What's your take on Thor Ragnarok? What's your take on Thor's development within the MCU so far?I'm a fan of your posts and tags!
GREAT QUESTIONS THANK YOU FOR ASKING, THANKS FOR BEING A FAN
tldr I """"like"""" Thor's canon development now bc I've done some fucking Olympic grade backfilling and contortion to recontextualize the canon to make it meaningful, but this results in me living in my own pocket universe of an interpretation where I can't really interact with other people bc they don't subscribe to my exact reading of canon
But bro I LOVE Ragnarok. I know that can be a controversial take (I've read the meta of people who think it "slaughtered" Thor and Loki's characterisations), but I just thought it was so much fun! Like on a movie watching experience level and on a lore/meta level, it's FUN. That's not something I can say for 95% of marvel movies, which are nigh universally too dimly lit and too reliant on hateful sarcasm between characters as a substitute for a relationship.
On a meta level, I 1000% subscribe to the idea that the entire movie is a retelling that Thor is preforming for his refugees, so it's a heavily edited, exaggerated, and sillier version of events meant to keep everyone's spirits up. On the point of lore continuity, I really appreciate that thor3 makes CANON and EXPLICIT Odin's campaign of imperialist violence behind his "peaceful" reign over the nine realms, I FUCKIN LOVE IT. I LOVE the context Hela gives to their family, because she makes canon and explicit Odin's disappointments in Thor. I LOVE that Mjolnir was Hela's weapon before it was Thor's because Mjolnir was never meant to be a metric for moral goodness or readiness for rule, but a metric for a colonialist's commitment to imperialist violence on behalf of an empire WHICH IS WHY IT FINDS CAPTAIN AMERICA WORTHY BUT NOT LOKI
(btw if anyone else can draw a line between Hela and Steve Rogers that is a. representative of Odin's priorities and b. includes Thor but excludes Loki, hmu, bc this is the best I got.)
(Mjolnir rejects Thor in thor1 bc Thor was trying to conquer Jotunheim for personal glory and doesn't accept him again until he starts thinking about the good of the empire again by protecting Midgard, an imperial asset. Mjolnir rejects Loki bc Loki is a not an imperialist in service of an empire)
Off topic but I know a lot of people get hung up on Thor leaving Loki paralyzed in the parking garage, potentially to be found by the grandmasters dudes? Like people say that was unaccountably cruel and ooc for Thor. But like, ok, they killed everyone on the way up, and Thor knows his armed gladiator rebellion is on his heels also headed for the parking garage, so I dunno, I never read it as Loki was in any particular danger? But I'm a notorious Thor apologist as well as a Loki apologist so 🤷‍♂️
Things I also love: loki defunding the military to spend that money on art and infrastructure, Loki's live action thorki fanfic that Asgard unaccountably loved, Loki stonewalling Odin's attempt to reconcile bc fuck Odin, Thor's lightning powers, Bruce banner is now a Jewish grandma, Hela have I mentioned Hela love that girlboss, Jeff goldblum love that wiggly man, the Valkyrie love that angry girl, "piss off ghost", inglorious deaths for all the warriors 3, "I'm here" (screaming, crying, shaking), the story about how Loki bit Thor as a snake as well as the confirmation that they are in fact the same age
I have complicated feelings about Thor's canon development tbh. On a very ground floor sort of reaction, I despise what they did to My Boy in infinity war and endgame. I think it's a disgusting character assassination and I don't think the russos understand humour and specifically how to use humour to expand on tragedy like what thor3 did.
On the other hand, if you've read my fic and meta, you'll know that I've accepted the canon development, bc at this point, I've done a LOT of very deliberate and concerted labour to MAKE the canon development we see between thor1 and endgame WORK. But, like, there was a LOT of labour that I, specifically, put into it. It fully relies on me specifically doing a lot of digging and reaching and mining these movies for every possible frame of content to the point where I am pretty sure I've put more effort into making all the development make continuous sense than any of the screenwriters put into the actual development.
