Hey about the ackerbond thing, what if Levi's host doesn't trust him or is suspicious of him because she doesn't know him that well yet he insists on protecting her?
This was a little hard to write but I enjoyed it. Sorry this took so long! If I missed anything you were hoping for, you know the drill, shoot me a message. Thanks for your request and I hope you enjoy!!!!
For those who haven't read the first Headcanons for the Ackerman Bond, it's right here - Ackerman Bond Headcanons
Levi with his Ackerman Bond Host Who Doesn't him Headcanons:
Trigger Warning: semi bitter relationship between Levi and Y/n. Nothing too bad but just constant disagreements during the first bit. Please keep this in mind while you read.
Again with the confusion. What was going on with him? He swore that he was done getting tangled in situations where you clearly can handle yourself just fine. This was only becoming a distraction, a dangerous one at that. How was he suppose to focus on keeping his sqaud alive or process the meeting information when his mind kept constantly going back to you. His body kept twitching, needing to see you're safe and sound before it'll lessen the imaginary weight on his shoulders.
Levi knows nothing about you and vice-versa. So it feels wrong for him to be always with you. The two of you never talk because one of you is always pissed with the other. Part of him understands why you're always on edge around him. He would be acting the same if someone saved him and since then wouldn't leave your side. But at the same time, doesn't his constant assistance, whether you need it or not, do something to reduce that suspicious of him? Clearly not.
Levi's guilty. He wants to back off so bad, especially after you snapped at him. He feels like he's failed at protecting you as his host because you weren't happy like you were before this happened. Its silly, he shouldn't be feeling this way. Yet he keeps going out of his way to make sure that you're ok. Even if this leads to him being your enemy, its better than never seeing you again and losing .
Information was so limited about what the Ackerman Bond was so Levi had the same answer as you in most cases. And he's tried everything from ignoring you completely to going on missions without you but everything returns to square one.
Levi finally had enough and demanded to speak with you in his office. He had you both sitting down and made sure that you saw all of him and you let to show off you the way you are. Equals, no power balance stuff. "I'm sorry" he starts off and it's very quiet. This is a side of him you would never thought you would see. His intimidating aura is gone and replaced with a frustrated one that'sjust as scary. He's trying to find a way to explain this feeling/instinct so that you would understand.
Levi looked back up at you through his bangs. The idea he gave startled you as you weren't expecting him to actually have some sort of plan figured out to solve this. And you definitely weren't expecting him to ask to get to know you better. His reasoning being that since you two were 'bonded' together, you guys might as well learn how to trust and respect each other to make this less of a chore.
So that's what you guys ended up doing. Since work was always piling up, you guys agreed to work with each other in the evenings and talk then. The first night was awkward to say the least. Neither of you knew how to talk to each other causally and it took at least an hour and a half for you guys to relax enough to get rid of the tense atmosphere.
This was a start. You two had reached a mutual agreement with each other and the stress between you two has gone down a little. You've become a little more cautious knowing now how it affects him and Levi has been able to give you a little bit more space as a result. There are still times that you guys do bicker again but its resolved quicker compared to how it used to be. He wants to keep building up this relationship with you after seeing that you aren't just a ungrateful brat who he had to keep saving. You have his respect now and your slowly gaining his trust. Maybe this Bond won't be such a bad thing.

Here we go!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ping!
Ella froze when she heard the tone of her WhatsApp notifications. It was almost noon and though she'd never admit it, she'd been waiting to hear from Henry since the moment she'd opened her eyes in the morning. Hoping it was him, she took her phone and read the message.
Hello, Ella. This is Henry...the guy with the hard blow from the party last night.
Did he really think he had to remind her of who he was? That was damn cute.
I hope you're feeling better. I know I sound like a broken record but I can't say it often enough. I'm really, really sorry for hurting you.
...
Hey Henry. Thanks for checking on me. I'm much better, no headache anymore. No harm done, so I can easily forgive you.
....
He answered immediately.
That's a big relief! Has your brother already examined the bruise? Are you sure it's not a concussion and nothing's broken?
....
Yes, Alex stopped by on his way to work. I'm fine, just have to take it slow for the rest of the weekend. That's it. It looks much worse than it actually is.
....
Meaning I gave you a huge shiner?
...
Yeah... It's quite impressive. Wanna see?
....
Absolutely! Videocall?
....
Sure!
Videocall! Ella didn't see that coming. She had planned to send him a selfie. Video Call...before she was able to get into a panic her phone rang and she touched the green button to take the call, her heart racing like crazy. Henry's ridiculously handsome face with the friendly blue eyes and this very pretty nose, appeared on the screen instantly. She smiled at him sheepishly, suddenly very aware of the fact that she looked like shit with her bruise, without any makeup and with uncombed hair.
"Gosh, Ella....that looks bad. I can't believe you didn't pass out after that hit." he said horrified and ashamed at the sight of her bruised eye. His beautiful deep voice sounded hollow through the speakers of her phone. "Yeah...I know. But I'm the youngest of four. I'm able to take a lot of knocks." She laughed. "I feel terrible about this." he said, sounding serious.  "Please don't, Henry. It was an accident and I'm fine. I can cross off 'having a black eye' from my bucket list now. So I guess I have to thank you for this." She winked into the camera.  Henry chuckled. "You're welcome. And to be honest...it suits you, the dark blue and violet match your beautiful green eyes perfectly and you're still incredibly pretty."  "Oh...thanks." His words took her by surprise and she knew she was blushing which made her feel self-conscious. Her short answer to his compliment was followed by a long pause and Henry wondered if he had been too straightforward or too awkward. He wished he was just half as good at flirting as everyone considered him to be. "What about your back?" Ella said hastily to keep the conversation going. "My back is fine." "Really? You can be honest with me." "Really. I swear. Only a light red trace. It hardly hurts, it's really nothing serious. I can send you a back pic later." Henry grinned. Ella almost choked on the tea she was just sipping. Back pic - dick pic. The association hit her hard and of course she blushed like a shy wallflower. Again. It had always been like this. Her pale skin turned red for the most trivial reasons. Even at school when the teachers called on her she used to blush. And there was nothing she could do about it. She hated it. Coughing she gave Henry a funny look and he cursed internally for obviously making her feel uncomfortable with his stupid remark. Back pic, really, dumbass?
"Umm...yeah...why not. But maybe you still should put some ointment for burns on it." "Well...this is going to be a problem. I'm not that flexible. I doubt I can reach that area of my back and Kal won't be able to help." Henry replied, smiling. "Kal?" Ella was irritated. Who's Kal? His boyfriend? Oh my god. Is he gay? Am I making a complete fool of myself? "My dog. He's a clever boy but he can't do that." Henry laughed. "Oh. I see..." Ella let out a relieved snort. "Maybe your girlfriend can help you." She knew her attempt to find out if he was single was both obvious and pathetic. "I don't have a girlfriend." He said calmly, looking directly into the camera. "If I had, I wouldn't be chatting with you, clumsily trying to flirt, making you feel uncomfortable." He added with a shy, apologetic smile. Flirt? Ella was speechless for a moment. She started fiddling with her fingers, nervous all of the sudden. Good heavens...Henry Cavill is trying to flirt with me. "That's good to know. And you're not making me uncomfortable. On the contrary." she said softly, smiling back at him.
