This fic was created for the BKDK Unbirthday Party (Twitter) for prompt #G-0181: (Coffeeshop AU where Izuku accidentally sends katsuki (guest) to hospital after messing up the order submitted by Celestial)
Bakudeku one-shot. Coffee house AU
Ugh! Why’d the coffeehouse have to be so busy today of all days? It was as if the customers knew he’d stayed up late the night before and only managed three hours of sleep. Top it off with co-worker Denki calling out, and that left Izuku Midoriya alone with just one other employee who manned the food offerings.
Izuku wipes the sweat off his brow as he finishes one latte and side-eyes the clock in one swoop. Just one more hour to go until the next shift comes in. ‘Yosh! You can do this Izu! Then die at home curled in bed till the morning.’
He faces the next customer in line, screwing on the bright smile he was known for. “What can I get for you sir?”
Ruby eyes glare back at him. “Large mocha with a double shot of espresso.”
“One mocha double!” Izuku rings up the man’s total and quickly whips up the drink. His body was running on muscle memory at this point having made these drinks so many times before. A mocha was simple enough, chocolate, steamed milk, espresso, done. “Here you go sir.”
“Faster then, usual nerd.” The man grabs his drink and walks away to a nearby table.
‘Never fails,’ Izuku remarks as he moves onto the next customer. The blonde man loved making snide remarks, but he’s never said anything about it because he was also a regular. According to the other coffeehouse employees, blondie only came in when Izuku was working. ‘Probably likes picking on guys like me?’ And today was no different. He sat at a table reading a newspaper with his coffee, staying for thirty minutes or so. Then he repeats the processes the next day.
“Here you go ma’am, one cappuccino.”
Just as Izuku is handing off another drink, a sudden commotion stirs up in the dining area. He looks up to see blondie clutching his throat and surrounding customers panicking. “He can’t breathe!” Someone shouts. More words are thrown. Allergy, nuts, emergency! The baristas eyes blow wide open. Izuku screams at his coworker Uraraka to call for an ambulance and rushes over to the fallen man.
“H-Hold on mister!” Izuku does his best to calm the situation despite the white noise gathering in his eardrums. “Help is coming!”
“H-Haz—el... hazel—nut...” blondie gasps out. “Allerg...all—gic...”
Oh, fuck! Did he mix hazelnut instead of chocolate into the coffee?! “Oh my god,” the panic sets in. “Oh my god, I-I didn’t mean to! Please hold on sir!” If his stupid mistake kills this man, he’ll never forgive himself.
“F-Fucking nerd...”
Tears exploded from Izuku’s eyes, but all he could do was apologize over and over again as the man gasped and struggled to breathe. The blondes lips were taking on a bluish-purple color, hives breaking out along his skin, and his eyes rolling back.
“N-No, no stay awake sir! Stay awake!” He continues to shake the man by the shoulders as sirens resonate outside. Everything was a blur, just him and the customer with hushed conversations of concern all around them. “Please don’t die mister!”
Once the medics rush into the room, Izuku steps back to give them space. He knew procedures during an emergency was to clear the restaurant of customers and secure the cash register, but he couldn’t think straight. All he could do was watch helplessly as they load the man onto a gurney and whisk him away. Luckily, Uraraka had already taken control, phoned the manager, and set about following protocols.
After everything is secure, she tells him to go. “I’ll wait for the manager, so you go check on the customer and keep us informed.”
Like a mindless zombie, he manages a nod, clocks out, and sheds his apron.
“Hey, try not to be too hard on yourself. It was an honest mistake.”
“That might have killed a man.” More moisture pools in Izuku’s eyes. “I like him too... why’d it have to be him?”
Uraraka’s eyes soften. “Izu, just get going, okay?”
“O-Okay.”
The cab ride over to the hospital felt like a death march to meet his fate. All the life was sucked away, the scenery a kaleidoscope of muted colors as his mind raced through each moment of that afternoon. It was all his fault. Staying up late, being tired, rushing, rushing, rushing to keep up with the demands of a barista. Multi-tasking was supposed to be his forte, his pride in always getting the orders right and made quickly. But this time he’d screwed up in the worst way possible.
At the emergency room, the intake person waves him off to the side to wait. The doctors were still working to stabilize blondie, so all he could do was sit there and hope the man came out of the allergic shock. It was a nerve wracking wait that Izuku spent fighting against every horrible outcome. Can you go to jail for something like this? If the man dies, is that manslaughter?! Oh, who was he kidding. He deserved to be punished. Minimally his boss should fire him for being reckless. ‘Please don’t die...’
“Sir, you can go in now. He’s in room 14.” Technically, since he wasn’t family or even a friend, the hospital shouldn’t have let him visit. But because they had no other contacts for the man, and Izuku was clearly upset and shaken over the incident, they must have taken pity on him. Blondie was alive and unconscious. The medications were flushing his body of the toxins and countering the allergic reaction, but he would probably have to stay in the hospital overnight for observations.
When Izuku enters the small room, he sees the man tucked tightly under a blanket. His eyes are closed and IV lines trail to a machine that’s monitoring vital signs. The tears pool again at the horrible sight. Beeps from the machine echo in the silent room as constant reminders of the gravity of the situation.
“Mister...” he sits beside the man’s bed and takes a limp hand in his own. “I’m so sorry.” His head hangs down, “please wake up.”
A whole year had gone by since the first-time blondie had started frequenting the coffeehouse. The man always tipped and always made some kind of comment. Rarely any nice ones, but he’d grown used to it and over time, Izuku wasn’t sure when it’d started, but there came a point in time that he waited and looked forward to each visit.
It wasn’t uncommon to have cute customers come in that the baristas ogled over. Dating customers wasn’t forbidden, just frowned upon because they didn’t want drama to arise. So, Izuku kept his growing crush under wraps. Not that he felt he’d had a chance anyway. Mister blondie looked like a power player. Tall, trim, fit nicely in a tailored suit, while he was just a small, geeky guy with messy green hair and a face full of freckles. He didn’t even know if the man was gay. Oh, his co-workers thought he was. They were convinced his routine coffee trips were too conveniently made during Izuku’s shift alone.
All the tears and turmoil took its toll on the exhausted barista. The four hours of sleep catching up with Izuku before he even knows it. Hours pass by as fitful dreams torture him. Flashbacks of the coffeehouse, of happy times with his co-workers. There he is Izu, your knight in shining business suit! He turns around only to find a red-eyed dragon glaring down at him. A loud roar, screams echoing around them. Panic, fear sweeping through as customers and employees scramble away. The dragon roars, loud, reverberating chills to his core. Izuku’s scream catches in his throat as the beast picks him up with a clawed hand. It’s punishment time nerd!
“But I didn’t mean it!” Izuku whimpers, “please forgive me! I’d never want to hurt you!”
“Oi, if you’re gonna be noisy go away nerd.”
Awaken by the voice and a squeeze of his hand, the groggy barista raises his head off the bed. “M-mister?” The dream fades away to be replaced by a hospital room and redeyes narrowed at him. “Mister you’re back!” Moisture fills Izuku’s eyes. “I’m so glad you’re back!”
“Yeah, yeah, didn’t know you were trying to get rid of me so badly.”
“What?! I-I didn’t— it was an accident mister, I swear!”
“Stop calling me mister. I got a name nerd, use it.”
“M-Mister Bakugou. Please forgive me. I didn’t mean for this to happen to you. I-It’s all my fault but you’re one of our best customers and we wouldn’t want to lose you. I’ll resign if it makes you feel better, just please do not punish the cafe.”
“Tch, if you leave, I won’t go back cause you’re the only reason I go there.”
“Huh? But why?”
“I changed my mind, you're not a nerd, you’re an idiot. Nerds are smart and you are completely clueless.” Bakugou groans and closes his eyes. “Or I’m the idiot for liking you. Either way, it was just an allergic reaction so don’t worry too m...” he feels the hand slip from his and quickly opens his eyes expecting to see the man leaving. “Midoriya?” But instead he sees one leg still on the chair and the rest of Izuku’s body collapsed on the ground. “Yup, I’m the idiot.”
Bakugou gets off his bed and despite being a little tired from the treatment, manages to pull the smaller male off the floor, rolling him onto the bed. He then slides back on and pulls him close, so he doesn’t fall off. These hospital beds weren’t built for two people, but he made it work. ‘This little mouse fits perfectly in my arms.’
He didn’t like admitting it, but that’s what attracted him to Izuku in the first place. Seeing Izuku’s bubbly personality at the coffeehouse. Always bright and cheerful despite his grumpy comments. The fact the man was hard working was a plus. And yes, because he was small and adorable.
As the heir and VP to a family corporation, Bakugou had to be tough and serious, but what he saw in Izuku was a chance for the opposite at least in his personal life. Frankly, the man reminded him of his father. His mom was clearly the one in control, but because his father was her balance who kept the woman grounded. Bakugou wanted that too. So far, his search had turned up nothing until the day he walked into the Plus Ultra Coffee & Tea.
“Am dreaming? Like...” Izuku mumbles. “Yes,” he curls his body in to hide his blushing face. “You, too.”
‘Does this guy always mumble in his sleep?’ Bakugou shakes Izuku gently. “Time to wake up mouse. We can’t stay in the emergency room forever.”
Izuku pops up. Emergency room?! His eyes flare wide. “W-Why?! Oh no, did I fall asleep?!” He looks around. ‘Why am I in the bed?!’ “Mister Bakugou! S-Sorry!” He scrambles off, “I’m so sorry!”
“Don’t be, I put you there nerd. Now come on,” Bakugou holds out a hand, “I’ll take you home.”

My Heart Like a Firework - Part 1
@livrever said: What about Luka drives through a puddle splashing/soaking Marinette and he stops to apologize/takes her home to change
@justknitstuff said: Luka works in a music store and Marinette ducks into his shop to escape a downpour of rain, they start talking and while he’s showing her around to pass the time she starts getting hit with inspiration for guitar string jewelry
This was supposed to be a quick little distraction and it turned into an entire thing and I’m not even sure if it’s anything good, but I hope it’s cute and you guys like it. Stay tuned (ha) for part 2.
Luka glanced up at the sky as he pedaled to work. He wasn’t sure what had possessed his mom to buy the music shop, but he actually kind of liked working in it. Unfortunately the metro stop nearest the boat was shut down today, and the weather was not looking so great for biking. It had been raining off and on for three days, and from the looks of the sky it wasn’t done yet. He was just hoping to get to work before the sky opened up again.
Luka was so focused on getting there quickly that he forgot something very important. As he turned the corner onto the street where their shop was located, he plunged right into a huge puddle of water that had accumulated at the blocked storm drain there. For a moment, there was chaos, and not the kind he enjoyed. The bike sent a huge wave up, someone shrieked, and the wheels skidded and went haywire. Luka somehow managed to pull off some weird maneuver between stopping the bike and jumping off of it, and ended up on his feet in the middle of the tiny lake.
“Great,” he muttered, looking down at his pants, which were now wet to the knee.
“You can say that again,” sighed a second voice, and Luka looked down.  There was a dark-haired young lady sitting in the puddle-lake, and while he was wet from the knees down, she was thoroughly soaked. It took only a moment to realize that the shriek he’d heard when he hit the puddle must have been her. He wasn’t sure how she’d ended up in it, but things happened when one got unexpectedly hit with a wave of ice cold dirty water.
“Oh, my—I am so sorry.” Luka cringed as he reached down to offer his hands to the young woman. “I should have expected that damn lake to be there after last night, but my mind was elsewhere, and—honestly, I’m so sorry, miss. Are you hurt?”
“It’s okay, it was an accident,” she sighed. “And no, just the usual bumps and bruises.” She took his hands and he pulled her to her feet, and she gasped as her flats filled with cold water.
“Damn,” he muttered, “Hold on.” He quickly bent, slipping an arm under her knees and lifting her up out of the puddle. She gasped again as she fell against his chest as he lifted her. “Sorry, let me just get you out of this,” he said, carrying her to the edge of the puddle and setting her on the sidewalk. “Here, hold onto me,” he said as he knelt down. “Lift up your foot.” She did, leaning on his shoulders as he slipped her shoe off and emptied it of muck. Not much of an improvement but it was better than being waterlogged. Luka helped her put it back on and did the same for the other shoe.
