v3′s art is comically terrible for a professionally distributed game in a series: a compilation

in this not-essay I will list all of the mistakes and problems I have spotted in v3′s art. don’t worry, it’s entirely for fun and I’m doing this on a whim, so please feel free to not take this seriously but also it’s hilarious and embarrassing how ridiculous this is like what happened did they speedrun the whole production or what

see, there are some things you can take as meta like “they made it bad on purpose to allude to the downfall of tv shows that have been on air for much too long” but I have a very strong feeling this is not the case due to the nature of some of these errors

disclaimer, the more I study this art, the more I fear that the artists were underpaid and underslept, so if this is in fact the case, I am so sorry to all of them but also I’m going to make fun of the art anyway

anyway let’s get started!

if you study this image for longer than 5 seconds, you will see that kaede is the only one fully shaded and keebo is literally just his normal sprite pasted into the image. every other character is just an ordinary ref, hence most of them facing the exact same direction with neutral expressions on their faces. it looks like a bad edit, and is probably one of the worst pieces of art in the game. it kind of gets better from here on, but my roasting will not.

with that out of the way, here’s the problem that officially bothers me the most and clarifies my viewpoint of “this is not meta and an actual lack of company communication”

this freaking cg, which seems normal at a glance, but some wiseass was like “oh, kaede is a girl, so obviously she’s going to be shorter than the Male Protagonist™” ah, that’s funny. because if you look at the character bios, kaede is, in fact, one inch taller than shuichi and not like 6 inches shorter as she is shown here.

also shuichi’s shoulder is disproportionate and horrendous and he looks vaguely like a jojo character, but I wasn’t even thinking about that until right now.

thanks guys, 50% of the fandom who has never bothered to check these bios thinks that kaede is like 5′3 (did the developers really put so little thought into her to the point where drawing her correctly in the game didn’t even matter??)

also I would like to point out that, even though this isn’t related to the art itself, yes, a character kaede’s size being only 117 lbs is unfeasible, but this applies to literally every character in danganronpa ever and it’s not new news that it’s unrealistic

update: someone in the tags informed me that in versions of the game that use centimeters, like the japanese version, kaede is actually shorter than shuichi, which just adds another thing to the list of weird decisions the localization team made for no reason. that said, after confirming this, kaede is 167 cm in the original, while shuichi is 171 cm, which are approximately 5′6 and 5′7 respectively, but one inch is still nowhere near as drastic as it is depicted above. (in spite of this, I would rather depict kaede as slightly taller, so I’m probably going to keep doing that.)

speaking of which, can we talk about how shady the perspective is in this elevator pic? look at shuichi and kokichi in comparison to kaede. kokichi, who is canonically 7 inches (edit: or 5, if you’re loyal to the original) shorter than kaede, looks taller than kaede. he’s growing too. what steroids are these gays taking

running into the room, electric boogaloo: I don’t think tsumugi is supposed to be the same height as kokichi

I love how kaito’s head looks kind of like it was pasted onto his body. why is he the same size as shuichi? shouldn’t he be high school bully size or something? his torso is teensy

I also love how this cg looks like they literally took pictures of trees and pasted them into the background, especially on the left. the shadows are so weird, especially closer to the ceiling, it’s difficult for me to believe they didn’t do exactly that.

puberty update: kokichi is now taller than shuichi in spite of shuichi never missing leg day. what crimes will he commit

I have to mention it, guys. this has to be one of the worst danganronpa cgs. kokichi’s facial proportions look atrocious. look at the way his face sticks out like his jaw is in the wrong place. his scarf is a pasted texture. that’s it. this moment was so iconic but the cg just looks so… so… off. like something is terribly wrong, but you can’t put your finger on it.

you know what? let’s get into that ‘pasted texture’ thing.

let’s imagine you’re an artist working on a professional game. you’re assigned to draw cgs of kokichi ouma, who has a checkered scarf from hell. sure, it will be terrible to draw, but you only have to draw it once at a time! plus, perspective is pretty important, right? can you be bothered? nah, actually. let’s just copy paste a checkered pattern into the cg, because I’m sure nobody will notice. it’ll blend right in with the other cgs that someone actually put effort into drawing his scarf in, right?

