「 @universestreasures | Aichi Sendou」 issued a challenge:
“Toshiki?” The teen vampire prince speaks to break the silence, his gaze focused on the full moon that just so happened to shine in the shot tonight from his position on his personal balcony. It was clear from his tone of voice he was not feeling well, but that’s to be expected after having been yelled at by the elders and almost everyone else for treating his human companion well … like a person and not a pet.
“Do you think … I’m a monster?”
(Ahmes Aichi For Club to build up the past lore)
Tumblr media
At the question he couldn't help but graze the barren part of his throat where the vampires' infernal device usually was; a decoration meant to display to all who laid eyes upon it that he was merely a pet who’s only purpose was to obey and bleed. But to Toshiki it was a tortuous collar of sorts that would punish and keep humans such as himself in line, to keep them still whenever their owners grew hungry... Toshiki had experienced such a thing numerous times by now, but never by Ahmes himself. Instead Ahmes would remove it the moment they were alone, the risk of punishment was never a fear for Toshiki once behind the doors to the prince's chambers.
Here... he was safe. Here Ahmes was as well. But this question... it tugged at his heart. The prince had been gone a rather long time meeting the elders today-- Did something happen then to make him question such a thing? Was it something they said... or was it something Toshiki himself did to make Ahmes think he had thought of the prince in such a way?
❝ You? No... I don’t think that. Where is this coming from all the sudden? ❞
Somehow, Toshiki could see now this was a long time coming. The prince was often ridiculed for not acting as a vampire of noble standing should, especially when it came to their relationship. He watches Ahmes, trying to get a better read from his body language in this pale moonlight. It was no secret that humans often regarded vampires as monsters... Did Ahmes think he was one as well by association? Toshiki surely would disagree, no matter who asked him nor how many times. He’d disagree every time. Every other vampire he’s met here though? That was a different opinion Toshiki would rather keep to himself. If only for a lack of a good way to put his thoughts to words. He didn't have much practice considering humans weren't normally allowed much freedom of speech, especially around the top brass of the current vampire reign.
Toshiki was born human in a world ruled by vampires who considered themselves the superior beings. As such humans like Toshiki were considered lesser; no different than livestock, really. Casting one’s true feelings wasn’t a privilege he or his own kind have often known. Truthfully, Ahmes was the first person since his own parents who had allowed him such a thing. Perhaps it was thanks to them that he hadn’t grown as jaded as most humans would in his situation.
He had lost a lot to the vampires. His parents, his home, his dignity. He'd even have lost his life if it weren't for the prince who stood before him. He now lived as a servant of sorts, a warm source of a continuous flow of blood. But to Ahmes he was never any that. To Ahmes... What was he? A friend? An obligation? He never asked. So he didn't know. But he didn't have to. The unspoken words between them... the ones they never got to share due to the walls constantly listening. But for some reason Toshiki wasn’t afraid to speak now, something about the way Ahmes’ gaze was set somewhere far from here... it made him feel as though they were up there, out of reach from the influence of this place. Even if only for this moment.
Tumblr media
❝ ...You’re different, Ahmes. I’ve seen actual, true to life monsters-- and you’re nothing like them. ❞ Toshiki stifles back a wince as he then places a hand on Ahme's shoulder. The burns that Percival had inflicted on his palms still sensitive despite having healed over by now. That man found any reason to punish or reprimand him, it was people like him that Toshiki considered monsters. But to him: blood didn't make the monster.
Humans and vampires alike... He had met plenty of horrible people of his own kind as well. Those who would sacrifice friends and family to save themselves, parents who would promise off their own children to keep themselves from the life they had damned their kin into. Even today Toshiki is still unsure if that had been his fate as well. Had his life been decided for him before he had ever been given the chance or choice? He'd never know. If his parents had made a deal with the devil then the devil had already dragged them down to hell to pay the cost. There wasn’t much point dwelling on the past, blaming his misfortune on his parents wouldn’t change a thing for him now.
