Kaiju Weeks in Review (July 16-29, 2023)

Legendary announced a pair of Monsterverse comics during a panel at San Diego Comic Con. They've said nothing further since, and no one posted the panel online, so I have less to tell you than I'd like. Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted is the obligatory prequel comic for the film. From the pages they showed off, it looks like Zid has art duties again (well-deserved) and the monsters that Kong is fighting could be the "swamp kitt[ies]" cut from Godzilla vs. Kong. Release date is February 27. Monsterverse Declassified is going to spotlight some of the series' original monsters, with the previews showing Behemoth, Amhuluk, and Tiamat. (Supposedly Scylla, Doug, and the previously-unseen Abaddon will be in it too.)

Toho is finally letting Togen's 4K scans of some of its Godzilla films out of satellite TV jail as tie-ins to Godzilla Minus One. Godzilla (1954) and Mothra vs. Godzilla are coming to 4K Ultra HD on October 25, with Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro-Monster, and Destroy All Monsters on November 22 and Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Godzilla vs. Biollante. Expect them to be as English-unfriendly as Toho's other releases - but a vague promise of "unused special effects footage", combined with some very crisp-looking photos in a recent book, means there's a chance the Frontier Missile sequence from Godzilla vs. The Thing will be included with Mothra vs. Godzilla. That'd be a godsend, considering how elusive an uncropped, uncut, high-quality version of the scene has proven to be.

These releases will easily be the best Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah, Astro-Monster, and Biollante have ever looked on home video. But with Togen shutting down, it's unclear when the rest of the pre-Shin films in the series will get upgrades. (It's also unclear when Toho will permit anyone outside Japan to use these versions for streaming or home video.) So this announcement feels bittersweet to me.

We have a release date for GAMERA -Rebirth- (September 7), a second trailer, and a reveal for the final monster: Viras! As @starestream pointed out, there's a lot of Legion in that design (along with Iris in Zigra). And as Maser Patrol pointed out, this is the same enemy kaiju lineup that Trendmasters chose for its toyline back in 1998. Poor Barugon, no one wants to taste the rainbow (and it probably hurts that he's so visually similar to Jiger too). To be honest, this trailer didn't do much for me; a bit too chaotic. Hopefully it'll be easier to tell what's happening in the show proper.

Bandai, of course, has readied Movie Monster Series figures of Viras, Zigra, and Guiron already. We're also getting a prequel manga set 100,000 years before the show.

Decades after his rampage through the Marvel Universe, Godzilla is barging into the world of DC (where he'll finally meet Batman). Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong is a seven-issue limited series launching October 17, written by Brian Buccellato (who also penned the short "Fight or Flight" comic that will be included in Legends of the Monsterverse: The Omnibus later this year) with art by Christian Duce. The inciting incident is a battle between the Justice League and the Legion of Doom, which tears a hole in reality to let the Monsterverse through.

I'll confess, I was more jazzed for last year's Power Rangers crossover, thanks to the tokusatsu link. This could just be more of Warner Bros. Discovery bashing its toys together. I'm most curious to see if the Legion of Doom makes a bid to conquer the Monsterverse, which with Godzilla and Kong out of the picture is far less prepared for them than the DC universe is for a couple of giant monsters. Superman beats them all, as Ken Yano once said.

Hiya is stepping further out of S.H.Monsterarts' shadow with a figure of the female MUTO, a character long neglected by toymakers. They showed her off at San Diego Comic Con. Playmates meanwhile releases an ad for Titan Tech Rodan - I'm glad they're not giving up on this delightful subline.

Summer Smash concludes IDW's middle-grade Monsters and Protectors storyline, which has spanned the entirety of their second go-round with Godzilla. You can tell it was supposed to be another miniseries; Godzilla, Jet Jaguar, and Mothra send Mecha-King Ghidorah and the Xiliens packing pretty quickly. Art's still great though.

Godzilla Rivals will persist into October with Vs. Mechagodzilla, the magnificent machine being the last of the Toho's Big Five to headline one of these comics. The intriguing logline:

IS YOUR CITY BESIEGED BY KAIJU? DO YOU LIE AWAKE AT NIGHT ANXIOUSLY LISTENING FOR THE MONSTER SIRENS? HAVE YOU HAD ALL YOU CAN TAKE OF GIANT LIZARDS, MOTHS, PTERODACTYLS, AND SHRIMP? It’s a sleepy city with not much going on. That is, until Tracer Tech built their new corporate headquarters there, displacing lifelong citizens and forcing out local businesses. And what can a couple of local kids like Alex and Jaz do to protect their city when the King of the Monsters and its robot doppelgänger clash?

