Mo Ran is so gay it isn't even funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, this is just my opinion and I realise other people have their own interpretations, but this whole episode is super telling to me of just how unreliable his narration is about having tons and tons of sex with people of both genders in his previous lifetime. He's just so... oblivious. None of this reads as a man with a lot of previous experience with many different people. He did not pick up on her flirting with him at all. Sure, he did have a lot of insane sex in his past life, but as the book unfolds, it becomes very clear that most of that sex was with Chu Wanning. At best, there were only a handful of other people he was involved with, and one was a prostitute he was paying, while the other was his wife whose relationship with him was also transactional.
I know people argue that he is bisexual because he married Song Qiutong, but when we actually get her POV on their marriage, it turns out that they had unenjoyable sex only a handful of times, at least one of which was him taking her from behind and very much imagining that it was Chu Wanning in her place. There are plenty of gay men who end up married to straight women (and vice versa) for whatever reasons and none of this makes them any less gay. He also identifies as a 'cut-sleeve' himself at one point, so he doesn't seem at all confused about his sexual attraction to men. Later on, when we finally get his unaltered POV on his life in the brothel, it comes out that he considered the girls there as sisters at best, never as sexual partners. The only other named sexual partner is Rong Jiu, who is male, and I can buy that there were possibly other people who looked like Shi Mei that he was with under the influence of the cursed love spell, but there was never any real attraction there, which is why some argue that he is attracted only to Chu Wanning and would still be attracted to him regardless of gender.
But I think that this is also not true. He definitely was obsessed with Chu Wanning from an early age, which makes it hard to see what his preferences would have been if Chu Wanning wasn't in the picture, but that chapter when he finally realises his feelings also reveals that he does have a type, which he never dared to think about before because he thought he was unworthy of having a choice. However, Chu Wanning fits this type to a tee, so it's easy to run away with the idea that he is shizunsexual and that Mo Ran's attraction begins and ends with him.
With that said, we do get confirmation later on that he does find other men attractive, in particular, Jiang Xi. It's just that he never has the space or the inclination to do anything about it because of his preoccupation with Chu Wanning. In the extras, when Mo Ran misunderstands Xue Men's relationship with Jiang Xi and thinks they are having a love affair, in his unfiltered Taxian-jun state, he is full of approval because he personally finds these powerful, beautiful, prickly, emotionally unavailable older men to be the height of attractiveness. If Chu Wanning hadn't been in the picture, Mo Ran would have definitely been attracted to Jiang Xi or someone similar. Even Ye Wangxi, whom he also fixates on, fits this type (except for the older man bit because I understood her to be only a few years older than Mo Ran). The fact that she turns out to be a woman also cannot be used as an argument for Mo Ran's bisexuality because she very much presents as a man throughout the book (but whether or not she actually identifies as one is debatable).
In short, Mo Ran does have a type of man he is attracted to and it is definitely men that he likes, regardless of his few dubious and very unsatisfying dalliances with women. While Chu Wanning definitely fits this type of ideal man, there are other men out there whom Mo Ran finds attractive too, it's just that he is too unhinged about Chu Wanning to actually do anything about it. Also, I very much doubt that Mo Ran was nearly as promiscuous as he makes himself out to be because he reads as very oblivious when it comes to sexual relationships in general. Even with Chu Wanning, who was right there and about to pass away from sheer horniness that he couldn't even begin to disguise, Mo Ran was still going, "Shizun is so pure and virtuous!" 🙄
(I'm not going to get into the whole Shi Mei situation and how badly he misread him every step of the way too, but that is because his brain was so badly mangled by him that he really stood no chance on that front until it was entirely too late.)

CDrama Year in Review 2023
I'm still very much a CDrama beginner--I just started watching them in the summer of 2022--but since this is the first year I got into them in earnest, I figured I might as well do a year in review a la @dangermousie (whose lists I have found incredibly helpful in deciding which CDramas I really, really need to go back and watch as part of my CDrama education--so thank you!). So, without further adieu, here is my ranking of 2023 CDramas, in order of least enjoyed to most enjoyed*.
