Haha Whoops Uh Oh! (UPDATED 6/11/23)

so this isn't the type of post I normally like to make, but! uh! hey! I just got ambushed by a HUGE tuition bill I wasn't expecting, and I'm out of options to pay it - they've already applied my scholarship and loans, I'm already working multiple jobs that are basically just barely paying for rent + groceries, and I only have enough on my credit card to pay for One of the three payments they're requiring, which only gets me through till July (with, again, no options that get me that amount of money by that time).

further full disclosure, this bill came at like, the worst possible time - they've given me four days to make at minimum the first payment (which, again, I can only do by maxing out my credit card), and on top of juggling multiple jobs I'm also in the middle of two classes, including one which involves upcoming travel (that is already paid for, thank god). Hence, me Scrambling a li'l bit!!

as such, I've set a new goal on my ko-fi!! it is, of course, HUGE, but genuinely any small amount people are able to contribute goes a huge way to giving me SOME way to pay it off. note that 3-coffee doodle requests are still A Thing, commissions are still a thing (if you have one active I'll be getting to them this & next week), and I'll be streaming wherever I can to pull together money that way - wherever it comes, any support is HUGE and I mean that.

UPDATE 6/11/23: I am updating the original post to remove the ko-fi link and yet you fine folks know: HOLY HECK, y'all managed to get my tuition dealt with. words truly cannot express my gratitude for that - I'm so, so, SO humbled and thankful for everyone who came out to get me out of a really rough situation.

AITA for asking my parents to pay my tuition for the semester, lying about how I lost my scholarship, and then planning on lying to my dad regarding his requirements in exchange for him paying the tuition?

My (20X) college has a scholarship for offspring of faculty members, and I was lucky enough to have my application accepted by the college that my dad (53M) works at. This means that I get a full ride scholarship; if I graduate within 4 years, I won't have to pay a single penny to my college (books and supplies not included, of course).

Unfortunately, the scholarship does have two requirements; I need to have taken at least a certain amount of credits semester before (not a ridiculous number), and for that semester, I need to have gotten over a 2.0/4.3 GPA. Easy enough, right? Who can't get a GPA over 2.0?

Well. I suffered a mental health downfall the past semester and I ended up failing half my classes. I was unable to sit my finals. I know this wasn't smart of me, and I think I should've done something about my academic situation other than just wait for the semester to be over, but I had quit a semester due to my mental health decline previously and I didn't want a repeat of that. In any case, I got a GPA of about 1.6. I'm not on probation but I did receive a warning.

Fortunately, this doesn't mean I lost my scholarship for good. I just need to fulfill those requirements in the upcoming semester and I get it back.

I realized I did need to pay my tuition this semester two days before tuition fee acceptance closes and I debated telling only one of my parents. My mom wants me to finish college no matter what, and my dad has told me that he does not care anymore as long as I don't stress him out. He's also told me he no longer has any expectations for me whatsoever. I did also consider talking about it with my brother and borrowing money from him to put together the tuition fee.

I figured I'd bite the bullet and just told my dad, who I know has been stressed about my future and how badly I'm doing in college. I just casually dropped it as I was making breakfast for myself and then we had a lengthy conversation that my mother (51F) joined when she got back home.

I don't remember much of the conversation (I may have memory problems) but the AITA mentioned part is that I lied to my parents and told them I did sit all my finals and try my best. I didn't. I tried that for mid term exams but I had nothing to write, so for finals I didn't sit them at all. This happened with three of the classes I was taking. I just didn't take my finals. My dad was suspicious of my claim; he said that as a professor himself he wouldn't fail students who at least submitted homework and sat their exams to write anything at all, but I maintained that I tried.

The conclusion was that my dad would be willing to pay my tuition if I got my shit together and also deleted my social media, which he thinks is a drain on my time and energy. He's not wrong. I deleted my Twitter accounts immediately afterwards (which my parents don't know about) because I've been thinking about it, but I can't really bring myself to get rid of Discord, where so many of my friends are. People I've met while studying internationally, long-term friends who moved to other countries; Discord is the only way to contact these people.

This is the AITA part; if my dad follows up on that particular requirement to check if I deleted Discord, which he particularly dislikes (he has previously confiscated the electronics I bought with my own money that I earned, after he saw me on muted call at night with some friends), I plan on deleting the app/program on my devices but using it anyway as a website. This would be a betrayal of my dad's trust in me, but there's no love lost between us anyway. He's already told me he doesn't love me unconditionally. (Yes, I'm his biological child and he did raise me.)