SRS Cinema has opened preorders for The Whale God, revealing this cover art by Bob Eggleton. Special features aren't anything spectacular (they're vaguely described, but I think a couple of essays are included, plus the obligatory trailers). Should be out by the end of the year.

The disc replacement program for Cleopatra Entertainment's misbegotten Shin Ultraman releases has resulted in an only marginally better product. The opening montage has subtitles now... but like the rest of the movie, they're just copied from the English dub. Dubtitles in 2023... and for a film that already has a perfectly good official English translation, no less. Oh, and they threw in some new visual glitches too. If your local library picks up a copy, I recommend telling them about the disc replacement program (as I've done), but don't give these clowns your money.

It's time for another Animatic Deep Dive!!

For those of you who haven't seen me do this before, I always like to do a massive post digging into my animatics after they get uploaded. This'll include a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff, HD stills, and a whooole lot of insight into shot choices and cinematic storytelling. All my rambling is under the 'keep reading' break!

Before I say anything, here's the link to the animatic, if you haven't watched it yet or want easier access to it while reading through this post:

I always love showing my shot sheets, and I'm really thankful for them because they manage to somehow keep me sane throughout the entire project. So here are some snip-its of that:

I also want to include my value sheet, because getting the lighting right for this project was very important to me. A bit of a fun fact: the backgrounds for the very first shot (top left) and the entire sequence where Serizawa goes outside are just barely the same value.

Now, the part where I share HD stills & go into shot composition will be meshed together here because it's a little more organized that way. One thing you should know about me is that I'm a sucker for cinematic storytelling. It's why I love doing parallel shots and other little things that help propel the story even further than just "he picks up his umbrella here."

One big example of this is the first & final shots of the video. They both feature Serizawa and his umbrella (which could honestly be considered a character in its own right for this animatic). But the umbrellas in these shots are not the same, and you also get a sense that neither is Serizawa. Where he's all alone and clutching to what's basically his lifeline during the first shot, in the final shot he's surrounded by people who love him and is able to leave his umbrella behind.

And going into a more glaring parallel, and my favorite personally, I want to talk about the two over-the-shoulder shots. They are literally mirror shots of each other, with everything including the framing. But they couldn't be more different, in order to show how much Serizawa has grown. Even the lyrics parallel each other. ("And I wandered through the house like a little boy lost at the mall" // "And I stood there like a businessman waiting for a train")

And while I'm talking about lyrics, one sequence that honestly broke my heart while working on this was the first time we hear that repeated question of "what do I do?"

This whole bit was meant to read like Serizawa was asking that question aloud. And well, if this sequence is his question, then the second time we hear those same words are certainly the answer. As if to say, "This. This is what you did."

Now. I'm a sucker for camera movement. I had a ton of it in my Royai animatic, and it was a lot of fun to figure out. But I really wanted this animatic to read as snapshots from life, like photographs on a wall. And well, photos don't have camera movements. But there is one scene in the entire animatic that does have a camera move, and it's the one where Serizawa gets dressed and the camera pans to reveal his past self staring back at him from the mirror. I think saving the one camera move for this scene really helped, because I wanted it to be as jarring as possible.

And just as a little note, because I had to include them somewhere in here, I was so happy with the two shots of Serizawa and the character I've lovingly dubbed Scaryzawa. I just really wanted to convey the fear that Serizawa had that he was reverting back to how he used to be, and I'm so glad that a lot of people enjoyed these shots as much as I did.

And now, there's one glaring scene that I've avoided talking about til now because it's my absolute favorite, and this whole section is gonna get pretty ramble-y. I'm talking about the scene where Serizawa finally goes outside. Just like I mentioned earlier, the animatic was mainly still shots, and any animation was extremely limited. But going into this scene, I knew I needed to make it special. And the best way, in my opinion, was to make it full of motion.

