My eyes open slowly as the Hell’s sun’s rays hit my face through the window pain of my glass doors; leading to my recently built balcony. I sit up to stretch my arms out while letting out a big yawn. Slowly pulling back the covers, I trudge out of bed as I make my way to the bathroom to start my morning routine. I soon then step out the foggy bathroom; already dressed for the day as I finish drying my hair. I make my way my vanity; sitting down as I go through my self care products. As I’m putting on lotion on my arms and legs, I hear some knocking coming from my sliding glass door. I look confused as to who that could be, but then remember the only person who greets me from my balcony was none other than the king himself. He waved at me as he presses his cheek against the glass “You gonna let me in (Y/N)?” I giggle at him as I make my way to the door; sliding it open as he proceeds to step inside. It’s funny how Luci and me got to be really good friends now. The first time we met was just like any other day; going through the motions and joining the group activities on time. It had been 3 months since being a part of the hotel on that day actually. It was that morning Charlie made this announcement saying that her dad was on the way here to see how things were going. It was nerve racking to say the least as I’ve never been in front of the King himself. But when introductions were made and small talk turned into joining the group activity we had planned that day. All the way up to him and me literally having a sleepover in my room; sitting at my vanity together while talking and sharing each other’s products we use. He made me laugh hysterically when I saw him put hair curlers on and he quotes “Whaaat~? They help give my hair its iconic style. Gotta look pretty for the public.” I was rolling when he placed his chin on top of his hands as he interlocked his fingers; batting his eyelashes for effect.

Ever since we would always hang out, thus making him come by the hotel more often. He really is good company. His goofball energy always knew how to cheer me up. We would talk about everything, including some secrets no one else knew. But lately, there’s been a secret that I can’t really bring up around him. I’ve kind of started developing feelings for him, which has became really conflicting. Before we met officially, I would hang around Alastor from time to time when I first became a part of the hotel. He was charismatic and polite when welcoming me to the hotel. We would occasionally sit on his balcony; having a cup of tea as we chatted about how our days went. We even had some very interesting and intellectual discussions on similar interests we shared. He went as far as showing me around his radio tower, which he never does to just anyone. It was even more of a privilege when he invited me to do a podcast with him. He told me that he enjoyed our conversations so much that he wanted to put it on the air. It was a lot of fun doing it too. After our podcast, there was surprisingly a lot of positive feedback. It seemed people really loved our views on things and wanted more. Soon through those 3 months, once a week, we had a podcast together and he called it “Radio Tea Time.” I thought it was clever since we started having these talks over a cup of tea.

Now here’s where the confliction of my developing feelings for Luci comes to play here. Since I’ve been doing these podcasts with Alastor, then just enjoyed in each others company after the show; I’ve also developed feelings for him too. Honestly, I don’t think I’m gonna get anywhere with Alastor to be fair. He never was interested in those sort of things to begin with. My best bet would be to pursue Luci all the way, but this part of me doesn’t want to forget my feelings for Alastor either. “Hey (Y/N), are you doing ok?” Luci snaps me out of my thoughts as I give him a reassuring smile. “Oh yes Luci I’m alright. I was just thinking about what I was gonna do after breakfast today.” He pauses for a moment to think of something. His face then lights up as he has a brilliant idea. “I got it! How about I take you and everyone in the hotel to Lu Lu World!” I look at him baffled by the tremendous offer. Seriously?! Lu Lu World?!?! I’ve never been there before and always wanted to go, but could never afford it. “For real?!?! You would take us to Lu Lu World?!?!” He grins sheepishly at me “Of course dear! I know the owner personally~” I laughed as I lightly punch him in the shoulder “Oh stop it you goofball.” He laughs as he then places his hand on the small of my back; directing me towards my bedroom door “Come on, let’s go tell the others on today’s change of plans.”

(Luci’s P.O.V)

I was pretty excited to show (Y/N) around Lu Lu World, since it her first time being here. Of course I was excited to spend more time with my daughter and all her friends at the park too. But to be honest, I really wanted to see (Y/N’s) eyes light up by all the amazing sights she was gonna see. As soon as we arrived at the entrance, she squealed in excitement like a kid in a candy store. Everyone and I had to chase her down cause she was so excited to ride some rides already. The first ride she wanted to ride first was the roller coaster call “The Second Death.” This ride is very popular to visitors so the line was super long, but luckily I’m the king so everyone and me can cut the line through VIP. The ride never disappoints with all its twists and turns. The ride will always leave your stomach doing loops, thus why so many sinners get sick afterwards. After the coaster, we then proceeded to the mini games that’s spread through out the park. I think (Y/N) enjoyed playing the games more than the rides. I even played a game with her cause she wanted the grand prize, which was a big stuffed yellow duck that wore a cute red bow tie. Of course me being the king I easily won it for her. “We have a winner!!! Here you go sir!!!” I take the duck from the imp behind the counter and hand it to her “For you, sweetheart.” She went all giddy and pulled me in for a tight hug “Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!!”

She then lets me go and heads towards the group; showing them what she has. A smile takes over my face as I watch how happy (Y/N) was right now. Seeing her smile is all the serotonin I need to keep going through this eternal life in hell. Since her and I have be really good friends since first meeting her; she’s always brought this glowing aura everywhere she went. She was always helping my daughter around the hotel whenever she can. Even when Charlie insisted that she could do it herself, (Y/N) always persuaded her otherwise to say yes to her help. Sometimes (Y/N’s) kindness would shine just as brightly as Charlie’s. They really were the definition of being the best of friends. “That was really nice of you dad!” I jump and turn to see Charlie standing behind me. “Ah Charlie! I didn’t see you there sweetie.” I straighten my coat and hat while dusting off my sleeves “I’m really glad that you found a friend in (Y/N) just like I do!” She smiles as she gives me a hug as well. “Any friend of yours is a friend of mine sweetie.” She lets go as she leads me back to the group as we continue onto the next ride. Sometimes I wish I was more honest with myself, especially with my daughter. I honestly don’t know how much longer I can keep this secret of mine.

In long story short, the longer I spent time with (Y/N)….the more I started to like her…..like….really like her. What do they call it these days? A crush? Yeah that sounds about right. But we have such a good thing going already; I really don’t want to mess anything up. Ever since Lilith and I separated, I’ve been scared to move on like this; thinking maybe she would come back. But since meeting (Y/N); helping me through some tough times and encouraging me to take care of myself; things have changed tremendously and I’m so afraid to take the next step. What if she doesn’t feel the same? What if this ruins our friendship if I decide to make a move? I don’t know what to do anymore!!!!

(Alastor’s P.O.V)

I honestly never intended to come to this wretched place they have the nerve to call an “Amusement Park” There’s nothing really amusing about it. Just simple lack luster thrills all for a ridiculous price. The only reason why I’m even here is because (Y/N) expressed interest on coming here. It’s fascinating really. We have so many common interests that we have expressed over our podcast; and yet here she is getting excited over something as simple as a theme park. Now that I find amusing. Her excitement is the only reason I’m still here; walking around this place along with a buffoon that calls himself a king. Watching (Y/N) run around; getting easily excited by one thing after another would be more entertaining; If Lucifer wasn’t following her around like a lost puppy. I will never understand how she can be “friends” with him out of all beings of hell. Husker I can understand. Angel is pushing it, but is fine. Even Charlie I can definitely understand, due to how much alike they are naturally. But Lucifer? He doesn’t honestly offer anything except the title, which doesn’t mean shit to begin with. I don’t know why this bothers me so much. These things usually don’t have me even taking a second glance at; let alone look its way. For some unholy reason, I seethe at the sight of Lucifer getting too close to (Y/N).

What is my deal?! I never waste my time on petty thoughts like this!! Why should I care?! Why do I care?!? This is not becoming of me!!! I need to focus on something else other than this. Just pretend that he’s not there. Focus more on (Y/N) and how entertaining she is. I soon then watch her grab the grand prize from Lucifer as she hugged him tightly for it. I grip my staff; almost bending it out of shape as I see Lucifer watch her walk away after the hug; him smiling as he looks at her….differently than usual. What is that look? What does it mean? WHY DO I STILL EVEN CARE?!?! I had a bad feeling this would be a bad idea to come. But something wanted me to, thus pushing all rational thoughts out of the question. That reason other than (Y/N) being amusing; I don’t know what else this feeling is. When I see (Y/N) being….close to Lucifer; I instantly want to kick his teeth in.

Why am I getting so possessive over (Y/N)?! I would never do anything like this for anyone!!! Yet here we are!!! I need to figure out things before I drive myself even more insane than I already am. Soon enough I will get answers to this conundrum, but right now I need to focus on how to keep my demeanor afloat while I’m still here.

butlerfamupdates I actually applaud People Magazine for this. All day magazine’s have posted Austin’s cutest moments with Luci and talked about what a wonderful Dad he is - which no one would ever doubt to think he is - but Luci’s mom is very much present as well and deserves love too. Luci loves both her parents. It’s normal for a kid to have favorites, it doesn’t make the other parent ‘bad.’

Okay, with Return to Walpurgis or Walpurgis Rising or whatever they're calling it coming out later this year, we have to expect that it's going to totally destroy all of our headcannons about how Homura's post-Rebellion world looks like and works. So, until then, let's get a few more additions to my "And they were roommates" KyoSaya AU, in which Kyoko moves in with Sayaka's family and doesn't realize that they're a couple for several years, because she is, in fact, an idiot lesbian god.

Now, the assumption I've seen a lot of times is that Sayaka's parents would be put off by Kyoko, as she has that edgy delinquent energy. However, people often forget that the whole rebel thing is fairly new, and Kyoko actually grew up as a happy church girl who loved her parents and was probably close with all the church elders and stuff. So, while she has interesting views regarding the natural order of things, she still has a lot of respect for things like the family unit and the parent/child bond and stuff like that. As such, while Sayaka was nervous AF to introduce Kyoko to her family, Kyoko shocked her by turning up the charm and makes an amazing first impression for them, so much so that when Sayaka questions Kyoko about where the heck this socially competent and respectful Kyoko came from, Kyoko is all confused like, "Isn't that how you're supposed to treat other people's families?"

Anyway, Kyoko becomes a regular at the Miki residence, though Sayaka's family does notice how dodgy she is whenever asked about her personal life. And she sort of latches onto Sayaka's parents as a sort of surrogate family. Meanwhile, they start to suspect that there's something going on between the girls, but decide to respect their privacy.

