The WIP Questionaire
Thanks so so much from @verba-writing for the tag! I had such a fun time reading your answers too and I'm very excited for paranormal romance 😍
I feel like I wanna flag that a lot of my answers are very anime/gaming-sphere oriented and I hope I'm not totally alienating my mutuals by revealing just HOW MUCH I'm not a book person lololol But this is with what we're working:
Tumblr media
The Questions are:
1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?
The very first thing I made was the high premise: It was synthesized from the Overly Sarcastic Productions question "What if all the Kings Under the Mountain came back...?" and then I added the context "...in a Nuclear Crisis to discuss piece?" And in my head, it was this HBO-style modern fantasy Game of Thrones meets West Wing type deal. But then... I didn't want to write the modern piece. (The modern piece should be written by people in countries from all over Europe about what it means to be a hero in various cultures.)
So I set it in 1800s fantasy world instead!
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
The first arc would be Dance in the Game by Zaq
The second arc would be Lacrimosa by Kalafina
The Gods' Arc would be Paper Boquet by Mili
3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?
Is it to cliché to be like "my current self-insert protagonist is my favorite character I've ever made"? Her and my antagonist are just THE BEST and I love them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?
Mmm, I think Untitled Yssaia Game's story would appeal to queer Game of Thrones fans who could FEEL the straightness in GoT, especially if they also like anime. I would hope I could get general anime fans as well as Arcane and Genshin Impact fans, but I feel like those are too mainstream and Yssaia is not. Realistically, I think I'm gonna get the Wadanohara people and the Ib people and, if I get really lucky, the To the Moon people.
5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?
Marketing lol -- explaining what it is to people in a way that they realize they want it.
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
Fuafua 🥺🥺🥺
Look at her! She is a six-legged, six-eyed slug cat called a Maret. Marets fill the same role as ocelots in Yssaia, except they're more semi-aquatic like otters and their skin has a stressball-like texture.
Tumblr media
7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
They walk or ride Rumateurs (which are alpaca-like beings with ossicones) or take ships or airships or trains. I don't like writing about travel that much though so it is a background element.
8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?
I am pre-editing the first arc for my alpha readers and the third arc has another 50k to 100k words to draft. We're at like 250k words total right now and it is so unwieldy 😭😭😭
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
Oh, I have a convenient graphic for this. Hang on...
Tumblr media
10. What are your hopes for your wip?
I was just diatribing about this earlier but the DREAM is to turn it into an RPGmaker adventure game and have it go viral and make a million bucks off it. I'd love to be the next Undertale but it'll never happen because I am not positioned to be the next Undertale, you know?
So yeah, that's what's what! Thanks again for the ask! This was so fun! I'm gonna pass this to @maiemorrae, @moonfeatherblue, @zebee-nyx, @winterandwords, @modernwritercraft, @words-after-midnight, @spideronthesun, @theprissythumbelina, @thepanplate, @thetruearchmagos, @maskedemerald, @moondust-bard, @pluttskutt and @emelkae 😍😍😍 I actually internalized Verba's WIP so well from this tag and I wanna make sure I'm updated on what all you cool people are working on! Open tag to any of my other moots too! 🥳
IMPORTANTTTTT⚠️
I will edit this to have a blank easily copy-and-pasteable question section when I get back to my computer. If I forget, @ me!

one day late but i’m back again with B week for the alphabet superset!
once again if you want more alphabet superset goodies please check out @gothmothart @mrdoctorb @wanna-alphabet-on-it @clockquark (not all are posting but they’re all still cool people to follow!)
this week’s oc: bacia
more info on the oc (and the painting references) under the cut!
year created: 2015
what they were used for: she was originally used for an Ib/Undertale/Death Note (though that last part never ended up being relevant) crossover fic. a few years ago i revamped her to be a general Deltarune oc.
description: Bacia was a painting done by the son of Guertena and acted as the gallery’s judge and protector. She had a rose that could kill people and a lighter that could burn paintings. (I was 13 when I made her… she was a lot.) In the plotline of the crossover fic, Flowey and Frisk are sent to the gallery due to a reset gone wrong and through some shenanigans and major character death for all the important Ib characters, Bacia makes her way over to the Undertale world during a genocide run.
present day notes: Despite the cringe and mary sue-ness of Bacia, I love her very dearly! Writing her story got me through a lot at a time when I really needed a story to throw myself into. Back when Deltarune chapter 2 came out I ended up revamping her to look like how she does in the actual drawing and not just in the paintings. I also took away all of her overpowered-ness and made her just a normal monster. I wanted this piece to show the current day Bacia looking back at the original Bacia in the gallery and had so much fun drawing that Sans.
art references: i won’t normally be doing this, but since all the paintings had real life painting references, i thought it’d be neat to share.

Gassy character concept:
CW: fart kink/eproctophilia
A gassy super heroin.
Her super power is toxic gas.
She can control very well how to expel air, including farts and burps.
Her sweat is the most important.
She has a special suit that helps her gather all that and convert it into toxic fumes.
Her farts, pee and poop are literally a toxic waste and she has a special toilet/bathroom to treat those wastes.
She has IBS so she had a lot of troubles controlling her powers during childhood and she was bullied for being stinky.
She loves to fart directly into enemies she hates or make fun of her for being stinky.
