#if dazai did something that contradicted that

do you see chuuya losing trust in dazai in the near future? (maybe that’s how dazai comes to accept that he cares?)
There was another ask similar to this one, and it could honestly go two ways. Either Dazai decides to step up and earn that trust back OR his self-loathing gets the better of him and he decides it's better this way.

Yandere Fyodor and Dazai Compare and Contrast (How They'd Treat Their Darling)
Links: {Masterlist} {Yandere Fyodor Alphabet}{Yandere Dazai Alphabet} {Yandere PM!Dazai Alphabet}
Fyodor as a yandere is such an interesting concept.
Fyodor is a complex character who I believe is very hard to write and pull off.
He's deceiving in everyway of the sort, and I can see his darling having a hard time trying to figure him out. One day he can calm and quiet, and the next day he's sadistic and a bit more temperamental than yesterday.
I can see him acting like this as a way to keep you on edge. He isn't bipolar by any means, but he enjoys seeing the uncertainty on your face, the constant worry that a single slip up can through him into a frenzy, or he'll not even react and just let you deal with it on your own.
This is kinda where I compare him to Dazai. Dazai is very switchy in the same way, but he's a lot more consistent. Dazai rarely changes his behavior, but he actively changes his reactions, his actions often contradicting his personality. This is where being Dazai's darling become stressful because you'll think you know how he'll act, but in reality he'll react in a way that's completely out of character.
Fyodor and Dazai are full of mind games. Fyodor would rarely hits his darling. He finds it much more satisfying to see you stress your own self out, terrified of what he'll say or do to you, watching as you break down and pathetically try to hide yourself from his presence.
Dazai is sadistic, but not as much as he was when he was in the Port Mafia. He hates the idea of physically hurting his darling, and when he does he sinks into regret.
Now, where would they keep you?
I can actually see Fyodor bringing you along in his endeavors, and maybe even get you involved as a spy if you're powerful enough. I don't see Fyodor keeping you a secret from the ADA, and often uses you as a way to mock them, saying how they can't even save you. You're often viewing all his plans, and if a mission is a little too dangerous for his liking, he'll hide you in a place that you can't escape from.
Now, Dazai is more of an abusive boyfriend type yandere. He let's you like your normal life, go to work, hang out with friends, go to the mall, normal civilian stuff, but, he's watching you the entire time. You slip up once, and you'll deal with it at home. Dazai doesn't want to keep you in doors 24/7, but he also doesn't want you to leave him. You tell anyone about the horrors of your relationship, and you're left crying on the floor of the bathroom, the door locked as Dazai threatens you from the end. I also want to note, Dazai rarely if ever yells at you. The low and coldness in his voice is enough to throw you into tears.
So, who would be the worse to deal with full time?
Fyodor, here's why.
Dazai gives you a lot of freedom, much more than the average yandere, so you can live a mostly normal life. With Fyodor, you're stuck with him 24/7. He won't let you go anywhere by yourself, and has killed a few of your friends and family. So, if you did escape, you wouldn't last very long, and you wouldn't have anyone to support you.
The one good thing about Fyodor is that he's a pretty good balance of giving you false hope, and shutting your dreams down completely.
I do have one idea though. What would happen if you were acting as a spy for Fyodor, not for the ADA, but maybe for a powerful figure Fyodor wants something from, and you end up running into Dazai. It's one of the rare times you're alone, so I wonder how things would go.

Sorry to bother you but I’ve been getting into BSD and Chuuya’s my fave, but I’ve been seeing some contradictory things in fanfic so…
Does Chuuya actually have a god sealed inside him? I thought it was just like his power without limitations and was dubious of those takes, but since eldritch beings can apparently be a thing (and not an ability), I think it could be plausible either way.
Though even if it’s not I can see why people would use that route for some good angst.
This is not a bother at all! This is something I very much like to talk about
if you're really new I do recommend you go read both "Dazai, Chuuya, Fifteen Years Old" and "STORM BRINGER" light novels (but SB especially), not only are they great books with Chuuya as the focal point but they will help answer your question in depth (you can buy the English translations but I can help you find the translation online if that's what you need, just message me again)
The short version is that Arahabaki being an actual god, a separate entity from Chuuya that has a personality/a voice/desires, is a common fanon trope, but not a canon fact. The truth is more complex and much more fun, lore-wise, in my opinion
And now the long version, because I'm passionate about this and this is my excuse to deep dive into it (spoilers for Fifteen)
In Fifteen, Chuuya says this:
Tumblr media
Chuuya himself presents "Arahabaki" as nothing more than pure power. No thoughts, no personality, but powerful for sure.
That phrasing in Fifteen created a lot of confusion I think, talking about gods as real but also not:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I think it's more of a symbolic reference, talking about immense power that seem out of this world. Because in practice, as Chuuya said before, "Arahabaki" is simply raw power, not an entity. You can't pray to it, it can't understand you, it can't perform miracles (which is why he knew the Old Boss couldn't have been brought back by Arahabaki and it was all nonsense from the start)
I'm also putting part of the blame on the anime, where they decided (while not being exactly wrong either, out of context it's weird) to illustrate Chuuya "floating in a bluish-black darkness, surrounded by a transparent seal" and being pulled out by a hand:
Tumblr media
like this:
Tumblr media
When, if you actually reread that part in the novel with knowledge about Storm Bringer, it's actually this moment that was being referred to:
Tumblr media
Which brings us to Storm Bringer! (heavy spoilers I'm serious)
Tumblr media
"Project Arahabaki" was the Japanese government's attempt to create an ability weapon from an individual. They wanted to craft a singularity that could be used multiple times, thus granting them access to power that should not be accessible normally. They based their research on what France had discovered through Verlaine. The objective is to create a massive energy output through a self-contradicting ability, for which you need a vessel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chuuya is the device. "Arahabaki" is the massive energy. That massive energy can control gravity to the point of being able to create localized black holes! N implied that part of the lab's work for the Arahabaki Project was to modify Chuuya's body to be able to withstand the constant gravity effects on it so he doesn't just die. Chuuya's normal use of his ability doesn't seem to have any drastic effects on him, and his physical resilience (to getting hit, stabbed, poisoned, shot, electrocuted, to going through a black hole) does seem to imply they did succeed at least in part.
Tumblr media
And this bit here explains why "Arahabaki" was the chosen name for the project; unexplained phenomena across History that can be linked to an ability going haywire, but were attributed to god-like interventions at the time. So you're a funny little mad scientist, you read research papers from another mad scientist that named their own creation after a mythological monster, and you decide to do the same with your own local folklore.
But!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's still something to be said about how "Arahabaki" is a singularity, and therefore, has its own set of rules. Chuuya does loose control, Chuuya does regress to a sort of destructive instinct while under Corruption. But "Arahabaki" is still no more than an ability singularity. Here's what is said about Guivre and Arahabaki:
Tumblr media
They are both singularity life-forms. They exist because they are singularities; outside of it, they are nothing. The inner workings of abilities are still mysterious, but most of them have a link to their wielder's desires. For example, Atsushi's Tiger is there to protect him, a mirror to his will to live no matter what. Verlaine's Guivre is similar:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guivre was a beast born out of Verlaine's loneliness and resulting hatred. He felt deeply alone in not feeling/being human, and through Pan's (his "creator") special "programming" of Verlaine's ability, N was able to trigger the true form of his singularity with that flare gun and metal powder, which took the form of Guivre. It's what the hat was supposed to prevent, but Verlaine had already lost it by then.
Tumblr media
Chuuya's Arahabaki is probably similar. Its first apparition was when Rimbaud tried to absorb him and use his ability for himself, and any subsequent use is linked to grief and survival. Basically, if they're their own entities, they are still born in a specific context and deeply linked to the original ability user's character. And Arahabaki? Only exists if Chuuya uses his activation phrase to get rid of the limitations put into place to prevent him from exploding:
Tumblr media
More about about Corruption: SB is kind enough to give us an explanation on how the nullification process works, right here:
Tumblr media
Chuuya's self-contradicting ability makes him able to control gravity through the sheer amount of energy it creates by permanently interacting with itself. It is kept under control through the use of an activation phrase, O grantors of dark disgrace, do not wake me again, which, after being either said or thought by Chuuya, will open his "Gate" (which I'm interpreting as a blocker put in place by the lab so the singularity doesn't just kill him, like those poor people they mentioned existed through History), and by opening it, "free Arahabaki's true power" (aka Corruption). When Dazai uses his ability on him, the base self-contradicting ability is nullified, which cancels out the singularity taking place, which stops Corruption and allows that "Gate" to close again. The red markings are there because they're cool and fun.
To conclude, I'll let Dazai do the honors:
Tumblr media
bonus: what does that mean for Chuuya's ability?
bons 2: Perceived timeline of Chuuya's past and what happened to to create confusion around his humanity