Henry didn't really know how to go on with the conversation but he didn't want their chat to end so soon either so he tried to change the subject. "That's an impressive pile of books there right behind you." "Yeah...when you take work home with you...you know how it is." Ella grinned,  turning around, giving the book on top a gentle tap. "Work? What do you do for a living?" "My sister and I run a little bookstore-cafe." "What's that? A bookstore and a cafe at the same time?" "Yeah, exactly. Like an ordinary bookstore but we also sell coffee, tea, cake, muffins and sandwiches and stuff." "Wow, that's cool. Downtown London?" "No. On the outskirts. In Uxbridge." "Is that where you live?" "Yes, I live in the flat above the store. What about you? Notting Hill? Belgravia?" "Kensington." Henry said laughing. "Of course." she joined in with a smirk. "Must be nice living there. Quite fancy I guess. Tell me all about it." And that's what he did.
Their easy going and very funny chat was interrupted by a ring at Ella's door a few minutes later. Ella made a face, giving Henry an apologetic look.  "That must be Katie, my sister. I told her what happened and she promised to supply me with some food. I hope for pizza and ice cream but I bet it's broth and fruits." She rolled her eyes. Henry's rumbling laugh echoed through the speakers. "Well, I better say good bye then, before her sisterly revenge hits me."  A second and a third impatient ring.  "Yeah. We better say goodbye. It was really good to talk to you Henry. Thanks for checking on me. And thanks for trying to flirt with me." She gave him a sweet wink and managed to blush only a little, her cheeks turning light pink. "You're welcome, Ella. It was my pleasure." "Bye." she said and the screen of his phone turned black.
It was my pleasure? What's wrong with you, Cavill?  Henry asked himself after the end of the call. He let his head sink down on the table top of his desk. You're welcome?  That really sounded smug as fuck. Not smooth, not witty....just smug and arrogant. Like he was doing her a favour by flirting with her. Your compensation for a huge black eye? Henry Cavill being socially awkward, trying to flirt clumsily for 15 minutes straight. Jackpot. You're welcome!
"I'm an idiot, Buddy." He said, sighing, turning to Kal. "I didn't even manage to ask her out on a date."
****
When Ella opened the door her sister swept into the room with all the vigour that was so typical for her. With her 31 years of age Katie was only 14 months older than Ella and she was the exact opposite to her. Where Ella was tall and lean, Katie was short and voluptuous. Well, Katie herself called it fat but Ella had always considered her sisters curvy bodily features pretty and enviable. She had the boobs and the butt Ella had prayed for throughout her puberty. She'd waited in vain for some curves to grow. She hardly needed an A cup and her hips were anything but round. "Don't be ungrateful." her sister said whenever Ella raised the topic. "You can eat as much as you want without gaining weight, you don't need a bra and you'll never have saggy boobs. And your ass is crisp like an apple. I would kill for a body like yours." It was hard to see it that way for Ella, when she had been called a twig and worse throughout her schooldays. "You have to eat, Darling, if you ever want to find a husband. You're thin as a rake." her late grandmother used to say with a deep sigh whenever she saw her granddaughter. The problem was, Ella did eat. A lot actually, but she never gained weight, though she really wanted to. Her ex Craig used to call her Twiggy and she'd hated it.
"Why did it take you so long to open the door?" Katie asked, placing a big bag on the kitchen table, running a hand over her round belly. She was six months pregnant with her first child. She turned around with a worried look on her doll-like face, that was framed by wavy, blonde hair. Katie had the same big green eyes like her sister but her face was heart-shaped with a sweet little nose and plump lips. A stark contrast to Ella's oval features with the grecian nose and the wide mouth. "Are you really ok? Alex said you'll be fine but you look a little flushed." "No, no...I'm good. I was just on a video call with Henry when you ringed." "Henry Cavill, huh?" Katie wiggled her eyebrows. "Yes. Can you believe it?" Ella giggled, feeling like a schoolgirl. "Hardly. I mean, how did you -Isabella Marianne Jacobs- manage to get into a close combat with Superman. Literally." "I really don't know. I went to this party with Jax and I sit at the bar hoping to maybe catch a little glimpse of Geralt of Rivia and the next thing I know is I almost get knocked out and the guy who makes me see stars is Henry fucking Cavill in person."
Katie laughed out loud, shaking her head in disbelief. She started unpacking the bag, placing various boxes on the table. "I made you some broth and here are some apples and pears and some oat cookies." "Broth, Katie? Really? I'm not sick." "A nice, tasty vegetable broth is good for anything." "Yeah...sure." Ella made a face. "But I was hoping for some food for the nerves. Chocolate, crisps, ice cream and lasagna or pizza for example." "Why?" Katie grinned. "What's wrong with your nerves? Did your little chat with Henry shake you up?" "Very funny."  "Why did he call you in the first place?" "He wanted to make sure I survived his punch. He's really a decent and nice man." "And the simple question if you're okay, left you so flushed?" Once again she was an open book to her big sister.   "He flirted with me, Katie!" Ella blurted out, turning tomato red. "Oh my god. How? What did he say? Spill it."
Ella gave her sister a little summary of their conversation, including all the details. Katie was not only her sister, she was her best friend besides Jax and there was no need to leave something aside. "Awww...this is so romantic." "Romantic? I don't know...maybe he was just trying to make me feel better. He has a reputation to lose." Ella was sceptical. "Nonsense! If it was an act he would have been much smoother, don't you think? After all he's an actor. He knows how to pretend a flirt." "And you really think a man like him isn't a smooth flirt in real life?" "Well, he obviously is not. Even famous people can be shy or insecure, Ella." "Yeah, sure..." "Do you think he's really going to send you that....back pic?" Katie grinned. "I hope so." Ella answered sniggering. They kept talking about Henry for a full hour, giggling and laughing. Ella felt like a teenager again, drooling over her newest crush.
After her sister had left, Ella was sitting on her couch, eating her broth, thinking about Henry. Was it really possible that he was interested in her? And maybe even more important, was she seriously interested in him? Sure, he was incredibly handsome and attractive with an interesting personality. Of course it was flattering that he flirted with her and of course it boosted her ego. But what if he'd really ask her out. Would she say yes? Was she ready?
She hadn't dated anyone since she and Craig had decided to split up and go separate ways a year ago and she wasn't sure if she was okay with getting emotionally involved with somebody again.
A few months ago she had kind of a fling with Jackson's older brother Hunter. It was something she used to call friends with benefits, Hunter preferred the term fuck buddies, Jax called it booty calls. Whatever it was, it was strictly physical and it had come to an end when Hunter had to move to Berlin for a job. She was sad when he had to leave because the sex really had been great. He had shown her a side of physical love she'd never known before. Her sex life with Craig had been okay. Not more, not less. The usual stuff, mostly vanilla and it had been satisfying, she'd never asked for more. But Hunter was anything but Vanilla. He had awoken this naughty, dark side of Ella, taking her sexuality to the next level.
The sound of an incoming WhatsApp message interrupted her thoughts. She took her phone and saw it was a text from Henry. Her heart skipped a beat when she started reading.
Hey Ella, here's the promised piece of evidence.
Tumblr media
Ella gasped when she saw the picture of Henry's bare back that was taken in front of a mirror. This man was built like a greek god. But he was right, there was only a light burn along his spine. A light red trace that didn't look too bad.
Thanks. Looks good. That's a relief.
Just seconds after she'd sent her answer her mobile rang. Henry. Now her heart started racing.