However, when Sayaka's dad is out running errands one day, he notices a commotion at a local convenience store, which turns out to be some ragged street kid getting caught shoplifting, and he's shocked to find out that it's Kyoko. Like, isn't this our daughter's polite and upstanding best friend?

Mr. Miki steps in and offers to pay for anything damages in exchange for the girl, and takes Kyoko aside to talk in private. Kyoko is humiliated and freaking out, but Mr. Miki manages to calm her down and, over ice cream, coaxes the full story out of her. Naturally, he's horrified, and calls his wife.

Kyoko moves in with them that same night.

At first, Sayaka has no idea what to make of this new turn. She's relieved that everything is out in the open and her parents were so accepting, as she had been terrified of how they might react were they to learn of how Kyoko was feeding herself, but by then her crush is in full force, and now Kyoko is literally living with them. As for Kyoko, she seems a little broken and depressed at first, feeling like a total mooch, and it takes her some time to accept that they genuinely do care about her and aren't just taking her in out of pity. However, over time she comes to love her new life, especially since she no longer needs to shoplift just to have breakfast. Plus, she gets to spend all her time with her best friend!

However, the Mikis pretty much figured out that Sayaka is down bad, and they're pretty sure the feelings are mutual, but Kyoko's behavior is so perplexing to them that while they consider putting them in separate rooms, they eventually decide to back off and let things play out. They do try to ask Kyoko about it, only to be hit with, "Yeah, Sayaka's great, isn't she? I don't know why Kyousuke didn't go for her. If I were a boy, I would never let her go!" And they're like, "Has no one told this girl that lesbianism exists?" And when they hesitantly question Sayaka about it, she, being a terrible liar, avoids and deflects like crazy, so they leave it as is.

Anyway, years later after the girls have gone to college and they finally get the call that Kyoko has figured out that girls liking girls is an option, they're enormously relieved but so very confused as to why it took so danged long.

Sword and Mirror - a Lacus Clyne Analysis

“First… decide. And then do it. It’s the only way to achieve anything.”

Do you want to read ~8.000 words of Lacus Clyne character analysis? I hope so, because that’s what I got for you today.

When I watched SEED, I was wholly convinced I would dislike Lacus and everything she stands for. I have never been more wrong. Lacus is a tricky character to grasp - the show narrates her story largely through themes, blank spaces and parallel storytelling. As a result, I understand how she can seem quite flat on a casual viewing. I promise you right now, there is more to her role in the story than meets the eye.

In a 2020 interview, Director Fukuda said: “I do remember [Writer Morosawa] saying that the idea of Lacus Clyne was that she would be a mirror of other people, and that was why she was necessary to reflect other people’s hearts.”

The primary mirrors for Lacus are Flay in SEED and the Durandal/Meer combo in Destiny, so these will be our focal angle for unraveling her character - because the question is not just “what does the mirror say about other people?” it is also “what is inherent to Lacus that is able to reflect these (often negative) characters so well?”

Lacus’ story includes a lot of interesting ideas about power, agency, and gender performativity. I am here today to make my case to all of you, to present to you the Lacus I came to love - a girl who would love to be ordinary, but who cannot ignore the ideological power her image has become entrenched with.

We’re going to be following Lacus’ appearances more or less chronologically here, with digressions into related topics when it fits thematically.

Starting us off, we can’t talk about Lacus’ early scenes without also talking about Flay Allster. Lacus and Flay are two sides of the same coin and the show beats us over the head with that pretty much from the first time we meet Lacus.

Flay and Lacus arriving on the Archangel follows the exact same script: a girl exits a lifeboat, floating through the hangar, into Kira who blushes at the proximity and informs her that this is an Earth Forces vessel. The two scenes are merely four episodes apart, serving as a giant blinking billboard to tell the viewer: compare and contrast these two!!

At this stage of their lives, Lacus and Flay are in nearly identical situations. Their mothers are out of the picture, having passed when they were young. Their fathers are important politicians of their respective faction. Each of them is engaged to a boy they did not choose as part of a ploy to further their fathers’ political agenda.

That is hitting right on a theme SEED explores with most of its main cast - children as extensions of their parent’s will. As they exist at this early stage of the story, Lacus and Flay are each tools to further their fathers’ reach. The fact that both of them seem to have positive emotional relationships with their fathers does not diminish this aspect - in fact, I’d argue it underlines it. Both of them want to live up to their fathers’ legacies and willingly accept their place in it.

This means that there is a level of performativity that permeates every aspect of their lives. We see this most clearly with Flay - every part of her day to day persona is carefully curated to show herself as a perfect little lady. We know that this act is directly linked to pleasing her father, because it includes doing things for her father’s benefit such as writing love letters to Sai despite not actually liking him or putting in unusual effort to look her best for reuniting with her dad. She acts out the perfect hyperfeminine daughter that George Allster wants to present to the world. Flay’s sweetness is a manipulation - a way to exert power, first on her father’s and then on her own behalf. This is why Flay keeps up the performance, even once we have seen the real Flay as a much darker personality. It’s the only way she’s been taught to assert agency and thus her only strategy to protect herself.

Lacus is rather similar about strategically using her hyperfeminine charm when needed be. Her initial episodes on the Archangel serve as a perfect example of this.

But first, we have to elaborate on her background. She’s a popular idol singer on the PLANTs but her career is, like everything else, something that is tailor-made to promote her father’s moderate politics. When Meer describes Lacus’ job in Destiny, she does it like this: “[Her job] is to actively pursue ways to help the PLANTs and the world achieve peace.” Tellingly, the line is placed over an image of Lacus and her father.

So we know that Lacus is politically active by this point, even if just as her father’s mouthpiece. We also know she is in this sector of space as part of a ceremonial delegation. She is literally engaged to Athrun in a bid to reign in Patrick Zala’s extremism by making the public see the Clyne and Zala families as a unity. What I am getting at is that there is absolutely no way Lacus is oblivious to the context she finds herself in when she boards an Earth Forces ship. When she acts as though she were, it’s deliberate.

Lacus only takes decisive action when she feels that she knows all the facts and she likes to go see the circumstances of a situation for herself. This is something we’ll talk about a lot more later on, but it is already useful to keep in mind here.

Lacus’ time on the Archangel is characterized by her leaving her (locked) room again and again to wander the ship, then acting oblivious as to why anybody would be upset about the enemy leader’s daughter freely scoping out the place.

(Her mild ‘Oh?’ here always gets me.) It’s the kind of behavior she can get away with precisely because she is a hyperfeminine teenage girl - if she were an adult male refugee instead, she might have been arrested for pulling a stunt like that. But being as she is, the exaggerated naivety somehow registers as believable for everyone on the ship and she gets off scott-free.

What I love about Lacus and Flay is the level of awareness they both have about gender being a performance that can be put on for gain. Both of them are genuinely pretty girly, but more than that they know how to play up the girliness and use it to exploit gender biases to their advantage. They know people are likely to underestimate them and/or be sweet on them and they bank on it fairly often.

Of course this isn’t to say Lacus’ personality is one big fake and there is a ‘real Lacus’ in there who is diametrically opposed to how she presents herself. Even during the Archangel stay, we see Lacus in private and we find a gentle girl. She prays, she sings, she plays silly little games with her Haro. Lacus’ naive act is effective precisely because it is merely a slight over-acting of her regular self.

This is confirmed by Director Fukuda when he states that “about half of her behavior is natural, but she can also play the role of herself. She is her true self when she confronts Rau Le Creuset and she is also her true self when she plays with Haro.”

While we’re on the topic of Haro, I find pink Haro to be a bit of a curiosity. In Gundam’s history as a franchise, Haros have usually represented something about their owner. For Amuro, Kamille, Hathaway and Uso their Haros were manifestations of the childhood they were clinging to / that was clinging to them.

Lacus’ pink Haro is the first Haro in Gundam to be willful and rude instead of cheerful and supportive (though Haro in Victory certainly packs a punch). It also has the rather interesting catchphrase: “I won’t accept that”. What does that say about Lacus, if anything?

I would argue that it is a first pointer towards the strength of personality and opinion that Lacus camouflages behind her innocent exterior. During these early episodes, there are two major hints towards the Haro symbolism.

The first is simple: Haro is Lacus’ excuse for constantly leaving her room. See, it is Haro who won’t allow them to be locked in. This is totally out of her innocent public persona’s control, see?!

The second one follows when Lacus leaves the Archangel and we first see proof positive that she’s been playing dumb while in enemy territory. As soon as Lacus is safe in Athrun’s suit, she addresses Rau in a commanding tone never heard before.

“Stop it at once. Are you trying to turn this location into a battlefield when there is a representative of the memorial delegation here? I will not allow it! Stop your combat operations at once!”

Suddenly, we learn that Lacus has perfect awareness of her own importance and a clear grasp on political/military speech style. We are forced to recontextualize the clueless girl we’ve spent the last few episodes with, turning our perception of the character on its head. But the viewer isn’t the only person shocked by this. As Athrun stares at his gentle fiancée in bewilderment, we are treated to Haro’s shout of “I won’t accept that! I won’t accept that!” which perfectly echoes Lacus’ speech and feelings - meanwhile Lacus herself just gives an angelic smile, acting as though she has no idea why what she just did should be astounding in the first place:

The disparity between Haro-as-the-inner-voice and Lacus’ outer performance as she reverts to her usual ‘public self’ is used deliberately, foreshadowing the many surprises Lacus still has up her sleeve.

Lacus is then moved to the ZAFT vessel Vesalius, where she continues to wander about against Athrun’s advice. Though she is no longer in enemy territory, it makes sense for Lacus to keep up the naive act so she can scope out the ship as much as possible. After all, she sees herself as a civilian who wants to end the war. She has no specific loyalty to ZAFT as a military. Of course she’d want a glimpse at things.

After this, Lacus is shuffled out of the plot for a good bit as she recuperates at her home with her many, many Haros. So many Haros. It will never cease being funny that Athrun (notedly, the person who gave her the Haros) is also the one who goes ‘how can you live like this?!’.

This is a good opportunity to talk about Lacus and Athrun’s relationship as a whole. Though the two of them never met before being introduced to each other for the engagement, they like each other. Lacus seems dedicated to making this marriage work out. In a bonus audio drama covering their first meeting, Lacus basically steamrolls Athrun with her can-do-attitude regarding the engagement. He is completely taken aback as she speculates about the hair color of their future children… Lacus approaches the engagement on a baseline of ‘I don’t know you that well yet, so I don’t know if this is good or bad - might as well be optimistic.’ It’s only after Athrun’s enduring discomfort that she slows down. This ongoing positive approach to the relationship seems to both be because of her dedication to her father’s cause as well as because she simply comes to like Athrun. She treasures his gifts, is overjoyed when he comes to visit, and would be perfectly willing to take their relationship to an actual romantic level.