osamu dazai ★↷
from anything dazai expected from you it was definitely not that. the first few months of your relationship had gone mostly smoothly and you both were quite content with everything.
but one day out of pure curiosity and luck, he stumbled across your file among the other members files. he knew it was probably wrong but he knew you well enough right? he probably could guess everything written on there.
but not that. it was a pleasant surprise to say the least, for him. turns out you had quite a hidden side to your normally sweet persona. as before joining the agency you had built a reputation upon being able to infiltrate and destroy organisations within a few or just a single night.
of course when you seeked to join the agency you were met with hesitantcy from the president, but after assuring your loyalty and change of heart you got in.
kind of reminded him of him and a certain slug... whatever. upon finding this information he couldn't help but be slightly smug about it. i mean who wouldn't be if they found out their sweet, kind partner had a previous 'reign of terror' - that sounded cooler to him.
and when he next saw you, you could tell he somehow found out. fron the way he acted around you to the subtle questions trying to pry information out of you. maybe you could give him the details.
chuuya nakahara ★↷
in similar fashion, chuuya had found out about your little secret through looking at your files. as when you originally joined the port mafia and put quite high in the ranks, he had suspicions about you. but when you became closer he didn't think too much of it anymore.
and when you started dating, he had felt like it was less of an evasion of privacy a couple of months in. and so with huge curiosty he looked through your file. he was surprised but again felt smug about it.
seems like just because you two were both short in height, didn't mean you two weren't any weaker than everyone else. perhaps stronger. as he two had destroyed an organisation overnight with a stupid mackerel.
that probably made sense about why someone as kind as you had been quite the member. he was slightly disappointed you didn't tell him outright about it but understood. i mean he didn't tell you about when he did it so you two were equal. but now he probably would have to tell you if you were interested.
probably didn't bring it up to you as that was in the past but he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride, knowing you had did that.
nikolai gogol ★↷
nikolai absolutely loved to find this out. he had first met you through your introduction into the doa. apparently you had some kind of potential, he wasn't really paying attention.
but what peeked his interest in you was how in this organisation, you were just sweet to everyone. he never saw you in action but surely you were good right?
and eventually when you two got together he still didn't think much of you being in the doa. until fyodor had show him something quite interesting. which made him absolutely ecstatic to find out more about you and whatever little secrets you hid behind that sweet facade.
and he asked you so many questions about it. he was so proud of you! not that he wasn't before but this was just one of the best twists about you. why wouldn't he be proud of his partner who destroyed organisations overnight or a few days. and the fact that they had given you such a cool nickname.
seems like you got a small fanclub as not only your boyfriend but an admirer of your dark secret.
tecchou suehiro ★↷
he had been sifting through old unsolved cases with teruko because she got bored and needed something to do when he came across something that peeked his interest, so he slipped it into his pocket.
you two had been dating for a couple of months now, despite leading very different lives - him a hunting dog, you a civilian - you two made it work. but on that case he noticed your name as a suspect which made him curious.
so he looked into it. it was an usual but simple case, someone had destroyed an organisation overnight, quite the powerful one at that. but he couldn't find anything about it. so when he went back to you he asked about it.
and when he found out....maybe justice can be overlooked this one time. but that truly did surprise him. i mean you. short, sweet and absolutely caring. huh. and you got away with it without anyone even solving your case.
eventually he just grew proud of it, didn't tell anyone but in this one case of him overlooking true justice for the person he loved, it gave him a weird sense of pride.

Your Umbrella (Dazai x Reader)
Tumblr media
I love him. My baby, my love, my sunshine is safe and happy in my bed.
Wrote this before watching today's new episode! This feels rushed because I was too excited for the new episode to wait to write it out. Sorry babes, Dazai is my top priority.
Post episode Mars: I giggled and kicked my feet like a little girl! That was some gay shit, but HELLO DAZAI IS ALIVE! My babyboo ahh.
(Also did you guys see the chapter236 JJK leaks?! I shall write for Gojo...I'm coping)
Writing is how I cope.
In which we talk with Dazai while we both overlook the setting sun (see what I did there hehe)
Bye now - Mars ♡
Tumblr media
Together on a bench, onlooking the sunset, you and Dazai sat in silent. The rays of the warm sunlight pleasant on your skin and face. The clouds, a pretty colour of orange and yellow. The blue contrast of the sky blended nicely.
“Why are you a detective?” you asked Dazai, you were in a sulky mood today, you felt… drifty, for lack of a better word. It was one of those days where you wake up and question your existence. Why were you you? Why did you want to do this job? Why did your life turn this way?
Dazai shifted his gaze to you, his eyes looking at yours. He let out a silent sigh before giving you a smug smile.
“Don’t I look like I belong here? Plus it’s quite interesting” He looked up at the pretty clouds and then muttered under his breath, “This job comes naturally to me”
“Brushing my teeth comes naturally to me but that’s because I’ve done it a million times” you stated, and you heard him chuckle.
“I suggest you don’t compare your little daily routine to my life darling” he snorted, eyes still on the sunset.
“Do you take pride in your job?”, you continued to probe. Your mind was curious, but your heart wasn’t. Your heart feared triggering him and making him angry, a product of your own troubled past. But you knew Dazai, you wanted to believe you did, and he wouldn’t snap like that. He was too much of an unserious person. But what if?
Dazai gave a small nod, confirming your assumption. He turns to look at you, “it’s because of my job that I’ve been able to accomplish many things” his smile smug, “Impressive, yes? Heh.”
“Many things like?” You seem to not take the hint to not go further but you couldn’t stop yourself.
“Handling guns” he jokes and you chuckle, it wasn’t even funny. His voice just made everything sound giddy.
“Have you accomplished happiness?” you tilt your head and look back at him.
Dazai freezes up but quickly basks it with a little laugh and turns backed to face the sun. A desperate attempt to avoid your eyes. “Do I look unhappy?” he muses, his voice teasing.
“I’d rather not judge a book by its cover. You tell me.”
Dazai laughs, “What a curious thing you are, asking me such a thing” he smiles, it’s not pretty you think.
“Should I be irritated by your little question or find it funny how straightforward you are” He asks you with a little smirk. When you don’t answer and just stare at him, he adds “Happiness had abandoned me, I’ll say, a very long time ago.”
Abandonment? Was this the closest Dazai will ever allow you to be? Desperate and lovesick, you grabble at any piece of crumbs he gives. It’s pathetic. You attempt to keep your cool, but you’re sure he knows how you really feel. He seems to always know everything.
“Doesn’t that contradict the philosophy ‘Happiness is found inside of us’?”
Dazai glances at you for a moment, then back to the sun, he let out a small hum of interest. You really had a way of surprising him, not that he’d ever let you know that.
“I suppose so, however the happiness I’m searching for cannot be reached. I assure you that.”
You stole a glance at his face, he seems to be reminiscing on something. Or maybe that was just another façade to lead you astray from his true feelings.
“Why not?”
With a bit of hesitation, he smiles, eyes bright. A change that catches you off guard, Dazai shifts closer to you. The edge of his trench coat brushing up against your pants. He lowers his voice several octaves, almost in a forbidden whisper, “Because I am searching for one thing that cannot be obtained.”
Your eyebrows shot up, “And what’s that? Dinosaurs?”, a futile attempt to lighten up the conversation. You wanted so badly a shred of him, the real him, but now that you think you’re getting it, you’re not sure. You’re running away.
Dazai laughs amused by your response, the corners of his eyes crinkling up as he closes them, letting the laughter overtake him. “Good observation, but no” he clicks his tongue playfully, “To put it simply. I am searching for one thing to fill…” he sighs out and shakes his head a little.
“Ah” he giggles, “I’m not sure what I’m searching for” he deflects. He doesn’t know if he should share, if he could bare to say it out loud. Because to say it out loud would mean to admit it. To acknowledge it.
Bullshit. You knew it was a lie. He was a liar. Damn your heart for falling for him.
Looks at him, “It’s okay” you said with a sigh, “I’m searching for myself in a way,” you decided to turn the conversation on you to avoid going to go down the road of awkwardness.
“The thing…I’m searching for doesn’t exist, love doesn’t exist.” He sounded like he was in pain. Like it pained him to say that. To tell you that. You find yourself feeling guilty, did you pressure him?
“Love isn’t limited, so again, why?” you continue.
Once again for the multiple time, Dazai laughs “Curious little thing indeed” he turns to look at you, “Think you have a chance, Bella?”
You find your face heating up and keeps your eye on the sun to avoid his gaze.
“Do you think you could meet my standards? They’re quite high” he teases and once again you think he’s deflecting. A big distraction to avert your eyes from peering at him.
He holds his head up high, his gaze on you unwavering. You aren’t looking at him, but the intensity of his eyes pins you to this old bench.
“Are they high to protect your heart?” you blurt you before you even knew what you were saying. “Sorry!” you instantly apologize.
Dazai was surprised by your statement, yes that was exactly what it was. He stayed silent for a moment, contemplating your words. “Perhaps,” he sighs, shall I take a chance? He questions himself, a battle between his brain. “I have set out expectations that I’m even unsure about myself.” He spoke and then stayed silent. He waited for your next words. His heart was pounding yet his face had a smug smile.
“Expectations are like umbrellas, they stop rain and sun from reaching us” you state, and then laughs.
“Indeed, but what’s your point?”
“Rain is like pain, yes your umbrella, your walls, protect you from it” you cross a leg over the next, eyes drinking in the sunlight. “But you miss out on the warm sun too.”
Dazai ponders to himself for a moment. It appears you’ve managed to grasp a greater sense of him. Did he underestimate you? No, he wouldn’t be so careless. “Quite the profound analogy you have there, it’s fascinating.” He smiles at you, “How did you come to this conclusion, might I ask?”
“You know, I like sun especially in the mornings and evenings, it’s like a warm hug” you fiddle with your shirt, “but I also like rain, though sometimes storms are too harsh for my umbrella.”
Dazai observed you for a while, the silence between you two comfortable. He noticed the light pink tinting your cheeks and the way you avoided his eyes. You had intrigued him, maybe he truly had a soft spot for you.
The silence was not comfortable for you, did you overstep? Did he find your analogy dumb? Your mouth acted on its own, “I always use my umbrella” you stated, “But one harsh storm broke it, and I was drenched with a skeleton of an umbrella” your eyes have this faraway look, he notes.
“And then the sun hit me and I wasn’t ready and I was scared” you breathe out, closing your eyes. Dazai thinks the sight is better than the setting sun, “But it dried up my wet clothes and wet skin and wet hair. It felt warm and…yellow” you laugh softly, “yellow is such a beautiful colour, yes?”
He hums, “Are you saying that you decided to get rid of your protection and walk and bask in the sunlight that you so adore” his voice is light and teasing. His eyes laser focused on you as if you’d burst open and come up with a new revelation.
“Yes, sun being metaphor for love. Rain for pain, umbrella for protective walls and wet for I guess, depression?” you break down your words, trying to make him understand. He already understands, he just loves your voice so much.
“To translate from my understanding, you’re saying you choose love regardless of the costs?” you nod.
“You fascinate me,” he admits boldly, “Do you have someone in mind?”
“Someone in mind?”
“For love, the person you choose will be a caliber of that, do you?” He shifts his eyes to the clouds. A blissful sight.
“When I say sun is love I don’t speak of lovers. I would say I’m my own sun. A lover would be a mirror, reflecting to me how bright my own sun shines.” Your lips presses together into a thin line.
“A mirror, I see” he chuckles. “Oh, you curious little thing” he smiles.
“Then can we test this?”
“Test what?”
“Let go of your umbrella and let me be your mirror,” he takes a hold of your hand, “Belladonna,”
“Osamu”
His heart stops when you whisper his given name. It sounded so beautiful falling from your lips. “Say it again” he leans in and connects your lips together.

