The Most Underrated Line In All Of ATLA/TLOK And Its Many Worldbuilding Implications - A Ramble

In S2E7 of TLOK we get this dialogue from Wan and The Aye-Aye Spirit: "There are other Lion Turtles?" "Of course there are - dozens of them!" [timestamp 3:38 in this video]

It's such a quick line it's easy to miss, but there's one thing about it that made a LOT of things click into place for me about the Avatar universe's worldbuilding; the fact that there are (or were) dozens of Lion Turtles. NOT four, with one for each element, like you would assume. Dozens.

What does this mean in terms of the Four Nations? What connections might this have with other previously established lore? Well uhm follow me on this journey. I guess.

Pre-Unifications - A Global Warring States Era?

A warring states era on a wouldn't be nearly as compelling if there were only four Lion Turtles. If this were the case, everything would be perfectly balanced; why would there be disarray, violence, cultural disparity and struggles for power within each elemental group if the world was already perfectly divided into four solid groups? Why would a national identity be in question at all?

But the fact that there are more than one Lion Turtle per element... that means different groups of people being isolated from one another for long periods of time. This means different bodies of identity, regardless of element. Different city states, regional Kings, Queens, fiefdoms, dynastic power struggle, etc etc, before any sort of inherent loyalty the ones element as a national and cultural identity was established.

We know the Avatar world was not always divided into Four Nations. In Chapter 21 of The Rise Of Kyoshi we learn that Guru Laghima - a name you'll recognize from TLOK S3 - was from an era when the Four Nations had not yet been formed. We also know from Zaheer that he lived about 4,000 years before the events of TLOK (for context, thats about 6,000 years after Wan became the first Avatar).

There's further confirmation of this in Smoke And Shadow, where we learn about the first Firelord and the Fire Nation's unification wars.

However there's implications of this even in the original series; it's not some sloppy ret-con from the books and comics, it fits. Think Omashu:

In S2E2 of ATLA we get the story of Oma and Shu - and we learn that they come from "warring villages." Now why exactly would their villages be warring if The Earth Kingdom already existed? Why the need for a power struggle? Why is it not presented as a civil insurrection or civil war, but as a conflict between two distinct groups of people? The answer is that the "Earth Kingdom" as we conceptualize it did not exist. I'd go further and say that we can assume that after Omashu was established it became a powerful regional kingdom, and created strong sphere of cultural influence. Think about it - Bumi is King Of Omashu. King. NOT the Earth King, King Of The Earth Kingdom, but still King Of Omashu.

[Now there's some debate about where Omashu's founding sits on the timeline but to me it HAS to be post-Wan, probably very nearly immediately post-Wan. The line that calls them the "first earthbenders" and that they "learned earthbending from the badger moles" has caused some to question if they fit in with the "Lion Turtles bestowed bending" lore, but to me it fits pretty easily. The Lion Turtles may have bestowed the power but the actual technique was learned from the badger moles and dragons and blah blah blah.]

I also find this line from Jianzhu in The Rise Of Kyoshi very illuminating:

FC Yee And Gene Luen Yang Accidentally (?) Make Avatar's Cultural Mish Mash Make More Sense

Avatar's cultural gumbo of visuals has always been a little hard to parse. If you follow @atlaculture then you know it'd be kind of fruitless to try and apply any one single ethnicity/culture to one nation. A common, and very valid, criticism of Avatar is the pan-asian approach it takes to worldbuilding. I'm not here to defend that lol. I think people who dislike Avatar on that basis are well within their rights to do so, and I also think it's important to enjoy things critically.

HOWEVER, from a worldbuilding perspective, the mish mash becomes easier to swallow when you think of it in terms of multiple groups of people being unified into different nation states over a very long period of time and slowly intertwining their cultures into a single(ish) identity.

Take the Fire Nation for example: in FC Yee's The Shadow Of Kyoshi we learn that the government was much more decentralized and the country was controlled by different clans, like the Saowon and Keosho, who had individual spheres of influence and strong senses of identity. It makes me think about Mai and Ty Lee

They're both Fire Nation nobles and they both live in the Fire Nation capital - but their styles/clothes are completely different. Now, obviously that can be boiled down to personality-based character design but. There's a wide discrepancy between Mai's Edo Japan inspired hair and Ty Lee's Thai inspired performance outfit, and a little retroactive canon about them being part of different but powerful clans .. ? Yeah. That'd be fun, at the very least.

I could go on about this... was there a Water Lion Turtle at the north AND the south? How did the airbenders transition from relatively sedentary life on a Lion Turtle to nomadism? etc etc etc BUT in conclusion: TLOK and the comics have some very fun worldbuilding implications snuck in there !! Which makes up for a lot in my opinion. Personally I'd KILL for an Avatar series set in the warring states/unification period... I think that could be insanely cool...idk. The End. For Now.

Make no mistake, SEVEN and 3D are singing about the same thing. If SEVEN was in your face, 3D is subtle. But they are both just talking about sex here. okay i absolutely adore the voice erik has been using for hush like it’s super like ‘plain’(?) but it’s like perfect for his character. it’s not crazy deep, high, monotone or anything like that. (it’s sweet!)

when his first video came out i wrote some things about it, and here’s what i said (with a couple of edits LOL)

anyways my hush first episode deep analysis 🤗 (bullshit)

now for hush, i feel like we’ll guess everything under the sun, from that he’s a sovereign, he’s a shade, he’s a demon shade hybrid whatever, and then come to find out he’s actually david’s left asshole hair but i do have some small theories of my own

i feel like he is genuinely a part of the meridian. like a chunk of it. i don’t know what he looks like, (probably a human like body, obviously, or the listener wouldn’t have tried to help). the only reason i say this is because when he was giving the ‘complicated’ answer of what he was, i couldn’t even begin to tell you what the fuck the visuals might have been. (if there were any) i don’t know what the meridian looks like, but maybe that’s what it sounds like? also he has no core.

i would like to mention when the video might have taken place. we have no clue is what i wanted to point out. this could be before the inversion, the day after, the next decade after, the decade before, hundreds of years before, etc. it has become a bit troublesome in that department as erik likes to drop random time and date drops in his story push videos. (ex; avior and elliot, which is very convient i might add)

i’m scared of hush’s intentions like he tied us up after we saved him and i hate when i like evil kind of guys 😭

i didn’t finish writing everything i was thinking, but with the most recent videos this is what i have to add on.

hush literally told us straight up ‘i can understand why they think (the articulates, chorus) they have to (send articulates to kill him). oh that’s easy. because they think i’m going to free their god from the prison they’re in. well they think that because that’s *exactly what i’m going to do.*’

UHM OKAY?? huge bomb dropped on us. BUT that solidified to me he was a chunk of meridian. no core, not exactly human, not a demon. (okay thats probably wrong but what the fuck else 😭)

and besides that all i have else to say is for the timing thing, i still have no idea, i want to think it’s after inversion but i’m not sure. (if you have any theories on the timing please let me know what you think!)

there was definitely a lot happening in one episode. (also i watched it when it was released so my memory of every detail is bit iffy, spare me 🙏) it was like heartbreak all over again, hearing lasko stressed out and all the people screaming and yelling definitely wasn’t pleasant, but it was interesting seeing what else happened on the outside besides what we already know.

