? Pointless, that slow should've been for the GTS or at least a friend list section. They do have a way to search through stamps so you can find battles or trades and even Dynamax dens, though! Oh wait... the list barely updates frequently enough until the person searching for a raid team has either quit or started anyway, but the game won't tell you that until you attempt to join!
Pokemon Sword and Shield is a good game with shortcuts and flaws that are tedious and frustrating, but the improvements and good things that were added make up for its shortcomings. Heres hoping next year's game will carry over the good changes and improve on SWSH faults.

For all the new things, I kinda wished they showed all of this before SwSh was released, now it's a bit more pricey and I feel like it's kinda rushed. Also for the Mystery Dungeon, I'm excited for that bit I really hope that include all the starters and non starters as well in the final.
I wish they went ahead and pushed back SaS so it’d be released 2020, with this expansion back already included, and the new places we go to can be unlocked during our adventure or as postgame. I would’ve fine waiting and would’ve preferred it, especially to give them a chance to do more with the main story which is pretty weak and made little sense, and Rose was a very forced in villain. Also made no sense in the story climax. Watching playthroughs and seeing the climax of SaS I’m just...
Tumblr media
Its also frustrating that you get to hear about things happening and not actually witness or help. Like, its nice having adults acknowledge that you’re a kid, don’t worry about it we’ll handle it, but at the same time, that’s a chunk of story we have a right to see, and we’re kids in this game, we don’t always do what adults say we should follow and see what’s going on. That could’ve been something optional. Go to event to see what’s happening or skip it to go to the next gym.
And this is turning into a rant so I’m going to put this below. For those that just want to read my comments on Mystery Dungeon, scroll down till you get to the Pikachu gif, I’ll talk about it below.
Also there could’ve been improvements with the rivals. Marnie is suuuuper intriguing and I love her, Bede I also like though that’s more me missing mean rivals and man, he’s a brat and I say that with affection. But in the grand scheme of things, they felt pointless. More could’ve been done to include them. And Hop. God, Hop. I know people like him, but from what I’ve seen, he seems like the most annoying “friend rival” made to date. He does not know what personal space is. He waits for you in front of gyms. He waits for you on new routes. He has to comment on almost every move you make in your fights with him.
I don’t even own the games but just from the playthroughs I’ve watched I’m just... go away. Leave the lead alone. Everywhere you turn, he’s there, waiting for you. It also feels like he only got endorsed because he’s Leon’s younger brother. There’s nothing about him that I like. And, I don’t know why he gets the other wolf legendary? What makes him worthy? What makes him want to be a Professor in the future? That’s out of nowhere.
Something more could’ve been done with Hop, maybe an arc of him resenting you a little because every match you beat him, and he’s the Champion’s younger brother and you just seem to stay ahead. Maybe let us have more scene of him talking with Sonia since he’s going to be her future assistant. If he’s going to be constantly stalking us and waiting for us, then yeah, let’s at least better build up where his character will go.
Then there’s the issue of pokemon. With it pretty much confirmed they just reused models from gen 7, yeah, there’s no reason to not include more pokemon. If not the National Dex, which wouldn’t bother me too much, then go ahead and add about half. At most, I’d love pokemon included that would make the most sense. Like, lion is a big symbol throughout all of Europe. There should be a lion in Galar, either Litleo or Shinx returning if not a new lion pokemon. And with the expansion packs, yeah, they’re already adding 200 each pack.
And a lot of this dlc should already be in the game. If 400 pokemon are going to be added in, they should already be there. The new Giga forms should already be there and we should’ve seen the Giga Venusaur and Blastoise the same time as Charizard.
I’m also salty that there’s no going to Kalos. Maybe it’ll be a future expansion, and that’s a dlc I wouldn’t mind, but those are two very linked countries they’re based on. And Galar truly isn’t a big region. The Wild Area isn’t as big as it could be. Like, it doesn’t have to be BotW big, but it could’ve been bigger than what we got. And if not expanding the Wild Area, we could’ve had Kalos as a new region to go to, and more gyms for us to do.
ALSO.
I am not a fan of you refacing the gyms and having them act as your “Elite Four”.
They’ve already been fought. Aside from the first two, you’ve already fought all the star Giga forms they have. Its a really lazy decision. At least, you can have the two first gym leaders come in since you didn’t fight their star Giga forms, and include the other two version exclusive gym leaders as the other two. Just for some freshness in this final challenge.
I know they’re not big on voice acting, but, they should’ve put some form of VA into these games. Its a little awkward to get animated cutscenes and there’s no voices coming forth. And its at its worst when you get to Piers and you see him singing away, I presume loudly, into his mic and its just awkward cause there’s no voice and you can hear him tapping his foot to the music and its just so off putting to watch cause something is missing: a voice! And you know what’s the kicker? Pokemon has included voice acting before.

youtube
There is no reason to not do something similar, at least for Piers’ intro so its not so awkward to watch.
And then post game... the official post game... I, I honestly can’t say what is even going on? Those two blonde bimbos, those designs, who agreed to pass them? For sword guy, I don’t know whether I should be laughing or uncomfortable. Its like, an in between especially when his hair flops around. Also, their reasoning, they’re causing chaos in Galar because they didn’t like a book Sonia wrote???
The villains in these games are just so dumb.
Like, Rose had a good motive but, he is still forced in. And he activates the climax for no reason. He was promised by Leon that he would help with Eternatus, all he had to do was wait through one match. One match that would’ve been 30 minutes at most, roughly. Yet he couldn’t wait for one match and went ahead and woke up Eternatus, does a video asking for help, and when you arrive, stops you for a battle that doesn’t make sense to have cause he asked for help why is he holding you up with a battle??
And Team Yell. Supposed to be like, a 2nd Team Skull and these guys could dream to live up to Team Skull. They can’t. They’re not funny or enjoyable at all. And my friend brought up a good point on the issue of having Team Yell based on punks when they’re supposed to be the “villainous” team. Punks, historically, were rebelling against an unfair system, they were progressive and revolutionary. They stood up for LBGT rights, they stood for having individual freedom, and just wanted to break the restrictions society wanted to place on people, let people express themselves and be who they want to be.
If you want Team Yell to be a 2nd Skull and play around with punks as their theme, then they should’ve been set up to be red herrings as well. Be wary at first and then later find that they have hearts of gold, and mean well, even if they can be a tad extreme sometimes. And maybe they can help build up the danger of Rose, who in turn wants to paint them in with a bad image since they’re going against him and what’s normal in society.
Anyway... Sword and Shield honestly should’ve been pushed back. They should’ve been saved for 2020, or even 2021, or however how much time they need. I would’ve been fine waiting. A lot of fans would be. But what we got wasn’t worth the $60 it was being sold at, and definitely not worth the $90 its being sold at with the expansion packs, and as far as I know, these are very, very small areas to explore. Cause as we’ve seen with SaS, they built it up to be big and grand and, well, the Wild Area was smaller than expected and the whole was far shorter than expected. You could beat it in 20 hours roughly.
I even have mixed feelings on there being no enhanced version, cause these games do have potential, they just needed more time and polish, and then it could’ve worth the $60 price. But also thankful that there’s not another 2nd version and we may be getting a few expansion packs instead.
Though I do think a lot they’re bringing in should already be in the game.
Anyway, enough ranting about Sas, onto Mystery Dungeon!
Tumblr media
Demo I think could’ve been a little longer, they stop you before you go on the Skarmory mission, I think it could’ve been a better placement to end after the Skarmory mission.
Anyway, I like the changes so far. I love you can choose a different pokemon if you don’t like what you got from the test. I love that you have an updated move pool, though I feel kinda OP but you also kinda need it for these games cause I remember them being so hard and as a starter that can’t evolve till like, post game, yeah you’re going to need that help. I love that you get to wear a little scarf. Design wise, a little weird at first but it grew on me. Kinda reminds me of Okami.
By trailer, for sure they’re adding more pokemon in. Lucario is seen in the team, when before, you only saw Lucario as a statue in Red Blue, I believe? Its been a long time. But they only had Gen 1-3 in RB, and Lucario is there so I would think they’d add in a lot more pokemon.
For starters, I’m hopeful that beating the game, if you replay, you’ll get more options for the starters to play as and have as your partner. I’d loooove to have a chance to play as Popplio. Mega Evolution is confirmed, I wonder if regional forms would also be playable, like if we could evolve into Alolan Marowak or be one of the other two regional Meowths. Otherwise, everyone you could be in the old game is there, with no gender restriction! You can be a female Cubone! A male Eevee! A female Cyndaquil! I’m so happy about that since as a kid, I wanted to play Cyndaquil but never got it in the test and had to look it up and was bummed that it was male only and I wanted to be a girl.
My biggest hope though is that with this, we’ll have a chance to play two player, since you have a team of two usually, and your friend or sibling or SO can play your partner.
I am pleasantly surprised with it so far, though I will be holding off when its released in a few months, just going to listen to all reviews once they beat the game and if its very positive, cause SaS had a strong start and then went down hill with Gamefreak rushing it and cutting corners. I’m hopeful for this remake but cautious still.

Can I Join You?
BY: @pusantheamazonian
Fandom: Stranger Things            Jim Hopper x Reader
Based on that tiny clip of season 3 trailer where Hopper is sitting alone at a restaurant.
Tumblr media
It's been fifteen minutes waiting outside the restaurant alone and your brother still hasn't shown up yet. You had actually dressed up nice, in your favorite Y/F/C dress.