I just really think there's something beautiful about someone like Serizawa stepping outside and really being introduced to nature again, even if it's unintentional. I put this line in the shot sheet, and I think I've said it to a few people already, but I really enjoyed the idea of Serizawa looking up through the skeleton of his umbrella and seeing the view it never allowed him when it was intact. And trying to capture that beauty and emotion is extremely hard, and something I don't really think is possible in my style. But I'm still so happy with how those two shots turned out.

And connecting myself to this a little bit because I'm selfish...I actually finished these shots and the animatic as a whole on my birthday. It's the day before Serizawa's, and while my own birthday is always a time of reflection for me, I really enjoyed being able to to reflect on someone else's growth for their birthday. Even if he's just a fictional character, Serizawa is very important to me and a lot of other people. I think I really connect myself to fictional characters because it helps me rationalize my own growth and journey. So, all of that to say that this animatic also felt like a birthday gift to me.

ANYWAYS. Wow. This was long. The Royai deep dive was long, but this is long. Thank you if you managed to read this far, seriously. And thank you to everyone who has shown their love for this thing I spent the past month on. I don't think I'll ever get used to having people seriously enjoy the work I do. Just really, truly, thank you. And happy birthday to Serizawa!

Ok, time for some thoughts regarding yesterday's Nintendo Direct!

Pikmin 4: Nothing too revolutionary, just taking the Pikmin formula and refining/expanding it, like Pikmin 2 and 3 did before it. And honestly, that's not a bad thing! I love the Pikmin games, they're really fun and charming and this one seems to continue that trend. It seems we're getting all the existing Pikmin types in addition to the new Ice Pikmin so that'll be cool. And the new doggo is adorable! I'm really looking forward to this one.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective: This is a game that I always wanted to play and never got to do it, so I'm glad to see it ported to the Switch! Maybe this will be the time I actually play it.

Sea of Stars: Absolutely gorgeous and looks really fun as well, taking inspiration from one of my favorite games ever. Apparently it got a demo so I'll probably give that a try. I still need to play The Messenger though...

Game Boy and Game Boy Advance added to Nintendo Switch Online: Finally! And now I actually have the Expansion Pack thanks to a friend so I can get hyped about GBA too. The libraries are a bit limited for the time being but that's to be expected. Looking forward to replaying some of my favorites from that era and also try a few classics for the first time. Although the games I'm most hyped about are the ones that were confirmed to come in the future, like Oracle of Seasons/Ages, Pokémon TCG, Metroid Fusion and of course freaking GOLDEN SUN (yes, I'm ready to replay it for the millionth time).

Metroid Prime Remastered: Okay, I wasn't expecting this one, even though it had been rumored for a while. While I would've liked to see the entire trilogy in one package, the first Prime is arguably the best one and also one of the best games ever made. The remake looks amazing and much more polished than just a simple HD port. Seriously, if you haven't played this game before, give it a try, it's a masterpiece, and this is coming from someone who hates shooters (Metroid Prime isn't really a shooter).

Baten Kaitos I & II Remaster: HOLY SHIT. Another one (two?) that I always wanted to play but didn't get when it first came out before it became impossible to find, and never bothered with trying to emulate. I'd love to give the series a chance on modern hardware.

Professor Layton And The New World of Steam: HOOOOOO BOY!!! This might seriously be my favorite announcement of the Direct, even though they didn't really show us anything! I was a HUGE Layton fan during the DS era and I was so sad that the series kinda just died all of a sudden. I'm honestly so fucking hyped for this! Please be good, please be good, please be good!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Wave 4: The new track looks amazing! Yoshi's Island was one of the defining games from my childhood so this gets me extremely nostalgic. Also Birdo was a nice surprise! I wasn't expecting characters in the pass! While I don't really care about Birdo in particular, this opens the door for more characters so maybe this means I can finally have my boy Diddy Kong again. Please. It's been so long.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Honestly I don't have a lot to say about this one. Am I hyped? Absolutely. But we still know so little about this game! What's the story about? How does it differ from BotW? Although, part of me kinda wishes it stays this way. Trailers tend to spoil too much stuff these days, so I'm fine with keeping the surprises for when I actually play the game. Oh, and it's a minor thing, but I hope they bring back Wolf Link and/or a similar mechanic (and not locked to amiibo this time). I just loved exploring Hyrule with a doggo.

