#i've only ever read one danmei in my life and that's tgcf

Hey Luta!
I noticed that you reblogged tgcf post and I was curious! How many danmeis have you read?
Would you consider maybe doing BDSM analysis for any couples you feel that have D/s dynamic? I feel like mdzs ticks boxes.
Tgcf XL and HC are pretty kinky in bed based on author's notes but since tgcf is explicit-smut-free-on-pages I don't think it could be used as an example.
I do miss your D/s analysis a lot and I love danmei so I was wondering whether you would consider doing it. 🌸
Hey Nonnie!
I've read several. I'm currently reading Thousand Autumns. After dropping SVSSS. I wanted to love it because I love all the other work by the author, I mean adore beyond measure type love. SVSSS wasn't one of them though, maybe I'm just not in that headspace, so I'm going to come back and try it again at a later date.
What I really about tgcf and mdzs is that there is actually an element of D/s that is my favorite type. A Dom with another Dom. This is called a sexual submissive though there doesn't have to be sex involved. It just means that the person is Dominate and only submissive, either strictly in bed or strictly in that relationship.
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are both Doms. Even though we see Wei Wuxian concede to his brother occasionally, he is not submissive to him. However, Wei Wuxian almost immediately recognizes Lan Wangji as the Alpha and even though he terrorizes him like only a SAM Brat could, he knows where the line is, and he isn't ever really trying to Dominate Lan Wangji.
What is fun for me with tgcf is that the D/s element isn't conventional. It's not the pretty and soft-spoken one that is the submissive. I also enjoy that Xie Lian is clueless. Xie Lian doesn't know and therefore can't recognize himself as a Dom. Even though we constantly see Hua Cheng handing himself over to Xie Lian. Not to mention that most characters just naturally follow Xie Lian's lead.
Back to Hua Cheng, though. I can just imagine how many of you are in disbelief, but think about it. Even when Hua Cheng thoroughly disagreed with Xie Lian, he simply followed or went ahead so that he could be of service. He was doing acts of service. Moreover, he sees his life as not his but his Master's, to do with as he so pleases. This is wholly different, from I would die for my loved one, it's the act of utter devotion.
I haven't read the author's notes, but I could see this being a different dynamic in the bedroom.
I'm more than happy to do a BDSM analysis on a book or show, I've just been in that weird ADHD can't decide on things mode. What were you wanting a breakdown on? 💜💜💜

Am I the only one fed up with the constant comparison between mdzs and tgcf?
When I first found out about tgcf I checked the comments to see how it was recieved by the other readers and oh my Xian Le! The whole review section was filled with people saying that it wasn't on par with mdzs! Mdzs was the first danmei book I read (couldn't ever finish it I just can't read after the confession scene I did not like the romance part a lot) and while it isn't my favourite I liked the plot so I kept myself away from tian Guan ci fi. And then after 2 years I saw its donghua airing and I thought if a donghua was being made then surely it couldn't be that bad and that was when I actually fell in love with the masterpiece this book is. I wouldn't mind if people had any actual complaints about the book but just because it's theme are not similar to mdzs that's insane. It's like you hate a mango for not being an apple. I'd like to hear everyone's opinion since I've seen this happen for way toooo long and heard absolutely no one complain against it, so is it just me who finds it problematic?
(Sorry for the rant it's just been upon my chest too long.)
both the books are brilliant in themselves and have their own shortcomings. I've never been much of a fan of mdzs but it's plot it's characters and their motivations are brilliantly written is something I would never counter. Tgcf on the other hand is not so based on people's motivations rather their reactions. How they react in certain situations and what those reasons cause. As much as I am in love with tgcf it has its own shortcoming but the very reason I love tgcf is that even with those shortcomings it makes itself a very very enjoyable and through read.
Both the books may appear similar at surface but they have very very different themes. As I said previously mdzs is more on people's motivations to do what they must. It's like you have to do what you must to survive it raises questions such as if you did what you did to survive then can what you did really be condemned since that at that point of time was the only thing you could've done. So condemning that is not right.
