bro all this time we've been joking about akechi being the homura but it was aKIRA FKJHFKD HIM AND HIS REALITY ALTERING TO KEEP THE PERSON HE LOVES W HIM LMAO HHHHH (joking but also hhhhh)
IT’S NOT EVEN A JOKE THO I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS ALLNIGHT
ok ok ok ok ok ok LISTEN
there’s not a lot of hardcore decisions that change fatealtogether in p5 vanilla.  in all of akira’s social links, you can’teven reverse the s link. s links rank up eventually, even ifyou choose all the wrong answers. you can get a game over, but these endingsare pretty standard (akira gets imprisoned/caught, change of heart doesn’thappen). when i was playing the game, i got this feeling like i couldn’t fuckup–not in a way that mattered or was interesting. i used one save the entiretime, except once, to take yaldo’s deal and get the bad ending.
in terms of putting in the work to help your social links, atmost you go into mementos and beat up some people for your friends. evenmaruki’s entire palace can be pretty railroaded (like a lot of p5′s palaces),so you don’t struggle too hard with the place.
but in p5r there’s suddenly a ton of timeline-alteringdecisions, that meaningfully and drastically change the end of the game.
and they’re all related to whether or not akechisurvives.
all of a sudden, if you don’t know what all those dialogue choices do, you have to choose one and see what happens and fuck up and reload and do it all again. you have to try and try and try and try.
for the first time, you gotta really really really really WORK tosave one of your friends. not just akira. you, the player, become homura going that extra mile and then some to save akechi.
because all these decisions are player-controlled, all of a sudden the livestreamer’s saving all over the place andusing different files because we don’t even know when and where he needs to bein the game timeline in order to change akechi’s fate. i was fucking cacklingwhen tim started reloading saves the first time in order to change the beddecision. in game mechanics, he was literally homuraing his way to save akechi.likemollypaup pointed out, there are SO many hoops you have to jump through inorder to save akechi.
P5r does a very clever thing wrt being a remake of anexisting story: p5r goes into the storyline with the assumption that youknow that akechi is slated to die, despite the fact that some players reallywant him to live. by the time we get to the third trimester, both of thosefeelings become explicit: akira explicitly willed akechi backto life, and akechi explicitly is destined to die at the endof the dreamworld. P5r plays with the idea that akechi is a character weliterally all know is supposed to die, and then introduces an entire storylinemechanic by which we have to confront the fact that in-universe, akechi is nowsupposed to die again, and that akira as a character with feelings and acharacter arc doesn’t want this to happen. (ALSO HELLO REMIND ME TO TALKABOUT AKIRA’S NEW CHARACTER ARC SOME OTHER TIME)
in other words, akechi’s survival is now explicitlythe emotional stakes of the story. in terms of narrative structure, akechi becomesakira’s reason for fighting as hard as he does. akechi’s survival becomes amatter of whether or not you can change fate—fate that was decreed by persona 5classic’s linear narrative that renders the player unable to change the boiler roomscene no matter what you do, and also for in-universe reasons.
and then p5r was like: if you want a good ending where helives, you better fucking work for it.
(especially so if you need to spend the entirety of p5classic’s timeline collecting jose’s stars, but that hasn’t been confirmedyet.)
none of the other s links are like this!!! you don’t have tobounce around royal’s timeline looking for some way to keep him alive likeyou’re sissel from ghost trick!! you don’t get entire different game endingsbased on whether or not you did your akechi-saving homework!!! in the othersocial links, it just all falls into place.
the relationship between how much effort you invest in aperson and how much you care goes both ways. the really interesting thing aboutvideo games is that when achieving something is hard, actually achieving itfeels more meaningful. in the s links where the game kind of hands the goodending to you, it always felt to me like I hadn’t earned it. when the gamewithholds something from you, you start to want it more. people with acompletionist streak playing p5r WILL come out of it feeling some type of wayabout akechi because it’s so fucking god damn hard to save him, and because somuch work goes into accomplishing it.
and of course it goes the opposite way too: one of the clearestways that someone can show that they really care about someone is forthem to go the extra mile for them.
in-universe, akira does go the extra mile. he goes withtoranosuke to his weird political dinners. he accompanies iwai to a yakuzastandoff. he goes through an entire palace for futaba. but for me, theplayer? these events are pretty railroaded and scripted. I myself am not goingthe extra mile. i am expecting there to be a palace and a boss that I need tofight for futaba and I more or less know that I need to level up in order to doit. it’s straightforward. i as the player am not saving and reloading andreloading again trying to figure out what dialogue decision specifically willsave futaba, because futaba’s storyline doesn’t have that opportunity tofuck up so horrendously that she dies (barring getting a game over). Akechi isthe first character in persona 5 that I’m really feeling like it’s genuinely difficultto help him, because of p5 classic’s assertion that he seems to die no matterwhat you do, because of the decision-making process in p5r, and also becausetakuto is apparently stronger than fucking GOD if you want to get past him andget any sort of good ending.
tl;dr the really cool thing about p5r right now to me isthat the game makes you, the player, fight for akechi’ssurvival. like!!!!!!! it’s a really clever way of showing how much akira mustreally really really want to save this one boy in particular, againstall fucking odds including death and reality itself in a way that’svery specific to the video game genre!!!!!!!