There is something so good about Akutagawa--a very much feared, boogeyman like figure (even amongst his own men) in Yokohama because of his violence, bloodlust, and steadfast loyalty to a violent criminal organization such as the Port Mafia--given biblical angel symbolism
I don't know, something something about someone whose beauty is so incomprehensible and terrifying to most. He's not physically ugly, he's not--he's beautiful, the type of beautiful that almost feel as if he's not a real person, like he's a mirage, or a painting. But he's beautiful not like those renaissance cherubs and lovely looking maidens for angels, but more like the biblical angels with their beauty beyond mortal grasp, the beauty that brings fear and revulsion towards whoever sees them because they cannot comprehend it. Coming across him makes you understand why angels say, "Be not afraid" when they reveal themselves to mortals. An incomprehensible beauty that very few can keep looking at. A dangerous feat, literally and metaphorically.
(This isn't only with his physical appearance either--for someone who is constantly beaten down both by canon and by the fandom for being "simple", he is a terrifying bundle of different aspects that contradict each other. Like a super machine you open up and you see the intricate criss crossing of wires and bolts that hold it together. He's a mess of nerves and feelings and experiences so profound, so horrific, that you don't know where to start with him. To uncoil him and see him truly bare is almost impossible. Where does he end and the roots that connect him to the earth begin?)
Something about Akutagawa being an angel, a being created entirely to follow the will of "God", obey their every word. Unwavering loyalty to their master while singing praise. Acting entirely on the order of their master--wing always dipped in blood for his sake. A weapon of "heaven' that brings destruction to those who oppose "God" and be one of the many upon which "God" rests upon.
(Almost everything Akutagawa does is for the sake of the Port Mafia, taking orders from the "master" (boss) himself. Willingness and obedience and loyalty repeatedly exploited and used, everything he has done as one of the high ranking leaders handling most of the Mafia's dirty work playing a part so Mori's throne stays high.)
Something about comparing Akutagawa to a certain archangel, finding repulsion in "God"'s cherished creation, the inferiority that came with being "less" to "mankind", and the painful fall from grace to the deepest pits of despair when he confronts the being that created him, molded him, and then condemn him. And to his humiliation, mankind, for centuries, condemns him too.
(He can't be compared to Lucifer, God's most beloved angel. Maybe Dazai did value him, but it doesn't matter, does it? because the difference between the two is that one was cherished and one never was. However, you can compare the rage and humiliation Akutagawa felt towards Atsushi--for obtaining Dazai's approval and affection with no effort, no proper control over his skill or any seemingly differentiating quality-- to Lucifer's refusal to bow down to humanity--a creation inherently imperfect and lackluster, with not the qualities of angels. And as a result? Disgraced. Both by the creator and by ones that held their creator's favor. )
Something about Akutagawa being an angel--someone whose presence means nothing pleasant to those he appears before. A reaper of sorts, responsible for taking life and for souls to see the afterlife (killing both as an order and an act of mercy, for he despises torture and meaningless suffering). A guardian angel watching over "mankind" from afar, where he is not aware and saving him from certain death at his own expense.
There's just something so appealing about depicting Akutagawa--a fearsome, ruthless, and bloodthirsty mafioso, a boogeyman to his own men--as an angel, be it of death, of mercy, a destroying angel-- whatever anyone wants to see him as and use him for.

