1,850-Year-Old Bronze Roman Coin Discovered on Israeli Beach
The coin was minted in Alexandria, Egypt, in the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius and contains the image of the Cancer zodiac sign and the moon goddess Luna.
A bronze Roman coin dating back 1,850 years with the symbol of the Cancer zodiac sign and a moon goddess was just discovered in the Carmel Beach in Haifa by archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).
The coin was specifically discovered as part of a survey of the area in an effort to find antiques and save them from degradation.
This isn't the oldest Roman-era coin discovered - in fact, coins from the earlier Bar Kokhba revolt were found in Jerusalem two years ago. However, this coin was found in the water, is in remarkably good condition and its engravings shed considerable light on its origins and what it is meant to depict.
Israel in the Roman era
The coins used as money by the Romans were minted from gold, silver, bronze, copper and orichalcum - though historians are unclear as to what exactly the latter one is.
Over time, especially in the closing days of the Roman Republic and throughout the Roman Empire, these coins also contained a number of icons and writings.
This coin in particular is no exception, and the writing on it tells us exactly when the coin was minted, in year eight of the reign of Antoninus Pius, and where it was minted, Alexandria in Egypt.
Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from 138 CE to 161 CE, so this would have been minted in either 144 CE or 145 CE.
Pius's reign was well remembered and historians note him as one of the Five Good Emperors - alongside Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius - that presided over Rome's great golden age of Pax Romana. This is despite the fact that Pius wasn't a military man like many other notable Roman emperors and in fact his long reign was largely peaceful. Rather, his great strengths were in his skilled administration of the large empire, a profitable economy with a massive surplus in the empire's coffers and for his work as a progressive legal reformer. In fact, the administrative role Pius held was of such paramount importance to his reign that many historians believe he never actually left the city of Rome.
Pius's reign also saw him rule over what is now the State of Israel, with the Bar Kokhba revolt having ended just two years prior to his reign. This was important as it was now up to him to improve relations between the empire and the Jews, following the revolt and the many decrees of his predecessor, Hadrian, that had been extremely unpopular among the Jews, such as the ban on circumcision.
Pius was able to do this, however, and ties between Rome and the Jews improved. In fact, the Talmud even notes the close friendship between Antoninus Pius and the leader of the Jews in the Levant, Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi. Having said that, this is something some historians debate, as the Talmud just refers to an emperor known as Antoninus which could refer to either Pius's successor Marcus Aurelius, whose full name was Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, or Caracalla, whose full name was also Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, though his birth name was Luciuus Septimius Bassianus.
His image has been found on coins in Israel before, too. One such coin from this era was found in 2021. It, too, contains the image of Antoninus Pius, with the other side containing the image of the Syrian moon god Men and the inscription "of the people of Geva Phillipi" and the date of the civic year 217, which would be 158 CE or 159 CE.
What was on the coin?
In addition to explaining when and where it was minted, the coin also included symbols.
On one side was the image of Antoninus Pius himself along with the inscription.
The other side contained two symbols. One of them was a crab, the zodiac sign of Cancer. The other side was the moon goddess, Luna.
The inclusion of Cancer seemed to have been due to the coin being part of a series of coins with zodiac symbols.
Luna, however, is another story - but far from unprecedented.
Iconography in Roman coins tended to depict emperors and images of gods. This served to both spread the image and name of the emperor to the wider empire and associate him with a divine figure.
Luna was also important to the Roman Empire for another reason, as it was this goddess, along with the sun god Sol, that was used by the empire to represent Roman rule over the world as well as a guarantee of peace.
Its presence in the Carmel Beach
As Israel has been a pillar of the ancient world and has been ruled by numerous kingdoms and empires throughout history, it is no surprise that it is host to a wide range of archaeological finds, some of which are incredibly ancient.
However, as noted by IAA maritime archaeology unit director Yaakov Shavit, this is the first time something like this was found in Israeli waters.
"Along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the State of Israel and its maritime area, there are many archaeological sites and finds that tell of connections that exited here in ancient times between the ports of the Mediterranean and the many countries along its shores," Shavit said in a statement.
