Podcasts I Adore - Re: Dracula or This Year, Our Friend Jonathan Has a Podcast!
"I had for dinner, or rather supper, a chicken done up some way with red pepper, which was very good but thirsty. (Memorandum: Get recipe for Mina.)"
I wanted to join "Dracula Daily" ever since I heard of it. To me, this is a stroke of genius; it's just the perfect approach to this book. I mean, not only is Bram Stoker's horror classic an epistolary novel with precise dates given for every journal entry or letter written by one of its protagonists, it also spans quite an ideal amount of time, i.e. roughly half a year. Long enogh to give it a feeling of something interesting and important slowly unraveling, short enough to not feel like too much of a commitment.
So yeah, I really wanted to join "Dracula Daily". Especially because I wanted to read the novel in English for years already (so far I've only read its German translation, because that's my native language). But, alas, I do not find the time so easily to add a book to my to do list, so I ended up not joining this lovely book club last year, fearing I'd miss out on most of the entries sooner or later.
Enter "Regarding Dracula". Right after seeing it for the very first time I knew this will be perfect for me. I already have a habit of listening to audio drama on my daily commute, and preferably in the form of fictional podcasts. So quite literally, @re-dracula had me at hello.
And gosh, they did not disappoint. Although I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed to find out that the format is more that of a classical audio drama, with voice actors speaking every line of their respective character. Originally, I was hoping for a more podcast-like approach, meaning that each actor speaks all of the text of a journal entry or letter, period. As if Jonathan would make a podcast instead of notes in his journal. I simply like it when audio fiction uses the possibilities of podcasts, and "Dracula" felt like something that could profit from this way of storytelling, too. So yes, I admit it: I was a bit disappointed. But not for long.
After hearing just a few sentences of Karim Kronfli as Dracula, I immediately understood the decision to breathe life into each character this way. I mean, I love Ben Galpin's work as Jonathan, but Dracula really, really profits from Kronfli's nonchalant but still breathtakingly powerful and confident take on this charakter.
And Mr. Kromfli is not the only one who makes a redefiningly marvellous job here. So far, all the voice actors go far out of their way to make me fall in love with each and every one of them: Ben Galpin's Jonathan is heartbreakingly relatable, Isabel Adomakoh Young's Mina is capable and charming beyond measure, and Beth Eyre's Lucy is just gorgeous. Yes. I'm in love.
In addition to all that talent of its cast, "Re: Dracula" also has a neat and absolutely on point score and sound design. And, just like the basic idea of "Dracula Daily", it really gives you a feeling of how time passes between the journal entries and letters. Haven't heard anything of Jonathen for a while? One does start to worry a bit. Lucy answering to Mina just two days after the Mina's letter? Wow, that was quick, I guess (not sure how quickly the postal service worked back then, though). Even if one has read "Dracula" again and again, I am sure this form of presentation can grant new insights!
So, if you, like me, are a more eager listener than reader, or if you happen to like close-to-perfection audio drama, then please give this a shot! I bet you, like me, will soon be finding yourself eagerly, yearningly awaiting the next bit of news from your good friend Jonathan, who hopefully soon returns from that terrible business trip of his. 9 out of 10 points.

my brain feels like it's melting. i don't know whether i love this show or want to erase it from my memory forever but either way, i can't look away from the screen. all of the abrupt endings feel like a fever dream.