“I’ll get your things,” he said, getting to his feet and looking back to the bag laying half submerged. “I hope there wasn’t anything important in there—“
“It’s waterproof,” she said absently, trying to squeeze some of the water out of her skirt. “I’m kind of a magnet for this kind of thing honestly, so I’ve learned to be careful.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m glad you’re taking precautions,” Luka said, stepping carefully out into the puddle. “I’d feel awful if I ruined all your things.” At least his boots kept out the water, as long as he didn’t slosh too much. He waded carefully over to her bag and his bike. Fortunately he hadn’t been carrying anything important in the basket. “I wish the city would fix that stupid drain,” he muttered as he tried to get back out without losing anything. “I really am so sorry Miss, I hope I’m not making you late for...anything...“ He stopped short as he finally really looked at her.
Oh hell, he thought numbly as she looked back at him.  Her makeup was running, but the black marks didn’t do anything to diminish the sweet prettiness of her face or the clear blue of her stunning eyes.
“Marinette,” she said, smiling even though she was cold and wet and dirty, and that smile would have been enough to make his knees weak by itself. “Just Marinette. I was just on my way home, so it’s fine. Like I said, stuff like this happens to me all the time. You’ve been a lot nicer about it than most people, actually, um...sir.”
“Luka,” he told her on autopilot, feeling a stupid smile spread over his face. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Marinette, even if—“
The sky chose that moment to open up and unleash a downpour on their heads.
Luka swore. He grabbed Marinette’s wrist in one hand and his bike in the other. “This way.” It was an awkward run into the back alley behind the shop. Luka leaned his bike against the wall and fumbled out his keys, unlocking the back door and holding it wide for Marinette to run in ahead of him. He darted in after her.
Unfortunately for both of them, the lights were off and someone had left a large crate a few feet inside the door. Marinette hit it first with a yelp, but Luka was too close behind her to stop, so Marinette fell over it and Luka promptly fell over her.
“Shit,” he hissed, scrambling for a secure place to put his hands so he could push himself up off the poor girl he was probably crushing. “This day just gets better and better.”
“Tell me about it,” Marinette grumbled under him.
“Hang on, just let me—” Luka managed to lever himself off her and find his footing. “There. Sorry. Again. Don’t go anywhere, let me get the lights first.” Luka stumbled around for a moment, swearing under his breath. “Mom, you and I are going to have words about leaving shit in front of doorways,” he muttered as he finally found the light switch. “‘From chaos comes creation’” he complained in a falsetto. “More like a busted—“ he turned to find Marinette staring at him from where she knelt on the floor. “Sorry,” he said sheepishly.
She giggled, covering her mouth. “It’s okay.” Luka stepped around the clutter to offer her a hand up for the second time today.
“You’re freezing,” he frowned, noticing her shiver.
“Oh, I’m—well, yeah,” she admitted, folding her arms around herself.
“Let’s get you something dry to put on,” Luka said, leading her toward the front of the shop.
There was a small display of t-shirts tucked in one corner of the store.
“I don’t think I have anything small enough for you,” he said, thumbing through the shirts on the rack. “Our women’s order got put on back order, but hopefully you can find something that’ll work.” He selected a shirt in his own size and then turned and gestured her towards the rack. “Hope you like Jagged Stone. Help yourself.”
Marinette burst out laughing when she saw the shirt he was holding, and Luka raised his eyebrows. “Sorry,” she giggled. “It’s just, I um…” she blushed and Luka’s eyebrows went higher. “I work for Jagged Stone sometimes,” she said shyly, gesturing at the shirt. “I actually designed this.” She pointed to a small set of initials set in an inconspicuous part of the design. “That’s me.”
“That...is seriously cool,” Luka said wonderingly, and Marinette blushed further. She took a tentative step around Luka and he moved quickly out of her way.
Luka gratefully peeled off his wet shirt. There was no help for his wet pants, but since they were mostly only wet from the knees down and his feet were mostly dry, he’d survive. He made a mental note to start keeping a change of clothes here just in case. There was a squeak behind him as he put his arms in the dry shirt. Startled, he looked back, but all he saw was Marinette’s rigid back as she gripped the shirt rack.
“Everything okay?” he asked as he finished putting the dry shirt on.
“Fine!” Marinette said quickly, grabbing a shirt off the rack. “Um, is there somewhere I can—“
“Oh, yeah, sorry, the bathroom’s right through there,” Luka pointed. “Don’t worry, I promise it’s clean.”
“Thanks,” Marinette smiled.
“Don’t mention it,” Luka said, picking up the wet shirt from where he’d dropped it on the floor. “It’s the least I could do.” As Marinette went to the public bathroom, he took his wet shirt to the employee bathroom in the back, hanging it over the sink to dry.
A thought occurred to him and he opened the cabinet over the sink, poking through the bottles of Juleka’s crap stacked in there.
Luka went back out to the front and knocked on the bathroom door. “Marinette?”
He heard her squeak, and then say, “Um, yes?”
“I’m leaving some makeup remover and tissues outside the door if you want to use it. My sister practically keeps a whole cosmetic counter in the back. Do you need anything else?”
“Oh! Okay. Um, thanks, I can’t think of anything else. Oh, maybe a bag for my clothes if you have one?”
“Yeah, no problem,” Luka smiled. “I’ll hang it on the doorknob. He fetched one of the larger bags they had for merchandise and hung it on the bathroom door. Then he got a mop and cleaned the floor where they had tracked muddy water, and went about the process of opening the shop. It was a little bit late but he doubted his mother would care considering the circumstances. If she even noticed.
He glanced back automatically when he heard the bathroom door open and did a double-take, grateful that she had turned around to shut the door so she didn’t see the way his jaw dropped.
She’d picked one of the larger sizes and belted the t-shirt around her waist to wear it like a dress so she could shed her wet skirt and stockings. It was a little short but not scandalous; girls regularly came in the shop wearing micro-minis that made the t-shirt dress look absolutely modest by comparison. Still, she had really nice legs for such a petite woman, and the collar was much too wide for her, exposing more of her neck and shoulders than the blouse she’d been wearing. She’d taken her hair out of the tails it had been in, and it hung in wet tendrils around her shoulders.
He was still staring when she turned around, though he’d managed to close his mouth at least.
“Is it too short?” Marinette asked, tugging at the hem self-consciously, and Luka coughed.
“No, it looks good,” he said. “Just be careful how you bend over and you’ll be fine.” God, why was he thinking about that. “You’re welcome to hang out here until the storm stops. Oh, I can put those on the heat register to dry off if you want,” he added, gesturing at the shoes dangling from her fingers. Her legs and feet were bare.
“Please,” she smiled, handing them over. Luka took them behind the counter and did as he promised.
“Make yourself at home,” he told Marinette. “Looks like it’ll be a slow day anyway.” He nodded toward the front windows, which were being pelted by sheets of rain every time the wind gusted. “Can’t imagine many people coming out in that. Well,” he amended, “I would, if I needed new strings badly enough, but still.”
Marinette was taking things out of her bag, laying them on the counter. She paused to examine a notebook, and breathed a sigh of relief when she found it was undamaged. She took out a set of colored pencils and some other supplies, and then her phone. “What do you do when there’s no one in the shop?”
“Lots of things,” Luka shrugged. “Inventory, restocking. I’ll probably open that crate we tripped over and get whatever’s in it out on the shelves so that we can get rid of it.” He rolled his eyes. “Mom’ll never move it if I don’t do something about it.”
Marinette giggled. “Your mom’s the manager?”
“She’s the owner, actually, but yeah, when she’s here, she’s technically the manager,” Luka said, opening the counter and going behind it. “So, yeah, make yourself at home, relax. Try an instrument if you want,” he grinned, gesturing towards the demo guitars.
“Oh, no, I’d be a disaster,” she giggled, “But thanks. I’m good, I’ll just—uh…” she glanced around, and then turned around and hopped up to sit on the counter, crossing her legs and balancing her notebook across them. “This is fine, if it’s okay.”
“Sure,” Luka agreed, eyes flicking to her legs again in spite of himself. He turned away quickly. “I’ll be back in a minute.”
When he came back Marinette was writing, or, no—maybe drawing in her notebook. He watched her for a moment, but she looked totally focused, so Luka didn’t say anything, just went on to work, and quickly fell into the routine and his own thoughts.
Luka hummed along to the tune playing in his head as he stacked the boxes on the shelf. “And those eyes can hypnotize,” he sang, “Was designed to blow my mind—“
He stopped at the giggle behind him, and turned to grin at Marinette. “Sorry,” he said, “Habit. I forgot you were here.”
“I don’t mind,” Marinette giggled. “Your voice is nice.” She glanced around at the shop, eyes lingering on the guitars hanging on the display wall. “Do you play?”
Luka grinned slowly. “I do. You want to hear?”
“Oh,” she said, shoulders curling in. “That’s okay, you’re busy, you’re working.”
Luka chuckled. “I’ll be right back.”
He went in the back to get the guitar he kept here, slinging it on. He winked at Marinette as he went by her to the amp they had put for the demo instruments. He plugged in and began to tune up. “What kind of music do you like?” he asked as he worked.
“Me?” She sounded surprised and he glanced up to see Marinette tuck a lock of hair behind her ear. “Oh, I...well, I’m not really cool or anything, I just like whatever...it’s probably stupid, I’m sure everything I like is really mainstream…”
“What’s wrong with that?” Luka smiled at her. He checked the length of his amp cord and then went to lean on the counter next to her. “People like different things,” he continued, as she continued to look uncertain. “And mainstream stuff wouldn’t be mainstream if it didn’t speak to people in some way. I mean, a song doesn’t have to be edgy and full of symbolism and dissecting societal wrongs to be entertaining. Music can do all that, sure, but that doesn’t mean the songs that are just catchy or fun are somehow less worthy. I like a little bit of everything myself. Almost every genre has something to offer, if you’re open-minded enough to look for it. And if you’re not, that’s okay, too. You like what you like, Marinette. Don’t be ashamed of it. Certainly not for my sake.” He continued tuning, watching her out of the corner of his eye.
“Oh,” Marinette said, and he thought he saw a hint of color on her cheeks. “Well, I like Jagged Stone and Clara Nightingale…”
“Jagged’s my favorite singer,” Luka said, strumming experimentally. “There we go.” He looked up. “So how’d you end up working for him, anyway? You’re a graphic designer?”
“I’m a freelance fashion designer, actually,” Marinette admitted, setting her notebook aside and gripping the edge of the counter. “I met him sort of by accident, while he was staying at my classmate’s hotel and—well, it’s a long story, but I ended up designing the sunglasses he wears whenever he’s in Paris. I’m sure you know the ones.” She rolled her eyes. “They’re so ostentatious.”
“They are,” Luka chuckled. “But they work for him.”
“Well, he loved them, and then when he was ready to drop his next album, he asked me to design it, and I’ve been doing work off and on for him ever since.”
“That is seriously awesome,” Luka shook his head. “You’re an amazing person, Marinette.”
“I was just lucky,” Marinette said.
Luka smiled down at the guitar, setting his fingers to the frets, taking a centering breath. “Luck only makes opportunities,” he said as he began to play. “It takes something else to capitalize on those opportunities.” He grinned up at her. “I still think you’re pretty cool. And, well. Pretty and cool.” He continued to riff, letting his head bob along with the music, letting the rhythm of the rain on the windows inspire him. He felt Marinette begin to sway beside him. He worked in her bright smile, and the sharp staccato of his own heart.
“Wow,” she said, when he let it end. “That was amazing.”
Luka felt a bit of heat in his cheeks. “It’s my passion,” he shrugged. “I’ve been playing my whole life. Since I was in diapers, practically.” He switched his tune to a familiar song, one he thought Marinette might recognize.