Even tho she's quite an expert into hand to hand combat.
She makes them faint.
She only killed one enemy and it was kinda accidental (and traumatic for her).
She's very well tempered and she needs to have a deep control of her strong feelings because the amounts of toxicity depends on this.
She has a fart fetish/body odors fetish, her sense of smell is really desensitized because of her powers, so she likes smelly girls.
Her super hero name is Haydee, or H²S, for Hydrogen Sulfide, that's the chemical compound of every human farts (the rotten eggs smells comes from here) and it's the compound she makes in high levels. 🤭
That's it for now, with the moving my pen display is packed so I haven't had time to sit and draw iterations of her, so I'll just write things of her here. 🥰

Did it again, folks. Got emotionally invested in a game with no fandom. Feels bad, man.
Played Yuppie Psycho, got one of the endings, working on the rest.
Absolutely one of my favorite games ever. Didn’t know what to expect going in, especially as there’s no fandom hype. Can’t even remember how i heard about it tbh. I had finished Ib for the first time a few months ago, and was expecting a similar experience- very short pixel rpg that was light on story and left much up to the viewer’s imagination.
Surprised to find myself totally engrossed the entire way through, and actually intrigued by the story and nuggets of world building. The game is much longer than Ib and I was impressed at the length for an indie. Shorter than Omori, though, but multiple endings.
I did especially enjoy the ease of play. It is slightly challenging, but not difficult. I have a disability and can’t play games that require quick reflexes, and thankfully this was never a problem. I’d say that the speed needed to avoid enemies was on par with Ib. very fun to play. Some games i only play for the story, but the gameplay is actually fun! My favorite gameplay system is usually turned-based rpg, so enjoying this so thoroughly was really different for me.
One thing to note is the save system. A single-use limited item is needed to save. Just by luck i happened to buy the switch version, and I leave my Switch Lite in perpetual sleep mode, so I don’t have to worry to about turning it off for the day, so I can just pause when I’m done. I do see why the creator did this, it does add to the sense of dread and urgency, but it can’t be a pain for people who need to turn off their system.
For a survival horror pixel indie game, I’d say the scare factor is quite a bit more grotesque than Ib or the spooky parts of Omori. I don’t recall any jumpscares. the creepiest bit is probably viewing the video tapes you can collect along the way, as they’re filmed in live action, like 20 second horror movies. They’re skippable though.
If you’re tired of playing games about teens, the main characters are all working adults.
I do wish the characters and more distinct designs, just for the cosplay factor (i wanna represent and I can’t draw lol), but I realise that Brian and Kate are meant to be ‘every people’. You could probably pull it off if you had a group, though.
Incredibly frustrated that there’s next to no fandom, as I think YP is absolutely on par with Omori, DDLC, and Ib. I still have no idea why this happens to good games. The right let’splayer didn’t push it or something? I’m old, idk how things get popular. tbh I’ve been avoiding my media hobbies (anime, manga, gaming) for years now because of how frustrating is when I find something that blew me away, only to discover that no one else has heard of it.
Bonus, vital information:  You can feed the cats! The 30-something lesbian cat lady is best girl.

I finished watching the Angels of Death / Satsuriku no Tenshi anime y’all… AND IT WAS SO DAMN GOOD OMG??????????? I also gotta finish reading the manga and finish watching a game playthrough still! I kept behind the episodes I was watching as the anime is how I wanted to experience the story! And ah I’m so happy I finally got into this series! Truth be told, when the game came out I didn’t think much of it. I thought it was cringy and like Creepypasta, that was my impression of Zack especially (thought he was like a rip off Jeff the Killer and I’ve always thought Jeff wasn’t a compelling character and had a weak story). Buuuuut of course my mind is changed! I still don’t think much of the game as some of the dialogue is just meh (maybe an English translation issue), but I can see aspects of it that are enjoyable. And of course I think the anime and manga are both great adaptations! I prefer them over the original game. The manga gives a lot more depth to each character that even the anime didn’t do, so I do recommend reading and watching both! To get the full story and content! And the art and animation in both is beautiful! Zack is especially cool in the manga!!! Ahhhh. So much pretty Zack art!
Oh and I watched the English anime dub! As I heard it was good AND IT IS.
Another fun fact: when the anime came out, I saw a compilation of Zack’s Japanese laugh which made me think the anime was bad??? Again I WAS WRONG. About the anime being bad! Uh but *whispers* I still think his Japanese laugh is…silly. His English laugh though! I liked that! The English cast did such a good job with EVERY character! I usually prefer watching in Japanese but I think the English cast was stronger (again ZACK). That’s my personal opinion! The English crazy Zack laugh was cool!
Anyway, I bet y’all can guess that Zack ended up being my fav. Astounding considering all my first impressions of him was so negative! Isn’t that fascinating?! He’s so cool! His design is top tier! DUDE USES A SCYTHE HELLO?! He made me feel bad for him! Uhh whenever he openly calls himself ‘dumb’ I was mentally like ‘NO ZACK DONT SAY THAT HUN’. :( dude never went to school, it isn’t his fault.
Rachel was a very compelling protagonist! Though I guess she and Zack were duo protagonists! Anyway, I loved how much mystery there was to her. I couldn’t figure her out fully until it was all revealed. There’s still some things about her that are unclear buuuut I think the manga will patch all the holes!