"Hello?" "Hey, it's Henry again." "Yeah, I know. Hi." Ella was glad it wasn't a video call this time because -of course- she was blushing again just for the sound of his voice. "What's up?" "Well, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed our chat earlier. And I was thinking and wondering if you might want to talk to me again and if you maybe even want to see me again...all of me. Not only my back. And...yeah...what I'm trying to ask is if you would go out with me. On a date." "Um...yes...sure. That would be nice." Ella said without hesitation. Seemingly her brain had erased all doubts about dating someone from her mind successfully. "Really? Okay. Great! So what about dinner on Saturday? Gonna pick you up at seven?" "Saturday it is." Ella said. "Where do we go?" "What about Italian?" Henry suggested. "Oh yes. I love Italian food. There are a few good restaurants here in Uxbridge." Henry hesitated for a moment. "I'd rather take you to a place I know in Notting Hill. It's really nice and cosy." "Ok. Great. Do I have to dress up?" "Well it's not the Ritz. It's sophisticated but not too fancy. You're going to like it." "Good. I'm gonna text you my address."
A/N: Shoutout to @multiyfandomgirl40 and @firebenderwolf for making me do a taglist. I'm still in awe that people enjoy the fics I write. Be sure to check out their fics (or re-read them), you won't regret it! Grammatical errors are to be expected. Spanish Translations below, let me know if there are any errors.
Characters/Pairing(s): Sad Eyes x Reader ☆ OCs (readers best friends)
Summary: Wine just brings out a different side of (Y/N). Not that her boyfriend is complaining.
Warnings: fluff, language, references to smut, tipsy reader
Word Count: 1638
- ♤ - ♡ - ◇ - ♧ -
The Mean Girls credits rolled onto the screen, so (Y/N) tossed the remote to Kyra as she got up and walked into the kitchen. Opening up the fridge, she looked through the selection Maelyse had brought with her. Unsure of what to get, Joy popped up beside her and grabbed the Merlot. (Y/N) shrugged her shoulders and decided to grab the rest of the snacks instead.
Tomorrow, the tight knit group of friends would officially have a wife among them. They were all excited for the big day, especially the bride to be Maelyse. The past few months had all of them busy. However, through it all, they all remained level-headed and it solidified Mae's choice in choosing them to be her bridesmaids. Instead of going to celebrate her last night of being a fiancé out in the city, Mae decided on having a quiet night in.
Each of them had their own rooms within the suite, but chose to all camp out in the living room for the night.
"How are you feeling?" (Y/N) asked Mae as she placed the snacks on the coffee table that had been pushed to the side.
She smiled, "great."
Joy shook her head, "and to think you getting married is because Scott sent a text to the wrong number.
"I wouldn't say it was wrong," Mae flashed her engagement ring, "after all he ended up with the right woman."
(Y/N) and Joy both awed, while Kyra scoffed.
"Okay, enough of the cheesiness, y'all know I'm lactose intolerant," everyone laughed at her, "let's give a toast for wrong numbers."
"To wrong numbers!"
They all raised their wine glasses, clinked them together and took a drink. When (Y/N) placed her glass down, she noticed a notification pop up on her screen. With the quick flash she smiled down at her screensaver. A photo of her and Jose sitting on a mat with a picnic basket and a bouquet of daffodils beside them. (Y/N) leaning back into his embrace and Jose wrapping his arms around her.
He had set his phone up to "capture the moment", he had told her. (Y/N) didn't really suspect anything of it considering she loved a good photo op. She remembered that day so clearly, as it was when Jose officially asked her to be his girlfriend. Bringing the bouquet of daffodils to symbolise the new beginning for both of them.
Kyra noticed (Y/N) staring at her phone and nudged her shoulder playfully, "is somebody missing their novio?"
"Shut up," she replied.
Mae laughed, "he's coming tomorrow, right?"
(Y/N) nodded, "yeah, he'll be there."
She was happy that Jose would join her. It would be the first event they'd be attending as a couple – Santos parties and dinners with her family didn't really count. Plus she was extremely excited to see him dressed up.
Joy smiled and grabbed some Doritos to munch on, "Nana Julie is gonna be disappointed when she finds out you're in a relationship. She's been trying to set you up with Carlos for years."
"Accepting the ring pop in front of her was the beginning of her attempts of getting the two of you together," Mae piped up.
(Y/N) rolled her eyes, "we were seven."
Kyra smirked, "my favourite part was when you found out he gave Vivian a ring pop the day before and told him you weren't a homewrecker," she laughed.
"That just showed how committed I was, even back then," she replied, "I kinda felt bad after I stuck the ring pop in his hair. He had to shave it all off 'cause Nana Julie ended up giving him a bald spot when she ripped it out."
They continued to drink, eat and talk. Laughing at the memories they created with each other and cringing when they talked about their awkward teenage years. All of which they agreed they were happy they were no longer living through it.
On the other side of town, Jose was chilling in his apartment. He wasn't really doing anything, other than making sure his outfit for Mae's wedding was put away nicely. He had just come back from his mother's house 'cause he needed help ironing it. While she was ironing, she kept talking about how proud she was of him for finding (Y/N). He laughed when she began to hint at grandchildren. His response was if it happened, it happened. Although, he already knew that (Y/N) was the only woman he ever pictured having kids with.
Closing his closet door, he moved from his bedroom into the hallway. His mind on (Y/N) and hoping she was having a blast with her girls. When he began dating her, her friends were a bit apprehensive due to his association with the Santos. However, when they realised he actually cared for (Y/N) they eased up. Now, whenever he saw them there wasn't any awkwardness.
Before he reached the kitchen, he felt a vibration against his thigh. Confused, he pulled out his phone and saw (Y/N)'s contact name pop up. With a smile, he quickly answered, "Hola, querida."
"Ooooh did you hear that girls? Did. You. Fucking. Hear. My. Man? I don't think you did. He spoke Spanish! Fuck he sounds so sexy –" was all Jose heard before a bunch of giggles muffled his girlfriend's voice. He couldn't help but chuckle, quickly figuring out that he was on speaker and (Y/N) was tipsy (if her slightly slurred rambling was anything to go by). A loud shushing noise was followed by more rambling, "– like… he's just so ‐‐ urg! He's a snack… no h-he's more than that he's breakfast… and lunch… and dinner. Yeah! Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Wait, no… uh, what's that place – buffet! He's. A. Fucking. Buffet! Yes, he is. And I'll gladly eat all day long."
Jose smirked, "you're everything and more bebe."
"Oh shit, I forgot I was on the phone," she giggled, "hey, baby! I love you!" She let out a heavy sigh, "I miss you! Can I see you? I wanna see you."
Never being able to deny her of anything, he quickly ended their call and switched to FaceTime. He only waited for a few seconds before (Y/N)'s face popped up, practically covering the screen. Jose laughed as she grinned widely, before shuffling back allowing him to see her surrounded by her best friends. All of whom were wearing matching pink pajama sets, except for Maelyse whose set was white. They all waved, Jose nodding back at them.
"Isn't he handsome?" (Y/N) glanced over her shoulder, "and he's mine." She sighed happily focusing back on the screen. "I love you!"
He smiled, "I love you too, bebe." His eyes spotted some wine glasses in the background with snacks. "You seem to be having a great time."
"The bestest time ever!" She cheered, the girls cheering alongside her. "We're getting wine drunk and eating all the snacks. But, I wanna see you," she pouted.
"Don't make that face," he sighed, "you're seeing me now, bebe."
"It's not the same… I want you here!" She huffed.
He raised an eyebrow, "(Y/N)."
"Ooooh, you called me (Y/N)." Her eyes widened, "you must mean business," she giggled. "I like it when you say my name… especially when you're –"
"Baby," this time his eyes widened.