She must have, because she started singing along, but it came out a little squeaky. “Ugh, sorry, that was terrible, I don’t know why I—”
“No, no, don’t be embarrassed, it was just the wrong key for you. Try this.” He began playing again, the same melody, but in a different key. He nodded at Marinette encouragingly and she sang, a little shyly.
“If today’s the day I die, lay me down under the lights, let me fall in love, let me save a life, and let me lose my voice, singing all my favorite songs…” she trailed off, blushing but smiling, and Luka picked it up, singing the words until she was brave enough to join in again.
“No one, no one lives forever, we will be remembered for what we do right now,” they sang together, and Luka turned to face her. She seemed to grow braver, and they sang the chorus together. Luka winked at her when they sang, “Let me kiss a stranger,” but that seemed to be too much for her, as she promptly forgot the words and spluttered, red-faced. Luka could hardly sing for laughing and their little concert stalled for a moment.
“I’m sorry,” Luka chuckled. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
Marinete sniffed haughtily and looked away, running her fingers through her hair. Luka followed the motion with his eyes, but backed off a little. He strummed and sang, “Cause we’re all just kids who grew up way too fast,” and though she still wouldn’t look at him, she joined in, “Yeah the good die young but the great will always last,” and by the end of the song she was smiling again.
“That was fun, Marinette,” he said, leaning on the counter next to her and looking up into her face. “Thank you.”
“I should be thanking you,” Marinette said, and she reached out to move a stray strand of hair off his forehead. Luka’s heartbeat sped up, but Marinette snatched her hand back. “Oh, sorry, I don’t know what I was—um…”
“I didn’t mind,” Luka said, unconsciously leaning a little closer.
Marinette fidgeted uncomfortably, and Luka snapped out of it like he’d been doused with cold water (again), straightening up. He cleared his throat and put his back to the counter again, and went back to improvising, though he couldn’t stop smiling. He glanced at the rain and couldn’t decide if he hoped it passed soon or not. Marinette might be killing him by inches but if he was honest, he was loving every minute of it.

I wait patiently in my chair checking my notes on this week's modeling session. In pure boredom I start to do that leg thing that people do when they need to get out extra energy. Before I look up though I can feel warm calloused hands covering my eyes. "Guess who?" I chuckle and say "Hm, well I suppose my only guess would a certain man with wings who is late to his modeling session" he laughs and says "aw come on, I'm not late you're just always early!" He takes his hands off my eyes and says "I'd never be late for a modeling gig with you" he gives one of his famous smug smirks and I roll my eyes.
I lead him back to the hair washing chair and continue to wash his hair. "So how’s hero work?” He sighs and says “Stressful, I guess but it’s nothing I can’t handle” he says it with a cocky smirk but I can’t help but feel sad for him. Hero work certainly does look stressful and it’s a shame that the hero commission can’t give the heroes just a little bit more free time. Although I guess it’s not like villains are just going to give them some days off to chill and just relax. His wings make it a bit difficult for him to lay down in the chair so he usually just sheds all his feather into a pile and just leaves them there, until he uses them again. It’s kind of weird to just have hawks feathers all over the place, but I’ve gotten used to it.
Once I'm done with washing Hawks's hair I blow dry and brush it. After I'm done with perfectly brushing it though he just has to run his hands through it. "H-hey! What are you doing that for!" I rush over and he chuckles. "Aw come on, I was itchy! It's not my fault that you buy high-class shampoo. Besides I like having you brush my hair" I sweat drop and go back to styling his hair until it's back to its fluffy, clean, and neat self.
Next is makeup. I don't have to add too much makeup to Hawks since he already has flawless skin, but fixing his bird eyeliner usually helps the aesthetic. It wasn't until the first time I tried wiping the little triangles under his eyes that I found out that that was part of him. We laughed it off anyways, but I still felt embarrassed inside and curios on how he just happened to be born with eyeliner on. When applying the eyeliner I have to be careful to not to touch Hawks too much, since he's ticklish and last time I did that his wings ruffled and spread and knocked over the chairs.
I can almost hear his breathing when I'm applying the makeup, maybe scared of getting ticklish again or just from staying still for a period of time. After I'm done he relaxes again and he follows me to his changing room. When he's in the changing room I check my phone to see any text notifications from the date I had last night. Although it seems as though I'm cursed to be forced alone, forever.
When Hawks comes out he notices my slightly saddened expression. "Hey chickadee, whats got you down?" I look up at him surprised and try to put a smile back on. "Oh nothing, just was spacing out that's all" He nods but I can tell he doesn't believe me. When we're around less people he asks again. "Seriously though, are you okay?" I sigh "I don't know, I guess right now my love life is slowly dying, although not like it was strong in the first place" Hawks looks a little taken a back by what I just said and a little sad too.
"I mean, all my friends have boyfriends. I'm just a twenty two year old who hasn't had one in what feels like forever" I exhale and look back up at him. "I'm sorry, I really shouldn't be talking to you like this. Super unprofessional of me let's do the photo shoot now" he was hesitant to move or talk back first but Hawks eventually followed me to the shoot. "So anyway I was thinking about matching the tones of your outfits to compliment the backdrops to really get a whole aesthetic going. And anyway I was also thinking about- Hawks?" I snap once trying to regain his attention. "Hawks?" Snapping gains got his attention and he turned to me.
"Hm? Oh! Sorry spaced out there for a bit" we continued the shoot without any further problems with him and his tendencies. We actually got it down fairly quick. "Anyway we'll reschedule for next time?" He nodded "yup just as usual" I go to exit and then I hear him mumble "look forward to seeing you again" I turn around making sure I heard him correctly. "Hm?" He looked a bit a flustered and just said "ah, I meant- I mean, um Bye!"
"Uh, yeah sure. Bye!" I exit the building a bit confused but eventually shrugged it off. "Just bird stuff right?" No matter the cause I go back to my cozy studio loft and sigh. "It's only Four O clock, but I still feel tired" maybe I should make something to eat. After I made something to eat I sat down on my couch and started sketching new ideas for different fashion and jewelry lines. I also brought a bag of popcorn with me. Eventually I put my hand in the bag and nothing was left in there except kernels. Looking around I realize the sun has already started to set. "Did I really just spend three hours non-stop drawing?" I shrug and decide to get to bed.

"Aw come on {•Y/N•}! You need to put yourself out there. Here it's a free app, just get it" I sigh listening to my friend, Alex's lecture about why I should get a dating app. "Listen here you've been single for way to long girl friend. It's time you go get yourself a man!" "Alex I'm honestly fine, it's sweet that you're doing this for me, but maybe I'm just not destined to meet someone" I take a sip of my drink and look down at my purse.
"Hey can I borrow your phone I want to know what the weather is tomorrow"
"don't you have your's?"
"Yeah but I left it in the car"
I reluctantly gave her my phone and before I knew it she was giggling. "What?" I look over and realize she already downloaded the app!
"A-Alex!" She puts her hand up just to drop and give me one of those "Oh please" looks and showed me my phone back. "Look hun you already got a match" I look down at my phone and notice that I did get a match. "Hold on, really?" I scroll though the person's name and it read 'Keigo Takahiro' he didn't have a picture but it seemed like none of these profiles did. "Hey why aren't their any photos here?"
"This app is made so people don't focus on looks and focus more on the person. "But then you could be talking to a creepy old man!" She just shrugs "you could be doing that too on any other app". Wait so you put my name as {•N/N•} {•M/L/N•}?" She nodded. "I mean you're kind of well known. Since your always around Hawks it's probably better if people don't read your profile and just say 'omg it's that one girl who always around hawks'"."I suppose" although I wasn't really listening I was scrolling through his profile. I didn't find anything that really stood out to me. "Hm his favourite food is chicken, he likes heights, he has a stable job. Maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all" alex smiles "see? I told you so, soon enough you'll be out here with kids" I roll my eyes and laugh "oh please no let's talk about marriage before that"

"I don't know Miruko, I just want a girlfriend" she looks at me weirdly and says "don't look at me I already got myself a girlfriend, and trust me I don't think I'm going to be needing no man anytime soon" We're lying in a parking lot because apparently I crash landed there and Miruko came because she thought there were carrots involved. I sigh "I didn't say you, Although you know {•L/N•}?" she jumps up and says "you mean your fashion designer?" I nod "I think I like her" after a few minutes of silence she says "dude, I know. You tell me this everyday" Then it looks like she gotan idea "hey! You should get a dating app!" I blink "what why?" "To get your mind off {•L/N•}! Since your obviously not going to make a move anytime soon" I think for a while "but what if I don't want to get the app?" She shrugs and says "then have fun complaining to me that you want a girlfriend everyday even though you found a girl but are too scared to make a move. You should just put your self out there. You'll be surprised" I look down "I don't know Miruko I think I'll pass" she then goes off to leave "suit yourself with loneliness!"
"Wait!" I shout back already regretting what I’m about to say. She turns back "yeah?" Defeatedly I pull my phone out of my pocket and hold it towards her. "Can you at least help me set up the account" she laughs and grabs my phone. "But wait, what if people only like me because I'm a pro hero and the publicity they would gain?" She looks up at me "just change your last name, and this app doesn't allow you to add a photo" I lean over "why?" She chomps into a carrot and says "something to do with love isn't about how you look or whatever, but I made your account, just fill out some of the other stuff"
"Hold on, am I going to be cat fishing people?"
"Course not! Just change your last name to your mom's last name!"
"Oh, okay"
Once we get my profile ready I hit done and wait a while. Then my phone buzzes "hey look you got a match!" I look on my phone to see '{•N/N•} {•M/L/N•}' I scroll through her profile and think to myself what's the worst that could happen right? “Hey, I gotta go, but have fun with your online dating!” I wave goodbye and check my phone again. It’s not my ideal way to finding a partner, but besides, this is only to get my mind off of {•L/N•}. It’s unprofessional of me to have feelings towards my employee, I mean I’m technically her boss and yet I have these, these.... feelings! That I can’t get rid of, and I just, I just want to.. I don’t know what I want to do with my feelings.
Miruko was right, I really do need to get my mind off her. She is just my fashion designer. That’s it, nothing else. Just my really attractive, kind, and nice employee. If there is some god out there,I hope they will at least send me a sign! Then my phone pinged.
||{•L/N•}||
Hey you free in two weeks? I was thinking maybe Wednesday at 9am
||Hawks||
Yeah why? Taking me out on a date lol
Could this be it? A sign from the gods? Maybe a push that {•L/N•} and I are meant to be?
||{•L/N•}||
To discuss your next fashion line silly :)
||Hawks||
Oh Okay
This girl is going to be the death of me, and hopefully {•M/L/N•} will be able to breathe me back to life.

Essays in Existentialism: Plus One

“I’m not going. This is stupid,” Lexa lamented as she sipped her coffee. She slumped back in her chair and stared at her fingers picking at the holder anxiously.
“You have to go.”
“I don’t, and I’m not. It was a courtesy invitation, and that’s all.”
“Which is exactly why you have to go,” Anya explained, already annoyed at her sister's antics and moping. “You have to show her that you moved on and it didn’t take forever for you to get over her. Costia needs to see that you got someone nicer and better and smarter and hotter.”
“I’m fine. I’m over her. I don’t have to go to prove anything. And,” she twisted up her face at the realization, “I haven’t found anyone all of those things. I haven’t even tried.”
The café filled with people grabbing some sustenance while the two sat at their normal table. For the better part of the conversation, Lexa regretted mentioning that she’d gotten her ex’s wedding invitation. She also hated that now she would have to listen to her sister’s opinions on the matter.
“That’s my point! You haven’t even looked! Costia cheated on you, broke your heart, stole four years of your life, and then asked to be friends after it was all over,” she recited. “Now she invites you to her wedding and you’re supposed to go and be happy? No way.”
“We’re friends. It was the nice thing to do, but I probably won’t go.”
“You have to go and show her what’s what.”
“What does that even mean?” Lexa shook her head and sipped her coffee as she let her gaze wander to the window and the city outside.
