as promised the separate comics/graphic novels roundup for 2023! this is a normal post until May when I realized I could (as a graphic novel librarian) become an Eisner voter and read 54 comics in a month (and then slightly less so in August when the Harveys came up.) below a cut because it's heinously long. I'll include my little write-ups and some panels right after my faves

JANUARY

Under the Red Hood by Judd Winick and Doug Mahnke I read this January second. Begin as you mean to go on! For all its flaws (Dick's Squidward face) the emotional arc of this story puts me right into the pit about Jason Todd.

Superman: Reign of the Supermen by Dan Jurgens and others

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest (ongoing) by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, and Travis Moore First off Dan Mora draws everyone like the most beautiful people in the world, which never hurts to look at. But also this is just a really fun comic! The action is fun the characters are very sweet and we get an honest to god Superbat gem fusion

Young Justice (1998) by Peter David and Todd Nauck MY CHILDREN! I was finishing up my Tim readthrough and was so delighted to meet Kon and Cassie and Bart and Cissie and Anita (I still don't care for Lobo.) Nauck's art is cartoony in a way that fits the comic really well.

Red Robin by Christopher Yost, Fabian Nicieza, Ramón Bachs, and Marcus To THEEEEE ARC for Tim. Everyone says read Red Robin. Yes read Red Robin but also understand this is him at his worst and most scrungly. This is not normal Tim. This is Tim's failgirl era.

Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day by Judd Winick and Ale Garza

MARCH

You and a Bike and a Road by Eleanor Davis Beautiful little memoir comic about biking across the US, and also about borders and travel and isolation/togetherness.

Superman for All Seasons by Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, and Bjarne Hansen I love this comic. Tim Sale draws Clark like the biggest, softest person you've ever seen, and Bjarne Hansen's colors are so gentle. (if you remember the rock metaphor from mission parameters, it's inspired by this scene from Book 1: Spring)

APRIL

Superman: Lost by Christopher Priest and Carlos Parlaguyan (ongoing) This series cuts right to the horror of being Superman and also the horror of being Lois Lane SO deftly. a few plot points I don't love but overall God it makes me miserable

Birds of Maine by Michael Deforge A delightful, dreamy collection of comics about birds living in a utopian society on the moon. The art is weird, the story is weird, everything about it is lovely.

MAY

Divinity v1-2 by Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine

The City of Belgium by Brecht Evans This is not a perfect graphic novel but the stuff it does with art and page and rhythm is so so phenomenal.

Lights, Planets, People! by Lizzy Stewart and Molly Naylor

Killadelphia v1-3 by Rodney Barnes, Jason Shawn Alexander, and Christopher Mitten

The Department of Truth v1-4 by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds This is a book about conspiracy theories and it is DEEPLY unsettling. Martin Simmonds' art makes me legitimately queasy to look at. Really really good but also it did send me into a little spiral for a bit.

Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely (Mat Lopes' colors also deserve a shoutout) This book made me cry! Also I have yet to read another Kara comic because this one was so good and I'm afraid the others won't be. She's sharp and angry in all the best ways and also deeply deeply caring and good. Capes meets space fantasy at its best. I would die for Ruthye

This is like Glass Onion meets the worst nightmare you've ever had, and the way it unfolds is masterful. Martínez Bueno's art is dreamy and unsettling, especially combined with Bellaire who colors like she's painting oil slicks.

Booster Gold (1986) by Dan Jurgens Booster my friend Booster. I really didn't expect this to be as FUN as it is! There are occasional storylines that drag but overall a delight.