no. the answer is no and I very much noticed. this genuinely looks terrible and I would understand taking a shortcut like that in fanart or even an indie game but this is a full price pc and console distributed game

meanwhile, they straight up forgot to color in kokichi’s scarf in this cg.

dude. I forgot about whatever the hell this cg was. anyway look at keebo please just look at him

real talk, maybe you could argue that he’s missing muscle because he’s deathly sick, but most of his cgs don’t line up with this, and his arms just look disproportionate to his torso size (granted this is a consistent problem across all danganronpa games and a lot of characters have this weird problem, like hajime, but also kaito is bigger than hajime so I kind of have higher expectations of him) maybe it’s his stupid goatee and the way he reminds me of yasuhiro?? it creates this illusion that he’s older than he is and so I keep expecting him to look more like an adult

oh, also rantaro is missing some of his accessories in that video he made–you know the one–but I don’t wanna go back and screenshot it

also you may have noticed that I’m skipping all of the monokub cgs because I literally do not care about them and I’m not even bothering to check and see if they have artistic mistakes in them

so, that done, the sprites are also pretty terrible at times. they’re not as interesting to go through, however, and downloading the full sprite sets for every character and studying every single one of them will drive me insane, so I’ll just sum some of the ones I noticed up. I made things for kaede and shuichi before deciding I wasn’t going to get into it, so here are these.

that said, other mistakes include kokichi missing his purple highlights in all of the sprites encompassing a specific pose, stray pixels all over the place on everyone, and everyone also has heavily inconsistent shading, but literally all I think about is how pregame shuichi is unshaded and two of kaede’s pregame sprites have glaring outfit change mistakes in them

anyway, thank you for taking the time to read my ridiculous ramble. in all seriousness, there’s this looming presence of some lack of communication in the development team, like with all the art and design inconsistencies, pieces and sprites that look rushed, stray pixels, and missing basic proportional stuff. these are the kinds of things that you supposedly have to pretty much have in the bag in order to get jobs in professional businesses, so it’s really weird to me that this game suffers from so many of these problems. it’s like they tried to make the art so much more crisp than the other games, but it fell on its face as they realized it was going to take longer to draw everything and they started to rush. it’s weird, because the coloring itself looks normal–it’s just sloppily drawn, and the proportions are a mess once put into the context of perspective. many of the cgs look like they were drawn by different people, and I’m still not over the fact that half of kokichi’s cgs have his scarf pasted in as a texture.

the moral of the story is that if you’re selling a game at full price that also happens to be in a series that has had 3 very good games in it already the stakes should probably be higher than this. v3 has been out for more than 3 years and it’s still $40 (did it cost more than that before? I sure hope not), and the overarching quality of the game is just not as high as the other games. I’m not saying that the other games don’t have any problems with their art at all, they’re just not as glaringly obvious and every artistic choice in those games feels intentional.

regardless, I had a blast roasting the art at 2am, so maybe you got a kick out of all this chaos.

Introducing the Spideychelle Recathon!

I really appreciated all of the hard work and dedication the Spideychelle fandom showed during this year’s Spideychelle Week and I really wanted to find a way to celebrate all of those fantastic creators in this fandom, including those who didn’t participate in the week but contribute to the fandom outside of it. A lot of fan events that are hosted on Tumblr focus on content creation and I wanted to create an event focused on content appreciation.

Then it hit me—a recathon, taking from the words recommendation and marathon; an event that encourages people to rec many fanworks over the course of the event. I’m surely not the first to come up with the idea, but I haven’t seen it in the Spideychelle fandom yet. I hope this event will be a success like Spideychelle Week has proven to be in the past and it becomes a staple for the fandom.

The event will take place in October across all thirty-one days. You do not have to participate for every day, however, and you can pick and choose based on the daily themes that have fanworks that you are passionate about and wish to reccomend to others. I’d like on the chosen day for particpants to create a rec list (it does not have to be a list if you only have one fanwork to rec) and tag this blog (@spideychelleweek) so that I can reblog the rec list. It’s also encouraged that you tag the creators’ you’re reccing and let them know you love their work! If the original creator has already posted the fanwork on Tumblr then you can also choose to reblog their original post and tag this blog, letting me know you’re reccing it.