And I think I've probably just drank too much of my own Kool aid but like, I am in a position now where I do think my interpretation of Thor's character development is THE most complete and accurate reading of his character development. Key to these points are: a) I think he is an ex-imperialist who is currently and actively trying to deprogram himself from the colonialists' mindset that Odin instilled within him b) he is trying to deprogram himself from Asgard's culture of extreme toxic masculinity wherein he was not taught to have any sort of emotional processing that did not involve physical violence c) Loki is/was/always will be the person he loves best
So like, as I try to show in my thorki canonverse fics (shameless plug for myself), I can make most of the bad decisions made about Thor's character in infinity war and endgame work if I recontextualize all of his canon actions with my own (well supported, well documented) headcanon'd baggage. Of course he goes on a death wish mission to get revenge on Thanos -- he has a literal deathwish bc he was already supposed to die with Loki. Of course he sinks into an unshakeable depression afterwards -- he has no identity now that he has no family bc he was never taught to live by himself or for himself. Of course he leaves new Asgard and abdicates his rule -- he hasn't wanted a hand in the dirty business of Empire ever since Odin's ambition got his mom and brother killed in thor2, and that hasn't changed. I try to make him go through all the canon-implied feelings and anxieties and doubts in front of the reader. My entire goal of this is that people read my shit, then look at canon and think "oohh that context DOES make it better!" I will be gratified if that is the case.
(The only thing I cannot fix is the bit in endgame where Thor walks past Loki's Tupperware cell and the narrative doesn't come to a screeching fucking halt as Thor has so many feelings that he has some sort of paralytic breakdown where he simultaneously wants to commit Time Crime (tm) so he can just stay here forever and also wishes he could just die here, next to loki, like he was always supposed to. Like, that needed to happen to really lynchpin all of my work together into one smooth, problem free reading, but I'm not allowed to have nice things so)
(oh also I didn't like Thor calling frigga "mom". Shouldn't it at least be "mum"? I think "mother" is best tbh, bc I don't really read them as having that sort of relationship, see "toxic masculinity", see also "homosocial socialisation")
(and ok I get that it was a nice moment for Thor to call the hammer back to his hand, and I get that it even still works with my headcanon that mjolnir finds Thor worthy still bc Thor is defending the imperial asset that is Midgard, but like God damnit. The uncritical and unquestioning use of that word "worthy" when he catches the hammer again. Like worthy of what you guys? Do you ever ask yourself that question bc I very much do. I kinda wish they didnt bring it up at all, or if they did, it didn't come back to Thor's hand and he is just like, wistfully, "that's all right, I suspected as much. I'm such a different man now, mjolnir doesn't recognize me. I don't think I'd be alive right now if I had been the same man I was")
Wow that got long, anyway, thanks for chatting with me! Again, always a pleasure to field asks!

POV: you're watching Loki episode 5. Loki and Sylvie share a blanket, and then five minutes later sylvie’s like “we’re the same :)” which comes after them holding hands to cause a Nexus event, Mobius implying they're in love, and Loki appearing to want to confess some sort of adoration for her before being pruned,,, and so far, it seems the showrunners/writers are on board w/ calling it a love story,,,,,,,,,,
let’s dive a bit into this ship.
(note: i'm not going to tag this as "syl//ki," and i will not put any ship in the body text without the "//", but tumblr may take the "syl//ki" out of "anti syl//ki" and put it in the ship tag. that's out of my hands. you need to block "anti syl//ki" if you don't want to see that.)
when it comes to defending or being anti syl//ki, I think a lot of people sort of missed the memo on or forgot about the fact that Loki is a frost giant. I have looked on both Twitter and Tumblr and literally have not seen a single person talk about it in the selfcest debate so far. I've probably missed something. So if you have seen this argument, well, here it is again!
so, syl//ki defenders will say,
It’s not selfcest because they are genetically different. They might have different parents since they were adopted by the Asgardians.
If they were genetically similar, then they would also be genetically similar to Boastful Loki and Alligator Loki.
First of all. Loki’s last name is Laufeyson. Sylvie’s last name is Laufeydottir. Due to the naming conventions used here, both can be assumed to be children of Laufey. I realize we haven’t seen Sylvie’s Laufey, but who’s to say they look any different than the one we saw in Thor? Furthermore, there’s nothing to suggest that they weren’t adopted by the same exact couple (i.e., Odin and Frigga or some variation), and if you’re not ok with Thor and Loki, you probably should consider this. Probably. We'll really just have to see what happens if they develop Sylvie further. Who knows, they might get cold feet in the last episode and actually make her Enchantress (Sylvie Lushton) proper.