The girls in the background fell over each other laughing, while (Y/N) looked at them confused. This made Joy laugh harder. Maelyse leaned over and whispered in her ear. (Y/N) bit her lip, causing Kyra to wrap her arms around her shoulders and scream about 'the baby not being as innocent as everyone thought'. Shaking her head, she turned back to the screen and shrugged her shoulders.
"I meant when you're sleepy 'cause your voice gets even sexier," she explained, "but… yeah, when we're doing stuff too. I really like that part."
The way she said it so nonchalantly made Jose snort and shake his head. His girl was something else. The camera shifted to show off a pile of blankets and pillows, before revealing her nude painted toenails. He patiently waited until (Y/N)'s face came back on the screen and once it did, she was laying on a bed.
"I can't wait to see you all dressed up," she commented, "like – fuck, you're already the sexiest man. But… imagining you in a suit and tie is doing things to me."
He smirked, "is that right?"
Biting her lip, she nodded, "yeah… a whole lot of things," she glanced over her phone before back at the screen, "after the wedding is when the real fun starts."
"I look forward to it."
"You should 'cause I brought your favourite set with me, so I can wear it underneath my dress."
"Baby, don't do that to me," he groaned.
"Sorry not sorry," she giggled.
They chatted a bit more until Mae called out for (Y/N) that it was time to say goodbye and get back to celebrating. At the same time Oso gestured towards Jose that he was needed. With a reluctant sigh from both of them, they smiled at each other.
"Looks like we've both gotta go, querida," he told her, "but I'll see you tomorrow, okay? Do you need me to bring anything to the hotel?"
"Can I have some (fast food) for breakfast?"
He laughed, "of course baby, anything else?"
She shook her head, "no that's it," she blew him a kiss, "I really gotta go now 'cause I can hear Mae calling my full name," she huffed, "I love you!"
"I love you too, baby."
Once they hung up, they both had the same thought; morning couldn't come soon enough.
Chapter 3 is finally done! Sorry it took longer - finals week happened and it was a harder chapter to write for some reason. I'm excited to finish this story though - we're half-way through :)
Chapter 3: Lighting the flame
Christopher met his friends outside, where they piled into a carriage and set off for the Devil Tavern. The atmosphere between them was still tense; James and Matthew, sitting across from him, were quiet. Christopher wished, as he so often did, that he understood people better. He hated it when they all fought, and now it was partly his fault and he didn’t know how to fix it. Thankfully, James took the initiative.
“Kit,” he began, “we’re sorry for being so confrontational. It’s only you have to understand how it looks from our perspective. Grace’s actions, even if she regrets them, caused a great deal of pain.” James looked troubled.
“Thomas shared some of what you all learned yesterday talking to Jesse,” Matthew said softly. “About how bad things were for her with Tatiana. And it…well I still don’t trust her but it sounds like she’s trying to be – to be better. And I out of everyone should be sympathetic to that.” His hand moved unconsciously to his jacket. He had stopped carrying a flask everywhere but after so many years of drinking, it was still a reflex to reach for the alcohol.
James seemed to notice this motion, and clasped his parabatai’s shoulder briefly in support, then returned his attention to Christopher. “I suppose what I’ll say is that I cannot soon forget what Grace has done, and I prefer to avoid her,” James said carefully, “but I – none of us – should be trying to control who you spend time with Kit. I am sorry. If you trust her, then we shall trust you.”
“Oh, jolly good,” Christopher said, immensely relieved. He hated conflict, especially with his friends. “I am sorry that I didn’t think to mention her helping. She’s the first friend I’ve ever made.”
His friends all looked suddenly gut-punched for some reason. “Kit, do you not think we’re friends?” Matthew asked, appearing quite distressed.
“Of course we are! Aren’t we?” Christopher was, for a second time that evening, horribly confused.
“But you just said –” James began, looking stricken.
“Do you mean she’s the first friend that you personally have made, on your own, Kit?” Thomas asked, understanding Christopher best as usual.
“Precisely!” Christopher said, then realized, “Ah, I understand now how that sounded. I meant that – well, I’m related to two of you and we all just sort of fell in together didn’t we? I have never made a friend on my own.” The rest of the Merry Thieves relaxed visibly.
“Fair enough,” Matthew said, looking relieved. “Honestly Kit, Grace Bla – sorry , Cartwright – out of everyone you could choose for a friend.” He shook his head but there was a teasing glint in his eye.
“She’s really a wonderful lab partner!” Christopher assured them cheerfully. “She’s been organizing everything and making an inventory. And she had a wonderful insight the other day about this reaction with sulfuric acid.”
Thomas shifted on the seat next to Christopher as he said “I never would have expected scientific curiosity from Grace of all people, but she was right at home in that laboratory today.”
“Honestly, it took me a second to recognize her – wearing a dark dress, and those ridiculous goggles that you also wear in the lab,” Matthew said, gesturing at Christopher.
“They may not be fashionable, but they are very important as protective gear,” Christopher told him.
Matthew shuddered slightly but smiled good-naturedly as he said, “And that is why I will never pursue science. Terrible field for the fashion-minded.” This started him on a wild story about finding a new waistcoat earlier that week. Christopher was quite satisfied that peace had been restored, and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the night with his friends.
_________________________________________________________
The following Wednesday, Christopher was even more eager than usual to get to Grosvenor Square – Henry was due to arrive back in London that morning. He was keen to get Henry’s thoughts on several projects, especially the runed guns and the fire messages.
Christopher started the morning by testing another rune combination on a message. This attempt ended, as many did, in a small explosion. He was still putting out a fire on the lab table when Grace arrived for the day. She greeted him briefly before starting to set up a reaction flask. During her organization of the lab she had come across a vial with some mysterious white powder. Christopher had no idea what it was, so they decided it would be an intriguing exercise for her to determine the contents.
Soon after Grace’s arrival, a humming noise sounded, then a whistling, signaling that the elevator down to the lab was in use. Christopher hurried over as the doors opened. “Welcome back, Henry!” he said, grinning.
Henry looked just the same as always, with perhaps a bit more gray in his hair after the stress of the past few months. “Kit, my boy!” he greeted as he maneuvered his Bath chair out of the elevator and towards the lab table. “How are things going? Any progress on those guns with the pithos? And you must help me examine this sample of water I brought back from Alicante, I wonder if we could try using it in another version of demon repelling ointment. Being around so many wards, it may be imbued with some demon-repelling properties.” He reached the work table and paused as he finally noticed Grace standing there. Henry looked bewildered and Christopher struggled to remember whether he had mentioned Grace in his letter to Henry. He was fairlysure that he had.
“Hello!” Henry said to her pleasantly, “You’re the one with the demon powers that was briefly engaged to my son. Gladys, yes?” Well, letter or otherwise, at least Henry remembered her.
“Grace, actually,” she replied, looking tense, her posture stiff. “I do want to apologize again for…everything.”
Henry waved off her concern and said, “It all ended alright didn’t it? Charles Buford will find someone else. And Kit mentioned you’ve been a great help in the lab recently!”
Good, Christopher thought, I did remember to include that in the letter.
“I would actually be quite interested to hear about your power and how it worked. Especially through a bracelet, fascinating!” Henry continued as he maneuvered towards the rack of chemicals.
Grace appeared exceedingly uncomfortable, but quickly warmed up to Henry throughout the day as he described various project ideas to her and took a look at her reactions. By that evening, when all three were involved in a lengthy discussion about runes and the application of runes to invention, it was as if Grace had always been part of the team. Christopher was delighted anew that Grace understood both he and Henry in a way that very few others did.