I also feel like an asshole because I could've settled this with the help of my brother; I'd pick up a job during the winter break to pay him back, but it would have been done eventually. Or I could've just gone to my mom. She works her own job, and we could've figured it out together without telling my dad. I told my dad anyway, wanting him to pay the tuition, even though I knew that talking about having to spend money on his kids stresses him out deeply.

My mom also told my dad to go to therapy (in detail, so I know it wasn't just something she said as a throwaway thing) during the conversation. It did get heated. I don't disagree, but I don't know if that'd be okay; mental health is stigmatized where I am, and my dad as a grown adult man and a respected professor if seen going to therapy could have his reputation kind of effected. It wouldn't have happened if I just brought up this whole situation quietly up to my mom, or just my brother.

So I lost my scholarship, I lied to my parents about the technicalities of how that happened, and I'm asking for some amount of money from my parents but also planning on lying to them in regards to the terms they set out. AITA?

so we all know that carmy would usually hate it when people bug him while he's in the zone and he's cooking, right? okay but picture this. you're over at his place. he's making pasta sauce and he just looks so peaceful and before you even know what you're doing you walk over and wrap your arms from behind him and you kinda just rest your head against him. he's taken aback at first. yes you two started dating but... physical touch? he kinda tenses up a little.

"is this okay?' you ask cautiously.

a beat. "yeah... it's great," he says with a little smile, turning back to look at you. now he can't cook at home without you hugging him :,)

you once tried to convince him to let you sit on his head and tug on his hair while he was cooking

"like the rat in ratatouille!" you had said excitedly. he looked lost. "you know... the movie? ratatouille? isn't that... like... required reading for chefs?"

apparently he had never even seen it which made you shed a tear for his childhood

of course you had made him watch it with you that very night. he mumbled something about health codes and about how anton ego's assholery reminded him of his old boss but he thought the movie was pretty cute. a rat that could cook? he would have to remember to text richie later that he had found a biopic that was based on his life story

"soooo?" you said expectantly when the credits started rolling. again, he looked lost. "will you let me be the rat?" you say with feigned seriousness.

"absolutely not."

he drinks his coffee black. when i say black i mean black black. only occasionally does he get it with two sugars if he really feels like it. when he tried that shaken oatmilk espresso brown sugar or something (he could never remember the name) that you always get from starbucks, the sweetness of it had him shocked

"honey, this is like... 5% coffee and 95% milk ಠ_ಠ"

you two have made it a tradition where you'll go over to his place and dust off one of his dozens of cookbooks, flip to a random page, and make what's on it. sometimes it comes out absolutely awful, but you've found some real gems, too. you two's favorite ravioli recipe had come from a weathered cookbook that was at the bottom of one of his piles

A Little About Your Neighborhood Bebepac

True story, most of my life, I lived in chaos. I grew up with a single mother who couldn't manage money, always in debt, always needing money. There was always a problem that always required more. As a young adult, I was not told about or learned about credit. So what happened when I got into college? I fell in the credit card trap and ruined my credit. I lived a chaotic life because it was modeled for me. Now, being older and wiser, I have and am taking steps to correct my credit because I see the importance of what having good credit can do, but also having a plan.

This is not a flex by any means, but last month, I spent $1100 on my vehicle just between brakes and rotors. My original plan was to just replace the back brakes, as the warning sensor had been going off a bit, and the front ones just started. And save a little money and then get the front ones done. Turns out that both front and brake pads and rotors were about the same wear on them, and I had to do all at once.

But, I had the money because I had been working on saving some. And... then I needed tires. I, fortunately, was able to get a credit card via the tire shop for that, and those got put on my SUV as well the following week. I shopped around for my tires and picked the best ones for my vehicle, with a rebate for them, too!

This same situation, three, five, or even ten years ago would have sent me into a panic, not knowing where I was going to come up with $2900 total for everything I needed to take care of, (not to mention NC has a yearly vehicle tax and inspection as well) but because of planning and "upper level adulting" is what I call it. I took care of it all myself!!! And that part about all of this felt really, really good.

