“What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost…”
Fact 24: Second Officer Lightoller tried refusing a 13 year old boy onto a lifeboat until his father argued that he was a child. John Jacob Astor was also refused although he was the richest man in the world. He had wanted to go with his pregnant wife Madeline. The lifeboat was launched half empty.
Fact 23: the Titanic lifeboats rowed for about an hour towards the light of the Californian on the northern horizon to avoid suction. By the time the ship sank, it would have taken another hour to return for survivors, hence why so many died.
Fact 22: Robert Ballard found the Titanic in 1985 when it was confirmed the ship was split in two.
Fact 21: the titanic may have witnessed an optical illusion of light refraction or a black berg, making the ice impossible to see until it was too late.
Fact 20: in 1898 a novella was written by Robertson titled Futility or the Wreak of the Titan. It addressed the sinking of a superliner called the Titanic after a collision with an iceberg on a calm April night causing a huge loss of life. It was named the greatest man made moving object and had water tight compartments so was “practically unsinkable”. The ship did not have enough lifeboats. Not only does it mirror the Titanic but the novella also mirrors an accident involving the Olympic where it collided with a smaller ship and sank it.
Fact 18: Captain E J Smith was accident prone in the new class of Olympic liners.
Fact 17: the Mauritania (which is mentioned in the 1997 film) and the Lusitania were both faster than the Titanic. However, these two Cunard ships were not built for speed like the Olympic and Titanic.