also, the inversion has been almost two years ago now. so i really wonder how starlight and avior are doing in present time. i would say ‘hopefully peaceful’ but present time isn’t even peaceful 🙃

honestly its been a while since i’ve watched all avior lore, and i think when the next lore(?) video of him comes out i’ll theorize a bit more, this post is definitely long but i don’t want it to be too extensive. (bullshit)

my heart broke when he agreed to that ‘deal’ just to find out why blake’s lover would die and HE DIDNT KNOW WHAT HE WAS AGREEING TO. AND THEN TO FIND PUT HE HAS TO HELP THEM?? WHY

now he has to do whatever they say to help?? why 😭

and why do the sovereigns need to use blake and bestie(?) i only ask because is hush not going to free them? well to be fair we have no idea when this thing with hush is even taking place, or when bestie is set to die, or what blake is even going to do when he ‘breaks’ to free them.

and what if his will is strong enough and he doesn’t break? or his listener doesn’t die? 🤗 (wishful thinking guys!)

but actually going back to the audio whoever brachium was talking to DID say,

‘He is a tool. One that has to be broken so that it can be refashioned to a new purpose.’

KEY WORD: REFASHIONED. maybe hush is a chunk of meridian, but with blake’s body..? but he has not core. OKAY IDFK BUT he must be related to hush somehow i just don’t know how. i’ll think on it more. but blake is only a seer so i really don’t know what he could do with his current power, but who knows really.

also the entity (that’s just what i’m calling him idk) brachium was talking to said (in response to: ‘Accept a deal that I have no details of?’) ‘You’ve done it before. The blind choice to become a deathwalker.’ that has me so very curious on what the process of becoming a death walker was like. (okay it probably was explained sort of somewhere, but i don’t remember.) the entity also said ‘You say it was in service of lives.’ whose lives? i have no idea! wow great! 😀

but actually i have no ideas so hopefully everything will be explained eventually 😭

A LOT A STUFF HAPPENED REGARDING THE SOLAIRES

i’ll start with first vincent’s video regarding the summit. WILL IS ACTING FISHY AS FUCK?? he’s hosting the monarchal summit, but he’s just NOT GOING TO BE THERE?? and is leaving everything to vincent?!? how does that even equate?? and then his fishy attitude towards ALEXIS?? that just seems sketch. (i want to get into william more, but talk about porter rq, ig.)

porter solaire. HES BRITISH.(🎊🎉) he’s quite charming, (when he wants to be,) but i can see where vincent and porter’s disagreement came from, but it was semi-resolved (they still have a bit of conflict) so i’m not going to go into and i’m just gonna dissect the summit!

anyways into the more not so heartwarming parts, alexis solaire.! SHE HAS THE PERFECT PERSON TO VOICE HER. that is EXACTLY how i’d imagined she’d sound. and honestly how’d she act as well. i didn’t think she’d be nice to darlin, but i was definitely thinking more of a nasty glare, growl, show of teeth or something and not full on banter, and insults, but i guess that’s just how she acts.

WHERE IS WILLIAM SOLAIRE?? WHERE. like there is no way he just was like, ‘yes vincent, take of the entire planning of the summit, that i’m supposed to be hosting. 😊 and also, i’m not even going to tell you why! and the day of i’m not even going to talk to you! let alone on the phone! 🥰’ LIKE?? AND THEN SOMEONE DIES?? (we’ll get to that.) SERIOUSLY?!

and then ‘House of Baz(?) (truly not sure how it’s spelled) starts saying ‘Make sure Quinn burns.’ ‘It’s not only your pack who wants him dead.’ ‘Quinn has friends and you can’t count on William to keep them at bay.’ (not quotes btw just a summary!) EXCUSE ME??? 😭 WHAT DO YOU MEAN?? DROPPING BOMBSHELLS AND WILLIAM ISNT EVEN THERE TO SAY ANYTHING. AND NOT ONLY BUT HE HIS DISSING ALL OF THEM 💀 ‘Even the golden prince Vincent has spent most of his afterlife as a covert risking menace to the region.’ AND THATS A DIRECT QUOTE. HE IS FLAMING THEM 😭 and with each sentence i swear he is backhandedly insults William and he can’t even be there to defend his name LMAO

but, it does say a lot about him. (i guess if this guy is a semi-reliable source.) ‘William is a horrible judge of character.’ ‘He can throw a fabulous party but can’t surround himself with the right people.’ ’He shields and excuses Alexis and her misgivings.’ ’He apparently delights in trusting the wrong ones.’ HE IS VIOLATING HIM. VIOLATING. this is not me saying all that is not potentially true, but damn 😭 i mean he’s 500+, give him a break? but then again WHERE IS HE??? (lowkey concerned for his safety)

a small little thing with alexis and porter, then the main event.

alexis and sam still must have a small little understanding since she decided to leave darlin alone (as she said at least) but alexis full on said that darlin was dog and he didn’t say anything 😭 i mean i guess he wasn’t trying to argue further but i just took notice.

i was trying to theorize where porters info came from, and all i can think of is a seer. (boring way out ik) now if it was a seer he talked to before the event, (which is why he came back in the first place, possibly, maybe.) he knew they were going to have that conversation, and so he told sweetheart to spy, but then im not sure if he knew that death was going to to happen, but im not sure. or maybe he heard rumors, or overheard them saying they may had that conversation which makes more sense, but hopefully more will be revealed.

WHAT WERE THEY TALKING ABOUT??!

‘If we had waited for you to make decisions two years ago “King” then the entire Inversion would have been for nothings” EXCUSE ME??! okay, okay, i kinda don’t believe this. maybe they had some connection to it. and yes i skipped some so let’s talk about them funding closeknit.

okay so they are funding closeknit because they want to people to join, but the amount of people joining and staying are plummeting because the inversion was two years ago. i have a sneaking suspicion that the reason they were like ‘the inversion was for nothing’ was because closeknit had convinced them somehow that they were the cause, and it would draw people in, and then they’d(house of bennett) would have power. there isn’t a lot of context, but definitely eye openers.

the only thing we have right now to go on is that the sovereigns caused the inversion, (releasing the dead ig? idfk too much shit to keep track of) and i don’t know if they have the power, (or closeknit even) to cause the inversion.

also regarding the timing thing i said about hush earlier, i do believe his whole shabang is in present time because nothing is happening. everything inversion related, sovereigns related, whatever is happening is IN THE PAST. which means in present time blake’s listener could already be dead AND he could have already have ‘broke’ and has something to do with hush (possibly) to help free them.

i was trying to think if closeknit didn’t actually cause the inversion (what i think) but tried to convince the house of bennet to fund them, (if they weren’t already,) it would be showing them the shade. idk bro im grasping onto loose strings here 😭 but PLEASE let me know your theories (that might be the case that blake ‘broke’ in maybe 2022 and he was being kept for a while like the articulate who came to doc’s apartment said.)