Now my car kiddo Kitt is driving like a brand new car. You've seen her before in my fics.

is writing for video games exactly what you had imagined it would be? (also congrats on your success so far!)

not at all, but i think that's more to do with me not knowing what to expect from it in the first place. before i got into game writing, i'd only ever written prose, and you almost never get the chance to do "pure" prose writing in games. [of course, i'm just talking about the kind of game i work on right now. there's a wide indie market of interactive fiction, VNs, and other experimental genres if you want to see how prose and games can interact.]

i also had initial industry experience that didn't accurately represent what other game writing jobs would be like. at voltage, we were given extremely densely-plotted beat sheets and afforded no opportunity to pitch our own ideas. that's not to deprive the writers of credit. on the contrary: every voltage character got their spark from the authorial voice of the writer behind them. i'm just saying that we worked under really strict parameters, and we tended to only get our own beats in when there was slack to pick up. flash forward to coh3, where my lead told me in the first meeting, "go forth, do research, and come back with a set of soldier story pitches." talk about culture shock! at obsidian, it's more of a mix: sometimes it's my brainchild, sometimes i help flesh out another designer's idea.

the big thing i would say about "what studio game writing is like" is that you do a bunch of different things on different days. one day you might have to write barks. one day you might pitch a quest, which is all in-house documentation that players will never see. once that pitch is approved, you might have to write its dialogue. or you might get tapped to write examinables that aren't part of any quest. ["examinables" are those notes that you find and read throughout a game's world. you know, "dear diary, my super serum is complete!" next to a blown-up skeleton.] i get bored quickly, so this is good for me. but it's definitely nothing like sitting down my deep, dark well and picking at my prose stories.

the other - maybe more important - thing is you're not working in a vacuum. other departments will impose requests and restrictions upon you. in prose, you can write anything. your vocabulary and your imagination are your only limits. in game writing, you're often cooking with the ingredients you've got. you may pitch a mind-blowing idea for a fight scene, but it could require moves that the animation team doesn't have. or you may be assigned a mission that has some kind of puzzle, and it's your job to convincingly fit the puzzle into the story. it sounds frustrating, and it can be. believe me, i would love for all my game characters to get Super Deluxe Bespoke AK Outfit Designs. but after a while, you learn where you can dig into the details and where it's better to keep your options open.

I've finally achieved my goal to check out the infamous Digger webcomic that's been lying in my firefox bookmark for an embarrassingly amount of years. Critically acclaimed as it were, I was baffled on how a story about a wombat could wow even the hardiest of critics.

Then I read it, and I recall some bit of skepticism. Within the span of a chapter or two, the titular Digger runs into Ganesha, his worshipers, a shadowy child with zero comprehension of general principles and morals, hyena people, dead gods, and oh, and an oracular slug.

They seemed so widely disconnected that I couldn't imagine how Ursula Vernon could connect them seamlessly to its world. Turns out, she didn't have to try pretty hard. And to be fair, Digger didn't give enough credit to this magic-infused world. ...At first.

This is the expression she gives off on a frequent basis, because she's surrounded by well-meaning chosen one monks who is a tad mad after seeing a horrifying god figure, compassionate gods who understand her frustration yet require so much of her, ethical dilemmas and too many questions with little answers, a dude with a deer head brought upon himself through sheer dumbassery, lizard people whose honor and culture revolves around the skins they cut off from people (and they do not necessarily have to be corpses), and so forth.

And I think a combination of Digger pointing out the absurdity of the world blends all these seemingly random elements into a cohesive whole. A lot of this is owed to the creator's anthropologist background: her knowledge of human culture and religion shines and she treats every single element equally and with great care.

Digger is great because it stars a wombat who is disdainful of Godly figures and is quick to rationalize what others take for granted, but is just as often an eccentric byproduct of her culture (her behavior is just in the nature of wombat society; it's a world of proper planning, architecture/geology, and loads of paperwork.) She desperately wants to go home, but eventually grows attached to the people around her and learns to respect them, be they be a Monk or a prophetic slug because she, ultimately, wants to do the right thing. And they, in turn, treat her in equal measure.

It's a comic where philosophical, cultural, and ethical differences mean these characters can discuss and debate about the individual world they live in, but also unite and understand each other. And that's really the beauty of Digger; we are all empathetic and willing to listen to another, even if our lives are different and maybe contradictory to one another. Ultimately, they're all good people trying to rationalize the world they live, be it through logic or faith or whatever. And they can all act as one to stop something far more damning.