Just look at her waiting for a proper kiss before Athrun chickens out and opts for her cheek instead…

But ultimately, Athrun just does not understand Lacus. This is evident in their interactions and confirmed several times by Director Fukuda. Athrun can’t see past Lacus’ one-sided public presentation. Her deeper thoughts and convictions are lost on him. According to the above-linked interviews, it is this specific visit in episode 20 when Lacus tries to test Athrun and then decides to cut her losses.

“I think she was trying to see if Athrun could accept her thoughts. Lacus also feels that way about Kira, so she told Athrun that she likes him. She actually wanted Athrun to inquire about her reasons, but Athrun doesn’t ask. That’s why Lacus can’t make space in her heart for him.” - Fukuda, as linked above.

Not only does Athrun not seem open to meeting her head-on ideologically, he also doesn’t display any jealousy at her stating she is fond of another guy. Both as a comrade and as a romantic partner, Athrun feels distant from Lacus. Of course she remains fond of him as a person, but she won’t keep chasing a connection he is not emotionally open to.

Kira is different in this regard - he is ready to accept and agree with Lacus’ morals, to let her take Flay’s place as the person who inspires him to keep fighting. And that is precisely the next step in Lacus’ journey - forging her bond with Kira.

After Kira and Athrun gravely wound each other in battle, Reverend Malchio picks up the injured Kira and brings him to the PLANTs. It is implied though not elaborated upon that Malchio is part of Siegel Clyne’s large web of contacts trying to stop Patrick Zala’s megalomania. Malchio and Lacus appear to get along well - it stands to reason that Kira was entrusted to her care because Malchio knew he’d saved her before.

Lacus delights in nursing Kira back to health. She shares her love of the outdoors and beautiful gardens with him, and listens to his struggles and regrets. It is here that we get a good glimpse at the way Lacus’ genuine girly side looks. She is playful yet ladylike, she can appear quite innocent… but she never seems at a loss for what’s going on and routinely gets serious when discussing matters of war and trauma.

This Lacus in the garden is the person she would like to be. In her ideal world, there would be peace and she’d be at liberty to simply enjoy her songs and flowers, spending time with a person she likes. Lacus’ gentleness and her appreciation of simple pleasures are not an act.

Unfortunately, that ideal world does not exist. Which is why, when Kira declares he wants to fight not ZAFT nor the Earth Forces but the conflict itself, Lacus sees her own morals echoed in him and decides to act as well.

She abuses her authority and the trust the PLANTs’ society holds in her in order to let Kira steal the Freedom, one of ZAFT’s new super weapons. It is likely that she was aware of the Freedom’s existence through her father - there don’t appear to be any secrets between the two of them.

This is a good point to point out one of Lacus’ most defining habits: her tendency to ask questions. Though she is far from clueless, she is someone who will contribute to a conversation by prompting for elaboration again and again. She knows that asking someone else to spell out their thought process will help them solidify it.

Lacus has a very intuitive understanding of the human mind and how to enable it. She is a good person and mostly uses that strategy in order to gently nudge those who are already morally aligned with her in the right direction… but there certainly is potential to use this kind of strategy for outright manipulation. We will see as much when we get to Destiny… but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Right now, allowing Kira to act has also forced Lacus to do the same - she is now regarded as a traitor to the PLANTs for her theft of military equipment and needs to go into hiding. There is only one last thing she feels she needs to do before she can address the public: tie up loose ends with Athrun.

The staging of this confrontation reveals Lacus’ deep sentimentality. She hides out at the theater she first sang in publicly, a hideout so fitting of her personality that Athrun figures it out with only minimal prodding. Lacus had taken great care of the flowers she received from that theater years ago. I’d say it’s fair to assume that the location has not just been picked for how easily Athrun could find it - after all, Lacus is singing in full stage costume when he finds her. In a way, this is her goodbye performance to her old life that she is now giving up in the name of rebellion.

On this stage of memories, Lacus gives Athrun an ultimatum.

“Did you kill him? What is it that you believe in and fight for? Is it the medal you received? Your father’s orders? If it is, then Kira may once again become your enemy. And so will I. If you’ve declared me an enemy, will you shoot me? Athrun Zala of ZAFT!”

For the first time, she addresses him with a harsh voice and allows him to see the full power of her determination. (Poor guy, he had no idea what he was in for…)

At this point everything has been set in motion and Lacus is fed-up with Athrun’s lukewarm commitment. He is holding her at gunpoint, but the one forcing a decision is Lacus. When Athrun protects her from the ZAFT agents sent to kill her, that proves that Athrun is not acting in blind loyalty to his father - he passes Lacus’ test. Noteworthy is that through this entire exchange, Lacus had gunmen from the Clyne-faction in hiding. If Athrun had actually made a move to hurt her, he would not have left that theater alive. I fully believe that Lacus would have ordered his death if it ensured that he won’t get a second shot at killing Kira - the sword she is pinning all her hopes on. However, she surely had confidence it would not get that far. Her primary intention was to wake Athrun up, not to get rid of him.

With this last personal matter settled, Lacus begins her real work. She has the unique advantage of being an already established ambassador for peace through her idol work (and the association thereof with her father’s politics). This gives her inherent credibility with the populace of the PLANTs - something she is intending to make full use of through guerilla radio broadcasts.

“Coordinators are in no way a different species that evolved from other forms of humans. Even with the reform of marriage regulations, we are unable to build towards our future. How is that an advanced species?”

In her speeches, she takes a stark counterposition to Patrick Zala’s doctrine of Coordinator superiority. Fukuda repeatedly calls Lacus a radical girl - and for her context, she is. After all, she lives in a society legally controlled by eugenics, in which only marriages resulting in childbirth are legally viable. To stand up and publicly declare that the entire premise of the current PLANTs is bullshit… That is bold.

Her rebellion is harshly punished as her father is mercilessly gunned down for association with his daughter - which now leaves Lacus in charge of the whole Clyne faction. Her response to her father’s death is muted. She merely nods in acknowledgement and goes back to organizing her resistance force - the only hint to her true discontent is once again Haro, closing out the scene with an “I won’t accept this!”. We see yet again that Lacus’ public face is always tightly controlled. As a leader she understands that she cannot show weakness or risk hurting the morale of her group.

Through the connections her father established and the loyalty of her own followers, Lacus manages to steal the spaceship Eternal and escape from the PLANTs. Through this, she can reconvene with the Archangel and meet both Kira and Athrun again.

It is here that Lacus allows herself to cry about her father for the very first time. She is a girl who is open with very few people, who does not feel like her position offers her the luxury of being candid with her emotions. It takes being alone with somebody she trusts for her to let go and truly feel.

I am going to be talking about Lacus’ relationship to Kira in more depth when we get to the beginning of Destiny, but for now it will suffice to say that their non-faction-aligned positions make them kindred spirits who rely on each other. They have gotten to know one another fairly well during Kira’s sickbed stay at the Clyne mansion. Kira has met Lacus with an emotional openness that Athrun never showed her, which makes it easier for her to fully respond in kind.

(As an aside, the death of the politician father is a recurring theme in SEED. Lacus once more follows in the footsteps of Flay, as well as Cagalli; with Athrun soon to join them.)

During the battle sequences following the reunion, we see Lacus as a collected and capable commander of her ship. We have already witnessed her incredible calm (not losing her cool when threatened, losing family members, having people shot in front of her,…) and it comes in handy here as well. Notably, Lacus is shown to be a lot more cold and pragmatic than Athrun. Where Athrun is motivated by personal relationships and would risk it all to save their comrades who are lost in the Mendel colony, Lacus immediately declines his plan.

“Even if Kira, Mu and Dearka never return, we must still continue to fight.”

Just like Lacus has accepted the death of her father, she would also accept Kira’s death in the name of a greater cause. As always, her personal feelings take a backseat to being able to fulfill her function and represent her ideology.

“My mother told me something long ago. The world belongs to you and also you belong to the world, as long as you are born and exist in this world.”

This attitude is at least somewhat contextualized by this quote that shows up shortly after. Lacus’ mother is implied to have passed away when she was very young, possibly making this one of Lacus’ core memories of her. “And also you belong to the world,” seems to encompass a lot of Lacus’ attitude towards duty and commitment to peace.

Lacus’ arc in the season closes off with the activation of her SEED mode, as well as the associated speech. I have transcribed it in full here:

“We humans, possibly, could exist without fighting. However, many of us choose to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we must kill to protect our future and ourselves… What sort of future is it? What are we? There is no future for those who have been killed. And what about those who have killed? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with bloodstained hands? Well, is it?”

In The Art and Data of Gundam SEED, this scene is described as follows: “Confronted by so many lives being lost, Lacus’ SEED activates out of grief and sorrow over the endless link between humanity and war.”

However, what I actually want to point out is not what triggers her SEED but how her SEED manifests. Usually SEED mode is shown to enhance piloting skill, but Lacus isn’t a pilot. What she does instead is the one thing she does so well: ask questions. Her power is the unerring dedication to bring into question things that are seen as self-explanatory, to inquire again and again if there truly is good reason for the world to be this way.

It positions her as the perfect antithesis to Rau who views violence as a given and himself as the answer.

In SEED, the series villain is Lacus’ opposite, a clear-cut opposition. It is in Destiny that Lacus really comes under scrutiny with a villain who is far more alike to her in many ways.

But before we can get into discussing Lacus and Durandal, we have to cover the After-Phase Between The Stars short, a five minute special that serves as a bridge between the first and second season, catching us up to what the cast has been up to in the two year time skip.

The set-up for Destiny often comes under scrutiny because fans consider it uncharacteristic for Lacus and Kira to have pulled back from politics rather than take part in managing the peace they helped bring about. I don’t think that is true. Neither Kira nor Lacus wanted to be in a position of authority, nor do they feel like they actually have adequate answers to the complex political problems of the Cosmic Era. During the war they had a clear goal, but the reparations are not nearly as simple.

The two of them are only 16 when the war ends - it’s natural that they would want to back out and leave the rebuilding efforts to qualified adults. For them to move to Orb and live with Malchio so they can heal from the loss they’ve endured is an understandable choice.