DEATH OR MURDER??

okay so the obvious suspect is sweetheart right? king of bennett and prince(?) of bennett having a VERY interesting and PRIVATE conversation, sweetheart goes in to spy on said conversation, those two hear a sound, it wasn’t just a mouse, and then the king of bennett is dead. i think it’s easiest to assume murder. and what could have naturally killed him…? nothing. to my knowledge. 😊

MURDER ( only viable option..?)

first i want to quickly talk about porter and vincent’s interaction before i talk about how the king may have died. porter tried to start a fight with vincent which i assume was for one of two reasons. one, to make a distraction so people would pay attention to them and sweetheart had a chance to leave, OR because he had something to do with the murder and maybe a distraction was apart of the plan. i think the latter.

i don’t think alexis is the killer. ‘but she knew he was dead before anyone!’ what motive did she have? none that i know of, and neither did porter(well maybe he knew that conversation was happening could be one but whatever.)

BUT i guess sweetheart may have had a tiny ass motive as they might have been angry at what they heard, (after all milo went through) BUT i don’t think they would do that. and even if they got caught they would have to murder both of them for them not to get in trouble. now my tiny theory is that sweetheart DID get caught spying and maybe the prince thought the king sent someone to assassinate him and then yk but whatever (far fetched 😔) IDFK we don’t even know the cause of death. 😭 Alexis just said he’s dead, not ‘the king of Bennett was killed’ or some shit so we don’t even know. and as a vampire, how many causes of death could he really have? does garlic and wooden stakes apply?? can he get murdered in regular human fashion?? as you can tell this post has many questions and zero fucking answers. like could he have been poisoned?? what can vampires be killed by in the redacted universe?? i’m guessing the number one suspect is the person who was in the room with him ‘alone’, but i feel that’s too obvious. and i mean we don’t know the exact time jump from when the king was killed, from when porter was trying to instigate a reaction from vincent, from when alexis found the body, when sweetheart went to spy, etc. we don’t even know exactly where the body was found. 😭 so i’m not going to settle on any one person being ‘the killer’ for now until another video is released but i have a feeling it won’t be like an exact continuation of the summit and maybe like an aftermath type video. idk but we’ll wait and see i guess.

So my read of “Time Warp” and it’s place in, like, the greater picture of ‘Rocky Horror’, is that... it’s almost like a microcosm of the whole show in a way? You take a piece of 50′s-60′s kitsch (Horror\Sci-Fi B-Movies for all of Rocky Horror, silly dance crazes for the Time Warp) and you, well, warp it through a 70′s sexy countercultural lense. Time Warp’s vaugely sci-fi time-travel theme isn’t that out of place with actual 60′s dance crazes when you consider the Monster Mash and the Martian Hop exist, but the fact that it prominently features pelvic thrust as one of it’s main moves gives it a bit more of a sexual undertone.

The big common theme of the verses is to, like, exaggerate the tone in which these dance-craze-song talk about the dances to a comedic level. So instead of the song going “oh do this dance it’s so fun!” it’s “this dance is the only thing that is keeping me sane, it’s like a dream, it literally transformed me into a being that cannot sense time!”.

And each spesific verse has one of Frank’s entourage do their silly praise of the Time Warp by comparing it to something thats:

A. Weird to Compare a Dance To B. Somehow on the theme of 70′s Counterculture C. Relevant to their character.

If we start with Riff-Raff’s verse:

This is... drug imagery. Specifically alcoholism (”Drinking those moments when\the blackness would hit me”). Now, Rocky Horror is surprisingly more coy in its references to Drugs compared to it’s trio partner, Sex and Rock’n’roll... but those that exist do tend to center around Riff-Raff: the “Flow Morphia slow” line in ‘Over the Frankenstein’s Place’, “He thought you were the candy man” was apparently in reference to an old euphemism for a drug dealer, you can catch him down an entire bottle of wine when the characters go to the lab...

Riff-Raff’s verse is about comparing the Time Warp to a drug. Cause those are both ways he tries to hold on to his sanity against the general misery and dismay of his life.

Magenta’s verse is also interesting:

First, I will remind everyone that Riff’s the one who sing the “you’re under sedation” part of the verse. Again, comparing the Time Warp to a drug is kinda his Thing.

Meanwhile, Magenta’s thing is more... I guess you can like this verse to her habit of spying on people via the castle’s security cameras, but I think it’s more about fiction? And probably spesifically movies. I mean, when you watch a movie, you’re like a voyeur from another universe, watching everything while being totally unseen. It’s often compared to a dream or a freeing fantasy. (And since in the stage version, Magenta generally shares an actress with the Usherette that sings Science Fiction/Double Feature, you can say that there IS literally a version of Magenta in another dimension watching all of this unfold). Movies are known for playing with one’s sense of time... and that’s exactly why Magenta’s comparing it to dancing the Time Warp.

The connection to the 70′s\counterculture theme is a bit more loose compared to her brother Riff-Raff, but she is framing watching movies\doing the Time Warp as a very surrealist and kinda sexual (’with voyeuristic intention’) thing, which is pretty out-of-step with the kind of meanstream culture at the time . For her both dancing and movies are a way to mess with her sense of reality.

Columbia’s verse is the most obvious in regards to her character:

Columbia compares the Time Warp to love, or maybe sex. probably both. This is clearly deeply relevant to her character and also easy to connect with the fun and thrill of the Time Warp Dance. I think here, time ‘meaning nothing’ refers to the hedonistic lifestyle she’s leading. Time means nothing when you’re only living for the now. I know some people like to debate whatever the snake-of-a-guy is talking about Eddie or Frank, but...

I actually think... if we are to look at this verse as a literal thing that happened to her, it makes more sense if it’s just Some Guy? Like, this is just Columbia talking about she got introduced to the counterculture and probably about her first casual sexual encounter, it doesn’t have to be about someone she actually loves right now. Comparing a dance to falling in love is honestly a bit too Normal for theme and also I have a hard time imagining either Eddie or Frank driving a pickup track.

I guess it makes sense honestly, for some ppl to recognize him and for some not to. To some, Lloyds probably just looks a little sickly and dyed his hair black. To others theyre probably like ‘is that the green ninja???’ ‘Nah the green ninja has blonde hair thats just some dude.’

The Cole, Jay, And Zane dynamic has been strong these past two seasons. Love them.

Something else I wanted to mention RE my post from last night.

I guess with this post you could ALSO look at it as Heather is the MF. And is asking Henry!Billy if it was the "girl" they've somehow communicated about before. Particularly as the question is posed to figure out if Eleven is the right girl and I do think either of them could be questioning this. BUT if it was just Henry there would be NO NEED to bring up Eleven's identity. Someone here KNOWS who Eleven is personally and someone here only has (or HAD up till this point) "second hand" knowledge of her and apparently annoyed that she has 'found' them out. But more reasons for why I'm currently leaning toward Heather being Vecna here:

I've talked about this before, but along with Henry's distinctive way of talking, Henry has a distinctive manner about him as well. This was shown very clearly when we were officially introduced to Vecna. Which IMO, to me, looking back, it makes this easy to determine when Vecna is in control of someone and when "he's not." The way they talk and act changes to reflect him. But we don't specifically see Vecna in a lot of the flayed for the majority of the time.