Digger is a wordy comic, but it was actually a breeze to read. I think Ursula Vernon's magic with lengthy text boxes is owe to how she utilizes it. With dialogue, they're often short and manageable. Whenever Digger narrates though, the giant text box is often superimposed over looming backdrops of nature and towns that the character is currently in. The simplicity of the background (further helped by its generous use of chiaroscuro) means it affords a space to breathe in spite of any ongoing blabbering.

I'm kicking myself for not reading this further, because now I'd love to own the omnibus, but it's been out of stock for a while (though the individual volumes are still up for sale.) I'm sure this comic has been compared to another particular graphic novel before, so I'm very sorry for being tedious, but it reminds me of BONE so damn much. Maybe that's also why I liked it.

Man, I'm so glad I read this. Digger is so friggin' good at mixing ethical, religious, cultural, and societal discussion and worldbuilding without the pretentiousness that often comes with it. I feel very enlightened having read this, but also find it engaging, funny (using foot notes to humorously describe wombat culture was a treat), open-minded, and hopeful. It's a great demonstration of the marks we have left on this planet for thousands of years, and how it carries on through out descendants. We can make of it however we can.

do u have any advice for making gfx? i really like yours and your concepts are always so creative

ahh, thank you so much, you have no idea how much this means to me 🥹 i'm really hard on myself about my gfx. but i absolutely love making them, and i'd love to share some advice with you! i'm not sure if you already make gfx or not, so i'll include some things about getting started along with general advice / stuff geared to someone who already has some experience so that hopefully, wherever you are in your journey, something here might be helpful. i hope i'm not just giving you info you already know JBDJB 😭 so feel free to come back and let me know if you need something different ... if you have specific questions about a particular set or anything else like that, i always welcome that too! this got long, so i'll put it below the cut.

1. getting started - i'll write this point assuming you've never made a gfx before, so if you have, feel free to skip it! the only program i use is photoshop for gfx. and the main thing with these that i didn't know at first is that you can (and should) use a bigger canvas than what you would for gifs ! my typical size for a gfx panel is somewhere around 1080x1200 px. if you are placing gifs anywhere in them, you will likely have to resize down to meet tumblr file size limits. - some things that you should know how to do in ps: creating a clipping mask, rasterizing/resizing, smart filters, eyedropper tool, and different blending techniques such as overlays. if any of these things sound like 'omg what???' (they did to me as a beginner) let me know and i'm happy to explain more! - for total beginners, my biggest recommendation is to start by using templates. this helps you get a feel for what layers go into a gfx in the styles that you like, and makes it easier to start making some cool things and boost your confidence before you feel comfortable starting entirely from scratch and developing your own style. you can search 'psd template' here on tumblr, or on deviantart (i'll talk more about sites i use to find things below). just make sure you read each creator's own rules before you use something. i also make templates! you can find them here. i don't require credit and you can edit mine basically however you want, aside from combining them with other templates.

2. finding inspiration aside from things i see right here on tumblr, source material that just really speaks to me, or ideas that pop into my head while i'm driving (seriously ... almost all my gfx ideas come to me while i'm in my car or out taking a walk 😂), my favorite places to look for inspo are behance and deviantart (both of which are also great for finding elements you can use for free!). usually i have at least a baseline idea before i go into any gfx, so i know what to search for to find some design ideas -- for example, 'yearbook design,' 'retro advertisement,' 'lyric poster,' 'zine,' 'y2k,' 'film photo story,' etc are all things i've searched before. if i have used a source for inspiration, it will always be linked in my caption, so definitely take a look if there are any in particular that you love to see that inspo source! (as a general note, you should always link back to your own inspiration sources, it's just the right thing to do)

3. my process (from idea into photoshop) once i have an idea and i've gathered some inspiration, i usually sketch out my basic layout idea into a notebook. with gfx, composition is something you need to keep in mind within each individual panel as well as the set as a whole. i think about what i want the main focus to be and what basic elements i want in each panel. then i will start gathering my resources and start getting things in photoshop! often, i don't really know what it's going to look like until i start putting it together. that's kind of half the fun though. throughout making most of my gfx, i consult at least one friend on layout, colors, etc especially if i'm not liking something or i'm just stuck and don't know what would make it better. i HIGHLY recommend getting feedback and utilizing other sets of eyes to get your best quality work. i know there are some things i just can't possibly think of on my own, especially when i've been thinking about and looking at something for way too long. once my panels are finished i export them as a png and arrange them on tumblr to see the whole thing together before i post!