The coffee shop was bustling, filled with people reading and writing and talking and laughing, but it did nothing to make Lexa feel any better about the invitation. She refused to look at her sister because she knew exactly the look she was getting.
“You find yourself a hot date and make her see that you weren’t even bothered at all.”
“That’s stupid.”
“It’s brilliant.”
“It’s petty.”
“Think about it,” Anya said excitedly. “You go to the wedding, you take a smoking hot lady, and you end it, once and for all. You prove that you aren’t even  thinking about Costia.”
“It’s over. It’s been over for years.”
“All you do is work.”
“I run my own business,” Lexa sighed, shaking her head. “I want to be successful. And I am over her. I’ve dated.”
All that Anya could do was shake her head and give a heavy groan of complaint. She was never a fan of Costia, and she was certainly more than happy to see it over, though never happy to see how gutted it made her sister.
There wasn’t a doubt that Lexa loved Costia. She’d been her first real love. There’d been girlfriends before, but something always came up, always ended it before six months. Something about Costia was different, and for the life of her Anya never knew why, and her sister could never explain it.
And while it was true that Lexa was busy, her sister never believed much else. She didn’t buy the other girls and going out and being over Costia. Someone over their ex wouldn’t look so glum about a wedding invitation.
“You have to show her. Just think about it.”
“I never would have imagined you’d be advocating me going to Costia’s wedding.”
“I’m advocating you getting laid and rubbing it in her face.”
“Okay, are you done?” Lexa laughed and hoped all at once.
From the table, she looked back over the café while her workers went about their jobs, not really needing her to do their jobs. She didn’t care, she still liked to work normal hours. Unfortunately she hired competent people and so she wasn’t needed and couldn’t be saved from her sister.
“Think about it.”
Lexa shook her head and sighed, hoping it was enough.
The problem was that Lexa did think about it.
She thought about it all night as she locked up the doors in her café. She let it bother her when she met a few friends out for drinks. She even let it follow her as she told them about her sister’s plan, to which they eagerly agreed, much to her own disappointment and shaming.
The problem was that Lexa thought about it all night.
She thought about it after a few glasses of beer. She thought about it as her brain got a little dizzy and her fingers moved on her keyboard.
Wanted: Beautiful, intelligent, kind, caring, smart, funny woman to show off to my ex at her wedding. Trip to wine country included... Honestly, the other stuff doesn’t matter, just be super hot.
With a grin, she emailed it to her sister, asking if she should post it somewhere.
Still, the thought nagged at her until she opened her ex’s profile. The pictures didn’t hurt her, didn’t bother her. It was like looking at a memory. In reality, she didn’t know Costia anymore, and that was alright. In the years apart, Lexa had grown her little place into a business, and she survived and mended. She just wasn’t sure she was ready for anything with someone else. She got good at being alone and wounded.
With a half drunk revelation about her place in life that she hoped she would forget, Lexa fell asleep and vowed to never think about Costia’s wedding again.
Lexa was mildly successful. After about a week, her sister didn’t bring it up, and she forgot to return the RSVP. It faded away to nothing, and she continued her normal life just as she had since Costia got kicked out and left for good.
“I’ve found her,” Anya sprinted into the coffee shop, nearly panting and half skidding past the counter.
From the booth in the back where she worked on the books, Lexa adjusted her glasses as she looked up and watched her sister frantically look around the counter for her. She perked up when she met Lexa’s eyes and continued to weave back through the tables, shedding a scarf and bag in the process.
“I’ve found your date!”
“I don’t need a date,” Lexa furrowed, forgetting about the stupid wedding. “I have three employees on vacation next week. I’m fine. I’ve told you--”
“Shh. Hush. Shh-shh-shhut your face,” she shook her head and tried to catch her breath still. “I ran the whole way here. I haven’t ran anywhere, ever.”
“You could have texted--”
“Shhh!”
With a roll of her eyes, Lexa waited patiently for her sister. She had bills to pay and she had stuff to get done for the day. After their mom left, Anya grew up almost overnight. The tender age of twelve and suddenly making sure Lexa was okay. It was a hard habit to break. Even fifteen years later.
“We don’t have much time, but through a series of events, I may have forwarded your email to most of my company, meaning all of my company,” she explained, holding up her hand as her sister moved to interrupt and complain. “But I did find you a date.”
“You… You…” Lexa squinted and stared at her sister incredulously. Her mouth wanted to move, but she was too mortified. “You WHAT?”
It came out louder that Lexa normally sounded, which surprised her sister slightly. A few people mingling in the coffee shop looked over, though she didn’t notice. Instead, she just stared at Anya and waited to find the proper words. They’d never come though. She knew it. Her brain was too frazzled.
“Just be calm. Sit up straight. Fix your hair. Be charming,” her sister insisted.
“Anya, I can’t possibly--”
The words stalled as she trailed off slowly when she saw a beautiful girl appear in her coffee shop. But as much as she was distracted, she found her senses again and shook away the thought before giving her sister another glare.
“I’m not doing this,” she hissed, ignoring Anya’s self-satisfied grin.
“Yes you are. You need this.”
“You’re not pimping me out to a strang--”
“Yes I am.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Too late.”
“Am I interrupting?” the girl in question appeared, all too close for Lexa’s comfort.
“No!” Anya said, much too loudly. “No, no, not at all.” With a pointed look, she found her smile to put the stranger at ease. “Clarke, I’d like you to meet my sister, Lexa.”
“Hi,” the blonde smiled
Lexa gaped for a second, pursing her lips shut as she gulped. It was more of a problem than she’d expected. How a girl like that answered a stupid email, as lost on Lexa. But her sister nudged her shoulder and she came back around.
“Hello,” she managed stiffly, earning another nudge. “I-- Um. Could I get you a coffee?”
“Sit, sit,” Anya interrupted. “I’ll go get them for you both. Take your time. Get to know each other. Work it out. I know where everything is. Lexa owns this place. Pretty good coffee. What can I get you, Clarke?”
“What do you recommend?” she asked, turning to the owner with a natural smile on her face. Lexa could make out the hint of a dimple on the blonde’s cheek and that was trouble.
“Matcha cappuccino,” Lexa decided. “We just got some new leaves in from one of my friends in Kyoto.”
“Two of those, coming right up,” her sister clapped her hands. “You two sit and get acquainted.”
In a second, she was gone, weaving through the tables toward the counter, leaving the two strangers standing there, awkwardly looking back and forth at each other until Lexa held out her hand and motioned for Clarke to take the chair her sister already offered. Awkwardly, she gave a weary smile and tried to figure out where to start.
From the get go, Lexa could see that Clarke was essentially the opposite of her ex. Where Costia was tall and slender, Clarke was shorter and curvy. Where there was dark, curly hair, no was blonde waves. Gone were brown eyes and in their place was blue ones; bluer than any blue had a right to be. And the smile. Clarke had a constant smile, always right there and eager and warm.
Lexa blushed when she realized she’d met Clarke’s eyes again after staring at her lips, her cheeks growing pink with the blush of being found out.
“I’m really sorry my sister’s pulling you into this mess,” Lexa finally began, all the words bubbling up from her chest and spilling out of her mouth. “I’m severely embarrassed that it got forwarded. It was just a joke, and I don’t even want to go, but I also don’t think it’s fair to ask someone to preten--”
“Easy there, tiger,” Clarke chuckled as Lexa spun out. “No one dragged me into it. I volunteered.”
“But… why?”
“I’d had a few glasses of wine when I responded, to be honest,” she shrugged. “And then Anya seemed so grateful and relieved. I’m also kind of excited for an adventure. If I wrote a bucket list, I’d like to think crashing an ex’s wedding just to spite them would be on it.”
“Let me just get this straight. You’d willingly go and pretend to be my girlfriend to make my ex mad, just for fun?”
“Makes me sound a bit psychotic when you put it like that,” she frowned before perking back up. “But yeah. Why not? Should be some good karma in there somewhere.”
Lexa stared at the stranger, torn between amazement at the good intentions on display and the absolute absurdity of it all. She couldn’t just go with someone she just met to Costia’s fancy, Napa wedding. That would be bad. And wrong. Wrong and bad. That would be crazy. And yet, it was suddenly an option.
“You’re really sure about this, aren’t you?” Lexa finally asked.
“I’m a fairly good fake date. If you’d like references, you can ask my high school boyfriend. I was his beard for two years for family functions.”
“Ah, so you’re a professional fake girlfriend?”
“I think that’s an escort-in-training, to be precise,” Clarke decided before seeing Lexa’s face fall slightly. “I’m kidding, obviously. That was a joke.”
“Thank goodness.”
Before either could say anything else, two cups appeared with frothy green and white foam were slid on the table, right on top of Lexa’s work and papers and notebook. She looked between the two of them and smiled expectantly.
“You two seem like you’re talking. Going well?” Anya hoped.
The hope in her tone was evident from the get go, and Lexa didn't really know what to say, so she just shrugged and looked at Clarke who did much the same thing.
“It’s alright,” Lexa finally tried, earning a nod from the blonde across the table.
“Good, good,” she smiled. “I’m just going to head back to work and let you two crazy kids iron out the details. I’m sure this is going to be great.”
Once more, Anya gave her sister a pointed look and communicated a few things to her through her face before giving Clarke a smile, resuming the happy front. To her credit, Lexa didn’t completely die of embarrassment just yet.
“So, you run this place?” Clarke asked, blowing on her drink before taking a sip.
“Own it.”
“Wow. No wonder you look so stressed. I can’t imagine the pressure.”
“I get by alright.”
For a moment, she didn’t have much else to say, but Lexa felt like she should. There was this weird feeling of wanting to say things to put the girl across her at ease, and she really wasn’t sure how.
“This is good.”
“Thank you,” Lexa smiled weakly as she quickly processed the information that came from the amiable stranger. “So you’re serious about this, aren’t you?”
From across the table, Clarke carefully put down the mug of delicious coffee with care and from beneath her lashes, in an absolutely stunning kind of look that was enough to make Lexa’s mouth go instantly dry, she met her eyes and she let her lip quirk up on the corner slowly and just enough.
“Lexa, there are moments when you just have to be someone’s fake girlfriend. It’s a service to the world.”
“To the world, huh?”
“I had a pretty gnarly break up a few months ago. My friends say I need to get out. This seems like a low-pressure introduction, and for some reason, hiding behind an act of charity makes it easier for me to put myself out there.”
With a sigh and another sip of her cup, Lexa looked around the coffee shop and mulled. She was someone who mulled. She took time to decide things. Never one to be rash or impetuous, unless apparently a lot of wine was involved, Lexa tried to turn it around from all sides.
Clarke just sipped and smiled, careful to wipe the foam that got caught on her lips.
“We don’t have to touch or be super personal. I won’t ask you do to something you aren’t comfortable with. This is strictly pretend, or even it’s like friends, hanging out.”
“Well, you’re a sweet fake girlfriend,” Clarke beamed.
“I’m not doing this to get my ex back or to sleep with you or anything like that. Anya thinks that showing up with a beautiful girl would just be a nice way to turn the page.”
“I kind of agree. Your sister wants you to show your ex that you’ve moved on and she missed out. I think that’s fair.”
“I’m over her. I am. I think that’s why this feels weird.”
“You don’t want to seem like you’re trying too hard when you’re actually okay,” Clarke nodded, understanding perfectly. “But you also are still kind of hurt and don’t want to go alone because that would seem weird.”
“Super weird, right?”
Clarke just chuckled and nodded.
“It’s kind of weird being this honest with a complete stranger.”
“Yeah, or with anyone,” Lexa mumbled slightly to herself.
“If you want, you can think it over. You don’t have to decide. I think it’s just nice to know that you have the option to have someone to hang out with and make it less weird at your ex’s wedding.”
The nice girl nodded politely and finished her coffee. There was a kind of pink in her cheeks that made her eyes seem clearer.
“You’re really serious?”
“I am,” Clarke nodded. “You seem relatively normal minus this whole thing.”
In a move, Clarke reached across the table and picked up a pen before snagging a napkin. She jotted down her number and slid it across the table.