While tgcf on the other hand is more based on the reactions people have with their own situations and then those reactions affect things. It raises questions as what is truly correct? How do you condemn someone when what they did was truly justified by their point of view during the time that decision took place. Do you punish them? But if they were not even aware of those matters then how can they be at fault? Being oblivious while cannot be a defense in law it's a huge set back in life.
(Sorry for the rant~ haha I swear there's something wrong with me just can't seem to stop typing about books once I start.)
(I posted this on reddit too but ....people just don't stop the comparison, in a very unhealthy way.....)

Hi!Umm, I was a reader of your works on AO3 (the same one who commented on how beautiful your writing was at the end of March on “Forever and Ever”). At the time, I felt pretty bubbly about it. Your stories in general (which I know perfectly well are mostly soft porn and not replicable in real life and still enjoying them for other reasons) gave me quite a few perspectives and debates with myself (in a good way) Part 1/?
1. As a queer kid, you opened up a world to the possibility of HRT, binders, and top surgery. 2. It has helped me to identify signs of triggers and help correctly in real life and 3. It was healthy to read an autistic adult enjoying something they love to do (at least, you always seemed to enjoy writing in your notes. My lil sis is autistic, and sometimes I wonder how I could encourage her as she grows up.) Part 2/? After you told me to stay away from your AO3 - online security issues, which I appreciate because I suck at using the few social have - I kept my promise. At that time I couldn't, now I take to express my sincere apology if I was invasive (or am I? I'm starting to question writing this that I shouldn't have looked for your Tumblr:c) and/or made they uncomfortable ( I was seriously concerned and saddened that this). But this is not exactly why I searched for them after 4 months. Part 3/? Not long ago I created a Twitter account. I started following TGCF artists and other danmei accounts. Inevitably, the hashtag system led me to a danmei confession account in spanish and I said why not *shrugs* In one of his pinned tweets was a doc with a pretty nasty description. It was the callout. Part 4/? Damn, I swear it's the worst vibes text I've read in a long time (only comparable when Jun Wu act canonically being manipulative). Seriously, I've only just started getting involved in fandoms (one year and a half), and I think that scared me from getting with the english MXTX fans. The witch hunt they committed narrated as if it were a pride was quite ... hmm wtf. And when I realized that the user they were attacking was you, I look if you had answered. This brings me to the next point Part 5/? I read your POV and I truly apologize of everyone who bullied you (bc they never will). I really apologize for all the anguish he has been through. I hope that becomes a reality for a full-time commission writer in the future. I am sad that you have lost friends to something that shouldn't have happened. I really apologize for my own behavior in AO3, because the last thing they wanted to do was be a problem when they already had enough on their plate. 6/? I would really love to say “hey, I want to meet you. It doesn't matter what your status is, it's who you are” (and I mean that because you're really cool, but this is probably our only interaction anytime soon [until your consent to it]). I will truly tell you “you deserve love, and I am confident that you will find your special person(s) despite this setback”. Part 7/? I am very happy to read on your tumblr that you already feel (relatively) better about it, that you are flourishing as people, and that your transition process is going very well! It's news that makes me smile, like a queer kid. I hope that you will feel comfortable again and have many cute friends like you. Plural kisses for you! And sorry for writing so much haha. Part 8/8
(Context - this person told me they were a minor in a now-deleted AO3 comment on an M-rated fic. Also, here is my response document.)
Hello! Thank you so much for this message. 🥺❤️❤️❤️ I really appreciate it.
I'm really glad my stories have been positive for you. It means a lot to hear that, and to have confirmation that you understand that they're fiction and (especially with the ones tagged with "underage") not intended as an accurate reflection of how real life works. I do enjoy writing!! It's helped me through a lot of things, and I've had a lot of fun doing it.
Re: making me uncomfortable... if you've read my response document, you know I have P-OCD. I'm sorry I didn't explain myself much when I replied to your comment earlier, but that's a large portion of why I was uncomfortable - I understand that teenagers will seek out porn, and I sought out porn myself as a teenager and it didn't harm me, but it triggers my P-OCD to know that a specific minor has read porn I've written.
Of course, I was also concerned about your safety. It's not good to let people know you're a minor on an account where you engage with sexual content or fandoms for adult media - I've seen too many predators online who will view you as a target if you do that. But there were personal reasons involved for me as well. I really appreciate you caring about that.