They finally finished for the night after Charlotte had called down the stairs three times with increasing insistence about coming up for dinner. Grace left to catch a carriage home with a smile on her face. Christopher wished briefly that she could stay longer, but he was comforted by the fact that she would return in the morning.
_________________________________________________________
“Hullo Grace!” Christopher said happily as she entered the lab early the next day. He then bent back down to examine a glass slide under the microscope. Henry was occupied entertaining some visitors with Charlotte, but Christopher was already hard at work. “You must come take a look at this sample of water from Lake Lyn that Henry brought,” he told her. It was fascinating watching the microorganisms move about in the droplet under the lens. When Grace did not immediately respond, he looked up and actually got a good look at her face. “I say, is something wrong, Grace? You’re a bit –” He was about to say ‘splotchy’, for her normally pale face was quite red in parts. He caught himself at the last second however, remembering his mother saying that a gentleman should never remark on a lady’s less-than-favorable appearance. “You look upset,” he said instead. She was not her normal cool and collected self.
He thought that Grace would brush off his concern, and she indeed stiffened and started to turn away. Then she met his gaze and her shoulder slumped in resignation. “I encountered Charles on my way in,” she explained.
“Ah. I forgot that he would be returning with Henry,” Christopher said, wincing. “Things are still awkward after ending the engagement then?”
“More than awkward,” she answered, expression still pinched. “He is still extremely upset that I manipulated his mind. Said I’d made a fool of him and he doesn’t want me in his house.” She set her coat and hat down on the stool with more force than strictly necessary.
Christopher frowned and said, “Technically it’s Henry and Charlotte’s house.”
A faint smile rose on Grace’s lips. “That’s precisely what I told him, and I mentioned that I worked with Henry just yesterday. He then called you both ‘trusting fools’ and made some…unflattering statements about my personage.”
“Well perhaps if we give him some more time, he’ll come round!” Christopher said optimistically. “I suppose it’s easier for me to say since you only used your power on me once or twice compared to the many more times you used it on him.”
Grace looked at him, pale brows drawn together in puzzlement. “I never used my power on you, Christopher,” she said slowly.
Christopher was wholly astonished by her statement. “You – never? Really?” he asked, mentally reeling. “What ho! But the night you came to the laboratory and helped me figure out the pithos I – are you sure?”
Grace shook her head. “Never. I’m completely sure,” she said firmly. “I would have apologized if I had, I –” she stared at him, looking almost indignant. “You really invited me here, have been working with me, and all this time you though I had manipulated you that night? And never gave you a formal apology?” she asked incredulously.
“When you asked about joining me in the lab that first day, you apologized for everything again. I assumed that included any time you used your power on me!” Christopher said, thoughts racing. He had been so eager to help her that night. Although now that he thought about it, they had discussed a lot of science, which he now knew Grace was genuinely interested in. “Why didn’t you?” he asked her, very curious.
Grace hesitated before saying, “I didn’t need to. You weren’t bothered by my being there and you were happy to show me around.” Something flickered in her pale eyes. “I never liked using my power when I could avoid it. I suppose because I knew that it was wrong,” she added. She looked as if she might say something else, but at that moment a whistling noise from the elevator indicated that Henry was on his way down to the lab.
They were soon absorbed in experimenting and discussing theories but at points Christopher found his focus drifting back to their conversation, and even farther back to that first night in the lab. It seemed like Grace had used her power on nearly everyone at some point, yet incredibly, she had never used it on him despite numerous opportunities. Christopher didn’t know what to make of that.
_________________________________________________________
It was just Christopher and Henry in the lab the following day. Grace was training with Jesse, and then planned to take a tour around the city with her brother, Lucie, and Ariadne (who was apparently going by Kamala these days). Christopher could never be bored working with Henry but after having Grace’s constant companionship for nearly a month it was…strange, to be working with only Henry and not her.
The day’s work proved incredibly successful, however. Upon Henry’s suggestion, Christopher added a bridge rune to the fire communication rune he had been tinkering with for months. He was thrilled to observe the message burn up and reform a few feet away. Henry, delighted, helped him replicate the results numerous times to prove that it was a repeatable phenomenon. Henry demonstrated it for a startled Charlotte (she had been interrupted in the middle of writing a letter in her office). She beamed, proud of them both, giving Henry a congratulatory kiss.
Christopher could not wait to share the good news with Grace. He wished she had been there to see it the first time, but no matter – there would be plenty of time to demonstrate it tomorrow.
He and Henry spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get the messages to travel farther than a few feet. Although foiled in these attempts, the breakthrough left them both very pleased as they finished for the day.
_________________________________________________________
Christopher was waiting at the entrance for Grace the next morning, eager to share the news. She looked startled to find him right behind the door as it opened, which he supposed was unusual given that they always met down in the lab. She had barely finished saying good morning before he could not contain his excitement and exclaimed, “You must come see the breakthrough Henry and I made yesterday, Grace! We’re so close to having a working fire-message!” He caught her arm and hurried her to the stairs down to the lab. She seemed a bit disoriented by his sudden enthusiasm but listened intently with a bemused smile as he explained the thought process behind the rune combination they had tried.
They reached the work table and Christopher quickly traced out the new rune. The paper burned up and reformed a few feet in front of them. When it reappeared, Grace grinned widely. “Incredible!” she declared, and she snatched the paper to study the rune. It occurred to Christopher that Grace had a very nice smile. She normally had a serious face, but smiles had become more frequent as the weeks had passed.
“What have you tried adding to this so far?” she asked. Christopher grabbed his notebook and they reviewed what he had recorded the previous day.
“Do you mind if I try some things?” Grace asked. “I’ve been studying that book on runes that Henry gave me – I think I may have a few ideas.”
“By all means!” Christopher told her, delighted. “I could use a break from runes after all the work yesterday. I think I’ll experiment with the Lake Lyn water today and try a demon-repelling ointment again.”
“All right, then,” she said, and set to work with a determined expression.
Later that afternoon, Henry already finished for the day and off to some important dinner, Christopher was checking the now-complete inventory list. “Blast!” he said softly, then called over to Grace, “Do you remember seeing nightshade anywhere when you were organizing?”
She pursed her lips in thought, then shook her head. “No, none,” she answered.
“I suppose I’ll be taking a trip to the Shadow Market tonight then,” Christopher said. He was determined to try combining some nightshade extract with the new demon-repelling ointment he was developing.
“The Shadow Market?” Grace queried, eyebrows raised in interest. “Do you go there often? I wanted to go before when I was looking for something to help Jesse, but I was never confident that I could find my way around.”
“It’s a wonderful place! I have to go fairly often for ingredients that are, er, not strictly approved by the Clave,” he explained. “Oh!” he said, struck by an obvious thought, “would you like to accompany me tonight?”
“I would love to,” Grace said, looking excited. She sent a letter to Jesse to inform him of the change in plans, and eagerly questioned Christopher about various aspects of the Market.
They each wrapped up their work as the sun began to set, the changing sky visible from a high window in the basement. Christopher was locating his coat and hat when he realized he should ask Grace about weapons. It was unlikely they’d face any demons in the carriage or Shadow Market, but it was good to be prepared. She had daggers on her already, but he offered her a seraph blade in addition. Ready, with ingredient list in hand, the set out to the carriage.
Christopher offered Grace an arm up, then followed her in. Their knees brushed together as he settled on the seat opposite Grace and the carriage began moving. Christopher noticed that she looked somewhat flushed. “Would you like the window open?” he asked. “You look a bit warm.”