(See also: KDrama Year in Review 2023)
*Disclaimer: *not* a measure of objective quality
10. Royal Rumours: This drama was not great? Meng Zi Yi and Jeremy Tsui were fun, but the story started out messy and got messier. For some reason I still finished it, I think because I had a lingering cold and it was all my brain could handle at the time *shrug*
9. Gone with the Rain: I actually really enjoyed this one! The pacing was inconsistent, but Zhang Nan was fun as the irreverent Mo Xi, and we love a grizzled general. Special shout to the teacher who was not actually evil, just a sad lesbian whose gf disappeared on her
8. Love You Seven Times: Intriguing concept, not a strong enough FL to carry it through. The reincarnation stuff really worked for me at first, especially in their first mortal tribulation (as people, not CGI animals), but I got tired of it pretty quickly. I admit, the gifs of Ding Yu Xi as a sexy cat demon *did* pull me back in, but not enough for me to actually finish the thing, alas
7. Destined/Chang Feng Du: Started out really strong, and then stalled out on me. I think I only got up to about episode 22 or so, after their epic desert crossing and new start in a new state--they lost all narrative momentum for me there. I stopped watching and then just...didn't start again. I do, however, remain a big Bai Jing Ting fan, and will be keeping on eye out for whatever he does next
6. Hidden Love: (Contemporary) Age gap romances are hit or miss for me, but Zhao Lu Si absolutely stole/carried the show for me in this one. Although more fun imo when the main couple are in the the will-they-won't-they phase than in the family melodrama after they get together, still the only contemporary CDrama to get me to give it a go this year--and I'm glad I did
5. My Journey to You: Featuring my favorite murder girlies Esther Yu as Yun Wei Shan and Lu Yu Xiao as Shanguan Qian! Gorgeous costumes and sets, sweeping cinematography, and plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. Full disclosure, I have not actually watched the last two episodes because I got busy and then saw weird chatter about them, so I have no comment on the allegedly weird ending
4. Till the End of the Moon: Look, I know the ending wasn't ideal, but for the majority of its run, this drama owned my entire soul. It also introduced me to Bai Lu as Li Su Su, who inspired my first actual tumblr post (that wasn't a reblog) because I was so obsessed with her. And everyone knows that Tantai Jin is the CDrama ML of the year. 10/10, no regrets at letting it take over my life (and the OST my Spotify) from April to May of this year
3. The Story of Kunning Palace: More Bai Lu is always a good thing, and she's extra fun here as the transmigrated former evil empress and totally-over-your-nonsense Xiang Xue Ning here. The reverse haremness of it all totally shows why Bai Lu is the chemistry queen, especially with the princess (Liu Xie Ning) and cranky, morally grey, would-fail-gym-class strategist Xie Wie (Zhang Ling He). So glad this drama made it out of the CDrama vault and didn't languish indefinitely in censorship hell
2. A Journey to Love: Finished this one two days ago as of this writing and am still not normal about it. Ren Ruyi (Liu Shi Shi) and Ning Yuan Zhou (Liu Yu Ning) lead an exceptionally strong ensemble cast in this wuxia that explores the complicated relationships between love, duty, loyalty, loneliness, and companionship. Ruyi and Yuan Zhou are far and away one of my fave OTPs of the year, but just as compelling are the relationships between friends/brothers/fellow assassins Yu Shisan, Yuan Lu (ugh my heart), Qian Zhou, and Sun Lang. This drama definitely has one of the strongest ensemble casts of the year. And the character growth of Yang Ying from little princess abandoned in the cold palace to who she becomes by the end will stick with me for a long time. Plus another 10/10 OST!
1. Lost You Forever S1: I'm not normally a reverse harem girl, but the longing, loss, and hard resolve portrayed to perfection by Yang Zi as Xiao Yao really did it for me here. This whole drama struck an emotional chord for me, and where TTEOTM consumed my soul, LYF took over my heart. Xiao Yao's relationships with her power hungry, overprotective cousin Cang Xuan; hot snake demon Xiang Liu/playboy archery shufu Feng Feng Bei; and perfectly devoted Tushan Jing are all equally compelling to me, and while I may know who she ends up with in the end, who I *think* she should be with changes based on who's on screen at any given time. And A'Nian, my favorite bratty princess who really just needs some strong parenting, holds a special place in my heart. I know we may never get S2, and even if we do, censorship means it probably won't be what the drama makers are capable of, but I'm so glad for this little piece of absolute perfection. And, again, a top notch OST!
Fave Drama: Lost You Forever, by just a hair over A Journey to Love. See above.
Least Fave Drama: Royal Rumours--truly why did I finish this, what was past me thinking
Biggest Disappointment: 2023 is also the year I read Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, my very first CNovel! But then I didn't even bother checking out its adaptation, Romance of a Twin Flower, because it got rid of everything that made the novel such an addicting read, including a brilliant, strategic, ice cold FL and an ML who actually kind of sucked at the beginning, only to grow on you very, very slowly over time. I'm grateful that the chatter around the drama is what brought the novel to my attention, but other than that, hard pass.
Favorite Male Character: Lots of good ones this year, but I'm gonna go with Cang Xuan (Zhang Wan Yi) from Lost You Forever. The conflict he faces between getting enough power to protect the people he loves the most and that power making him incompatible with those loved ones is so compelling, and his yearning for Xiao Yao even when she's right in front of him is wrenching. Full disclosure, I also just really love the sound of his voice
Tumblr media
Favorite Female Character: This could easily have gone to Li Susu (TTEOTM), Xiao Yao (LYF), or Ren Ruyi (AJTL), but I'm gonna go with Bai Lu's Xiang Xue Ning in The Story of Kunning Palace. Something I really loved about this character was just how jaded Xue Ning really was, even in her second go round at life. Yeah, she wants to make amends for the harm done in her previous rise to power, but that has hardly turned her into a good--or even pleasant--person. Instead, she's incredibly skeptical and still plays most things ice cold, especially with her family. As a bonus, we got plenty of Bai Lu's fantastic side eye as she basically had to do high school all over again when she gets called into the palace despite her very best efforts not to be.
Tumblr media
Favorite Ship: Ren Ruyi and Yuan Zhao from A Journey to Love have got to be it. They balance each other out so well, and over the course of the drama, learn to communicate effectively with each other whenever they have a problem. They also recognize that not all problems can be solved by ~love~, which makes their relationship even more compelling when they decide to prioritize each other in a way that respects what the other wants from life.