The best aspect of this series is the dynamic between Rachel and Zack. Brains and brawn. They depend on each other for selfish reasons, at first. Which was interesting to watch! It gave me heavy found family/sibling vibes. Uh I definitely avoid the fans that ship them…because gross. Rachel is 13 and Zack is in his 20s… so can people just not??? It’s like Ib and Garry all over again I swear. So yeah stay away from me if you’re into gross stuff like that.
ANYWAY I’m excited to finish the other Angels of Death media soon too! And am already drawing some art (and purchasing merch)!

Introductory Post! (My God I can't believe I'm doing this)
-ˋˏ ༻❁༺ ˎˊ-
Hi! I'm Clarissa! Briar is fine too. I go by She/They. When I was young I used to scavange through ask blogs and other things on this website, and today's the day I finally made an account.
Interaction Rules!
My Interaction Rules can mostly be found in my carrd but the gist is that I am really shy and introverted, so please be patient with me. Tone tags are appreciated! But please use tone tags when joke flirting with me (I can get confusing signals lmao)
DNI!
Obivously, don't interact if you go against any minority, don't interact if you support problematic people, don't interact if you sexualize any minors/alternative fashions, and don't interact if you are a proshipper. (Again, check carrd for more details)
Interests!
Touhou: Imperishable Night is my favorite game, while my most favorite character is a tie between Marisa Kirisame, Reimu Hakurei and Alice Margatroid. Fun Fact that famous Bad Apple video is what got me into Touhou in the first place.
Pretty Cure: I got into the entire franchise just last year and I'm currently watching the entire seasons from start to finish (By the time I'm typing this I'm in DokiDoki Precure). The OG and Max Heart have my heart while Cure Black and Cure Blossom are my favorites. I also love the All Star movies cause I'm a big sucker for crossovers.
Sailor Moon: I watched Crystal and the Eternal Movie on Netflix, and I'm currently reading the Manga! I would get into the 90s anime since I seen so many clips on Youtube (its so funny) but considering how many Precure episodes I have to watch, I can't. (Maybe someday!) I love Hotaru Tomoe. Can't say the same thing for Mamoru Chiba (especially during the first arc of the manga/crystal UGH-)
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The intro slaps and I'm also currently in the middle of watching the series. I know all about the dark themes and enjoy the symbolism even if I dont get it at first. (I could ramble about how the show is amazing tbh)
Ib: One of my favorite games of all time, please tell me people remember this game.
Mad Father: Same vein as Ib, again please tell me people remember this game.
Lolita Fashion: I have a few skirts and blouses (still need to get a petticoat lmao). I particularly like Gothic and Classic Lolita Fashion.
The Garden (OC World): My Toyhou.se is pretty bare bones about the world, and partially making this Tumblr is to talk about more about my OCs (in general). Either expect very long blocks of text or half-lazy art (thats what I see my art atleast).
Editing: Besides drawing, I also make video edits! Check out my Instagram to check them out (My instagram page also links to my tiktok page so check that out if you want).
Honorable Mentions! (/other interests that do kinda count but they aren't really that big)
Doki Doki Literature Club!: Monika is Best Girl
Undertale/Deltarune: Yes, I was an Undertale person during that big boom. I also used to hate Chara, but now I love them and believe that Chara and Asriel deserve the world.
Monster High/Ever After High: They were my childhood. I really don't mind GEN 3, and I actually find it fascinating (we don't talk about GEN 2).
Portal: The first game I bought on steam, and played both of them. We need more content (not a 3rd game, just new content).
BFDI: Also a childhood show I grew up. Something about objects competing for an Island really stuck with me.
Alright, that's enough typing. I'm not even sure if this is too long but it feels like it. If this didn't repel you from me, feel free to stick around!

michael is trying to determine what a 'clavicle' is
"does that mean the star trek kind, or the bdsm kind?"
charlie wants to cast magic missile.
charlie has vanished back into the ethereal plane mid-taunt
silje has decided to not get bitten today
silje may or may not have stats.
oh, right, trolls are weak to fire! and also we forgot to upgrade sieron's firebolt. so it actually hurts now!
silje is full of knives and blades and does 31 damage in one turn!
charlie shouts words of encouragement from the ethereal plane. a nearby ghost vibes with this.
🎉 eldritch blast 🎉
kali remembered she hates the sun
silje is enthuasiatic about charlie saying "get him cat boy!"
charlie contemplating using fireball to nuke the troll and also the entire stonehenge
charlie has decided to use magic missile instead, probably for the best
the troll bit at charlie SO POORLY it broke some of its teeth on the ground
charlie is too small to hit
accidentally rolled advantage on a firebolt, so got to learn it WOULD have done 29 damage with a crit but instead it missed because it was not actually with advantage
silje has just sliced open its entire back and made a spray of frozen blood! radical. big boy is down!
we have burned the body because we are not stupid. well, we ARE stupid, but not stupid in the way of leaving a body full of necrotic magic around
[dr coomer voice] i think it's good that he died!
we're also doing a funeral pyre for the other corpses that were around. just to be sure.
our loot is: the satisfaction of a job well done
thorne is cosplaying as charlie
charlie has located the direction troll came from! she found the 'the way to sweet loot' sign
thorne is apparently better at survival checks than our hired guide? wack
we found a viking house! it has: mead, a shield, gravestones,
found a gold coin in the mead! maybe it was thirsty
oh theres a LOT Of coins in there actually. 60 gold and 120 silver!
have successfully pointed out a hole in the DM's logic :)
there was a raven! it cawed and left. ok bye buddy
and that's where we leave it! heading back to camp vengeance next time.
someone rated this session a 7.2 out of 10, which is very specific
good night mr coconut

LET’S TALK PACING
Let's talk pacing, because it's a nebulous thing that I think deserves to be talked about more. BUT in order to talk about pacing, we need to talk about structure.