The Human Target v1-2 by Tom King and Greg Smallwood

Heartstopper v2-4 by Alice Oseman

Killer Queens by David Booher and Claudia Balboni

I Hate This Place v1 by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin I really need to read v2 because this was so fun. Queer backwoods horror, sarcastic, delightful, and never heavy-handed. I read this right after Killer Queens, which read like someone fed a bunch of Drag Race episodes and 2012 tumblr posts into a comics generator, and Heartstopper, which was so blandly unobjectionable I actually forgot I'd read it, so I Hate This Place felt refreshing as hell. (actually while looking up screencaps I remember why I didn't read v2 which is that v1 has a LOT of gore and body horror and I gotta be careful with that stuff. however if you like a slasher go forth)

It’s Lonely at the Center of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood Gut punch on every page. Thorogood's art is weird and wild. It does feel a bit as though she's opened up her ribs for us to peruse.

Mazebook by Jeff Lemire A twisting fable about grief and the paths it takes you down. A lot of the Eisner noms had dead wives or daughters which I began to resent, but I gave this a pass because it was really, really beautiful.

Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton Everyone has told you it's good! oh it's good. Beaton's style, which I associate more with her humor work, at first feels somewhat at war with the subject matter, but it ended up really working for me.

Days of Sand by Aimee DeJongh

Talk to My Back by Yamada Murasaki This was one of my favorite books of the whole year. Beautiful meditation on the compromises of marriage and motherhood in beautiful, sparse drawings that lingered with me long after I'd finished reading.

JUNE

Do a Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson Do you like wrestling? I don't really care about it, but I do love weird wacky stories about grief and trying to fight your way through the afterlife to get your mom back. Both hilarious and poignant. The art is as bombastic as it needs to be.

The Night Eaters v1 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda Liu and Takeda are back! This time with some horror about a pair of siblings and their fucked up parents. Great stuff.

Ripple Effects by Jordan Hart and Bruno Chiroleu

Superman: Up in the Sky by Tom King and Andy Kubert Oh the Clark Kent of it all. the panel where Clark is calling home from alien customs because he has flown to the ends of the universe for one little girl is really what got me in this one

Superman Red and Blue (anthology) This is a whole lot of writers and a whole lot of artists and all of them are excellent. Once again the Clark Kent emotion is happening to me.

OCTOBER

Batman: Failsafe and Gotham War by literally everyone currently working in DC but especially Zdarsky

Birds of Prey (1999) by Chuck Dixon and then Gail Simone and a number of other people (this continued into November and December) This made the worms in my brain wriggle so bad that I wrote a whole yuri zine piece about Dinah and Babs, coming to a PDF (or physical copy!) near you soon!

DECEMBER

Dungeon Meshi v1-11 by Ryoko Kui Is it romantic to devour and be devoured in turn? Ryoko Kui sure thinks so. I was hungry the whole time I was making these my bedtime reading.

Through the Woods by Emily Carroll Emily Carroll is among the best to ever do it. This collection of stories is her at her unsettling best.

When I Arrived at the Castle by Emily Carroll

Batgirl (2000) v1-3 by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott thanks to Mssrs Puckett and Scott I am now fully unhinged about Cass Cain and her quest for immolation. the art in this is so stylized but so well-done, especially given how little text is in much of the series. when the paneling hits it HITS.

Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive by everyone working at DC in 2002 When a good crossover storyline works, it really really works. I love to see Bruce completely blow up his life because he doesn't see any point in existing outside the cowl anymore. Even more do I love to see the fallout from this on everyone who loves him! delight delight delight.

DO NOT GET THE SIMS 4 FREE RELEASE

For those of you who do not play the sims 4, there’s a massive scandal hiding under EA’s belt.

The company has been lying to all the active players in the game.

To say it simply, the game has been officially broken for a long time now. There’s reports of many game-breaking bugs, many disgusting items, and far too many cash grabs.

They have been releasing new content left and right without even bothering to fix the broken content. You know who is fixing this content? Sims’ unpaid modding community.

These amazing individuals are doing all this work, for free, because they love the game. At this point, I wouldn’t imagine playing the game unmodded. These brilliant creators pour in time to fix things that the own developers haven’t even addressed. They are the best of the community, ESPECIALLY those who offer their services for free.