“I still can’t believe you’re serious,” Lexa shook her head despite seeing the number.
“Me neither. Just let me know. I should head back to work,” she offered, standing up from the table finally. “It was nice to meet you.”
“It was nice to meet you.”
Lexa stood as well, though the moment she did, she regret it and was unsure why. Instead, she just remained and somehow stuck her hand out to shake as if it were an interview. Nice enough, Clarke smiled and shook her hand before heading back toward the entrance and tossing a wave over her shoulder.
It wasn’t until Clarke was gone that Lexa sat back down and picked up the napkin tenderly. She smiled slightly at the whirlwind that just happened. She wasn’t ever that honest, and she was never that vulnerable, but two minutes with a pretty girl and she was confessing it all.
“Where did she go? What did you do?” Anya worried, sitting quickly.
“I didn’t do anything. I can’t believe you did this though. She was nice and seemed normal and you--”
“I found you a wedding date, if you didn’t scare her off.”
“I have to think about it.”
“What is there to think about? I hand-delivered a hot blonde who is just weird enough to accept your drunken offer for a date to your ex’s wedding.”
“I am still not sure I’m going,” Lexa shook her head.
Carefully, she folded the napkin and slid it in the pocket of her shirt.
Her sister  rolled her eyes and groaned.
“You’re impossible.”
For the entirety of the evening, well after the coffee shop was closed and Lexa was back in her own place, the weight of the napkin tucked into her shirt pocket weighed heavily upon her chest. She refused to look at it to confirm the numbers and the slopes and curves of Clarke’s name just above it.
But like a little thought worm that burrowed deep into her brain, she couldn’t reach it to evict it. The notion existed within her and she couldn’t escape it.
Once again, Lexa opened up her ex’s website and perused the pictures. There was a distinct lack of connection there anymore, and yet the book wasn’t shut. Clarke was right-- Lexa needed to go there and make sure. She had to feel the disconnect in person. She had to free herself of this nagging need to feel something. And Clarke had the qualifications for it. She was pretty and funny and sympathetic to a weirdo’s weird request.
After another lap of pacing through her house, Lexa stood still as a statue in her living room before tugging the napkin out and dialing the number.
“Hello?” Clarke greeted on the sixth right, right before Lexa was prepared to chalk it up to a loss.
“Clarke? It’s Lexa. Lexa Woods. Anya’s sister. We met earlier at my coffee shop. About the, er-- the um-- wedding?”
It all came out so quick that her brain was even catching up quick enough to be embarrassed for the incoherence.
“Ah, yes. I remember.”
There was some amusement in her voice and that did not make it any easier.
“Would you go with me to my ex’s wedding?” Lexa blurted. “I think my sister might be right.”
“Don’t tell her that.”
“I was going to ask you the same thing.”
“So you’re asking for a smokeshow and arm candy to show off and help with closure?”
“Yeah, but I’m kind of okay with you hanging out with me. You have a pretty good grip on what I’m feeling.”
“I would love to be your fake girlfriend, but I have one condition.”
“Oh God,” Lexa goraned, flopping down on her couch as the embarrassment caught up with her and she knew enough to be nervous.
“I get to make up our origin story.”
“Sold!” she barked. “I don’t want to think about anything.”
“Perfect. Should we go over the details?”
“I’ll email you the reservations, and of course I’ll book your plane ticket.”
“How chivalrous of you, darling,” Clarke teased.
There was a moment of quiet before Lexa took a deep breath.
“Thank you for doing this. It means a lot to me, a complete stranger.”
“I get a paid-for vacation and I love dancing at weddings. This works out for both of us.”
“Whatever you say, Clarke.”

( < Back to part 1 /< Back to part 7 )
Part 8 - Unattended
The truck had carried him further than Seven had dared to hope it would by the time it exited the freeway half an hour later. He peered carefully out from under the tarp after donning his backpack once more, and was relieved to see no one else around, no doubt thanks to the hour, which meant there was no one but the driver to witness the quick exit he made from the trailer. He kept low and ducked behind the limited cover provided by a light post before peering back at the truck to see if the driver had, in fact, spotted him.
Luckily, the night seemed to be wearing on the human, and they were more occupied with stifling a yawn than noticing a rogue android appearing from the rear of their vehicle.
Seven watched the truck pull away as the light turned green before pushing to his feet and straightening the straps of his bag on his shoulders. The vehicle made a left into the dark, and the android went the opposite direction, cutting across a dimly lit parking lot to the next street over. The ride Seven had hitched had gotten him a good ways towards the nearest Greyhound station, but he still had a long walk ahead of him.
Seven walked into the wee hours of the morning, opting to avoid taking any official, trackable transportation in favor of staying off the grid on his way to the bus station. It would have taken a human longer, but being as he didn't need to stop to rest the along way, the android made good time.
Before entering, he cased the station from the shadows of an alley across the street, watching people come and go until he determined, as well as he could, that there wasn't anyone particularly suspicious within the building. The station itself did have security cameras, he realized as he stepped inside, but it took little more than a thought for him to hack into their simple, low tech system and put the feed on a loop that a casual security guard was unlikely to notice.
He acquired a bus ticket to New York with little issue, though Seven had a brief moment of worry that it might look suspicious buying one at such an hour, and in cash to boot. Fortunately, the tired looking human employee seemed incapable of caring less about what anyone else was doing so long as it wasn't making their job any harder, and said nothing more than the bare minimum needed to complete the transaction.
That done, Seven stepped aside and considered his options for a moment. There were hours to burn before his bus left, and while he could probably sit around the terminal unbothered until then, the thought of sticking in one place for so long made the android feel... antsy. Remaining still left him open to being noticed, and yet he couldn’t go far from the station either, and wandering the streets aimlessly provided its own level of risk.
Realizing that standing about was likely to attract attention, Seven shed his backpack and took a seat along the wall. The chairs would no doubt have been uncomfortable for a human, hard, plastic, and possessing inconveniently placed arm rests as they did, but the android didn’t notice as he examined the room from behind the dark lenses of his sunglasses.
The bus station was a large one, and there were at least a dozen people there, some of whom appeared to be traveling with an android. To a one, all of the humans appeared tired, annoyed, or at least vaguely uncomfortable as they waited around for their buses to leave, and Seven couldn’t blame them. There was something distinctly unwelcoming about the station that the android couldn’t quite put a finger on; an almost dirty feeling despite the fact that everything at least appeared quite clean.
Another, more important, observation Seven made was the fact that almost every human had their attention either on one of the muted televisions scattered around the place, or on their phone. The android’s brow furrowed at this as his gaze drifted across the room. Eight of the twelve humans around him were actively looking at their phones, and the rest at least checked them occasionally, causing Seven to come to a new conclusion.
If he was going to blend in, he was going to need a phone of his own.
Sure, he didn’t technically need one; advanced as his system was, he could access wireless and cellular networks with a thought, after all. Watching the humans around the station, however, Seven had to acknowledge that his complete lack of one would seem strange to the outside observer in this day and age.
Seven closed his eyes and sank down in his chair a little until his head rested against the wall as he cradled his bag loosely against him to keep someone from running off with it, then considered his mission to-do list again. After a moment, he zeroed in on one point in particular.
Bullet point three: Find a disguise that would allow him to blend in with the human population.
Below that he added a few new sub-points:
Acquire cell phone
Acquire further clothing as possible
Synthetic as he was, Seven didn’t have to worry about his own physiology dirtying the clothes he had acquired, but that didn’t mean the world around him wouldn’t. Not to mention the fact that wearing nice slacks with a hoodie and sunglasses was a bit of a strange look. His shoes were also very good quality, and considering he was probably going to need to lay low in some of the less savory parts of New York City when he got there, the last thing he needed was to get jumped for his footwear.
A quick internet search revealed that there was a Goodwill within reasonable walking distance, though it wouldn’t be open again for some time yet, along with anywhere nearby he might acquire a cheap phone. Plan once again in place, Seven set himself an internal alarm, then went into sleep mode to save power, though put his proximity sensors on high alert so he would wake if anyone strayed too close for comfort.
He ‘woke’ once before his alarm went off when a rogue toddler strayed from her parent’s side and into his personal bubble, bringing him rocketing back to active consciousness faster than most could blink, though an outside observer wouldn’t have been able to tell just by looking. Seven didn’t so much as twitch until he registered who the ‘intruder’ was, at which point he raised one eyebrow at the child, who proceeded to make a beeline for his side.
The android watched her as she proceeded to climb, with a great deal of effort and grunting, up onto the seat next to his then sat with a look of great satisfaction. The child pushed some stray strands of hair back from her face with one small hand, then turned and looked at him with a brilliant smile that was missing a few teeth.
“Hi!” she proclaimed.
Seven blinked. “Hello,” he said after a moment, then looked around for the child’s parent in hope that they might even then be coming to claim her. Seeing no one moving in his direction, he asked the child. “Where’s your mom?”
The little girl shrugged, a large motion that ended with her hands up by her head.
Great. “How about your dad?” he hazarded hopefully and pushed his sunglasses up the bridge of his nose as he straightened some in his seat. The action drew the girl’s attention to his face and without warning, she leaned forward with one sticky looking hand as though to grab his glasses. Seven immediately leaned back out of her reach. “Please don’t,” he said. It occurred to him that he could simply get up and walk away from the child, but on the other hand, his morality program signaled that ‘leaving a child unattended’ was not acceptable behavior in a human.
So what exactly was this child’s parent doing, then?
It didn’t matter his human relations programming chimed in, it simply ‘wasn’t done’, even though he had no actual responsibility to the child in question.
The little girl pouted at his reticence and asked, “Why?”
“Because I need them.”
“Why?”
“Because the light hurts my eyes.”
“Why?”
Seven squinted at the child from behind the sunglasses in question, who almost seemed to be repeating herself arbitrarily by that point. “I doubt you’d understand if I explained,” he said archly.
“Why?” she asked, blinking up at him with big, bright eyes. She was far too awake considering the hour, he decided.
The android sighed and sagged back down in his seat once more, resigning himself to playing along for the time being. “Because you’re a child with, no doubt, limited comprehension of bio-” he hesitated before finishing with ‘components’. Yes, she was only a child, but children, his programming told him, often repeated things they overheard, even if they didn’t actually comprehend it. “-logy. Biology.”
“Oh,” she replied, which made Seven heave a sigh of relief. “What’s bialahgy?”
“Biology,” he corrected automatically.
“Biahlowgy,” the child hazarded, brow furrowed in concentration.
Seven quirked a brow and leaned in a little. “Bi-ohl-oh-gee,” he repeated slowly for her benefit.
The little girl watched him closely as he spoke, then repeated “Bi-ology.”
“Good job, kid,” Seven said with a upward quirk of his lips, and she grinned.
“What’s biology?”
Moment of victory short lived, the android sighed again and eventually replied, “It’s a kind of science.”
“Oh. My daddy does science!” the girl said proudly, then reached into one of her pockets and produced a jolly rancher.
“Is your daddy here?” Seven asked quickly, latching onto the subject like a man to a lifeline even as the girl scrunched up her face at the candy in her hand, then proceeded to offer it to him.
“I don’t like green ones,” she said simply, still holding it out towards Seven, who looked at it for a moment, then took it from her.
“Why?” he asked her.
“They’re gross.”
Seven’s mouth twisted into a wry smile, “So you’re giving me the gross one, huh?”
“Yep,” the child said nonchalantly as she rummaged in her pocket a second time and came up with what was apparently a more acceptable flavor, then unwrapped it and put it in her mouth. The android huffed lightly, then did the same with the ‘gross’ flavor she had pressed upon him, and was pleased to find that it wasn’t really gross at all.
Sharp movement across the room drew Seven’s attention as a man stood up abruptly and began looking around, bewildered. Not seeing what he was looking for, he bent over and picked up two bags, one not unlike the android’s own, and another, small and bright pink.
Ah.
Seven rolled the jolly rancher around his mouth, then leaned over and pointed towards the increasingly frantic man. “Is that your dad?”