And it is not as though Lacus makes this decision out of pure selfishness and thoughtlessness, as After-Phase spells out almost word by word.

Cagalli: “It’s amazing you actually went out onto the battlefield. Doing that suits you well.” Lacus: “Is that right? But even when Kira was crying, he still said he would return. We may still not understand what we should be doing. The world isn’t something that someone creates.”

Lacus is aware that she has amassed a lot of influence over the course of the war, being an idol turned resistance leader whom the people generally rely on. If she were to step up now, people would be sure to place undue importance on her just because of the feelings they project onto their role. That is a power she doesn’t want to use.

Not doing politics at this juncture is her political stance. She feels the world should be shaped by people and not by ideologues making the decisions for them.

Cagalli and Lacus are at different ends of the same problem during Destiny - where Cagalli tries to step up to her position of power and finds the complexities of it quickly overwhelming her, Lacus decides stepping away is what is best for the world and is mistaken in that as well.

Lacus’ decision turns into a major part of Destiny’s conflict - because Lacus is not the only one who sees that her position holds inherent power. Durandal sees it too, and he exploits the vacancy by filling it with his own propaganda version of Lacus. In Meer, Durandal creates the Lacus that Lacus herself doesn’t want to become.

This is where full analysis necessitates a digression to Durandal, who is Lacus’ true counterpart in this season even as Meer takes the role in physical appearance.

Lacus’ mirror being split between Meer (body) and Durandal (mind) is interesting in itself, because it touches on a gendered dimension again. Durandal states that Lacus’ power to influence is greater than his own, but that is not due to who she is as a person. The influence of “Lacus” can only be realized because she is a beautiful young girl. We find ourselves at an intersection of idol culture and propaganda - Lacus as an idol is by-design a ‘pure’ celebrity, someone you can look up to without concerns because they are wholly innocent. That is how idols are produced in the real world as well. Through stepping out of the ‘idol’ space and becoming a resistance leader against an inarguable evil, Lacus has then attained an almost goddess-like reputation. The trust inspired by superficial elements like her beauty and soft voice are conflated with her achievements at the end of the war. She is venerated as the icon of peace, rather than seen as an individual with the capacity for flaws. “Lacus” is a near-abstract concept to the public.

That’s what makes it so easy to abuse - so long as you have another beautiful young girl at the ready who is willing to play into the idea of “Lacus, the beautiful savior”. And boy, does Meer play into it. She takes Lacus’ distanced image and turns it on its head. By delivering fanservice like no tomorrow she plays further into the idea of Lacus as a consumable savior who exists for the sake of the audience, whipping the crowd into a frenzy. A large part of Lacus’ influence is thus divorced from who either she or Meer is as an individual.

However, Meer doesn’t write her own speeches. Durandal controls everything she says. Where Meer mirrors the way Lacus is seen (and not seen) by the public, Durandal is the one we truly need to examine here.

First things first. Durandal is absolutely intended as a Lacus parallel. This is conveyed at a number of points through the season, but the first overt comparison is made when Durandal giving Athrun the Saviour is written and shot in an almost 1:1 recreation of the scene in which Lacus gives Kira the Freedom.

Lacus: “I feel that the strength you’ll need is in this machine.” Durandal: “Should we end up in that situation, I want you to be someone with power.”

Lacus: “Will this take you where you wish to go? Will it help you when you get there?” Durandal: “But what you can do and what you wish to do… These are things that nobody knows better than yourself.”

Even Lacus’ “I am Lacus Clyne, you are Kira Yamato” is echoed in the way Durandal insists on Athrun’s inherent self and nature. The idea of an inherent self, a core of a person, is something that unites Lacus and Durandal. They just take it in very different directions - Lacus’ point of view is a more standard “be true to yourself so you can love yourself and find your true purpose”, while Durandal takes it a big step further and comes out on the other end with “have someone decode exactly What You Are and then adhere to it for the rest of your life instead of ever questioning. This will make you happy”.

Durandal is Lacus taken to the extreme. Every soft line of wishing for a world in which the cycle of war is forever broken is turned into a masterplan and a doctrine.

Further, Durandal and Lacus’ strategies of dealing with people are similar, to the point where we have Athrun explicitly picking up on it. The Lacus-giving-Kira-the-Freedom vs Durandal-giving-Athrun-the-Saviour sequences are completed later in the season when Lacus gives Athrun the Justice. We’ll address this scene ahead of time here because it is more important for establishing the Lacus-Durandal dichotomy than it is for Lacus’ personal growth.

Athrun: “Are you trying to tell me I’m nothing but a soldier?” Lacus: “That too is something for you to decide. Power is nothing more than power. And perhaps you are a soldier, but over and above that… You’re Athrun. That’s all there is to it.”

This exchange a) follows Athrun’s realization that Durandal thinks of him as someone who is destined 0nly to be a soldier and b) is accompanied by Athrun directly flashbacking to his conversation with Durandal, comparing that with what Lacus is saying.

Both of them are in the process of prompting him to pilot a mobile suit they already had manufactured for him. Both of them employ a similar rhetoric of making a plea to his intrinsic self and allowing him a choice. Both of them are successful at making him get into the robot.

Lacus and Durandal differ primarily in two core aspects. For one, Durandal prioritizes the role over the individual. I.e.: ‘Athrun is Athrun and because he is Athrun, he can only ever be a soldier’. For Lacus, the inescapable self is the core of your personality, but what you do with it is up to you. I.e.: ‘Athrun is Athrun and thus he has to make the choice that goes best with his true heart’.

The second difference is how genuine they are. Both Lacus and Durandal understand how to manipulate people, but only Durandal abuses this manipulation constantly and with great intentionality. Lacus generally tries to hold back and only encourage instead of exert control. Durandal will lie, Lacus less so.

But in the end both of them remain as people dedicated to their ideal of peace, who employ a soft surface personality in order to make others let their guard down.

Destiny is a season about deconstructing Lacus The Idol. Durandal zeroes in on Lacus not simply because of who she is but because of the ideals she’s grown to represent, the thing she was marketed as from the start, everything that was projected onto her. Lacus The Idol is a construct, an ideal, a wish. Durandal is trying to turn his interpretation of that wish into reality. Lacus The Person is nothing but a roadblock to him.

Though Lacus does not have as many scenes in Destiny as she does in SEED, she is even more crucial to the framework of the story this time. This also means that what few scenes she does get tend to really matter for fleshing out her character.

Her journey begins when Durandal’s failed assassination attempt causes Kira to once again become a Gundam pilot. Lacus is incredibly hesitant about this, but Kira reassures her that he’s fine and doing this out of his own will.

And with that it is finally time to dive into Lacus and Kira’s relationship properly.

Let’s preface this with a Fukuda quote from The Art and Data of Gundam SEED: “Their hearts are connected, but they aren’t like lovers. In a sense, they’ve skipped over that step and become something more like family. Kira is afraid of losing Lacus, because of his trauma with Flay. And Lacus feels guilty for making Kira do something he didn’t want to do, so she feels indebted to him. Psychologically speaking, the two of them are in a rather precarious codependent relationship.”

If the dynamic between Lacus and Kira reads as awkward, it’s because it should. In the beginning of Destiny, Kira is portrayed as traumatized by his encounter with Rau, which he has several flashbacks to. Lacus is the one accompanying him through his recovery, but she is also extremely aware that she is the one who gave him the weapon to fight Rau, that she is the one who is responsible for Kira entering the war again.

Lacus needs Kira to fight and enables Kira to fight, but she knows this is a horrible thing to do to somebody. And she can’t apologize for it, because if necessary she would do it to him again. That is the kind of pragmatist she is. Her feelings towards Kira remain as “I am fully aware that I intentionally put you in this situation, both materially and emotionally, and I know that I can never make it up to you”. How deeply and sincerely sorry she nevertheless is ties her to Kira more than anything else in the world. She cannot make it up to him, but she will spend a lifetime trying. Her feelings of guilt are on full display several times throughout Destiny.

Kira meanwhile projects Flay onto Lacus. His failure to protect Flay translates into an obsessive need to protect Lacus instead. Flay shapes every aspect of how Kira interacts with Lacus, how he can interact with Lacus. No doubt the topic of sexuality is also deeply tainted by his highly charged experiences with Flay.

Lacus does have some romantic feelings for Kira, seen in her blush when she kisses his cheek after giving him the Freedom or in the way she cares about his opinion when she is trying on a variety of outfits during Destiny. But she also seems respectful of the fact that Kira cannot truly reciprocate. (He also absolutely fails at having any opinions about Lacus in different clothes - it is bittersweet to see that short attempt at acting like a proper couple fail so miserably.)

The most romantic affection we see between the two of them are kisses on the cheek and I think it’s fairly safe to say that that is all there ever is.

Lacus and Kira cling to one another, silently asking for a forgiveness they can never be granted. They are nominally a couple, but the reality is simply that much more complex. They are family, they help each other heal, they make each other sad, and they absolutely cannot be apart.

The ghost of Flay hangs over them both in-character and narratively. Lacus has become the reluctant wielder of the sword that is Kira Yamato, the sword Flay helped forge. In turn, Lacus assumes Flay’s position in Kira’s mind; as the driving force, the one giving him direction, the woman to be protected.

Returning to the plot of Destiny, Lacus is now on the run with the Archangel, forced to watch as Meer assumes her identity. Fans generally seem to think she doesn't mind this, but that’s not really true. Lacus is just never vocal about her feelings.

Rie Tanaka’s line read in this scene of everyone watching Meer’s concert is absolutely superb - Lacus sounds deeply sarcastic. The Art and Data of Gundam SEED just confirms this when describing Lacus as “with a smile on her face, but daggers in her eyes.”

Lacus is deeply bothered by what is being done in her name and to her image, but currently neither has the means nor the strategy to combat it. She’s in hiding because she is under active threat of assassination and also because they just don’t really know what is going on.

The latter is of particular importance, because Lacus’ MO remains as it always was: she wants to know as much as she can about a conflict before acting. This principle is actually spelled out in her bath scene with Cagalli.

“First… decide. And then do it. It’s the only way to achieve anything.”

What seems simple nevertheless delivers a good glimpse into her interiority, especially thanks to the inclusion of a flashback to her father’s death. “Guilt” is a core theme for Lacus this season. Destiny presents a Lacus who is fully aware of the tragic consequences of her actions, a Lacus who carries that sadness permanently.