The second point really pisses me off not just as someone who loves Norse mythology but also just. The race card. Does no one remember the fact that Loki is actually supposed to be blue? He’s not genetically white. There is nothing in his genes that command him to be white. That is a disguise (originally put on him by Odin if I’m not mistaken? feel free to check me on that).
Loki could literally be any gender and/or any color he wants to be. Hell, we've seen him shapeshift into Steve Rogers briefly and Odin presumably for a good while. Really, it's hard to pass judgement on the relationships that the other Lokis have to their respective timelines. We can only make assumptions based on the evidence we have. (but also have fun with headcanons of course)
(also the funny part about bringing up Boastful Loki is ,, everyone is always like “well, are you trying to tell me that our Loki has the same genes as Boastful/Hammer Loki? 🙄🙄🙄” and like, they won’t come out and just say one is white and one is black like,,, :) they’re trying so hard not to sound racist it’s hilarious. AND THEN TO PUT ALLIGATOR LOKI IN THE SAME CATEGORY. LAUGHABLE. str8 up.)
But concerning the alligator, in Norse mythology, frost giants can have kids that are really just. Out there. Jormungand is a snake that can wrap itself around the world, Fenris is a gargantuan wolf, and Hel is a half dead child. Those are just Loki’s kids (note: in the mythology. they also exist in the comics as his children, but I am also aware that Fenris and Hela are not his children in the MCU and trust me, that peeves me a lot). I’m sure there’s more examples though. So like. Potentially????? Yeah, Loki Prime could be genetically similar to Alligator Loki.
Furthermore, according to this Gizmodo article, Alligator Loki is a Loki (2021) creation, and they admit to playing with the idea that Alligator Loki may not even be a Loki. So take that how you will.
Tumblr media
So my verdict is that Loki and Sylvie are the same person with different looks, possibly some difference in genetics, depending on the mother.
(note: Loki is marked in his file as genderfluid, technically we cannot know what he was assigned at birth. we only know his pronouns. he could be AFAB. Sylvie may be AMAB.)
I don’t ship lok//ius, and I don’t care if Loki gets with a girl (I actually really like Loki and Darcy) so don’t come at me with the biphobia excuse that’s running around. I will say that yes, I would adore seeing Loki in an mlm or wlw relationship. Yes, it is really cliché to have the two opposite gender-presenting leads get together. Yes, I want to see Loki and Sylvie as friends/family. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about. I’m just here to ask if this is selfcest or not.
So yes, Syl//ki really does appear to be a selfcest ship and like, if you’re willing to own that, own it. It looks like that’s how the show’s going so far so,, uh,,, enjoy it if that’s something you want to do I guess. I’m ,, probably not going to though. But congrats on the canon! If it is!
I’m not asking you to stop shipping it, if you do. I'm not even asking you to ship with caution. Overall, I just hope I made you think a little more about it and maybe get a discussion going that doesn't revolve around the same arguments we've heard for the past three weeks.
Because like, it's not hurting anyone to ship it, and if you send hate speech to any shippers or the showrunners, literally what is wrong with you???? there are civil ways to discourse, my lord.
Personally, if I had to ship it, I would only do so as a self-love metaphor, and I think that's as far as I would take it. As it currently stands, it's on the same level of Oncest, so like. it's weird but honestly it doesn't hurt anyone. (and if you don't know what Oncest is, give this video by Sarah Z a watch.) Really it all just amounts to this test from Buzzfeed that you've probably seen in fandom memes before. So you can use that as your squick-o-meter when it comes to this ship.
I will end this by saying I am not pro-ship. Inc//est and pedo//philia have no place in fandom and thinking these are okay could lead to harmful thinking in real life, especially with regards to children in fandom.
Selfcest is not technically on the same level as inc//est, and yes, I know, in the words of the great Buzzfeed Unsolved team, "anytime you have to say technically that's not great" but I really mean it here. We can still say technically here.
TL;DR: yeah syl//ki is more than likely selfcest. don't send hate to people who ship it tho (this includes the showrunners).