The little girl looked up and saw who he was pointing at, then smiled. “Yep!”
“How about we go see him? I think he’s worried,” the android suggested, then got to his feet and slung his own bag over his shoulder.
The child seemed to consider this, then finally nodded and said, “Okay,” before sliding off the seat she’d commandeered.
Before Seven could even take a step in the right direction, he felt a small hand grab his own, making him look down in surprise at the sudden contact. He was still wearing his gloves, but her little fingers were warm around his own, though luckily, not as sticky as they had first appeared.
“Okay,” he said as his system shifted gears to this new development. Reflexively, he lightly gripped her hand in turn, then lead the child towards her father. The man glanced up as Seven approached, and the look of relief that washed over his haggard features almost made the android pause mid-stride.
“Emily!”
“Hi, daddy!” the girl said brightly, the distress she had clearly caused her father going right over her head even as the man swept her up in his arms and gave her a squeeze that made her squeak in complaint.
“Thank you so much, I’m so sorry if she bothered you,” the man said with a grateful, embarrassed smile over his daughter’s head as he looked at Seven. “I swear I only drifted off for a minute,” he said, sounding just as exhausted as he looked.
Seven’s first impulse was to point out that his daughter had been with him for more than a single minute, but he checked the urge and instead, said, “Don’t worry about it,” then left it at that. He turned and went back to his seat, and as he settled in again, the android glanced in their direction to see the girl looking at him. She waved, and after a moment’s hesitation, he returned the gesture.

So I have “A Year in the Life” on the brain again, and because I am in Hermione mode, here’s another really long essay on the revival revolving around the little-discussed fourth main storyline.
READ PART 1: How Luke and Lorelai have a far healthier relationship in AYTIL than in the original series
And, yes, there were four main storylines in AYITL. I love how each of them addresses something different:
Lorelai's storyline has to deal with everything in her life changing, and she is finding that she is stuck in time. Her father has died. Her best friend has left the business they started together. Her longest-serving employee wants to leave. Her daughter is drifting. Her mother is throwing every mistake she ever made in her face. Everything is happening so fast, and she can't quite keep up, and it's terrifying her. By the end of the revival, Lorelai has learned how to move forward with her life.
Emily's storyline deals with the changes in her life after Richard's death, of how to start living alone - truly living alone - after 50 years of marriage. She has to deal with her relationship with Lorelai in a way she could avoid before, because she had Richard to fall back on in regarding her opinions about her daughter. Emily learns throughout the year to become independent and learn to live for herself.
Rory's storyline deals with drifting and the displacement a lot of Millennials have in the world. Life wasn't what was promised her in high school, and through a combination of her own choices and the changing industry, her chosen career has left her behind. Rory has to find her identity all over again, and you see her stumbling through life as she comes to terms with it. This is the one storyline that's left open when everything is said and done.
But there’s that fourth, because there were four people listed in the opening credits after all, and this storyline is so subtle and so entangled with Lorelai and Emily's that you don't realize it for what it is until the very end of the revival, and that's Luke's storyline. His storyline deals with the opposite of what everyone else does, and that's the fear of getting left behind.
It's such an interesting storyline, because it picks up a subtle thread that's woven throughout the original series and tugs on it. You don't even really realize it at first, because unlike the storylines for the the three girls, Luke's doesn't start until "Spring" when Emily informs him about the trust set up in his name.
There has been some criticism of the discussion he and Lorelai have over Michel in "Spring," and about how he snaps at her for not letting Michel push her around. It's the type of behavior he displayed during season 6 that made fans bristle, and it has the same root cause. Why do things have to change? Why can't you be happy with what you have?
LUKE: How have you peaked? The place has been booked solid since you opened.
LORELAI: But it's so small. Just ten rooms and no suites, no mini-fridge and no room to grow.
LUKE: You don't need to grow.
LORELAI: Tell him.
LUKE: Why does everything need to grow? If something's good, keep it the same.
LORELAI: Yeah, but I kinda get what he's saying
LUKE: No, you don't need more. [Snapping]
LORELAI: Okay.
This sort of behavior is actually pretty unusual for a guy who constantly encouraged Lorelai from the very beginning of the series to grow. Luke was one of her very first supporters regarding the Dragonfly and repeatedly told her she is capable of branching out from the Independence Inn and running her own business. He even put $30K of his own money behind that belief before they were a couple. And he has been super proud of her achievements, go insofar as to order back issues of the magazine the Dragonfly was featured in so he could get familiar with the publication. As we saw in "Winter" with Rory's "New Yorker" article, this is an aspect of his personality that hasn't changed over the past nine years.
So why is he balking now?
Part of it is the tendency for Michel to push Lorelai around, and the fact that everyone around Lorelai is forcing her to question her own decisions and this is the breaking point for Luke. He's seen what Emily's constant second-guessing of her choices have done to her, and Michel piling on top of that isn't helping. As he pointed out, Michel has been guilt tripping Lorelai over one thing or another for 20 years. His next sentence was to immediately apologize for snapping, but he's feeling pretty protective at this point. I don't think he meant it in a mean way. Previous times Luke has made similar statements, he's walked them back pretty quickly - such as his protests over the Durham Group wanting to purchase the Dragonfly back in season 5. Back then, his response was largely the same as this: an initial snap judgment, some time to process things, then revisits it from a more rational standpoint. Really, this has been a character trait going all the way back to the beginning of the series.
But here in "Spring," this conversation serves another purpose - especially given its placement in the episode. In Broadway, you tend to have a piece of music where the major players state their desires. In "Hamilton," Alexander Hamilton does this during "My Shot." He doesn't want to throw his away his shot to change the world. Most people's "I want" songs are toward the beginning of the show. However, Aaron Burr's desires are cloaked until well into the second act of the musical. That's when we finally find out that Burr wants to be in the room where it happens. He wants to be part of these history-making decisions rather than remaining on the sidelines.
In "A Year in the Life," this discussion about Michel in the second act of this revival is really Luke's "I want" statement. He wants everything to stay the same, because life for him is good. This is established in "Winter" and why this storyline didn't start there. He and Lorelai are stable and happy, which shows in their relentless bantering and bedtime rollicking. He's the super proud dad, the one rescuing everyone when Kirk's car breaks down, the one providing support for Lorelai at Richard's funeral and when she realizes she's going to therapy with her mother. He's devoted to both Rory and April, as seen by the menu placement of Rory's article and taking several hours (and three dictionaries) to decipher April's letters. This has always been him at his best, and it's about to change.
"If something's good, keep it the same." And this is where we pick up his journey, because the next major scene that Luke has is the one where Emily calls his cell phone and specifically invites him to dinner to tell him about the trust Richard left him, and then we're off to the races.
One thing that the original series subtly points out is that everyone Luke has ever loved or cared for deeply has left him - be it through circumstances out of his control, their own need to grow, or his mistakes involving those people: His mom died when he was young. His dad died of cancer when he was in his 20s. Liz bailed on him, presumably when he was dealing with his sick dad. Rachel came back and left again and again. Anna left and didn't think he was worth telling about his own kid. Nicole bailed when she realized he wasn't all into their relationship. Lorelai left him because of their mistakes regarding April and Christopher. Jess chose his birth father and California over a stable life in Stars Hollow. Rory and April left home and made their own lives in the world.
You have someone who, at the age of roughly 50, is convinced that he will always be left behind, that he isn't worthy enough to stay for. Luke has severe abandonment issues. Yeah, Lorelai and Emily weren't the only ones who needed therapy. It can be argued that out of the four members of the main cast, Luke is the one who needs therapy the most but never gets it - even though part of him recognized that need all the way back in season 4 with the self-help book.
Now you have Richard reviving Luke's insecurities from beyond the grave thanks to the trust. No matter that it's established Luke has a decent amount of money on his own - enough to offer Lorelai a $15K loan out of pocket for termite repairs, to immediately write out a $30K check for the Dragonfly, to drop $100K on a building without any sort of financial issues. He was able to afford renovations to the diner and apartment twice without any sort of financial issue, and helped pay for renovations on the Crap Shack twice (season 6 and at some point between "Bon Voyage" and "Winter".) That really nice stove now in their kitchen isn't cheap by a long shot, and I doubt Lorelai was the one to pick it out or spend the money on it. He's floating the bill for April's education at MIT, and while I'm sure she had scholarships, it's not exactly cheap.
But despite all of that, Richard is claiming through that trust that Luke still isn't doing enough to provide for Lorelai. Don't get me wrong, I think by the time of Richard's death, there is a certain amount of trust and affection between Luke and the Gilmores. Richard included him on the actuary table to begin with, and Emily called Luke a member of the family. Emily is affectionate toward him at the funeral, and while there is some awkwardness, there isn't a ton. His first instinct at Friday Night Dinner is to hug Emily, which speaks to a lot about his character growth there - that the guy who could barely hug Rory in the early seasons of the original series has shed enough of his armor to more easily show physical affection. Yes, Emily tells the therapist that he doesn't often go to FND, but this is also Emily - who has an established pattern of telling people they're not doing enough when they've done all they can. Luke could have gone to every single FND for years and Emily would still claim that he barely shows. I don't think he went as often as Lorelai, but I would wager he went probably once a month - just enough to be familiar with the house since he was wandering about doing stress home repairs at the funeral, but not with Richard's inner sanctuary (as he mentioned to Emily he's only been in there one other time).
Now Luke gets dragged into this real estate scheme and really doesn't protest it. Part of it is knowing that Lorelai and Emily are having issues, and he doesn't want to make things worse. But, deep down, part of him thinks that Richard is right - he isn't doing enough for Lorelai. And that seems to be confirmed in his mind when Lorelai starts pulling away from him. She's lying about therapy, and while they aren't the huge lies she expressed back in season 5, it's still lying. And that just adds to his unvoiced fear that Lorelai will leave eventually him behind. His response? To clam up about the trust. Piling onto all of this is Lorelai’s new belief (no thanks to Emily) that Luke isn’t satisfied with his life, though he made it very clear in “Winter” that he was.
In "A Year In the Life," Lorelai never considered leaving him. It wasn't an option on the table from her perspective. That was all coming from him. Yes, she second-guesses how she treated him, and that her own selfishness led to him having a life he didn't want - hence the surrogacy subplot and their fight in the diner in "Summer" - but she never thought of leaving him. Even at the very beginning of "Fall," when she's babbling to his voicemail, her thoughts are of getting herself straightened out and coming back home. Contrast how Lorelai treats Luke at the beginning of "Fall" versus "Partings." She was going out of her way to avoid him in that episode until their ultimate confrontation that ended the engagement. When she's on the hiking trip in "Fall," she leaves rambling voicemail messages and defends him to the strangers she's hiking with. It's not the actions of someone planning to bail.
As I wrote a couple months ago, "The Wild trip was never about Lorelai figuring out if she was going to end the relationship. It’s Lorelai finding herself so she can deal with all the emotional crap thrown at her in the past year. She goes when she does because she realizes that she’s fighting with her daughter and that if things keep going the way they are, she could very well permanently damage her relationship with Luke."
But Luke doesn't see that, because there is no precedence in his life for this sort of thing. When he sees people growing emotionally, he knows they will walk away from him.
LUKE: You know, there's been some, uh ... Between us, it's been
JESS: Communication problems?
LUKE: Exactly.
JESS: Never experienced that myself. Maybe she wanted a vacation.
LUKE: Yeah, from me. From us.
JESS: No. No.
LUKE: Uh, she's been keeping things from me.
JESS: Guy things?
LUKE: No. Other things. Like, she's been she's been going to a therapist. Do not say, 'It's about time.'
JESS: I did not say it. I thought it, but that's the way my mind works.
LUKE: Ah, we've been arguing, like sniping. And, we never sniped, you know. We never picked at each other in public and put each other down and made other people look at us like, "Oops, what's going on?"
JESS: I don't like you using the word "oops."
LUKE: I don't like me using it either. I never used the word before. Now I'm a guy who snipes at his girl and uses the word "oops."
JESS: Well, when does she get back?