“It’s the only way to achieve anything,” is what she says, but she also means: “If you allow yourself regret, if you allow yourself to contemplate all the different paths you could have taken, you will surely be crushed by it.”

Lacus' philosophy is founded on standing firm in her decisions. She cannot allow herself to be immobilized by regret.

And that is another part of why Lacus takes so long to act. She observes situations very carefully until she is completely certain of the route she wants to take - of the route that will leave her with the least regrets.

Her unwillingness to act unless certain is Lacus' greatest strength and greatest weakness in one.

Thus Lacus soon admits that she does not know the best course of action. She then decides to act on her principles and go look at the situation on the PLANTs for herself. It’s a mirror of the viewing deck scene Lacus and Kira share at the very beginning of SEED. That encounter ended with Kira smuggling Lacus out of the ship, this one ends with her leaving by her own choice.

Though Kira worries about Lacus, she calms him down by quoting back his own reassurance when he first stepped back into the Gundam. This puts a nice emphasis on the mutuality of their relationship. Just as Lacus understands that Kira does not wish to be a pilot, Kira understands that Lacus longs to live a regular life far away from political importance. They both want nothing more for each other than a peaceful situation in which they can escape that which burdens them.

Lacus’ plan for going back into space is to impersonate Meer and steal her shuttle, a nice bit of vindictiveness on her part. There is a fun little audio drama in which she pretends to be worried people appreciate Meer more than her, tricking Waldfelt into helping her learn Meer’s dance routine. In truth, that was preparation for this exact plan. It goes to demonstrate that Lacus not showing her full cards and instead acting out the carefree girl she would like to be is a constant habit for her.

Thus Lacus sets out for the PLANTs, investigates Mendel colony, and finds out that Durandal is on the fast lane to upgrading society to Eugenics+. Interesting here is the revelation that Lacus has kept the Eternal in hiding this entire time and maintained a crew. Though she was hoping that the world would straighten itself out, she clearly never ever abandoned her backup plans for the worst case scenario. She is cautious in every sense of the word.

Meanwhile Durandal is rapidly trying to unify all of mankind under his leadership, attacking the independent Orb under pretenses of only desiring to root out Logos. So Lacus decides she has seen and heard enough. She needs to reveal herself before it is too late.

“I ask the world, please do not get caught up in the trap of his words, telling you that no one else is at fault. We must gain a deeper understanding of Chairman Durandal’s true objective.”

Even though Logos is undoubtedly a powerful evil within the Destiny universe, Lacus calls out the faults of conspiracy thinking and encourages people to question the motives of anyone who offers a solution that is too easy and too clean. It’s Destiny’s clumsy attempt of exploring the thin line between calling out harmful power structures vs simplifying reality in order to create a unified enemy.

It is also interesting because Lacus’ plea for everyone to think for themselves and question the absolutes presented to them is at odds with what a large portion of the public wants from her. They would like for Lacus The Idol to guide them - which is exactly why Meer was so effective as a propaganda stunt. The nature of Lacus’ social power is by default opposed to the change she actually wants to effect in the world.

This then brings us straight to Lacus’ actual confrontation with Meer.

Meer lays a trap relying on Lacus’ goodness and dedication to helping those in need. Ignoring the trap would prove Lacus a hypocrite, but Lacus is not the type anyway. She walks into the trap with open eyes - and offers Meer a sincere chance to be saved.

That’s the thing about Lacus and Meer: Lacus hates that the identity theft is happening, but she does not consider Meer to be the main perpetrator. Rather, Meer is also a victim. Lacus’ speech to her demonstrates this well and also says a lot about Lacus, so I’ll be copying it down in full:

”If it’s my name you want, you may have it. And my appearance. You and I will still be different people. That will never change. None of us can be anything other than ourselves. But that’s why you and I exist and stand here before each other, right? That’s why we have encounters, right? With one another and also ourselves. Your dreams belong to you. So please sing your dreams for your own sake. You mustn’t let others use your dreams for their benefit.”

Lacus looks at Meer and she feels sad as well as responsible. Meer was coerced to throw her own life away in the name of Lacus The Idol. Lacus feels that what happened to Meer could only happen because she exists. She sees a girl trying to become a version of her that Lacus herself feels is a burden, and she can’t help but be sad for the consequences of her existence.

I said before that “guilt” is a big theme for Lacus in Destiny, and here it appears in its more misguided form, taking more onto her shoulders than is actually warranted. One might argue it is a form of arrogance in its own way.

However, Meer and Lacus never get to resolve this. Meer steals Lacus’ place one final time, taking a bullet meant for her and dying in her stead. The sense of guilt is thus solidified and will remain with Lacus for the rest of her life.

Lacus’ tears for Meer are the most intense expression of grief we see from Lacus in the whole series and I think it is fitting.

Meer was a girl who spent much of her life wondering about Lacus, wishing she could know about the elusive stranger behind the idol. Now Meer is the one who is an eternal stranger and Lacus is left wishing she could hold onto more of her than just the diary and the idol work she left behind.

To Lacus, Meer is a girl who destroyed herself out of admiration for her. A girl who was consumed because Lacus’ inaction let it happen. Lacus’ philosophy might be largely pacifist, but it is not and has not ever been victimless.

And that is what really makes Lacus’ character to me: this awareness that even her best bet at a ‘correct’ decision is not the bloodless path, cannot be the bloodless path. Adhering to her morals still costs lives and Lacus tries to confront that dilemma, carrying her grief close to her heart.

Lacus’ speech to Meer conveys what Lacus thinks of life, touching both on her core similarity to Durandal (the idea of a ‘true self’) as well as the most major difference: Lacus believes striving for dreams to be the inherent value of human existence, even if it causes pain. Just as her decisions are worth making, even if they result in loss.

“All lives are meant to fight for a desired future,” is the bottom line Lacus arrived at by the end of Destiny. The right to struggle towards your dreams is worth fighting for, the contradiction of mankind is lamentable but ultimately to be protected.

And after the war ends, Lacus has internalized the responsibility she feels for what Durandal wrought. Though she does not want to hold political power, though she wishes she could simply play in her garden for the rest of her life, she realizes now that even her absence can be instrumentalized for harm. By the end of Destiny, Lacus has been locked into her very own bad ending, the exact thing she tried to avoid.

She closes the season where Cagalli begins it, stepping up to the inherent responsibility of having power. It is an intriguing place to leave her. It will require her to step out of the idol image that she has acquired, and to make decisions before she is ready to make them. Both the public and Lacus herself will have to reckon with Lacus’ fallible nature as an individual. The ethereal image of Lacus as the beacon of morality might well be crushed under the weight of Chairwoman Clyne.

Lacus is a reluctant mastermind. A girl with great talent for affecting others, always wishing for a world in which she does not have to use that talent.

Now she is following in the footsteps of a man who was a manifest representation of what a well-intentioned villain she herself could easily become - and she can only hope she’ll make decisions that she can stand by, just as she always has.

buying my dad a birthday present and having my annual "I don't have a family anymore" breakdown :)

I actually think it would have been easier if my parents had separated when I was a kid. As an adult I have no footing to figure out how to be their kid anymore. It feels like we lived together under one roof for decades and are now complete strangers.

First my brother. dealing with his legitimate issues, pushed us all away, and now he only talks to my mom.

My mom separated from my dad also for legitimate reasons and is now living with her boyfriend.

My dad's pushed everyone who loves him away, which he thinks is because they can't handle his political views, but actually it's because he called them all stupid and idiotic to their faces. Multiple times.

Mental illness abounds. My dad won't see a therapist, he'll only see a family friend who believes some pretty hokey stuff about the mind and 'vibrations' etc. But I look at it as at least he's talking to someone. I may not understand her beliefs, but I do know her as a kind person, and if my dad feels comfortable confiding in her then the rest isn't my business. My dad has told me he thinks he has ADHD, depression, he blames it all on his own family life growing up, he recognizes his mistakes - but also he can't stop himself calling people stupid. He really tries when he talks to me though. I do think it's dementia or undiagnosed mental illness because at this point he spouts angry politics like a tic, anything triggers it, any alternative point of view or simple fact check is an attack, and he has to work really hard to rein himself in. But again, he does try with me.

My mom seems really happy and her boyfriend seems nice. I don't dislike him at all. But I feel like I understand the step kid reservations about the "replacement dad." I never did growing up. I just chalked it up to "feeling sad" but it's more than that, it's a future you thought you'd have with one person, instead of disappearing when that person does, continuing with an entirely different person. It's not bad of course. It's mostly good. But it's beyond sad at the same time. Someone was supposed to be there who isn't, even though they're still alive. Someone else is there instead.

Brother seems to be doing much better too. I'm not sure of the details but it sounds like he either officially has some sort of autism diagnosis, or has gathered enough evidence to self-diagnose. It sounds like he's made some supportive friends at his new job and is figuring things out, so that's great.

My dad is the hardest because I don't hear much good news from hi. I don't hear bad news either. I want to hear that he isn't alone all of the time. But realistically I think he's got to have trouble making new friends and being part of a community. He never had trouble doing that before, but his habit of complaining and talking politics constantly gets in the way now. When we talk he usually seems okay, right until he starts talking about our family and how things used to be, and then he starts to cry. So I really struggle through calls with him. Gotta do one today or tomorrow because it's his birthday and I'm so upset just thinking about it.

It's now been four years since my parents separated so you'd think stuff like that would be getting easier. I don't think it is for my dad. And for me, I just keep feeling like my mom's off living her life, my brother's off living his somewhere else, and my dad's living his in another somewhere else, and there's no longer any reason for all of us to be together again. I barely know them anymore.

Ironically I was the one who left first. Not that my staying would have changed anything, though. I just avoided home during what college breaks I could because of my brother's outbursts. I tried to get away. I was lucky that I was following my dreams. Since things started falling apart, I went to college, moved to Japan, got a job, met my boyfriend, and have just been living mostly happily. Idk why all the trouble happened around me instead of to me. I am grateful for it, but it also makes me feel like even more of an outsider.