“No, I’m perfectly comfortable, thank you,” she said, appearing discomposed. “What are you hoping to accomplish with the nightshade that you’ll be getting?” she asked.
Christopher happily launched into a lengthy explanation of his thought process and the previous attempts at demon-repelling ointment, and the discussion lasted them all the way to the Shadow Market.
Rumors pt 2
Ship: Yeosang x Named female character (Jae Hwa)
 College AU. ‘Bad’ girl x shy studious Yeosang.
 Some fluff, some angst, mostly slice of life, a bit chaotic
 Warnings: overly controlling parents, rumors, cursing, motorcycle.
 Word count: 2.8k
 A/N: this is a short series. I hope you all enjoy it. I’m trying out different writing styles as I get back into writing so I hope you enjoy.
 All of this is pure fiction.❤
Tumblr media
She expected to hear from Yeosang, or to see him somewhere at the university over the next week. When she didn't she decided it was best to approach his friends.
"Excuse me, do you know if Yeosang is alright?" Jae approached two of Yeosangs friends in the dining hall, at the usual table. They looked at her in slight shock.
"Yeah, he got in trouble for who knows what now." San shrugged.
"Apparently he got home late, and they grounded him." Wooyoung added.
"What about his schooling?"
"Thats where they got weird. They contacted the professors and got some work packets or some crap" Wooyoung rolled his eyes.
"Oh" she mumbled, as she sat on an empty chair at their table.
"Why do you ask?" She could see mischievous looks in their eyes as they looked at her.
"Well, long story short. He helped me catch my dog, who was running around the park, and we started talking. Then his mom called because he was late. I took him home, gave him my number. Then he disappeared" she rambled, her thoughts piling on top of one another. This was her fault.
"They took his phone. His parents are intense. They treat him like he's 10, instead of an adult" Wooyoung leaned back on his chair, folding his arms, intrigued by the soft 'bad girl' in front of him.
"How do you guys talk to him then"
"Secret messages" San lifted his eyebrows, then laughed, his dimples highlighting his face.
"He messages us through our gaming systems. His parents don't know how to block that"
"Can you tell him I'm sorry"
"I can do you one better"
"What do you mean?"
The two boys just smiled at each other, mischief glinting in their eyes.
"Meet us at 10 tonight, at the park by his house"
"Why?"
"We're sneaking him out."
The park was dark, it seemed as if the light posts had burned out. She pulled up and parked next to the only car in the small parking lot, three figures stood in the dark.
"Did you have to bring your motorcycle?" Wooyoung asked, as she took off her helmet, and strapped it to the back.
"It's the only thing I have" she responded, placing her hand on her hip. "So how are we doing this?"
"Well you are going to help by being the distraction" Seonghwa nodded
"What kind of distraction?" Jae asked. Her eyes wide.
"Well maybe it's a good thing you brought your bike" San's eyes darkened, as he eyed her motorcycle, and shrugged the bag he was carrying off his shoulder. Her heartbeat picked up.
"I'm not wrecking my bike!"
"We will help you fake it." Wooyoung unzipped the bag, as San handed it to him. She felt like these guys were ganging up on her. Why did she come? Why was she trusting these guys she barely knew? She took a deep breath, and gathered her thoughts. This was for Yeosang, the one she got in trouble. The only guy who hadn't written her off. Maybe these guys weren't so bad, they are Yeosang's friends.
"My baby better not get damaged. I just paid it off!" Her voice was hard, along with her gaze.
"Your bike won't have any harm. We will just lay it down next to the curb in front of Yeosang's house." San held up his pinky, as if he was promising her to keep her bike safe.
"I don't like this idea" her arms folded over her chest, as her eyes narrowed.
"Look, do you want to help Yeosang escape or not?" Wooyoung approached her, she sighed and reluctantly nodded. "Good, now take off your jacket."
"What?"
"Just take off your jacket. It will help with the ruse" Seonghwa smiled. His smile, genuine. She shrugged her jacket off, and watched as Wooyoung opened a jar full of red liquid.
The three boys started smearing fake blood all over her right arm, and over the slits and holes in her jeans, mostly on her right side.
As they informed her of their oddly concocted idea for Yeosangs break out. They told Yeosang to find a clip of screeching brakes to play loudly upstairs, then to flash the lights twice, at which point Jae, who would be out on the curb, would scream. Knowing how Yeosangs parents act they would come out front at which point they would sneak him out the back of the house.
Jae stood at the end of a driveway, Seonghwa and San had helped lay her motorcycle down a few feet away then ran. She watched the 2nd story window. She saw the light flicker twice, she let a blood curdling scream, bending over holding her 'bloodied' arm to her chest, along with her helmet. A few moments later the front door opened.
Jae started cursing, and acting just as the boys had coached her.
"Did you see that jerk! He ran me off the road!" She yelled.
"Well what do you expect riding a death trap!" Yeosang's mothers judgemental voice rang in her ears. The boys were right, Yeosangs mother was a piece of work.
"I wasn't in the wrong!" Jae defended herself. "I was just doing the speed limit, when that car came out of nowhere and side swiped me. Did no one see it?"
"Do you even live in this neighborhood?" Her words sounded like venom, Jae could feel the judging eyes, she always did.
"I was visiting a friend." Jae was appalled, they hadn't even blinked an eye at her 'injuries' nor had they asked if she was okay. She couldn't act any longer, she shook her head, and grimaced. "If you guys won't help me, I'll take myself to the hospital" Jae put her helmet on faking gasps of pain. She raised up her bike, and started it.
How Yeosang, one of the sweetest people she had ever met, had come from that toxic household she couldn't understand. She sped off towards the park. Hoping she had given them enough time to help Yeosang escape. She parked her bike, and took off her helmet, watching around her. She saw four shadows approaching warily, along the tree line.
"Oh my God! Jae are you okay?" Yeosangs voice was concerned, as he hurried towards her.
"I'm fine" she stated, leaning against her bike.
"You don't look fine, your arm, your leg! We need to get you to the ER." His panicked face only seemed to grow in worry as he continued to analyze Jae.
"Did you jerks not tell him anything?" Jae shook her head, standing up and walking over to the hood of the car where her jacket sat.
"Well we told him you were helping us out." San started.
"We just spaced the whole, covering you in blood and pretending you got into an accident." Wooyoung finished.
"It's all fake, don't worry, Yeosang." Jae started rubbing her arm trying to get off the fake blood, it didn't budge or smear. "What did you guys put on me?"
It turns out San is a theater major. Which is why he had fake blood. However he had mixed too much coloring into it, so he insisted that they should all return to his small two bedroom apartment, which he and his roommateYunho shared. That's where he had the items to take off the fake blood. The apartment was small, yet comfortable. Jae had been guided into the small bathroom by San, who showed her the cleanser, and how to use it. Jae took off her shirt, so she was in her tank top, staring at herself in the mirror over the sink as she tried to scrub off all the fake blood, with the stage makeup remover. There was a knock at the slightly opened door.
"Hey, thanks for the help tonight" Yeosang said as he poked his head in.
"You're welcome. I knew you told me about your parents. I never expected them to be so harsh." She ran the rag under hot water, to start rinsing off her skin, which was mostly free of the fake blood.
"You met my mom" he stated as he closed the toilet lid and sat down watching her.
"She's a piece of work. She never even asked if I was OK. Just kept going on about how my motorcycle was a death trap. "
"She really hates motorcycles."
"I can tell. But answer me this. How did you end up so sweet when she is just…. Ugh" Jae threw her head back.
