Yasss!! I’m so glad you liked it. The director Charlotte Wells and producer of the film Barry Jenkins did a q&a after the movie in LA that was really great. Hearing her story about the movie and her dad was so sweet! I agree, no win but I’m so happy he was nominated. Can’t wait to see him with Saoirse Ronan (Foe), Josh O’Connor (History of Sound) and Andrew Scott (Strangers). I think he’s really choosing some great roles. Such a strong performance from Paul, so much more subtle than the other nominees. Also agree on his involvement with Gladiator! How exciting for him. Oh! And I remember you sent me a link for the sequel announcement but I didn’t get the chance to answer. I noticed Gladiator was added to Netflix at the same time that news came out. I’ll need to give it a rewatch, I’m sure it still holds up. With Paul involved, my expectations have definitely been raised!

Looking forward to seeing Causeway for BTH too. Aftersun put me in the mood for another good drama so I’ll try to watch tomorrow or Saturday.

I have to say I gave Triangle of Sadness a try and didn’t gel with it. It seemed, on the surface, like it had all the aesthetics of a Wes Andersen film without the charm. Idk, I’m going to really have to sit down with it again to see if maybe I’ll appreciate it more on a second viewing.

i’m too old for chainsaw man

finished reading chainsaw man. it failed to traumatise me so it’s whatever. the hype fell flat, but hey that’s standard for me, 80% of the hyped stuff doesn’t even look interesting enough for me to try. and most of the stuff i do try is just whatever. spoilers ahead for the manga so far so like till chapter 106 or sth though i don’t go into details.

with chainsaw man i think i’m too old for it. things done for shock value tire me, leave me completely indifferent. and there’s just so much of that in this manga. the puke recurring gag, the constant maiming and killing of everyone, the constant plot twist that x is bad actually, the creepy sex stuff - i’m referring to makima shit and the gratuitous lesbianism and not to the fact that denji wants to get laid, if anything interesting was done with the latter i’d’ve been ecstatic but it just kept disappointing and being reset (i try to explain what i mean by that later). these things fail to shock me because i’m old and i’ve seen/read too much. they don’t offend me because i’m not automatically offended by poorly handled topics if the intention doesn’t seem malicious - it just makes me lose interest because it makes me think that there are works which handle this better and i could be enjoying them instead. and if the author wipes out the cast too fast before they grow on me i automatically emotionally disengage and i just start to expect it and wait for it. but that means that i don’t get attached to the characters, thus the story can’t grab me and traumatise me.

it reads really fast but for me probably especially so because i wasn’t invested much. it didn’t make me pause. and i kept going and begging it: do something interesting, show me what the hype is about. do something interesting at least with denji, power and aki. do something interesting with makima - and no what it does with her isn’t interesting, it’s telegraphed really early on how her character is going to go and at least for me it just lacked flavour - like i think it’s foreshadowed well, it’s just not exciting. there are so many solid ideas in the story that could’ve gone somewhere but at least for me they never go to any really interesting places. the author just glides on the surface never really diving in.

the problem is that when it comes to denji the story just resets several times. like things happen in the story and they seem to have impact but then a reset happens and they stop meaning anything? and i think it also happens to the other characters it’s just that i only sort of managed to care about denji but the others barely or not at all. but also i’m not really able to care about denji when he gets constantly reset. i feel like i’m watching a playthough of an rpg where someone savescums their dialogue options and choices but kinda isn’t open about it, like acts as if they aren’t doing that? it’s hard to describe.

and i’m even ready to agree with someone who’d claim that this isn’t bad writing but some modern art writing choice. it’s done so regularly that i’m ready to buy that. it just leaves me completely indifferent. i’ve never been into reading experimental novels or stories much, my adhd isn’t very conducive to that. but there was a time in my life when i watched a lot of arthouse cinema, like a lot. i have a very high tolerance for it, static single camera shots that last hours, dialogue that goes on for 20 minutes without pause? been there done that. abstract, surrealist, absurdist, highly aestheticised - you name it i’ve watched an example of it. i’ve also watched films from at least 30% of countries around the world. but what that gave me is an opinion on what i like and also that artsy and rare doesn’t have mean good.

and i feel that with chainsaw man a lot of the hype is about it being a lot of people’s first artsy title. idk, maybe i’m wrong.

also the film references in chainsaw man are hyped. and maybe i’d’ve cared about if i wasn’t so fucking done with the nostalgia culture we have now. like i’ve been done with this thing almost since the moment it started like what 10 years ago? and now i just recoil from anything that is nostalgia infused. so references just leave me cold, too close to that nostalgia shit. sorry.

i’ll say something nice about it to wrap this up. chainsaw man isn’t a bad manga it’s just nothing special imo. i like the visuals though. the author isn’t really this perfect kind of manga artist but at least that gives the thing a visual flavour, it’s nice in its imperfection. i read a lot of webcomics and the vibe is strong with chainsaw man. and i like the character designs and the devil designs. and the world building is fun at times.