Tumblr media
Favorite Secondary Ship: Little princess Yang Ying and Yuan Lu absolutely broke stole my heart in A Journey to Love. Doomed love even more than the main OTP, these two's youthful romance was such much fun to watch, especially as they egged their respective mentors on in their own romance. Yang Ying's recognition that her first love did not have to be her only love is also something I always love to see, even as it broke my heart that (spoiler) she and Yuan Lu never really had a chance at an HEA. Their relationship really exemplified a key theme of this drama: that you should love the people you love while they're still with you because tomorrow is never promised.
Tumblr media
Non-2023 Dramas that I Watched: Two non-2023 dramas I watched that deserve a special shout out are Love and Redemption and The Sword and the Brocade. Love and Redemption prepared me to really appreciate the big swings that Till the End of the Moon took, and The Sword and the Brocade went a little way to filling the Story of Ming Lan shaped hole in my heart. The Sword and the Brocade also had absolutely searing critique of the concubine system, even as it featured one of the most genuinely good-hearted FLs I've seen. Would recommend both!
Most Looking Forward To: Yes, I'm a sucker and the censors (not to mention the characters) will probably break my heart, but I'm still crossing my fingers that Lost You Forever S2 will live up to the promise of part one. See above: still a CDrama beginner, have not yet had all the optimism knocked out of me. Sue me.

Still nowhere near finishing Yuwu but just some random thoughts - I said in a post a while ago that I find the dynamic between Yuwu's main couple (Mo Xi & Gu Mang) similar to Wangxian's, but more and more I'm thinking about them in relation to Hua Cheng & Xie Lian, and how their relationship appears flawed and marred compared to Hualian's highly idealized one.
Hua Cheng was there for Xie Lian every step of the way as far as he's able and was right beside Xie Lian during all his most harrowing moments; Mo Xi couldn't be there for Gu Mang at his lowest, didn't fully comprehend Gu Mang's suffering, and hoped Gu Mang would pull through on his own. Hua Cheng is completely non-judgemental towards Xie Lian's actions and their moral implications and accept whatever choices Xie Lian makes; Mo Xi judged Gu Mang bitterly for his supposed treason and saw it not only as a betrayal of their country, but as Gu Mang's self-betrayal. Hua Cheng's commitment to Xie Lian is unwavering since day one regardless of the outcome of such commitment or any personal price he has to pay; Gu Mang is afraid to commit and keeps pushing Mo Xi away because he sees no future in his relationship with Mo Xi due to the disparity in their social status, and is also afraid of the emotional devestation and loss he'd have to suffer should Mo Xi decide to move on from him and their romance come to nothing.
The list could probably go on and it sounds like I'm trying to put Mo Xi and Gu Mang in a negative light - but the point is, their love for each other isn't rendered lesser or shallower than Hualian's due to their failings, and their deep empathy and care for each other is just as poignantly moving despite their negligence and misgivings towards each other. Love could be profound and undying though the actions aren't perfect and the results wretched - Mo Xi and Gu Mang's relationship feels tragically realistic in this sense. Although I'm only half way through the novel, I find Yuwu's view on romance grimmer, more sober and more realistic even compared to Meatbun's previous novel 2ha.

Xavi talking about Pedri in today's press conference:
"He's doing well, he's happy because he has good feelings. He's doing everything to get back as soon as possible and I hope he can return in the next few weeks." "Who did Pedri put in the midfield of his ideal XI? Iniesta? Oh, he put me too? Good. (laughs)"

Deathworlders
It has become a major topic of late that humans could be perceived as an absolutely insane race to the galactic community, assuming that most sapient species evolved on more ‘Paradise Planets’. For instance, humans are insanely good at adapting to different environments and can consume a huge number of things that are poisonous to other species. One of my favorite ideas that I came across recently is that perhaps humans make the ideal search and rescue species due to our ability to track, even untrained humans can often come up with the right ideas when tracking even if we don’t fully understand why.
_________________________________________________
Xelaqua was completely and totally lost, had been for three local days. Xe’d been playing with the other Klitori children around the edge of the forest here on M’Jang, a relatively new colony of the Klitori Union on D’Nik. The moon was a beautiful world, but a dangerous one. Klitori scales could keep most of the radiation from the gas giant they orbit at bay, but they still were advised not to go out after planetrise.
Xelaqua had been chasing a Zo, a small, brightly colored, winged insectoid being. Being an adolecent, xe could move fairly quickly, but his arms were still short and pudgy, meaning catching the little zo had taken some time and the climbing of a very old tree of some kind. That was when xe’d realized xe was in fact very lost. Xelaqua had roamed for three days now, hiding in the roots of old trees by the river bank or in small caves during the planet day, and trying to find the colony elsewhen. The problem came when a magora, a large predator, had attacked xim. The six eyes and sharp fangs had been all Xelaqua had really seen, as it bit his tail and thrashed him into a tree.