Henry does have his "petty moments," like when he mentions his dad with Nancy for example, but they feel more like a child lashing out than anything else which is what makes a huge contrast for me in how the general flayed (excluding Heather and sometimes Billy) in season 3 act. The "flayed" when being "controlled" are extremely unhinged and bloodthirsty in their behaviors. (just the way we saw Billy to act in the scene referenced in my post and how Will also acted in season 2 while he was possessed.)

A much better example though would have be the assholes from the Hawkins post when they go after Nancy and Jonathan. They're purely sadistic and nearly beastial and they're clearly enjoying what they're doing. This sadism and glee is not something we've seen from Henry/Vecna. Even when Vecna is in pursuit of a victim or hurting someone/thing he doesn't show sadism or any kind of enjoyment, really. Fascination, especially as a child, maybe, but he never seems like he's enjoying or taking pleasure from anything. Henry is very precise and methodical. He is always "restrained". He doesn't have that wild, vicious, animalistic side we see with many of "the flayed". Which leads more to my ideas that Henry can't be the only one controlling them since his behavior when he puppeteers someone vs a lot of the behaviors we've seen the flayed have is so different.

Henry/Vecna also has a tendency to 'comfort' others. We see this with Possessed!Heather in the scene I covered in my post- shes trying to comfort and "tend" to Possessed!Billy's "wounds." Which further mirrors Vecna. Its almost exactly the same as when Vecna wipes Chrissy's tears and when he briefly strokes Max's cheek to comfort her before he starts soul stealing her in the piggyback episode. Meanwhile, Possessed!Billy is angry, he's angry that "The girl" Possessed!Heather seems to know has found out "who" or rather what he is, to the point he grabs Possessed!Heather's arm in a threatening way. Because thats another part of this. Posessed!Billy told the whole party- including Eleven, that the "being responsible" for "this" was "like a shadow." And we've also seen the MF is very concerned with self-preservation even if it seems invulnerable. It does NOT like to be put in situations that cause it "pain" or put it in "danger," even if it seems to have no reservations about inflicting pain on others. Another thing to add is the mindflayer is described often as "a feeling." I've mentioned I think whatever the mindflayer is, it has the ability to manipulate emotions for the worst and it feeds on and is drawn to those negative emotions in particular. The flayed becoming utterly monstrous when "under control" makes sense because if it amplifies all negative emotions like rage and spite, that would make sense for why the flayed get such an extreme spike in sadism and start behaving very aggressively, in a way that has extremely feral / demonic undertones.

Will also describes being "possessed" by the mindflayer as basically feeling like you're drowning. The imagery used when Eleven finds Heather just before she's "taken" is similar, she's pulled down through the "water" into the darkness. This is also laid over top of Will describing the "possession" in a similar way.

There is A LOT OF water symbols/associations particularly with the upside down. I've mentioned some things before but in occultism and esotericism water is linked with things psychic abilities, dreams, visions, other planes, emotions, etc. Water and mirrors have similar associations because of this. Water is also associated with chaos and darkness, in particular the "deep" or the "void". Water has a huge role in life and creation but it usually only takes on those positive qualities particularly in mythology when its directly given them by a 'benevolent' presence. Otherwise, water is a terrifying, fluid, formless black void of "chaos". Water is often depicted acting as a portal and a barrier between our dimension and others in various myth. In some way water seems allegorical for space and the two seem to be conflated sometimes in old texts. Theres a theory that H.P Lovecraft's most iconic monsters are depicted as cosmic sea-beasts for this reason and while they are certainly not of earthly origin, they resemble something that would be most at home in depths of the sea. The Duffers took obvious reference from HP lovecraft's stuff.

The sea and bodies of water have always captivated the human imagination due to their mysterious natures. Bodies of water represent "a world" that we can see, a world that sits RIGHT NEXT TO US, that we can somewhat interact with, but as for what is truly beyond 'the veil' of the water we don't know because underwater is not a world in which humans can naturally and normally exist or explore. Particularly in ye old times.

SO for this reason, yeah, water often symbolizes barriers and other worlds, in a similar way that mirrors do, which isn't hard to apply to the Stranger Things universe nor is any of the other water symbolizations which have all been referenced repeatedly. And these can all heavily relate to the mindflayer PARTICULARLY if its in anyway related to the Leviathan, which IMO seems kinda likely? This is referencing my brain vomit post from before that you don't have to read so I'll recover the Leviathan angle a little bit here from that post.

The Leviathan

is the god of “chaos” and “death” its described as a creature of beastliness, of terror and of undiluted evil. Due to its “demonic” presence in a lot of mythology it has been related to Satan but there is a whole debate about whether or not they’re the same being and/or are actually related– and occasionally if it wasn’t actually “satan” that took the form of a snake and offered the apple to Eve but rather the Leviathan itself that was responsible for this and thus the one who essentially tempted / corrupted humanity with evil. The Leviathan is also thought to represent the sin of envy, the most “poisonous” human emotion. Its also been thought of as the creature that separates the human/material world from the world of the divine by residing in the realm between. The Leviathan is also depicted as an eater of “lost souls” and it is also considered responsible for generating all intrinsic evil into the world. Further, in demonology the Leviathan naturally represents water and we know there is a lot of water symbolism going on with the upside down which further ties all this together. We know in the ST universe we have a lot of concepts that surround negative emotions and feelings and how these emotions apparently act as massive amplifiers for the powers of the psychic in the show. ALSO RE: the post I made about the possible link to the psychics powers and the MF cloud. And I also mentioned the suggestion of the Original Sin back on the Holy Trinity post and how that feels like it could relate to the whole corruption/infection aesthetic the MF seems to have going on and its symbolic relationship to the evils of human nature, etc, which all once again goes back and adds to my theory about the MF in general potentially being a greater force/influence than people give it credit for.

This could all be coincidental, sure, but its fascinating how much of this seems to relate the MF in the stranger things universe. I mean I'd even say this cant be coincidence with the sheer amount of relating elements.

We have the fact that its VERY likely that the MF represents THE SERPENT from DnD. This brings reference to Leviathan in the fact that Levithan is often depicted as a serpent.

We also have the relations to things such as darkness, chaos, matter and water. In occultism, water can sometimes represent the idea of "spirit becoming matter". The MF is made up of dark colored matter, like particles of dust. Matter is energy given form. We also have the concept of the manifestation of spirit in "matter' representing evil, which is a whole weird complicated metaphorical thing in some religions but its interesting to note that the MF is depicted in ST as a type of animated matter. We have the fact that moreover this is a dark, fluid mass, likened repeatedly to a 'shadow'.

The have the relations to drowning and water which seem connected to the UD, which are connected to Levithan in the sense that Levithan is the demon god of water. The MF is a being that prefers the wet and the dark and dry/hot climates are dangerous to it. Moisture is also something thought to facilitate decay, because bacteria responsible for decomp need moisture to thrive, which the MF has also been related to heavily directly in canon.

We have the fact that its believed Levithan exists in a realm parallel to the human world that separates the human world from the world of the divine. This can relate this to the MF and UD in the sense that UD is a strange plane sitting opposite of the human world which the MF was found within.