LUKE: Three weeks. It's the longest we've been apart since we got together.
JESS: You might be wrong.
LUKE: You think I'm wrong?
JESS: Hey, I'm just hearing headlines.
LUKE: Lorelai Gilmore decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail to figure some things out. What's that sound like?
JESS: It sounds like she's leaving you.
LUKE: Yeah.
Way back in season 4, we are treated to two significant excerpts (and some smaller ones) from the self-help book that Luke purchases. The second excerpt is the one that everyone latches onto, because that's when Luke realizes his feelings for Lorelai.
But the first one is the one that comes into the play in the revival. It's the lesson that Luke never learned, and the single thing that causes him to screw up all his significant relationships:
MAN ON CASSETTE: It's going to take work. It's going to take introspection. You're gonna have to learn new things -- how to be your own best friend, how to treat your damaged psyche with a little kindness, how to say, "hey, pal, you're worth it. You mean something to someone, and you deserve love." That is the key. If you crave love, then you deserve love. Say that to yourself. If I crave love, I deserve love. [Luke sighs deeply.] Now, how did that feel coming out? I'll bet it was hard. I'll bet you felt ridiculous. Some of you may even have been incapable of saying it at all. Try again.
LUKE: I'm not incapable. I just haven't been hit in the head with the Oprah stick lately.
And that's the lesson Luke never learned. He honestly doesn't believe he is worth fighting for, and his own sense of self worth is utter crap. It's why he doesn't react to Lorelai's pleadings in "Partings" until it's far too late. It's why he lashes out at her in season 6 and becomes overly controlling. It's why he just goes along with the cruise, gets married, then never really tries to make the marriage work with Nicole. It's why he dealt with April so badly at first and couldn't figure out how to integrate his relationship with his daughter with his relationship with his fiancee and her daughter.
His talk with Jess is the first time that he openly admits that he is terrified of Lorelai leaving him again, and shows us how he really feels about himself - he's tired and lost and doing things he knows is out of character. He feels like he is the root of Lorelai's issues and that he's the one holding her back. But because of this, because he's finally acknowledging his own fears, he's able to address them. This culminates in the reiteration of his initial "I want" statement when Lorelai returns home in "Fall." This is the culmination of his entire story arc, because he's finally taking a stand for himself.
LUKE: I am not unhappy, okay? I am not unsatisfied. You think I'm unhappy and unsatisfied, and I can't convince you that I am not! I mean this right here is all I will ever need. I never thought that it would happen. That you and me that we would happen. But we did. Listen, I know I am not the easiest guy in the world to build a life with and to share a house with, but there is no one who will be more here for you than me. I will never leave. I will never think about leaving. I will do whatever it takes to fix what's wrong."
The speech in "Fall" is beautiful, necessary, but also in a way pointless. Lorelai has already decided they should get married. She never thought of leaving him, which is why she just kind of gives him this baffled look throughout all of it. He wasn't going to change her mind about anything, because it was made up all along.
But what the speech does is put the cap on Luke's storyline and what he learned through his talk with Jess. He finally acknowledges that he as a person is worth fighting for and so is their relationship, then actually does so - which is far different from his actions post-"Wedding Bell Blues" and post-"Partings." Yes, Luke also made a big damn speech at the end of "The Long Morrow," but it was also different. He doesn't put forth the effort to say he will fix whatever is wrong with them, just that he moved too slow. It's capped with him walking away again when Lorelai reveals she slept with Christopher. They never really talk about it in the aftermath, as he just makes barbs at her when they run into each other in the next episode. Luke never went to the effort to really find out what was wrong and to see if there was a chance they could move past this. They eventually do, as they apologize to each other in "Hay Bale Maze," and Luke in "Summer" finds the idea of Lorelai cheating on him preposterous, so clearly everything regarding that was resolved off-screen after "Bon Voyage."
In "Fall," Luke finally fights for his relationship because he's finally fighting for himself. He's not going to be left behind again, and he will do whatever it takes to avoid making that same mistakes again and again. This is when he starts to recognize his own self worth, and for the first time in his life, he is truly all in.
And that's a beautiful storyline - to discover that you are a person worth fighting for. That change doesn't mean you have to be left behind.

@gingerly-writing i’ve had this sitting in my wip folder for a while. it’s crap but whaaaaatevvvssss i’ll do some more later
“‘Team building exercises,’ Kit?” Eli asked, leaning against Nicolas’ desk as the door finally swung shut behind Heinrich. The first thing Kawai had done was announce that they all needed to go home and rest. With only three people manning this office, they were all clearly running short on stamina. Eli shuddered to think what their paperwork looked like right now. Apparently they had an intern who came in to organize their files, but it was only every few days, and anything truly incriminating or devastating had to be cleared away before they showed up. And the brunt of that seemed to fall to Heinrich - the poor kid had explained that Nicolas used to help, but when he got tired of Celeste not doing her fair share of paperwork, he stopped, too.
But - team building exercises. “You almost murdered Mickey last time director made us do something like that.”
“Yeah.” Kawai shrugged as she dropped into Celeste’s chair and started rummaging carelessly through her things. She shed her painfully fake country accent as quickly as she had taken off the hat and thrown it in a trash can. Eli picked it back out and stuck it on the back of a chair. “It’ll be hilarious, watching them go at it. Who actually needs this much makeup?”
“Your mom,” Eli said absently. He bumped his hip against Heinrich’s desk accidentally as he squeezed between it and the wall, shaking the mouse; the computer screen lit up from its screensaver. Eli hesitated when he noticed a little green light on the webcam attached to the top of the monitor
He laughed. Heinrich had been reluctant to leave, right up until Kawai started yelling at the three of them to get out or stay here and shred six months’ worth of documents. Eli leaned over and turned the webcam so that it pointed at Kawai. “Smile, you’re on candid camera.”
Kawai looked up, sneered, and flipped the webcam off. Eli disconnected it and shut the computer off. “You think they got anything else watching us?”
“Probably.” Kawai hesitated, scowled a little more deeply, and added, “Does this mean I have to ‘y’all’ it up while they’re gone?”
“I’ll give you a two percent raise for this job if you do.”
Kawai considered this for a moment, before remembering something. “Oh, screw you, Eli, you’re not in charge so you don’t get to add pay.”
He grinned at her. “And you can’t give yourself a raise as team lead, either. Suck it up, K-dog.”
“Do not call me that ever again.” Kawai leaned back, propping one of her boots up on Celeste’s desk. She had complained about every aspect of her outfit except the cowboy boots, Eli had noticed. He decided it would be better for his health and well-being if he didn’t mention that. Maybe he could get her to wear spurs. “Heinrich -” she pronounced the name easily “- seems solid. We could probably leave him out of all this crap, give him a break.”
“That’s mighty decent of ya, Miss Torres,” Eli said, trying out his Terrible Texan accent. He couldn’t quite manage it; he had spent most of his life in the states around the middle of the country, or up north. That was easy to mimic. No one really had an accent in Colorado (well, when you compared them to the rest of the US). “Dang. Maybe I should just speak Spanish.”
“Your Mexican Spanish is even worse than your Texan,” Kawai informed him. She’d always had an easier time with accents and languages, even if that was a talent she didn’t seem to care about. “They’ll peg you as a Spaniard in a second - speaking of which, why are you even bothering?”
Eli shrugged and grinned at her. If any of them bothered to check his employee record, they’d find out he definitely hadn’t been born in America, even if he had citizenship. “I figure if you have to suffer, then I can suffer, too.”
Kawai rolled her eyes and tapped away at Celeste’s keyboard, trying to guess her password until the computer kicked her out of the login screen. “You’re not suffering at all.”
“Nope.”
Heinrich had been told not to come back to the office until noon the next day, but he didn’t completely trust the two Americans not to have already burnt the place to the ground out of sheer incompetence. The chance to rest was a lot more welcome than he was willing to admit to anyone, but even so, he showed up at the cafe across the street two hours early and skulked about. Their building looked fine, so far, but maybe they had cracked the foundation, or shorted out their entire computer system.
He was still irritated that Eli had turned off his webcam.
It was eleven-thirty. Heinrich sighed, threw his fourth cup of coffee away, and gave up. No one was there behind the receptionist’s desk to meet him, but they hadn't had a secretary for a year now. Heinrich reached over the counter to press a button on the underside, letting himself into the main office.
The Americans had changed everything.
All the desks had been rearranged, the two empty desks from the corner dragged out into the center of the room, taking over Nicolas’ usual spot. Heinrich’s had remained, fortunately, untouched; the back third of the room was about six inches higher than the rest, and he had converted the entire spot into his own personal area. To Heinrich's dismay, though, the third empty desk from their storage closet had been dusted off and dragged onto the dais next to his.
Nicolas' desk had been shoved over, so that it was touching Celeste’s. They would have to sit face-to-face. And that was when Heinrich realized that the Americans wished to die.
He didn't see Kay anywhere, but Eli he found lying on the floor, feet up in an empty office chair, listening to ABBA, of all things, playing from his phone. The man had shed his hat and jacket, and Heinrich stared for a moment at his bright pink hair and the intricate flowers and vines tattooed down his thick arms.
Heinrich cleared his throat. “Mr. - Mr. Montoya,” he said, and was wondering whether he should nudge the man awake when Eli slit open his eyes.
Eli yawned and rubbed his eyes. “Shoot. Sorry, man, what time is it?”
“Eleven-thirty-six.” Heinrich moved back anxiously as Eli stood up, turning off his music. “Mr. Montoya, sir, you have to fix it -”
“Please don't call me sir. Or mister.”
“Uh - okay, mister - Eli,” Heinrich corrected himself, as Eli nudged his chair-turned-footrest back under one of the empty desks. “You can't do this.”
“Do what?”
Heinrich waved a hand helplessly towards his coworkers’ desks. “You can't put them together.”
Eli glanced at the desks, quirked a crooked grin, and lifted one shoulder. “That was Kay’s idea.”
“Well, it’s a terrible one,” Heinrich said. “I told you, they're not good together -”
“Aw, they’ll be fine,” Eli said carelessly. “It can't be that big a deal.”
Heinrich stared at him, but before he could explain why Eli was literally courting death, the harbinger of said imminent doom sailed through the door, twenty minutes early.
Celeste froze for a moment, coffee cup to her bright pink lips, one perfectly manicured pinky raised. Her eyes darted around the room, and Heinrich felt his stomach sink with every passing second of silence.
“What,” she finally said, her voice cool, crisp, and as sharp as her red-painted fingernails, “is this.”
Heinrich hurried himself to the relative safety of his desk. Eli, the idiot, leaned against Nicolas’ desk, his head tilted slightly to the side, eyes hooded, and a tiny little half-smile that suggested he not only expected this, but thought he was ready for it.
Well, he was wrong.
“It’s easier to work with your partner when you aren’t all the way across the room,” Eli said, and was about to go on when Celeste interrupted him.
“Put it back.” Her words were just as wintry as her smile, and neither of them had any effect on Eli.
“No.”
Celeste took in a long breath, but then the door opened before she could even get started. Kay entered not from the door that led outside, but the one that connected their main office with the back half of the building. Celeste’s eyes raked over the fitted blue jeans and the loose black shirt with a cow skull on it, framed by roses. It paused on what Kay held in her hand.
“What is that?”
Kay looked down at the gun in her hand. “I believe this is a Colt M1911A1,” she said blandly. “Or, in layman terms, what is known as a gun.”
Nicolas followed Kay into the room, scowling. Celeste narrowed her eyes at him; Heinrich was willing to bet she was irritated that she hadn’t turned out to be the first one back at the office, after all. “They’re having us take a shooting test,” Nicolas said in clipped tones, his hands crossed over his chest. Eli yawned and dropped down into a spare office chair. His momentum carried it halfway across the room. “Miss Torres, apparently, is unsatisfied with our recent firearm evaluation scores.”
“You bet your boots,” Kay said. Heinrich frowned; he thought he’d caught an undercurrent of self-loathing in her words. But maybe it was just disgust at their scores.