"These findings, which sunk into the abyss and disappeared from sight for hundreds and thousands of years, were preserved in an amazing way... and their discovery completes pieces of the historical puzzle of Israel's history." Indeed, the discovery of this coin also reflects ever-changing perception of the sea in Israel and the vast importance it serves.
"In the last decade, Israel has been changing its perception of the sea," IAA director Eli Escozido explained. "Now, it is already clear that the sea is not the border of Israel, but is a significant part of it, in security, strategy and economics - and also in is heritage. It's home to natural treasures and cultural assets that must be explored and protected."
The finding of this coin, Escozido explained, is a "spectacular reminder" of the maritime archaeological survey.
Indeed, as the sea and its many aspects and resources, from security to natural gas and trade, become more important to Israel, it is worth remembering the host of ancient treasures and historic relics that could be lurking within its watery depths.

CSIC completes the first network of robotic telescopes present on the five continents Spain becomes the first country in the world to lead a global network of autonomous observatories. The BOOTES network, with seven facilities, is a pioneer in space surveillance and the study of transient cosmic phenomena, which shine briefly, intensely “BOOTES is the result of almost twenty-five years of continuous effort, since we installed the first station in 1998 at INTA (Arenosillo, Huelva), the institution that initially supported the project. The complete deployment represents a scientific milestone since it is the first robotic network with a presence on all continents", according to Alberto J. Castro-Tirado, scientist at IAA-CSIC acting as Principal Investigator since the very beginning. This is ahead of the American project, whose Asian station is under construction, and the Russian one, which is lacking an installation in Oceania. The BOOTES network is managed by the IAA-CSIC, with strong involvement of the University of Malaga and in collaboration with other Spanish and international institutions. Its main objective is to quickly and autonomously observe what are known as transient sources, astrophysical objects that do not present a permanent emission over time, but rather emit light briefly, intensely and suddenly. The detection of these events is usually done from satellite, and BOOTES provides an automated response in real time that allows their characterization. The network will contribute to the study of gamma-ray bursts, which are the most energetic events in the universe and are associated with the death of very massive stars. Its detection usually occurs through satellites, which inform the scientific community of the outbreak so that the event can be studied in detail. The existence of a network of very fast pointing robotic telescopes such as BOOTES represents an ideal complement to satellite detection and, in fact, BOOTES will also work to track and monitor neutrino sources and objects that emit gravitational waves, or even objects such as comets, asteroids, variable stars or supernovae. But it will also keep an eye on the sky, both in tracking space debris and potentially dangerous objects that may pose a threat to our planet. High impact science with BOOTES Fast-tracking observations of gamma-ray bursts with BOOTES, from the first few seconds to the final phases, have enabled narrowing models of gamma-ray bursts, and have also contributed to some high-impact results in recent years. One of the observatories of the BOOTES network was, for example, the only Spanish station that observed in 2017 the event known as GW170817, the first detection of a gravitational wave electromagnetic counterpart in history. The phenomenon responsible for this emission, the merger of two neutron stars, allowed the first simultaneous study in light and gravitational waves for the first time and inaugurated a new era in astronomical observations. BOOTES contributed in 2020 to the identification of a very short duration radio burst-producing source in our own galaxy, the Milky Way, which was presented in three papers in Nature which suggested that a magnetar, a neutron star with a very intense magnetic field, would be behind this phenomenon. In 2021, BOOTES also contributed to the research work published in Nature, of different pulses in the giant magnetic flare of a neutron star: in just a tenth of a second, a magnetar released an energy equivalent to that produced by the Sun in a hundred thousand years, and its detailed analysis revealed multiple pulses at the peak of the eruption, which shed light on these still little-known giant magnetic flares. “The culmination of the network is a success, since it has been possible with a human team and a much lower budget than similar projects. With four stations in the northern hemisphere and three in the southern hemisphere, there will always be at least one telescope covering the northern and southern skies, making it extremely efficient in detecting transient sources. In addition, with all the stations already operational, we can coordinate them as a single observatory that covers the entire planet, the potential of which we will show to the international community at the robotic astrophysics congress that we hold biannually and that will take place in October in Malaga”, points out Castro-Tirado (IAA-CSIC). “I conceived the project when I was developing my doctoral thesis in Denmark thirty years ago, and for me it is a dream come true”, concludes the researcher. I reported GIISDEC rot to the CID - Deputy CEO GIISDEC
New Post has been published on https://plugzafrica.com/i-reported-giisdec-rot-to-the-cid-deputy-ceo-giisdec/
I reported GIISDEC rot to the CID - Deputy CEO GIISDEC
Tumblr media
The Deputy CEO of Operations at the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC), Kwame Addo Asirifi, has confirmed the petition by some staff citing rot regarding salary discrepancies at GIISDEC as correct.