The cool thing about skk to me is that despite me joking most of the time when I say there is no way to read them as "just enemies" or "just friends" its actually true. Out of all the relationships in bsd, all of them can be clearly labelled as something and you get a pretty good picture of what their dynamic would be. Like with sskk you can say enemies to best friends and it would be right because they did start out as legit enemies who are growing to trust and care for each other and it's a lot more clearly defined where they stand with each other in universe even if Atsushi doesn't quite understand it. Aku cares about him whatever way you want to see it in he has grown to care about him. You can define what Fukumori and fukfuku are, you can even define what rimlaine were even if that is by virtue of us already knowing that they were based on a real couple. And even with Dazai you can clearly define his relationship with Kunikida (work partners and friends), Oda (dearest friend), Ango (close friend that he has some animosity towards but really still cares for him).
But you can't quite place skk in a neat little box because they don't make it clear. Their words constantly contradict their actions when it comes to each other. They have each other in their dislikes but they are both weirdly obsessive about each other. They understand each other to a ridiculous extent, they trust each other way too much, they have more faith in the other's humanity than in their own. They act like vitriolic best friends but claim to despise each other. And I have honestly not seen Dazai be this physically affectionate with anyone. Even their descriptor for each other is simply "partner" which is such an ambiguous term cause it can mean anything from work partners, partner in crime, romantic partner (based on rimlaine's whole partner situation considering their whole...thing) and so on. And it doesn't help that aside from Chuuya once, nobody actually acknowledges that their partnership ever ended, including Fyodor. Even Dazai refuses to use the word ex.
I used to wonder how Chuuya's friendships and relationship would play out in contrast but with 15 and sb it's clear that Chuuya does struggle to fully warm up to people and tends to be more reserved with his affection, so his dynamic with Dazai post sc makes a lot of sense.
The only other dynamic in canon with this much ambiguity is Fyolai but there at least you have some attempt at explaining Nikolai's side of things. For how in your face skk's closeness is we don't actually know what their deal actually is outside of some kind of intense friendship .
Is this just my long and convoluted way of saying I really wanna know what happened between stormbringer and dragon head as well as before dark era? Yes. This isn't particularly in any sense supposed to push some romantic dynamic on them, all I'm saying is their dynamic is such an enigma.

I saw this one post and it was like, dazai and chuuya only understand each other on the battle field (that wasn’t the main topic of the post, just something that Was there. The topic was if dazai considers anyone else a friend like he did oda)
And well, I just. Disagree? What are your guys thoughts on that? (ALSO… I MIGJT BE GETTING STORM BRINHER WITJIN THE NEXT WEEK OR SO!!! IF IM LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!! AUGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!)
I 100% disagree with that take. Their relationship is so much more than how they fight together, that's the point of Soukoku, that they make each other better.
Chuuya was the only character in Fifteen to acknowledge Dazai as a child first and a threat second. Dazai was potentially the first person to give Chuuya a direct choice in 8 years. Their conflict comes from the fact that they do understand each other, they just disagree with the other's methods.
Of course, their relationship was partly forged on the battlefield, as was Zenki Soukoku's and as is Shin Soukoku's, because this is a world at war, but that doesn't mean that's where their relationship starts and ends, there's so much in BSD that contradicts that.

Ngl sometimes I feel like Asagiri doesn't know what he's writing. Like in many many interviews I feel like he straight up contradicts what him and harukawa are doing in the manga which often just makes me go ????
Like the way he treats Akutagawa has never been framed in a positive light, he has shown how desperate akutagawa was for his recognition. The cycle of abuse is a constant theme in the manga...
That interview just baffled me so much that I can't help but wonder if asagiri just really sucks at expressing himself or idk because I also feel like if some sentences would've been slightly changed it would've fallen more in line with the manga and it wouldn't have sounded like excusing the abuse Dazai had put Akutagawa through.
... I honestly don't know how to answer to this. I sincerely don't think the author's words contradict what already slipped through the manga? As I said, I think the statement was just a very unfortunate case of intersection between 1) abuse apologism and 2) Dazai idolization... But that's both things bsd ALWAYS had.
Chapter 39 Portrait of a Father is right there; the author's framing of Akutagawa and Dazai's relationship in the interview is precisely the same case of “the abuse you went through actually shaped you to become a better person, and your abuser always acted in your best interests and should even be regarded highly by you, like a father / meaning to your life”. So, nothing new on that front. About Dazai, I guess that's harder to pinpoint, but I do believe bsd has a bad case of Dazai is omniscient / perfect / flawless / can-do-no-wrong syndrome, something someone already made a very interesting elaboration of here. That explains why the author could never admit that Akutagawa was Dazai's failure, because that would be admitting Dazai can fail, and it's evident that the author doesn't agree with that.
I'm not really sure Dazai's treatment of Akutagawa is portrayed as cruel, either. Like, if it was, then why didn't Dazai stop treating Akutagawa that way when he joined the ada and started doing good? That sounds like implying that Dazai didn't stop because he is doing Akutagawa's good. When you think about it, Dazai acts very coldly to Akutagawa in chapters 36 and 51, treating him with condescension and vague contempt; and yet, those scenes are framed as being either endearing or comic, never cruel. Overall, I can hardly find the interview to be inconsistent to the manga when it's basically just expanding on what Akutagawa already told us here:
Tumblr media
and where in the past one could have suspected this was only Akutagawa's biased perspective¹, this new interview simply confirms the author thinks it the same way too.
¹ I'll never forget my sister saying, when I was live reacting chapters 84-88 to her, about this exact passage: “That depressingly sounds like an abused person trying to find a meaning in the pain the abuse caused them, something able to give a sense to the pain and excuse the abuser”
I was extremely surprised by how everyone reacted to the interview, because I found it saddening, yes, but people are acting like it's something new and surprising when... I really don't feel the same way? I always thought bsd was full of problematic stuff and fucked up worldviews I don't agree with, from the moment I was watching the first season for the first time. And like, it kind of sucked initially, but I came to terms with it because there's other aspects I find enjoyable to explore and dwell into! (And also simply because I don't get to pick what I hyperfixate on). Personally, I assumed that people in the fandom either agreed with the author, or turned a more or less conscious blind eye to its issues in favor of more compelling stuff, or did like me and acknowledged its problematic stuff while also believing that doesn't necessarily have to get in the way of your enjoyment of the media (we're all just here to have fun). But I never thought... People just didn't notice? Like, the author's world views are all there and they've always been there, what changed exactly? Again, seeing it put so plainly and with no shame is saddening, but can't be deemed surprising. Yet somehow I've seriously seen people say stuff that sounded worryingly like “the abuse defending manga author is defending abuse in real life, how did this happen” and I'm. ?????????¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿????????? I'm sorry, and forgive me if I'm sounding somehow pretentious, but I swear most sincerely that I just don't get it. When in two years the author is going to make a comment of the kind “no female character will ever be as complex as male characters because women simply don't have it in them”, will everyone suddenly be surprised because the author of the sexist manga revealed themselves to be sexist?
It's just... As someone who as it turns out has done this (deeply disagreeing with bsd's themes, but hyperfixated on it nonetheless) longer, very humbly, allow me some words of advice: you're here for entertainment, you're here to have fun. That means you get to decide what parts of canon are worth focusing on and dissect and enjoy, and that doesn't in any way hold you from acknowledging bsd's problems when they're at and overall having a critical approach to reading the manga. I think that's a good advice for interacting with all kinds of media actually! In the words of another old answer of mine:
I don't know who needs to hear this, but someone definitely does: “I love s/kk!!” “the bsd storytelling has many compelling aspects!!” and “I recognize the bsd writing has flaws some of which actively harm an already disadvantaged part of society” are statements that can and should coexist, and if anything - and I know you hate to hear this, I'm sorry, I'm sorry - it should be kept in mind when deciding to support the franchise by buying its products.
And lastly, but most importantly: bsd stopped giving you joy? Walk out!!! The world is full of beautiful stories. Read The Promised Neverland.