Writing a book is a thing. Most people who start out writing one, never finishes. They get stuck halfway, or they get a better idea, or they run out of steam, and even if they do finish it, they take one look at it and realizes it is not what they wanted and despair.
I get that. I really do. Most of the things that people write are short stories. Why? Because they are short, fast, fun little snippets. They might be a fanfiction filling out an established story, or just a scene that got stuck in your head, or even a carefully structured piece meant for publishing. It's still short. It's in the name. So you write it, check the grammar, maybe send it off to a beta, make sure that the language is good, and that you get across what you want to. Then you're done, publish and move on. The majority of time is spent actually writing, and most of the editing is done on the fly.
Why? Because it is short enough that you can keep everything in mind. It's a song, not an album.
This is what many people try to do with books, treating each chapter as a short story. Write, fix, edit, next chapter. Books... doesn't work that way.
One of my favorite illustrations of this is an author I am following on twitter (V.E Schwab, the structure of Vicious is -chef's kiss-) posting a picture of her and her editor trying to fix her latest (at the time) book before the deadline. The picture was of the floor filled with yellow papers detailing what happened in the scenes, and they kept moving around scenes to find the flow of the book. Because with a book, writing 'the end' is not the end, that is just the beginning. Because only when you've got the text down can you start making sense of the flow. Do you need to add scenes? Remove them? Move them around? These are the parts that are impossible to fix on the fly, because you don't know until you've got the end. It's too big. Too complex. It changes too much from what you've originally planned.
This is why I am so adamant about not fixing grammar or bothering having nice writing until the alpha is done. I don't know if the scenes will stay. I don't know if they need to be rewritten. I can't know.
In Rebirth, the scene where you steal the Rat-King was in a different place, and a lot more simple and dry. It was the part playtesters skipped through to get to the good stuff. I had to move it, rewrite it, add a lot of scenes to it just to make it fit better into the narrative and be fun. I have already done one round of changes to Retribution because I knew they were needed (moving chapters around, adjusting the timeline) but I can't look at it until I'm at the end,
If there is ONE advice I have to ANYBODY out there writing a book is to FINISH it before you start to edit it. Don't go back. Don't fix things. DON'T REWRITE THE START. JUST DON'T. Not until it's done. Otherwise it's wasted work. Take notes, but don't write it.
Just finish the damn book first.
It's taken me a lot of courage letting other people see my unfinished work. It's harder than I pretend, because I'm a perfectionist, but I also know that the end result will be the better for it. So I will suck it up. The biggest issue is that I can fix coding errors, but I CANNOT go and fix the pacing. Not yet. It will just sit there and annoy me, and I have to try to ignore it. It's not easy.
And here we come to the BIG problem with pacing.
PACING IN A BLOODY CHOICESCRIPT GAME.
It is a nightmare. In a book you have control. Here, the more choices you give people, the less control you have over the pacing.
Let's take a simple book. A is for Action, I is for Interaction, and R is for Romance.
A - I - A - I - A - R - A is a common pacing. A mix of action/plot and character interaction ending in a romance and a climax. No, not that kind of climax, get your mind out of the gutter.
In Rebirth I had a pacing like this, because the Interactions were separate, Ortega for the hero side and the past, Mortum for the villain side and the future. No complications. Simple. Easy to pace. And then we started to add love interests.
A - I - A - Ia/Ib/Ic/Id - A - Ra/Rb/Rc/Rd - A
Not that much more complicated. More alternative scenes, sure, but still straightforward as games go. Talk to person A or B. A lot of games that locks in your romance does this, choose the same interaction to build romance points, enough and you'll get the payoff at the end.
But some of those scenes were so nice, and would also work if you are friends. And I wanted a platonic playtrough as well. It's just that well, the friendship scenes are already there, and you can care about more than one person so why not be able to romance one and be friends with the other?
A - Ia -Ic - A - Ia - Ic - A - Ra - A
And all of a sudden those action/plot scenes are a lot further apart.
But some of those interaction scenes were cool, and kind of plot related things were revealed so maybe everyone should have those not to miss out on content, right? And that also helps with not having to choose one out of five options and feel shut out from the cool things in there for no good reason. In real life, people have time to do more things, right? Not to mention that you need more interactions to do more groundwork for the romance, which some people want to happen right now, and other people draw it out.
A - I - Ib - Ia - A - Ia - I - Ib - A - Ra - A
By now our plot/action A scenes are getting further and further apart... and all of a sudden someone says, well, there's a lot of talking and not much action in this game? Because we can have one playthrough that is:
A - I - Ib - Ia - Ic - A - Ia - I - Ib - A - Ia - Ra - A
because they talk to/wants to romance everyone, while another playthrough is:
A - I - A - I - A - R - A
because they are playing a depressed loner who would rather skip at least two of those I scenes because that would be in character.