I would like to hear what you have to say about p5r
Oof so like–bearing in mind that I can’t understand Japanese, did not watch most of the livestream, and very much believe we all need to calm our takes down until the English release comes out so we have a better understanding of what is actually happening yadda yadda yadda–
I’m excited. I’m very excited. It looks really really good. They really dug into the meat of Goro’s character and served us a supreme fucking feast in that respect, and I’m very glad for that. His confidant is amazing, from what we can get from reading @lokiarsene‘s translations. His very central role in third trimester arc is excellent. The way Kasumire and Takuto are integrated into the stories of the existing cast rather than dominating them, a la Marie from P4G (also bearing in mind I haven’t played P4G but that’s the general impression I’ve gotten of the game), is also excellent. Additions should comment on what is already there.
I’m disappointed Atlus seems to be going for a Big Tease about whether Goro survives in the end. I know exactly why they’re doing it–so they can string us along and hype up Scramble–but I hate that they’re doing it. I get that they claim Scramble is a direct sequel but like….is it? Is it really? My money is on Goro and Sumire being DLC characters for that game.
When I say “shuake canon now,” I’m saying it with the exact same degree of belief as when I say that I personally am a Hugo award winner because I have fanfiction posted on AO3. Shuake is unfortunately not canon, because Atlus are a bunch of cowards. I haven’t played Catherine so I can’t speak to how well they handle Vincent’s relationship with Rin in that game, but the fact that they let players date Rin, a crossdresser, in Catherine, but don’t let you date any of the guys in Royal is….not a good look for Atlus. We’ve been very clearly and very successfully queerbaited, and I can both acknowledge that and make fun of Atlus for accidentally coding Akira’s relationship with Goro as so heavily romantic that you really can compare it to Shinji and Kaworu or Utena and Anthy or Madoka and Homura, but at the end of the day if Atlus were allies (and they’re not), they’d have cut those gross predatory gay men who hit on Akira and Ryuji on not just one but TWO occasions.
I will not give Atlus credit that Atlus categorically does not deserve.
I’m seeing a lot of valid criticism of the game as well. The addition of cognitive Shiho in a bunny costume to Kamoshida’s boss fight is fucking disgusting and I want to personally destroy the career of whatever jackass came up with that idea and also whatever other jackass approved it. Ryuji still gets beat up by the girls after Shido’s palace collapses, because haha, female on male violence is harmless and funny. You can still be an absolute dick to Mishima.
Most frustrating for me is that Haru remains criminally underdeveloped and it looks like hers and Futaba’s feelings about Goro aren’t really explored with remotely any degree of what I would personally consider nuance (and believe me, as someone whose father was murdered, I have a very low bar where that’s concerned because nuance on that subject is not a thing most media is capable of). There also doesn’t seem to be much direct acknowledgement from Goro (going off of what @lokiarsene has already translated and posted and also told me while she’s working on future translations) of the very personal hell he put Futaba and Haru through, which I would again stress–I have a low bar where that’s concerned.
What I’m most interested in is how the third trimester arc is focused on mental health, specifically mental health care, a thing for which Japan is famously garbage at managing. Given that the Persona franchise is one of the few examples of overt Japanese counter-culture we get access to in the West (in that the games are openly critical of some pretty major aspects of Japanese society), I’m curious to see the extent to which Maruki’s arc critiques the Japanese mental health system. Is it just going to be about shitty malpractice? Is it going to comment on how mental illness and neurodivergency are just covered up and shut away? Is it going to talk about how when people do go to doctors, they usually just get prescribed medication as a band-aid but therapy is basically nonexistent in any meaningful widespread form?
Given the Persona series’s track record, Royal seems to be pretty par for the course: a flawed mixed bag with some really solid writing and some really glaring blind spots, if not abject failures. From what I’ve seen of Royal, I think the solid bits weigh out the not so solid bits, at least for me personally. I look forward to engaging with the finished product in a language I can understand and then picking it all to pieces with everyone else on here, come March.