Here is my thread from twitter i wrote about my theory about Fyodor’s ability not working on ability users. I wanted to get this posted here before we learn even more about it than in the next chapter probably lol I’m probably wrong given how old Fyodor is there’s probably plenty we don’t know and haven’t seen yet. But I still think this is interesting to talk about :) (Also I had more images to add but I will have to wait till i have access to my PC to add more cause the mobile app won’t let me)
So what if Fyodor can’t use his ability on ability users? We haven’t really seen him use it on other gifted, we’ve seen him shoot/manipulate gifted but not use Crime & Punishment on them.
People he did use it on were normal people and the people who have touched him & lived are all ability users.
Tumblr media
If Fyodor has used C&P on an ability user, please let me know but I can’t find a particular instance he does.
Either way, his ability is probably something he either is consciously controlling or the ability itself is selective in some way with normal people because this kid touches him with a cloth.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile this agent has gloves on but Fyodor still kills him with C&P. So, clothes/cloth isn’t the difference on its own.
Like i said, it’s gotta either be he *does* have control in some capacity or Crime & Punishment is selective on its own, regardless if it affects gifted or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But even if it is selective or controlled why never use it on the gifted?
The people he claims to want gone the most? It would also make sense why he really wants the book to write ability users out of the world. If his ability doesn’t work on them, maybe that’s why he see them as sinners.
If Fyodor has an ability he believes is a blessing or something that’s “holy”, something bestowed upon him by god then him believing ability users are sin/sinners because that “holy” ability doesn’t work on them could make sense. It’s why he wants the book to completely erase them.
But also, a different extension of this is maybe Fyodor views the book as holy because of its power. Maybe someone say, stole the book to create ability users. Fyodor would want to correct that “sin”. And maybe his ability doesn’t work on anything made by the book, thus why it doesn’t work on ability users.
But that aside, either explanation could also explain Fyodor’s fascination with Dazai (aside with his intellect), Dazai’s a walking contradiction.
The ability user who cannot be unaffected by abilities. Fyodor may even see it as Dazai can’t be touched by their “sin” and maybe is tied to the book in some way. Of course such a thing would grab his attention.
Tumblr media
It could also explain Fyodor’s reverence for Sigma, a being created by the book. He seems to hold the book in high regard & even Ranpo himself says the book was created by smth “greater”.
If Fyodor sees the book as a tool from god, he would think highly Sigma being born from it. Similar in the way he may view Dazai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t believe Fyodor did anything to Sigma. (Addition to this repost: I still believe this. I still think it’s just information overload. That’s why he’s not waking up with skk. We were told about this for a reason and given Fyodor is old af it makes sense he as SO MUCH information to go through)
As Ango explained, you can pass out from too much information & Atsushi passed out from a small amount.
Sigma requested to know *everything*. I think Fyodor knew what he knows would fry Sigma’s brain. That said, I think Sigma will wake up.
(Again, addition to this repost: now that we know it’s like hundreds of years of information of course that would be hard for his brian to process)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I will add to this next bit because we have more information from chapter 113.)
Whatever Sigma learned, he knew he had to tell the agency right away. He obviously knows more than just how Fyodor’s ability works but i’m sure he thinks the agency needs to know something *specific* he learned about Fyodor and/or his plans & ability.
(Addition: It’s interesting Sigma said this given he’s only *just now* going through Fyodor’s memories and seeing how old actually Fyodor is. I wonder if that is what he wants to tell them or if it’s *how* Fyodor is so old that he feels must be shared with the agency. I feel it’s definitely Sigma wants to tell them that he knows *how* Fyodor is that old. As he says “I know *what* Dostoyevsky really is. Not who, *what* he is. Interesting.)
Tumblr media
Back to the main point, assuming his ability wasn’t used on Sigma (it wasn’t), Fyodor hasn’t used his ability to kill ability users.
He shot Dazai’s accomplice, he “shot” Katai as well. He manipulated Ace into killing himself. He wanted these people dead, why not use his ability?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chuuya & Nikolai touched him without anything happening. Of course like I said, Fyodor can either control his ability or it’s selective on its own. So he could’ve chosen *not* to use it on Chuuya & Nikolai or for some reason his ability just didn’t care about them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But still, why hasn’t he used it on other gifted? Like the first 3 i listed, he wanted dead right? He also choses to manipulate gifted like Mushitaro or mutilates them like Ivan & we’re not sure if he touched them or not. If he himself did the surgery on Ivan he had to have touched him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even with Shibusawa, Fyodor cuts his throat. He doesn’t try to use crime & punishment. Of course, Shibusawa was “dead” already so it could be a different case.
He also never went up against Natsume directly in untold origins, although in the novel Fyodor is only eluded to and we never see. But maybe Natsume is “that man” Fyodor refers to. (Though now it could be Bram given 113?).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You could also throw in Fyodor stabbing Mori instead of using his ability on him in there. But in this case Fyodor’s objective was to pit the ADA & PM against each other so they would take each other out. Though there’s an argument he still could have done that & kill Mori here.
Tumblr media
But let’s just assume he didn’t want Mori dead because of his plan to pit the two organizations against each other. So, I won’t touch more on Mori other than he must’ve touched Mori when he stabbed him, but since Fyodor seems to have some control over C&P let’s also say he just didn’t activate it here.
No one knows how Fyodor’s ability works aside Fyodor himself (Sigma might know now, we’ll probably know in a chapter coming up).
Even Dazai, which is why Dazai hasn’t wanted to give him the opportunity to touch him. He’s see what we have, people touching him & dying. So until Dazai knows for sure how his ability works, why risk touching him.
That’s why Dazai was hoping Sigma would help (assuming we believe Dazai when he says he doesn’t know how Fyodor’s ability works).
Sigma should now know both Fyodor’s plans & his ability & i’m sure he’s going to wake up and tell skk. Then Dazai will know.
Tumblr media
But what if Fyodor was secretive about his ability because it doesn’t actually work against gifted? He wants ability users gone & it only benefits him for people to believe he can kill anyone with a touch. So why wouldn’t he play into that assumption?
We also haven’t seen too much of his interaction with other DOA members (Addition: aside we now know Fyodor and Bram go way back and Bram may even know more about Fyodor's ability, but he might not). We've only seen Nikolai & Sigma & we only see Sigma touch him once, to get information & Nikolai holding his hands. Nikolai admitted he doesn’t know about Fyodor’s ability either, hence saving Sigma to help.
Tumblr media
I believe Fyodor would want to use his ability on gifted if he could, like Ace or Katai etc. People he knew he wanted dead and wouldn’t serve another purpose. But he doesn’t seem to use it. (Again if we have seen him somewhere use it on an ability user please let me know). But since he doesn’t seem to use it on gifted, maybe he just *can’t*.
He could just be choosing not to for all those instances for one reason or another & it does work on gifted and we just haven’t seen it yet. We just don’t really know but I’m sure we will soon.
This is just a fun theory, one that will probably be proven wrong to be honest haha so take it as you will. Everyone has their own interpretations and we will find out in canon soon enough.

Chuuya tending to Dazai in Meursault (Dazai's POV)
tags: soukoku's version of fluff
tw: suicidal ideation, bullet wound, blood
Despite the gnawing, constant craving for death, Dazai found himself grateful to be alive.
Phantom pain from the bullets that barely grazed his skin had him rubbing at his forehead, his abdomen, a feeble attempt at ignoring the hole in his shoulder, the break in his leg. He tried to sit up, tried to push himself up to lean against the wall, but his head was swimming with blood loss and fluorescent lighting, and every small movement was hell.
Chuuya had really done a number on him.
Chuuya had also saved his life.
If Chuuya hadn't shown up when he did, hadn't saved Dazai in that elevator shaft and alerted him to the fact that he was here and he was alive and he was not, in fact, a vampire, then Dazai would be dead, would have fallen to his death. Would have finally gotten what he wanted.
Is that what he wanted? It wouldn't have been suicide. Just dumb luck.
Still.
"You sleeping?" came Chuuya's voice, his usual edge of annoyance pulling Dazai from his trance. He'd just returned from the medical bay holding some sort of case.
Dazai looked up at him from where he lay on the ground, blinking a few times, focusing and refocusing his eyes. "Just taking in the view."
"I swear to god," Chuuya said, pointing at Dazai, "if you laugh, I'm locking your broken ass back up myself."
Dazai smirked. "Is that a promise?"
Chuuya frowned, and it took all of Dazai's will to not laugh at the sight. His eyes were still tinted red, fangs poking out just beneath his lip, and it would be kind of hot if it wasn't so pathetic.
"I'm leaving you here," Chuuya threatened, actions contradicting his words as he knelt on the floor and set the case down, grabbing Dazai's good shoulder and hoisting him up into a seated position.
Dazai grunted at the movement, plopping his head against the wall as he focused on breathing. "No you won't." He looked at Chuuya, panting. "You'd miss me too much."
Chuuya rolled his eyes. Or at least, it looked like Chuuya rolled his eyes. It was hard to tell behind the contacts. "Just shut up and let me look at you."
"Why Chuuya, there are cameras-"
"I said shut the fuck up, Dazai," Chuuya interrupted, forcing Dazai's hands above his head.
A sharp pain shot through his shoulder as Chuuya tugged the soiled shirt up and over Dazai's head, tossing it aside. He let his arms fall.
Chuuya pulled off his gloves, tucking them into the pocket of his jacket, eyeing the bullet wound in Dazai's shoulder. He opened the case and pulled out an alcohol wipe, tearing it open.
"I know you shot me in the shoulder to make it more believable," Dazai stated, "but you didn't have to keep shooting."
Chuuya ran the wipe across Dazai's skin, cleaning some of the blood wherever he could find it. It was weirdly calming, the word gentle never something that Dazai would have thought he'd ever associate with Chuuya, but in that moment, Chuuya was being gentle with him.
Chuuya must've caught on because it was then that he ran the wipe across the wound, the alcohol strong enough to make Dazai hiss.
That was the Chuuya Dazai knew.
"I stopped all the other bullets, didn't I?" Chuuya sat back, dropping the wipe and pulling some gauze and a bandage roll from the case. "Fyodor thought I was a bloodthirsty vampire. It made sense."
"It felt good, didn't it?" Dazai pried, watching Chuuya work.
Chuuya paused for a moment before placing the gauze over Dazai's shoulder. He began to wrap it with the bandage. "Damn right it did."
Dazai smiled at that. "Guess I deserved it a little."
Chuuya huffed, maneuvering the bandage around Dazai's shoulder until it was completely covering the wound.
"Or maybe Chuuya just wanted an excuse to see me shirtless," he added.
Chuuya slapped his wound.
"Ow!" Dazai grabbed at his shoulder. "Violent little slug."
Before he could say anything else, he caught sight of Chuuya's face. His cheeks were red.
Oh.
Dazai grinned. "Like what you see?"
"Fuck off."
"It's okay, Chuuya, this is a safe space."
Chuuya pulled a brace out of the case. "Do you want me to put this on your leg or not?"
Oh. Chuuya brought him a brace.
That was... thoughtful.
"It's either that or you're carrying me out of here, so take your pick," Dazai teased.
"In your dreams, mackerel."
He loved when Chuuya fought back.
It just made Dazai want to fight harder.
"Yes, it is."
Chuuya's cheeks went red again.
The only thing Dazai loved more than seeing Chuuya all worked up is knowing that he was the one who caused it.
"I'm gonna shoot you in the head for real next time," he spat, moving to kneel next to Dazai's broken leg. He lightly held Dazai's bare ankle, lifting it up and sliding the brace beneath his calf.
Again, with the gentleness.
Chuuya was really giving him mixed signals here.
"And what fun would that- fuck," Dazai choked, gritting his teeth as Chuuya worked at the brace. "Dammit, Chuuya, that fucking hurts."
"Thought we were having fun," said Chuuya, the corner of his lip curling up as he tightened the brace, securing it in place.
Dazai smirked through the pain. "You call that vampire impression fun?"
"Choose your next words carefully, asshole," Chuuya warned. "There's still time for me to shoot you again."
And Dazai...well, Dazai was tired. Exhausted, actually. So for once in his goddamn life, he kept a thought to himself.
He'd tease Chuuya about his vampire screech another day.

