just in case anyone missed this in the news or maybe not in the loop, Disney is currently refusing to meet with or acknowledge the newly formed animation production workers union that just voted to join IASTE and become an official part of TAG, the animators and animation artists guild
production workers across all studios are currently voting to be recognized for their hard work and invaluable skill at keeping these productions running, but studios are refusing to meet with them to let them negotiate deals or even exist
as someone who works in animation as a designer i know i wouldn't be able to do my job at all without any of my production workers. they are the incredibly hard working people who oversee pretty much everything in animation. they make sure everything is running on time, that schedules are being followed, they have to know pretty much every single word of the scripts and beats from the storyboards to make sure nothing is missed, and most importantly, they make sure artists are being taken care of and not overworked. they really are the unsung heroes of the animation world
production workers are also by far the most exploited workers in animation currently. they make about a fraction of what artists make for just as much work put in, and currently have no agreement for health coverage or other benefits that artists protected by the union are guaranteed
BUT! there is some good news. right now there's a petition on IATSE's website that has over 80,000 signatures currently addressed to disney leadership to do the right thing and meet with this new union and recognized their vote to form. it still needs roughly 21,000 signatures and only takes a minute to sign! anyone with a zip or postal code can sign, meaning both US and Canadian residents can sign and help this union get the deal it deserves!!

There's lots of stuff happening at once so have a round up:
Warner Bros and Cartoon Network animation production (various) roles are working to join The Animation Guild. [edited to clarify] “Although many might not think it, production is a specialized skill,” said Warner Bros. Animation production manager, Hannah Ferenc in an official statement. “We might not be artists or writers, but what we bring to the table goes beyond traditional creativity and gets content on the air.”
Further edit for clarity: the unionization effort is for animation production roles (not animators, who are already unionized), to bring production staff into The Animation Guild at WB and CN.
Also I'm going to point out Animation is often an under-appreciated form of media, often looked down on as lesser, or less worthy, or less high quality than live action and I'm a fan of Animation. So I extra want to voice my support for the WB and CN production staff + animators, and everyone who works in animation for all the beautiful work they do in every facet.
UPS agreed to go back and negotiate with the Teamsters union, prepared to increase pay/benefits. Tentatively...I hope this is a hopeful sign for the labor movement, and for the Hollywood strikes as well. If UPS saw the way the wind was blowing, could that make Hollywood companies feel more pressure. UPS is a massive corporation. Granted, Hollywood studios are multiple big corporations, but maybe this doesn't bode well for them stonewalling the SAG and WGA.
IATSE Local 798--Broadway makeup and hair stylists union--is voting whether or not to authorize a strike, after talks with Broadway League (the producers association) and Disney Theatrical Productions stalled. There's a very informative video embedded in the blog post from Kevin Thomas Garica, who worked on Hadestown and Anastasia. Yes, Broadway could shut down.

IATSE is ready to go on strike if upcoming contract negotiations with the studios don’t go their way. The guild will begin negotiating two major labor contracts with the AMPTP next month, the Basic Agreement and the Area Standards Agreement. Both current contracts are set to expire on July 31. New campaign websites for each lay out the timelines that IATSE expects, both before and after negotiations begin. Within those timelines, IATSE is making it clear that there will either be an agreement, or the union will look to its members for a potential strike authorization vote. If an agreement isn’t reached by July 31, IATSE’s websites state “The Negotiating Committee is not interested in extending this agreement.”

hi there! as an industry [film/tv] professional, i have to say, it's insane things have lasted this long. at any point, the AMPTP could have decided to negotiate with us in a good faith position, and yet they've decided that is not a prudent business choice. it's put hundreds of thousands of below the line people like me in the place of "is living in LA worth it?" because so many of us need to scrape together the barest amount of money to sustain ourselves here. i'm lucky, i have an SO who loves me enough to let me stay here even though i haven't had rent money in four months, but not every one of us is as lucky. the entertainment industry is hemorrhaging, and i doubt all of us will survive this. but never forget, our real enemies are the over payed CEOs on the top of our corporate ladders. they refuse to give us a fair share, they refuse to even negotiate what looks like a fair share. these people are not your friends. when they die, we will all be better off. none of the guilds wanted this. it is entirely on the laps of the greedy mother fucking pieces of shit who cornered us into this. and I hope they die soon.

For those of you not in America, I believe the situation here can be best summed up as “People have suddenly remembered how effective strikes can be when the bosses can’t have them all killed.”

waking up to this? can it be?
i don’t want to celebrate yet. it’s tentative and we still have SAG-AFTRA left, not to mention IATSE in 2024. i think even the animation teams in Disney trying to unionize if that hasn’t been resolved yet? it’s not over yet but it’s a step forward.
sure enough, studios will find more ways to screw over their people but hopefully these deals will put more protections and guarantees in place for those who need it the most (read: NOT the goddamn CEOs)

Fun Fact:
My professor actually created a game kinda sorta like this. Our class was separated into groups of 5 or so, and assigned a backstory and some money. One person being immensely rich, a couple of people being born middle class, and the rest being born in debt. The richest person could make up the rules as they went. The board in front of us was basically a Knock off monopoly.
It started off quietly enough— I was born the richest but since irl I was lower middle class I had no idea what to do with it. So I payed off other people’s debts. And bought someone’s child bc they were unable to take care of them. Then married someone else to get out of jail? But the entire quickly devolved into a revolt as people realized that the rules don’t really apply if no one listens to them. The player I was married too divorced me and took most of my money saying that I “should have written a prenup” and even took my cat :(
After a messy fight we ended up taking everyone’s money and splitting it evenly amongst ourselves and rebuilding the system based on trade. (We were one of the first tables to get gone so people were exchanging doodles for whatever snacks the other people had) and we were happy.
At the end, we reviewed the other tables’ results.
- one group solved the problem by going into a poly relationship and sharing the bank account
- one group turned into a weird cult where people were constantly being killed, revived, murdering for revenge, and repeating the same process. I don’t think it was even about money at that point
- two groups did something similar to our table, as in splitting the amount of money among the players
- I think the last group ended up giving all of their money to another group bc they didn’t want to deal with it?

IATSE President Matthew Loeb did not mince words today when asked if his local unions were willing to strike if this spring’s contract negotiations with the AMPTP did not go well. “Nothing’s off the table, and we’re not going to give up our strength and our ability because they sapped us,” said Loeb to cheers at a CES panel of Hollywood labor leaders. “Everybody’s bank account got sapped because they were unreasonable for months and months. My folks aren’t going to just settle.” Despite the fact that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes dominated much of last year, Loeb said his membership is not strike-weary, but weary of the AMPTP’s tactics.