You haven't broken any boundaries by sending asks to me on here! This blog is intended to be safe for anyone over 13 (Tumblr's required age) - I do mention topics like kink here from time to time, but nothing more than mentions or mild jokes (or, I think, one singular sex education post once), so I'm okay with minors interacting, with the understanding that minors are not my target audience. I would prefer not to interact anywhere other than this blog until you turn 18, but once that happens, please feel free to kudos/comment on my fics again and/or interact with me on Twitter, etc.!
I really, really appreciate you saying all of that. 🥺❤️ You absolutely don't have to apologize for writing something long. I do have a lot of wonderful people supporting me! I would not be doing so well without them.
I hope you're doing well, other than having that nasty document inflicted on you. 😐 Please stay safe on Twitter, and take care of yourself!

What is your favorite thing about Hua Cheng and Xie Lian?
I'm going to assume you mean as a couple because as individuals this answer is different but:
Its the trust. ITS THE TRUSTTTTTT!!!! I have very long had a thing for the undying loyalty trope, I'm a fucking sucker for it, it hits so so hard but tgcf decided to utterly decimate me by making it returned in equal measure?
Because while Hualian only get to properly be a battle couple (also a sucker for that trope) once, they really embody what GETS me about battle couples.
Its about the Trust, like I said. That constant feeling that the other is Safe and Reliable. Hualian had so many moments where they could have had stupid arguments, I read a lot of YA growing up and I've read SO MANY mangas and manhuas and consumed quite a bit of romcoms. It is a STAPLE of the romance genre I immerse myself in (though I suppose I don't know for danmei since tgcf is my only one) for couples to have AT LEAST one stupid misunderstanding/argument but Hualian DOESNT!!! THEY DONT!!! Because when issues come up they always trust each other and think about the other person's side of things and talk about it. Sure they have things they don't perfectly communicate about but they don't let it become something that keeps them from trusting each other.
Its about the Understanding. They're in sync. They're on the same page. Its why they can flit around perfectly beside one another in battle. Its the easy and simple insertion of someone else into your life. The knowing how to move around the kitchen without bumping into each other. The noticing small mood shifts or anticipating needs.
Its about the Vulnerability that trust and understanding breeds. Because Hualian's entire relationship arc is about them learning to rely on someone else. Its about XL learning that forever does still exist and someone wants to be there for him and he doesn't have to save everyone but if he does he can at least have someone who WILL listen when he calls out that it hurts. Its about HC learning he doesn't have to constantly be strong and capable at all times because he is loved even when he brings nothing but himself to the table. It's about getting to be childish and finally being enough even with all your past mistakes.
And that undying loyalty trope that I adore so much in many a romance I have consumed? I've never minded that it was a little unbalanced most times. I've never minded that it can have a little bit of a power imbalance. But by the time Hualian gets married its NOT unbalanced. HC has loved for 800 years, truly undying loyalty with no expectation to ever have that returned. But XL loves in equal measure. He trusts HC to near stupid degrees. We know from the birthday extra that his heart races every time he so much as thinks of his husband (AND THAT HE CANT STOP THINKING OF HIM!) It's undying loyalty returned in equal measure with so much trust and desire to understand each other always and cultivating a space where they can be vulnerable around each other even if only for a little bit while the rest of the world is burning down around them.
Hualian is an insufferable mall couple, constantly clinging to each other and being overly cute all the time and they're SO FILLED WITH JOY! They are unabashedly in love and its not in the big grand gestures or the dramatic plot that that love is found. "Hualian makes everything a date" because their love is found in small places. It's found in cooking poisonous food and having calligraphy lessons. It's found in fixing up the shrine or talking about nothing at all. They are a sweeping, larger than life fantasy romance that is based on the small ways people can love. That is based on trust. That thrives in domesticity.
Hualian are both convinced their greatest accomplishment in life is marrying the other. They are both convinced they are the one who married out of their league. There is just so much joy that radiates from their relationship and it brings me joy to see that.

Random ask, do you think Ultimate Note (C-drama) is worth watching? Is it from dmbj? I read somewhere that it is not danmei like MDZS or TGCF, is it true?