"My dad is quite nice, but he does whatever she says. He says it's out of love, but I think he's just as scared of her as the rest of us are." His shoulders slumped, as he stared at the floor. Jae watched his actions. He reminded her of the hurt animals at the shelter, who couldn't understand why they had been mistreated. Her heart broke for him, no one should ever feel that way, especially from a parent.
"I'm sorry Yeosang." Jae started with a sigh,, "She's just so infuriating, I can see the toxicity. I know this is hard for you" she grabbed the hand towel and patted her arm to dry it. He looked up at her then stared at the wall in front of him.
"It is hard. I need out. This was the last straw. I've been practically imprisoned for the past week." His head dropped into his hands. "I'm going to stand up to them. I'm moving out. I have to. I can't live like this."
Jae wanted to respond to his sudden resolve, but  she didn't know what to say to confirm his feelings, nor how to comfort him. So she walked over, crouched down, and hugged him. He immediately returned the embrace. She held him, until her legs started to cramp, from her awkward position between the toilet and bathtub. She pulled back, and stood up then softly took his cheeks in her hands, encouraging him to look her in the eyes.
"This won't be easy, but I'm here for you. So are your amazing friends. We want you to be happy." She rubbed her thumb softly over his birthmark. "I like your birthmark." Her thoughtful words shocked him slightly. He was always so self conscious about his birthmark.
"You don't have to lie." he muttered, as he softly grabbed her hand, stopping her movements.
"I'm not. I really like your birthmark. It brings a light to your eyes."
He just shook his head, and dropped her hand.
"Yeosang look here" , she said, turning around. There on her left shoulder blade was a large brown birthmark. It looked almost like a nimbus cloud. She had a crescent moon tattooed above it, and the cloud looked like it was raining stars down.
"Yeosang, when I was young I always got made fun of for my birthmark. I hated it. I hated wearing tank tops, I hated swimming, because I knew everyone would see it." She paused and looked at the ground. "Then I got older, and a friend pointed out that it looked like a cloud. As I learned to love me I decided to enhance its beauty without covering it, so I got the moon and stars tattooed. Our birthmarks, and scars are beautiful. They tell stories, and make us unique." She smiled as she turned, looking at the artwork on her shoulder in the mirror as best as possible.
"Do you have any other tattoo's?" He asked. She nodded.
"I have two others, both incorporate some scars" her smile, and gaze seemed distant.
"Can I see those?" He asked. She smiled at him, and cooked her head to the side.
"No" she responded, as she grabbed her shirt off the counter and slipped it back on. She then walked out of the bathroom, making a sure end to this conversation.
So the rumors he heard of her having tattoos were true. However he doubted that she had a death tarot card tattoo, or that she had a prison tattoo with how cute the one on her shoulder is.
That night Yeosang made plans with the group on how he was going to stand up to his parents. Whom they were sure, were losing their minds being as he had successfully gotten out.
The next day was Saturday, and Jae was working her shift in the back of the shelter. Her text tone went off as she filled another bowl of food. It was an unknown number
-Jae
-What are you doing?
-Want to come to the library. I need your help
-Oh btw it's Wooyoung
-Sure, the one on campus. I'll see you there at 5
-I get off at 4. Can I just meet you at the library at 5"
He left her hanging with no response.
-How did you get my number?
When she arrived at the library on campus she was greeted by a quiet Wooyoung.
"What do you need help with?" She asked, only to be grabbed by her wrist, and dragged into the two story library. She tried pulling free, with no luck. Wooyoung stopped below the balcony on the second story.
"But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Yeosang is the sun" Wooyoung cooed as Yeosang stepped into view from the second story of the library.
"What are you going on about now woo?" Yeosang groaned.
"He speaks: O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art As glorious to this night, being o'er my head As is a winged messenger of heaven"
"How can you memorize part of Romeo and Juliet, and yet you can't remember any of your biology class?"
"Well i'm trying to woo girls. I'll memorize anything for that." Wooyoung winked at Jae, she just rolled her eyes.
"You are crazy if you think standing below someone and quoting Shakespeare will woo them, Wooyoung" she responded, shaking her head.
"Oh, Jae you're here" Yeosang looked over the railing with a smile. "I'd much rather talk to you" , his eyes shining.
"I'm the one that asked you to come over here!" Woo argued.
"She's prettier than you"
"Hey!"
"Can someone just tell me why am I here?" Jae laughed. Wooyoung's smile became mischievous.
"I need your help, removing him from the library" he pointed towards where Yeosang had been. Then groaned as he grabbed her wrist again and started towards the stairs.
"Why?" Jae questioned, "He's an adult, he can stay here as long as he wants."
"You don't get it. We kind of broke into his parents house. "
"You what?" Yeosang yelled, as he walked down the stairs.
"Well, we wanted to make sure you actually would move out. Plus I knew you needed clothes." Wooyoung scratched his head.
"Who's 'we' " Yeosang pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.
"San and I. We ended up being stuck in your room when your parents came back, and I was lucky and got out your window. But I think San is still under your bed."
"Wooyoung, that is how people end up in jail" Jae's voice quiet, yet stern, as she placed her hand on Wooyoung's shoulder making him face her. "You can't break into people's houses!"
"We didn't really break in. The code was easy to guess" The gravity of the situation, seeming to finally sink in.
"That doesn't make it less illegal" She almost hissed.
"We've got to save San. I guess I'm facing my parents sooner than I thought" Yeosang groaned, as he started to lead them out of the library.
Soon enough they were back where they were the night before, at the small park by Yeosangs parents' house. Yeosang was trying to convince Jae to come with him, as support while wooyoung helped sneak San out.
"Your parents are going to recognize me from last night if I come with you!" Jae argued.
"But I think they will handle you better than him. They think he's a bad influence." Yeosang motioned towards Wooyoung, who was watching the two argue as if it were a drama while leaning against his car.
"And having me come with you, with my purple undercut, and eyebrow piercing will be a good thing? Plus your mom already thinks I'm a heathen because of my motorcycle. I don't think I'm one who should join you."
Jae found herself standing next to Yeosang as he knocked on the front door of his parents house. He was holding onto her wrist tightly. She was sure this is how she was going to die.
_____
She was 'the new girl' that everyone was talking about. Comments, gossip blogs, twitter, even the rest of the vlog squad. The last new person was Jeff, so for some reason she instantly related to him. They became best friends very quickly, always going on hikes and working out together, and just sitting around David's helping eachother edit.
They seemed to know everything about eachother, and seemed one hundred percent comfortable with eachother. There was no denying she had feelings for Jeff, but she refused to make the first move in fear of rejection.
Missed Call from my name jeff 2:57 AM
"Y/n, your phone's ringing." Natalie gently pushed her shoulder in attempt to wake her up. She'd fallen asleep on David's couch. She lifted her head up grogily and grabbed her phone, hitting the answer button.
"Hey." She sat up and wiped the sleep from her eyes.
"Hey, can you take care of Nerf tonight?" His words were rushed, as if he was dying to hang up the phone.
"Yeah, why?" She was suddenly more awake now as she listened to what was going on in the background of the phone call.
"I'm staying at a friends house tonight. You have a key, right?" He said, still rushing to hang up as a girl kissed his neck.
"A girl friend?" She asked as she stood up to find her shoes. She could hear the girl sucking on his skin, awfully close to the microphone on his cell.
"Yeah, y/n, a girl friend. You have a key, right?" He asked again, running his free hand on the girls skin.
"Yes. I'll see you in the morning." She was short as she hung up.
"What was that about?" Natalie asked her. She noticed David took his headphones out to listen to the conversation.