Overall a really exciting Direct, and there were also a bunch of other cool announcements that I didn't touch here. Now to work on my backlog so I can play shiny new games without feeling guilty, lol.

So! I don't go to many concerts by myself, especially on the outskirts. The busses don't run that late and the trip usually isn't worth it. One of the things I like to do at concerts is check who is wearing what. I like spotting things like who bought a shirt there, who's wearing what and what for. Counting how many have conflicting shirts on (Devin Townsend, Animals as Leaders and Dream Theater were playing the same night at a venue 3 hours away), curious things like that. Like, seeing a Ne Obliviscaris hoodie in the wild is fun. Thinking to myself "I didn't know Pain of Salvation had t-shirts." Seeing the old heads in Scorpions and Megadeth t-shirts. I spotted two people that I'm guessing were being "funny" wearing, respectively, a Tom Jones and a Barbara Streisand shirt. Oh, you cards! You pixies! Feh. Aren't YOU interesting. I kid, for the most part. Whether or not I care to admit it, these are my people. Metal crowds are, far and away, the most accepting crowds I have ever been around. Unless yous aw Drudkh in their heyday. Rivers of Nihil are a technical/prog death metal band from nearby Reading. They were fine, but they are also one of those bands whose songs tend to blend together after like, the 4th one. In fairness, I've seen them before, and the last time I saw them was around 2018, and they had a saxophone player. They were very good, but I wasn't engaged. Thank You Scientist are a high-pitched yelly modern prog band. Their singer looks like a cross between Bunsen Honeydew and Mike Doughty and sounds like that doofus from Coheed and Cambria. The band, especially the saxophone player, looked and sounded like they were having the time of their LIVES. Airtight, doodly fun, but not especially the kind of music I tend to enjoy. Still, they had a great energy and enthusiasm. And they were nice guys. Everyone was there for Between the Buried and Me. I didn't realize that this was the tour commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the Parallax II: Future Sequence, their 2012 album, which meant they were probably going to play that one, start to finish. Confirmed. Not especially familiar with MOST of that album, but there were people singing along to ALL OF IT and I was at once impressed and surprised that this band had this obsessive a fanbase (I am clearly a dumbshit), but it was really enjoyable. It helped that they had these 5 massive LED screens behind them essentially playing HD Koyaanisqatsi footage of things like deserts and cities and hawks catching fish out of the water and new planets with rings and coronas and solar flares and astronauts and galaxies and that they were perfectly timed with every riff and drum fill. It was incredibly well-timed and choreographed. They also strobed rainbow lights directly at my eyeline every 8 seconds and it gave me a migraine 3 songs in. Also, aside from the 25-minute bus ride, I had essentially been on my feet since 6:30 that morning and my feet were dying. I was running out of gas. Two minutes into the second-to-last song ("Silent Flight Parliament"), the lights drop to black. I, maybe alone, thought that they would come back up in a crescendo, based on the light show. But no, ALL of the lights are out. The only thing you can hear is the drummer because he hasn't stopped. Cell phone lights are brandished. Event staff take the stage, people are booing. They finally get everyone calmed down enough to tell them that a transformer exploded, knocking out the power to half of the neighborhood, and that we are to evacuate in an orderly fashion. More booing, people somehow get sweatier. We get outside and it's like the Omega Man, except with a slight rainy haze. There are no lamps or signs, only phones and headlights providing any illumination. Police sirens EVERYWHERE. Thank God I had a ride home. My apprehensions about going, turns out, were absolutely correct, but I'm very glad I went all the same. If nothing else, I got my shirts. :)

Justice in the Dark ep 5:

I'm spoiled by this show. It may not be the Perfect adaptation (or show) to everyone, but for me? It's doing everything I wanted and more. Personally. The tone feeling right, the visuals and music feeling right, the acting being as it is, the story beats, even the choice of 1 hour eps which I normally dislike but fits the crime thriller kdrama style it's going for very well, I am all in love with.