And these are the things I'll have to sit and balance. Because there is no canon playtrough. Because some people will want to talk to everyone, and I have to make the decision if I should let them, and risk them complaining that the game is slow and too talky, but if I don't, they might complain that they get cut off from content for no good reason because realistically in the game they would have time.
And on the other hand I have to decide if I should allow people to skip content because it would be in character, and risk players missing out on content, information and maybe even think it was a short and boring game if they only played it once. I made the Lady Argent mind dive optional in Rebirth, and I think it was the right call. I did not make the Ortega argument in the park optional because I wanted that interaction there, though it was against character for some mc's to meet up.
These are the things I have to juggle, in addition to the pacing.
I am taking a big risk with Retribution, but I've allowed myself the possibility of failure, rather than taking control. I am giving the players/readers more variation/control and choices than I had planned. It's going to be very hard getting a decent pacing at the end, for all the varying playthroughs. But I'm gonna try.
We'll see if I'll manage to pull it off.

Omg... 😳
So I am not the only who thinks about an Au with Outlast or even Ju-on: the grudge, Dreadout or Ib, it would be amazing in your style and for sure nothing boring! :D
Anyway, what type of videogames do you like and what things do you first notice in it (like graphic style, gameplay mechanics, the plot, characters and something like that).
Crossover AUs with horror videogames are the best thing!! I love it when Katsu gives me ideas for them… Thank you for enjoying this type of content!
Since Katsu is the one who plays the games and knows this stuff, I’ll pass the mic over...
I’m sorry, you’ll have to bear with me with this reply since it’s usually me who plays/watches let’s plays and then brings them to Ryu if I plan to use them in an AU or a crossover. Outlast is one of the games I actually played (including dlc and the second one), so we both remember it quite well, and Ryu drew the outlast prompt without me, which is cool.
Ju-on (not really the games though, but the Japanese franchise) is gorgeous and very fun, and we might draw a crossover/au with it, but the possibility is very low – unfortunately, it doesn’t really have much visuals to make it truly stand out in terms of a couple of drawings, as much as I love it. Tbh, I don’t even remember if Ryu watched the movies, but we definitely saw the game... 7 years ago or so :“D
Dreadout, on the other hand, is a really wonderful game to go with au/crossover stuff!! I don’t remember the game very well, but we both saw it, and it has cool ghosts, monsters, and overall Indonesian folklore there is such a joy... they have a giant pig in the game, ffs. I’ll think about it in the future, but you probably noticed that our promises rarely come to life because we don’t have much time for everything we want to do with snk lol This game has a lot of character, so it would make a crossover a relatively easy thing to pull off, so who knows!
Ib is the saddest case with us, because we both know about its existence, but never actually played/watched it. I have it downloaded, but I don’t like going blind in horror games, and all the letsplayers I watch played this game so many years ago that their videos are somewhat unwatchable. We will fix this in the future, but I’m not sure we’ll still be in the SNK... You never know with us, though.
Sorry, I felt the need to comment all the games because we really like it when someone knows what we refer to... horror is so much less popular than we anticipated, it feels weird to us.
Now to the actual question lol I rarely play games because I’m bad at them and I don’t trust myself, esp when it’s horror games, but I throw videos at Ryu if I like something and I feel the need that Ryu needs to see it too. Right now I’m really into PS-styled indie horror games, we both feel nostalgia from them, even though I’ve never had a PS prior to 2017, and Ryu doesn’t even play games. Indie genre is the only place to get horror games because AAA horror games rarely come out, plus they’re usually extremely creative and can create an atmosphere which is the most important thing for me (don’t know about Ryu). When something has ~an atmosphere~, it’s easy to get inspired and make up something of your own. A fuckton of my AUs are just a bunch of indie horror games mashed together.
I think any graphic works with a horror game, be it realistic or extremely stylized, or mimicking an old game with a pixilated filter over it... It all depends on what the author wants, and I’ve never felt dissonance between graphic style and the game itself (from ones that I’ve seen), but a certain style can definitely highlight the game. I can recommend games to Ryu just because of a certain visual in a game, or just give a time stamp to the thing that I like most if the game doesn’t deserve more attention, in my opinion.
The plot comes second important after the atmosphere, the ideas with horrors can be either creative on their own, or some simple ideas can be delivered in such a way that they’re more enjoyable. It’s more ideas to get inspired by lol
Gameplay mechanics is a thing that’s difficult to judge because it’s a different experience when you watch the game or play it by yourself, but if the game looks complicated, I probably won’t buy it or will be too scared to play it lol (it happened with White Day with us). Playing games leaves much more impact on both of us, though, but the fear of getting frustrated by the game is stronger. I still find gameplay mechanics important, because I understand all the boredom of walking around collecting notes and getting jumpscared from time to time, but it all depends on a game. I do appreciate cool features though!
Characters are usually the weakest point in horror games because very few of them actually have characters... Unless it’s a visual novel or something. So I guess we don’t really pay attention to them if there’s nothing special about characters or they’re not even there. This is why I usually shove my faves into the game world and see how it works lmao This is why poor Levi is always terrorized by some fucked up version of Eren. It’s so much fun.