4. finding elements i.e. fonts, textures, pngs, etc again, behance and deviantart are great places for this! on behance, it's best to search 'freebie' with what you're looking for because otherwise all the options may be stuff you have to pay for. but they have SO many textures, pngs, fonts, any resource you can think of. with deviantart, be mindful of people who just compile texture/png packs from other sources/artists, because that's basically impossible to properly credit (and you really should do your best to do that). but DA is a great source for things like brushes and hand-drawn elements, and templates too! again, just be sure to read all of op's rules before using their resources. -places to find fonts: behance, fontspace, dafont, and ofc google! -places to find free pngs/icons (i use these for all of my social media templates and more): flaticon -photos you can use for free are available on unsplash -mockups you can use for free are available on behance, unblast, and pixel surplus

5. other important bits - as i've mentioned a few times throughout CREDIT is so important when you are using other people's resources, and using anyone else's work as your inspiration. i always credit when required and often credit even when not required, and just in general always try to mention where i find all my resources especially for sets that i've used a lot of different things for. of course, we can only do our best with this, and i've definitely made mistakes or just lost where i found something in the process of making things, so just have good intentions and try to do what you can to ensure you're giving credit where it's due - it also helps other people find things that they can use for their own work! - don't be afraid to experiment and try things out, i think really what i love so much about gfx is that there are literally infinite possibilities, styles, and ways to improve. keep an open mind and know that nothing is out of your range if you can find the right resources. happy creating, and please know i'm available to talk about anything you have questions on, or if you want to utilize me for feedback !! <3

Woo! Finally came up to one with lyrics!

I'm doing some civil disobedience here, with a metred amount of disobedience. I'd be willing to pay songwriters a reasonable amount (like, an amount comparable to something a human being would pay for a single/MP3) for the ability to reprint/remix music with credit and a link to the original. I would be willing to work with a reasonable copyright of 2-7 years. That's not an option right now. So, I rewrite lyrics and link you to the original on YT (which has paid for the privilege of skirting copyright and can afford it), with credit. And I try to give views to the artist's official account, if possible.

I also use song titles, because we seem to have decided those are not unique enough to be copyrighted, but I have no idea if that, or the rewritten lyrics, will hold up if someone gets pissed and comes after me. This is, conceivably, a risk, but any jailbreak is.

My lyrics are Creative Commons, BY-NC-SA. I would go full public domain, but Disney likes to pull things out of there and copyright the hell out of their version, so I gotta add something to keep them away. Just in case! Pulling from The Animatronic Saga:

Oooh! This is a great opportunity for me to talk about an aspect of The Animatronic Saga that is both incredibly important and interesting to me:

Childhood.

Childhood is a concept that is still recent in human history. Depending on your source and what you really consider childhood to be, it was created between 1500 and the 1940s. No matter what, childhood as a concept changed what the early years of life meant.

No longer were children "little adults," now they were kids. And for the past while-- again, duration depending on when you credit its creation-- this has been the norm for a majority* of countries around the world.

But The Animatronic Saga takes place in 13019. And childhood has changed.

New age requirements have been set in this new time, all of them somewhat depending on their location:

13 is when a child is eligible for TCMA (Teenage Conscription for Military Assistance) if they live within an allied country.

13 is also when kids are given full autonomy over their education and when some jobs are legally open to them.

16 is when children are legally separate from their parents and guardians.

Of course, there are also unspoken rules:

Child labor of some kind is legal in most countries at a varying but young age.

Guardians paid an allotment for taking care of a child (take Maybelle for example, whose aunt receives government aid) will lose funds if the child works.

Arranged marriages are not uncommon, but have changed form a little. Parents will engage their similar-aged children at a young age and wait until they are at least 16 to see it through.

The biggest change in what childhood looks like comes not from any new or changed rules, but simply a change in the economic topography. A much larger percentage of the population is poor or homeless. Automatically, that strips those children of a childhood. Homeless children are distributed to paid guardians who are often terrible homes. It's cyclic.

And even if they are not, from 13 to 19 their name could be chosen at any time and they are sent to train and go to war.

This is all seen as completely acceptable by the majority of the population.