That left Toshiki where he was today. A walking means of feeding the next generation of vampire rule. But Toshiki had found himself unable to resent his own life. And that was entirely due to his keeper; the prince of vampires, Ahmes. Toshiki followed Ahmes' lucent ruby gaze up towards the moon, sharing in it’s light with him. It seemed the both of them had had it rough these days, but part of him had felt guilty... Ahmes had been getting himself in trouble with the higher ranks, and it had been all because of him. Percival was sure to brand that fact into the back of his mind the moment the prince had been summoned away from him earlier that day.
❝ Being what you are doesn’t make you a monster, and... I’m sorry if it was I who made you feel that way. ❞ Toshiki then moves to lay his head against Ahmes' shoulder, resting his cheek atop his bandaged hand that still sat there. The pressure against his healing scars tingled his damaged nerves, but it didn't hurt so bad now. Ahmes' presence always seemed to put him at ease, as if he alone could take the pain away. It was that or he had been so distracted that his pain itself went on to be ignored. At the moment it didn't matter, his own hurt was the last thing on his mind. ❝ Monsters are created. Not born. That's what I think, at least... And you haven’t become one. And to be completely honest with you-- I’d say you’re quite incapable of it. ❞
Such a bold remark would insult most other vampires who would thrive on being called a monster by a human, terrified of such beings. But Ahmes, again, was different. Toshiki had known him long enough by now to know. Ahmes didn’t overpower him with fear; didn’t drink up the human’s tears as much as any other vampire would on their blood. Ahmes was different-- he wasn’t a monster. He couldn’t be. He’d never be. Toshiki was sure of it.
Perhaps it was wishful thinking at best, false hope at worst. It wouldn’t be the first time he had lived a lie. But that’s truly how he felt on the matter, with his entire heart. He believed in Ahmes, as more than just his keeper. Within Ahmes he felt a shift in the balance, a chance for change. The chance he had never been given since his unfortunate birth as a human. -

How did you study about military gear? I'm currently trying & searching sources and looking for some tips.
I really like your work btw. Keep going✨️
Hi! Thank you so much, I'm excited to share some knowledge with someone. <3 I tried summing up methods that have helped me the most: 1. lots of research (vids, blogs, magazines, loadout lists,...) 2. store/product photos 3. military photos (not airsoft!) 4. damtoy loadout showcase vids I first started off with doing extensive research on cod operators. Cosplay guides by shadeops21 (DeviantArt) are a huge help with the most accurate loadout lists.
Next step was looking up product photos & studying the functions, shapes, different angles. Store/product photos are my most used refs, they're in high resolution & you'll see every detail thanks to a well lit environment. I also collect military pics in one huge folder, not only for pose refs & inspo, but also as refs on how the gear is used. Product photos will lay flat, worn gear will always look different!
Make sure to learn how to differentiate airsoft from real military pics, airsofters (except for dedicated reenactors/milsimers) tend to have wacky tastes (ugly, black amazon gear and fake, glowing NVGs,...).
The gear of Damtoys is incredibly accurate & precise, watching videos of the dolls being dressed will also give you an idea on how accs (pouches, glow sticks, radio systems, ...) are attached to the equipment.
My strongest interests lay in SOF, so I'll also collect magazines with expert info, insights & loadout descriptions (K-ISOM (German) SPECIAL OPS (Polish)). To my advantage, I do have friends who are either huge military nerds or in active duty, I'll sometimes ask them questions and learn about the features and (dis)advantages of various pieces of gear. It's a life hack, but you'll achieve your goal either way if you're determined!
After you got a feel for the basics, you can start accommodating knowledge. Study drawing/recognizing the most used equipment first, western modern kits are very repetitive (as the products are so good, they don't need to be replaced). Headsets: 3M Peltor ComTac, Sordin, Ops-Core AMP Helmets: Ops-Core, Crye AirFrame, Team Wendy, MICH 2000 Plate carriers: Crye JPC, Crye AVS, First Spear, Lindnerhof, AGILITE, LBT Slick & 6094 Gloves: Oakleys, PIG FDT Alpha, Mechanix, Petzl, Nomex flight gloves, Outdoor Research Ironsight After that you can start looking up more niche or less iconic brands and gear, you'll be a nerd in no time. I hope this is helpful and I'm sorry for the late reply. If you ever need help or info on something, feel free to dm me on Twitter or Tumblr!