Hello, we’re gonna talk about Bucky Barnes. I know, shocker. A totally new concept for which I have never written the likes of before. (Oof, I sound like Elizabeth Bennet. Neat!) As well as the beautiful and inspiring Agent Margaret ‘Peggy’ Carter. (Yeah, I put her full name and not Bucky’s cuz y’all already know how much I admire him.)
We all have our opinions on the latest and last Avengers movie Endgame. Whether it be that Tony shouldn’t have died. Natasha shouldn’t have died. Peter Parker and Nebula should’ve been adopted by Tony Stark. All popular opinions and theories and reasonably acceptable alternate endings. (Personally, I agree with all of these and I’m genuinely upset that the actors contracts ended on that note.) Now the opinion that has become the main topic for this post is the ever-so-popular argument on the ending for the former Captain America, Steve Rogers. No, I’m not talking about giving his shield, mantle, and title over to his friend and teammate Sam Wilson. I actually think this was a smart move on the directors part, if a little untimely. Sam would’ve always been Captain America, though he would’ve had to wait until Bucky got his turn. I’m getting off course and y’all have to deal with that, sorry. Anyway, I’m talking about Steve going to replace the stones and staying in the past.
It was cute. It was, truly. Hero gets the girl and all that jazz. And it would’ve even made sense, if not for the obvious. The obvious being that Steve’s ending did not in any way capture the story of his life. Or Peggy’s. He was so incredibly selfish that his actions would’ve ruined his characters if not for other factors. He disrupted the entirety of her life. Peggy founded S.H.I.E.L.D. Peggy Carter got married. Peggy Carter had children. Peggy Carter had a fulfilling career and life. She died of old age surrounded by the people who loved and admired her the most. Hell, she even got to ease the guilt and sadness caused by Steve Rogers’ supposed death. Not many people get to say that. She was a wonderful and amazing woman. Not to mention a feminist icon. All of it, nearly her entire life was undone by one dumbass she kissed once. Just once. Yes, she missed him, wished it could’ve been something more, maybe even fantasized on what could’ve been a few times. But she was content, happy. She didn’t deserve having her path screwed up and her family blown out of existence. Especially not to the man who kissed her niece just days after her funeral. The disrespect. (If you ship Steve and Sharon, that’s on you.) Peggy probably never even knew that Bucky was still alive, if Steve told her along with what happened to Bucky, I’d like to believe that she sure as shit pitched a fit to Steve about his idiocy. Because who the hell abandons their best friend, their brother, in a world where they are either hated or constantly misunderstood. I know, I just know, that if there was a way to send Steve back, she would’ve. For Bucky’s sake, if nothing else. But there wasn’t and Peggy Carter is nothing if not a reasonable and thoughtful woman.
She knows that Bucky can handle it. We all do. But he shouldn’t have to do it alone. He deserves more than that. Yeah, he has Sam. But, in the movies, Sam is shown to barely tolerate Bucky, sometimes aligning with him to save the world whenever the situation calls for it. I love the Stackie friendship. I think it’s great, honestly. But we have to remember that canonically, Sam just doesn’t like Bucky that much. And he has every right not to. Regardless of the brainwashing, Bucky did try to kill Sam on multiple occasions. And Sam wouldn’t be Sam if he just forgave him, even if Bucky did apologize for his actions and tried to make amends. And, yes, in the FATWS trailer they appear to be friends or at the very least friendly. But there is over a year-and-a-half distance between Endgame and FATWS, giving them plenty of time to get better acquainted as more than frenemies and on-and-off allies. But I’m not talking about in the near future, I’m talking about post-Endgame, where they haven’t quite gotten that far. There’s camaraderie there, which is good, but I felt that, realistically, it only exists because they both know that they’re gonna be stuck together for a while and know better, know that they have to make the most of the situation.