We also have the fact that Leviathan is thought to be responsible for generating all "evil" into the human world. (And as mentioned, theres a theory that it was the Leviathan that corrupted mankind in myth) Like the element of water that Leviathan rules over, it is associated with "emotions" (particularly unpleasant ones). We know theres a big link in the ST universe with emotions and in particular we know it seems that the MF creates and is drawn to negative emotions.

We have the fact that Leviathan is heavily associated with the emotion of envy, which is considered to be the most toxic, poisonous emotion. We have the fact that MF's presence literally rots and decays things it comes in contact with. Envy has long been associated with rot and decay. Envy is also represented by the colour yellow, which is also associated with poison and madness. Green and Yellow are sometimes used interchangeably in this way. The saying "Green with Envy" is probably the most popularized but its a regional thing because "Yellow with Envy" is also correct again depending on region. Yellow is a repeating colour in stranger things and its the particular color we see surrounding the MF when Henry first finds it in the UD. Again yellow is associated with things like poison/madness/envy/filth/rot. Yellow (Like green) is used to represent "bile" and in ye old times an "envious" person was thought to be "filled with bile". People stricken with envy were also depicted as pale and looking sick. The MF's victims / the flayed all look pale and sick. And they're "rotting." This further ties together all the rot/sickness/infection/poison aesthetics in the MF. We also have the fact the MF is named the MF after the Mindflayers in DnD which are evil creatures that resemble humanoid octopi. This furthers the MF's sea creature likenesses. The Levithan is also called "the great devourer" and "Hells mouth". Its depicted as a thing that feasts upon souls and even as a literal gateway to hell. (Also mentioned before I think the MF takes heavy reference from IT/Deadlights) I've been over the digestive type of imagery with the way the MF/UD's presence rots things as if consuming them with the weird slimy shit that appears to represent saliva. We also have the fact that somehow Vecna's powers allowed him to not only know how to suck out souls but to actively engage in this and the reason how he knows this and why he does it is still up in the air. Also in how the THING, a creature of extreme reference in ST (no really so many scenes in S2 and particularly 3 are direct references to the thing) is literally a fucking living digestive system that bizarrely doubles as womb allowing it to replicate its victims which it assimilates into itself. Birthing/rebirth imagery is also present with the MF and the upside down. The MF is shown to literally 'create' things. Horrible abominations which are extensions of itself, but its apparently creating "life" none the less. Vecna's body and form is no exception to this and he claims the MF made him what he is.

There is the idea of the Levithan being a shapeshifter of sorts and related to things such as possession, and multiple consciousness. The mindflayer has a fluid body that it can change shape, the mindflayer is able to literally invade bodies and apparently can assimilate consciousness within itself hence being known as a 'hive mind'.

Also mentioned in my other post I think its interesting how Will's painting depicts the party facing off against a multiple headed dragon. The Leviathan is also depicted as a multiple headed dragon. Its size is also suppose to be massive, just like the MFs "full" form is.

Another fun thing to mention is demonologists and witches and such who claim to have some kind of "astral" encounters with the Levithan claim that it is associated with despair, pain, loneliness, isolation, desolation, the sea, and defense. They say its colour is black and it is a master of shadow work. Furthermore even more interesting still its thought Levithan's "domain" is "a desolate and dry land full of steep canyons" (This is facinating given the fact Leviathan is a creature of water and also relates to the MF given it is also a creature that is apperently related to moisture and water but the UD was shown to be a desolate and seemingly dry land when Henry found it) And honestly there is actually SO MUCH MORE but I'm losing attention span here because I wanna go play pokemon BUT YEAH ANYWAY. More food for thought.

preface: those are my unordered impressions as a ~2017-2022 dd1 player

soooo my darkest dungeon TWO thoughts are:

FIRST OFF WHY NO NATIVE LINUX SUPPORT??? i personally know unity can compile for linux, though im not sure how its quality is for more elaborate games, i WISH theyd upload a native linux build like dd1. im complaining cause the game does not SKIP frames but slows down to 10 fps for me, which makes it super slow and basically unplayable, unless i close everything else and frankly lobotomize most of my laptop functions. this compared to dd1 (which I KNOW was a different engine and 2d, but still) is a massive performance downgrade

secondly the gameplay loop is just... unenjoyable to me? gone is the safety of retreat to my home base (hamlet) and the choice of whether press on or return. the paths have too little variety to me, with exactly one possible event between them. tacking onto that, i feel the one combat item per character is just too restrictive, especially considering how much debuffs get applied to my heroes during even the first act

hero death: means basically nothing? like skills stay unlocked due to the backstories (which i ADORE BTW! thats a really fun thing to add!!!) so when you get lucky the first act your second act is a breeze. ad to that the fact that you have to unlock EVERYTHING, making the first runs awfully frustrating and the latter frustratingly easy, it feels unrewarding all in all

and its the little things too, like every enemy applying block and me just spamming aoes without a thought to whittle it down, less useful healing skills, the relationship system that actually made me excited for the game having either no influence on my gameplay or screwing me through rng...

oh yeah, the fucking tooltips on skills being just symbols though there's space to write the word out, now that i think about it the ui is just cumbersome, holding alt or ctrl for every little thing isnt very accessible :(

i know red hook wanted to make this experience distinct from dd1 while retaining the same feel an universe, but i genuinely prefer dd1 to it, because of the little quality of life things I GUESS the animations are SO BANGER tho i LOVE how they translated the 2d into the 3d!

Okay there are maaaany reasons that i cant all put here but i guess i will put what comes to mind rn

1- They just understand each other on another level. If you pay attention they almost never judge the other's actions (and boi there is a lot to judge if we are honest jsbdksjs) and they just GET IT you know?? They didn't have exactly the same lives but they went through their own shit in life and its like even before they got together they had an unspoken understanding of each other that they didnt experience with anybody else. As much as Emma's family loves her, there ARE things that they just can't really get. And in Killian's case nobody sees the true him as much as Emma does, no matter what horrible things he did in his past.

2- They are not a constantly on and off relationship. TECHNICALLY once they got together they never broke up. That one time in s6 is debatable. Yes she gave him the ring back BUT SHE DIDNT SAY IT WAS OVER and then Killian was taken away. AND LIKE EVEN WITH ALL THE DARK ONE STUFF THEY NEVER ACTUALLY BROKE UP??? So yeah they really stayed together throughout double darkness, like 3 deaths and a shit ton of villains. Even if they had fights or problems they didnt end the relationship on a whim, they worked through their problems and came out stronger AND I LOVE THEM FOR THAT. Also i hate on and off couples ejbfjdbdj its so annoying.

3- THE PATIENCE FAM. THEY WERE SO PATIENT WITH EACH OTHER. AND SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT IT WAS ONLY KILLIAN BECAUSE HE WAITED FOR HER, NO! Emma was also patient in many aspects, especially as they became more serious and Killian had many demons to fight both from his past and his present, and she really didnt pressure him into laying out all his troubled past on the table. She allowid him to take his time and tell her things on his own time (like the Ursula thing).