Thank you for your question!

August’s Featured Game: Marinette
DEVELOPER(S): Teal Crown ENGINE: RPG Maker MV GENRE: Horror, Puzzle, Adventure WARNINGS: Sensitive Themes, Blood/Light Gore SUMMARY: A little girl named Marinette, in the wake of a splitting family and a change of homes, is having a birthday. But this, her eleventh birthday, will present a deadly opportunity to fulfill a special promise. On the night before her birthday, she is drawn into a strange realm; an unnatural dollhouse, populated with dolls who are not quite what they seem. A web of strings lying in wait, and threatening to ensnare the poor marionette; warping her perception, and twisting her every move. Will the strings attach, and force her to become an unwilling puppet, or will she escape this surreal web of strings? What will she have to do to avoid the dangers of the dollhouse, and set herself free?
Our Interview With The Dev Team Below The Cut!
Introduce yourself! *Mitty: "Hello, I'm Mitty! Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in this interview. I'm the main developer of the game and I'm working with a team of friends to make this game a reality. I work mainly on the visuals and programming, and I'll be representing the team, alongside Third! I've been on the community for around two years, even though I tend to not be active very often." *Third: "Hoi, I’m Third! I appreciate you reaching out to interview us. I’m the main composer and writer of Marinette, and I work under Mitty to make the story and soundtrack what we want it to be. I’ve been in the community for little less than Mitt but am even less active in most of my developer discords."
Tumblr media
What is your project about? What inspired you to create this game initially? *Mitty: "The game is essentially about a girl that gets trapped inside a dollhouse. A simple concept really can go far ahaha I've always loved themes related to creepy dolls so I wanted to create something related to that. What pushed me initially to start were obviously the inspiration of seeing other devs creating, seeing how far you could go with these engines and create amazing interactive stories, however the huge support from a friend was what made me actually start past the planning and dreaming!" *Third: "Marinette is a story about a little girl becoming entangled in the complicated family and supernatural landscape she finds herself in on her birthday. I enjoy writing short stories about this kind of thing so it’s fantastic to work on a larger project about one of my favorite subjects. My primary inspiration and introduction to this kind of game in general was Pocket Mirror, and I use it the most as a model for how to do certain things. However, I also draw a lot of inspiration from masterpieces like Aria’s Story, Ib, Witch’s House, and Alice Mare."
How long have you been working on your project? *Mitty: "The project has been in the works for around two years now! The first year was mostly planning and right now we are on the right track with the programming and asset creation for the demo, as well as music and sound design for later development. Planning isn't over yet though, especially for the final game." *Third: "I’ve been working on this for almost two years. The soundtrack possessed most of my earlier attention, but now it’s taken a backseat to writing, now that I’m actively writing the scripts for the game now. "
Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Mitty: "Yes! The game has inspirations from plenty of sources, not only strictly RPG Maker Horror games, or games in general for that matter. If I were to mention those, of course games like Ib, The witch's house, Alice Mare, Pocket Mirror, Yume Nikki & .flow, Stray Cat Crossing, Mogeko's games...etc quickly come to mind. When it comes to the aesthetics and visuals, the inspirations come from several different places, including games like Alice Madness Returns, Dofus, Yomawari, The Legend of Mana, Little Nightmares...the list goes on; or other media, like Inu Curry's animation style or video creator nana825763, as well as some anime and music videos. Silent hill is also a huge inspiration for the atmosphere, and hopefully we can pull it off well!" *Third: "My primary inspiration, as I’ve said earlier, is Pocket Mirror, both for its masterful writing and soundtrack. The game’s soundtrack is the main reason I still play piano. Whenever I’m feeling musical, my fingers always hunt out the same kind of haunting, mysterious, and sometimes peaceful and playful melodies that Pocket Mirror is rife with. In the end, our soundtrack is probably going to sound like Pocket Mirror and Aria’s Story’s soundtracks were meshed together. Story wise, commonplace elements in this genre like demons, monsters, mean parents and puzzles that tell the story are commonplace for a reason, and certainly find their way into this one, in their own special way. Every other game I’ve mentioned involves them in some form or another. And young, curious protagonists are also a blast to write and do evil things to and put in difficult, dangerous situations. "
Tumblr media
Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them? *Mitty: "We surely have! Many of them in different areas ahaha Taking away bug hunting, I am primarily an artist, so programming for me is a secondary thing. Because of this it's easy to get carried away and hard to realise what can and can't be done. I don't want the game to be visually boring if I can make things move and seem alive! The way I'm handling it is programming like an artist: I think in my head what cool things I can do with my art by not having it completely still, and then it's a matter of executing it on the engine. However this comes with a downside. I tend to tweak things a lot, and that takes quite some time, but I honestly think it's worth it ahaha Also I find it hard to start writing, but when I do, I can't stop orz. Other challenges are also finding plot holes. This is fixed with a lot of studying the story, gathering inspiration and talking with the team. I also struggle a bit with communicating with the team, but thankfully they are all very nice and understanding." *Third: "Main challenge is overcoming the sheer weight of how much I have to learn about music and writing in order for this game to be what I want it to be. I’m a perfectionist, and when I care about something, I can’t tolerate it being worse than it could’ve been. Also, writing is getting more and more complicated and there’s more things and details to keep track of so as not to create inconsistencies or plot holes, especially as we try to revise it and make major changes to the story (Mitt will know what I’m talking about). "
Have any aspects of your project changed over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? *Mitty: "It changed a lot, not only in terms of the story and writing, but visually too. The basic concept is close to being the same, though. You can check out old posts in the blog where I consider different styles of mapping and such. Actually, don't, please. It's too old...and my writing...oh god." *Third: "The writing has come a long way, but now that we’ve fleshed out and written down much of the backstory, it’s a much more complicated story than what Mitt first showed me when I joined."