What *are* your more-specific thoughts about what might've happened with regards to Dazai before Mori met him/Dazai and the old boss? Your tags in that timeline post intrigued me.
Oh, thank you! And hello!
Hmm, well I'll say one thing straight up: I don't have much in the way of specifics. I'm the kind of person who finds it really difficult to make theories in the absence of hard evidence (I've gotten that beaten into my skull from my time in the sciences haha...).
Having said that, there are three ideas I have about Dazai's life before meeting Mori: one which is more headcanon than anything but that I believe at least partially resolves some of the contradictions I mentioned earlier and two which are vague but I really think have to be true.
#1: Dazai is the son of wealthy mafia benefactors who was later taken in by the old boss.
This is the more headcanon-y one but it makes a degree of sense to me. If Dazai was the child of the old boss then he would've been involved more directly in mafia business but he wasn't. Fifteen implies he wasn't even around death all that much, which is likely why the old boss's death provoked such a darkening of his eye and why he thanked the GSS soldier for allowing him to witness his death. If he was the child of benefactors, he may have met the old boss and some of the higher ups, and they might've known who he was - he'd be someone relatively trustworthy without any direct relation. Also, if his family were wealthy and mafia-affiliated, they would have had to engage in those kinds of high-class social connection games - you know, gracious manipulation, get the right people on your side, never let people see you without a smile, that sort of thing. Dazai, at age 15, was already capable of this. He didn't learn it from Mori; Mori just honed what was already there. It would be interesting as well if something happened to his family, leaving Dazai to wander alone for a bit before getting picked up by the old boss, who maybe recognized him. Then, as the old boss succumbed further to his paranoia, he might've lashed out at him, he might've been behaviourally unpredictable, he might've decided young Dazai was the only one he could trust... it's hard to say. No matter what happened between them, there must've been some fondness - Dazai is notably more wary than angry or scared when the old boss attacks him in the fight against Rimbaud and then there's what Hirotsu said about Dazai understanding what Mori did - but also something happened between them or adjacent to them to make Dazai slip further into despair, enough that he tried to die multiple times.
#2: Dazai's ability and suicide attempts were triggered by a constant and inescapable lack of control.
Ok, so I don't have a lot of specifics for this one but I really think it must be true by necessity of his characterization. It's implied that abilities have triggers, which is interesting because it ties into that "abilities are trauma responses" theory I've seen around. For Dazai's to negate abilities - a defensive skill that negates often unfair advantages - it really makes me believe that he developed it because he had no power. Maybe there were lots of skill users around him. Maybe they hurt him and he couldn't get away. This is all hypothetical but the point is that constant and inescapable pain leads to what's called learned helplessness.
Learned helplessness is a behaviour that occurs when an individual is repeatedly subjected to something harsh or unpleasant with no means of making it stop - they have no control over when and how long they will be harmed. Eventually, even if you give them an out, they likely won't take it, because they have internalized the belief of "why bother? i can't control what happens to me anyways." It's one of the underpinnings of major depression and c-PTSD.
I find it very interesting that Dazai apparently took no action of his own asides from trying to end his own life until Mori showed up and gave him an out - perhaps that's part of the reason Dazai remained loyal to Mori until he chose to sacrifice Odasaku. I heavily believe Mori, like always, was the preferable alternative to an already horrible situation. I've commented before on how Dazai is not proactive and has to be pushed into doing things. Much of the time, he doesn't seem to see a point to it. Either that, or he's actually got the whole situation under his control already, which ties into the main reason I think he came from this kind of powerless background - he's a huge control freak.
It starts with Mori. Dazai realizes he can threaten Mori into being afraid of him and it works. Then he tries to control Chuuya. That didn't go so well. Very annoying. Also a little bit threatening to him. He continues to try and one-up the guy. He did manage to manipulate the Sheep and then scare other members of the Mafia into fearing him. Good. He is in control. Then he honed his mind under Mori, so that he's always a step ahead. What's more, he already knew how to slap on a smile so everyone thinks he knows more than them even when he might not. He maintains this underlying control not just in his mafia days but also with the agency, which is, in my opinion, one of his major flaws that holds him back from developing as a person.
Thing is, if Dazai just liked feeling superior to others, I would expect his reaction towards being waylaid to be more anger-based. Sure, he can get irritated, but what we typically see more prominently is actually a flash of shock, desperation or fear - think of the Q chapter (shouting and racing back to intercept Atsushi as quickly as he could), 55 Minutes (his shocked and uncoordinated attempt to lash out after being stabbed), Fifteen (his expression at finding out Arahabaki's identity) - before he schools himself back under control. It comes across less as a desire for control and more of a pathological need for it - I wouldn't expect to see this reaction in someone who had control when they were younger.
As an addendum, it's also good to note that Dazai seems to be disgusted and feel more hatred (actually rare to see open expressions of these from him) for people who control others in some way - Fyodor, Q. Moreover, his respect for Chuuya, someone who similarly comes from a background of a lack of personal agency, is to openly offer him a choice in the form of a question. It's more than just performative; he really did try to come up with backup plans so that if Chuuya legitimately wanted an out, he could have it. When you draw the through lines, I think this makes sense.
#3: Dazai was an emotionally neglected child.
Alright, this is the last one and I'll try to be more brief about it. I mentioned that Dazai had to have picked up his ability to read the room and "sweet-talk" people into telling him things long before he met Mori, but I should also note that genuine matters of the heart seem to be incredibly foreign to him - as an example, his inability to understand how Rimbaud's concern for his partner could be such a powerful motivator for his actions. The answer to this is, of course, that one is fake niceties and the other is real connection. Dazai, being hyper-intelligent, likely picked up on social fakery from a young age but did not have the offset of real concern for his feelings or well-being as a necessary balance. It's interesting because Dazai is actually very skilled at picking up on other's feelings and dispositions even if he doesn't necessarily get it - his blind spot is actually his own feelings and how other people relate to him.
Emotional neglect is characterized by the absence of caregiver interactions in nurture, connection and response to distress. The caregiver consistently responds to the child's emotions by ignoring, dismissing or demeaning them, which leads the child to withdraw and believe their feelings are wrong and unimportant. They often struggle with relationships because they feel chronically disconnected, isolated and misunderstood.
Signs and symptoms of neglect include:
Low self-esteem
Odd emotional responses and poor regulation
An inability to ask for or accept support from others
A lack of language for describing feelings
Dissociation and "shutting-down" (lack of emotional responsivity)
Distrust of others
Persistent feelings of loneliness, guilt, and shame
Purposeful sabotaging of relationships in order to avoid rejection and hurt
It is also highly associated with anxiety, dissociative disorders, depressive disorders and c-PTSD. Um. Yeah. I don't think I really need to explain too much here.
Whenever Dazai attempts to be more sincere, it typically comes out kind of awkward. He stumbles over his offer to Rimbaud of fulfilling any last wishes or favours as he lays dying in Fifteen, awkwardly asks if him and Odasaku will meet again in Day I Picked Up Dazai, and hesitates trying to find the right words to reveal the truth to Chuuya about the resetting of his code on activation of Corruption in Stormbringer. It's like he has no frame of reference for how he should act or feel. In these cases, it legitimately comes across as him just not knowing.
More than that, Dazai is very... clingy. Like. When he gets to know someone he needs to invade their space. He needs so much attention. He pokes and prods at Chuuya incessantly. He rambles away to and is always in Oda and Ango's personal space. He annoys Kunikida to no end and is ridiculously happy when the man snaps and attacks him. Pops up behind Atsushi and generally gets in his space. Needs to cause some ruckus daily and have people react to it. Yeah. It's comedic in the context of the series but also... you know... you know.
In summary, I like theories that focus on Dazai as a human being with trauma. While I've seen some cool ones that wonder if he is not human or if he's connected to The Book, they don't sit right with me since I think his arc is all about realizing he is, in fact, human, and the ways in which trauma can mess you up and make you feel like an alien or a ghost or something inhumanly monstrous when you are not.
Dazai's consistent failures to live up to his own and others' standards of humanity become a lot more meaningful to me when he is... just a very screwed up guy who happens to be smart. Get what I mean?
Besides, The Book is already connected to a character here and that character is Atsushi!
I was not more brief about this... Oh well. Those are my thoughts. If you guys had the patience to read this whole thing - WOW! I'd love to know what you think!
Thank you for the question!