And while there are portions, such as children gaining more autonomy, that are good, even the reasons behind that are bad. Children deserve a safe and stable childhood. I know not all children today get that, but this world levels up the meaning of that. That's why childhood and adulthood are themes within the story as a whole.

crowley is stronger than amara? okie doke. so does cas's janky wing situation mean he still can't zap around? (presumably to add tension or whatever not being able to teleport over to save the day etc). anyway.

always interesting when they choose to have someone be traumatized by the traumatic things they've done/had done to them. this surely isn't the first time cas has beaten dean up, or killed a bunch of people/angels.

remember the days when i grumped about them not even acknowledging the mystery spot trauma for sam? well, i still grump about it. but now that's like a drop in the flood of traumatic experiences that get passed over.

anyway. we'll see how they do this ptsd/agorophobia situation.

too many plotlines/characters ugh. rowena in the wind, metatron popping up, cas doing whatever, crowley trying to control amara, amara out there partially eating people. a good chunk of why 11x04 was good for me was there wasn't all this bullshit going on :p

Aight, let's do this tally style because I'm a tryhard. I'm definitely gonna do a full version where I discuss every single time Violet's almost died from an unfortunate nat1, sooooo

First time our nat1 holder requires help is when she rolls at nat1 in whatever-the-hell-not-falling-under-a-spell-falls-under-as-a-skill-check, and she's almost pulled in by lake fairies and their lake. Prolly did a nat20 in perception, but a nat1 in the uh the not-falling-under-a-spell stat.

Colette saves her from this one, so

Colette - 1 Nicky - 0

Second time kinda is when Violet and Nicky are paired together in Secret of the Snow, and Nicky helps Vi climb down a taaalllll ledge. Like reaaaallllllyyyy tall. Vi didn't roll any nat1s here, it's just a cute moment where Nicky is helping Vi through her acrophobia, and we love the two for it.

Let's consider this a 0.5

Colette - 1 Nicky - 0.5

From Cloud Castle onwards we get a transition in the mood of the series, from "traveling in a weird world full of weird creatures that also has a bit of beauty in them" to "haha fairy go weeeeee". Cloud Castle isn't the most atrocious of this particular instance because it does tie in cloud-related mythology, and it's the first instance of this whole fairy spam thing happening. Anyway, Violet and Nicky are separated for the big parts of this book so we're just gonna skip on over to Treasure of the Sea.

Treasure of the Sea is Violet's first catastrophic nat1. Yes, even worse than almost getting siren-ed. Picture this: there's this cursed Mariana Trench thing that magically pulls down anyone who does the stupid thing and looks into it. A magical wise character is on the other side, so not crossing it is not an option, thus this thing is the magical equivalent of trying to balance on a beam/tightrope without looking down, in the perspective of someone who has no experience in such. Oh yeah and you're swimming across, so it's more like uh... trying to keep your head facing up while swimming. Dem their necks are gonna be sore--

They make Violet's looking down so dramatic for some reason? I mean I get it, but at the same time I don't? She was like "yeah I feel like I need to look but I know I can't,,,, I CAN'T RESIST I'M LOOKING DOWN" "VIOLET NOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

I dunno? It just feels strangely worded? Written? I dunno, either way, Colette somehow resists the magic force of an abyss that literally no one in all of Aquamarina has been able to resist and pulls Vi up to the surface before she can be cursed and turned into a magic fish or something. Musta been the adrenaline, or Colette herself not being pulled down that made this a smidgeon easier. Dang that arm strength to lift all those shopping bags and violin training has been doing wonders for the both of them, somehow they didn't let go of each other-- /hj

OH YEAH AND NICKY SAVES VIOLET'S SUDDENLY DUM ASS FROM TOUCHING A PUFFERFISH AFTER AN INT CHECK NAT1, PAULINA DID YOU STEAL VI'S BRAINCELL AGAIN CAN YOU GIVE IT BACK PLEASE--

Colette - 2 Nicky - 1.5

Now we have Land of the Flowers, probably Violet's worst streak in the book series by far. Woman gets not one, not two, but THREE nat1s in it, each one worse than the last. Colette saves her from two out of three of them, that being the temporary amnesia flowers and almost-falling-twenty-feet-off-magical-stairs.