I hope most of the prompts are self-explanatory, but if not then below the cut I’ll try to simply explain each one. If you have any questions about the prompts or the event then please send in an ask and I’ll answer as promptly as I can.

Day 01 | Classics: Older and beloved fanworks; the type that every fan should read/watch/see and is introduced to every new Spideychelle fan someway or another. These fanworks should have been posted before the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Day 02 | Crossover/Fusion: Crossover is when two fandoms combine, such as a fanwork where Peter Parker meets Robert Patterson’s Batman, while fusion is where the fandoms are merged by implanting the characters of one setting into another, such as the ever popular Hogwarts AU.

Day 03 | Kiss: Fanworks involving kissing, such as a one shot about their first kiss or a fanart of a passionate kiss. Kissing doesn’t have to be the main focus of the work. For instance, if you think a 100k word fanfic has the best kiss scenes then rec it away even if it has 95k words where no kissing is involved.

Day 04 | MJ Backstory: In the MCU’s canon we don’t know a lot about MJ’s family or her life, but the fandom has explored and delved deep into MJ’s character so this slot is for fanworks that explore MJ’s backstory whether it be a down-to-earth depiction of her family or exciting backstory where MJ is a spy.

Day 05 | Fluff: A fanwork that is pleasant and makes you feel good, such as fanworks depicting cuddling or other affectionate actions though fluff isn’t limited to that.

Day 06 | Identity Reveal: Fanworks that explore Peter Parker’s secret identity and it being revealed to MJ (who may already know) or other characters.

Day 07 | Post-FFH: Fanworks that take place after Spider-Man: Far From Home and explore what happens after Mysterio revealed Peter Parker’s identity to the world.

Day 08 | Vids: All kinds of fanworks can be posted for each day, but I imagine most will end up being fics so this day is devoted solely to vids which are video edits often set to music using clips from the films.

Day 09 | Fix-It: For fanworks that “correct” canon events that are not liked by the fan(dom), such as fanworks where the Snap/Blip never happened, Tony never died, or whatever else that fandom seeks to correct through fanworks.

Day 10 | Favorite Creator(s): Spread the spotlight to specific creators whose fanworks you love.

Day 11 | Domestic: Fanworks involving the characters living everyday lives. Often involves marriage or children, but domestic fanworks don’t have to include that nor does domestic mean that Peter can’t have powers, since being Spider-Man is a normal part of his everyday life.

Day 12 | Angst: Fanworks that hit you in the feels by making you feel negative emotions, particularly saddness or fear.

Day 13 | No Spider-Man: Fanworks that depict Peter Parker as a normal human being without superpowers. Other characters can have superpowers, but Peter Parker cannot.

Day 14 | LGBT+: Fanworks that depict LGBT+ themes and/or characters such as Trans!Peter Parker or Bisexual!MJ. Those are just examples, so feel free to rec works that don’t fit those specific parameters as long as they are LGBT+ focused.

Day 15 | Underappreciated: Fanworks that are underappreciated, such as not having that much engagement from the fandom. I’ll let you determine what counts as underappreciated, but please don’t rec fanworks that have 1000 kudos and 50 comments. This day is about praising fanworks that get barely any praise.

Day 16 | Alternative Universe: Fanworks that alter elements of canon, such as College AUs, Coffee Shop AUs, Vampire AUs, Omegaverse AUs, Historical AUs, Soulmate AUs, and so, so, so many more.

Day 17 | Spider-Man 3: Fanworks that make you go, “this could be in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3,” whether it be fanart depicting an epic fight scene, a long fic plotting out a huge overarching narrative, a vid with a tight story, or whatever else you can think of.

Day 18 | One Shots: Fanworks, typically fanfiction but it can include other mediums such as comics, that are standalone stories contained within a single chapter.

Day 19 | Hurt/Comfort: Fanworks involving a character(s) being hurt either emotionally or physically and then being comforted by another character(s).

Day 20 | Self-Rec: Recommend a fanwork or fanworks that you created! Don’t be afraid to be proud of your work and I want everyone to shamelessly rec their fanworks that they’re proud of on this day.

Day 21 | Comic Elements: Fanworks that include elements from the Spider-Man comics that have yet to appear in the MCU, such as the Venom Symbiote or a reimagining of a classic scene/panel/storyline using the MCU’s version of the characters.