Palm is not to be underestimated
This might be a common understanding but I haven't been able to stop thinking about how Palm is being shown as shy, tentative, a fish out of water (pun intended)...and yet there have been quite a few hints as to something deeper to his character.
At the end of ep 1, Neungdiao challenges Palm on the rooftop, getting him to admit he's been sent there to protect Neungdiao and then asking if he's capable of the task:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Palm may have looked unsure when he answered, "It's my job, I'll find a way to do it well," but my guess is that Palm is more than well-equipped for the role. In fact, despite his appearances as a 'humble fisherman', I think he's been well trained and prepared for this kind of role - whether that's specifically for Neungdiao or just in general - and if his fear and submission in the face or mere mention of his father is anything to go by, I think the training may have been dealt with a hard hand either from/by his father or by others close to him.
Tumblr media
First, Palm knows his way around a gun (and we'll see him able to shoot exceptionally well in ep 3):
Tumblr media
He also has very good fighting and defence training, and has the mindset to expect the unexpected in all environments:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His instinct in the car is to protect his charge and look towards the danger, just as his father does in the front seat, instead of cower and protect himself as might be natural for someone if they were 'just' a fisherman:
Tumblr media
And his automatic body language in front of his actual boss, Tanya, is exactly like his father - a kind of formal stance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is very different to when it's just them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So far, Palm doesn't adopt this position around Neungdiao when away from his father and Tanya even though Palm says Neungdiao is his boss...but I would watch out for it in the future as a possible indicator of a change in their relationship. Maybe he genuinely wants to be Neungdiao's friend and this is his only way of showing it...or maybe he doesn't think it's necessary to do it in front of Neungdiao because he's really there under Tanya (and his father's) authority...or perhaps it's something else entirely (I hope not to lull Neungdiao into a false sense of security before double crossing him if Palm's father did have anything to do with Pipop's death and Palm is under the influence of his father...)
Anyway, all this, in a way, is to say that Palm must have also learnt how to identify untrustworthy or suspicious people as part of his training...and so I'm absolutely going to side with him in his wariness of Ben (whether this is born out of jealousy because he like-likes Neungdiao or just from his duties to protect him).
Tumblr media
I've already mentioned how I've started to not trust Ben - the show tried to press the message a few too many times that he's a good guy - and I think it's very interesting that Ben was looking on when the guys on the motorcycle stopped in front of Neungdiao's car. Perhaps there to witness something he helped set in motion? @absolutebl expressed that they're "not entirely sure about Chimon’s casting in this role" and I'd like to posit that maybe 'Ben' is acting this way for a reason and we'll see this role change as the truth comes to light, therefore meaning the casting of Chimon here will feel better (I hope I'm not wrong!).
Tumblr media
Anyway, back to Palm and I think his character is fascinating. He's obviously highly trained and yet his demeanour is shy and humble - is it an act and if so to what end?

Singularity
“What is this place?”  Morrigan asked in wonder.
“A singularity, created by Matilde (surname), sponsored by the honorable E.M. Saunders, a gift to the people of Nevermoor.” Squall spoke as if reciting from memory. “The Museum of Stolen Moments.”
It was beautiful. Morrigan was in awe of the scenes and stunning architecture. “Why did you want to show me this?”
“I heard your precious society” he paused to grimace “has been giving you a rather stilted version of wundersmith history.”
“They’re not my society!” Morrigan retorted, though she knew he was right. “But what do you mean?”
They’ve been teaching you the evils of wundersmiths, have they not?”
“But they are evil.”
“WE aren’t evil.”
“You are.”
“…touché.”  He wore an expression of mock hurt for a moment, before they both dissolved into laughter, all the tension dissipated.
A few minutes passed in awkward silence, before Morrigan asked a question. “What are these scenes?”
Squall pointed at a scene depicting a group of youths in a car “look closely” after a few seconds, she saw it.
“A crash” she looked to another scene of two men embracing, and again Morrigan saw what the museum really was. “They’re dying!”
“All real, if you must know”
Morrigan’s stomach turned “that… that is sick”
Squall chuckled “why yes, I suppose it is.” The sadistic smirk on his face turned a bit wry. “Part of being a wundersmith, is it?”
Morrigan panicked, she shouldn’t have gone anywhere with a murderer.
“No-NO!” Morrigan screamed, already running away. Into the crowded rush hour streets of downtown Nevermoor, where squall wouldn’t find her.
Chapter 2! How is it?
IT'S AWESOME!
The whole "we aren't evil." "No you are." exchange
I love this so much I'm so!!!!

“Is it okay to say that I’m jealous?” -Feyd for Usagi
Emotional starters - Accepting - @impercre
Tumblr media
Oh.
Of everything she expected him to say.. Admitting to jealousy hadn't even made the list. She had thought he'd laugh or roll his eyes. A princess and her worries. Engaged to a prince she had only just met, too sure to be joined in a marriage that was a good match for her kingdom and it's people, but not for her. There's no true suffering in her plight. Just a young woman expected to do her duty.
He bows to her then, extending his hand towards her as was proper and she's glad the music was too loud. It drowned out his words and would hide their conversation as he led her around the ballroom. A formal event, the engagement party of a soon to be queen to her future king. She had spent most of the night dancing with her betrothed but she had been glad when he left her to do.. Whatever princes did. She needed space and time to think away from him. It wasn't that she disliked him entirely but that..
She's spun and laughter bubbles from behind a sudden smile. "Is it okay.. But there's nothing to be jealous of.. I don't like him and I certainly don't love him. If everything goes according to plan.. One day I might but right now.. He's a bore and he stepped on my toes three times." Feyd was a brilliant dancer, all his battle training she believed. "He's not half as interesting as you."

The first episode of The Last of Us was a solid and wildly engaging piece of storytelling. It goes without saying that Pedro knocks it out of the park, carrying the emotional weight of the show, but Bella Ramsey, Merle Dandridge, and Anna Torv were fantastic and I am here for it ALL.
This show is going to scare the absolute FUCK out of me and also break me emotional on a fairly constant basis, and I am totally invested in the characters and their fates.
SO GOOD.