Xelaqua woke up some hours later, confused and frightend as the planet was overhead. The pain took a moment to set in, but come it did. A broken arm was painful but not too bad, xe had three others after all, but the missing tail was a major issue. Klitori slither along the ground, lacking legs, but with four arms. A Klitor without a tail can’t move very well, as their arms are somewhat weak due to their homeworld’s low gravity. Xelaqua was going to die out here, alone in the forest. It was odd that the magora had decided to only eat xis tail, but that was a mystery for another time. Xelaqua slowly crawled under the roots of the tree, cradling xis broken arm and doing xis best not to look at the stump where xis tail had been. Klitori don’t have the same kind of vascular system we’re used to, so bleeding out isn’t actually an issue. Which is almost unfortunate for the young Xelaqua, as starvation will set in soon.
Another day passes, Xelaqua only venturing far enough to drink from the small steam. Nothing nearby looks edible, but xe moves so slow that xe can’t go far. Hours later, as Xelaqua sings quietly to ximself in his little hiding hole, xe hears a stange sound. Something almost like someone calling for xim, but the pronunciation was dreadful, something not Klitori at all. While Xelaqua knew not to talk to strangers, this might be xis only hope of survival. Calling out was hard, exhaustion was a major issue, but the sounds drew closer.
Human. Xelaqua had heard of them. Insane predators, violent, brilliant, and hardy. It was hard to imagine a sapient mammal, but here it was, calling out to others to come.
“Help need you. Xelaqua you?” Xelaqua almost giggled at the strange way it talked, obviously knowing some words in Klitori Majoris, but not much. Regardless he answered yes as they were lifting him up.
Xelaqua was amazed at the speed at which humans could move. They had set his arm (ouch!), sanitized and wrapped his tail, and given him some food and water from the colony all in less that ten minutes. They moved through the forest in a way Xelaqua had only ever seen on TV shows about predators on death worlds, where the prey might kill you as likely as other predators. Quick, silent, and most frighteningly, hard to see. Xe’d watched the other humans move about around the one carrying xim, a human named Cuthbert, but they seemed to vanish and reappear later.
Being saved was amazing, getting saved by the galaxies greatest trackers was something else entirely. And they suggested that they might be able to regrow his tale, as reptiles on their world often had the ability. They’d have someone look into it. What an insane world they must live on if regrowing limbs is something that animals can just do.

Moshang from The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System
Characters: Mobei-jun and Shang Qinghua
Submission 1:
They've known each other since teens and well into their thirties before getting together. And it's difficult to tell for MBJ, but Shang Qinghua had considered him his ideal man the entire time!
Submission 2:
Airplane has been pining for MBJ since /before the universe was even created/… he has pined for him desperately and also just been desperate in general for two (2!) lifetimes, not to mention that MBJ has been trusting in and helping sqh out since basically the very first time they met as TEENAGERS and now they are like… At Least 50,, probably older to be honest .
Xiyuan from Qi Ye/Lord Seventh
Characters: Jing Beiyuan and Wu Xi
Submission:
- Wu Xi waited for a whole year for Jing Beiyuan to return to the capital, and each day of it waited at a pavilion outside the city, just in case he happened to return that very day. Each day. For 365 days.
- When he returned, Wu Xi gave Jing Beiyuan a jade ring, which in tradition meant that Jing Beiyuan would be betrothed to him. This was when they were both teenagers
- Does Wu Xi tell Jing Beiyuan this? No. He simply gives a token of his love & affection and doesn't dare tell him yet, just pines
- Ends up in his 20s when he finally, actually tells him the meaning of the ring and confesses
Submission 2:
Additional Xiyuan propaganda: If we're counting Wu Xi's life as the Soulhook Envoy, then there's also the "several endless centuries" where he watched Jing Qi as he did his duties while Jing Qi never looked back at him, plus another 63 years that Jing Qi spent by that rock.

[Tarot Challenge] March Tarot Challenge
Tumblr media
Hello my dear followers, mutuals, soul family members and other tarot enthusiasts!
I would love to interact with you guys more in a more active way and what could be better than a challenge?
What is the Monthly Tarot Challenge?
Simply put - Each month I’ll come up with a prompt for a tarot reading to be done that month. I would like those of you who have a tarot deck of their own, regardless of your level of experience or skill, to reblog the Challenge post, adding the result of the prompted reading. Or you can make a separate post with appropriate tags and ideally tagging me so I can easily find it. This way we can all try out of the box types of readings, no prejudice, no judgement, just good fun and possibly insight and enlightenment. What do you think? Shall we go for it? Let’s start with the March Tarot Challenge!
March Tarot Prompt
Deck Interview!
What is your general vibe?
What kind of readings suit you best?
What do you think about me as a tarot reader?
How can we best collaborate?
Any message you have for me right now.
You might remember I did this exact interview with my Tarot of Casanova Deck.
Pick a deck of yours and ask it the questions above, pull the cards, record the outcome and share it with us here!
It doesn’t matter whether you interview a new deck or a deck you have been using for years.
It doesn’t matter whether you are an advanced tarot reader or you have just begun with cartomancy.
Few lines or keywords are enough as a result, though I hope you can write more as this is your personal conversation with your deck, possibly a tool you’re gonna be using for years to come.
And because my interview with Tarot of Casanova went so well, here is my entry for this month’s challenge.