"Jeff's out with a girl again and needs me to watch Nerf again." She emphasized the word 'again' to show her frustration. David perked up.
"I think it's the same girl as last time. The other day he told me he really likes some instagram model." David's comment infuriated y/n even more.
"Well, if he's dating this chick then can't he set up some doggy daycare ahead of time?" She picked up her bag and dug around for her keys. "Why doesn't he just give Nerf to me? I'm always the one that ends up taking care of him and I don't even get a thank you." She ranted.
Deep down she knew she was more mad about him seeing another girl than having to take care of sweet little Nerf.
"Have fun!" Natalie called as y/n slammed the door behind her. Natalie and David looked at eachother and laughed.
"She totally has a crush on him."
She pulled up to Jeff's apartment around 3:30am. She took Nerf out for a walk before putting some food in his bowl and making her way into Jeff's bedroom. She raided his closet for pajamas, slipping on a sweatshirt that smelled like him and leaving her jeans in a pile on the floor. Nerf walked into the room with a toy so she played with him for a while before they cuddled and fell asleep in Jeff's bed.
Jeff shut the door quietly as he came in. He didn't wanna wake up y/n or his dog. He walked over to his bedroom and peered in. Y/n was hugging his comforter as if it were a person, and he noticed how his sweatshirt she was wearing was riding up. He looked at her underwear for a moment before throwing another blanket overtop of her.
She woke up later than she usually did and suddenly remembered where she was. She crawled out of bed, Nerf missing from his spot, and went looking for Jeff. He was editing on the couch, Nerf next to him, waiting patiently for her to wake up.
"You should just give Nerf to me." She said as she plopped down next to him. He chuckled, but she didn't. "I'm serious, Jeff. You can't keep calling me over to dog-sit in the middle of the night every time you have a booty call!" She was still very mad.
"Well, I can't bring her here, she's allergic to dogs." He closed his laptop before looking over at y/n. "I have to lint roll myself before I even go near her." He tried to justify his actions, but it wss just pissing her off.
"Yeah, I bet that's the reason she's always taking your clothes off!" Her voice was dripping with sarcasam as she rolled her eyes and stood up.
"Why are you so pissed at me? I thought you were just doin' me a favor?" His hands gestured wildly as he watched her stomp off to find her pants.
"Doing you a favor? Jeff you haven't said thank you to me once for the however many times I've done this for you. It's me trying to keep your dog alive, not doing you a favor!" She was screaming now as she buttoned her jeans and collected her things.
"What the fuck is your problem all of a sudden?" He stood up, not wanting her to leave.
"My problem? My problem is that I do so much for you and you don't do shit for me. You don't even give me the time of day anymore. When was the last time you invited me on a hike? Three weeks ago." She tried to push past him but he stopped her.
"I'm sorry I'm goin' on hikes with my girlfriend instead of you. I didn't know I needed permission to do that." Jeff was sarcastic now, too, trying to get her to understand his side of things.
"God, Jeff. Just shut the fuck up for once!" She finally pushed past him and put her hand on the doorknob. "Let me know when she stops taking up all your time and you're available to have friends again." She slammed the door behind her.
They didn't talk for weeks. Any time one of them showed up near the other one of them would leave. The fans noticed the tension and the rest of their friends felt like their parents had gotten divorced. They were always forced to pick a person to hang out with, and it made things incredibly awkward.
One night it was some random persons birthday, but the vlog squad was invited to the party. Jeff had gotten there first with his girlfriend, but y/n had riden with David and a few other friends. She decided she would be the bigger person and stick it out. She was bored of fighting with him. She just wanted her Jeff back.
They eyed eachother all night, and nobody could tell if they were judging eachother or eye-fucking eachother. Jeff's girlfriend would notice y/n across the room and start grinding on him, or kissing him, or whatever she could do to try and assert her dominance. Y/n didn't care. She was dressed to the nines and wanted Jeff to know it. She grinded on every single person around them, and even threw in a few kisses with females to turn Jeff on. She knew he was watching.
Y/n got closer and closer to the couple as the night went on, but didn't make her move until Jeff's girlfriend left to pee.
"Long time, no talk." She said as she started to dance on him. His hands instinctively moved to her waist as he studied her face. "How's Nerf?" She asked.
"He's fine. How've you been?" Jeff was more interested in her than ever. They continued small talk and stared into eachothers eyes. The energy between them was different than ever before. Eventually Jeff's girlfriend returned and y/n slipped away in the blink of an eye.
Text Message from Y/N 🙃 12:14AM
break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored.
He smirked at his phone as he texted her back.
"What are you smiling at?" His girlfriend bitched. Y/n was right, and he was done with her anyway. Jeff showed her the text message.
"Bye." He waved to his ex-girlfriend as he went to find the girl he really wanted. He went upstairs in the random persons house and searched empty bedrooms. He found y/n sitting on the end of a bed, waiting for him. "Bored, huh?" He joked as he stripped his shirt off.
"Yeah." She scanned his body.
"Lemme fix that."
Naruto's worldbuilding is really weak since it focused on the villages instead of countries. But worldbuilding was never the main focused of the series it just bothers me because the villains made speeches about how dark and miserable the world is and I can't care for a world I haven't seen fully. I was caught of guard when they said SHINOBI world like the shinobi way of life only mattered. I'm like "fuck you, you're not the only ones living there"
I got this anon ask a long time ago (months, possibly???) but because I’ve been letting my inbox pile up I haven’t gotten to it until now, so IDK if this Anon will see it. Sorry to all the Anons who send me stuff I never answer btw, sometimes I just can’t think of a good answer at the time or whatever and then the longer it sits in my inbox the more awkward I feel about answering it.
But because I recently answered an ask about Shikamaru Hiden it got me thinking about this question, because one of the main points of the villain in that book is one of the strangest qualities of the “Shinobi World” depicted in Naruto: civilians and shinobi live such separate lives, almost to the point of being like separate species that inhabit the same area, in the Marvel mutants universe sense. But at least within the Marvel verse, mutants usually come from regular humans, but in Naruto, basically everything is about “bloodlines”, with the extremely rare exceptions like Lee (who dates back to part one, when “fighting fate” was an important message in Naruto). As the series goes on, bloodlines become even more important; the Uzumaki turn out to be an extremely important, famous clan with powerful bloodline traits (which creates a plot hole as to why Naruto was given that surname to “disguise” him when it’s the clan with the symbol that’s literally everywhere in Konoha–it’s just a plot hole, Kishimoto hadn’t thought of it when he gave Naruto the name, and it doesn’t make sense). Even more than that, Naruto and Sasuke (and a number of the other most important characters in the series) turn out to be descended from literal extraterrestrial superbeings. As well as being fated, prophesied reincarnations.
And yet. We’re supposed to just go along with the idea that civilians call the shots? Own the property and the wealth and the political power, and hire the ninja?
Look at the arc where Rasa has the Suna nin ally with Sound to fight Konoha, in order to impress the Land of Wind daimyo. In terms of power differential, this a bit like the idea of Russia allying with France to invade China in order to impress Burkina Faso.
So there’s a very good reason why Kishimoto deals with civilians as little as possible in his series. The more you look at the civilian power structure, the less it makes sense. Moreover, dealing realistically with civilians would have to involve #1 actually reforming the shinobi system, which is something that the series is never going to do at this point, and #2 actually confronting the idea of “preserving the clan/village” vs “preserving human lives and human rights” and why sacrificing the latter for the former in things like the Uchiha Massacre WAS WRONG. The series is never going to do that at this point either. Enjoy the aliens.