Not waiting anymore you head inside to the hostess stand. Before you can speak you see something that hurts your own heart. The man you saw entering the restaurant when you pulled in. Is sitting alone in the middle of the restaurant. It's obvious that whoever the other seat was reserved for is a no show. As if they've stood him up. He's not bad looking or anything, he's actually kind of adorable. In his peach and mint colored shirt and khaki jacket.
But it's when he angrily lights a cigarette you ignore the hostess and make a straight line to him. It's a sadness that you know too well.
"Hi. Um do you mind if I join you?" Nervously you point at the empty chair.
"What?" He looks up startled.
"Can I join you for dinner? I'm alone and it looks like you're alone. I thought you might like some company."
"Yeah.. sure."  Fumbling  he quickly straightens in the chair. "My name's Jim."
"Y/N." You give him a smile as you sit down.
"You from Hawkins?"
"No, I live just outside Upland."
"Ah Upland the fighting Rams. Hawkins and Upland were the biggest rivals."
"They still are for some reason." Nodding you awkwardly place the napkin in your lap.
"What brings you here?"
"My brother is here for work so I decided to come visit. He's the one who stood me up for dinner."
"Well… as you can see my date never showed." He gives an I'm definitely not stressed smile.
"Sorry about that." He instantly waves off your apology.
"It's not your fault but it's the last time I let a coworker set me up."
"See that's where you went wrong. Cause now it's going to be awkward at work."
"Yeah well that's how it goes."
The waiter appears and you both just radle off the first thing you see. Before this night becomes a disaster you might as well break the ice.
"Well do you live by yourself or have children?"
"A daughter."
"How old?"
"Thirteen."
"Oh I remember those days. Hormones and hating everyone." Nodding you take a sip of water.
Chuckling he pulls out a photo from his wallet.
"My daughter Jane." He shows you a picture of him and a brown haired girl. When he leans in you notice how his eyes soften when talking about her. She must be his whole world.
"Awe she's adorable! I'm loving the outfit." She is wearing a black romper with colored dinosaurs on it. "Is she relaxing at home tonight?"
"She's with her friends. Every Friday night they play DnD or whatever it is."  Shrugging he doesn't really remember the name.
"It's called Dungeons and Dragons, but most people call it DnD for short."
"You know what that is?" He's shocked, obvious by the way his eyes widened.
"Yeah I used to play it back in highschool. My character was a Ranger Changeling named Sirx. Who liked to pretend they were an elf." He gives you a confused look. "Older brothers."
"Older brothers can be a dangerous thing."
"Dangerous to some." Smiling you visibly see him relax. Which relaxes you.
The night goes on and the awkwardness goes away. You're chatting as if you haven't seen each other in years. Ignoring the time and looks from the staff as it gets late. It's not until the server puts the check down do you both look at the time. It's almost time for them to close.
You both reach for the check but you pull it away first. "No I got it. I intruded and asked you about dinner."
"I was already here. I can't let you do that." Shaking his head he reaches for it again.
"I said no." Giving him a stern look he finally backs off.
"You have a mean look. But I get the check next time."
"Next time?" Surprised you double check that he really just said that.
"Well yeah… if you want." Shrugging he avoids eye contact.
"I would love to."
After paying for the check and having him accompany you to the car. You swap numbers and hope he does call you next week. All the while trying to resist hungrily staring at his body.
~
Hopper is barely able to open the door.
"You're late." El states from the couch. Flipping through the TV channels. "Johnathan dropped me off."
"I know. Sorry that I didn't call." Taking off the jacket, he moves to grab a beer.
"How was the date?"
"Uh..they didn't show up." Shrugging he tossed the lid on the counter.
"Why are you late?" Ignoring the TV El turns around.
"Well that's the thing. I was going to leave when someone asked if they could have dinner with me. I said yes and that's why I'm late."
"You like them?"
"Yeah she seems nice and all but I don't know. The original date was just to get Flo off my back."
"Friends don't lie." El puts him on the receiving end of an angry stare.
"Yes…" Internally groaning he hates it when she pulls that card. "She's cute and I had fun. But I don't think now's the time for dating. We just got you enrolled in school and have to make sure you keep up."
"Everyone else has a Dad and Mom. But that's okay this is still home." With a huff and a little bit of a cold shoulder
"Seriously? You're starting a fight because you want someone else here?"
"Everyone has two parents except me and Will."
"Sorry, but I haven't been in a stable relationship for years."
"Why?"
".... After Sara… I-I blamed myself. I pushed everyone away and my wife divorced me."
"Divorce?"
"Uh to permanently leave, a government legal word meaning to stay away after two people don't want to be married anymore."
"Oh. Sorry."
"It's fine. Come on time for bed." Hop points.
"It's not a school night."
"Bed."
Groaning El sluggishly heads to bed grumbling about it being the weekend.
"Ah home sweet home." With a sigh he chugs the beer ready to hit the hay.
~
Unable to sleep Hop is up early making breakfast.
"Dad."
"What?"
"Mike and the rest are going to Crazy Pete's carnival tonight. Can I go?"
"How much? How long?"
"$10 for the ride pass. I don't know how long, but I figured I could stay with Max tonight. And you could call your date." Jim groans at the last comment. "What?"
"I'll make you a deal." El perks up when he turns. "You don't do anything dangerous or comment on my lack of dating. I will call her to see about another date after I drop you off."
"Deal."
"What's her name?"
"Y/N. Why?"
"Just wondering." El smiles sitting down at the table.
~
You're wandering around the carnival when you see Jim surrounded by a bunch of kids. Excited, you didn't expect to see him so soon. You notice one of the girls is his daughter. Approaching him you hear the conversation.
"Dude I'm a dollar short." The brown curly hair one says.
"Dustin!" Everyone groans.
"Well what do we have here? Six hoodlums whose low on funds and a grumpy father." You sneak up right beside Jim.
"Y/N? What are you doing here?" He about jumps out of his skin.
"Um it's a carnival? Why wouldn't I be here?" Holding back laughter you try to remain serious.
"See she gets it." Dustin sasses.
"What are you short a dollar for?" Nodding at the pile of coins.
"The unlimited ride pass." Another one says.
"Thought so, I'll be right back." Quickly walking to the ticket booth.
"Y/N? Is that her?" El now pesters.
"Yes."
"Who's Y/N?" Mike asks.
"My date last night." Hop grumbles.
Returning you hear the ooooooo's from the kids.
"Now let's see I have six wristbands and oh! Look there's six children here. How about we make a deal?"
"What kind of deal?" The redhead girl asks.
"How about you tell me your favorite color and you can have them."
"Blue." El blurts.
"And we have our first winner of the evening!" Smiling you hand a wrist band over. Once the others saw how serious you are. They couldn't say the color fast enough. Then like lightning they all bolt leaving you alone with Jim. One shouted later chief as they ran.
"You really got to stop that. You're going to make me look bad." Teasing you with a smile.
"Stop what?"
"Paying for everything."
"Eh don't worry about that, they're on the house."
"On the house? You work here?" Now he's confused.
"No. I work as a school secretary."
"Wait, does your brother work here?"
"Close. My brother owns the carnival."
"Owns the carnival? Crazy Pete is your brother?" He motions to the whole carnival.
"No. Crazy Pete is my uncle. My younger brother took over when he retired."
"You're not crazy. Good, just your brother and uncle."  Hop is a little jumbled at this news. You laugh at his response.
"No I'm not crazy… So what's with the whole Chief thing?"
"Oh I'm the chief of police here." Shrugging it off he starts walking waiting for you to catch up.
"Ah, so that's why people were staring even more when I sat down at dinner. Becoming the local gossip."
"Something like that. The old ladies say I don't play well with others and smoke too much, drink too much. Too much baggage."
"The normal reasons of gossip for any single people over twenty five."
"Yeah well I'm not twenty five." Huffing with a dissatisfied look. Obvious that he finds himself too old for this.
"Well what do you say? Want to take a walk around? Maybe hit the ferris wheel?" Eyebrows wiggling you hold up two more wristbands. Trying your best to instigate another date and just maybe some other less appropriate things. Cause he is still adorable as hell and the scruffy dad bod does things to you.
"Only if you win me a stuffed animal."

Since Anthem's release, there's been another uproar of fear and anxiety among the BioWare fandom concerning the future of the next Dragon Age title. Such statements are being thrown around like: "Has Anthem killed BioWare for good" & "We'll never see the likes of a Dragon Age 4."
All these remarks regarding the hypothetical future on Dragon Age 4 with no factual evidence don't come as a surprise because we all know that the BioWare fandom is generally in a constant state of worrying.
However, I've seen a few media outlets sharing a lot of the same sentiments regarding this fear for Dragon Age 4, generally they each outline that Anthem will be the death of BioWare and their role-playing ways.
Now, to be honest, we all knew Anthem wasn't going to be the game we wanted it to be, and regardless if you enjoy it or not, it actually sold buckets in February and the team are continually supporting the game from this point on, so who knows what the future will be like for Anthem say, 1 - 2 years from now?
In any case, the game is well on its way to improving itself with it's 10 year plan and content road-map. Believe it or not, but Anthem will not be the death of BioWare just yet.
Rebuttal regarding Anthem killing BioWare over, let me give you the hardcore truths about Dragon Age 4 to put your mind somewhat at ease, to give you some reasons why you needn't fear for the future of Dragon Age.