(Pictures' quality might not be as good because I'd been using drive PDFs this whole time and Land of Flowers doesn't have a PDF in the folder I'm using sooooo)

Unfortunately, despite Nicky being beside Vi in the illustration, it was Colette who saved her.

Colette - 4 Nicky - 1.5

She does have two nat1s in Crystal Fairies, but Will saves her from one while Paulina technically saves her from the other. As you can see this woman is forgetting her RNGesus incense and RNGesus is losing his patience about it more and more.

OKAY Star Fairies! There's only one nat1 Vi has in this one, and Nicky saves her from it. Probably my favorite save because this particular save is goated :D

Colette - 4 Nicky - 2.5

Finally, Magic of the Mirror. There's technically one where Nicky saves the girls from accidentally walking into lava, but technically she was at the front of the group, and anyone else would've done the same if they were in her shoes

Colette - 4 Nicky - 3

Then there's the scene where the girls have to listen to siren queen Esmeralda's song without falling under the spell, and Vi doesn't fare well in these particular trials, as we know. The problem is, as you can see here we don't know which among the girls specifically kept her from breaking from the group. It was more of a team effort thing.

So what is to be done? Should I just give both Nicky and Colette a point here? Orrrrrrr

Nicky and Paulina are closest to Violet in this scene that happens almost immediately after the trial, so point goes to Nicky :3 Am I grasping? Maaayyybbeeee

Colette - 4 Nicky - 4

And that's it! Turns out they kinda tied! Technically tho if you counted the minor occasions where Nicky helped the violin child as full points instead of half points, she would win 5 - 4. I rest my case :D

Oh yeah these aren't even all the nat1s Vi has had in the series. These are only the ones that either Colette or Nicky saved her from.

just finished orv and is it just my small brain or is it really damn hard to find any plotholes? are there any plotholes in orv to begin with?? like im not trying to be condescending (id be biased instead since i like it to muchh lolololl) but is orv really plothole-free??

i doubt your brain is as small as you think, give yourself some credit! cause you're right, there's none.

i know there's others who may think otherwise, but i'm inclined to agree with you! i'd say anything in orv that could be considered a "plothole" by some people is simply purposefully vague, not necessary to focus on, or convoluted by design, thus requiring readers to use analysis, intuition, and/or suspension of disbelief. which is just par for the course when reading fiction, so...not really plotholes.

i see lots of fans - of anything really, not just orv - throwing around the word plothole for things that aren't plotholes. not every case of loose ends, or lack of detail, or even just bad or lazy writing is a plothole. like. they can be, but not always.

plotholes are called that cause they're like potholes in a road. they're something that Needs to be patched up for a smooth driving experience. if they go unpatched - whether through lack of ability or forgetting to do so - that's a persistent issue. just as potholes disrupt driving, plotholes are things the author failed to fill in that disrupt the readers' ability to proceed along the plotline (or worse, contradicting previously established plot points).

nothing in orv does this! that isn't to say there aren't any loose ends (there's a few). and that doesn't mean there's nothing that i wish i'd gotten to see more of (i'd have loved more kimcom interactions), or gotten a clearer explanation for (suspension of disbelief is truly necessary for any timeloop). but as far as plotholes? nah, there's none. all the plot points connect properly. it all hits right when it's meant to.

I wish the argument that Elain "doesn't deserve" Azriel or Lucien would go away.

Is she a bad person? Is she unkind to her friends and family and 99.9% of everyone else out there? Does she not treat Azriel with respect? Does she not make him feel happiness?

It's amazing how many arguments there were in support of Nesta. That she needed someone to love her, show her she was worthwhile even though she kept pushing everyone away. That she needed to be shown that she was still deserving of love despite lashing out and was worthy of Cassian regardless of how she treated him.

Somehow, because Elain has not yet had her novel and she comes off as unhelpful / worthless to people (though this can easily be disproven), that is the reason she's unworthy. I guess in real life that means a Gardner is "unworthy" of finding love with anyone who is considered of a higher station in life? That a baker should only date someone that has a salary of equal pay? Is that what others are taking from all this because that's the message I'm getting. That ONLY bold and brave warriors in these novels are deserving of one another.