I now find Luo Wenzhou very hot. Actors working for me now. I'm also generally noticing more pores, acne, cover up texture on actors faces which looks better to me so I'm assuming either it just didn't show in the lower quality I started the shows on (now I'm watching in hd) or they changed style slightly post episode 2 to a bit closer to realism and I prefer the style change - I think everyone looks better and more realistic as a result. Luo is growing stubble and again the look screams Zhao Yunlan (didn't Luo not have stubble in the book he was very clean cut?), but this particular actor is doing well at feeling older, responsible, caring, intelligent, stable, and all of Luo Wenzhous traits are shining. His actor is very action movie hero almost but everyday man. Anyway point is Luos really working for me now <3

I am glad the Chengguang mansion was finally showed when it was corded off by police. It is a big piece in the novel and I suspected it wasn't being shown due to idk maybe budget constraints or not being able to get a mansion to shoot in that looked adequate (which could be the case idk). So I'm glad we got at least a final establishing shot as it was closed off, so it leaves an image of it in our minds.

The wishing on a cigarette scene. Fei Du walking away. I haven't read the book in a while so memory is ??, but the show scene made it feel like he was wishing and hoping Fei Du heals. Heals from the nightmares, the pain, the fear he's someone people will abandon that causes him to stay away from opening up, that makes him want to put on acts and keep people at a distance.

The interrogation was slow build up but I really enjoyed it by the end and I'm glad in retrospect it got the bulk of the episode time. I mentioned I think if i had one critique of the show, it's that the case writing adds some case relevant info to dialogue quickly then moves on and it's hard to know when the fuck stuff like Golden Triangle got mentioned or new names and it makes following the case harder (and doubly harder if you've not read the book). I think the interrogation scene patched a lot of that problem up (for case one), by going on about the Golden Triangle and He Zongyi and his friend and Zhang Donglan and his sister and Chen Yuan and Cui family and the events of the night He Zongyi died enough to finally clarify what all the pieces meant that were brought up and who was involved and who did what. The policeman who was helping the drug group is skimmed over quickly unfortunately so that detail isn't very clear (and probably hard to even catch if you didn't read the book since he's a problem in more scenes directly in the book impeding the investigation) but at least it is said aloud in the interrogation scene. And I think if the story skims that part effectively cutting it for the most part, at least by the end of the interrogation scene the major parties are covered. I do still hope the cases moving forward will do a better job clarifying case details as they are discovered though. I think that is the weakest part of the shows writing right now (or direction) just because some clues did get mentioned so quickly off hand it was difficult to catch. On the upside I guess though, is if like me you did find Detective L type murder mysteries way too simple, this show retained priests complexity to the cases. Rewatches would reward you. Paying careful attention during the SID going over files having conversations would yield details since it's not actually filler (there's like 0 filler at all in this show its all very case relevant or Luo wenzhou/fei du and their main character arcs or their friends arcs by extension). Adding to complexity, again compared to Detective L (which I did love but it was a simple relax show), is that you get the sense CONSTANTLY that this city setting is Huge and crimes are going on in all kinds of niches, there's corruption in the police you know is playing out past the scope of SID, you know there's a foreboding sense the crime in the city may not be all isolated and may in part be caused by bigger leaders who may show up later and need to be confronted. It's a little like Beyond Evil in that sense, or again Flower of Evil (it's super similar to FoE in that Fei Du and FoE leading guy both were raised by abusive cruel fathers and themselves were encouraged to also commit cruel acts and they've internally got the terror they'll be like that, and the desire to mask their behavior and appear a specific way to others). Except this is a cdrama, so we are looking at 30 eps instead of 12-16. So this plot may add more to keep track of then a kdrama of this genre (at least if it keeps going at the fast pace it's going- like I said this show has pretty much 0 filter, it's all important scene for the crime mystery or the characters). I do hope the case clue writing gets more clear to the audience. That's the only weak spot to me so far. It's not like so weak it's unbearable. But with cases with this many details, clarity and the ability to be clear about showing the audience what clues are known so far is really fucking important.

I love. That's all. Again. I just love this show.