so like, no longer human is kinda weird, right? (very long post below)
by this point i have consumed almost all canon bsd media (the whole manga, anime 6/8 light novels etc) and i have noticed that there are some interesting inconsistencies with how dazai's ability works. now, i know that all abilities are basically mcguffins for plot points in some way or another but i don't think there is an ability used in this capacity as much as no longer human is.
and really, the average reader should just leave it there and enjoy the media for what it is. but i'm crazy and i love overanalyzing the muses i write so i'm going to try and break down no longer human and write out the true succinct rules of this ability.
let's start with the concrete rules we know about no longer human first:
it can nullify any and all abilities, no exceptions
dazai cannot turn off his ability
he nullifies through touch
so the first point is pretty strict but this allows us to glean some information about other characters through this.
when kyouka first appears, she is able to grab dazai and use her ability to capture him. now, we don't know how kyouka took him to the port mafia. she could have simply threatened him with demon snow and he followed along with her (hence how he let himself get captured). but how did kyouka even summon her ability in the first place if she had grabbed onto him? you can explain this by the fact that demon snow was still controlled by the phone and therefore kyouka was not the source of the ability.
guivre became something more than an ability. if he were something like corruption, dazai could have just nullified it and stopping the rampaging gravity godzilla from destroying all of japan. this is definitely one of those moments where the answer is 'because plot' since this was chuuya's story and chuuya had to overcome verlaine on both a physical and emotional level. but realistically, guivre is a big, slow moving monster that dazai has said multiple times in storm bringer could kill him (pages 278, 293).
could it be that singularities affect no longer human differently? it would explain how creating a singularity in beast allows dazai to connect the fragmented worlds in the book. but why can he still nullify corruption? maybe this is because the singularity is contained within a physical body, whereas guivre was a being of pure gravitational force created by verlaine's singularity. these are the only instances in which dazai has come in contact with a singularity so there is nothing yet to refute that no longer human works differently with singularities.
that brings us to the second point. this one has not been broken but i would like to bring up something about this rule that i just love to remind people. dazai is not part of all men are equal because he cannot turn off his ability to allow himself to be connected to it.
now this brings us to the third point where most of the inconsistencies come from. because it is shown that the concept of touch is defined with whatever asagiri feels like at the time.
let me give you some contradicting examples:
in the day i picked up dazai (side a), oda is able to use flawless in order to see when pursuers shoot dazai in the chest in order protect him from the oncoming attack. for now, this is a fan translation so take this with a grain of salt but it does mention how oda sees the blood bloom on dazai's chest from the bullet to confirm that he was using his ability on dazai and not the bullet. okay, that's fine because oda was not touching dazai. however, earlier dazai notes that he wasn't worried about oda cheating in cards because abilities don't work on him even though he wasn't making physical contact with oda then (oda was using his ability on the cards, not on dazai).
he didn't need to touch the number ability user in dazai's entrance exam; it simply did not work on him.
dazai was not affected by draconia / can nullify rashomon simply by coming in contact with the cloth / was not affected by the gun created by the matchless poet. this means that dazai does not need to touch the ability user in order to nullify tangible abilities.
in meursault, chuuya was able to use his ability to stop the elevator dazai was in so he wouldn't fall to his death. in addition, gogol was able to use the overcoat to bust dazai out of prison by surrounding dazai with his ability but not allowing it to touch him. so this means that if there is a material between dazai and the ability, then he cannot nullify it.
however, he could still nullify the grapes of wrath while touching steinbeck on his clothed shoulder.
okay, but here is the kicker and the reason i'm writing this whole thing.
in the dazai, chuuya, age fifteen light novel, the way chuuya is able to defeat rimbaud is by wrapping himself in garland that dazai is holding the other end of. because dazai was touching the garland, that cloth carried his ability to nullify and essentially created armor for chuuya against the onslaught of illuminations. like, HUH??? this flies in the face of everything we know about dazai's ability.
i have a feeling asagiri retconned this, which is why the 15 arc in the anime is so different and we know that asagiri is consulted on the anime. this would also explain why the anime-only hand holding scene is shown in the manga during chapter 101. but what if i don't retcon this? would that break how dazai's ability works irrevocably? i don't think it would.
here are the real rules of no longer human
it can nullify any and all abilities, no exceptions
singularities interact different with no longer human
dazai cannot turn off his ability
all abilities are nullified immediately upon contact with the ability user
touching tangible abilities like rashomon or the matchless poet is enough to nullify it
materials like doors, elevators, etc do not carry his ability through them
cloth carries his ability. this includes clothes and bandages
abilities meant to affect other people do not affect him; abilities meant to affect the user still work on him. this is why flawless works on dazai but something like the number ability does not.
so that's it! these are all the findings i know of where dazai's ability doesn't work precisely how it's described as. but i think with these rules, we have a more cohesive understanding of how no longer human actually works and the rules it follows.