Or that she currently does not interact with Lucien but he is not, at this time, friend or family to her. She does not "owe" a virtual stranger her smiles or attention. It is not her responsibility to make Lucien feel good just because we love Lucien and some of us hope that they'll eventually overcome the hurdles standing in their way. I hope that will be her choice but it is not her duty. Not engaging with him is definitely uncomfortable to witness but are we really going to say that's worse than when Nesta called Cassian a "bastard born nobody" and insulted his "performance"? When Nesta refused to even accept his gift? (this is not to bash Nesta either, I'm just pointing out parallels). Would you rather Elain was verbally rude to Lucien? To have her make a comment regarding his eye or the fact that he was chased out of his own home?

Literally, unless you treat every single person in your life with 100% kindness all the time, strangers, enemies, coworkers, friends, and family alike and expect the characters in this series to do the exact same (and if you like either Feyre or Nesta, Rhysand, etc as most of us do then obviously you DON'T require a character to treat everyone perfectly) then I truly have no idea where this mentality has come from.

Also Elain alone does not deserve to be called "racist" because she was engaged to Graysen. Every single one of the sisters had prejudices about the Fae. Humans as a species feared them. They grew up scared of their kind and not for no reason. Elain saw her sister KIDNAPPED by one after being raised on horrifying stories and she fell in love with Graysen shortly after. Is it any surprise that she didn't hold it against Graysen and his father that they felt they had reason to defend their home against what they perceived as a true threat? I'm sure with time, Elain would have grown uncomfortable with the things he was doing especially since (by the second book) she was already willing to risk her engagement to help Feyre but are we really going to hold it against her that she didn't immediately end her engagement the second her sister was turned? That she still loved him after she was turned? Misjudging any group is a mistake that's not uncommon but what matters is you're willingness to change and grow. Considering Elain developed friends and affection (Azriel) for the Fae, even her willingness to treat Azriel, Cassian and Rhysand with kindness in the Human Lands, I'd definitely say she's capable of realizing her mistakes.

Does it really make sense that two males, both highly regarded and desired, both very intelligent and both who are capable of sensing things others can not, would have developed an interest in such an unworthy female? If so, you're not giving characters you claim to love very much credit. And before we start with the "Lucien only likes her because of the bond" then I'd like to point out that you're then basically calling out Rhysand and Cassian for only having feelings for Feyre and Nesta for the same reason.

Just seen a cool theory regarding the top secret reveal tomorrow!👀

What if they are going to drop the first episode of season 5 (like a Christmas Day special or something). Like all the action that takes place right where season 4 left off. Then they have the time jump from the start of episode 2 in 2024. Like there are those pictures of Noah schnapp in a harness wearing his roller rink outfit and he hasn’t been in any scenes that require a harness, unless of course the first episode has already been filmed👀. Or that the actor that plays Lonnie was pictured at the table read in season 4? There’s a lot of behind the scenes photos, like that person on the stretcher, that weren’t in season 4 that could be potentially used for this episode. I’m rambling now but how cool would it be to have that special one off episode, with the ending of the episode revealing (or at least teasing) the whereabouts of a certain beloved metalhead!😱🦇

If that happened, I'd actually be screaming (either with happiness because Eddie is back, or with rage because we haven't seen him yet). And while I definitely agree with you in parts - I wholly agree that some scenes for the start of ST5 ep 1 before the time jump have been filmed already if not all. But marketing-wise, they wouldn't show an entire episode beforehand, and not without promoting.

I do, however, believe it's possible they'd show a little clip. A small one, a few seconds maybe. And I think it's possible that a clip teasing Eddie's return because all the promo for a supposedly dead character - the crop circle etc. - as well as Joe's ominous, sketchy reactions as soon as he's asked about ST5, would make sense if they did that. I know it's been only 5 months since Vol2 aired, but it could be seen as a belated post credit scene, like the one teasing Hopper's return after ST3 (which actually was in the post credits but you know what I mean).

Promotion-wise, it would make sense because if we knew Eddie would be back, they could sell a lot more merch even before ST5 for one, and they'd crash the internet 😂 And ST day next year might be too close to ST5 already to do something like that. Eddie was THE fan fav, to the point where Shawn Levy called our love for him the Eddie Phenomenon, and releasing something regarding Eddie before the rest of the trailers drop next year (which will also crash the internet) would be a clever promo move, in my opinion, to keep our spirits high.

And we can't forget that it was Joe Quinn promoting the Stranger Things Day event/viewing of Vol2 👀

Which all in all, I'm not saying I'm confident that's what the Super Secret will be but it's not out of the realm of possibility