I love how Luo looks at Fei du. I love being able to feel their history in the way they can read each other at a glance, communicate without speaking, know what each others pasts are and make guesses at what each other thinks or remembers in certain moments. How there's a lot that goes into them on one level looking like equals now - Fei Du did help the case and bring valuable insight (and that will grow when he joins the team), he's an adult with his own friends and helping Them Zhang Donglan and the mother (the way Luo tried to help Fei as a child), he's both eye to eye with Luo literally and able to interpret him just as well as Luo can read him - he's become more like a partner and equal, more like Tao Ran but civilian version instead of cop partner version. But at the same time how Luo takes this internal guardian angel responsibility when he met Fei Du and can't really stop, can't stop caring for Fei Du over the years even letting Fei Du hate him and not letting Fei Du know he's looking out for him and hoping he's taken care of and happy and okay constantly, learning Fei Dus mannerisms and looks and thoughts as much as Fei Dus learned his over the years. And its no surprise as they become partners in solving crimes as adults, as friends now/soon, that solid everlasting care he wants for Fei Du evolves to romantic love. It's no surprise, when Fei Du is who's already held closest in his heart. Who he worries about and looks to in wonder of his opinion, in wanting his connection. It's of course also clear that even though Fei Du projected a crush on Tao Ran, it's Luo he deeply cares about and worries about the opinion of, Luo who's opinion can please him or crush him. Who he desperately wants to abandon him so Fei can fully hate him (in a way he really never can because he does appreciate Luo despite it all), or prove More over and Over that he won't.

Meanwhile... I imagine Tao Rans been seeing this dynamic I'm talking about here for AGES, Tao Ran is an angel for not confronting the both of them.

I've been waiting for this to come to Switch for quite some time. I'm glad it's finally coming so I can have a majority of the Final Fantasy games on my Switch to play at any time. I'm hoping that Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics are on their way. The Nvidia leak shows that FFT may be on the way ....I'm willing to bet they are doing a HD-2D Remake of Chrono Trigger if I had to guess.

There's of course a ton of other classic SE titles I'm hoping get ported like Brave Fencer Musashi and Xenogears but the fact we are getting Front Mission 2 which was previously unreleased here is pretty dope. I'm glad they are putting more effort in bringing stuff we never got here. I've always wanted to put out Youtube streams or reviews of me playing these games but I'm way too self conscious and wanting it to be perfect for that. It consumes me unfortunately...

What are your impressions of Fire Emblem Engage?

So... I completely forgot about the leaks from June until the announcement. And my goodness, I'm surprised. I genuinely thought that Alear was just someone's bad genshin mod that they were passing off as a leak. Everyone else seems... Ok? There's not really a clear look at any of them for more than three seconds. But the ability to change costumes is gonna be a godsend for some of them, I can tell.

The gameplay looks good. I'm glad we're finally gonna get to see Sigurd in HD, with full voice acting to boot! Hopefully there's more than just the 12 lords on the ring available. After all, we've got some significant ones missing: Alm, Seliph, Eliwood, Hector, Ephraim, Chrom, Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude. I also wouldn't be surprised if they added the secondary mains for some more diversity. Caeda, Tiki, Deirdre, Julia, Nanna, Lilina, Fae, Ninian, Elincia, Sothe, Robin, and Azura seem like the likeliest choices there since all of them have (or are eligible) for Legendary Alts in FEH. Characters close to the MCs like Finn and Soren would be awesome as well.

There's a split second of an evil looking guy putting on one of the rings. I really hope that ring ends up summoning villains and not corrupted heroes, as watching all the Gharnef archetypes fight each other over who's best would be absolutely hilarious. I actually don't know which of them would be the most dangerous in this situation.

And lastly, there was one last part to that leak: an upcoming FE4 remake. So, even if we got a mixed bag here, we have a very good shot at finally getting the FE equivalent to Mother 3 a shot at going west.

Black Cat. The name froze the young photographer on his tracks right outside his boss' office. He hadn't heard that name in a long time, the last sighting had been well over a year ago. He would know.  After all, it had been him, the very last person to have seen Felicia Hardy, alive or dead.

"What are you talking about? That looks hot af, not to mention badass!" Jade's persuasive voice reached his ears, making him smirk: It was no secret the chief editor had a soft spot for the young intern. And, on her part, the petite brunette was a firecracker. Poor old Jameson didn't stand a chance. "Come on, dad. Single handedly taking down three of the Kingpin's goons? That's impressive. It deserves to be one of the slides!" 

"Not if we don't get a higher quality picture. That blurry video is good enough for a thumbnail, but not for a slide" Slides were a big deal, they were the Dailybugle.net's equivalent of a front page, and if J. Jonah Jameson took something seriously, it was his web site. He prided himself in the quality of the "receipts" of his "tea", as if that validated the trashiness of the bullshit articles he posted, more fiction from hyper imaginative wannabe writers than serious work from real reporters. 