With all the soar content and news regarding Anthem, Andromeda and BioWare's future, let me know give you some hope and faith for the future of Dragon Age 4 and why it's going to be okay!
First up, lets start with the team creating Dragon Age 4.
Dragon Age 4 is under production by the very same team who created Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare's Edmonton studio utilizing the Frostbite engine. This may sound alarming since Anthem and Andromeda both used Frostbite, however, so did Inquisition, this was in fact the first team to create an RPG using the engine and actually they did pretty freaking good considering!
It's not set in stone that Dragon Age 4 will be on the Frostbite engine, but I imagine it will most likely, EA force their developers to use it these days, and if you think about it, the developers will have an easier time with the engine now, they can also port and copy a lot of things over from Inquisition's state, using a lot of that game's resources and technology.
Regarding the developers themselves, well Patrick Weekes is the new lead writer since David Gaider left, he created the character Solas, and has been at BioWare since the Mass Effect trilogy. Other than Gaider himself, there's no one better than Weekes for the job of writing the next narrative, especially when it revolves around his very creation - Mr big bad dread wolf.
John Epler is the narrative director, his work includes the entire Trespasser DLC's story, which was some damn fine execution and direction if I say so myself.
There's been a concerning rumor about John and his personal political stance effecting the plot of Dragon Age 4, to put this topic short, he's a narrative director not writer, and politics has always been in Dragon Age, so it's not a new plot focus.
Alexis Kennedy has been freelance writing for the next game too, his work will influence a lot of the dark, shady parts of Dragon Age, as his work is often inspired by his own experiences with death. It was speculated that Alexis was writing something to do with cults, which sounds direct to Dragon Age's dark fantasy roots.
in terms of the soundtrack, we're still not quite sure who worked on the piece that occurred in the Dread Wolf Rises trailer, however, I expect the return of Inquisition's Trevor Morris or potentially Origin's Inon Zur.
And again, a lot of Inquisition's developers are returning for this one! Nick Thornborrow, Mark Darrah, and many others will be returning to Dragon Age since Anthem's release.
Mike Laidlaw, David Gaider, Ben Gilinas, Aaron Flynn, etc don't work at BioWare anymore, so please stop tweeting at them for news. Tweet at Patrick Weekes and John Epler instead.
Multiplayer is in the works, nothing has been said regarding what we can expect and how majority it will affect the main game. All we know is that BioWare were hiring an engineer in January to create this mode. I know all of us are hoping this multiplayer will have no attachment to the single player and will be it's own contained thing. Perhaps a better horde mode like Inquisition.
Dragon Age 4 will have major live-service elements, hopefully this will regard the multiplayer mode, however, again we're not sure what this will look like, it could just be a story DLC roadmap after launch, like Assassin's Creed Odyssey's treatment of DLC. Here's hoping anyway because that would mean more quality narrative content after launch.
The ongoing title for Dragon Age 4 is The Dread Wolf Rises, however, the real title for the game may be something quite different. Probably a single word like the previous entries, I like the title Dragon Age: Imperium, but that's another I, so it could be too similar to Inquisition.
It's speculated via Trespasser's ending that the next game will focus on a northern Thedas setting, more than likely we'll be visiting the tumultuous Tevinter Imperium, a heavy magic-based society with the most controversial views on life in Thedas.
Solas is going to serve as the antagonist or at least contagonist, we'll most likely be rivaling the Elven God as he plans to tear the veil.
We'll be playing as a new protagonist as we have done the past three games, this is just a trend following the Dragon Age franchise, unlike Mass Effect where you play as Shepard throughout the games.
Regarding next generation of gaming, we can only assume that this will be a next gen title, so we can expect more detail, quality gameplay and cinematics, especially with the Frostbite engine.
Apparently Anthem is hinted to be influencing the future of both Mass Effect and Dragon Age from here on out, we can crack as many guesses at what that means, but I assume it's to do with the live service element and potential DLC roadmaps, hopefully it's not the multiplayer tie in.
We expected to hear something next EA Play, on June 9th 2019, however, EA Play has since been canned and now EA are following the event up with direct live-streams instead. Perhaps Dragon Age 4 may have a trailer showcased on one of these live-streams, if not, there's always Microsoft's conference, and other events later down the line.
Dragon Age: Origins is going to be celebrating it's 10th anniversary this year, BioWare have always been hopeful for a remaster/remake for this game, if not that, perhaps they could at least reveal the title or a trailer for Dragon Age 4?
Dragon Age 4 is expected to release around 2021, it's currently under deep development as the team return from Anthem to proceed with Dragon Age.
Other than that, all I can say is, Dragon Age 4 is seemingly going to be okay, it's got dedicated, hardcore RPG developers behind it, with a powerful engine, all they need is the time to crack on with it. Judging by Anthem and Andromeda, this is something both those games needed, and it's going to be the same for Dragon Age 4, the potential is there, all they need is for EA to let them create their masterpiece.
So, EA, don't rush the BioWare studio and let them work in peace to their own deadlines, Maker knows that Dragon Age 4 already has enough pressure, but we all know BioWare can do it. We've just got to remain hopeful and inspired for what they can create for the future of Dragon Age!

The Tea Times - March (2020)
No way around it, March has been one big kick in the crotch for the most part. I hope everyone out there is keeping safe and staying indoors. Your health is not something you want to gamble with. Still, there have been a few juicy game releases to help stave off some of the madness. If nothing else, it’s some free time to catch up on the gaming backlog. I’ll be working from home though, so I’ll just have to resist the temptation of DOOM Eternal.
At a glance
DOOM Eternal, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, Exit the Gungeon, Half-Life: Alyx, Black Mesa released.
Amnesia: Rebirth, KnightOut, Sea of Stars revealed.
From Cyberpunk to Witcher
E3 Has Been Cancelled!
A Small Update on PS5 backwards compatibility
The Releases!
Phew, a lot to get through here so forgive the cherry picking. I’m also starting with my favourite cherry, DOOM Eternal, which was released on March 20th. I have played through the entirety of the singleplayer and can confirm it’s the same delicious blend of chaos that made 2016’s DOOM so good. It has a few issues here and there of course, but if you like your shooters old school and your guns large, check out DOOM Eternal.
Tumblr media
Also on March 20th, which spawned a flock of memes, was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I’ve had a fleeting romance with Animal Crossing back in the day and I enjoyed myself. It hits the same notes as Stardew Valley, in fact it was probably one of the first series to focus down on making its players relax. Given what I’ve heard about New Horizons, it’s a pretty solid entry into the series. Worth picking up if your stress levels are getting too high.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps sits second in my ‘to play’ list, right after DOOM Eternal. Ori and the Blind Forest was downright beautiful. Hamstrung a little by the rather simple gameplay, but managed to pluck my heartstrings like a harp. The sequel looks equally as breathtaking, so I’m interested in experiencing that once again. That and sinking my teeth into another metroidvania.
I’m afraid I don’t have too much more to say about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX that I didn’t say last time. It’s not a series I have much experience with. Still, Pokemon has a reputation for a good reason and I’m sure this follow up is going to be as good as the rest of the series. It was released on the sixth of March.
Exit the Gungeon, the platform style mash up of Enter the Gungeon, released on March 17th. It flips things on its head a bit, with us not trying to delve deeper into the Gungeon. Instead we’re climbing out of it while it crumbles around us. It does however keep the juicy elements. It’s still a roguelike and there’s a whole host of guns to collect. Worth picking up if your run in the Gungeon isn’t quite over yet.
Tumblr media
Half-Life: Alyx’s best contribution to the world of gaming is all of the videos of people screwing around. Drawing crude things on the windows, throwing bottles around and just generally having fun. There’s also the usual Half-Life depth and the scary headcrabs but we’ve upgraded our gravity gun tomfoolery. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to do VR at the moment but if you are, then know that Half-Life: Alyx came out on March 23rd.
Continuing the Half-Life theme is Black Mesa, which was officially released on March 5th. Not really too much I can say about this really. You don’t need me to say that Half-Life is a good game, ninety percent of the internet says that on the regular. Black Mesa puts the right kind of polish in, preserving the core experience while removing all of the outdated clunkiness. Xen is now finally in too, so it’s the time to pick it up.
The Announcements
Frictional Games’ ARG has now borne fruit: Amnesia: Rebirth. The trailer doesn’t give too much away (at least to my ignorant eyes) but there seems to be a blend of the modern world in with the past and the… weird. That’s pretty much Amnesia’s forte. While I am a little sad that this isn’t a brand new IP, given how well they crafted SOMA, it should be interesting no matter what. I imagine we can expect the usual run’n’hide gameplay, but hopefully with a thoughtful story to bring in some of those slower scares. It’s knocking on your door in Autumn of this year.
I’m always on the lookout for some nice looking couch co-op games and KnightOut caught my eye. It’s seemingly about building a castle, together with a friend, then doing your utmost to destroy your rival’s castle. Castle building looks to be right down to the individual blocks, so good builders may make a solid fort. Until the destroyers get their job on and tear it to shreds of course. It should be out on early access on March 27th.
Tumblr media
Sea of Stars caught my eye with just how pretty it looks. It has a definite old school inspiration running throughout. Graphics and gameplay remind me very heavily of Chrono Trigger, which I imagine will count as high praise for many. It’s a turn-based RPG which looks almost seamless from the trailer. Whether it will hold up while the retro gamers get a hold of it will remain to be seen but right now, it’s pretty charming. It’s on Kickstarter right now, so I don’t believe there’s a solid release date beyond 2022.
