y'all. how the hell do you describe Disco Elysium to anyone who isn't familiar with it. i've had to do this for 3 or 4 different people now and each time i've said something completely different. just calling it a murder mystery rpg feels so insufficient so i'll start going into the game's exploration of political ideologies or maybe its message of maintaining hope against all odds and finding beauty & kindness even within a desolate environment but actually maybe i should talk about how the game puts you in the shoes of someone with addiction and trauma and explores topics like power structures and government and revolution and the consequences of war or perhaps i should talk about the skills and how they function and how sometimes failed skill checks make gameplay that much more fun because of their absurdity and well at that point i have to mention how absurdly funny the game is but is that as important as the fact that this game has some of the best world-building and the most beautiful and poignant writing i've ever read but wait i can't not mention how Kim's the best sidekick you'll ever meet in a game and the exploration of his experience as (half) diaspora seriously hit me deep but hold on i haven't touched on the gorgeous art style or the iconic music or the fact that—