Even when I was a kid, I didn't have the complaints that my brother did about our family or school or whatever. That doesn't mean his complaints aren't valid. It's a bit complicated but there's plenty of stuff that was messed up. Some of it affected only him. But what did affect me I guess just didn't bother me in the same way. I always felt like anything I didn't like would go away some day so I didn't worry about it. That's why I describe myself as an optimist even though I don't think that's people's impression of me when they meet me haha. But I have a weird optimism that just assumes any bad situation is going to work out. Right now my big fears are mostly about my dad being alone in his old age. I'm still thinking about what I should do. I don't have any money and I don't have a house. Even my apartment is a shoe box. I also live in a different country which my dad wouldn't like (just because he's very much a creature of habit and has never enjoyed things being different - food especially). I'm not in a situation where it's easy, or even possible, to just say come live with me. I'd probably have to leave Japan and go home. Which is something I always knew was possible when my parents got old. But I figured if that happened, I would have both parents living with me, not just one.

It could be good though. I just don't know how I'd do it. If I had to move home, I have no idea what that would mean for my boyfriend, who has never expressed an interest in even visiting the US, let alone living there. Having ties in different places feels like being made to decide who you love more.

OK so I just wished to express this because I don't do it very often but feel the need to right now, even though it's actually hard to do so and put into words so I'll do my best, hopefully without sounding too disgustingly fan girly...

Basically Sam Fender is someone who despite being from a whole different part of England to me, is someone who as a person alongside his music, I could not relate to anymore to than I already do.

I have had the privilege of being able to express my adoration a little and was shocked when he responded to me over Instagram last year, but man I don't think he would even know the half of it if I could actually tell him all of it in person.

I just know I would find it difficult, I would stutter because of nerves and he would probably find it too overwhelming and somehow I would probably make him feel uncomfortable because I am good at that, and I think there's a reason I haven't met my absolute favourite actors/musicians for this very reason 🤣🤣 but yeah I would struggle for probably an hour or two before I would eventually calm down and be able to chat to him like an actual fucking normal person!

So instead I am letting it out to this tumblr void and letting it be here for just my thoughts and for anyone who might be slightly interested.

Sam Fender is like a mind reader. Like he really feels like he knows my life for real. I mean similarities are definitely there where my parents struggled financially when I was a child. I had an estranged relationship with my dad for years despite choosing to live with him when I was 10. My mum walked out on us and I was broken for years. I got bullied at school for years as well and although it's called "Dead Boys", I was nearly a Dead Girl that couldn't be explained, except I just wanted to die at 17.

Seventeen Going Under was really the hitting point for me. I really was 17 and going under in life. I was a mess. And then Spit of You made me bawl my eyes out when I first heard it because those lyrics alongside the music video was just pure dynamite for me, like everything that I wish I could express, but he has done it better than me.

I've considered the music route and have been told I am a good singer and a good writer, but damn, did I struggle to keep myself motivated to teach myself guitar. I did ok but then kind of gave up on it because I didn't think I could get very far.. I was watching my dad have mental breakdowns almost everyday which clouded my motivations. I still consider sometimes whether I try and pick it up again and play at an open mic night. One day I might. The closest I have come as of late so far is on karaoke nights working at the pub and only then do I sing my heart out besides at home 😄

His political views are a part of it too. Our political system is fucked and he expresses that brilliantly too with Long Way Off and Aye. I mean Hypersonic Missiles and White Privilege as well but they're more worldwide explanations. The left (Labour) and right (Conservatives) don't appeal to me either way. We need a whole revamp.

Basically this fella from North Shields is like a gift to me and to many others. I just wish he could know this without me sounding like a creepy fucker. He's just awesome in general really and I guarantee that if I wasn’t so awkward with celebrities and could actually keep my cool when I usually can, I would happily have a good old chinwag with him, just talk about life and have a few bevvies.

I mean hell, the actual dream would be to duet a song with him ❤ he would play guitar and I would sing. It's not expected though and seems like such a long shot to ever actually happen, and while I saw him perform at Ally Pally in London in November 2021, I did not get lucky in catching him after the gig. Maybe one day I will but then he would probably be super famous by then. He definitely deserves all the attention anyway!

So yeah. That was what I was thinking about this morning of all things 😅

I got a brand new roof about a year ago now on this 100 year old home of ours.  My mother used to say it was the hottest house in the summer and the coldest house in the winter, and if the termites stop holding hands, it would collapse!  Imagine my shock when every time it rained hard it looked like the Rainforest Cafe in what we call our Blue Room.  The stress of having multiple visits from different crews never helped.  It was a flat roof section and it defied logic that it should leak at all with everything so sealed up!  On the 6th visit, four gentlemen who did not speak a word of English, did their best to tell me it was the windows about 3 feet above the roof that were leaking. Talk about stress.  It made zero sense, which was what I told the main man when we spoke, but I took his advice anyway. Fast forward to Tropical Storm warnings and gale force winds this past week and voila - no leaks! Stress is like that in a way, it's always the last cause or origin that you're not seeing.  Do your best to become less stressed. Try Tai Chii, Qi Gong, yoga, pilates, gardening, pickleball, hug a tree, walk barefoot in the sand... whatever twirls your curl, but make the effort to find some peace and grounding any chance you get.  Join us this TUESDAY at 4pm EST for our Live Zoom clearing event with the theme of releasing and removing stress, tension and anxiety and submit YOUR top 3 wishes for you, someone you love and for the world!

TGIWednesday: Stress up on the roof

TGIWednesday News

I got a brand new roof about a year ago now on this 100 year old home of ours.  My mother used to say it was the hottest house in the summer and the coldest house in the winter, and if the termites stop holding hands, it would collapse!  Imagine my shock when every time it rained hard it looked like the Rainforest Cafe in what we call our Blue Room.  The stress of having multiple visits from different crews never helped.  It was a flat roof section and it defied logic that it should leak at all with everything so sealed up!  On the 6th visit, four gentlemen who did not speak a word of English, did their best to tell me it was the windows about 3 feet above the roof that were leaking. Talk about stress.  It made zero sense, which was what I told the main man when we spoke, but I took his advice anyway. Fast forward to Tropical Storm warnings and gale force winds this past week and voila - no leaks! Stress is like that in a way, it's always the last cause or origin that you're not seeing.  Do your best to become less stressed. Try Tai Chii, Qi Gong, yoga, pilates, gardening, pickleball, hug a tree, walk barefoot in the sand... whatever twirls your curl, but make the effort to find some peace and grounding any chance you get.  Join us this TUESDAY at 4pm EST for our Live Zoom clearing event with the theme of releasing and removing stress, tension and anxiety and submit YOUR top 3 wishes for you, someone you love and for the world!

To put the matter as simply as possible: Eight years of bitter experience have taught us that supporting Trump degrades the character of his core supporters. There are still millions of reluctant Trump voters, people who’ve retained their kindness, integrity and good sense even as they cast a ballot for the past and almost certainly future G.O.P. nominee. I have friends and family members who vote for Trump, and I love them dearly. But the most enduring legacy of a second Trump term could well be the conviction on the part of millions of Americans that Trumpism isn’t just a temporary political expediency, but the model for Republican political success and — still worse — the way that God wants Christian believers to practice politics. Already we can see the changes in individual character. In December, I wrote about the moral devolution of Rudy Giuliani and of the other MAGA men and women who have populated the highest echelons of the Trump movement. But what worries me even more is the change I see in ordinary Americans. I live in the heart of MAGA country, and Donald Trump is the single most culturally influential person here. It’s not close. He’s far more influential than any pastor, politician, coach or celebrity. He has changed people politically and also personally. It is common for those outside the Trump movement to describe their aunts or uncles or parents or grandparents as “lost.” They mean their relatives’ lives are utterly dominated by Trump, Trump’s media and Trump’s grievances. You can go to social gatherings here in the South and hear people whisper to friends, “Don’t talk about politics in front of Dad. He’s out of control.” I know that rage and conspiracies aren’t unique to the right. During my litigation career, I frequently faced off against the worst excesses of the radical left. But never before have I seen extremism penetrate a vast American community so deeply, so completely and so comprehensively. This isn’t just a subjective sensation. Polling data again and again backs up the reality that the right is abandoning decency, and doing so in the most alarming of ways. It began happening almost immediately with white evangelicals. In 2011, they were the American cohort least likely to agree that a politician could commit immoral acts in private yet “still behave ethically and fulfill their duties in their public and professional life.” Yet in October 2016 — even before Trump’s upset victory over Hillary Clinton — white evangelicals had already changed their minds. They went from least likely to most likely to excuse the immoral behavior of politicians. But that’s not the only change among Republicans. An increasing percentage are now tempted to embrace political violence. Last October, a startling 33 percent of Republicans (and an even larger 41 percent of pro-Trump Americans) agreed with the statement that “because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country.” That percentage is far higher than the (still troubling) 22 percent of independents and 13 percent of Democrats who shared the same view. As the Iowa caucuses approached, Trump escalated his language, going so far as to call his political opponents “vermin” and declaring that immigrants entering America illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country.” The statement was so indefensible and repugnant that many expected it to hurt Trump. Yet a Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll found that a 42 percent plurality of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers said the statement would make them more likely to support Trump — a substantially greater percentage than the 28 percent who said it would make them less likely to support him. While political violence is hardly exclusive to the right, the hostility and vitriol embedded in MAGA America is resulting in an escalating wave of threats and acts of intimidation.

My colleague Jane Coaston even coined a term, “vice signaling,” to describe how Trump’s core supporters convey their tribal allegiance. They’re often deliberately rude, transgressive or otherwise unpleasant, just to demonstrate how little they care about conventional moral norms. For most of my life, conservative evangelicals (including me) have been fond of quoting John Adams’s 1798 letter to the Massachusetts Militia. It’s a critical founding document, one that forcefully argues that our Republic needs a virtuous citizenry to survive. “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People,” he asserts. “It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” I’ve long appreciated that quote, and not because I believe that one must be religious to be moral or that religiosity invariably leads to morality. That’s obviously untrue. Rather, I’ve appreciated that quote because it recognizes the obligations of a free people in a constitutional republic to exercise their liberty toward virtuous purposes. Absent public virtue, a republic can fall. And a Trump win in 2024 would absolutely convince countless Americans that virtue is for suckers, and vice is the key to victory. If Trump loses a second time, there is a chance he’ll end up a painful aberration in American politics, a depressing footnote in our national story. But if he wins again, the equation will change and history may record that he was not the culmination of a short-lived reactionary moment, but rather the harbinger of a greater darkness to come.

Othering

The Original Sin of Humanity!

I am a "grocers" son, and I learned from my dad the lesson of not practicing "othering".

He ran a grocery business and Dad told me from the very beginning that we did not talk about religion, race, and political views in the business or outside on the street.  He said: "All who come through our doors are equal and deserve the same service."  At his funeral were people of all races, economic status,  and religions. He did not practice "othering".