Day 22 | Art: A day to recommend your favorite pieces of fanart. This doesn’t just include drawn/painted art, but it can also include cosplay, sculptures, paper craft, and any other medium.

Day 23 | Missing Scene: Any fanwork that fills in a “gap” in the films and could reasonably be seen as canon compliant.

Day 24 | Five Things: A story structure that includes multiple scenes that are related to each other using a common theme. An example is “Five Time Peter & MJ Almost Kissed & The One Time They Did.” The story structure does not need to have exactly five and can have any number as long as it follows the typical structure.

Day 25 | Humor: Fanworks that are humorous and make you laugh.

Day 26 | Smut: Fanworks that depict sexual material of either a Mature or Explicit rating.

Day 27 | Drabble: Fanfics that are exactly one hundred words long, but for this day I’ll accept less words or slightly more. And I also would like to see other mediums for this category such as vids that are less than thirty seconds. Generally, just fanworks that are fairly short in length.

Day 28 | Mental Health: Fanworks that depict mental illness, mental disorders, or neurodivergent headcanons. Examples include, but are not limited to, ADHD, Autism, Panic Attacks, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, etc.

Day 29 | Meta: Essays or analysis discussing the characters and/or relationship in the context of its portrayal in canon or fandom.

Day 30 | New Fanwork: Fanworks that have only been recently posted. I won’t give an exact hard timeline for you to follow, but as a guideline I’d say it counts as new if it was posted in the past two months.

Day 31 | Free Day: Reccomend fanworks based on any theme (or no theme) that you want.

Greetings from Miraland! Love, the POPNikki Team

That’s all of us. All 30+*. This is the team that’s worked (for a lot of us daily) since May to brainstorm, draft, and bring life to this crazy vision-turned-project.

Now that we’re literally 30 days from Zine launch (and two weeks away from launching Site + our YouTube channel), I want to introduce you to everyone because POPNikki is not just the simple FanZine Project I started out asking fans to join. It’s since become a collective of like-minded creators, and don’t you think you’d like to meet all of us?

*NOTE: Our FanArt Team Co-Lead Kira is technically missing from this group shot, but she’s with us in spirit and despite a busy schedule WILL make an appearance in our Summer Zine after all! ^^ Also not pictured is Site Team’s periidote and IRL Team’s Luna-- also with us in spirit!

Team Leads

POPNikki is divided into three divisions and each has its own subdivs requiring, well, WORK. The following group of Contributors help me keep each sector running smoothly (including a Contributor named Lilly who you’ll meet in the next section!).

The Librarian: Editor-in-Chief of POPNikki Zine and the founder of this operation, I have a toe in every division if I really think about it. But my personal skillset lies in brainstorming, cheerleading, and editing, which is why I head up the FanFic Zine Team and Co-Lead FanVid with Sea. ^^ Follow my blog for LN Resources. I archive them neatly so we can find them all again later ^^

Clow: Site Team Co-Lead, Developer, and Zine Editor (read: my partner-in-crime), Clow is a great collaborator who can take a vision, no matter how messy and turn it somehow into exactly what you need + want. Clow’s creative but modern style (and way of thinking) is reflected in the Site she’s helped design (can’t wait for y’all to join and see! ^^). You’ll want to follow Clow’s blog for all sorts of LN related posts, my faves being the lovely Starry Corridor photos found from all over.

Yoko: Unfortunately Yoko is taking a break from Tumblr, but when Site opens, we’ll update with a way to reach her! Yoko is the other Site Team Co-Lead and Developer whose incredible patience and research skills have helped bring Site to fruition.

Ms. Loki: Ah, Loki... What can I say that you don’t already know? When I can’t find my head or my glasses (which often leads to me consistently uploading the wrong things), Ms. Loki is right there going above and beyond the call of IRL Team Co-Lead. Not only does she manage a group of Contributors (and I swear, most days, me!), but she also finds time to Contribute, herself! Look forward to her art and articles as she’s become a key part of our FanArt and IRL Teams. (And if you’re not already following for ALL OF THE LN THINGS... ^^ Ms. Loki is usually the OP!)