The Slavic Legends Tarot
Deck Interview!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is your general vibe? - Ace of Pentacles
This deck is a seed of abundance and pleasure. It goes to the roots of a matter, making each reading blossoming with wisdom. It’s both vastly knowledgeable but also sort of humble and down-to-Earth. It might not use flashy imagery but its messages go deep and reveal the truth. This deck represents the beauty and genius of a common sense which might be sometimes neglected by tarot readers. The Slavic Legends Tarot has the potential to truly expand its significance and grow onto the tarot reader, aka me.
What kind of readings suit you best? - II The High Priestess, IX The Hermit
This deck loves any readings seeking wisdom and revealing what’s hidden. It’s likely to poke my subconscious mind, forgotten memories, even dreams. This deck can explain it all, bringing light of wisdom to the darkness, pulling the information needed from the bushes, guiding the way and installing clarite where chaos used to be. This deck loves meaningful readings, yet those with a direct impact on the querent's everyday life. It’s not a deck to predict the future, it’s a deck to help the querent create their future and build on wisdom and knowledge.
What do you think about me as a tarot reader? - 7 of Wands
The Slavic Legends Tarot deck sees me as a resilient tarot reader, the one who will often take more than enough onto themselves, trying to do all the work and becoming even more motivated by any kind of opposition. Hard-headed is the world. I don’t back up when the reading sounds unpleasant, I dig deep and carry the information with dignity and over the hills. Maybe my readings aren’t cute and pretty but they hit the right spots.
How can we best collaborate? - XVIII The Moon, XI The Justice
Aww the Moon lady has two dogs just like me! Haha, so sweet! Anyway, we already know each other for a while with this deck. We mostly work very intuitively. This is the deck I can understand very well even when it comes with no booklet. We have a certain mental connection. See the crescent moon glowing at the lady’s head? That’s the clarity of intention. Whatever I ask this deck, it comes with a clear information and message. I respect this deck greatly and it respects me in return, the balance is constantly present. As long as we can maintain a harmonious relationship, this deck is likely to bring plenty of wisdom and joy into my life.
Any message you have for me right now. - 2 of Wands
The vast horizons are awaiting me and my exploring. There’s still so much to learn and so much to experience. I should never stop wondering, craving, and being curious. Life can become an adventure, shall I decide to take the leap and start the journey. And I don’t need to be afraid as I’m going to be guided by a map and protected.

I think anon wanted to say that we don't talk about Jon's desire to be a king much, as we believe his deepest wish is to become Lord of Winterfell and have a domestic and happy life. Which is absolutely true. Nothing would ever come close to his desire to have Winterfell and a family, he likens it to a sharp as dragonglass hunger deep inside him. Such a visceral choice of words, like it is ingrained deep in him, on the other hand, him idealizing the Young Dragon and the Dragonknight are just childhood fantasies.
(post referenced)
Hi anon!
Maybe they meant to imply that we are denying a fundamental part of Jon's character by not focusing on his childhood idealization of a Targaryen conqueror? Which, of course... silly?
His idealisation is not only constantly undermined, it is also focused on a historical figure and his propaganda "De Bello Gallico"-inspired autobiographical self-praise book. The war-based equivalent of the "Aemon and Naerys" romantic songs that Sansa is into. A deep contradiction of the family's very real and very recent traumatic hostility toward House Targaryen this is not. Daeron lived over a century earlier. Aerys is only fifteen years dead.
I mean, Jon has no evident desire to be king anywhere in the text. Only the fantasy to earn through impressive merit what he cannot have by birth.
His desire for recognition and importance follows a fairly similar pattern in all attendant fantasies.
"Daeren Targaryen was only fourteen when he conquered Dorne," Jon said. The Young Dragon was one of his heroes. (AGOT, Jon I)
When Jon had been Bran's age, he had dreamed of doing great deeds, as boys always did. The details of his feats changed with every dreaming, but quite often he imagined saving his father's life. Afterward Lord Eddard would declare that Jon had proved himself a true Stark, and place Ice in his hand. Even then he had known it was only a child's folly; no bastard could ever hope to wield a father's sword. Even the memory shamed him. (AGOT, Jon VIII)
If I could show her Winterfell . . . give her a flower from the glass gardens, feast her in the Great Hall, and show her the stone kings on their thrones. We could bathe in the hot pools, and love beneath the heart tree while the old gods watched over us. The dream was sweet . . . but Winterfell would never be his to show. It belonged to his brother, the King in the North. He was a Snow, not a Stark. Bastard, oathbreaker, and turncloak . . . (ASOS, Jon V)
When Jon had been very young, too young to understand what it meant to be a bastard, he used to dream that one day Winterfell might be his. Later, when he was older, he had been ashamed of those dreams. (ASOS, Jon XI)
A son was something Jon Snow had never dared dream of, since he decided to live his life on the Wall. I could name him Robb. Val would want to keep her sister's son, but we could foster him at Winterfell, and Gilly's boy as well. [...] He wanted it, Jon knew then. He wanted it as much as he had ever wanted anything. I have always wanted it, he thought, guiltily. May the gods forgive me. It was a hunger inside him, sharp as a dragonglass blade.  (ASOS, Jon XII)
When Jon had been a boy at Winterfell, his hero had been the Young Dragon, the boy king who had conquered Dorne at the age of fourteen. Despite his bastard birth, or perhaps because of it, Jon Snow had dreamed of leading men to glory just as King Daeron had, of growing up to be a conqueror. Now he was a man grown and the Wall was his, yet all he had were doubts. He could not even seem to conquer those. (ADWD, Jon VII)
He dreams of doing something amazing and impressive. -> He dreams of being rewarded by being recognized as a true Stark. -> He is immediately ashamed of the fantasy.