The CyberWitcher
With everyone focused in on Cyberpunk 2077, I imagine not many people have been thinking about what’s going to come after. Except CD PROJEKT RED of course, who are going to switch tracks back to the Witcher it seems. This comes from studio president Adam Kiciński who says that they now have two worlds they want to make games in, so they’ll switch between Witcher and Cyberpunk.
While I imagine this does hinge on Cyberpunk 2077 being a success, I don’t think we’ll have too much to worry about. It does mean that these worlds are going to be more and more fleshed out, which is interesting. Let’s just hope they don’t phone anything in.
Oh and CD PROJEKT RED have seemingly buried the hatchet with Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski. For now at least.
Tumblr media
E3 On Lockdown
It was fairly inevitable at this point, given that we’re dealing with a global pandemic, that E3 would be cancelled. After all, gaming conventions aren’t known for their stellar standards of hygiene. All jokes aside though, having a large gathering of people in the current climate would be downright stupid. Hats off to the E3 organisers for making the right call. Looks like E3 isn’t completely disappearing though, as there will be some online presence.
After all, a lot of announcements come out at E3 so it’ll be weird to lose that. Oh and if anyone did get tickets, they’re reaching out with the intent of providing full refunds.
A Quick Step Backwards
I’ve not covered much of the latest console war, as I’m not really planning on investing into it. I’m more about counting up my pennies until I can finally afford a new graphics card. Instead of anything worthwhile to a regular adult man, of course. Still, there is one thing that I do enjoy talking about with consoles: Backwards Compatibility. Or the general lack thereof.
PlayStation has generally been pretty good with that though and it seems they’re planning to continue that tradition, at least for the generation behind it. The PlayStation 5 (and I’m very glad they’re not just tacking a subtitle on) should be able to play the majority of the PlayStation 4 catalogue. There will be some outliers, of course, but that's the nature of the beast.
Not just that, but they’ll run at a ‘boosted frequency’. What that means is that these games will have more stable frame rates and, potentially, higher resolutions. So your sexy PlayStation 4 games may become even sexier. A pretty good commitment to backwards compatibility, so credit to Sony there.
Now just bring the Yakuza Remastered collection to PC and I’ll love you forever. That’s all for March, stay safe and see you in April!

Saving You
Hello. Can I request a fangs x reader where she like saves him from the farm or something? Maybe like she tries to stop him from joining during the play but can’t so she loses him they can already be dating if you want and she confides in Pea or something to help save fangs idk something like that if you want
A/N: I am so so so in love with the way this story came out and I hope that you love it too. thankyou to my beta @wayward-river chech her out and join her follower special where you can submit stories based on her prompts!
Warnings: Fangs being a dick, violence, cult discussion (Farm), cursing
Word Count: 4971
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You and Fangs had been dating for years, you loved him - more than loved him. You had been through everything together. The ups and downs of the Serpents, the Northside vs Southside feud, and everything else that had hit your relationship in the past. You had been going stronger than ever for the last few months, nothing truly affecting you too bad except when Fangs started dealing. You understood why, and you understand the things he had to do, but you found him an out and he took it. That took a toll on your relationship. You were so scared for him then, but you saved him and got him back. After all the drugs and rejoining the Serpents, he wanted his mind off of the drugs and off of the Serpents so you both decided to join the play. Theatre was one of his favorite things, and if it made him happy you would follow.
You were both doing the play together alongside your friends Toni and Sweet Pea, so everything was looking up until Kevin told everyone that there would be a new co-director. You had met the co-director one other time when she walked into the class for the first time, you had ignored her name then. Evelyn Evernever apparently her father ran the “Farm” more so the cult that had made its way into Riverdale. You knew Betty Cooper was investigating them due to her mother joining but you didn’t know anything more than that. You didn’t trust Evelyn, but as a co-director, you had to at least follow her and her views. Evelyn got close, so close that she pulled someone away from you. You ignored her until you couldn’t anymore because it meant risking the loss of the one person you cared the absolute most for.
*Flashback*
For weeks now Fangs had been acting funny. He was one of the leads in the play so he was always busy, but on most nights he would come home even later than you would see Sweets and Toni coming home and they were leads as well. Fangs kept saying that he was either at the play or on Serpent business but you didn’t believe that to be true. He told you again he was going to be out, that he was on Serpent business, he told you he would be home but he still was out and you had begun to worry. Even though he had been lying or so you thought he always came home on time. You waited till an hour after he was supposed to be home before you called him.
“Fangs baby?”
“Hey Y/N what’s up?”
“Uh are you coming home, it’s late”
“I will be home when I get there what is your problem”
“Well uh you told me you would be home at 9 and it’s 12 now I just… I was worrying”
“Well, you need to stop I will be home later” You waited till he came home, hours later. It was now 4 am and he was just walking through the door.
“Where were you Fangs!”
“I was out! What does it matter?”
“Becuase I fucking worry Fangs, I fucking worry that you won’t come home in one piece when you are out on those jobs, don’t you get that”
“You need to calm the fuck down babe, there really isn’t anything to worry about. I am safe where I am, no one would hurt me Y/N”
“What do you mean no one, rival gangs you idiot”
“Oh yeah well”
“Oh my fucking god you weren’t on a job were you!”
“Why do you keep questioning me” He stepped up trying to appear bigger, almost trying to tower over you more than he already did, as if he was trying to make you fear him. You ran out of the trailer that night not turning back and you had slept in your car. You couldn’t sleep next to him, not with him being like that.
The next night you followed him to the “serpent job” that he was on. As you did you found him standing over a fire with Kevin and other people you had never met before,  but at the end of it stood Evelyn Evernever. By the time you had got there, Fangs had already been walking on the hot coals and you heard the tagline you had seen on the majority of Evelyn’s shirts. “May the one become many and the many one” You ran, tears streaming down your face, you ran to one of the places you felt safe, Sweet Pea’s trailer. Knocking on the door frantically you waited for him to answer but he hadn’t. You knew Toni was working so you couldn’t go to the bar because you didn’t want to see people, so you waited on Sweet Pea’s doorstep tears streaming down your face.
“Y/N!”
“Pea!” You stood up pulling him into a hug
“Pea they… they got him”
“Got who Y/N what’s going on?”
“Fangs! The Farm!”
“Wait… wait, slow down”
“He has been acting funny, angry just not the normal Fangs I questioned him on it the other night because he lied saying he was at a Serpent job. He stood up almost trying to tower over me and I ran out of the trailer and slept in my car, I was so scared Pea I have never seen him like that. Then tonight he told me he was going on a job again so I followed him Pea “
“Where did he go”
“It was odd small paths deep in fox forest. He walked across a lit coal pit and then Evelyn was there I think it was some sort of induction or something, I don’t know. Pea, I can’t lose him not like I almost did before. I can’t go through that again Pea I can’t” Pea slowly lowered the both of you onto the steps pulling you to him as you cried into his chest.
“We will get him back, I promise”
*Flashback over*
That night meant that he was a part of it, but you couldn’t say anything, you knew that if you did he would be defensive like he had been all those nights that he came home late. You told Pea that night and he was the only one that knew. You both said nothing, knowing that if you did he would be as defensive as he was before. You and Pea both let Fangs go on and on about how good the play was going and how he was becoming very close with Evelyn and the other people from the Farm. You both pretended to be supportive, pretended to understand the things that Edgar was doing.  It had been weeks since Fangs joined the farm. A month and two weeks to be exact. You dropped out of the play without Fangs noticing. Even opening night he didn’t notice you sitting in the crowd. You were taking care of everything including his own mother. Fangs wasn’t noticing or doing anything lately, he didn't care about anything. Anything including the fact that you were pregnant. The only person who truly knew was Sweet Pea.
*Flashback*
You sat sitting by the bathroom counter not answering the multiple phone calls and text messages you had. It was as if you were frozen in time. Fangs was not answering like always and he was the only person you needed in the situation you were in. You were scared beyond anything for multiple reasons but you needed him and he wasn't there. You sat there sobbing for what felt like hours the anxiety welling inside of your chest. You hear a knock and someone enter your home but you didn’t care you couldn’t in that moment. Only the people you trusted the most had a key so you knew you would be fine. You sat there sobbing your chest feeling tighter and tighter each moment. Then you heard the bangs on the bathroom door and the shouts of Sweet Pea through it.
“Y/N, Y/N are you okay?” but you couldn’t respond. You tried but all that came out was louder cries. “Y/N open the door please” you tried to move but your body felt numb. He kept banging and banging but you couldn’t do anything. “Y/N move away from the door, try to. I am breaking it down if you don’t open it” You heard the kick and then the snap of the door knocking off of its hinges. You looked up with clouded vision into Sweet Pea’s eyes as he fell to the floor grabbing you tightly.
“What’s going on? Did he hurt you!”
“N, no”
“Talk to me Y/N, please” You couldn’t you were lucky “you” came out of your mouth. So instead you handed him the stick that was clutched inside of your hand so tightly you felt the tingles when you had given it to him. Sweet Pea remained silent as he stared down at the stick that you had placed into his hand.
“Pea.. say something please”
“It’s gonna be okay”
“That is the worst possible thing you could have chosen Pea. You have no idea what is going to happen. Hell where the fuck is Fangs, he was supposed to be home and he is not, how am I going to do this?” Your cries were louder and your shaking harder as Sweet Pea held tighter rocking you back and forth.
