Okay, I’m just going to stop looking up various biting/stinging flies to find the one that accosted me... I accidentally found out there’s more than one kind of earwig (the bane of my existence, nightmare fuel, let me off this planet bug) and I absolutely did not need to know that.  I didn’t ask about earwigs, Google.  I never ask about earwigs. *has a Blathers meltdown*

Carth’s sister, Fiona!
Here, actually, I’ll let Carth tell you about her. Where did I put that piece.
_____________________________
Fiona always squashed the spiders.
The first time Carthach remembered it was was when she was six and he was eight; he heard her shriek and he came running. She had cornered an enormous spider - so big he thought it must be Blight-touched - and she was desperate that it not get away where she couldn’t see it, or she’d never sleep again. Carth didn’t blame her for that.
She frantically demanded that he kill it - he grabbed a boot without thinking and hurled it at the spider and the spider dropped from the wall and scuttled around behind the furniture and across the floor, eliciting mass chaos and screams from both children. Carth panicked and tried to pull her away. Fiona grabbed the boot and squashed the spider.
In the silence afterward there was a victorious gleam in her eyes; they nervously examined the dead spider, disgusted with the squelched bug innards, and they set to laughing about it. Always after that, Fiona squashed the bugs - it always with the triumphant look of the dragon-slayer on her face.
Fiona had always been the brave one. You’d never know it from the way she followed him, the way she looked up to him; she was quiet and thoughtful and often mistaken for shy, but Carthach knew better. Fiona was keen, direct, and decisive. She said he gave her confidence - she sheltered in his shadow, where she could watch and wait. He knew he couldn’t keep her safe... but did the best he could to be a safe place for her.
You know. When they weren’t calling each other names and throwing mud in their hair.
(Carthach’s opinion of bugs was not helped when the next year or so he was climbing on an old wooden structure and the rotten beams gave way beneath him, showering him with a mess of beetles and earwigs. Nor the summer after that when he accidentally disturbed a nest of hornets.)
After that, Carth avoided insects of any kind whenever he could; even butterflies and moths, while appreciated, were viewed with a certain vague suspicion. It was only crickets he liked, and even then really only the sound of them. Crickets were like timber-wards. When you could hear them, you knew everything was okay.
Now, Carth sat on the front porch of the inn at Pepper Ridge and looked out over the low swells of the fields to the south, and listening to the crickets singing and whirring in the heavy air. There was a storm brewing - most likely coming in from over the ridge to the northeast, where the hot air from the sear-sea hit the cooler winds from the west. The sky seemed to loom and lumber darkly overhead, and the smell of distant rain and warm earth was on the breeze.
He smiled and breathed in, feeling the slight prickle of the weather over his skin. On days like this, he felt half his age - minus the missing 300 years, at least...

DA RP write-up #17.1
Okay finally, I’m going to start posting write-ups again. I fell a bit off the bandwagon there, didn’t I? Anyway, I hate to post this stuff out of order, but I figured I might get motivated to finish the rest of these (ie rest of campaign 16 and the two mini-adventures in between) if I put the rest out there (plus I really need to clear my drafts, can’t find nothing :D).
This campaign was helmed by Boshara’s player and was played in November and December of 2018.
The story starts with our party being dropped off at Gwaren in Southern Ferelden. From there we are heading towards Takatalvenvara, where a famous Fereldan dog trainer lives.
Nesta also joins our party. Cahair has promised to take her to the Dalish so she can eventually, hopefully, get home.
We travel for several days, and come across a nice little village. Nesta and Boshara decide to stay the night there to get some daughter-mom bonding time, while the rest of us will head to the next town.
We get some way away from the town and meet a strange elven woman on the road, who tells that there is a storm coming, so we should go find shelter in a nearby manor turned tavern.
She’s like real suspicious, and everybody’s really tense after meeting her.
There’s rustling in the bushes and Randy throws his hammer at the sound, killing a poor bunny.
Cahair grabs the body for supper later.
As the elven woman had said, the party comes upon a manor in the middle of the woods.
Our heroes decide to go check inside, Alf stays behind to watch over the bronto and horses.