Tumblr media
What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? If you don’t have a team, do you wish you had one or do you prefer working alone? *Mitty: "Initially it was just me, occasionally having Mia to talk about the story and help develop it. Rindre joined as a voice actress very early on and also helped in other aspects of the game. Then I also talked about it with two friends I know in real life, one helped with organization and the other with some concept art, but they aren't that active anymore, even though I still count them as part of the team (Thank you guys btw if you're reading this). Eventually I met Third, an amazing composer and writer, and I asked him to join in! He brought along a friend who is also an amazing composer and writer, Code, and these two are complete madmen of music and writing and I'm super glad to be working with them, as they are super passionate and it makes me really happy ahaha. Bruno is also a really dedicated composer that is helping with a few tracks as well! Miku and Luccinia are two super talented and kind artists that have also been helping a ton with concept art, and their ideas have certainly improved the game as well. We are welcome to more concept artists, though! More heads, more ideas ahaha Recently we got the voice actresses for a few characters in the game, when we did the auditions, and hopefully soon another friend will jump aboard and help with organization and writing! We are a relatively small team, and sometimes progress goes a bit slowly since we can get busy, but we are all doing our best! I’m glad that I’m not alone. Links for their pages and such can be found on the team section on the blog, go support them if you can!"
What is the best part of developing a game? *Mitty: "For me, personally, I love seeing what my team mates come up with, whether it is music or concept art. I also enjoy the love and support we get, and it makes me excited in the development. As for the creation part, I like programming challenging cutscenes and doing cool things with the assets. Progress updates can also be fun to make when I have the time." *Third: "My favorite part is showing Mitt what I’ve written and composed. Making her happy and excited with my work is extremely fulfilling. "
Do you find yourself playing other RPG Maker games to see what you can do with the engine, or do you prefer to do your own thing? *Mitty: "Oh, yes! Besides being a cool break from programming hell, it helps me make it less of a hell ahaha I like improvising, though, so I think I play RPG Maker games because I enjoy them for the most part." *Third: "Occasionally, not really. I don’t play many games and I’ve played the heck out of the ones I have."
Tumblr media
Which character in your game do you relate to the most and why? (Alternatively: Who is your favorite character and why?) *Mitty: "Ah I don't know, honestly. I think I can relate to every character in one way or another, and it's hard picking one, especially since the game isn't out yet and I'd like to keep most characters hidden until the demo. Marinette is definitely one of my favourites, though, I just love how innocent and cute she is. Her cheekiness can be made super interesting ahaha" *Third: "My favorite character is definitely Pierre. He’s a complete blast to write, and gives me lots of cool things to describe and say through him, from his magic tricks to his killer lines and quotes."
Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Mitty: "Hm...Having organized things better in the beginning would have saved a lot of time now, but I don't think it's been that big of a deal anymore. I don't have any regrets that I'm aware of at the moment since everything until this point was necessary to learn and get to where we are now."
Do you plan to explore the game’s universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Mitty: "I'm not sure yet, it depends on the reception and how willing I'll be to continue the story. Even though I would find it fun to make comics, another game or a different midia, realistically I can't tell how willing I'll be to continue developing content about it after the game is finished. Honestly, I hope I can develop more projects on Marinette, we do have content for that, and I absolutely love it with my heart! But it's also equally important to move on to another story. Only time will tell!" Third: "I hope to, but that day is very far away for me. I’ll be gone for quite some time after Marinette is finished, and I hope I’m not forgotten by the time I return. Perhaps I’ll entertain myself with additional short stories exploring the various aftermaths of the game."
Tumblr media
What do you most look forward to upon/after the release of a project? *Mitty: "I honestly just want to get the story out there. I'm hoping people will enjoy it if they play the game, and will have a special place in their hearts to keep it on. This project means a lot to me, and having it making people feel things is what I'm looking forward to. I'd love to see other people playing it, definitely. I imagine I'll eventually be relieved to have finally completed it, it'll be a big moment for me to sigh be proud of creating. I'll be able to move on to work on other fun things while I see how this little child of a game is going to do out there in the wild, and that's always nice!" *Third: "Fan reaction, 100%. Having people ask me questions about my work and telling me how much they enjoyed it is my favorite part of writing."