I meant it less as you shouldnt be writing Dazai x reader fics and moreso that it doesnt make sense. Like...let me see if I can figure out how to word this. Its like if I didnt find video games enjoyable, but still chose to put time into making one. Youre free to do what you want, Im more so confused as to why you choose to (or why it would be enjoyable) if it contradicts the entire mindset you have about Dazai and relationships
Mmmm this is where it gets interesting.
Because of this, I feel like yandere Dazai could work. He starts to idolize you in a sense, he starts to see you as his only reason to live and take another breath or step on this hollow Earth. Regular Dazai would just stop there and calmly progress on his own at his own pace with you by his side helping him out on occasion along with the rest of the agency members, Kunikida in particular.
But yandere Dazai?
I remember a scene in the second season (this is when he was still in the Port Mafia) he says that whenever he thinks something is even worth obtaining it is immediately lost which is often true in his sad life, just look at what happened to Oda for example. Oda was everything to him and if Oda wasn't in his life Dazai would be a totally different person and this feels even more true since I read the Beast manga.
I won't spoil the manga because it honestly really is quite short but it's totally worth the read, the ending made me tear up a little. He did all of that so he could see and be with Oda again, just imagine how he would be with a lover .... Oh the possibilities, my poor heart cannot control itself!!! He would do everything, absolutely everything to keep you safe, no matter the cost. This is why I'm low key bummed how some people think that Dazai would be a pure sadist who takes pleasure in your pain. While that element is certainly there (ESPECIALLY Port Mafia Dazai!!!) I just think he wants to love you and be loved in return, even if his methods usually involve heavily manipulating you in every sense of the word.
It's the idea that someone who is willing to destroy the whole world and rebuild it anew just for the sake of his twisted love that's so attractive to me.

osamu dazai ★↷
↪ the very first thing dazai noticed about you was that your eyes contradict your personality. you always seemed so upbeat and happy, he had no doubt that you were to some extent but there was something about your eyes that made him think something deeper lay.
↪but who was he to down your spirits and ask you such personal questions. it just meant he could make up ways your eyes became that sad looking. he wasn't dumb in any way however, he knew what it most likely meant. another reason for him not to pry.
↪he knew even though you always seemed so happy and in his opinion had great friends you would stil hold whatever made your eyes seem so tired. and maybe if you trusted him enough and told him, he would offer comfort.
↪rare yes, and he's not that great at it but he would try his hardest for you. your jovial nature now shouldn't be affected by your past, you've tried your hardest to get past it. why go back?
doppo kunikida ★↷
↪upon first meetings, he wouldn't really pick up on your abnormally sad looking eyes. in his view it was just how you naturally looked and asking about it seemed rude. although he did start finding it curious in comparison to your upbeat nature.
↪he would never dare pry. when he did start picking up on the signs that it may be more to do with something else than just being your natural look, he was curious but tried so hard not to let it become something more. he didn't feel it was any of his business.
↪the only way he would ask would be when you tell him yourself, whenever that may be. then he would feel as if he could ask questions but still would treat it with care. but if it was something particularly bad, he would offer nothing but comfort.
↪and since he still wouldn't pay mind to how your eyes paled in comparison to your nature. it's just how you were, why would he want that to change?
ranpo edogawa ★↷
↪ranpo wouldn't care too much when he first met you. sure your eyes did stand out when compared to your personality but that was about it, he could make a guess why. and that really wouldn't change.
↪even as you two became closer, he didn't really care. that's just how you were and if you didn't want to tell him why, that not only confirmed a theory but he respects your privacy and would never mention anything.
↪although sometimes wouldn't help but make a comment about how you should 'cheer up' or about 'don't look so sad'. and if you ever told, again it wouldn't really change. sure he would offer support but to him that was just how you looked and acted. and he didn't mind one bit.

I like Dazai but tbh I don’t like seeing people portray him and Chuuya as like uwu fun older brother figures for Yumeno. Like Dazai was really contemplating on killing them and Chuuya wasn’t stopping him either. And Yumeno clearly resents Dazai for how he treated them.
Everyone talks about the abuse cycle with Dazai and Aktugawa but I don’t see enough people acknowledge that with Dazai and Yumeno, especially considering that they’re only 13 y/o in the present series. They’re still a child who’s a product of Dazai’s cruelty.
Here’s a long stream of consciousness rant where I ramble about nothing for ten minutes
don’t wanna delete this, don’t wanna post this, but a secret third thing (ie posting it under a cut)
Anon I have THOUGHTS.
about the inherent hierarchy of ability users and how it’s so prevalent throughout BSD yet never addressed directly.
(I do get around to commenting on your ask specifically, but it’s a few paragraphs down)
And the reason your ask made me think of this is because Q was actually the first character who made me begin thinking about this.
See, when Q’s introduced, Dazai says something like “and they have the most vile gift of all; mind control”. The way he says it makes it sound like it’s less his own opinion and more so the common view of things; that any variation of mind control is the most horrendous ability.
Which makes sense, to enter someone’s mind and force them to act against their will is invasive to an extreme. It definitely crosses all the lines, and in a world where mind control exists, it would probably be judged to be equivalent to rape, as both involve forcing someone to physically do what you force them to, without their consent, invading their mind or body in the process.
So we know there’s a stigma against mind control ability users. The moment someone develops an ability like that, they’re bound to become a social outcast. Even their close family and friends may lose trust in them.
We also know that abilities can be grouped as “combative” “general” and “non-combative”. Although it’s not stated outright if this is a common grouping system or rather just one the ADA uses, it would make enough sense for such a set of groupings to be used elsewhere. “Can your ability cause harm? Can it do anything other than cause harm?”
As far as I can recall, this is the only grouping system for abilities that was mentioned so far. And I think it says a lot that the one thing that it’s based on is how much harm an ability can cause.
There also seems to be some stigma against powerful (combative) ability users, claiming that either they’re too overpowered to ever have to work hard or learn skills, or that everything in life must have been easy for them, and they were set for life the moment they discovered their ability.
We see this stigma multiple times, mainly directed towards Atsushi and Chuuya. They both contradict and prove these claims wrong repeatedly, yet there will always be opponents they face who firmly believe these stereotypes.
So we see that stereotyping people based off their abilities is prevalent in the Bungo Stray Dogs world. And then you have characters like Mushitaro, whose ability’s only purpose is to cover up crimes. And character like Kyoka and Fyodor(?), whose abilities can’t do much more than kill. And you’re left wondering where that leaves them, and what chance did they have to not get involved in crime in the first place, with how we could infer this world treats people with abilities like theirs.
And then we have Dazai. The one person who has a fighting chance to see beyond the stereotypes and “ability racism”(?? not really sure what to call prejudice based around superpowers in the Bungo Stray Dogs universe), yet he happens to be the person introducing many of the stereotypes. Of course, you could argue that he has the most experience with ability users and therefore has seen firsthand that these stereotypes are often correct. But that’s besides the point. Back to my first statement about hierarchy.
Dazai exists above the ability hierarchy, because he can shut off any ability at will. The more a person relies on their ability, the more Dazai is a threat to them, putting him far above them on a hierarchal scale. And who tends to rely the most on their abilities? Powerful ability users. The ones who have the most stereotypes against them.
Naturally those are the ones Dazai would end up interacting with most, and given how, in most cases, we can assume they didn’t expect to be dealing with an ability nullifier, they hadn’t planned for this possibility and lost by default. So you can’t really blame Dazia for thinking so low of them, but you also can’t blame them for losing against a variable they had no way of knowing existed in the first place. The stereotypes are incorrect because Nullifier Georg, with negative a million abilities, is an outlier adn should not be counted. [as you can tell I have a favorite Tumblr meme]
BACK TO Q!! BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL ASK!!
That whole entire scene of retrieving Q makes me think of the inherent heirarchy of ability users, but mainly how Dazai stands above them.
Alone in a room with Q and Chuuya, two of the most powerful ability users who can each single-handedly wipe out a city, Dazai is still able to display his dominance. His point is correct, he can kill Q— and Chuuya’s observation that he (Chuuya) wouldn’t be able to do anything about it is correct as well.
I don’t believe that Dazai had any intention of actually killing Q, nor do I believe that Chuuya didn’t realize that Dazai had no intention of doing so. It came across as a power move. “You’re the most powerful ability user in the city, and they’re the most dangerous, yet neither of you could do anything to stop me at this very moment”.
I’m working on my analysis for chapter 31 at the moment (the chapter where this whole scene happens), and of course I point out how wrong and messed up it is to put a knife to an unconscious child’s throat, regardless of if you intend any harm. But another point I bring up repeatedly in the Anti-Dazai Series is how Dazai has this recurring habit of subtly reminding the characters who aren’t fully in control of their abilities (mainly Atsushi and Chuuya) that he’s their only hope. That he’s the only safety net they have. That he’s the only thing standing between them and losing control and killing all their loved ones. So to follow this pattern, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he has Chuuya acknowledge outright that there’s nothing he could do, and then a few panels later reminds Chuuya that he’s the only off switch in the world.
so yeah, Dazai’s not “big brother material” for Q.
and neither is Chuuya, at least not in the scenes we saw them together in— he outright admits he despises Q for killing his own people.
Of course everyone can headcanon whatever they want— have fun and enjoy the fandom experience!! But I personally think Q’s just a kid and they deserve better.