He revealed this to a reporter in a telephone conversation on Thursday,April 4, 2024, saying that he personally reported the anomalies regarding salary discrepancies to the CID this year. “I know the concerns raised by the staff. I personally reported the matter to the CID of the Police Service, and the Internal Auditor (Francis Bekoe) and the Finance Director (Prince Ofoso Baakoh) were arrested and are on police inquiry bail because it’s  criminal,” he revealed.
Background
Information reaching the author indicated that the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) has been embroiled in a scandal involving mismanagement of public funds and accusing fingers being pointed at the highest levels of leadership.
Documents available revealed a series of inappropriate financial practices, including increases in employees’ salaries, which do not in any way reach the benefactors, with the difference running into several millions of Ghanaian cedis, which are unaccounted for.
Referencing the documents intercepted, Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) at its inception sought the assistance of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to develop a compensation plan and a salary structure that was benchmarked with Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation.
However, a letter dated December 7, 2020, for compensation structure issued by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) for staff condition of service annulled the earlier arrangement with FWSC. As a result, staff were subsequently placed on Step 1 of the Ministry of Finance compensation structure, with the instruction not to vary the same for two years. It was then that financial clearance was given to 48 staff, including all the government executive appointees, with a total monthly compensation package of GHC 528,816, which remained the same between September 2020 and December 2021.
Further checks of the document show that in 2022, workers detected that staff compensation had risen to GHC 681,204, an average increase of 28.82%, but staff salaries remained unchanged. Investigations into the matter revealed that the Director of Finance used Step 3 of the MoF salary structure throughout the 2022 fiscal year for staff compensation packages, a situation that compelled the workers to ask questions.
When this detected discrepancy in salary was brought to the attention of management, the Director of Finance, Prince Ofosu Baakoh, on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kwabena Bonsu Fordwor, and the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Finance and Administration, Nicholas Andoh, acknowledged the discrepancies but were quick to explain that it was an arrangement to cater for some twenty (20) contract staff who do not have financial clearance, as well as other payments for goods and services.
This explanation did not go down well with the staff, as they felt disrespected and cheated. The reason, according to the staff, is that, in the books of the Ministry of Finance, the workers have been migrated from the Step 1 salary structure to Step 3, but in actual fact, these workers are being paid by the management of GIISDEC using Step 1.
The document revealed that the difference in compensation not remitted to the qualified staff in 2022 alone was a staggering GHC 1.832 million. The said documents, which have also been corroborated by Metrotvonline, indicate that the exact amount of money was allegedly captured in the Internal Audit Agency’s (IAA) preliminary audit report.
What is more disturbing is that checks reveal that in 2023, the Step 3 salary structure was upwardly adjusted by 15% for compensation requests, which were granted and approved by the MoF. Unfortunately, workers were still paid using Step 1, denying them what was rightfully theirs.
Some concerned employees who felt let down have begun to speak, and it has been confirmed that the total monthly compensation throughout the year 2023 stood at GHC 791,414, a reflection of a 49.66% increment between 2020 and 2023; however, staff salaries remained the same over the period in question. Compensation analysis computed for the year 2023 established that a staggering amount of GHC 1.45 million had not been distributed to staff with the same excuse given by management. “The difference is used to settle the compensation of 20 contract workers and other expenses.”.
The above notwithstanding, there have been some illegal deductions from workers’ salaries, which have compelled GIISDEC staff to report the issue to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which led to the arrest of the Director of Finance, Prince Ofosu Baakoh, and Internal Auditor, Francis Bekoe, by the Financial Forensic Unit of the Police CID.