Okay... for whom I was obsessing about pingxie here and doing like 5 edits in a raw about it? Haha. Yes, of course, it's worth it. And yes, it's the Daomu Biji series. As I've said already it's technically not a danmei no, it's a series of the adventure books with a BL couple in it, that is as epic as wangxian yes. It is a very VERY popular chinese bl pairing that everyone ships for like 10 years now. Despite them not being together yet and one of them realizing that their relationship are romantic only like 12 books after now that he's very-very ill (do not worry, "Reboot" other part of the show was a bit rewritten by author from the book to give them a happy ending, bc books aren't finished yet and he jokes that he's gonna finish maybe in 2050), the story and their story is absolutely incredible, I'm 100% sure you'll fall in love not only with them, but with the world, other characters and iron triangle and will be gone forever! *evil laugh*
Anyways "Ultimate Note" is as gay as can be yes, but.. BUT "Ultimate Note" is not the beginning of the story and you won't get anything if you just start watching it. It starts from book 5 actually and follows to book 8, the time when they were almost always together in the books (other than that their story is full of painful separations, painful longing, constant search for each other to usual fav chinese major 10 or smth years of full on pain), so you have to either read first books first or just read the main info you need to know before that. Bc even tho there are many adaptations, they're very chaotic and some are such bad quality that I'd rather skip on those. "Untimate Note" and "Reboot" are most well known bc they're on another quality level. They're both gayer than the book, but the second one does include slight cencorship, first one none at all haha. UN tho is much brighter than the original book, I mean books are quite crass.
Anyways, you gotta do like a minimum research for sure, but better just read first books, then watch UN, then continue reading up to the bronze gate separation, then happily watch reunion in "Reboot" and happy ending hehe (that if you won't get addicted like me and want to continue the torture) xD
Look at them look, look, look. Their love story is super great, chemistry is incredible, so if you miss your epic chinese gay love stories, yes, that's the right adress <3 In fact again they're in my top 3 ships along with wangxian and that's with the fact that they still haven't gotten together (and maybe never will, who knows), only shared a "kiss" of life underwater and fucking ripped my heart by being the most idiotic idiots ever, but believe me it's worth it. You must've heard, they're the legendary "I found my only connection with this world... it's you." morons lmao
It also has a beautiful donhua based on book 3, too.
But also again small reminder that romance is not the focus of these books, so despite the fact that they're truly incredible and have this red-string of fate kinda relationships, its not exactly the same thing as danmei novels (its same tho xD).
But also I know what you ask here, and yes, "Ultimate Note" is indeed as a c-drama on the same gay level as your usual danmei c-dramas yes. You will love them, trust me. Also chemistry oh such chemistry, rare thing to find. In both ;)

二哈和他的白猫师尊 2Ha
Tumblr media
Title: 二哈和他的白猫师尊 / Èr hā hé tā de bái māo shī zūn / 2Ha / The Husky and His White Cat Shizun Author: 肉包不吃肉 / Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat
This novel is the very definition of don't judge a book by it's cover, title, and even author name. 2Ha is not fluffy. Although, well, it is fluffy in some instances. And the title is also sort of accurate. And the author name sounds funny and interesting which this story also is. Anyway, if you're confused and intrigued, I just want to say that 2Ha is the most daring, crazy, funny, angsty novel I've ever read. And that, my friends, is why this ranks as the top of my favorite danmei list so far.
2Ha is the story of Mo Ran who dies and leaves his somewhat tyrannical life and is reborn into the past. With his memories still intact, he lives to right the wrongs he thinks he made and vows revenge on his shizun whom he blames is the reason for him growing up into a tyrant. But all is not that simple when he finds out bits and pieces of the truth along the way of what happened to lead him to become a tyrant and that apparently, he's not the only one who got reborn into the past.
Okay, first of all, you've probably noticed by now that there is nothing in the summary about a dog and a cat. The title actually describes Mo Ran being the husky and Chu Wanning, his shizun, being the white cat. It describes Mo Ran's relationship with Chu Wanning as being like an adorable dumb dog with a snobbish, anti-social, somewhat arrogant cat so you can just imagine how that'd be like. (But really, I love them both a lot and think these two are so perfect together).