I feel so pathetic just waiting around for it to be the weekend again so I can see him again. How do you deal with feeling lonely or needy when you can’t see B? I just don’t know if I feel comfortable saying to him that I miss him or I miss kissing him or something. - age gap crush anon ❤️

Hey I'm sorry my replies have been a wee bit slow I've had work and been like overwhelmed by life haha. Also B left mine yesterday morning and I just got so depressed because (convenient for this ask) I missed him haha.

I think like, message back and forth and don't feel too weird about the occasional double message. And again just remember that all these new love giddy feelings you're getting, he's getting them too. Like men do experience the same dopamine rush that we do, they just don't express it the same way we do. Know that if you're missing him he's probably missing you too.

Something I noticed with B is that he didn't start to express his feelings of missing me until I admitted that I missed him and didn't like not getting to see him.

And like you can totally make a joke of it too, I make self deprecating "lol I'm sorry I'm so needy" jokes all the time haha.

Idk though, I wouldn't worry too much about coming across as overbearing or whatever, I think as well like, adults don't do the whole "I have to leave it an hour before I reply to them or they will think I'm too keen" thing, they just reply to eachother when they have time idk. Like I message B way more than he messages me, and I'll double and sometimes triple message all the time because I know he's not ignoring me, he's just been busy.

I don't feel like this is actually solid easy to follow advice so sorry about that, I kinda have to go off vibes when I'm sending him messages, and sometimes he will take like 24 hours to two days to reply to me, but like when he does I can tell he obvs doesn't think I'm being too needy or too much.

And omg unfortunately in terms of coping with missing him I don't even know, you may have noticed from my tumblr posts but when I don't get to see B for a few days I spiral hahaha.

No idk, I try to just motivate myself with focusing on when I'll next see him, or just finding tasks that I need to do to distract myself like writing. I watch pride and prejudice and lost in translation a lot bc they are my comfort films and they give me like that childish cuddly feeling.

Also me and B phone in the week between seeing eachother.

But for real, just distractions. Just work out what's best going to usefully occupy your mind and try to force yourself to be distracted. But also, like lean into the missing him and yearning becayse it's part of the joy of that beginning stsge tbh. Like let your mind wander and daydream about him, and remember the cute things he's said to you/done for you, like reimagine all the time u have spent together so far.

That's what I do, especially when I'm like, struggling to sleep without B.

Can I take this ask to say how excited I am for Eurovision this year and I’m American! Idk if you seen the Netflix Eurovision movie with Will Ferrell and Rachel mcaddams but it’s great and last year my sister and I some how watched Eurovision on peacock and was both amazed and confused the whole time. oh, loving vincent! i’ve heard of it, but haven’t watched it (yet?), no. it kinda sounds like something i’d enjoy though.

personally i only know three people who play genshin on their phone, but two of them are samsung users lol. my old laptop would heat up like crazy (i mean... it’s like 8 or 9 years old at this point) but with my current laptop i hardly have any issues regarding that. that said i’ve still got to play on low graphics settings because it just lags a ton otherwise, but i hardly mind that. (tho i haven’t been able to play genshin in weeks bc it keeps crashing for some reason :( i’m waiting it out & hoping an update of my laptop will fix it but who knows. i might get a ps5 for christmas though so i’ll at least be able to play it on there ig? and maybe sooner on a phone bc i definitely need a new one even sooner.)

ah, my meds. i’ve got a prescription now, but they’re out of sale until at the very least january :') i really like studying with classmates/friends bc i hardly have the motivation to study alone tbh but if there’s at least someone else i do. i’ve p much got a study bestie tho and for most subjects we study together :D

well where i live i’m pretty sure you can’t study marine biology since there is no ocean lmao. so i might just study biology & then move somewhere for the specifics? idk. but i’ve got lots of time to figure it out still lol yep, hopefully it’ll get better,, medicine is 5 years here too! forensic medicine is p much examining dead (human) bodies, either bc they died in the hospital/in an accident (so for science) or because they died an unnatural death (criminology). tho the forensic medicine field entails more than just forensic pathology (doing autopsies), e.g. you could be working at a lab doing dna testing.

ngl i hardly know anything abt the few kpop bands i listen to, i just enjoy their music lol. but yeah i’m sure she knows more.

no no i get it, there truly are a lot,, i like silver as a color, especially in jewlery! tbh i prefer it over gold in most contexts.

ohh edits,, no, i haven’t done anything apart from cosplay attempts, making merch, writing fic & doing art for fandom so far lol. i don’t use tiktok & hardly use youtube for fandom stuff though (i usually listen to asmr or hour long explanation vids on yt, not much more adhkgdfjf) but if i do come across edits somehow, i’m always excited :D imo they’re very fun, but i don’t have the right apps or space on my phone for them to make any.

I don’t read books that often unless I have to, but rn I’m reading A Christmas Carol bc I’m watching through most all of the film adaptations and I wanted to compare it to the book. After watching ~50 Christmas carol movies in like 2 months it isn’t really anything special.

I only saw a couple movies in theaters this year, but the first thing that came to mind for this was Sonic 2 which was NOT a good movie by any means but I saw it w my friend on the day it came out while we were on vacation and it was hilarious so I’m gonna have to go w that.