“Hey, hey, hey. Y/N listen to me. We are going to figure out this shit with Fangs okay? Fuck I will do whatever it takes to get his ass out of the farm okay. But you listen to me and listen well okay. If he doesn’t stop with this bullshit. I will be here for you and this baby. He is my best friend and he may be a crazy psycho right now, so I will take care of you no matter what, I promise.”
“I, I can’t ask you to do that Sweet Pea, you have your own life to live. I, I can’t Sweet Pea”
“You stop it Y/N. You are not asking I am telling you. I will take care of you and this baby I want you to know that. I will be here for you through everything okay. You aren’t alone”
*Flashback Over*
You had tried to tell him multiple times but each time he had ignored you completely. The only person who really knows again was Sweet Pea. He was your rock through all of this. He even took you to your first appointment when Fangs was a no show. Now a month and a half into this pregnancy Sweet Pea was more of a figure to the child growing inside of you than Fangs was. You were going to try to tell Fangs again, hoping that maybe this time he would listen.
“Baby before you go can I talk to you”
“About what babe”
“Uhm… us”
“Baby I don’t have a long time to talk about “us” can we talk later I need to go”
“Wait!”
“What are you up to tonight”
“Well Edgar is going to take away my pain”
“I thought you said he has been doing that”
“Well yes he has but this is more in-depth he will cure me of all the pain I have by taking the places that are infected with the pain”
“Oh… uhm, will you be alright”
“Yes, of course, Edgar takes great care of us, baby. I will be home later alright”
“Okay” He left and you called Sweet Pea instantly.
*Phone Call*
“Sweet!”
“Y/N calm down what’s going on? Is the baby alright?”
“Yes, yes the baby is fine. It’s Fangs. He said that Edgar is going to cure all his pain tonight”
“No! We need to get to him Now! Get outside! I’m picking you up!”
“Pea! Pea will he be okay!”
“We are going to save him alright. I promise”
*Phone Call Ended*
Pea pulled up in his pickup truck right next to your trailer and you hopped in quickly. You needed an explanation. You needed to know what was going on.
“Pea! What the fuck is going on”
‘Well earlier Jones had me help him get Betty out of the farm, you know how she was doing recon”
“Yeah, yeah I know”
“Well the Farm is an organ farm Y/N apparently Betty found human organs, Betty also said when people heal they sometimes disappear without a trace”
“I’m… If Fangs is being “fully” healed I’m afraid that Edgar is gonna cut into him”
“Pea I’ve almost lost him so many times. I, I can’t do it again”
“I know, we are gonna save him okay. I know the path he always takes. I assume he is going to pick up Kevin like usual meaning that If we cut through the one road we can make it and block the entrance before he gets there. I called Jones, Topaz and a few others and they are going to meet us there”
“Okay”
“I need you to stay calm okay, for you and the baby, can you do that for me Y/N”
“Here’s the plan. We meet them and we stop him basically detain him and then we bring him back to the trailer. Hopefully, we can knock some sense into him”
“Alright, we can do this” Pea squeezed your hand as slowed the car to a stop next to Toni and Jugheads bike as well as a few of the other Serpent’s vehicles. You got out slowly making your way across to everyone thanking them for coming to help. Toni stopped you midway.
“Y/N are you alright?”
“Yeah why”
“You just look… different”
“Sweet Pea told you didn’t he”
“Yeah, sorry”
“Don’t be I knew he would tell someone I’m glad it was you. Wait why did he tell you though”
“When he bought you that stuff and picked your prenatals and stuff up I went with him. He tried hiding it didn’t work too well. For a while, he said he got someone pregnant but I didn’t believe that then I finally found out since he couldn’t keep his lie straight, but if you need anything. Or to stay anywhere you can always stay at Thistle House with me, Cheryl and Nana Rose”
“Thank you but after tonight I’m hoping everything will be back in place. That Fangs will be back in place”
“Hey, we are going to get him back” You left Toni finishing your circle around before making it back to Sweet Pea.
“Sweets”
“Is it soon”
“Yeah my time he should be here in like 2 mins, but when he does I need you to stay in the truck. I can’t have you getting in the center getting hurt. You are going to try and talk him out of it I know it and he is gonna fight back and may not see you. So to be safe please stay in the truck or at least near it”
“Alright”
“No Y/N I’m being serious, please fucking listen for once. Not just for you, but for the baby too”
“Fine, Why are always pulling the damn baby card now?”
“Because it’s the only way I can get you to listen”
‘Ugh you're impossible”
“Yep” Just as you said it you heard the rustle of tires against the rocky dirt road and you saw Fangs' truck in the distance. “He’s Coming”
“Stay in the truck, please”
“Okay” You watched as Fangs pulled up all the Serpents halting his truck and dragging him out. They tried to make him go peacefully but all you kept hearing was “They are going to take away my pain, you don’t understand, let go of me” You couldn't bear to hear it so you sat in the truck with your hands over your ears trying to block all of the noise that you possibly could. You didn’t even hear Sweet Pea get in the truck until you felt his hand rub your arm.
“Stop!”
“Hey, hey it’s just me”
“I’m sorry Pea”
Are you okay?”
“His, his screams I don’t know, I just yeah I'm fine”
“You sure”
“Did we get him”
“Yeah look behind you” You looked behind to see Jones with Fangs in handcuffs and tape over his mouth. “Jones is going to help us get him in the trailer and then he is going to leave is that okay?”
“Yeah, thanks Jughead”
You tried not to look in the rearview mirror on the ride to the trailer. Every time you ended up catching a glimpse you saw anger in Fangs' eyes something that you would rarely see unless something terrible was happening to him or the people he cared about. He couldn’t have known what Edgar was going to do to them. There was no way he would want to go to him and do it if he knew, at least that is what you had hoped. The drive to the trailer seemed so much shorter than usual your breath never really settling. Sweet Pea told you to wait in your bedroom as they brought Fangs inside and got him situated. You waited for a knock on the door from Sweet Pea for what felt like forever and finally, when it came you were more nervous than ever.
You walked out. Fangs was tied to a chair with the tape removed from his mouth.
“How could you do this to me Y/N”
“I am trying to save you don’t you get that Fangs”
“I thought you cared, I thought you understood”
“I do care about you, but the farm… what they are doing isn’t right hell it’s illegal”
“No they helped me Y/N, fucking untie these ropes please” You looked to Pea as he nodded at you. He knew that he could keep Fangs down. Fangs was strong but Pea had gain on him in both weight and height, Fangs stood no chance. Sweets untied him slowly but kept his hands cuffed.
“Your hands stay cuffed Fogarty”
“Fine but can I talk to my girlfriend alone please?”
“No”
“No?!”
“I will stand in the corner and you can talk to her, but I will be here, and I will but if I have to understand”
“Yes, okay fine” Pea stood by the doorway to the hallway, at a stance daring Fangs to do anything as minuscule as move a single step forward. You saw in Pea’s eyes, the worry he had finally coming to the surface.
“Fangs…”
“Baby please”
“Do you even know what they are doing Fangs”
“Yes Edgar was going to do a treatment to help ease my pain, he has been helping me so much showing my mom getting better and so much more baby, this was going to be one of my final treatments”
“Fangs baby that treatment is bullshit”
“No, it’s not Y/N don’t say that! Edgar is healing me”
“Baby you need the truth. Your mom is not getting better. She is on bedrest, I have been taking care of her me and Sweet Pea. I started working extra shifts to buy her a new medication. You haven’t been around Fangs, you wouldn’t even begin to know what has been going on”
“But Edgar told me she was fine!”
“She’s not fine Fangs”
“But he showed me, I talked to her, I…”
“Fangs I have no idea what Edgar told or showed you but your mom is not better”
“Your lying”
“I’m not, the only person lying is Edgar, He told you he would heal your pain, but he hasn’t done shit. I don’t know what these treatments are but this final “cure” could have killed you, probably would have killed you Fangs. Edgar Evernever is nothing but a cheating con artist. He is taking people like you, people with sorrow and pain and using them or their…” Before you could even finish you were being pushed down to the floor. You had luckily landed on your butt. You looked up into Fangs' eyes the pure anger rushing to his face as Sweet Pea pulled him back and onto the chair tying his hands and legs to it once more.
“Let me go!”
You couldn’t speak, he wasn’t the Fangs that you knew. The Fangs you knew would never push you to the ground. The Fangs you knew would kill anyone who made you cry. The Fangs you knew wasn’t the Fangs in front of you. Pea helped you up and before you could even speak he began screaming into Fang’s face.
“You fucking dipshit you could have hurt her or… You know you are a fucking idiot, all she does is care about you. All she does is want to protect you to get you back the way you used to be, but then you go and do that shit. You push her to the ground like trash. You could have seriously hurt her Fogarty. What the fuck is wrong with you!”
“Yeah well, I don’t need her to pay attention to me! I was perfectly fine with what I was doing before she watched me and found out where I was going!” You were tired of the bad mouthing from him. You were tired of him being angry because of you caring.
You stepped up getting very close into his face knowing he couldn't touch you because he was tied up. “I stepped in Fangs, Yeah I fucking did and you know why? No? I stepped in and hovered because I almost lost you once. Actually no I almost lost you more than once so yeah I stepped in and I cared but you know what that isn’t even the main reason Fangs. I stepped in because I almost lost you all those times but this time I couldn’t lose you because it wouldn’t be just me Fangs. It isn’t just me who would lose you anymore” You looked down to your stomach your hand going up in protection as Fangs looked to you almost as if he had gotten slapped in the face.