We also chanced on a letter dated March 14, 2024, in which a staff member of GIISDEC caused his solicitors to petition the board, drawing their attention to illegal deductions amounting to over GHC400,000 from his salary and asking that the same be paid back to him as he rightfully earned. But this petition appears to have fallen on deaf ears, signaling a legal battle and potential judgment debt.
Again, another disappointed and unsatisfied staff member told this reporter in confidence about a letter he presented to the Office of Special Prosecutor to investigate what he called the “fraudulent dealings” of some persons in management positions.
Amidst this turmoil, it has come to light that the corporation has been operating without proper oversight, with no board meetings held for three consecutive quarters, leaving GIISDEC in an “auto-flying mode.” The last time the board met was in the second quarter of 2023, inside sources reveal.
As the gravity of the situation unfolds, calls for accountability and transparency have intensified. These concerned staff of GIISDEC are directing the Chief Executive Officer to rectify outstanding payments and implement a fair compensation structure based on MoF guidelines. All attempts to reach the CEO, Kwabena Bonsu Fordwor, to seek clarity on the matter have proved futile.

The China National Space Agency (CNSA) has drawn a lot of attention to its space programs in recent years. In addition to their Tiangong space station and crewed missions to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), there’s also been a lot of buzz surrounding the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) and its Human Lunar Space Program. The high points have included the announcement of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) – a joint operation with Roscosmos – and shared concept art for their next-generation spacecraft and lunar lander. As always, what we know about China’s plans for space exploration is limited to snippets of news, public statements, and the occasional video, which are the direct result of state-controlled media and tight secrecy regarding the country’s space program. The latest is a bootleg video that recently appeared online, which shows a video presentation that provides some insight into China’s long-term plans for crewed lunar exploration. The video is captioned with the words “China’s lunar space station and development of lunar molten cave base plan,” and it certainly lives up to that description! The video presents several familiar elements of lunar exploration, which have been hinted at in the past by the CMSA and the Manned Lunar Deep Exploration Project Office. These include a modular station in lunar orbit, robotic missions exploring the surface to scout resources and locate a base site, lunar landers, and facilities that will grow food, provide power, and facilitate crewed missions to explore the surface. In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) and using robots equipped with additive manufacturing (3D printers) are also alleged from the imagery alone. Lunar Base in Orbit The video, uploaded by YouTube user Chen Junlong, opens with a spacecraft rendezvousing with an orbiting lunar habitat. Immediately, this tells us that China hopes to create an orbital platform that will rival NASA’s Lunar Gateway, which has been hinted at in the ILRS mission architecture. This includes the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) Guide for Partnership released in 2021, which describes the ILRS as “a complex experimental research [facility] to be constructed with [the] possible [involvement] of partners on the surface and/or in orbit of the Moon.“ An orbital element is further detailed in Section 1 (“Facilities Description”), where there is the mention of a Cislunar Transportation Facility in addition to a Long-term Support Facility on the Lunar Surface. According to the guide, the former will “support cislunar round-trip transfer between the Earth and the Moon, lunar orbiting, soft landing, ascending on [the] lunar surface and re-entry to the Earth.” Whereas the Gateway will be placed in a “halo orbit” around the Moon (orbiting from pole to pole), the Chinese facility is shown orbiting the lunar equator. Lava Tube Habitat In the video, this habitat is also a staging area for creating a subsurface habitat – the “lunar molten cave base.” For years, NASA has researched the possibility of building bases inside these tubes since they are accessible via “skylights” (holes in the surface) and are large enough to accommodate entire bases. They can also maintain comfortable room temperature conditions inside and provide natural shielding against radiation. China has also indicated that they are exploring the possibility of building a base inside lunar lava tubes. At the 10th CSA-IAA Conference on Advanced Space Technology in September, representative Zhang Chongfeng from the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology presented a study that detailed fieldwork where his colleagues and planetary geologists explored several lava caves in China. According to Zhang, this research could lead to bases constructed in Mare Tranquillitatis (the Sea of Tranquility), where the Apollo 11 astronauts landed, and Mare Fecunditatis (the Sea of Fertility), both of which are located in the eastern half of the visible side of the Moon. However, rather than using a natural skylight, Chinese explorers created one in the video using a penetrator launched from the station. Once the debris is cleared and the robots explore the cave below, we then see the core module of the