izzy is the reason the atmosphere on the revenge was poisoned. in the most basic cause-and-effect terms, prior to izzy's betrayal of ed and stede to the british, the ship was at the height of "the good old days" and "when life meant something." Izzy is the one that ended those days. He called the brits to execute Stede. After Ed's return to the ship, Izzy was the one that couldn't handle Ed's grief and subsequent desire to keep being soft. Izzy was the one that forced catastrophic change on the ship first by getting rid of Stede and then by demanding the return of blackbeard.
and now... his most fervent fans are the reason the atmosphere in the fandom is fucked. just, hmm. interesting.
utterly consumed by how in s3 the main issue with mike is that he's unhealthily obsessed with el to the detriment of everybody who knows them, inculding the two of them, and then in s4 the main issue with mike is that he's literally going out of his way to not give el anything more than the bare fucking minimum of affection.
he somehow manages to ignore everyone else in favour of el... and then also ignore her??? even in s3 when he's devoting all his attention to her he doesn't pay any heed to her needs as an individual, or spend any time with her doing stuff that isn't making out. he does still hang out like normal... with his other friends. but not with el??? not even movie night dates in front of the TV??? and then in s4 he's progressed to straight up avoiding thinking about her when he isn't face to face with her??? throwing away her letters???
like king was this your idea of fixing the problem???
for a guy whose entire character seemingly revolves around his girlfriend he sure does a phenomenally bad job of having a girlfriend.
(i still have things to say abt this but they're going off on a substantial tangent about how they both behave with their friends but not each other, and this post is long enough already, so i'll split it lol)
(edit: summary of el and mike's friendships throughout the seasons here. lowkey made me depressed to write it all out and realise just how little they actually get to know each other as friends)
just for reference, the amount of work gifmakers put into taking badly-lit, murky, flat footage and turning it into something dynamic and nice to look at is astronomical
even in a relatively well-lit, color-balanced show like stranger things [don't get me STARTED on the lighting in Every Period Drama Ever] it took a ton of tweaking to take this:
to this:
bonus split view of the unedited footage and my many adjustment layers:
i don't have the files on hand so i can't tell you exactly how many adjustment layers, but there's at least four on that gif alone, and they all took fiddling around with to get right. a LOT of effort goes into cleaning up even the best footage, cropping shots, and rendering gifs, and these aren't even anything fancy—no overlays or fades, no text, no playing with colors or insets, which add on WAY more work—just gifs of the scene.
gifmakers create out of love, just like fanartists and fic writers do. reposting gifs instead of reblogging them means we don't get to see whether people enjoy what we put so much time and effort into, and it means we don't get credit for the work we put in. if you wouldn't repost fanart, please don't repost gifs either.
can someone point me towards a good post or two (or three or four) discussing that ofmd meta on ao3? i'm too curious and i want to know what it's about without actually having to read all 70k words, pure and uncut lol. basically i'm interested in an objective summary, opinions about it from rational people, maybe some good quotes pulled, etc.