Seinfeld. Obviously Hetalia and by extension history (specifically Dutch + German) but every year around this time I get rlly into a popular adult comedy for several months, permanently altering my psyche and this year that is Seinfeld. I feel like my brain noticed that my life is going absolutely insane rn and decided it was necessary to deploy the SpIn.

What's something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?

Ap European history. All last summer and the end of last year I was like “omg I cant wait to take ap euro next year it’s gonna be so fun I love European history and I’ve heard the teacher is awesome” and then the year starts and she keeps getting sick and by October (abt 2 months into school) she’s only been in class like half the days. So obviously everyone in the class starts getting rlly annoyed bc this was obviously not at all planned for at all as we’d been doing world history II work we’d already done last year the whole time, we are barely learning any new content, and our grades weren’t getting updated so a lot of ppl were failing the class. Then, the teacher misses 2 weeks straight of school and we’re all confused and annoyed. This goes on until one morning I’m eating my animal crackers and my dads like “hey did you know [teachers name]” and I’m like “yeah” and he’s like “oh well she just died” so then we spend like a month trying to get things back in order and getting tossed around the history department like a hot potato with anyone willing to teach us. Then like a week ago we finally got a permanent teacher and apparently we are like 2 months behind on content and we have to do a whole unit this week and a bunch of reading over break to maybe be ready for the ap test in may.

What's something you wish to have at this moment?

Free time. I have so many projects and tests this week it’s crazy. It’s ~9:30pm my time as I’m writing this and I’ve used pretty much all my free time since I woke up making this post.

okay so the first bit was pretty dull imo (though the ambushes/traps they laid were pretty cool, although i was pretty sure for the second attack the orcs were doing the trap this time), mostly cause i don’t like arondir and bronwyn and theo, but when the númenoreans rocked up it suddenly got interesting heheheh

i like all the númenoreans!!! i don’t want any of them to die. esp elendil (okay i can’t remember what happened to him actually i do remember /facepalm/ lol), isildur (well, we know what happens to him rip), his two friends (one name escapes me atm and the other one is half escaping me) and eärien. not too fond of the queen or pharazon, but hey.

um. HALBRAND. the actor is really good and the character is just still FASCINATING and 

OOH. how did the broken sword/key thing get replaced with the axe??? did halbrand do it perhaps? on the other hand, perhaps he didn’t at all, because adar could’ve handed off the real thing to any orc he passed whilst escaping, so...

also it’s still really funny that halbrand is king of the southlands with next to no proof ksjnfgkjfngkfnknfkg i mean REALLY he could’ve just taken that thing off a dead man like he said he did skjfkgjnfkg like, this is the fastest way to get rich and get treated like royalty and have your own army, i guess

i really liked galadriel and adar’s chat because seriously she sounded as insane as he did. and i mean, yeah, i get it when adar was like ‘don’t they deserve a home too’ (not actually what he said bc i can’t remember, but yeah) because... i guess they do??? in a way lmao, idk

btw the bit where theo was uncomfortable with his guilt, and also that he felt ~powerful, i totally predicted that word/said it out loud before he said it and i was like YAS

okay yeah anyway!! that ep was pretty exciting except for the various bouts of cheesiness and crappy dialogue lines, mostly at the start of the ep. the fight scenes looked great, the series is more brutal than the lotr films (you know, that scene where they started killing people in the tavern) and hmmmmm oh yeahhh why the fuck was galadriel just standing there watching the ash (?) cloud come right at her at the end of the ep lol (but i guess halbrand will save her SKJDNKG)

i can’t wait to see the gifs from this ep. also, there was this one unintentionally funny moment (but also totally cool) where a horse in the background dipped its head?? or something. and it was just really funny with the dialogue going on/about to happen. i wonder if someone will gif it. i don’t even remember where that scene was anymore

anyway look how much i rambled!!! shows how excited i was about most of this ep. i also did predict that the sword shard/key thing was replaced with a piece of wood (mostly because of my knowledge that this is ep 6 out of 8 and they’re in a story LOL), and well, it turned out to be an axe, but that’s effectively the same thing i guess. can’t wait to read theories about how it was swapped out. either adar did it himself, or halbrand did it with his ~sleight of hand schtick. mmmm am excited!!! would be fitting if he’s sauron anyway since he’s ~king of the southlands

at the start i wasn’t sure about galadriel/her character, but now... i’m a bit more sure but also still unsure lol. like, i get that they’re giving her a character arc and she’ll eventually be zen with some scary!face moments, and it IS like a thousand years (iirc?) before she reaches that point, so... i get it... but on the other hand as someone who’s very old... i feel like she could still be angry and vengeful but also have a bit more ... weightiness to her... maybe i’d just like her to be darker lol, like you see for an instant in lotr1. also, some more arrogance would suit her nicely ahaha ... hm actually that is already kind of in the show, like when she rocked up on númenor and started demanding stuff in front of everyone’s salad, but for some reason it came off as less arrogant and more lacking in diplomatic skills. hmmmmm not sure why