The plot in this story is craaazy. Like, it's really out of this world. The further you get into it, the more insane it gets. And I love it. The fact that it's crazy is the reason why I was able to push through and finish it even if the second half of this novel at the time I was reading it was only machine translated. As of this writing, this novel has only been translated until Chapter 152, I think. But the story is so intriguing and interesting, hair-raising, and so entertaining that I wanted to finish it to know how it ends.
But it's not for everyone. The themes in this novel is very dark. The translators were kind enough to warn you in every chapter that 2Ha has a lot of violence, murder, suicide, underage sex, rape, explicit sex, drugs, and more. So yes, it's not at all fluffy like the title or book cover makes it out to be.
So why did I even like it? Because it was interesting. The dark side of the story were all necessary. All the warnings there play a big part in this whole story. If you were to separate it from the story, you won't be able to get the complexities of Mo Ran's character and how you feel about him as you read through the entire novel. I've seen a lot of takes how maybe 2Ha can do without that much dark themes but in my opinion, it had to be there and it was important for readers to go through it to better understand and feel for the characters.
Meatbun is a very talented writer. I like the way she made you feel things just through the scenarios and words she puts out. She makes you laugh so hard at the funny scenes, enough that my sister from across the room would stare at me as I read and laughed out loud by myself. She makes you want to pull the two main leads together and bonk their heads or something. She makes you horny lmao and I say this as a compliment because the good sex scenes in here makes you pine after the two leads to just get it on. She twists your heart into making it hurt so bad at the sad scenes that even if I deem myself an emotionally strong person and wouldn't tear up easily over sad movies and stories, I admittedly shed a tear at this one. She made me feel so deeply in love with Mo Ran and Chu Wanning, and even the side characters like Xue Meng, his aunt and uncle, and more. It's like you want to reach down into the novel and save them all yourself so they don't have to suffer anymore.
But don't worry. I don't read novels that don't have a happy ending. So even if this is a bit spoilery, this novel ended on a good note. And I think I've mentioned this in one of my reviews that I like a story where it just twists your soul and your heart and then puts it back again. This is it. This is how 2Ha made me feel.
So do I recommend it? Yes! 2Ha is a favorite and is right up there with TGCF as one of my favorites. It has a crazy yet incredibly written plot that all comes together in the end. But do not push yourself to read this if you don't think you can handle the themes and warnings mentioned above.
Score: 10/10

TGCF donghua Special Episode Thoughts (SPOILERS for episode & novel!)
Favorite moment:
Tumblr media
Of COURSE that amazing ending sequence, which is the mirror of Dianxia's backstory at the end of the first episode, except this time from Hua Cheng's point of view. Speaking of, holy mother of YUM, dear gods, Hua Cheng:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this "hideous" man. I am DROOLING.
Funny thing is, I didn't even know his appearance was supposed to be a secret, that we technically hadn't seen his face yet all this time. I remember we had a super quick glimpse of him in the Banyue pit and I thought that was his reveal, that that'll be all we'll get for now and I was fine with that...that is, until this ending sequence happened and we actually see him in his entirety. My eyes will forever never be the same. What was I even thinking??? The flashes in the pit were absolutely inferior to the real thing. No comparison. He is so gorgeous; I can't WAIT for Xie Lian to meet him next season.
Tumblr media
Second favorite moment:
What I love about this scene is first of all it features some of my favorite lines from the novel, "If you don't know what to live for, then just live for me. If you don't know the meaning of life, then take me as the meaning your life." Even though Dianxia was playing it up for dramatic effect, I loved how he crawled towards San Lang and then uttered the lines with such conviction. I LOVED the way the music reached a cresendo during his words--hell, I love the music in this entire episode, this entire show, period. I also love how bittersweet this scene is: here Dianxia is so embarrassed by his own words that he even laughs about them, dismisses them, not know just how much of an effect they had on the person he said them to, how they really did serve to motivate that person to live on, to exist, utterly for him. Not knowing at all that that person he said what he now thinks were silly words to is right in front of him. The irony!
I'm still making my way through the book so I haven't gotten to the part where all is revealed to Xie Lian yet, but I can only imagine how shocking and emotional this particular revelation would be. It'll probably be ten years before we get to see all that in the donghua, if we ever do, but I'm gonna keep on crossing my fingers and hoping.