Even his later, less intricate fantasies entirely circle around Winterfell. Ygritte isn't the star of that fantasy, Winterfell is. Val isn't the star of that fantasy, Winterfell is.
The Daeron worship fits very neatly into the "amazing and impressive" category of achievement that is then followed by the reward, which is Stark-centered. Copying Daeron is only a means to an end, ultimately. His young age is the main draw here, because it makes for a great projection surface for a young boy dreaming of glory ASAP so he can be just a little more worthy of being a Stark all the sooner.
Always Stark-centered. Winterfell-centered.
As you say, it's visceral and deeply ingrained. Interesting to talk about and analyze. Unlike the Daeron fantasies.

Fic Master List: Tian Ya Ke
I did a master list for my TWEWY fics, so now it's time to cover my other fandom: Tian Ya Ke. I appeared from the void with a fic in March 2022 and have written five more fics, one of them 65,000 words long, since then.
Strange how certain the journey (9,850 words) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu Characters: Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu, Jing Beiyuan, Wu Xi (Qi Ye), Zhang Chengling Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Established Relationship, Canon-Typical Use of Husband and Wife (Faraway Wanderers), Jealousy, Switching, Stories within Stories, Spoilers for TYK and QY, Non-Graphic Violence, Slight Canon Divergence Summary: When Wen Kexing watches Zhou Zishu and Jing Beiyuan together, he can see Lord Zhou. He never asked Zhou Zishu about his past before, but now they have time and maybe . . . maybe he wants to know. His feelings about Lord Seventh have nothing to do with it. - Storytelling as an act of love.
Notes: The fic that served as my introduction to the fandom. I had never even spoken to a single TYK fan and just showed up one day with 10k words of WenZhou in hand. TYK, QY, slight (mostly implied) canon divergence re: the WenZhou relationship timeline, and the beginning of it all.
We all write our own endings (3,710 words) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu Characters: Zhou Zishu, Wen Kexing Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, First Time, Developing Relationship, Mid-Canon, Canon-Typical Use of Husband and Wife (Faraway Wanderers), Spoilers for TYK and QY Summary: If I die, would it not be a loss for you?   In Zhou Zishu's experience, sex can be a currency, or a weapon. In this moment, with Wen Kexing, it's neither. - A point of divergence.
Notes: The canon divergence prequel to my first TYK fic, jumping off from the end of chapter 63. This is where I was officially writing a series, but all of the stories are pretty loosely linked and could be read standalone. It's also where I decided that every fic in the series would have a title from a Vienna Teng song, for no reason in particular.
For we are a woven thread (9,135 words) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu Characters: Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu, Zhang Chengling Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Established Relationship, Canon-Typical Use of Husband and Wife (Faraway Wanderers), Families of Choice, Murder Mystery, Small Town Horrors Summary: It should be just another night in a small jianghu town. And it would be, if not for the murders. Even backwater towns on the edge of nowhere have secrets. - A ghost story, of sorts.
Notes: This story is an interesting one for me because it has some dialogue exchanges I am particularly proud of, but gets the least attention of any of my TYK fics. That happens sometimes and I don't mind. But if you do read and enjoy it, I'm glad!
Uncover the weight of your bones (6,651 words) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu Characters: Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu, Jing Beiyuan, Wu Xi (Qi Ye), Zhang Chengling Additional Tags: Established Relationship, Missing Scene, Slight Canon Divergence, Spoilers for TYK and QY, Post-Siege of Ghost Valley, Canon-Typical Use of Husband and Wife (Faraway Wanderers), Nails of Seven Torments (Faraway Wanderers), Hurt/Comfort Summary: On Mount Changming, Wen Kexing cares for Zhou Zishu—and fears for him—as they prepare for the removal of the nails. A human experience and therefore one that Wen Kexing, so recently a ghost, finds himself laughably unprepared for. - Love in the spaces between.
Notes: This fic is me filling in some of the scenes we don't get at the end of the novel. This one is the most closely linked to the canon divergence, because it happens before the extras, so should ideally be read within the continuity of the series. But I respect a rebel, if you don't feel like doing that.
Of a tender history (2,503 words) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu Characters: Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu, Zhang Chengling Additional Tags: Established Relationship, Post-Canon, Top Wen Kexing/Bottom Zhou Zishu, Canon-Typical Use of Husband and Wife (Faraway Wanderers), Married Sex Summary: To live is a peculiar thing. Or: Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu, in moments.
Notes: This is my gift fic for MT, from the Immortal Wanderers exchange, and not related to the other stories. Post-canon WenZhou with non-linear storytelling, which is something I really enjoy writing. Nothing heavy in this one—it's mostly WenZhou being happy together.