"Well, then let's get the pictures. Where is that star photographer of yours?" 

The photographer rolled his eyes, typical Jade. As if the queen of cool didn't know his name. As if she hadn't graced his bed a handful of times already. 

"That's a good question. Dolores, get me Reilly!"

"I'm here, Jonah" Ben finally stepped inside the office, throwing an envelope on Jameson's desk before throwing himself on a chair across it. He could feel Jade's eyes on him, almost like a physical caress, trailing from the long, slick back curls on the top of his head, to the muscles of his arms, threatening to rip open the seams at the sleeves of his white t-shirt, to his jean clad thighs. Still, he didn't turn to look at her, refusing to give her the satisfaction. 

"What do you have for me today, boy?"

Ben gesticulated vaguely with his head in the direction of Jade, and Jameson caught the hint. 

"Jade, out!" 

"But, dad, my story!" The petulant reply left her mouth before she could stop it, undoubtedly the product of years of habit. But she had the grace to look embarrassed and leave the office without another word, trying to save whatever professionalism she had left. 

Once she was gone, Jameson opened the envelope, flipping through the various pictures of a masked figure swinging around New York in a black and red suit. 

"Hmmm… these are good" the older man praised, staring at the images of a frustrated robbery at 5th avenue

Ben snifled nocomitically,

"There was a fire at 16th avenue happening at the same time" He offered, "we could use that. Spider-Man forgets his roots and leaves his old neighborhood to fend for itself, running off to save some pretty socialite…"

"Oh, that is excellent! See, this is why I like you, kid. You have initiative. Unlike these snowflakes out there. Oh, but Spider-Man is a hero. Hero, my ass"

"Well, when you watch your so called hero sit back and do nothing as your life gets destroyed" Ben shrugged, "the rose colored glasses tend to fall off…"

Jameson made a face at that,

"Yeah, about that… I'm sorry. For the role the Daily Bugle played on that…"

Ben shook his head, 

"You thought you were getting the truth out there. It's not your fault to have been played, along with half the world. Plus," he added, sounding genuinely enthusiastic, "you gave me this job. And now we can really tell the truth"

"Even when our idea of the truth is somehow different" The older man scoffed, flipping around a picture of Spider-Man sat on what appeared to be a hammock of his own webs, eating a hamburger and reading something that looked suspiciously like a comic book, "Still hung up on that high schooler theory of yours?"

"Well, if it talks like a brat and acts like a brat…" Ben took out another envelope, this time containing a few burger king wrappers and, effectively, a spider-man comic book. 

"Where did you even get these?"

"Harlem" was Ben's curt reply, and Jameson knew that was as exact a location as he was going to get. 

"So you still believe this is a copycat? Some kid playing dress up"

Ben simply shrugged again. 

"Well, there seems to be an epidemic of those lately" Jameson admitted, indicating Ben to come closer, passing a tablet to him, "Jade just handled me this, take a look"

Ben took a deep breath, steeling himself, already knowing what he was going to see in it. Yet, a part of him couldn't help but hope to be wrong. To hope the silver haired figure facing three much bigger, stronger looking ones as he pressed play, wasn't the same one he had spent weeks memorizing last summer. Wasn't the body he had found solace in, when everything fell apart, once again, for the hundredth time in his life. 

To hope it wasn't you. 

But when in his twenty-two or so years of existence, had things ever gone his way? 

Ben felt the screen crack under his fingertips.

"I've heard of her" he lied through his teeth, "didn't even think she was real, to be honest. Extremely elusive, and cunning." That much was true, "I don't understand how something as mundane as a security camera managed to catch her…" 

Unless you wanted to be caught, that was. 

"Well, I don't care if she's the fucking Loch Ness monster, I want an HD picture of her on my desk tomorrow to go with Jade's article. I already have a headline: New Catastrophe Jen wreaks havoc on Hell's Kitchen" Jameson's eyes lit up with glee as he weaved his hands up in the air, like writing on an invisible marquee. 

Ben snorted

"Don't you mean Calamity Jane?"

Jameson's face fell, the color rising to his cheeks, characteristic vein popping on his forehead. 