4- THE TRUUUUUUUUUST. There was so much trust in their relationship it kills me. AND YES THEY HAD THEIR TRUST ISSUES WITH THE WHOLE DARK ONES THING BUT COME ON. Honestly i dont think its fair to judge Dark Captain Swan as normal Captain Swan bc it REALLY isnt the same. Outside that time, they really had the deepest trust in each other. AND WE KNOW ITS NOT EASY FOR THEM TO TRUST, especially Emma. But my girl REFUSED to let people talk shit about Killian because she TRUSTED him so much and knew that he wouldnt betray or hurt them even before they got together. (Also that episode where killian is taken in s6 and Emma IMMEDIATELY GIVES UP ON HIM AND THINKS HE ABANDONED HER is absolute bullshit. At that point in their relationship she wouldnt act like that fuck the writers for that one)

5- They are hot together. Period. No need to elaborate.

6- THE TENDERNESS UGHHHHHH THEY WERE ACTUALLY SO SWEET ??? HE IS A DEADLY PIRATE AND FORMER VILLAIN AND SHE IS A HIDE MY EMOTIONS KINDA TOUGH GIRL but they were surprisingly very sweet and tender with each other which was very refreshing to see. Outside Dark CS they werent toxic or like constantly arguing and yelling and being rough with each other and i love them for being so sweet.

7- When they did fuck up it was out of love for the other. I think 99% of times they fucked up was because they were trying to protect the other and if thats not true love idk what is.

8- They never gave up on each other. Never. (Emma in that one episode doesnt count that was EXTREMELY out of character). They were SO willing to fight for each other as a couple and as individuals (before and after getting together).

Okay these are some of the maaaaany reasons.

I see that you also asked me about Hook and bc i dont wanna pay attention in class then i will also tell you what i love about him.

1- Colin. Yes. He is a big part of what makes Killian Jones and why i love him and if it was another actor it could have changed everything.

2- Has THE BEST redemption arc in the show by far. Argue with the wall, thats how i feel. He never justified his actions or try to pin them on "his past self". Yes he is a changed man but the SAME man who did those things and he always carries that guilt with him (sometimes too much). But most importantly, he always works SO hard to make up for those mistakes by both apologising and through actions, actively trying to make amends.

3- The man is fearless. He doesn't give a shit. He will fight anyone to get what he want even when he is clearly at a disadvantage. Respect man haahjsjajsjsnd

4- When he loves... oof he loves so deeply. I dont even have to explain. We see it. He fell HARD man.

5- He is not afraid to show his emotions. Most of the time he wears his heart out on his sleeve, especially when it comes to Emma, even if he gets rejected. That is honestly admirable, wish i could do that lol, it takes bravery.

6- Do i hate him for dying all the time? Yes. Do i also freaking love him for sacrifising himself for the people he loves? Damn right.

7- HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH BELLE 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

The song Romeo and cinderella is a about a teenage girl who is deeply in love with someone who she claims as her romeo.

it is already made really clear that their love is probably in a pretty fragile state in the first line“私の恋を悲劇のジュジュリエットにしないで” / “don’t turn my love into a tragedy like juliettes”. especially with with the tragedy it is clearing up the fact that their love is not a easy love thing to deal with. we still dont know why exactly their love would turn into a tragedy but it at least tells us that theyre not having an easy time with their love.

the first few lines after the first line dont tell us much about why their relationship isnt in an ideal state but they are showing us a sneak peek into their sexual activities.

you can already guess that it is going to have some sexual content in it by the time you reach line 6 “大人はもう寝る時間よ” / “its time for adults to go to bed” and by the time you reach line 7 you’ll eventually know that it’s obviously about sexual inter course.

line 7-18 arent that important for us RIGHT NOW but we’ll look further into them later but in line 19/20 she says “魔法よ時間を止めてよ悪い人に邪魔されちゃうわ” / “oh magic, please stop time villains will interfere” by “bad people” she probably means her parents who do not approve their love (in line 34 “パパはでもねあなたのこと嫌いみたい” / “my dad doesnt seem to like you that much” it is literally stated that her dad does not approve it that much) when she said “villains” since they’d be the ones to control her love life.

in line 20 “逃げ出したいのジュリエット” / “i’m a juliette who wants to run away” she claims to be the juliette of her story so now we have both romeo and juliette which she is projecting her love story onto but the thing is. she doesnt want to be the juliette. she doesnt want to be in a tragic love story like romeo and juliette, she wants to have a happy ever after like cinderella with her own romeo. all thats stopping them is her parents.

now that we have the main plot the rest if the lines arent that important anymore but there is still an important question why her parents dont approve of their love which is why we need many lines including sone old ones.

often you’ll hear her say “パパとママ” which is just dad and mom BUT if romanize it its “papa to mama” and you’d usually only hear little children call their parents パパ and ママ and by only i mean ONLY LITTLE CHILDREN if youre not a little kid you’d say お父さん and おかさん or sth else but not パパ　ママ. there is also that one line that says “ママの作るお菓子ばかり食べたせいね” / “its because i’ve been spoiled with the sweets mom made me” first you can find the ママ again and second the line itself is just something thats reminding me of little kid. if you read further into the text you’ll read many lines where she’s acting more childish and immature. A line thats also a big red flag for their relationship is “私のためと差し出す手に握ってるそれは首輪でしょ” / “youre holding your hand out for me but isnt it the collar youre holding me onto?” which shows how he is not treating her like a lover should. at the end she says “嘘つきすぎたシンデレラ” / “cinderella lied too much” “オオカミに食べられたらしい” / “looks like she got eaten by a wolf” “どうしようこのままじゃ私も” / “what should i do?” “いつかは食べられちゃうわその前に助けに来てね” / “some day i’ll get eaten too, save me before it happens”. with all these lines i’d say the real villains arent her parents but her “romeo”. hes probably taking advantage of her (especialky since has doesnt have a mature mind) and is making her depend on him which is why her parents dont approve their “love” this could be an explanation for why it isnt called “romeo and juliette” or “prince charming and cinderella” because her “remeo” is the tragedy while she dreams of being cinderella.

life's been okay. nothing special. days just keep on going. ive had a job for bout 2 weeks. ig thats not really an achievement tbh.

before this, that work from home place i was barely working, prolly 5-10 hours a week. and i'd slither out of those where possible anyway. this one week i worked a whopping 2 hours within 2 weeks. I was planning on killing myself and occasionally tried to all throughout having those jobs so i wasn't really worried about the consequences

before that the only other in person job i had was for my ex best friend. she worked there so i applied and got a job o work with her. only for her to quit 2 weeks after i got in whiich lead me to quit prolly a week n a half later cause i finally got fed up with the manager.

so now, even tho it ain't the longest ive held down a place, its the first that i really cared to put in effort to hold a job.

im semi celebrating but im honestly miserable. my feet hurt so fucking bad so it literally doesnt matter how good my hours are i never want to leave my bed. the people up there are so cliquey and on my 2nd day out of training one of my coworkers went off on me for going too slow and "not putting in my part". theyre starting to give me longer and longer shifts. i went from working 3-4 8 hour shifts per week to working 3 doubles just like that. they sooo generously give an hour and a half break in between the 6:30-3 and 4:30-8 shift but.. who in their right mind is even leaving atp? i live too far for that. i'd be home for at most an hour. waste of gas.

and to me what's worse, this whole situation is exactly what i've been avoiding. i knew it'd come down to this someday. but what alternative do i have?