lunar base deploying from the orbiting habitat. It then lands in the artificial skylight and deploys infrastructure into the cave, including inflatable cabin sections that appear to be a greenhouse and a research module. Meanwhile, the core deploys another inflatable module on the surface around the artificial skylight, which a robotic 3D printer proceeds to fashion a dome over. Both modules are equipped with double-layer airlocks, providing the crew access to the surface and subsurface. This is followed by the creation of a solar array and other platforms that accommodate radio receivers, a vehicle bay (Lunar Transportation and Operation Facility in the ILRS guide), and a landing pad for lunar landers. The remaining footage details the allocation of space inside the habitat for different operations (research, sleeping, exercise) and how a central elevator connects the surface and subsurface sections. We also get a brief glimpse at what operations taikonauts will perform, which includes growing plants, conducting EVAs on the surface, and exploring =lunar caves. Lunar Landers This brings up another key element of China’s lunar program, which is the lander that will transport crews to and from the surface. However, the lander featured here does not resemble the one China recently unveiled, which will be used to send the first taikonauts to the lunar surface by 2030. But from the footage, this lander is clearly not reusable either, consisting of a descent and ascent module – similar to the lunar landers used by the Apollo astronauts. The video also hints (very briefly) at the end that these lunar facilities will enable future missions to Mars. This is similar to what NASA has stated about the Artemis Program and the “Moon to Mars” mission architecture that preceded it. In previous statements, China has indicated that it intends to send crewed missions to Mars starting in 2033, the same timeline proposed by NASA. Under the circumstances, it makes sense that they would be adopting a similar Moon-to-Mars architecture with the ILRS. This constitutes the most detailed vision of China’s proposed lunar program to date. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds in the coming years! Author’s note: The origin and authenticity of the video are unclear, which is exacerbated by the fact that it is a recording of a video presentation (i.e. a bootleg). Nevertheless, the content certainly looks authentic and aligns with a lot of previous statements by the CNSA. Take it with a grain of salt!
Xpeng says it plans to expand into more European markets next year
Tumblr media
At the IAA Mobility motor show in Munich, Xpeng, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, unveiled plans to expand its presence in several European markets, including Germany, Britain, and France, by 2024, as shared by President Brian Gu during a press briefing on Monday.
Furthermore, the company intends to introduce its G9 and P7 electric vehicles into the Israeli market starting early next year, with the G6 becoming its first right-hand drive model offering.
Having an ambitious strategy to venture into the global market
Brian Gu emphasized, “We have an ambitious strategy to venture into the global market.” Presently, the company already has a presence in the Netherlands and Norway. Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are actively pursuing expansion in Europe, aiming to achieve improved profit margins and accelerated growth in international markets while competing with European counterparts by offering more affordable vehicle options.
It’s worth noting that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers have been contending with a challenging domestic price competition environment that has impacted their profitability and limited growth. Although they have experienced rapid sales growth in Southeast Asia and South America, the European market has posed unique difficulties for Chinese automotive brands. These challenges include navigating European regulations, establishing electric vehicle infrastructure, aligning with European consumer preferences, and building brand recognition.
Despite experiencing recent fluctuations in its financial performance that have correlated with company developments, XPeng Motors is actively pursuing an expansion of its global electric vehicle (EV) offerings. As per statements from the Chinese automaker’s president earlier today, XPeng is set to commence sales in three additional European markets starting in the upcoming year.
Establishing brand recognition and gaining insights
XPeng initially entered the European market through Norway, introducing its P7 sedan and commencing initial deliveries during the summer of 2021. Subsequently, there were indications that the automaker intended to expand its overseas presence by introducing the G9 SUV.
By February 2022, XPeng had solidified retail agreements in new markets such as the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The objective was to establish brand recognition and gain insights into the unique needs of customers in these markets in preparation for official sales.
Since then, XPeng has unveiled a refreshed version of the P7 for 2023, which joined the G9 in these European markets, with sales commencing earlier this year. Additionally, the company has been establishing a network of service centers in these regions. Brian Gu, the Vice Chairman and President of XPeng, has already promised further expansions on the horizon.
Today, at the IAA Mobility event in Munich, XPeng Motors has disclosed the specific new markets it has in its sights for future expansion.