But EA? Maxis? They’re full of shit right now. There’s threats of a “battle pass” being added to a game. What do I mean, “Battle Pass”? You know, that thing in mobile games that won’t let you access the whole game unless you’ve paid money for it. THE SIMS 4 IS CONSIDERING PUTTING IT INTO THE GAME. Though you’ll be able to get the base game packs, chances are, there will be MORE locked in game that you can only get through money. Expansion packs cost 40$. And yet, MOST OF THEM ARE STILL BROKEN. They will not bother to fix their mistakes and instead keep offering cash grab after cash grab to boost money.

You don’t hear from outside the community how dangerously this game has broken. You all remember the legend of No Man’s Sky? That one supposedly amazing game that got rushed and ended up failing miserably because of bugs an the like? Imagine that, but on a bigger scale in an already established community. Base game is broken. You can see your toddlers morph into disgusting creatures before your eyes, with no semblance of continuity. Your game can take forever to load, up to five minutes to get into Create a Sim. Your sim will sometimes actively ignore you. These are the minor things.

Other things that can happen in game is a whole shutdown of the game if it doesn’t like an action you made your sim do. It can and will corrupt your save. That cute family you spent 3 months grinding on? All gone.

Now, the company behind the game has made it a typical money grabber. They do not hire playtesters anymore, making content creators and us, the players, being the ones to say, “Hey! This is broken!” And they take weeks to fix it, if they ever do.

A good voice of complaint comes from Pixelade’s channel on youtube, as he has been very, VERY vocal in letting the community know that the sims 4 doesn’t care much about the players anymore. A comment under his video “MANIPULATION TACTICS?!...”, by user “You like Krabby Patties, don’t you, Squidward,” has brought a lot of weight into a true perspective into this argument.

> “ oh i absolutely agree that this is just a publicity stunt and distraction tactic. if they cared, they'd address the elephant in the room, which at this point isn't even us complaining about the bugged-to-hell, barely-playable-if-playable-AT-ALL mess of a game TS4 has become: it's literally just asking for any kind of acknowledgement of our problems. if a company won't give you something that should not only be the bare minimum, but is the single most important part of ANY company - transparency - then you know you can't trust them even the tiniest bit. this was just the last straw for me. i didn't trust them before. now, no matter what they do, they can never earn that trust back. 6+ weeks of some players unable to play the game at all, a game they could have paid hundreds or even over a thousand dollars for (and not even as a result of DLC they chose to purchase but from a free basegame patch!!) and SILENCE from EA...it's unacceptable. and if they think a free kit is going to make up for that (free basegame doesn't count for anything, because simmers experiencing problems with the game clearly already own that. this is them trying to dupe new players into thinking "wow, the basegame for free AND a free kit! what a great company!") then they're sorely fucking mistaken. and then, the cherry on top - some can't even download the free kit! “

I truly think that this game, something built with love in the beginning, has turned into a flaming pile of dogshit. They do not care about the players, anymore. The shareholders are the only thing keeping the game going. They have lied to us, bribed us, and to make matters worse, hurt a whole community whose main monetary source comes from making this game better. If I had knew this would be the fate of this game, I never would’ve bought it. Never. Please, those of you considering to get this free version, please reconsider. Look into the problems. If you decide that you can live with them, no fault to you. But do not expect the game it was back in 2018. Do not expect transparency. Let these companies, EA and Maxis, finally understand how they’ve fucked up. And if they don’t change it?

Let them burn.

Selfship anniversary

I am a terrible person with words and even worse if I am sleepy, but yes, I decided to establish today as my anniversary of my selfship, Because 4 years ago today I saved my first Squidward image.