HA. you know as a kid, i never understood addiction. I never thought I'd have to deal with it. By the time I was 8 I knew I'd kill myself someday. if i ever felt bad, that'd be what i'd do. no need to force myself to do something i didnt really wanna do. but now it seems so easy. i don't know what i wanna do from here. i hate my job. i hate my home life. i dont like to talk to my friends anymore. im bored of games. im bored of music. bored of tv.

whisking the days away doing what i have to would be a lot easier if i didnt have to be fully present for all of this. just something to pass the time until i have a better handle on what's the next move. right now, the only thing i can do is save up money. i have shit to pay off if i wanna keep a good credit score and i have things i need to buy. what's me hating every second gonna change?

though i know it's a slippery slope. abusing shit aint gon work out as smooth as I wish it would. I'll get addicted and then I'll get used to feeling that way so it'll take more for me not to get annoyed. then it'll turn back to me immediately running back to it for every minor situation. and honestly with the job i got i'd just have to hope i would be able to push through it without it being noticeable

i'm not happy i stopped. i feel like had i still been on dph i would've known for a fact how to make myself look normal. i could be gone out my mind but long as i get the shit right i could just daze through the days. but ya know. now. i ratted myself out

and now im stuck.

nothing more for me to do. nothing else i could be doing. nothing else i should be worried about other than making money

I never understood why adults always told me i'd miss being a kid since i was always struggling so bad. all they ever said is that my problems then were gonna feel like nothing once i was an adult. but they were wrong. i guess for now. but all i wish now is that i used all that freetime back when nooo one woulda suspected anything if i was away for a lil while. back when i wasnt ful grown and it'd prolly take a whooole lot less to finish the job

but here we are. forced to keep going and doing what i can to suppress what i really wanna do

ah speaking of which... i got pissed the other day and i tossed one of my drawers and broke it. then broke my bottle for my vitamins by throwing it to the ground. then i accidentally knocked over this container of beads and instead of just sweeping it back into the thing and reducing the mess, i just kicked it as hard as i could and tore the container apart. there's still beads everywhere

that is something i can't force myself to contain anymore. everything else i've been dealing with fine but when im pissed im pissed. i gotta get that under control too

okay so someone on my dash is rbing alot of stuff about stray so i kinda wanted to give my opinion on it because i keep thinking about it

(stray spoilers ahead! and also outer wilds spoilers and psychonauts 2 spoilers haha)

first thing: stray is a good game! i played it and thought it was nice but (and dont take this as me wanting to be the one person who doesnt like a popular thing) i felt that the story was kinda lackluster tbh

the overall message is nice in the way it portrays the humans and robots but the mystery part of it was just. not all there.. the 2 kinda main mysteries, the plaugue being what killed everyone, and the robot that follows you around being human were things that, not to be like i called it right away.. but i definitely called it right away. like as soon as i met (i think their name was b12? i played this a while ago) and they started talking about this scientist they knew i said, out loud, immediately "oh i bet you're actually the scientist" and then with the plague thing- it was literally in broad daylight, like i play games by reading everything i see and there was just a button prompt that had b12 read you a sign that said something was closed due to a plaugue and i was like oh ok thats what killed them

and i dunno if i just got mislead by something i read about the game having a big mystery or what but i feel like they definitely leaned alot more on the character writing than the world building, which for me personally if you're gonna do that in a game thats like 8 hours at most im not gonna be that invested in the characters

so! as i do with things i dont like sometimes im gonna analyze and critique what exactly i think went wrong

the mystery parts (imo) were too easy to guess right away, making the story feel alot less engaging because i was no longer asking questions about the world

why? well to start off lets look at 2 games which have really good mysteries that i never guessed: psychonauts 2 and outer wilds (heres where the spoilers for those come in lol)

psychonauts 2 and outer wilds both have multiple big story reveals, like stray, but what they both have a lot of that stray kinda didnt is things meant to make you ask questions

in psychonauts 2 for example you have the mystery of who the mole in the psychonauts is, all over theres clues and hints as well as things that definitely wont make sense until later, things like what the mole did and stuff like that. these are things get you to start asking questions and being suspicious of people who arent the mole, thus making you more engaged

outer wilds has this in a slightly different way- instead of characters usually being the ones to point something out that makes you ask a question, its the environment that does it. for example something i noticed on my playthrough of outer wilds was all of the nomai skeletons you see who look like they just died where they stood, that not only got me asking "what killed the nomai??" but it also gave me a clue because clearly if there was a battle or plaugue of some kind someone wouldnt just die while eating dinner.

on top of this these games also have multiple mysteries and multiple reveals that are purposely harder to guess than others so if you guess one thing there will still be other reveals that surprise you

sure some people can probably guess nick from the mailroom is the mole- but i doubt many people guessed he was gristol, despite there being many hints to it that were just off in the background

you can guess that the nomai were responsible for the sun going supernova but you're gonna have a big surprise coming when you realize they wanted to but failed

stray is a game that i feel like really could've benefitted from doing more of this, especially in the environmental clues aspect because the environments were really good! but b12 was the one making anything you see a clue, something you see on its own often didnt amount to anything

like i know the robots have probably been living in the city for a while but if the humans died from a plague why not leave more clues than just a sign that flat out says it? we've quite literally lived through a plague recently, there are gonna be more leftovers than that

i feel like in a way the game's story relied too heavily on just telling you things instead of letting you, the player, ask your own questions and figure it out

it also could've benefitted from making the mysteries more hidden by leading you in other directions or even hiding more things from you and giving you more little mysteries in between

for me i sort of started to not really care much about the story as the game went on- and as someone who's favorite type of game is story oriented i feel like that is.. telling

the characters were cute but they came and went pretty quickly, i legit didnt even start feeling even slightly attched to b12 until the latter half of the game and i honestly think i felt more attachment to the cat than anyone else sjsbsn

in short i dont think stray is bad! its good! but it just didnt hit hard enough for me yknow? stray is kind of like a movie you'd put on and end up looking at your phone alot, it never really gripped me in the way alot of games i like do

#hiii enjoy me rambling #the environmental storytelling part is like. yeah stray kind of didnt have that #every bit of environmental storytelling was quite literally immediately explained when you saw it sjsh #i would say this is a good game for kids if it weren't for the horror parts just bc of how much it holds your hand #dont get me wrong tho i still enjoyed it i just have.. criticizms

Ok this time i actually wrote out what i thought of tsukihime. Im readmoring both for spoilers and length

First off, kohaku's route: really incredible and the way it builds off hisui's route flips a lot of things that seemed innocent on your head, and makes you pay attention to the parts of the plot you already know to understand what Kohaku is really doing and feeling. A good example of this is when Kohaku cuts her finger while cooking and says she can just imagine her hand as a doll hand; in hisui's route this comes across as weird and having more to it, obviously, but knowing exactly what she means makes it a lot sadder to hear.