so we're at the final double-episode of the rtd run *wipes brow*
look I'm biased. I'm sure we're all biased in terms of which era we started in, whether it was nu!who or classic!who pre-post rtd... but it's just such a good run. it just is:
obviously brought doctor who successfully back to life and returned it to its status of one of the most iconic pieces of television of all time
updated it to a 21st century storytelling format and audience, with a focus on the companion as the lens through which the show was introduced and the fact that the doctor needs them on a deep, fundamental level that echoes back and gives depth to some classic companions that maybe never got their proper dues within the show, and ripples forwards right into 13's run with bringing classic companions back!
emotional follow-through, with one long arc spanning from season 1 until the next regeneration. I've heard/seen some people think that ten near the end, and especially in the last episode, is self-indulgent and whiny, but I just... idk that is incorrect imo. this iteration of the doctor is a survivor of war and genocide, and clings desperately to people who eventually leave, and they tend to react very strongly to the continued death around them until they decide to literally test time to see if they can beat it and save someone who Shouldn't Be Saved, and then, just when they maybe have found a measure of peace with it all, they have to knowingly go and die. it's a lot for the character to emotionally compute, I think ten is allowed a little tantrum before going through with it, because so much of that regeneration is the universe using ten as a punching bag (after nine was so excited to see what came next too...)
like yeah, it's angsty writing, but that's kind of the point. emotional follow-through on concepts (immortality, transience, alienness, etc) that previously were a tad brushed over, with an added specific survivor's guilt + PTSD thrown in for good measure
speaking of all the people who leave for whatever reason -- companions with families and high stakes at home and individual personal reasons for travelling with the doctor, and for having to move on from that travelling. no longer mostly stumbling into the tardis and then sticking around until suddenly back home (or um... a couple of times dying), and reeeelatively comparably easy goodbyes (for the most part) -- being left over and over, or making the decision to go on alone, or seeing people die, hurts. and on the flipside of that, seeing all that splendor and then having to go on with life... what does that do to a person?
although chris eccleston unfortunately didn't have a great time and deserved better, the atmosphere once behind-the-scenes found its footing was clearly so supportive and friendly. people were coming back year after year (and so many of them have come back for rtd's new run, which I think says a lot too)
I know the music isn't technically underrated, but I think the music is kind of underrated actually, especially individual episode scores. the companion scores, the gallifrey score, the ood choir, the action score that was introduced in s3, and so many more, all perfection and show up wonderfully as various motifs in different places, but individual episodes had perfectly tailor-made scores (some personal favourites are dalek, father's day, impossible planet/the satan pit, gridlock, human nature/family of blood, midnight, and waters of mars)
similarly to the doctor being self-indulgent, I've also heard that dtennant is overrated, which, again, I get it. I don't agree, but I do think that some people don't engage enough with other iterations of the doctor, and so aren't really giving "the doctor as a whole character" their due shake, but sticking only with ten's narrative. that being said there's nothing about dtennant's performance that I think is anything less than amazing. and there's a reason that ten is so beloved, and it's that the main themes of the nu!who soft reboot rtd era stories that people weren't sure would last beyond a season or two, are carried on ten's slender slender shoulders and dtennant does it perfectly (see, I do think there could be less romance in ten's run, because it never works for me, and that's partly that the writers themselves seem to be shy about it/not quite sure what to do with it (because it shouldn't be there in the first place) but that's not the performance, that's unfortunately dtennant's jessica rabbit-ness). the point being, this was for a new generation that was coming from a different television background, and it was done pretty perfectly. and also dtennant loves doctor who, absolutely loves it to bits, and that shines through... the fucking nerd