Val: FanArt Team Co-Lead Val has really had to step up this season due to an unexpected scheduling conflict. "Single-handedly” juggling a whole team of artists using a collaborative leadership style, Val has shown not only her skill as an artist but as a leader this term. Follow her art blog for a peek at her versatile art style or her personal blog to reciprocate the support she’s shown to POPNikki this Summer~

Sea: My FanVid Co-Lead and one of our three video editors, Sea is just amazing to work with. Perhaps it’s her eye for beauty (or the fact that she can find the beauty in everything), but every conversation ends in laughter and every problem finds a solution. She’s always ready to cheer our team on, so please do the same for her (and we’ll be sure to link you to her personal YouTube channel after Zine Launch!).

Dayan: IRL Team Co-Lead and Artist, Dayan’s ideas and participation have both played integral parts in the fruition of this project. Dayan almost bursts with creativity and an energy that really keeps you going. Did you know that in addition to her LN Blog, she also has another blog for her art? I’m such a fan of all our Contributors, but there’s something so lovely about Dayan’s style that I can’t help but share every post. I feel so lucky to have her on board, and y’all are lucky too because you won’t have to wait for Zine before seeing some of her work. She’s also been working on a very fun Site Feature that will meet you guys once we launch! ^^

*Kira: FanArt Team Co-Lead (and supposed to be on break for this issue, Kira did a few of the background illustrations for Zine articles I know you are going to LOVE! If you don’t follow her LN blog, you’re missing out on a wealth of .png and background resources.

Site + Social Media Contributors

Lilly: Despite a busy schedule offline this season, our Social Media Manager Lilly still managed to pull off a very special project, complete IRL and FanFic write ups, edit, and head the Social Media subdiv by some miracle over the past few months (thank you so much). Lilly’s eye for detail has been extremely valuable and so when you go to follow her LN blog, be sure to note how you’ll only be getting the good stuff over there ;) You may also get to chat with Lilly at some point if you follow us in her domain-- the POPNikki Tumblr (and soon, our other social media).

Red: Our IRL, Site, and Social Media Contributor, Red, has been such a gift to this project. In Fall, we can’t wait to show you the fun project he’s been working on, but in the meantime, look forward to his Game Guides. Are you counting down the minutes with us? Royce: Royce recently joined POPNikki but has hit the ground running. Now our go-to for Site graphics, we can’t wait to hear how you like the awesome visuals Royce has whipped up! Clark: Part of our Social Media subdiv and working on a super fun, super secret FanFic project for a future Zine edition (why yes we are thinking about Fall...), Clark’s been a supporter of this project from the get-go. Follow him for fun from a slew of different fandoms (Monster High meets LN, anyone? I’m just sayin’).

periidote: periidote is a Site Team Contributor who will be helping with Site FanPOP Features starting end of Summer/ early Fall! Follow periidote’s LN blog here and get ready for great content from her~

YouTube Contributors

Legs: My go-to video editor in a pinch (whether it’s for advice or for help or to make sense of this vision I had in a dream...), Legs always returns a product above and beyond expectations. July 18th, y’all. Be ready! And in the meantime, follow Legs, for game-related jargon (including but not limited to Love Nikki)

Haley: FanVid Team Contributor and YouTube Channel manager. Haley is always full of great ideas, but when YouTube opens, feel free to drop us comments with even more!

Brittany: FanVid Team + FanFic Team Contributor Brittany is also one who’s always brainstorming. We can’t wait for you to see her tutorials and meet her ideas in Zine when it drops this August!

LittleAvalonia: I’m very excited for what the future holds with an actress like LittleAvalonia on our team. Funny (and having fun), LittleAvalonia brings a new element to LN FanPOP that we can’t wait to share with you.

Witchy: IRL + FanVid Team Contributor, Witchy, is a gem in the POPNikki Contributor pool. Look forward to Halloween (feels so far, I know!) when we debut their sketch(es ^^) and articles. In the meantime, follow Witchy to check out their art and more.

Joltik: Our newest video editor thanks to her enthusiasm and helpfulness after our latest Open Call, Joltik is already hitting the ground running in her new role! Donsveertje: Donsveertje (known as Beetle to me) is a phenomenal artist who answered a POPNikki Open Call. Happy to help with any project when time allows (and actually working a few zines at the moment!), Beetle has great energy, ideas, and can really bring your vision to the page. The laughs are a blessed bonus. ^^

Fishbone: The more I work with Fishbone, the more I fall in love with her work. An artist who’s willing to try different things (no matter how crazy they sound) until they work, Fishbone is such a dedicated and positive team member. With like a million Tumblr accounts XD (follow them all here and here and here as well!).