“Your…” You remembered you had put the stick in your pocket before leaving the house so you grabbed it out setting it in his lap.
“Yes Fangs, I’m pregnant with your fucking child. The farm almost took you from me forever, You know what Edgar was going to do. He was going to harvest your fucking organs Fangs. Your Organs!. If we would have let you go in their tonight you may have never came out. I can’t lose you!”
“Baby don’t cry I’m right here”
“Are you Fangs, I am staying with Sweet Pea tonight I’ll tell Jughead to come over and check on you”
“Baby ple…”
“Stop Fangs, or I won’t come back at all”
You left the trailer without another word or glance at Fangs. You saw Sweet Pea come out of the trailer and make a phone call before hopping into the truck with you.
“I'm proud of you”
“Thank you pea”
“No seriously Y/N you stood your ground, now I guess we just have to wait and see what he does. But I have a question… will you forgive him easily? What if he goes back?”
“I’m hoping this child will keep him here with me… with us. I hope it at least shocked him into reality or maybe the talk of his organs did”
“yeah”
You stayed with Sweet Pea. He let you sleep in his bed that night, and he slept on the couch. You constantly told him that it was fine, and he knew the both of you were only friends but he still wanted you to have your space to yourself. The only time he ever ended up in the bed with you was when you had a terrible night terror about Fangs dying in the farm. Now you realized maybe that terror wasn’t so wrong, and you fell asleep almost peacefully knowing at least he was somewhat safe with Jughead in the trailer you shared.
You woke up the next morning to eyes looking into yours. Eyes that you recognized instantly. You jumped back fear going through you as you sat down onto the floor.
“Baby stop” he reached to you and you flinched slightly “are, are you afraid of me?” you stood tall standing your ground. You didn’t want to appear weak in front of him.
“Yeah well, the last time we talked without you tied up I was pushed to the ground, by the way, thanks for that. Luckily I landed the right way or I wouldn’t be saying thank you right now and neither would our child”  You saw the tear well into his eye as he turned around walking directly out of the room. You threw on one of the sweatshirts you left at Sweet Pea’s before walking out into the living room. Fangs sat on the couch with a basket next to him. A basket filled with baby things of every shape size and color. His head hung into his hands soft hums being heard from him. You knew he was crying. You didn’t want to feel bad, but you couldn’t deny the pain you felt for him. When you are with someone for so long you feel what they feel and this was no different. You went over sitting on the couch and pulling him into a hug.
“Baby I’m sorry about the farm. I couldn’t. I didn’t know what was going on. I barely remember how I even became a part of it. It was like I was in a trance of some sort. Like I was in control but I also wasn't. I’m sorry for what I did to you. For the pain I caused. I can’t forgive myself for that.”
“Hey, hey calm down… wait where is Pea? He wouldn't leave me.”
“He is outside, told me I had 10 mins before he was coming in”
“I know I left for a while baby I am so sorry, but we are having a baby why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I tried you didn’t care Fangs, you pushed me off every time going to the farm “to heal” by the way I'm glad your organs are intact”
“Baby I didn’t know… and my mom I saw her today, she… she isn’t doing good. The farm told me she was. Babe I saw her. The farm showed me her. It must've been a hallucination. I… what if she died while I was with the farm”
“Hey… calm down you're here now, you need to breathe Fangs. You didn’t mean for any of this to happen”
“What if I lost you…”
“You will never lose me”
“You shouldn’t forgive me Y/N… what if I would have hurt you”
“You may have been mad Fangs but last night you could have slapped me, punched me, all you did was push me. You would never intentionally hurt me Fangs. I know you too well. Even in that state, you wouldn’t hurt me bad. I love you Fangs. I will always love you. We will always love you” You grabbed his hand placing it gently onto your stomach.
“How long… how long have you known?”
“I’ve known for a little while… Pea took me to my first appointment. He bought me the stuff I needed. He has been really helpful Fangs”
“I’m sorry I wasn't here” you watched his face drop again but you pulled his lips to meet yours. Locking your lips together for the first time in which felt like an eternity.
“You're here now. I’m fine, You're fine. We are going to be okay, I promise. Me, you, this baby. Together. Forever Fangs”
“Forever baby. I promise you I will never leave again. I promise I will try my absolute hardest to stay away from anyone associated with the farm, but baby if they are doing this. If they did what they did to me or well almost what they did and all the other shit. The lies, the hallucinations everything... what about Kevin? What about Betty’s mom, and everyone else in there? I need to help Jughead and Betty”
“I get that Fangs but you need to be all in if you're not then I will take care of this baby myself without you. You can help them but right now… I need you, here with me. I’ve been alone… I mean I’ve had Pea helping but, I can’t handle you leaving again. Not for a long time Fogarty”
“I don’t dream of it. I will be with you and this baby until the end. I promise” He pulled you to him his arms wrapping around your middle as your head rested in his neck. His lips connecting to your forehead. “I will never break that promise Y/N. I will be here always”
“I know Fogarty, I know. I love you”
‘I love you too baby, and I love you baby, whatever you are”  Even in a time like this, a time where you were learning to forgive everything that happened, he could make you so soft for him. You loved him for that, and you loved him despite everything that had happened.

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Review
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: VIDEO GAME BASED MOVIE IS FORMULAIC BUT OFFERS PLENTY OF FAST-PACED FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AS WELL AS LONGTIME FANS!
By Nico Beland
Movie Review: *** out of 4
Tumblr media
The world’s fastest hedgehog hits the big screen in Sonic the Hedgehog
PARAMOUNT PICTURES AND SEGA
The blue blur (or Blue Devil as the movie calls him) makes his big screen debut in Sonic the Hedgehog, based on the beloved Sega video game franchise of the same name. Believe it or not out of all the video game franchises, my favorite is and always will be Sonic the Hedgehog and have been a proud supporter of the hedgehog since childhood.
Granted, it wasn’t until after Sega became a third-party developer for consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo when I became a fan of the blue hedgehog, but ever since I got my hands on the Nintendo GameCube port of Sonic Adventure 2 as a kid, my Sonic fandom was pretty much instant. I’ve played many of the video games both old and new, watched all the cartoons, read the comic books published by Archie Comics at the time, and I owned several action figures, plushies, and other Sonic merchandise throughout my childhood…in fact I still have most of those even to this day.
I’ve been clamoring for a Sonic the Hedgehog theatrical movie for years despite video game film adaptations usually being critical and/or box-office poison. But given the popularity of Sonic especially during the 90s when he was rivaling Nintendo’s Mario franchise who already had a theatrical film released in 1993, I’d assume one would have been made back then or at the very least in the early-late 2000s when Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Sonic Heroes as well as the hit Saturday morning anime series, Sonic X were released, I was so eager for a Sonic movie that a couple of friends and I got together and made movies of our own when we were kids (They sucked BTW!).
After years of waiting and Sonic making a few big screen appearances prior in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph movies and Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, the beloved hedgehog finally gets a movie of his own which leads us to today. The film is directed by newcomer Jeff Fowler in his directorial debut, produced by Neal H. Moritz (Fast & Furious franchise, XXX, 21/22 Jump Street), and executive produced by Tim Miller (Deadpool, Terminator: Dark Fate) and is a live-action/animated hybrid (Yep, just like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Smurfs), which had me very worried when it was announced back in 2014 and was even more worried and disgusted when the first trailer came out last year which had an absolutely atrocious design for Sonic, fortunately they fixed it.
So, how does Sonic’s first movie hold up? Honestly, while I can’t call it the Sonic movie I wanted as a child, I had a fun time with it. It isn’t a perfect representation of its source material and the plot is pretty generic, but the charm of the film’s leads, humor, and subtle references to the games that inspired it are enough for me to overlook that flaw.
The film follows Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz-Parks and Recreation, The Other Guys, The Walk), blue anthropomorphic talking hedgehog from another dimension with extraordinary speed who travels to Earth to escape from those who want to capture him and harness his power. However, when he accidentally causes a power outage while hiding out in the town of Green Hills (Get it?), Sonic is targeted by the government and the tyrannical mad scientist, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey-Ace Ventura 1 and 2, The Mask, The Truman Show) who plots to use Sonic’s power for world domination.
This forces Sonic to team up with Green Hills sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden-X-Men franchise, Enchanted, Westworld) who agrees to help Sonic on his adventure to find his missing bag of magical rings that have the power to get him home. Of course, while getting into all sorts of trouble along the way.             The film also stars Tika Sumpter (Ride Along 1 and 2, Get On Up, Southside with You) as Tom’s wife Maddie, Adam Pally (Happy Endings, The Mindy Project, Iron Man 3) as Wade Whipple, and Neal McDonough (Star Trek: First Contact, Band of Brothers, Justified) as Major Bennington.
Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog probably isn’t the movie longtime fans wanted, but it still manages to be an entertaining and fun adaptation in its own right. It’s easily one of the best films based on a video game alongside Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and The Angry Birds Movie 2 and shows that we’ve come a long way since the dark days of Uwe Boll’s directing career.
As mentioned before, the plot is nothing special and rehashed from other kids’ movies however what sets this apart from things like The Smurfs or Masters of the Universe is that Sonic and Tom do have a strong chemistry together. It’s amusing to see them interact with each other on their road trip, cracking jokes, getting into trouble, and over the course of the film they learn more about one another thus making you care more for them over ANY Smurf or Chipmunk.