Benard went on to say that they would continue to add further content Dead Cells. The title has already seen a new custom game mode and some extra challenges.

In a blog post Bethesda have shared their plans for Fallout 76 for 2019, this includes future content involving player vending and a new PvP mode.
A new update will come out later this month, this includes improvements similar to that of the last update which covered improvements to the C.A.M.P. mechanics, S.P.E.C.I.A.L. respec and push to talk feature for PC players.
The next updates tease “new quests, weekly in-game events, new Vaults opening, a new PvP mode, Player Vending and much more.” The biggest addition will be player vending, allowing players to put up their items for sale in-game.
The mention of new quests, in-game events and new Vaults means more content. What the vaults will contain is another mystery yet to be revealed.

FromSoftware
The developer of Dark Souls FromSoftware apparently has two games in the works but has yet to reveal what they are.
According to Hidetaka Miyazki the studio president in an interview with 4Gamer.net (via Gematsu) there are two titles in production which he describes as  “[From Software]-esque games” but is apparently no where near ready to tell the public about it.
Miyazaki also made a comment about the recent Bloodborne Easter Egg found in their VR title Déraciné. While speculation was at an all time high of a Bloodborne sequel, Miyazaki says it was simply there because “I, as well as several staff, like the title Bloodborne…” and calls it “pure mischief“. While this might put a damper on a possible Bloodborne 2, there might still be some hope in future if this is not one of the current titles in production.

The showcase includes some Playstation exclusives including Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding and The Last of Us Part II. Other third-party titles include Devil May Cry 5, Kingdom Hearts III and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Persona 5 R
Atlus have been hard at work developing the Persona franchise, a reveal from them teases Persona 5 R which could be an enhanced version of Persona 5.
In a brief video which followed a broadcast of the Persona animation special Dark Sun in Japan, “Persona 5 R” was shown on screen. Although not officially shown as a title in the video, there was a website address P5R.jp which suggests a new game.
The teaser video features Tokyo’s Shibuya district with tv screens plastered with the P5 icon. A message also follows the video saying “New Projects”and “2019.3” indicating more news will be revealed in March 2019. At this stage it is not definitive whether the new projects refers to P5R or other spinoff games, as this could be possible as we have already seen a few in the franchise.
It looks like the title will also be coming to the Playstation 4 platform as the video begins with the logo, however there could be further platforms revealed later on.