The word "othering" is a trendy term in academic circles, an updated version of words such as prejudice, discrimination, difference, bias and scapegoating.

Othering defines and secures one's identity by distancing and stigmatizing another. Its purpose is to reinforce notions of our own "normality" and to set up a difference of an "other" as a point of deviance. It is a process of being 'other-ed", meaning marginalized, dis empowered, and excluded socially.

Othering is very visible in our nation in all of our divisions.  We see it now in the political ads. The "haves' and the "have nots", all racial discrimination and so on.

In San Francisco it is seen as bright as the sun in the treatment of homeless, poor, people of color; especially in the Mayor' s statement on the drug use in the Tenderloin: "It is time we throw out compassion and use force to solve the problem," not looking at the causes around drug use, and compassionately working in that realm.

In the Haight my young adults are simply and completely ignored. Personally I  experience "othering" day in and day out.

We begin "Pride Month" the first of June, raising up the LGBTQ and Questioning community. I will wear a LGBTQ tee shirt each day to remind others of our "othering".

So what can we do to bring us into a circle of differences, caring for each other, and working out all of the problems, from climate change to extreme poverty?

A prayer by Justin McRoberts  says the best way of action of all:

"May I have the strange courage

to embrace a world

I know will hurt me,

offering myself to people

I know will let me down

and giving the best of my energies

to plans that will not work out.

I want to choose

to love the world as it is,

just as I know I am loved as I am.

The thirteenth Annual INTERNATIONAL COURSE in INDIA “Gandhian Nonviolence: Theory & Application” COST: Tuition, Room & Board FREE (though donations are accepted); all other expenses regarding travel to & from India, visas, healthcare, & other spending is the responsibility each course participant. To better understand the application of Gandhian nonviolence theory to practice, December and January will include course field trips involving 5-10 days each at a Nephropathy Center, an Organic Farm, the Institute of Total Revolution at Vedchi, the Gandhi Research Foundation at Jalgoan, and other experiential learning travel opportunities. It's performance art on a truly epic scale. But for a few moments, maybe a few days, all but the die-hards are NOT thinking about infighting, or secession. They're watching. And this provides a common ground for everyone, going into the new reign.

And because of Elizabeth II's reputation, it's important to get as much out of this last memory to make the important points– loyalty, duty, tradition, history, service, love– stick into the commoner's heads until Charles III has cemented things– or at least, had a chance to mourn, process, and prepare. 

It is, simply put, the political and emotional equivalent of Shock and Awe. 

The Structure

The structure of the funeral could be described as a down-pitched pyramid. 

One could describe each point as being more exclusive than the last, but in another way, she is becoming more and more human with each point – providing catharsis for each element. 

Lying in State (and "The Queue")

One thing that was pointed out to me by my father, who was watching as well, was the Queen's piper in the committal ceremony (8:52:25 in the BBC stream). Just before this point, we have the Garter King at Arms read out her styles: "Thus it hath pleased Almighty God to take out of this transitory life unto His Divine Mercy the late Most High, Most Mighty, and Most Excellent Monarch, Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, and Sovereign of the Most Noble Order of the Garter" as the casket is being lowered, via elevator, into the Royal Vault. 

We, the viewers watching from outside by our TV or rewatching via YouTube, WILL NOT SEE the casket disappear from view.

Instead, the BBC stream cuts to the piper. He's facing the camera. He turns around. Stately, regally. He walks down the aisle, out the door, turns left and leaves the building into the light. Then, while the song still echoes through the building, but while the piper is no longer visible? That's when we come back.

And we do not see the casket anymore. Instead, they're transitioning focus to the new monarch. 

This, Dad thinks, might be evoking the soul leaving to God, work finally done.

Now, we all have probably heard about the piper playing for her every morning, but… I think he's got a point. It's not just the piper playing her out. I'd say that it also is the representation of her final removal from public life. The piper represents her. Her song still echoes, but for us out here? She's gone from view. Finally, utterly, even down to the box around her. She has gone where the media cannot follow. She's shed every eye watching her, but her family and her church. She's gone to the light. She is free.

(In that sense, the sudden shift to the blessing of Charles III is not jarring in the least. Elizabeth has left the building: So now. Look. Look to her son. It's his turn now.)

It's catharsis in a way– a visual representation of her leaving the world stage. I would BET this was planned specifically by her. Goodness knows, the piper shares so many of the features of her outward presentation to the world! Stoicism while feeling; history; steel hidden in silk; slow, dignified movement, and a beautiful sound for those who listen… all while standing alone.

This was definitely meant as a message to the world, as it is an image that could only be conveyed by cameras. 

But there's one last catharsis to get out of the way, because those who are there CANNOT see the piper, only hear him. They need another way to close this chapter. In that respect, the reprise of her version of the national anthem is truly very fitting.

So, I work as a library clerk and spend a lot of time shelving books. Lately, it's gone from a peaceful repetitive task to one that allows me too much time alone with my thoughts. Today, I frequently thought about chr!stianity and it's relationship to my mom's increasingly conservative political views.

Recently, we had a conversation on the phone where she asked me if LGBTQ+ subjects should be taught to children in school. I explained to her that if I had had any clue that I was trans, I would've sooner been able to put a name to the feelings that made me depressed and suicidal for most of my life. She seemed to hear me and take my view seriously, to a degree. I didn't ask her if she agreed with me. I'm afraid what she'll say.

I did ask her why she wanted to know. Apparently there was a "knee-jerk reaction" from her sources to the idea of teaching about LGBT stuff in schools, and she wanted to know my viewpoint. I had hoped for a "you're right, honey, I believe you" but what she said was, "I don't think either side is right" and it doesn't sit well with me.

I'm becoming quite tired of my parent's inconsistency. I feel like I've never had a stable place to exist, in spite of the fact that they housed me and fed me and, I believe, did their best to raise me. They are both so broken by the systems they grew up in, but I'm tired of using that as an excuse. I would like to be content with the fact that I have the power to break that cycle. In spite of their example, I became more compassionate, with the strength to withstand the pressure of social expectations. I will not be having children to transfer my trauma to. I see the world as it is, and I am more conscious of the harm I cause.

My parents have been calling me by the correct name and pronouns for years. It took them some time to fully accept me. Taking testosterone seemed to be the turning point, which I think is unfortunate. A lot of people didn't take me seriously until I got HRT. It's sad that trans people have to do that. I was dismissed constantly prior to making these changes. Someone I once considered a good friend actually said to me that he wasn't comfortable referring to me as a man until I started looking like one.

I'm really fucking sick of being trans sometimes. Or rather, I'm sick of cis society. I'm sick of thinking about it. I don't care that I'm trans. I cherish the moments of peace where I can exist without awareness of my transness. I'm just a person. I don't know why I am the way I am, only that I put every last effort I could muster into being a woman and it just wasn't working out.

I'm also really fucking sick of being tragedy porn for cis people. I'm not "brave" -- I was never given a fucking choice. It was fight or die. I wasn't "born in the wrong body." I was born in my body, and I take a medication to make my body feel a little more normal. Being trans isn't a disability, deformity, or form of mental illness -- but is it any different when someone takes antidepressants to exist easier in their own head? Chr!stians love to say everyone has a cross to bear. This is just mine, I guess.

My mom was confused and dismissive when I first came out to her as genderqueer. She shut me down and made me feel like I was being hysterical. I have often called her my best friend, and we certainly have trauma bonded over surviving my dad. I used to let her define my reality.

I don't know when the turning point was. But there came a point when she took me seriously, and she called me by the right name and pronouns before I got on HRT. I think it came from a place of sincerity. We were close for so much of my life. We used to smoke weed together and hang out all the time. Then her disillusionment with the medical industry took her down the rabbit hole into Q An0n land and before I knew it she was donating money to the Tr/ump campaign.

It used to be kinda quirky when she talked about how the reptilians were feeding on our "loosh" (negative emotions), but now she fully believes the world is run by satanists and considers herself to be a right-wing conservative chr!stian. She's also a nudist, which I only mention because it doesn't seem very conservative to me??

The thing that worries me now is that she's becoming so deeply indoctrinated by it that she'll start to see me as some kind of misguided sinner. There's still a part of me that wants to believe she has more sense than that, but. lol Like, does she think that my "liberal" upbringing made me trans? In that same conversation about LGBT education, she asked me if I wanted to be a man because I was always imitating my dad. And I was pretty confused. When have I ever wanted to be like my dad? I told her I was always looking to her for an example, and wanted to be like her. And in spite of that, I felt that I was a man.

I hate that I have to talk about this. I wish I could put my thoughts together in a coherent way, and make some kind of point. But I don't know if I can change anyone's mind.

It doesn't matter how other people see me. I'm stealth at work. I probably don't have to be, but I just don't know how people would react, and I've already had some negative experiences with people in the workplace before. I think most people, when they find out I'm trans, they lean more towards the "Wow, I couldn't tell!" camp (which I also hate tbh) rather than the "So, you're not really gay?" camp.

I'm not brave. I'm scared and I'm tired. And I'm angry. I'm very fucking angry.

I've wasted enough time worrying about what other people think. I've been acknowledged as a man 99% of the time every day for the past five or six years.

I recently posted a thing on Facebook about gendered terms I'm comfortable with, and there seems to have been some misunderstanding. I've been out as non-binary for a few years as well. And I'm starting to really reconsider what that means for me.

It doesn't help that this past December, I shaved my entire body and put on a dress to attend my best friend's wedding as her maid of honor. To me, it wasn't a big deal. I had a fantastic time. I felt so pretty, and I enjoyed being gendered differently by people throughout the night.

I enjoy being a gender chameleon. When I'm dressed that way, I don't necessarily care if I'm seen as a woman? But I do think of it more as drag than conforming to femininity, necessarily. If you see me as a woman when I'm literally in drag, that is the fucking point. But if I'm binding and I have a full beard and I'm in a polo shirt and cargo shorts, and you call me a woman, you are going to look like a fucking idiot, and I'm gonna laugh in your face.

Being in a place of healing has allowed me to better understand how I see myself. I'm a gay man. I like having a beard and a deep voice, and I'm lucky enough not to feel shame about my body and the sum of its parts. I'm attracted to men in a gay way. I'm seen as a man by my partner, my friends, my co-workers, my neighbors, by the public who frequents the library where I work.