“But we all passed ours last time,” he said uncertainly.
Celeste sniffed and waved her hand. “Never mind that,” she said. “Nicolas, do you see this?” She flicked her perfect fingernails at the paired-off desks.
Nick gave a heavy sigh. “Don’t bother,” he said, “they won’t change it back.”
His words were perfectly calculated, Heinrich noticed, to prime Celeste for a tantrum. He almost regretted it, but at least this time, Celeste’s fury would be aimed towards a common enemy.
“I,” she seethed, “will not be seated next to that incompetent buffoon. I work best when I have privacy. Removing the careful balance of this room that we have cultivated over years will - why aren’t you listening to me!”
Eli looked up innocently from his phone, which was beeping softly with some kind of game. Kay had set her pistol down and was idly flipping through a sheaf of papers.
“When the two of you can beat me in a shooting contest,” Kay said, setting the paper down and tossing her hair over her shoulder, “you can sit wherever the hell you want. Until then, y’all are gonna get to work on the eco-terrorist paperwork. Henry, kiddo, it’s your turn.”
She pivoted neatly on her heel and stalked out of the room, while Celeste stared after. Heinrich hesitated, then shot her an apologetic shrug and followed. Nick sighed.
“Give it up, Celeste,” he said wearily. “You won’t be able to beat her. I’ve been trying for an hour.”
Celeste pursed her lips in one tight line. “Just watch me, ros bif.”

How Aster Farms is Rebuilding After the Mendocino Complex Fire
Juliet Bennett Rylah of High Times Reports:
Aster Farms was devastated by fire. But with the help of their community, they’re rebuilding.
Over the course of 2018, California has suffered both its largest and its most destructive wildfires. The Camp Fire is the state’s most destructive, burning over 142,000 acres, killing at least 85 people, and destroying more than 18,000 structures. These totals are apt to rise, as not all of the missing have been accounted for and the fire still isn’t fully contained. In July, the Mendocino Complex Fire—comprised of both the Ranch and smaller River fires—became California’s largest at over 458,000 acres, though it only destroyed some 280 structures.
Among them were several belonging to Aster Farms, an Upper Lake cannabis company founded in 2016 by husband-and-wife team Julia Jacobson and Samuel Ludwig on the farm where Director of Cultivation Noah Cornell had lived since 2008. Four months later, the company is just getting back on their feet; today, Jacobson describes the farm’s garden as “a little oasis of green amidst moonscape.” How does one recover from complete devastation? Jacobson and Ludwig say it’s all about gratitude, community support, and looking for the silver lining.
Jacobson and Ludwig
Both Jacobson and Ludwig had used cannabis for medicinal purposes prior to becoming entrepreneurs in the industry. Jacobson used it for insomnia and chronic migraines, while Ludwig found it provided relief for a shoulder injury that never fully healed. As California moved towards the legalization of recreational cannabis, the couple found themselves wanting to start a brand they’d like to buy: safe, sustainable, local, clean—the kind of cannabis you’d buy at Whole Foods, if Whole Foods sold cannabis. Ludwig’s childhood friend, Noah Cornell, has a degree in sustainable agriculture and had already been cultivating for over a decade. In 2016, the trio decided to use the soil Cornell had already been working on for their new venture and Aster Farms was born.
But on July 27, Jacobson recalled stepping outside to take a break from packaging and spotting a huge plume of smoke coming over a nearby ridge. This is the same day the fire was first reported, though they’d spend three days watching and waiting, setting up sprinklers, and preparing for a possible evacuation. Cornell and his family did not sleep in their home on the property, just in case something happened overnight. Ludwig remembered occasionally driving off the farm and down the road to see where the fire had spread.
“We were basically surrounded on all sides by these massive plumes of smoke to the north and south of us,” he said. “At one point, the plumes actually met above us and let off this very eerie, orange, apocalyptic light all over the area over our property and probably beyond. It wasn’t just about seeing the fire, but also seeing all the firemen, firetrucks, and planes dropping retardant all around us. It felt very ominous.”
The Aster team had hoped, on the second day, that the planes soaring overhead might be the farm’s salvation. Yet they seemed to pass the farm by without dropping water or fire retardant.

“It was pretty tough to stomach,” Jacobson said. “When we saw the planes coming, we were shouting and cheering and high-fiving. I think I even called my mom and said, ‘they’re here, it’s going to be over.’ And they didn’t drop and just went away.”
Likely complicating matters was the Carr Fire, threatening the city of Redding. The Aster team understood that the more populated area may have been prioritized over their location, which remains largely rural. By comparison, the Carr Fire is now ranked as the seventh most destructive fire in California history.
The Evacuation
When winds again shifted the fire in Aster Farms’ direction, the team began taking photos for insurance purposes, gathering the rest of their belongings, and rounding up their animals. They were easily able to ready their two dogs and were grateful that two of their farm cats wandered into the garage as they were packing up. But, they couldn’t find Harry, a friendly half-bobcat, half-tabby that had lived on the property with the Cornells for several years.
“He was roaming around and not anywhere we could catch him when we were evacuating,” Jacobson said. “That was horrible, searching desperately for an animal that you love, knowing that you have to leave them.”
Yet as Harry remained missing, another animal appeared: a stray Yorkshire Terrier covered in matted fur they called Flash, as they typically only saw the tiny dog darting among bushes and trees. In the weeks leading up to the fire, they’d begun to see her more often and one farm employee had even been able to get Flash to eat food from her hand.
“She was just standing there in front of us. We were positive she knew something was wrong. I reached down, and she just looked up and knew she had to be saved,” Jacobson said.
So, Flash accompanied the group out of the area and to safety. Their escape was not a harrowing one, like the panicked tales that have since come out of Paradise, CA. Aster Farms had something many in the Camp Fire did not: time to prepare.
Once they’d made it out, it was a long wait to find out what, if anything, was left. For over a week, mandatory evacuations prevented the team from returning.
“When you’re locked out for 10 days, all you have are the satellite images,” Jacobson said. “It was really tough, just wondering what happened.”
The Aftermath
When they finally returned, the devastation was shocking. The Cornell family’s home was gone, as were Aster Farms’ office and their large garden and its some 500 plants. A smaller garden of 100 plants yielded just 13 that had survived completely, but the others died over the course of those 10 days as damaged irrigation lines prevented them from getting any water. While one of their popular strains, Maui OG, survived, their Sour Maui did not. Other surviving structures included a shed and some fencing. Jacobson was relieved that they had yet to start construction on a planned buildout of their processing facility and new greenhouses, as those might have been lost, too.
There was no time to dwell on what had happened. Jacobson said they immediately began clearing out dead plants and tilling the soil. Neighbors helped them hang flyers and set up traps and cameras in search of Harry, whom they hoped had been able to flee. The cannabis community rallied around Aster; Top Hat Nursery in Salinas donated 400 cannabis plants, while Terra Vesco in Sonoma offered them compost and fertilizer. Aster’s distributors, Nabis and Filigreen, graciously waived transportation costs when bringing the donated plants and planting material to the property.
Aster is now making strides towards a fresh future. A new greenhouse, which they hope will be up and running in the next few months, will feature a light-deprivation cycle of both Sour Maui and Maui OG. Flash has since been checked out by a veterinarian and cleaned up by a groomer. She’s now a part of the Aster family and “lives for pets,” according to Jacobson.
Moving Forward
Though they don’t expect another wildfire to hit the area for at least another 15 to 20 years, making the farm fire defensible has become a large priority. Precautions include clearing out at least 30 feet of defensible space around the farm, meaning clearing the brush and trees so that if a fire does come, it has no fuel to spread further. They’ve also acquired an additional water tank and as they rebuild structures, will consider fire-defensible materials and building at an angle that will work with the surrounding ridge patterns so that flames will go up and over instead of straight through.
There’s a part of the process, however, that isn’t about structures built, angles considered, or plants in the freshly tilled soil. Some of it is emotional; how does one lose so much, but maintain the will to move forward?
“What’s really helped move forward are the silver linings,” Jacobson said. “And the biggest one is that we get to rebuild the farm of our dreams. That doesn’t just mean the Aster Farms cultivation, but [Cornell’s] house as well.”
She continues, “It takes a long time. I’ll say that. But every day, we just look at these silver lining and we are so thankful that we had time to escape…We were incredibly unlucky the with the largest wildfire in California history, only 200 structures burned and we were one of them, but the support from the community has really allowed us to get back on our feet quickly.”
As a thanks to the community, Aster Farms has released a new product line called Harry’s Harvest, named in honor of Harry the cat. From each 5-pack of joints, rolled with a combination of the farm’s flower, $2 will be donated to the Hopland and Lakeport volunteer firehouses. In the future, Jacobson said they hope to donate to nonprofits that work with the opioid crisis and veterans. Those who are in areas where Harry’s Harvest is not currently available may donate to Aster Farms’ Crowdrise to support these causes.
As for Harry himself, he remains missing. Ludwig said he hopes that the cat ran in a different direction and found safety at a nearby water source.
“Hopefully, he’s far away and living an amazing bobcat life and maybe one day, he will find his way home,” Jacobson said.

Well, my dad owns a 1959 TR-3 Triumph, and also a 1981 Delorean. I will be turning 16 soon, and I plan on purchasing car insurance so I can drive a 2006 Hyundai Sonata to school and around town. The problem is.. I want to be able to occasionally drive my dad's Triumph TR-3 around town, to school, on nice days, etc. Maybe only on weekends, that kind of thing. The problem is, I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on car insurance for a car I won't be driving very often. I read that there is a cents-per-mile program which is essentially a prepaid insurance card and you buy insurance for blocks of miles and it keeps track on a special odometer. ""The most basic and cheapest insurance available, forget what it's called?""
There's a type of insurance for mostly minors or people who deal with used cars that are cheap etc, rarely driven, traded often, and it's called ______ I forget, and it only entitles you to be insured against law suits if the other person is injured. Real crappy insurance right? I'm starting to trade cars but some will need to be driven to shops and stuff like that. In my state MICHIGAN, you need to have insurance BEFORE you register, which sucks for me. For example, I am about to buy a piece of crap 500 dollar Chevy Cavalier and I need to most basic insurance, I just forget the term for this. I don't want to get a huge big policy for a car that will be driven probably less then 50 miles in it's time that I have it.""

Who provides reasonable car insurance for a young man?
My 20-year-old stepson is seeking his first car. He's newly licensed and thus has (obviously) not had car insurance before. He also has not had a loan so he has 'new' credit. The insurance quotes we have gotten for him are outrageous! Allstate offered him...get this... $1300 a month for ANY car we could think of! He's a full-time student with good grades, and we're talking cheap used cars here. Progressive offered a better rate ($400/month for full coverage, $250/month for basic) but they don't want to let him pay by the month, meaning he's gotta fork out 2 grand for six months of coverage...which puts a bit of a crimp on the whole car shopping thing. Is there any insurance company out there that is a little more reasonable? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.""

Why do people keep comparing health insurance mandates to car insurance mandates?
Car insurance mandates are done at the STATE level, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yet people (the president included) continue to claim that a FEDERAL mandate to buy insurance is no different than being required to cover your car. (Completely ignoring that you have to BUY a car before you must get insurance...the govt's basically saying they own your body...insure it or be taxed) So isn't a FEDERAL mandate unconstitutional unless you plan on writing an amendment to the Constitution so that such a mandate is in accordance with the Tenth Amendment?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27384.html The questions from ABCs George Stephanopoulos highlighted a politically dangerous new aspect of the health reform debate for Obama  as critics from Republican leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say his reform proposals amount to a middle-class tax increase. Obama promised during the campaign that Americans earning less than $250,000 a year would not see any tax increases from an Obama administration. Obama strongly denied that the mandate amounts to a tax increase  saying it was no different than requiring people to have auto insurance and charging a penalty if they dont. He also said it was important for everyone to have insurance so that people who do carry insurance dont have to shoulder the load for people who dont. The excise tax is designed as an enforcement mechanism to ensure people will carry insurance.""