From Halfway Along (65,334 words) Chapters: 21/21 Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu Characters: Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu, Gu Xiang (Faraway Wanderers), Zhang Chengling, Jing Beiyuan, Wu Xi (Qi Ye), Cao Weining Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Science Fiction, Space Opera, Developing Relationship, Art Crime, Human Experimentation (mostly voluntary), corporate warfare, Canon-Typical Talk of Death and Dying, Canon-Typical Use of Husband and Wife (Faraway Wanderers), Extensive World Building, Families of Choice, Telepathy Summary: After dedicating years to the service of an empire, Zhou Zishu has walked away to spend what's left of his life wandering the galaxy. And if that freedom has come at a cost . . . doesn't everything? His plans did not include getting entangled with a dangerous man on a mission of his own. A man who not only looks at him, but sees.
Notes: I left this for the end of the list—the WenZhou space opera AU novel no one asked for but I was delighted to deliver. If I am known for anything in the TYK fandom, it's this fic. It is very much a Hadassah Story, with a lot of hallmarks of my style and sensibilities. I also structured it like a TV show, with cold opens in every chapter but (by design) one. I used to work in entertainment and From Halfway Along probably shows it more than any of my other fics.

I've been wondering this for awhile. Why wasn't Elizabeth of York considered as a legitimate candidate for the throne in 1483 after her brothers disappeared?
Once the princes were murdered or out of the way: Yorkist supporters became angry and started looking for another claimant to the throne to oust Richard III from power. It seems one of the reasons they settled on Henry Tudor was because he: was male, had a claim to the English crown via the Beaufort line, and also wasn't married. Unlike say The Duke of Buckingham, Earl of Lincoln etc. Earl of Warwick was still a child.
This seems like one of the biggest reasons he was able to garner so much support by late 1483-1485. Conveniently unmarried, he pledged to marry Princess Elizabeth and restore what many saw as the true royal family to power.
I like Henry VII but also think it's sad the nobles that fought for him ignored Elizabeth of York's arguably much stronger claim to the throne. Not to her sisters and Margaret Beaufort's claims. She should have been crowned Queen Elizabeth I instead. Imagine how differently the 16th century would have gone. If her granddaughters were accepted as ruling Queens why wasn't Elizabeth of York?
Did she not want to rule or was England not willing to accept a female monarch yet?
The truth is that even before her brothers were born and Elizabeth was her father's eldest legitimate child, Elizabeth of York was never considered Edward IV's heir in the sense of one day being able to ascend the throne. Instead, before Edward V was born, English people looked at Edward's brother George as the next-in-line, even though Edward himself preferred to leave things more ambiguous so as to not give George too much power. Elizabeth was never given the education or responsibilities of a king's heir, and although English people did consider women as capable of passing down a claim, they had not so far considered them as capable of bearing the crown.
Remember this was a time when Henry VI, a legitimate king, son and grandson of the last successive kings, was deposed because primogeniture discourse aside (which was an excuse anyway), he was deemed too weak and incapable to rule, not 'manly' enough to handle the war with France or to lead armies on the battlefield. He was infantilised and turned into a innocent fool who was dominated by his wife and was almost stripped of his masculinity altogether. Elizabeth's father had won his crown by showing off his masculine leadership abilities and by accusing the past queen (Margaret of Anjou) of running England into the ground in her condition as an unnatural woman (as she had dared to lead the country, which women were not supposed to do). Queen Margaret was perceived as a transgressive woman who had outstepped the boundaries of her gender and proper place. Do you think people would be happy to, only a generation later, give the sceptre to someone who was a female? The answer is: they weren't, and it's supremely ironic that the same gendered yorkist propaganda that paved the way for Edward IV's ascension would hinder the ascension of his own daughter.
Henry Tudor was the ideal candidate not only because he was male, had royal blood and was unmarried. Henry was closely associated with his uncle Henry VI, who by 1485 was venerated as a saint in England: Henry was literally the nephew of a holy king. His mother Margaret Beaufort had been considered Henry VI's successor by some as far back as 1450. In the continent, some people even erroneously called him Henry VI's youngest son, which brings us to the next point: Henry Tudor was extremely well articulated in terms of international support. King Louis XI of France had tried to receive him in France since 1471 — after all, the Valois kings and the Tudors were cousins (through Catherine of Valois), and the French king was happy to say that himself. Given their past support for the Lancastrians, France was only too willing to support Henry in his bid for the English throne. Besides France, Henry had a good relationship with the Duke of Brittany, a place where he had been exiled for more than a decade, and received support from that duchy too. Lastly, the Tudors were also extremely well-liked in Wales — Henry was literally considered the fulfiller of an ancient Welsh prophecy by an important political class in Wales since his birth — and the Welsh support Henry received made all the difference at Bosworth.
Not any man with a claim to the English throne at that time was as well-articulated as Henry, especially when we add Margaret Beaufort's groundwork to build his base of support in England too. David Horspool, who wrote a book about Richard III, has highlighted Henry Tudor's unique position in challenging Richard. I think that if Henry Tudor had failed in 1485 it's very likely that other people would have risen against Richard III to challenge him for his crown, but it's much less likely they would succeed as Henry Tudor did. I tend to agree with this idea. Henry's Yorkist supporters (in name of his wife) were a fundamental part of why he was able to get to the throne, but they alone wouldn't be sufficient to earn him the crown if it weren't for Henry's international and Welsh support too. He was only able to gather that support in his condition as a Valois, a Tudor and a Beaufort.