Even though I showed Lake just last year(? Well, my crush on Squidward has been going on since October 2019

To say that Squidward has helped me in life is to say an understatement, he has given me strength to live, to be able to feel calm in the worst moments, even so, the road has not been easy, many personal obstacles sometimes tell me that this is not well, or I feel ridiculous about my taste, but they are things that happen and that in the end do not affect me, in that distant 2019 I thought that it would only be a momentary crush that would not last even three months like the characters that I had liked before, but No, he literally changed my life, and after a very traumatic moment, which to this day I have trouble with, many problems... Well, Squidward stayed there for me, maybe my crush is a meaning of not being able to let go of my past, or I just found something goos in all the misfortune of 2020, regardless of that, I am happy with this

I still have a lot of things to say about my selfship story and it was what I had planned but well, university doesn't help, it will be later, while a drawing and a timelapse video

the same thing happened to me tbh, it's grown on me more and more as i relistened to it. wallsocket is defo in my top 5 albums this year.

it's not like i actively disliked it or anything, it's just that it went from "pretty good" to "one of the best albums of 2023" yakno?

like my only real criticism of it is that underscores' dedication to making basically every track over 4 minutes meant that there were a couple that felt bogged down to me.

that being said, there is way more to love about wallsocket than there is to complain about. there were a few tracks that i wasn't enthralled with on the first listen that i'm super in love with now (duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and uncanny long arms come to mind)

but GOD is underscores good at making a melody that sticks with you forever. a month later and i still catch myself going "johnny johnny johnny johnny whoops johnny whoops" out loud and humming the tune from shoot to kill, kill your darlings.

i really really love this new direction. i love the moments in wallsocket that call back to her earlier works (like the ending bit in uncanny long arms), i love hearing borderline jarring transitions to stomp-and-clap country (thinking mostly about that switch in geez louise! good god do i love that moment) i love how difficult wallsocket is to define and how it's clearly still underscores, but not at all what i would have imagined from her.

oh and the samples that are being used are BANGING i love hearing gun noises being used as percussion, i'm almost certain i heard a squidward noise in there, and the "good luck!" producer stamp is utilized SO well across the album.

also it's underscores, i feel like it goes without saying that the story telling is great. she's stepped it up a notch and i hella regret not following the arg, but that's life ig 🤷

my top track is definitely seventyseven dog years, maybe it's because it made me feel seen. i won't get into it because it's a long thing but it really reminds me of my relationship with a couple family members and also just sounds really good!

i like every track, but i think the highlights for me* are: shoot to kill,kill your darlings/horror movie soundtrack, geez louise, and seventyseven dog years.

*i'm excluding the singles because they all slap. no exceptions. i know that they're gonna make it into my spotify wrapped lmao but good lird old money bitch and girls like us make me act up.

uhh idk where else to put this but i mentioned earlier that i wanted to see how you don't even know who i am fit in to the album, and i'm really glad to see that it fits in seamlessly with the rest of wallsocket.

i really liked it, and tbqh i'm still hoping that she'll release a companion piece a la boneyard.

Tone tags are not your punchline.

Tone tags like “/j” “/srs” etc are accessibility tools. They help neurodivergent people understand the explicit tone of written text that would otherwise be only implicit and therefore difficult for us to understand. If you use tone tags in a joking or disingenuous manner, you’re not only going to end up confusing a lot of people, but it’s also just plain ableist to make a joke out of an accessibility tool, something that a lot of us rely on to understand and communicate with people online.

Especially considering the whole point of tone tags is for them to be used in the most genuine, accurate manner possible, someone knowingly misusing them just means they’re doubling down on their ableist disregard for neurodivergent people who might read it.

If you post something somewhere as a joke but end it with a “/srs,” fix it. Delete it. Don’t do it again. Tone tags are not your punchline.