ArtisticArmoury: Another Open Call gem, ArtisticArmoury has been so great to work with. Every part of the process is not only well done but also fun as we’ve been having a blast adding even more expression and visual color to the FanFic Feature he’s now a part of. Check out ArtisticArmoury’s art or personal blogs to get a sense of his work.

Inky: Also finding the time between a tight schedule, Inky has jumped into this project as an artist from an Open Call. You may recognize Inky as the artist of that awesome piece re: the doctor. But Inky has another, strictly LN blog that I hope you’re following because it is full of fun LN stuff (like important update infos but also MEMES y’all).

Zemiki: Zemiki is a Feature Artist in the POPNikki Zine Summer Issue. Already known for her great work, Zemiki’s providing several original pieces for fans to enjoy to accompany our second FanFic Feature! Get a feel for her style by following her art or personal blogs.

Astie: IRL Team Contributor Astie has an unstoppable energy that brings life and joy to the POPNikki Team. Look forward to the article Astie has prepared for y’all in Zine this Summer (while we work on finding the link to the Tumblr-- we’ll update you on Site after the launch! ^^).

Roulette: Roulette is such a hardworker for Zine I cannot. Contributing content to both IRL and FanFic Teams, Roulette writes articles and provides Spanish translations for our guides. Give her a follow! (EDITED TO UPDATE: her blog link! Here’s the best account to reach her at~)

Sophie: My writing buddy, I could honestly send all of the virtual hugs to Sophie. Working together on her FanFic Feature story has shown me both her dedication to the game and being a writer-- two of my favorite things in the whole wide world! XD We also share a love of tea (which is besides the point, but still). Megaera: After reading a fic by Meg re: Prehistory Lord, I knew she HAD to be a part of POPNikki’s FanFic Team this first issue. Fic Writer Tag Meme

Meep! Thanks for tagging me, @cinlat!!

I was given leeway to answer regarding art rather than writing, haha, which is probably a good thing since the only solid writing I’ve done outside of RP in maaany long years is my current derpy WIP and I’ve never considered getting an A03 account (though here’s me taking a peek right now).

What is your total word count on AO3 (or art count on your far too full computer)?

Ahaha. Well my current little fic is sitting at 19,740. I’m awfully proud of that effort so far!

As far as art goes... hrnnng. I could never tally a proper ‘total art count’, but let’s look at my Star Wars art folders specifically... mrgh. There is no easy way to sort/count these since my filing system is ridiculous and I have odd things all over the place, but at a very quick/rough guess, I’ve got some 650 odd drawings done specifically relating to Star Wars RP, dating back to our first home tabletop campaign. That’s NOT including all the frames done for the few derpy animation projects I’ve done which would... easily push it into the thousands, but I’m not travelling down that particular rabbit hole tonight. XD

How often do you write (or art)?

Easily every day I’m not at work, and then depending on my energy levels a lot of evenings I’ll get a bit of something done, even if it’s just a few lines or a spot of colour. Honestly you could probably work out my work schedule/holiday time out pretty perfectly based on my art posting/productivity, heh.

Do you have a routine for writing (or arting)?

Mmm. Anywhere/everywhere, which usually winds up being; most sketch work done on the couch with some sort of TV show/movie going on in the background, and colouring done at the computer between playing games, snippets of writing, lots of internet browsing (some of it actual useful reference stuff), liberal voice chatting and possibly also working on a sketch in my lap at the same damn time.

What are your favourite kinks/tropes/pairing?

Kinks:

UM. Okay I guess I can admit I’m a sucker for fluffy fluffy romance with all the love and sweetness going on? I don’t even know if that counts as a kink, I don’t know how to answer this otherwise. I also like werewolves.

Tropes:

‘I’m a monster’. I guess this counts more for the storytelling that inspires my art more than the art itself? But damn, give my character someone who considers themselves a monster- quite literally in the case for Jak, or more figuratively as was the case for Ahuska, and I am SOLD. The feelings will happen, and the feelings lead to the drawings.