While there are a few jokes that don’t quite stick the landing, the humor for the most part not only made me laugh but there were moments in this movie where I laughed hard. Whether the film was poking fun at the entire Sonicfranchise, a particular running sequence that’s obviously a reference to the Quicksilver scenes from the X-Men movies, or Sonic breaking the fourth wall similar to Deadpool, I was laughing while also admiring how clever some of these jokes are, and let’s not forget Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, but we’ll get to him momentarily.
The redesigned Sonic is a lot better than what we could have gotten, he doesn’t have those ugly small eyes, questionable muscular arms and legs, or the terrifying human teeth anymore. Now, his appearance is more faithful to the source material recreating the hedgehog’s cartoony nature but is different enough to stand out from the rest of the character’s previous designs and be its own unique creation, this is a really good design for Sonic and had the filmmakers went with their original version, this movie would have crashed and burned even harder than Sonic ’06.
Besides Sonic being more appealing to look at now, he’s also just as entertaining to listen to, Ben Schwartz while he’s far from being a replacement for Roger Craig Smith, Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffith, or even Jaleel White, does a solid job providing Sonic’s voice and captures the cocky, arrogant, but good-natured attitude Sonic is known for having. He actually almost sounds like Ryan Drummond’s Sonic voice without sounding like a cheap impersonation.             Moving on to Sonic’s new friend that doesn’t have two tails, James Marsden as Tom, his performance is decent even though he doesn’t quite make as big an impression as Ben Schwartz’ Sonic and especially Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik. With that said, he gets some funny lines once in a while and as mentioned before has good chemistry with Sonic, so yeah, believe it or not James Marsden was partnered up with another CG animated character and this time came out with his dignity unlike his performance in Hop.
Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik owns every scene that he’s in, he’s no Mike Pollock and is a radically different Robotnik than from the games, but Carrey’s energetic and wildly animated personality shines through and gives a million percent whenever the crazy evil genius is on-screen. He’s certainly a lot better than Dennis Hopper as Koopa from the Super Mario Bros. movie.
Hopefully, this movie will be a hit during its theatrical run because I’d love to see a sequel especially if it introduced other Sonic characters like Tails, Knuckles, or even Shadow. Don’t make this like the recent Power Rangers movie, I need my big screen version of those characters!
Whether a fan, newcomer, or just looking for something fun to take the kids to, Sonic the Hedgehog should make everyone happy. It’s not perfect but it has enough action, wit, and charm to make it worth checking out. You’ll be “Up, Over, and Gone” before you know it.

I Figured It Out (A Gummi Phone Rant)
Tumblr media
So I loved Kingdom Hearts 3. It answered a lot of questions I had, reunited the sea salt and the Wayfinder trios, and validated why I spent so much time on my phone playing a mobile game people kept telling me to quit because it would never be part of the whole story. However, something about the story left me unsatisfied. I’ll probably do a post about my feelings on the game as a whole, but there is one specific thing I want to discuss (three guesses based on the title.)
Yes I am talking about the Gummi Phone. Spoiler/not really spoiler Chip and Dale send Sora the Gummi Phone so he can keep in contact with them and Ienzo because plot purposes. Also installed on the phone is Jimimy’s journal, a secret emblem count, treasure count, play games, take selfies and a few other things. But plot-wise this phone is used to contact Mickey/Riku, Chip/Dale and Ienzo throughout cutscenes.
Now being a girl who picks up her phone in the morning before she picks up her glasses I can happily tell you that one of the best features of the phone is the ability to communicate to others knowing that the message would get to the recipient when they had time to read it. Thus time constraints are a second thought when you can text something you just thought of or even life events you cannot wait to share with others. It is why instagram, snapchat, youtube, facebook and tumblr are so prevalent in modern day life.
Speaking of which during the game all of the transitions from place to place have a psuedo-instagram posts. They feature the worlds Sora goes to, Ienzo and Riku being deep, and Mickey trying to humanize his uber-strict teacher. I mention this because when they first showed up I got so excited, but then they just cycled through the same fifteen posts and I was disappointed. I bring up these posts because I feel thy could have helped with communication in another way.
One of my biggest gripes with this still fantastic game is the lack of communication between the main #1 trio of the entire series: The Destiny Trio. When the trailers came out I was so excited to see Sora, Riku, and Kairi rekindle their friendship after being stuck doing things high school students should not have to. Instead they isolate all three from each other and then try to crunch their communication to 2 at a time per character for about an hour and a half of cutscene time. And this is for a game that has about 12 hours worth of cutscenes. Now I believe they could have done an easier way to make sure these cinnamon rolls could have been in constant communication throughout the whole game and it all starts with this gosh darned gummi phone.
Now lets say that there was another button to select on the gummi phone menu. Lets call it... Snapstagram. After some important cutscenes or after completing worlds, you can log into Snapstagram and BAM! Look who is posting. It’s Kairi sending a selfie with Lea about her training and Riku being #plaidbrothers with King MIckey. Finished with Corona? Well guess what? Kairi successfully beat up Lea in a sparring match. Meanwhile Riku revisted radiant garden and reunited with Leon and Cloud for a selfie. But most importantly you have the option of commenting one thing for each post by your two besties. Not only is this a way to keep these three paopu-fruitnuts in constant contact but also lets the players follow Riku and Kairi on their progress with their missions.
Now I know what you are thinking: But wouldn’t that be a lot of programming for the Kingdom hearts team? First off, they had 13 years to work out the details of this game. Secondly THEY HAD 13 YEARS TO WORK OUT THE DETAILS OF THIS GAME. But most importantly they have done something similar to this concept in an earlier game. FFXV.
Tumblr media
Check it. Spoiler/You’ve had plenty of time to play this game not spoiler: Noctis and Luna are arranged to marry but since they live in rival areas their only means of communication has been this journal sent back and forth by Luna’s magical dog Umbra. Every time Luna sent Noctis a letter about how she is excited to be reunited with him, Noctis has the option to give one reply to her. Now in FFXV, so far we have only seen Luna and Noctis communicate when they were children in flashbacks, the heartbreaking death scene, and the fully completed are they in heaven post credits scene. If the player has not watched Kingsglaive of FFXV Brotherhood, they do not see Luna for more than 30 minutes of the entire game. But this constant communication between the two lovers give those players enough information to get “Yeah they are a long distance relationship and I should care about the girl my character feels this strongly about.
A common trend I see in the Kingdom hearts thread is the lack of communication with Kairi in particular with Sora and then Nomura kind of hoping the players assume they don’t need communication, but that is my problem. The main theme of the whole kingdom hearts games since number one is that Sora’s friends are his power. I realize that quite a few people believe this means his friendship with Donald and Goofy (And don’t get me wrong if anything happened to either of my disney brothers I would kill all 13 darknesses, 7 lights and then myself in an instant) but the journey started because Sora was separated from both Riku and Kairi.
Now people believe that Riku has so much communication with Sora but I need to remind you that Riku popped up in brief moments of Sora’s life in KH1 while Kairi was a litteral resident in Sora’s heart most of the game. COM Riku’s route only happened after Sora went beddy-bye. No Kairi communication but no real Riku connection either. KH2 Riku and Kairi slipped between Sora’s fingers most of the game until Endgame. So equal communication. DDD No Kairi but Riku also didn’t truly communicate with Sora except for before and after the Mark of Mastery exam. But he was Sora’s dream eater so it makes up for the time Kairi was literally in sora’s heart.  So Lack of Communication is pretty equal between all three hot messes.
Now if they were able to have something to keep in touch to make sure the other two were safe that would satisfy the small part of me that turned sour when the other two trios were reunited and the main group got the shaft. The Wayfinder Trio during BBS had constant scenes between them and constantly verbally worried about each other the whole game. The sea salt trio had mostly scenes between duos but they were spread evenly during their game so each character had their own grievances about their breakup. Sora, Kairi, and Riku got the opposite. Equal amount of time in the past games, but this game when it was supposed to be the ultimate reunion story they had nothing until endgame.
With Snapstagram, not only does it give us background on mission progression for the non-player friends, it tells the players who did not play 1 or 2 enough information to go “These are my best friends I would die for them”. When I came to this conclusion a few hours ago I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. I love KH3 and I kept wondering why I was so unsatisfied. If they game had utilized the gummi phone to be more like a regular phone, I think it would have been an easy was to solve some of the story issues that players had with the game.

I'm struggling not to get demotivated after seeing those leaks. I'm worried that, if we were wrong about a small thing like costumes, maybe that's a sign of being wrong about bigger things like the ship dynamic or Kylo/Reylo's ending.
Dude, it’s just costumes. What even were the predictions about costumes before? Like, did you read any meta anywhere that said “They will definitely be wearing X because that’s the only thing they could possibly wear if they’re following this one specific story trajectory that is the only possible way for a happy Reylo ending?” Did you read a meta somewhere that said “If they dress like this, Ben will absolutely die unredeemed?”
Like, there were a lot of pre-TLJ predictions that turned out to be wrong. Even when we got legit leaks a lot of the time they came colored with some off-base assumptions and speculation pulled straight out the ass riffing off costumes, art, or vague scene descriptions. In particular, I remember a lot of claims that Kylo was going to be angry at Rey and looking for a rematch after following her to Ahch-To and Reylos trying to reassure each other that it was to be expected that Rey and Kylo would be at each other’s throats for awhile until something like cliffgate happened to change their perceptions and give them a moment to talk. Then what did we get in the final product? Kylo never sets foot on Ahch-To, the KoR aren’t even in the movie, Kylo has no hostility toward Rey what-so-ever, and Rey was ready to bare her soul to him after 4 brief conversations.