Tumblr media
"I swear, whether in Heaven or or on Earth, you cannot find someone more sincere than me". The subs left out the Heaven or Earth part but it's still such a good line. Love also how San Lang precedes that by trying to reach out to touch Dianxia but is like too afraid to. The donghua really captured his feelings of...I guess I'd call it timid inferiority...so well.
Tumblr media
I have a strong suspicion what that ring is (irl, I've seen companies advertising turning ashes into diamonds as a keepsake of your loved ones...never tried it so I don't know if it's the real deal or some kind of scam) and I cannot wait to get to that revelation as well. Putting aside the potential significance of this momento, the fact that Hua Cheng left Dianxia a ring to wear around his neck is already a beautiful gesture on its own.
Tumblr media
I already miss seeing how San Lang looks adoringly at Xie Lian. In fact, I think I'm going to miss San Lang for quite a while since next season I think we'll be mostly spending time with Hua Cheng. Not complaining at all since Hua Cheng will no doubt look at Dianxia just as adoringly, but I will miss this cute guy.
Tumblr media
Also already missing the cuteness that is Dianxia. I love all his expressions...the way he said "San Lang" just made my heart explode. How can he be this adorable??? Really, bravo to Jiang Guangtao-laoshi, his voice actor, for such an endearing voice performance. I actually started listening to the Qiang Jin Jiu audio drama because I've become a fan. Imagine Xie Lian being super seductive all the time. That's the ear candy I'm enjoying now, even though I only understand like less than half of the plot due to my shoddy Chinese comprehension.
Tumblr media
Proud of how San Lang didn't just lose it when Dianxia cradled his face like that. This man really has unbelievable self control.
Tumblr media
I loved that they were chatting in bed like an old married couple. I'm sure this is a glimpse into their future married life. 😁
Besides SanLian, I know Banyue was in this episode as well, I still think she's adorable and love her voice, and I'm glad she gets to enjoy a torture-free life now (I am assuming she does).
I'm glad we got this special episode to really close out the season, but I'm still kinda confused as to why we didn't get it at the actual end of the season but rather as an odd stand alone episode like this. Obviously it picked up right where the 11th episode left off, so it would've slotted in perfectly well. I was hoping the reason they held on to it was because they were going to attach a teaser PV for the next season, but alas that wasn't the case. I wonder if they just needed more time to finish the episode. I still don't quite understand how the Chinese donghua industry works: for something seemingly as popular as TGCF, you would think they'd have good enough budget and resources to finish episodes in time and to make more than just 12 episodes. There are other donghua shows I've seen on Bilibili that have blown way past 12 episodes, so I don't understand why they have to stubbornly stick to a dozen only for something like TGCF. Or is it a danmei thing, I wonder. They just don't want to devote the time and resources to danmei shows beyond just 12 episodes? So weird. Again, VERY GRATEFUL we're getting a second season. SINCERELY praying that we get many more seasons after so that eventually they'll finish out the book. God I hope I finish reading before the donghua team finishes putting out the show.
And that brings me to: Current Reading Progress...chapter 160. Look, I'm gonna be honest, I'm just not a fan of the whole jinx demon concept or the Brocade Immortal. I know all mysteries of the week lead back to the gods and their backstory, but as CONCEPTS, I was just NOT into them so I constantly got distracted. I know MXTX-laoshi was under a LOT of pressure from both censorship and just ridiculous deadlines (I was told she had to produce a chapter a day, which is INSANE), so I feel like a douchebag for even thinking anything negative about the book...not to mention I'm only on Book 3 still so maybe all of this will be wrapped up nicely at the end. But for now, yeah, those two as ideas are a bit underwhelming and almost silly (especially the Brocade Immortal) and maybe I don't need the backstory of ALL the gods. Anyway, before anyone yells at me, there's always a chance I might change my mind about all this by the end...which I hope to get to soon. Didn't finish the book in time for this special episode which was my goal, so readjusting the goalpost back a little further...hopefully just a tad...like a few weeks, because I DO want to get to the unrelenting pain soon so that I can get through the suffering and finally to the HuaLian happily ever after ending.