Pairing:

Ahuska/Crow: Obviously this is, like, the overwhelming majority of where my head is at when it comes to couple stuff. And to think I’d gone and created a lil Mando Bothan with absolutely ZERO intent of pursuing a romance with her! Thank you, @humanrevolt , for changing that. :D

Jak/Wylluf: They don’t get a lot of screen time right now but damn, I do want to get back to their story one of these days! Jak was my main for a long long time, a Saga Edition tabletop character that I didn’t want to let go once the campaign ended, so my husband let us carry on with her and her mad scientist husband even when all else was over and done.

Ulfran/Lyrisal: So, not exactly a pairing, since @humanrevolt ‘s Lyrisal is very much attached to Nines and I don’t think Ulfran would make any moves even if she was single, but still. I love their history, their relationship, I love writing their interactions!

Do you have a favourite fic (or art) of yours?

Okay I definitely need to have more than 3/4 of a fic to answer this for writing. But for art... so hard to choose a single one. SO HARD. I am definitely still super fond of the little Christmas one I did last year though.

Your fic with the most kudos (or art with most likes, I guess)?

I feel like it’s that completely random werewolf I did last year? Yep- it’s currently beating that one bit of Moana fanart I did at 635 notes. Still weird to see that figure since honestly I still get excited to see notes hit double digits on any piece, haha.

Anything you don’t like about your writing (or art)?

Ehhh, all the usual things I’m sure. I’m super critical of my own stuff, and often get stuck in a rut of feeling like everything is the same, always the same. Sometimes I wish I could do my lineart digitally, and I know I... could, if I was willing to put in the time to practice?

Now something you do like?

NO THIS IS HARD I don’t know. I just like it when I manage to make something that makes me feel happy to look at. Better yet if it makes someone else happy to see it. Even better if those happy feelings are still there looking at the thing months down the track. That’s the whole point of it all, really, when it comes down to it, right?

All my old psych text books and notes are in storage so I don’t remember the exact terms but there is a concept in psychology that says if you’ve worked very hard or paid a lot of money for something (joining a club or frat for example) you have a harder time critiquing said thing. It’s because you’ll look like a damn fool if you’ve spent all this money or put forth all this effort just to hate it in the end.

I wonder if anyone has looking into it in terms of Video Games.

Like I’ve been getting more and more into video games lately and Video Games as a Media Form has been getting really interesting to me as far as Psychology In the Media.

And beware, under is just a really long thought piece on media and critique:

Music, Movies, Tv Shows, Books, Comic Books, either don’t cost a lot of money or don’t cost a lot of time as far as investments. Or both.

Music- You can hear a new song on the radio for free or through apps like Spotify or Pandora before investing money into it. And it only lasts less than 4 mins on average so you aren’t exactly investing a lot of time into a new song.

Movies- You can watch a new movie that comes out for as cheap as the cheapest theater in your area is. If I want to splurge on a new movie that I want to see, I can go to the big theater for $13 bucks but if I don’t give a crap either way, I’m dropping $3.50 for a matinee at the cheap seats. It’s an hour and a half of my time at most and I can’t even buy a good cup of coffee for that price. After the movie comes out and you’ve seen it in theaters you have rent the movie or buy it, for no more than $25 for most movies, including blue ray now a days.

Tv Shows- Other than the Cable bill, Tv is free and shows are plentiful. The only time investment is when you’ve watched a few seasons of a show and then it starts going downhill. I plan on watching every episode of Supernatural even though it’s hot garbage because I’d already invested 5 seasons into it before it went down hill (for me). I can understand why some people would have a hard time parting with it even hating it 12??? Seasons in. I can’t stand it and I’m still going to watch it.

Books- They take a lot of time as far as investment depending on how fast you read but books of all subjects are variable and if you buy books like I do (Thrift shop!) it’s a very cheap entertainment source. Even if you buy it full price, on average it’s about 12 bucks a book, more for hardcover. Book series though (*cough cough* Harry Potter *cough*) Can fall into the “This is actually a long investment” to the point where it becomes impossible to critique. Many people in my generation grew up with Harry Potter, it was a cultural phenomenon. It also took a very long time to get through the entire series because of time.