My favorite episodes of spongebob are the ones were spongebob gets genuinely pissed off. Like, spongebob is a character who only rarely gets angry, and only for good reasons after being pushed too far, and it's fucking iconic when he does. The episode where squidward quits his job and crashes at spongebob's house and ends up bossing him around, when spongebob fucking loses it at the end of the episode, it's the best thing. I feel that. It's a whole MONTH! I have some cute little art too. I'm working on two separate fics + dragon!rhys.

the first is called Starlight and the premise is similar to Golden- Rhys is a rival king who kidnaps Feyre to force her fathers hand. Cue Squidward voice OH NO SHES HOT. Feyre hates him. He does hate her for the first 4-5 chapters and a little forest fight where they wrestle on the ground has him in his feelings afterwards

the other is ACOTAR complaint- Rhys is spying on Tamlin as time ticks towards failure. He's a shadow in the woods when he stumbles on Feyre trying to trap the surial. At first he's just fucking with Tamlin but then...you know (OH NO SHES HOT)

obviously dragon!rhys is just our last resident dragon dumbass.

August 26th, Louie

I've watched a lot of movies, including a couple for school. I won't talk about those ones, they didn't really interest me. I hope next week's one is good! Also rewatched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, still great and felt less slow this time although a bit less impactful and still don't really like the time jump, and Burn After Reading, better than the first time and may be the Coen's best film although still had a weak ending, as in the final scene not sequence, and they just kind of dropped Tilda Swindon. And George Clooney's wife shouldn't have been cheating on him, Lame! Ranking: 1. Spongebob 2 2. Puss in Boots 2 3. Barbie - watched twice! 4. Logan Lucky - need to watch again because it was 2am 5. Age of Innocence - I think some of the dialogue flew over my head, was like reading Shakespeare, but still very good Don't know where to put A.I But all of these were good 6. Licorice Pizza And not for the "controversies" around the film, grow up. I did laugh out loud at several points but I think I was laughing at the movie. So, it has that over There Will Be Blood but that was acted well, this was not. Oh yeah, should mention that I hate Paul Thomas Anderson movies. I've seen about half of them and the only one I kind of liked was Boogie Nights, and that was only halfway decent. Don't get me started on Magnolia. The first 15 minutes, which is unrelated to the rest of the film, is the best part and completely lies about the weird coincidences and interconnectivity of the universe. I really wish that the first 'ensemble' type movie I saw wasn't Love Actually because it's, so far, been the best in terms of bringing it all together. And that one didn't even promise to, unlike Magnolia. Take your Bible symbolism and shove it up your ass! But yeah, Licorice Pizza sucked. Hated everyone, disjointed plot, poor acting. Was cool reading people talk about the theme of maturity and how the characters performed it but was not fun to watch. Logan Lucky, I think I missed something because it seemed less clever than it tried to be. But still a lot of fun. Puss in Boots 2, wish it wasn't as overhyped as it was. It was no Spiderverse or Shrek 1 or 2. But still better than the rest, and I actually think the first Puss in Boots is good. Antonio Banderas is so charming, Salma Hayek is still not a good actor but is fucking hot as hell, Perrito, this guy think he Donkey :laughingcrying:, Death's whistle reminded me of Earthbound, Goldilocks and the 3 bears grew on me, didn't really like the music, favourite fearless hero grew out it's welcome, John Mulaney stole the show. Wish I didn't know some of the more funny lines but still laughed a lot. Fun little diatribe, in Shrek 1, the 3 bears are captured. Later we see Papa bear comforting a crying Baby bear. Later still we see a bear skin rug with a bow on it in Lord Farquaad's castle. How Morbid! Then, I watched Spongebob 2. Also had Antonio Banderas. Was not as good as the first. That Reggae song tryin' to be Ocean Man so bad :laughingcrying":. But, still fixed my only real problem with the first movie, no Sandy. Still not enough Sandy. It's weird, I'd say she's more important than Patrick in the show. Anyways, I know she got her just due in the musical. Another fun diatribe, I recorded a video of myself reacting to the trailer of this film almost a decade ago. Never saw it till this month. Was very fun, great idea to have Plankton and Spongebob team up. Did lose the plot a bit when the squidasaurus showed up. And whilst the CGI was incredible, the superhero stuff was not as good. Still, really fun, laughed a lot, and great that Squidward got abs.