I don't care for standards of masculinity that prevent me from wearing make up, certain clothing, nail polish. I don't feel ashamed for being short or for sometimes feeling sad. I wish that I could express my gender in the way that I want, but men are not allowed to be soft or pretty, and doing so leaves me vulnerable to being verbally and physically assaulted. Not only that, but expressing my femininity also always seems to be interpreted as a "go ahead" to misgender me and take my decision to transition into question.

So let me be clear. I'm not a woman. In a greater, existential sense, I have transcended gender itself to see it for what it truly is. But if I had to choose (and I do, apparently) then I'm a man. Just think of me as a regular guy.

Cis people think they know what it means to be free of gender. But until you hop the fence, you just don't. Until you commit a gender taboo so unforgiveable that you realize you could run the risk of losing your job, you have no idea. They blithely regurgitate the mantra of "gender is a biological characteristic" as though women were meant to be hairless and men meant to be bastions of logic, free of the taint of emotion. You will never truly be free until you've watched yourself die and rebuilt yourself from the ashes.

Day 24- A letter to your parents

Dear Mom and Dad (Mudge & Pudge),

I am both my mother's and my father's son. When I was growing up, I received endless remarks from friends, relatives, and people I did not particularly know too well about how I strikingly resembled you, Dad. Even though I always thought we had somewhat different facial features—your rounder eyes and slightly hooked nose, for example—I can still see why they might say that. I inherited your thick, wavy hair, defined eyebrows, and your compromised autoimmune genetics. Despite these perceptions, I considered myself a mama's boy for most of my life. Dad, you were mostly stoic, sour, or silly with not much in between. Mom, you were outgoing, compassionate, expressive, temperamental. Dad taught me the value of money, how to build a disciplined work ethic, how to persevere under pressure, how to challenge myself to reach my potential, and to never adopt a defeatist mentality. Mom taught me when to bend the rules, how to speak up for myself, how to build a relationship with God, and how to love others. When I think of some of my friends who grew up in single parent homes or with divorced parents, I grateful that I had an opportunity to have both a mother and father figure throughout my life.

But in honesty, part of the reason I have refrained from pursuing serious relationships or prioritizing marriage over the years has been because of the glimpses of your dysfunctional marriage that I witnessed as a child. Dad would not be open or communicative with Mom, Mom would berate and belittle Dad in front of me and the girls, Dad would prioritize his dental practice over being involved with the family, Mom would helicopter parent us to compensate, Dad would go silent after quarrels and arguments for days on end, Mom would rant and rave at Dad and the rest of us in response. This list can go on. It was not a healthy parental dynamic and my early childhood years, while still relatively stable, were not necessarily the fondest memories of mine.

And yet I know now how much both of you have sacrificed for me and the girls every week, month, and year that you raised us. Mom insisted on sending us all to private schools since she knew how subpar the Hawaii public education system truly is. Dad was just fine sending us to public school, having raised himself up by his bootstraps from Kaimuki High School and coming from a lower middle class background. So you both "compromised" by sending us to private school. By the time I graduated, you had invested 14 years into my education, even paying for me to repeat ninth grade when I transferred high schools. On top of that, you funded all my extracurricular pursuits, including piano and cello lessons, academic tutoring lessons, athletic endeavors (soccer, basketball, swimming, tennis, taekwondo), Boy Scouts, and Youth Symphony. Dad usually drove me there and picked me up and rarely ever complained about it, or really complained in general at all—aside from Democrat policies and high taxes, etc.. We did not always regularly go on vacations each year, but when we did, they were some of my most cherished memories together as a family—traveling to San Diego, Yosemite, Seattle, Vancouver, South Korea, Italy, Paris, Zion, Grand Canyon, and New Orleans.

Dad, everyone always told me how much you loved me by the way you talked about me when I was not around. There are only a small handful of occasions when we had genuine conversations about our love for each other despite some of our differences. I was your somewhat wayward first born and only son, who had inclinations towards drinking beer and smoking pot, who went off to college to major in Political Science at a liberal California university—even turning down your beloved alma mater UW to do so. I absorbed many of your socio-political beliefs like a sponge when I was younger, but began to challenge them as I grew into adolescence. I renounced almost all of your views by the time I had entered college, and my sharp debating skills coupled with your parental frustration at seeing your child ideologically turning against you led to our dinner table debates erupting into full on heated arguments. It was only after I experienced more of the real world beyond the university bubble that I began to understand where you were coming from, and my perspectives began to rapidly change. I am glad that for the last few years we were able to reach a respectful equilibrium between our views, with both of us sharing much more in common than before once I reexamined and embraced many of the conservative traditional values that I was brought up with.

Mom, you truly embody the Mama Duck who protects, attacks, and, mostly importantly, quacks. As the spiritual leader of our house, you raised us how to pray, how to cultivate our faith, and go before God for whatever challenges we were facing. Even though you often neglected to cook us a nutritious breakfast before we went to school—as we were resigned to eating 물밥 and spam or Vienna sausage that Dad served us instead since you were typically sleeping in—you are a phenomenal cook when you put your mind to it, and your motivation over the lockdowns to cook dinner every night proved it. Your creativity and artistic impulses run through me as your son, along with your keen ear for music and fluid skills with communication and linguistics. Despite being a petite Asian lady, your outspoken yet diplomatic disposition has taught me how to speak up for myself and advocate for what I need. We always remember the time when we were watching the Lion King broadway play and two errant audience members were fumbling around in the dark looking for their seats, blocking peoples' views, and much to our amusement you shouted out loud "Can't see!" I can approach you to talk about (almost) everything going on in my life, and you offer sound feedback and advice stemming from years of parental wisdom. We laugh and joke with each other and share a special mother-son bond that would make many of your Korean ajumma friends jealous. Mom and Dad, I am relieved that my later memories of your marriage were mostly neutral-positive. The constant arguments and quarreling gave way to peaceful indifference and more light-hearted banter. I could see your dynamic evolving once Mom began working at the dental office with Dad, where you two maintained a courteous and professional relationship while at work, and then often did your own things off hours—Mudge with her Korean Church activities and Dudge with his conservative talk radio, college sports broadcasts, Candy Crush computer game, and World War II related literature. For all these years, you both provided for and took care of the dogs—Benny, Fifi, and later Teddy—in your own capacities. Dad walked the dogs at least two to three times a day, Mom would take them to regular vet and grooming appointments, and you each rotated between who was going to hand feed the finicky Maltese. Even though most of our childhood was spent at the mall or movie theater, I am glad that our later family time was spent hiking around Hawaii on your off-days and enjoying more of the outdoors.

Everything that our family has been through this past year has completely redefined reality for all of us. Dad, I know you are able to receive this message through the ethers even though you're no longer with us in this earthly realm. Mom always brings up how she is saddened by how hard you worked your entire life without getting to truly enjoy your retirement years. I have been thinking recently about how your deathbed thoughts must have been ones of absolute uncertainty for me since I was still sedated in a coma in Louisiana and my condition was deteriorating each day. I would like to think that your final prayer to God was to spare my life, even if He was not going to spare your own. Arnou told me the day before you passed away, he had a dream that we were both sitting on a beach in Hawaii, dressed in all white, talking and laughing like nothing had happened. We might have even shared a joke or two at Arnou's expense, maybe teasing him for being Mexican. When he woke up, he was disturbed and distressed because he interpreted it to mean that we had both passed away and were in Heaven together. One of the most vivid moments of when I was in Shreveport was when I overheard a nurse at the front desk receive a phone call from an unknown number in Hawaii informing the hospital that you had passed away. The exact cause of death was not specified. The caller wanted the hospital to receive this information so they could accurately mark the date and time of your passing. Meanwhile, Mom was frantically trying to prevent me from hearing any of this information and she was reading the Bible out loud to me, hoping to distract me. Eventually a respiratory therapist was visibly annoyed by her behavior and told Mom to give it a rest and to let me be in peace for a moment. Even though I heard the news, I was not sure how to process it all exactly. I felt numb to anything at the time and I still was not sure where I was or how I had gotten to that point.

When I woke up from my coma and regained my consciousness again, one of the first things I asked Mom was "How is Dad?" as a trick question. I already knew the answer. She quietly conferred with Lauren momentarily and they agreed that it was time to tell me that you had gotten sick with covid, hospitalized, intubated, and passed away from multiple organ failures. On Lauren's birthday too. Turns out, though, there was never a phone call to the hospital. It never happened. All communications about your condition and progression were done outside of my presence, so there was no way that I could have potentially overheard any conversations about your passing and subconsciously listened it even while I was sedated. I do not how to logically or rationally explain this experience other than a vision that was granted to me from God to inform me of your passing in real time. I believe through the ethers, God allowed me to glimpse the reality that was unfolding so that I would be mentally prepared to process it when I woke up.

Everything Mom has been through since then—handling the logistical aftermath of your untimely passing, triaging the financial affairs, communicating with local friends and colleagues of yours about the next steps, scheduling funeral service arrangements, managing and discontinuing the myriad accounts connected to your name—is a pure testament to her mental fortitude, resilience, and strength, as well as the loving and magnanimous network of close friends that you have cultivated throughout your life. And she was responsible for scaling this seemingly impossible mountain of burdens and responsibilities all while she was spending day and night in the hospital to visit and take care of me in the ICU. Without Mom and Lauren by my side, I could not have survived the way I did. They supported me, fought for me, and advocated for my well-being even when some of the nurses and doctors did not. They provided spiritual encouragement and necessary diversions from the stress and trauma of an extended hospitalization. They cared for me in a way that only family can and ever will.

Mom and Dad, I was not always the greatest son. I got into my fair share of troubles and mischief throughout my life. There are things I probably will never share with you, Mom, and other things that Dad might already have known but never personally addressed with me. My reckless and rebellious tendencies finally caught up to me and landed me in the hospital, as if to teach me a lesson once and for all. But even when I crashed and burned and hit a rock bottom so cavernous I did not think I could ever emerge from, your steadfast love and support carried me through my most shameful and desperate days of being on this earth. Dad, I now live in your honor and memory, and I am committed to living an upright life for the rest of my years—a debt to not only the donor of my new pair of lungs but also to you, my earthly father, and my Almighty Creator as well. Dad, I miss you and I know that you are proud of me for making out alive and never accepting defeat when every odd was stacked against me. I owe this to you. Mom, I do not believe I will ever meet another woman who will love me as much as you do. You will forever be the only woman I ever love with all my heart. I am blessed and privileged to have been raised as your son. For everything I have and everything that I am, I am forever grateful to both of you.