"I meant what I meant, boy! Now, what are you still doing here? You have 24 hours to get me that picture"

"I'm going to need 72," came Ben's unphased reply, "and I want twice what you pay me for the spidey pics"

Jameson's vein looked about ready to explode,

"48 hours. And deal."

Ben jumped from his seat and bolted out of the office before his boss could change his mind, not realizing until it was too late that he was on a collision course with a sweet looking short haired blonde girl. 

"Watch where you're going! Jeez!"

"Me? You're the one who crashed against me!" 

Ben rolled his eyes, but crouched next to the girl anyway, helping her gather the papers that had been sent flying on impact back together.

"Peter? Oh my god, is that you?"

Of course. What an idiot, he should had recognized that annoying, shrilly voice the second he heard it. It had caught him off guard, something he knew he couldn't afford. But how could he had ever imagine he could run into Betty fucking Brant, Yale cum laude, in the freaking dailybugle.net headquarters of all places?

"Sorry, sweetheart. You must confuse me with someone else…" He mumbled, lowering his head even more in a vain attempt to hide his face.

"Of course not!" She insisted, "You're Peter, Peter Parker, we went to Midtown together!"

"Miss, I have no idea what you're talking about…"

"Don't be silly, Peter!" She chuckled, completely deft to his tone or the way his whole demeanor had changed the second she had called him by the old name. "How have you been? Oh, just wait until I tell Ned, he's going to be so-"

CRACK.

At last, the tablet that had been in peril ever since Jameson had put it in Ben's hands, the one that contained his assignment, met its demise, both broken halves falling to the ground, along with all the papers he had picked up for Betty. It was several moments before he could get the shaking of his hands under control, before the tar black rage inside him subsided enough for him to be able to move without shifting. But it had.

"Peter Parker is dead." He deadpanned, dark brown eyes finally meeting Betty's stunned blue ones, "Tell Ned that, he'll probably be glad to hear it"

With that, he stood up and walked away, leaving a confused and agitated Betty behind.

Hello friends it's another sunday I wanna share my art progress with you! At first tho I wanted to thank you guys for all the likes and shares, I would have never thought people would read my blog and seeing a positive reaction to my first blog is incredibly nice, thanks to everyone! This week wasn't as productive due to me finishing a game I started back in summer and getting a new fishtank! Firstly I wanna show you my fish, this foto was taken at the pet store. He has since moved into his 54l fishtank at home.

His name is Oki, inspired by the game I finished this week, which was Okami HD. Anyways enough for my life outside of art, here are my pieces for this week.

Week 2: (14.2.-20.2.2022)

My first piece was teased at the end of my last blog so I wanna start with this!

Here is the fully completed piece, this took me multiple days but I'm super happy with this! It's my friend's Rito character baking an apple pie at night (why at night? I'm not sure I started painting in the night sky randomly). My focus this year will be on full, detailed illustrations that tell stories and I'm glad I already made a bunch of those. I also can see a little progress from me starting to make big illustrations to where we are now, which makes me really excited to see where I'll be at the end of the year.

This piece technically wasn't created this week but it was posted this week and I wanna show it. This was made for valentinesday day, as we, the mods for the zelda creators server, wanted to make sonething nice for our community. Here you have my sona, a sugarpink Zora and the fun tagline "there are many fish at the domain... but you are my prince" eluting to the fact that I have a big fat crush on the Zora prince. (Shamelessly) I think it's a super cute piece and I like my sona as well. Really nice, really fun.

Oh my here we go, my Okami pieces. This week I played for hours untill I finally finished the game and had to imidiatly make fanart for the game. Here is a real quick full body piece of Ammy and Issun is here as well. I focussed on making the lineart the most prominent part, just like the game. I used my Sakura brush pen, even tho I have a proper japanese brush pen that I was not that comfident in using.

Hey look, the actual japanese brush pen. For this piece I actually tried using the proper pen and I really love the result! Looks super authentic to the game's art style and I wanna do more Okami art, using this brush pen. For now I wanted to draw the canine warriors, maybe queen Otohime, I'm not quite sure.

Lastly I remade my commission sheets

I'm not expecting getting any commissions here but I'm posting this up, just in case.

And this was all I made this week, as I said very little sadly but hey, I have another two weeks of break so I still have plenty of time to make cool stuff. See y'all next sunday!