In general, I think that's one of Tsukihime's strengths you are essentially hearing the same story multiple times, but it manages to recontextualize everything each time and never gets too boring. Certainly there is the difference between the near and far side routes, as well as among the routes themselves, but even those have so many similarities due to shiki's (and SHIKI's) backstory, shiki's connection to the killer, etc. But the timing of the reveals, what shiki does and doesn't know, and a bunch of other things keep the same information feeling fresh, and really lets the game explore all sides of the characters relationships.

Though btw that does remind me why is roa just. Not in the second half? Did he not reincarnate as SHIKI in those? We see Arcueid is in town so one imagines she is here to kill roa. I mean she could just be here to kill the vampire serial killer (SHIKI) but if thats the case she does a real shit job lol. It wasnr that bothersome but it was a little weird to have zero explanation about a major change to backstory.

Anyways i think the near side routes were fine, and arcueid and ciel are both really interesting, fun characters (though i liked arcueid infinitely more) but they definitely lacked the emotional depth the far side routes had. Honestly i knew id like kohaku and hisui as much as i do but i didnt expect to grow to love Akiha as much as i did. It is unfortunate her character is a bit weighed down by nasu's incest fetish or whatever was up with that but pushing past the weird stuff that i think she ended up my favorite character.

And pushing past the weird stuff is like. Required to read tsukihime. Though i will say the sex scenes were very easy to skip thanks tk nasu having specific music for sex lol.

I think besides the weird stuff, though, Tsukihime's major flaw is just the weakness of its themes and symbolism. Which is fine; it more than makes up for that in terms of character depth as well as entertainment quality. But after reading umineko, for example (wow bringing up umineko who would have thought) i really took away a lot of meaning and it's still something i think about in terms of symbolism and themes to this day. The lessons Tsukihime teaches are "killing is bad" and "being nice and forgiving people is good" from what i could tell (though as i let it simmer in my brain i may changs my mind) and those are the same themes as like. Stevens university lol. Again it does a grest job bringing emotional depth to shiki's decision to choose kindness and fight against his nanaya blood or what-not, it just didnt feel like i walked away a changed person like with umineko and similar works. All this does is stops it from being my favorite thing ever, but it was still really enjoyable. I don't do numeric ratings but i think id put this somewhere above steins;gate, and then lowered a bit to account for the fact that nasu was way too horny and way too weird. Which btw i loved steins gate so that means i really loved tsukihime.

This makes me feel mean ranking kohaku so low but honestly all of the route characters were incredible so its not that i didnt like her.

you have a lot of complaints and criticisms for mostly everything erik does, do you enjoy any of the storys? not every piece of media is gonna be how you like and some things are gonna get handled differently than what you'd prefer, long as it isnt problematic then like whats the problem?

I wasn’t going to at first, but i think i'll actually assume good faith with this ask and respond to it genuinely.

I understand why you would think I don't like anything about his content. I’m not here to gush about his characters, or talk about my fanfic ideas, or make friends with other people in this fandom; I made this blog exclusively to complain about it, so that’s going to be the majority of what you see on here, me complaining. And if i'm being honest, critique and criticism, or just complaining about the media not being as good as it could be, is a normal part of being in fandoms. This is a part of fandom culture, one that is just somehow remarkably absent from this fandom, which is still very surprising to me.

You're right about one part of this ask. No, not everything is going to be written exactly the way i want it written, and thats because I didn’t write it. But again, complaining about writing, and brainstorming how things could have been written, and even retconning the writing of the content is a part of fandom culture. Do you know how many fan rewrites i have seen and read in my day??? This is just A Thing that people do.

There are plenty of things that i enjoy about Redacted’s content, im just not usually here to talk about them, but I guess ill take this chance and do it now. I think Redacted has a beautiful voice, and it has been really fun to see him get better at using it in these past two years. In my opinion, the improvement he’s made is kinda remarkable. In the first videos of David’s, he was just using a grumpy tone of voice, but now he’s able to push his voice down into that lower octave and add vocal fry, and it’s gorgeous. He’s gotten better at using accents, which you can really tell with Sam (how he sounded in his first appearance versus now), and the emotion that he’s able to convey with his voice is something i admire (as someone who talks with a very flat tone most of the time). I even think some aspects of his writing are genuinely good. He writes characters that are easy to fall in love with, including the “bad guys” (Regulus, Marcus, my beloveds), and i think a few of them even have complex personalities. And like, yes, i did complain about the way the d(a)emons are written, but only because they’re part of a racism allegory. I still love even them, there are very few characters that bore me or that i hate. And I have said it before on this blog, but i think Redacted’s writing really shines when he’s diving into dark territory; When he is writing gaslighting, and manipulation, and darker content like that he excells and that’s when i think he has moments of genuinely good writing. I also think the man is good with words, he writes beautiful, emotionally impactful lines sometimes. This man is good at writing and delivering lines in a way that makes my heart beat a little faster. Every once in a while i might slip into a post how much i love a character or plotline or aspect of Redacted’s writing, but like i said, im not here to talk about all this, so i don’t do it often.

I really am confused about the last part of this ask though, because half of the things im talking about are ‘problematic’ (as much as i hate using that word). Like…… the entire reason i made that post specifically about the racism allegory is because it is ‘problematic’, its downright offensive and quite frankly racist. The only reason I refused to use the word ‘problematic’ in that post because i think its dismissive for just how bad that allegory is. There’s also a reason i didn’t explicitly call that allegory racist in that post, because of the way this fandom is and how it has a tendency of idoling Redacted. I didn’t do these things to avoid invoking emotional reactions, and i figured that my point would come across without me doing them, but apparently it didn’t for some. I keep talking about and bringing up the bridging SA allegory because its also offensive, and quite dismissive to victims of SA. I keep talking about all of these things he has put in his videos, the racism allegory, the bridging SA allegory, the possibility of Marcus/Love being an allegory for anything, for a reason. Because they are offensive, and thats the problem with them.

Now not all of the things I'm talking about are ‘problematic’, some of them are just the previously mentioned changes that I would make to the writing. Not that these things are bad in the same way the SA and racism allegories are, but some of them are just subpar in terms of writing quality. Again, critique like this is a normal thing that people in a lot of fandoms do.

I'm clearly not the only person to feel these things, but with this fandom the way it is, people don't often openly talk about things wrong (using this word loosely) with the content. There’s this strange idea that has become very popular in recent years, and its that if you have any complaints about or can critique any part of something you're engaging with, that you hate it and should stop consuming it. This idea is so prevalent in this fandom and it’s honestly ridiculous. I have been watching Redacted’s videos for two years, and even though they have dropped in writing quality, I’m invested and I want to see him get better again. And it's not even like this isn't a thing that a lot of people do when they get really into something, this is the exact reason people sit through 8-14 seasons of a show even long after the quality of the writing has gone to shit. I very clearly enjoy his videos enough to continue listening through them, and i’m going to keep doing so.

With all this said, I am also going to continue posting my criticism/critiques in the main tags when I write them with intent and seriousness. My posts that are just “waaaaahhhh my poor little meow meow’s writing sucks” aren’t going to be in there. If seeing either of these types of posts is going to ruin or otherwise negatively affect your experience, I do politely ask that you do us both a favor and just block me.