rtd's main flaws (there are none I'm kidding!!) are that things can get unwieldy once they get too big, and there are times where one can see the cracks badly covered by duct tape in the format and pacing of some of the bigger adventures. that being said, every single rtd finale (from the flawless bad wolf/parting of the ways to the messy bitch that is the end of time pt1+2) is always at the end about something incredibly (for lack of better word) human. it's always about the relationships between the companions and the doctor (and also the doctor and the master, but that makes sense). the doctor and rose, the doctor and martha, the doctor and donna, the doctor and wilf (honorary companion). and the pretty big cast of characters that make them feel real -- rtd may at times be messy but he is hardly ever boring or emotionally vacant. the story itself might become untethered, but the emotions are firmly understandable
(that being said, fingers crossed that 13 years of post-doctor who have given him more sense of what to keep and what to scrap, so that the specials can be both silly and serious, without the seesaw completely ripping out of the ground -- I mean, mainly I hope it won't be wanky and self-congratulatory, but I have faith on that front! we'll see in one month)
this era of television did something that has barely ever (has it ever?) been done before. brought a story back and made it not only work, but near-perfectly balance respect for the classic, with leaps and bounds into the new. it created a brand new generation of fans, and brought along the older ones too
as a kid I didn't think any of these things, because I was just watching doctor who through the gaps of my fingers (I was a very frightened child overall). and like I said, bias ahoy, because nostalgia will do that to you, but you know what? it's still good. it's really really good. I'm so glad that it's part of my DNA

Concepts + Relationships in Goncharov (1973)
I finally watched Goncharov and wanted to post my own analysis because it destroyed me emotionally ;-; This will be focused on certain scenes / concepts that stand out to me, and scenes related to Goncharov or Katya. It also gets more unprofessional and rambly the further it gets as I lose my sanity. Enjoy!
It's incredibly significant to me that a movie portraying positive gay relationships was filmed during a time when the Hays Code was active. It really shows the resilience and continual survival/presence of the LGBT+ community, even when faced with hostility from the outside world. Of course the gay relationships aren't the focus of Goncharov but like, the fact that gay relationships never needed to be in this movie at all?? They weren't essential to the plot. The movie wasn't about or centered around queer relationships. Those queer relationships just... existed. Director Martin Scorsese just... chose queer representation. It's super unfortunate that queer representation did end up leading to Goncharov's heavy censorship when it was released but I think being able to rediscover it in 2022 has given a lot of us in the queer community hope and has turned Goncharov into sort of a 'queer icon' type movie? And might be what has led to Tumblr's huge obsession over it. (Because as you know, the presence of gays on Tumblr is huge).
Goncharov (1973) is also culturally significant. The anchovies scene. THE ANCHOVIES SCENE. They really single-take improv'ed a scene discussing fUCKING PIZZA and USED IT AS AN ALLEGORY for old, traditional values vs. new progressive values. THE ACTORS ARE FUCKING BRILLIANT??? Not only this but the anchovies scene as the setup to homoerotic Andrey x Goncharov implications ?! smortass gae men plsss. What's so important about this scene to me is that it reflects how many of my friends and I might have a conversation. They're just cooking and they start talking about food. then that leads to an INTELLECTUAL discussion about values, using what they're doing (cooking) as a metaphorical comparison point. AndTHEY DID IT SO WELL???? FIND ME ONE PERSON IRL WHO CAN USE ANCHOVIES ON PIZZA TO MAKE A POINT ABT PROGRESSIVE / NEW IDEAS BEING SCARY BUT ALSO POSSIBLY BEING GOOD BUT YOU WOULDN'T KNOW UNTIL YOU TRIED IT???? i am iN LOVE
OK LET ME AT SOFIA FOR A MOMENT GRRRRGRGRGRRR BARK BARK BARK GRRRRRRRRR. Sofia is insane. When we're first introduced to this character she fucking bITES SOMEONE'S EAR OFF in the background of a shot?? SHE IS A BITER she is crazy I LOVE HER. Biter representation fr. Then while Katya and Sofia are having their wlw sequence, and they fight, Sofia ruthlessly starts fucking drowning her ??? Against Katya's reasonability, her love, her "this isn't how we end sof" they're fighting, Katya's dying, the slowing thudding heartbeat with the ticking watch, it's all so.. visceral. Tangible. It's a scene you FEEL deep in your bones. You recognize in that moment that Sofia just... is a wild card. No apologies, no purpose, no meaning. She's not a manic pixie dream girl, no Harley Quinn, she's not written up for some redemption arc or to be "misunderstood" just for later trauma reveal and healing sequences. She just... is. She's insane and awful and tragic and amazing and beautiful too. She's a force of nature. She truly makes you feel entropy incarnate.