Is there something you’re afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game? *Mitty: "Yes, I don't want to feel empty with nothing to do when I finish the game. I know it will be great and all, but I've been working on it for so long that it's hard to imagine not working on it ahaha! It's a really fun hobby, but it's also engraved in my heart. I want it to be the best it can be, of course, so I'm scared of bugs, inconsistencies and overall it being clearly a bad game. I'm hoping that people will help with critiques on the demo, so I have a better outside perspective of where we are going. I don't want to drop the game, so I'm scared of having to take a long break from it during the development. I'm worried of being a terrible team leader as well." *Third: "I dread plot holes more than anything, and I dread a dull and overall unimpactful story. I want a tale that will punch the viewer in the gut, hard. I want to make them cry. I want to make them laugh. I want them to draw what I wrote, and explore it further in hopefully-not-too-sexual fanfiction."
Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Mitty: "Don't be scared to start. You're going to suffer mid-way if it's a long term project, but keep pushing through, you'll learn a lot and it becomes easier with time. Take breaks and take it easy, step by step. LIST STUFF AND MAKE BACKUPS. Learn with short projects first. Ask for advice from people you admire, but never hold them on a pedestal. It’s always helpful to be a jack of all trades! Try to think from an outsider perspective if you're not sure of how it's going, and if you can, tell people you trust about the game and ask for opinions. Always take criticism well, but don't stress too much over harsher or even meaner comments. Have fun and never forget your starts, the people you meet and the reason you're doing the project for. If you're also an artist, writer, musician, remember this is a great opportunity to add something interesting to your portfolio. Cool visuals attract people, but they are not everything that will keep them hooked." *Third: "The best part of making a game is the people you make it with. The story is the most important ingredient of your game. Prioritize it first, and everything else will fall into place around it. Otherwise, everything will serve some other aspect of your game, and that’s rarely a good thing. Always speak your mind; do not every not say something just because it’ll hurt someone’s feelings. Obviously don’t be a tool, but if you ever have to choose between hurting the game and someone’s pride, pick someone’s pride. It’s much kinder in the long run."
Tumblr media
Question from last month's featured dev Froach Club: Have you ever had a moment where you got completely stuck or became intensely frustrated while using RPG Maker? *Mitty: "Yes I have, I think everyone has QwQ Despite silly mistakes, I've gotten stuck several times, but honestly it's usually either us doing something stupidly hard that can be done another way, or we are just not skilled enough yet, and it's better to come back later. You can usually do most things you wanna do if you have the advantage of knowing the programming language your RPG Maker Engine uses I think. Google is your friend always, and sleeping about it also helps. I once dreamt of a whole sequence to fix a problem, and it worked! ahaha Always take it easy and don't give up, but know your limits and the limits of the engine!"
We mods would like to thank Teal Crown for agreeing to our interview! We believe that featuring the developer and their creative process is just as important as featuring the final product. Hopefully this Q&A segment has been an entertaining and insightful experience for everyone involved!
Remember to check out Marinette if you haven’t already! See you next month!

During my 1 to 1 feedback talk, my lecturer suggested to expand on some more ways of designing the same character from the same mood board but also drawing the characters as different variations and even styles. One example he used was Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse as a example, how all these Spiderman and women and pigs where different variations of the same thing or mood board with similar suits but different styles, such as the black and white SpiderNoir, and even to Spider Pig with a more 2D Cartoon stylisation.
Tumblr media
For the boy, I used a more Animal crossing kind of style, very simple and more reliant on shapes and even mixed in with some PUCCA style , very short and stubby look but is also fitting because PUCCA runs a Chinese style restaurant and the show is produced in South Korea so it has many a lot of Asian Culture
Tumblr media
I also used a more manga look on the other boy drawing making it black and white like if it was in a manga. As for the pigs, the first one, I just thought it would be fun to make it look like an actual acid trip, just a cluster of colours and long thin wobbly legs with bursts of bright colours like if you where on shrooms. Of course not the boy but if the story was different with an older person taking Shrooms, this would be fitting. For my second was actually supposed to be something more cartoony with the pig standing up and with a more human body structure like Looney Tunes, but i completely changed that and went with a more creepy approach inspired mostly by indie horror games, like IB , don't starve or shows like salad fingers

📌✨🏳️‍🌈☘️💢💎 for ib?
📌 how did you find your hyperfixation?
oh i wish i remembered for sure, but most likely a playthrough! as with most stuff back then
✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?
SOO MUCH... obv a lot is nostalgia now, but also the art is unlike anything else i know, and i really love the concept!! alternate reality painting... rose representing your life... puzzles... it’s all there. plus multiple endings!! and it’s not hard, or terribly long! anyone can play it and enjoy it :] oh and also garry is there
🏳‍🌈 do you have any headcanons (lgbt, race, neuro, etc) that are important to you?
other than trans (or just nb) & mlm garry not really! but also i think ib being autistic could be a cool lil hc
🍀 do you have any kins or comfort characters from your hyperfixation?
garry is literally one of my top 4 ccs of all time this man lives in my head rent free and i am very happy about it. except for when there’s a lack of content. then it’s a struggle. but i dearly love him and he means a lot to me!! ib and mary also mean a lot to me though!! they’re all so important
💢 what do you NOT like about your hyperfixation? is there something you would want to change about it?
i wish garry lived / was remembered in more endings /hj
ok but really, i do kinda wish there was a happy ending for them all... it’s unrealistic, but it would be nice.... otherwise i kinda don’t have any complaints
💎 are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share?
garry is nb, doll room used to not be randomized, and umm. this hoodie is very old but it definitely does exist and i want it very badly. thank you