To sum up, Elizabeth of York lived in a time when the English crown was extremely fragile in terms of legitimacy and support. The crisis of the Hundred Years War developed into grievous internal strife and a bloody civil conflict where the performance of kingship mattered more than anything else, especially a performance steeped in chivalric values and the male-dominated world of knighthood orders. In a time with so many other male claimants around, Elizabeth of York could never perform in the masculine way the English people expected their monarch to behave. As said by a chronicler in the 1470s, they wanted 'a prynce to wynne mennys hertys' — a prince (masculine) to win men's (masculine) hearts.

Thurinus
A companion to Agrippa, in more ways than one.
I When you're four years old, your father dies. You don't recall his face. You are nearly crushed By the crowds, stricken with the stench Of burning flesh and flowers On the bonfire that is Rome.
Your mother remarries. Her new husband Has a son of his own. He needs no scion of moneychangers Polluting his dinner parties Or drawing whispers When you cannot stop wheezing.
II You go with Grandma Julia; Mother murmurs that she will write. Grandma soothes you with stories Of her little brother, who defied a dictator While the Senate's "best men" shivered, Owning nothing but his name.
Little brother isn't so little now And flatterers pay you false praise. You flout your stepfather by flouting them For common Marcus Agrippa. His name means nothing; yours, too much. But he sees you, and not a Caesar.
III You are eight, your sister eleven, Her husband thrice her age. Grandma's brother objects In a dispatch that demands what you can't. His legions cannot bring her back, but There is thunder rumbling in Gaul.
As you turn twelve, Grandma dies. You return to mother and her husband And speak first at the funeral. From Ravenna arrives a letter Complimenting your Latin. You reread it every week.
IV You are permitted at Philippus' dinners (For your stepfather is Philippus) If you stay silent as Scipio schemes, Cato conspires, Marcellus maneuvers To conquer the conqueror Who asks after your health.
You learn to smile at Cicero And pretend to Pompey And they smile back, for sickness Has fashioned you small, And you look younger than you are. You let them think that.
When you are thirteen, the man who denounced a dictator Becomes one.
V Caesar's hairline is receding And war has wrinkled his brow But he bursts in at a banquet With a laugh like lightning, Invades Philippus' villa Like he invaded Italy.
Caesar dissects you with his eyes, Drenches you in self-doubt, But you will not back away. Throat thick, you ask a favor For Agrippa's brother abroad, Who betrayed Caesar for Cato.
VI You're too fragile to follow Caesar. You are a man yet not a man Garbed in a grown-up toga, Confined to your mother's care. A steward stole your inheritance, Leaving nothing but your name.
Caesar brings back the brother Whole and healthy. The hug From your best friend makes you Want. You wonder, but dare not ask, What Caesar felt for Nicomedes.
VII You can tell you're being tested Supervising Caesar's triumph. You faint, sun-stricken, feverish Your thin form failing again. Caesar sails for Spain without you. You follow anyway.
At seventeen, you're seasick, Shipwrecked on the Spanish shore, Roused by Agrippa half-drowned. You cross enemy country, Are received in Roman camp. Caesar is speechless.
VIII You get no grace from your great-uncle. Caesar showers you with work And compels you to give commands. Half-panicked, you keep pace, A drizzle to his downpour, Refusing to be riven.
You bring Agrippa on the boat home, And steel yourself for a storm From Caesar--who smiles, Doesn't care if you share a bunk, Sends you both to the Balkans To assault Parthia at his side.
When you are eighteen, your idol and idealism Are stabbed to death.
IX The legions want you not to leave. Caesar's blessing is a blade In your back, a poisoned plum. They promise to protect you, But your mother begs you come And Agrippa is all the armor you need.
Evasion's impossible: Italy Embraces you, and grown men grieve As you've never seen. "Caesar"-- His name is a nation's hymn. They wonder about his will; You didn't think he could die.
X You weren't his closest kinsman: Pinarius has better blood; Pedius, years of service. Lucius has the lineage And Antony has it all. You're hardly one-half Roman.
Philippus sends strange letters Warning you, but for what, He won't put in writing. You meet him and your mother With visitors in their villa. Caesar's people procured his will.
XI
A pittance to Pedius and Pinarius; A provision to the Roman poor; To Antony, nothing; to Lucius, less; All else, he left to you: his land, His books, his bank accounts, His network and his name.
A posthumous adoption: possible, But odd, and Caesar's perfect prose Is unusually unclear. He's left you one last exit To comfortable obscurity. But if you're brave--
XII "It's madness," says your mother, Who sees only your small bones. "A folly," says Philippus, Who cares only for his comforts. You push past them, grab Agrippa, And sit down with Caesar's men.
You are eighteen. Agrippa's lips Are the first to utter your true name, Which you hadn't known till now. You will murder the murderers Who felled your father, but tonight, As thunder rumbles in Rome,
You kill Gaius Octavius Thurinus, And rise as Caesar.