Next up the apple scene. CAN WE TALK ABT THE REPEATED FOOD SYMBOLISM IN THIS MOVIE??? Goncharov offering Andrey the apple ??? Adam and Eve allegory ???? The entire scene basically screams "hey im gay (corruption) come be gay (corrupted) with me" and I LOVE IT. but the fact that ANDREY FUCKING REFUSES TO EAT IT??? Like. im SOBBING this is such an emotional and symbolic scene and we can see Andrey struggling with himself here. He doesn't know what he wants yet. He doesn't want to make hasty decisions. Yes, he takes the apple, but he also doesn't eat it- he's tempted but he doesn't commit. He knows better than to follow his basic impulses. He decides to spend time getting to know Goncharov better instead. This scene really offers a lens into Andrey's character and gives him dimension rather than making this a Gay Romance ™️
NEXT UP: clock tower scene !!!!! wow. wowowowowoowowow. ok. wow i can't breathe. this scene is STUNNING. 1) the clock symbolism, relating back to Katya's watch. 2) the actual aesthetic, gorgeous spinning brass and silver accents with the sunlight and everything. 3) the STANDOFF between Goncharov and Andrey. Goncharov is so scared and paranoid. He has that gun pulled and pointed at Andrey, he's shaking, he's visibly upset and unwell. Andrey is an absolute statue, the fucking image of calm over here smoking a cigarette not even worried. Such gorgeous juxtaposition man I wanna cry. 4) the gunshot. when Goncharov pulled the trigger I jumped so hard, hell I expect anyone who watched this movie jumped and yet the focus on Andrey and he's still standing just as still, not a twitch not a jump. He was looking away from Goncharov and yet he didn't fear for his life for a SECOND. He knew he wasn't going to get shot. I can't believe this sexy ass man's nerve but it makes him so beautiful and contrasts so well with Goncharov's paranoia. And then the "Time is something you can’t stop, Goncharov" line after Goncharov has blown out the clock in the tower with his gunshot like COME ON who even thinks of something that iconic to say except sexy ass Andrey / sexy ass director Martin Scorsese ughhhh
and finally we reach the death of Goncharov, and the primary theory of all Goncharov enthusiasts: gay sex would've fixed everything. Would it have though... would it really have? Because now we know of Andrey's betrayal. The way he kills Goncharov... and shouldn't we have known it all along when he refused to eat the apple Goncharov offered? And Andrey shoots Goncharov in the back. It's like how in the clock tower, he had his back turned to Goncharov when Goncharov could've shot him... now there is a role reversal, but Andrey does shoot. And he has the chance to shoot Katya too but Katya kills him first. We don't see much one-on-one interaction between Katya and Andrey in this movie but the standoff between Goncharov's love interest and his Literal Wife is so powerful and you can really tell that even though Katya and Goncharov as a couple are over (or were over for a while) she still cares about him strongly. She still loves him. She avenges him swiftly and with no hesitation, not just to save her own life. She is cradling Goncharov's body as she sees Andrey and sheds that last single tear, and she has sympathy for him and his lost love. Katya is so strong. So brave. So beautiful. She is the ultimate strong ass woman and she does right by her dead husband and she kills for love. She is an amazing character and she absolutely is the only one to deserve to live.
------
p.s. this was created with the help of a mass document on Goncharov (1973) developed by various Tumblr users. thank you all for your labor of love in creating this doc !!