Comic books- Comic books are a bit more expensive (depending on what you are reading) and here is probably the closest to video game culture bubble. Comic book issues don’t release book sized editions like well, books. 30 or so pages per issue over the course of months. It can take you a year to wrap up a story line or more, (depending on the writer and the actual plot or just release dates). Comic issues can run a wide varitiy of prices which many not seem like a lot but some comics cost more than the movie cheap movie price I listed. They also may be printed in limited quantities? Or because the nature of comics (especially in the big name companies) the plots are so complicated, cross comic spanning and just down right hard to grasp sometimes that getting into comics is an intimidating venture.

For people who get into comics, are really into the decade long stories sometimes, it may not be an expensive hobby (or it can be if you make it so) but it is a laborious activity that requires a lot of time if you plan on getting invested in it. By the time you get to a point in a story where it’s highly offensive, you may find ways to excuse the problem because it’s harder to criticize something that’s you’ve spend so much time on.

But Video Games are the nexus of time investment and monetary investment.

Video Games require first an expensive system in order to play them. Unlike movies and music that can literally be played on any device that you own (with the exception of Blue Rays but even though multiple companies make Blue ray players) Video Games have to be played on the system they are made for. And over the past few decades, the variety of game systems have decreased to Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and PC. PC having the most variety as far as games but require a system that can handle the graphics of the new games and just general knowledge of computers to figure out if your computer can handle a game. This has people buying overpriced Alienware computers or other marketed Gaming Computers because they are considered “game ready”. This is a huge money investment for a lot of people, including having a decent TV to play these games on, or a monitor , ect ect.

(the only person I know who is an exception to this is my mom who bought a ps3 just to watch Netflix. But I worry about her act first think later thought process doesn’t count)

Then Video Games themselves cost a lot of money. Especially your big name AAA games. $40 and up is pretty standard. Smaller games and indie games tend to be a lot cheaper and they are honestly they saving grace for the video game industry because of that. They also release on PC but don’t require NASA level computers to play them a lot of the times.

I looked at my first play through of Dragon Age: Inquisition that I’ve been doing a completion route on and so far I’ve done 100+ hours on this play through alone. This doesn’t include the 6 other inquisitors I have with anywhere between 10 and 30 hours of play time on each of them. Just looking at the time I’ve spent between the entire series (Origins, 2 and Inquisition) I have over 400+ hours of time invested into this one game series.

And for someone who tends to have at least one Completionist run per game the website https://howlongtobeat.com/ has beating these three games at about 284 hours. But just beat them at BARE MIN, main story only – It would take 121 hours!!! That is a lot of time!

This doesn’t include the time I’ve spent non game time. (Fanart -fanfic, ect)

Fun part is: I fucking can’t stand Dragon Age 75% if the time. I could complain about that game series until the sun consumes this planet in a heat death. But I’ve invested so much time in character creation, headcanons, ect that I’m ready and waiting for new information about the next game!! I understand this bias, I understand that if I had to pick between Mass effect and Dragon Age (Mass Effect being a game I enjoy infinitely more Dragon Age) I’d pick Mass Effect every single day, I’m still going to give Bioware my fucking money and time in art and headcanons, and I don’t even feel bad about it.

I don’t feel bad critiquing it because I’m a Bad Fan ™ and I understand being able to still enjoy something but look at it with a critical eye. There are people who don’t understand this concept though and have absolutely invested more time than I have in just this one series and absolutely go through mental gymnastics to justify some of the absolutely disgusting things that exist in this game.

Video Games as a fuels allows this sort of blind loyalty. If you’ve invested that much time and money into even just one game (Still going dragon age) like Dragon Age 2, which is the shortest of the series, you are still spending more than most of the mediums up there. It’s very hard to hate something you’ve spent so much time and money on. Psychology tells us that.

There is a bright side for the future of video games and why I think the bubble of gamergate busted. With the rise of Let’s Play, people on youtube posting videos of cut scenes (I rely on these people a lot before I go out and buy a new expensive game), and just the general main streamness of video games, it’s harder for Video Games to be as closed off as they are.

And I’m not saying that this is an excuse, this is just a reason. You can, I am like this and a lot of people I know are, can consume media that is bad, call it out, regardless of how long or how much money they’ve spent on it. But I understand why it happens the other way around, because big video games have creature a culture around it that makes it above critique.