As more and more promotional material came out speculation got more accurate and people were able to piece together that Kylo was going to save Rey from Snoke and that the scene would happen before the battle of Crait, based on a bump on Rey’s head. But when people who got to see the movie early started spoiling the Renperor ending, a lot of people called bullshit because they were so sure VIII was going to be Rey and Kylo as enemies until the end and IX was where the barely-started romance would blossom until they teamed up to kill Snoke together for the grand finale.
A lot of post-TFA Reylos had different ideas about where the story was headed. Some didn’t think Reylo would happen at all, some thought it would be extremely understated, and some were certain it’s what the entire sequel trilogy would be based around. Some expected Dark Fuck Prince Kylo in TLJ while others were unsurprised by Soft Boy Virgin Hand-Touch Ben. Some thought Kylo would fall for Rey just because she’s a (physically) Strong Independent Woman who won’t give him the time of day until he improves himself, while others rightly saw that their mutual compassion for one another was what would bring them together.
The big hangup I think we’re all concerned about is whether Redemption Equals Death for Ben or if Redemption Earns Life. Not every Reylo agrees about what Ben deserves or what Disney will allow. Some people think Disney wouldn’t have the balls to give the villain a happy ending with their Role Model For Little Girls while others think it’d be a much worse message to send to audiences if the ending implied that it really is too late to go back after a certain point and your only choices are to keep being evil, suffer forever as penance, or give up your life as penance because you’ll never be able to make up for what you’ve done or earn the right to be happy and loved.
There’s also debate over whether Ben should come back to the Light or if he and Rey should try and meet in the middle. There’s speculation about whether he’ll be ousted as Supreme Leader or if he’ll defect to the Resistance, or just sign a peace treaty. Everyone’s got their own ideas and most of them contradict one another because there’s a million different ways the story could play out while still arriving at a Reylo ending.
Every time we get a new piece of information it’s going to contradict some people’s expectations and right now, we’ve got so little to work with regarding IX the sky’s really the limit anyway. We’re so thirsty for anything we’ve got people speculating on what tone the marketing is going to take and whether it’s going to be honest or deceptive. Maybe they’ll try and promote a big Good vs Evil showdown between two bitter rivals who totally hate each other now after getting burned and the movie will turn out to be exactly that. Or maybe it’ll start out looking that way but gradually reveal itself to be a facade hiding the conflicted feelings still churning inside Rey and Kylo. Maybe they’ll play up the star-crossed lovers angle. Like, just straight up in the trailers putting in lines about how Rey and Kylo still care about each other and how she’s making it her mission to save his ass or die trying and putting out posters of themstaring longingly an inch away from each other’s lips.
We’ve already got people readjusting their expectations after the costume leak. Yeah, a lot of us didn’t think we’d be seeing Kylo put the mask on again (mostly because it doesn’t seem like it should even be possible) or Rey with the three-bun hairstyle because it would be a regression. Now we’re writing metas about how regression actually fits into the journey.

So, rumours and speculation and supposed “Inside sources” are suggesting that Legendary Pictures, anticipating that Detective Pikachu will be a success based on positive test screenings, are planning additional live-action Pokémon movies to basically set up a “Pokémon Cinematic Universe” of sorts, one being a spin-off movie about Mewtwo, and another movie based on the original games, Pokémon Red and Blue.
I’m taking this with a grain of salt, I don’t know how reliable this website is and behind the scenes decisions like this can easily change.
I will say though, I can fully believe the companies behind Detective Pikachu want to make a film series out of this. Pokémon is the most commercially successful media franchise in the world, even more so than Star Wars, and the trailer for Detective Pikachu was an internet sensation when it first dropped and right now sits at nearly 55 million views on YouTube. If it’s as good as we all want it to be, I fully believe we’ll get SOMETHING in terms of additional Pokémon movies.
If these rumours are true, I guess I understand the approach. Mewtwo could possibly feature in Detective Pikachu, given it was central to the story of the games, so general audiences would have reason to want to go see a spin-off movie involving it if Mewtwo’s role were well received in the film.
And Mewtwo is probably the most iconic legendary Pokémon in the series, and one of the most well liked and recognized Pokémon in general. If you’re going to do a cinematic universe approach and focus a movie around a specific Pokémon, Mewtwo seems an obvious choice.
As a longtime fan I do have to scratch my head and wonder whether I really want that, of course. I mean, I love Mewtwo, it’s my favourite Pokémon, but we already have a movie about him, a tv movie sequel, a second movie featuring a separate (And worse written) Mewtwo that everyone hated, and this year we have a CGI reboot of Mewtwo Strikes back on the way.
Considering that and Mewtwo’s prominent roles throughout various parts of the franchise, I do have to worry about whether this might make a lot of hardcore fans throw up their arms in frustration at overexposure. Especially fans of later generations that are already sick of Gen 1 pandering all over the place.
I mean... I’D be interested in seeing a live-action Mewtwo film and where they could go with that, but this definitely wouldn’t have been one of my first choices for a live-action Pokémon film series if I was calling the shots. But oh well, we’ll see if this actually comes to fruition, and then I’ll just hope for the best.
Speaking of Gen 1 nostalgia pandering!
A movie based off of Red and Blue. Hmm. Well, I suppose this seems like the “Well, duh” idea if the goal is to make an ongoing Pokémon film series. I think most fans always expected the first live-action Pokémon movie, if one was ever made, to be at least loosely based on the original games, rather than a recent and obscure spin-off game that only got a Western release last year.
I’m very mixed on this. On the one hand, the sources reporting on this say that Legendary is working on expanding on the source material to make it work, but I kind of wonder how the gen 1 games COULD work as a movie.
I mean, Red and Blue don’t exactly have a strong story, or at least not one that would translate well to film. The whole story is: Kid gets a Pokémon from a professor, goes around catching more Pokémon and beating 8 Gym leaders to earn badges, ends up running into the Pokémon Yakuza all over the place and singlehandedly defeats their entire organization including their boss on 3 separate occasions because they keep getting in their way, and all the while dealing with an annoying smug jerk of a rival who he has to beat in a battle after travelling to a far off location to battle the four most powerful trainers in the country in order.
This isn’t exactly an easy story to make into a two hour (?) film. Heck, when Pokémon origins tried adapting the games plot in 4 episodes, it basically amounted to a series of vignettes and montages that made the whole thing feel like a highlights reel. This would need some SERIOUS re-working to make a good cinematic story out of, which I think is one of the big reasons why Detective Pikachu is what they looked to for their first movie instead. Goofy as it sounds, that’s a much easier and more focused story to build a movie out of.
I’m sure it’s possible to make a good movie here, but I feel if they try to follow the gym and league based plot of the games, it’s just going to result in skipping and montaging through a lot of stuff, especially where the gyms themselves are concerned, which probably wouldn’t sit well with fans of certain gym leaders.
I dunno, maybe they'll base it more on the Pokémon Adventures manga and keep the plot more focused on Team Rocket?
I love the original games, but until I see a good pitch, I don’t know if I’m confident this would be the best idea for a movie. But we’ll wait and see if they actually announce anything.
Though again, I can imagine a lot of people that don’t like Gen 1 are going to be groaning if this rumour turns out to be true.
Like, if they are going to try and adapt the main games this is the right place to start so I can’t be mad, especially when they’d probably also be trying to draw in as much of the general audience who haven’t played or at least aren’t hardcore fans of Pokémon to make as much money as possible off this prospective franchise so you have to start small and with the most recognizable region, Pokémon and mythos, so I can’t be mad at such a decision. But with the reaction Let’s Go: Pikachu and Eevee got and the increasing frustration I’m seeing aimed at Gen 1 and Gamefreak appealing to older fans nostalgia, I can see a lot of fandom arguments sprouting up on this.
Look on the bright side then, if a live-action Pokémon series does spawn out of Detective Pikachu and Red and Blue are made into films, they’ll probably lead to movies based on the generations after it eventually. So, it wouldn’t be too bad, right?
I dunno, if these rumours about either potential movie turn out to be true, then I hope for the best. I’m not going to get myself hyped up for anything until well after Detective Pikachu is released and the film makers announce if they actually intend to make more Pokémon movies.
But whatever the outcome... can I just say it feels exciting to finally be living in a world where it’s actually feasible to be talking about the prospects of a live-action Pokémon cinematic universe based on various different games in the franchise? I mean... two years ago, the prospect of any live-action Pokémon movie seemed like a dream, and now this year we’re getting a Detective Pikachu movie that actually looks good, it’s probably going to be a hit, and there’s an actual, tangible chance of a live-action Pokémon film series and there are already behind the scenes talks and rumours about what future films might be about!
I just... my head is spinning, and I don’t really want it to stop. These last few years have seen the Pokémon franchise go through a big pop cultural resurgence, and if Detective Pikachu succeeds, we could be looking at a new era for Pokémon where the franchise reaches new heights in popularity and pop cultural juggernaut status actually exceeding the Poke-mania of the late 90′s/early 2000′s. Or at least on par with that.
Whether this speculation is on point or not, I know I’m rooting for Detective Pikachu to succeed. As a lifelong fan of Pokémon, I’m more excited for the future of the franchise this year and beyond than I’ve been in quite a while.