Inside the house they find an old lady by the name of Renata, who is very happy to welcome us to the tavern.
Renata goes to get Alf to come join the others.
While Renata is gone Cahair goes to check the kitchen and drops the bunny off there.
When everyone is back, the world suddenly shifts and everyone blacks out.
Our heroes wake up on the floor and realize that the door is not opening and all the windows are boarded over. They are stuck in this strange house.
Magic doesn’t work, and everything feels somehow wrong, and Aarli Hauveli is gone!
Randy and Humbert try to break the windows, while the others go and explore the house.
Alf and Elspet find bedrooms with pillows that have their names embroidered on them. Cahair and Elspet get the doublebed in the master bedroom while the others have the single beds in the other bedroom.
There’s also bookcases with empty books and landscape paintings behind windows. Strange indeed.
While we are exploring, Randy hears giant footsteps and someone brings in food (lasagna, yay) and a sign that says welcome home.
The lasagna gets thrown to the floor. No one is feeling much like eating right now.
Randy writes a message with blood asking to be let out to the person when they get back.
Cahair realizes that he can see with both of his eyes and he tries to pull the glass eye off, but it feels like a real eye, so he gives up on that (despite looking like a glass eye).
Randy also notices that he can hear well enough with his damaged ear and Humbert realizes that his sword is a replica.
One of the rooms has a fireplace. It’s quite tight, but Cahair crams himself into the chimney and climbs out of the house that way.
Once on the roof, Cahair realizes that they are in a doll house, and there’s several other houses just like the one they are in around him.
He climbs back down and they discuss this predicament. It is decided that they should try to check who lives in the other houses.
Before anything could be done, our heroes hear that the giant footsteps are returning.
Cahair climbs hurriedly back up the chimney to check who their captor is and sees that it is Renata.
Renata has brought some food for the other houses. Once she leaves our heroes start looking for a way to open up the house.
Alf and Cahair find the hinges of the house. It seems that the roof of the doll house can be lifted up.
Our heroes gather to do some lifting, Elspet especially shows her strength in the task (nat 18 ftw!).
The roof is up, and our heroes stuff some furniture between the roof and the house so they can climb out.
After they’ve escaped, they kick the roof back closed, so maybe it’ll take a while for Renata to notice that they’ve escaped.
Next order is to go check out the other houses. One contains a Fereldan businessman named Aulis, our old friend  Kempers (?!) and the lady elf who we met on the road.
Her name is Vivaren and she claims to have never met us before, but Humbert isn’t buying it, and gets a bit violent with her.
We ask Kempers to join us. He’s a bit reluctant about that at first. Apparently he enjoyed the quiet life being trapped in a doll house, but finally he gives in and follows us.
The next house has a lady dwarf by the name of Siddel Helmi and a Dalish elf.
Siddel in of Orzammar origin, and she refuses to leave the house. Randy talks her down, promising that he can make sure she’ll be admitted back to Orzammar once this is all over.
Not before Humbert threatens the lady however.
The Dalish elf joins our little party.
Our heroes start looking around the room they are in, it appears to be a cellar room. There’s a workbench, where the new doll houses and furniture are made.
From those objects our heroes arm themselves with pins and needles.
Elspet tests her magic again, now outside the doll house. It only causes Humbert to flash weirdly.
Renata comes back to bring water for us, so our party hides beneath the cushions and debris on the workbench.
Before we move on, Randy returns to the house to hide the water container, so Renata may think we’re still in there.
Our little party start towards the staircase from which Renata came.
Before we can get to it though, we are attacked by an earwig (maybe? a wormy boy with pincers). The critter takes a chunk out of Randy and impales Alf with its pincers, but our heroes manage to bring it down.
Everyone is super worried about Alf, Cahair takes off his shirt to tend to his wounds.
Alf appears to be a bit loopy, as he keeps repeating that he is fine and everything is “just cotton”.
Finally we make it through the staircase, which leads to a doorway that was hidden inside a bookcase
Next time we’ll start exploring this huge house and hopefully find some way to get our bodies back.