Honestly, it makes the entirety of the Captain America storyline, where it is explicitly stressed that Steve and Bucky are close friends who’d do just about anything for each other, a moot point. I’m not trying to offend the Stucky shippers, really. Stucky makes more sense that Steve and Sharon anyway. I’m just referring to the fact that Steve and Bucky aren’t a canon couple in the sense that they were never specifically written as one. (And I stg that if they follow up on the rumors that say that Bucky and Sharon will be a couple, the producers and directors and story writers will be catching my fucking hands.) It just doesn’t make any sense that Steve would spend so much time mourning Bucky, constantly implying how much he needs Bucky in his life, then doing everything and anything to ensure Bucky’s safety only to leave him for the first woman who ever looked at him in interest. Especially since it usually takes less than a year to get over a crush and homie had over seventy years, nearly ten of those where he could have consciously gotten over her. But with Bucky, he might not have had a lot of time with him, but it was always supposed to have meant that he would have waited for his friend to get better. Bucky wasn’t dying, Bucky wasn’t about to leave him behind. If anything, Bucky was just as eager to get better so he could reconnect with the only person who could even marginally understand him and his trauma. (Natasha could have, too, but they killed her, so...) The only people who even like Bucky are Shuri and T’Challa, who re-dubbed him as the White Wolf. (In the comics, the White Wolf was the adoptive brother of the Black Panther, so T’Challa and Shuri and Mother Queen Ramonda straight up adopted Bucky Barnes into the royal family. This is based on the rumors that Bucky will be replacing Hunter as the White Wolf in the MCU.)
Point is that Steve left Bucky behind, their friendship being a main plot point in all of the Captain America movies, and it makes no sense and makes it seem like their friendship meant nothing when Steve went back to Peggy. Hopefully, they can remedy this in FATWS by making old Steve a kind of mentor to the new Captain America and a sort of guidance towards Bucky. Steve’s entire personality was his compassion, consideration, and commitment to the people he cared about and his morals which he is often bull-headed about. I love Steve Rogers. Captain America is one of my favorite superheroes. Chris Evans portrayed this character perfectly and really brought the character to life. But what the fuck was that ending. All I’m saying-she says after like four paragraphs-is that they could’ve done worse.

Warnings: N/A Limitations: major character death, terminal illness, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, incest, ableism Notes: Their designs are fantasy-influenced more than historical, and even though I was using MCU as reference, I aged Tony down since canonically Howard died when he was younger anyway! What if Agent Carter is Peggy’s daydream?
I just had this thought earlier, so please bear with me. What if Agent Carter isn’t canon, it’s one of Peggy’s daydreams while working at the SSR?
Evidence below the cut
Howard There’s a dichotomy in how Howard is portrayed in the movies versus Agent Carter. We know from the Iron Man movies that Howard is - at the very least - distant - to Tony, and the tie-in comics show he’s emotionally and sometimes physically abusive. The movies work this in by showing Howard’s digs to his son, his yelling at Tony to stop playing around in Iron Man 2, how much more Tony got along with his mom in Civil War. The First Avenger shows that Howard is a huge fan of his own - it doesn’t show him being abusive, but it shows him to be fascinated with two things: Himself, and Steve Rogers. And we know one of Tony’s problems with Steve is that Howard always seemed to like Steve more.
But in Agent Carter, Howard is a bit of player, but he’s essentially a good guy. Why? From the narrative aspect, we need Howard to be a good guy because we, the audience, have to be able to root for him, and root for Peggy to succeed in helping him. This Howard is one where no one would ever dream of him hurting Tony or being a bad guy. He might be busy with his job, but he’s not a bad guy.
In the interest of this theory, though, this is the Howard we get because this is the Howard that Peggy knows. She can’t imagine that Howard would ever hurt his child - hell, she can probably barely conceive of Howard turning into a family man, and so we get a version of Howard where no one would ever dream of this Howard striking Tony. We get the version of Howard who goes to a woman he knew years before to help him when he’s in a tight spot, instead of a virtual army of lawyers and private investigators, and who will happily repay in an opulent apartment so she’ll never have to worry about where to live ever again.
Steve Peggy and Steve are supposed to be an epic relationship in the MCU, but what if it wasn’t? The movies show them having a crush on each other, kissing once, and then Peggy moving on to a husband, kids, and grandkids, and Steve eventually trying to move on, too. Markus and McFeely confirmed that the two of them only ever kissed once. According to the Marvel timeline, Peggy and Steve knew each other for less than two and a half years. And we see in The First Avenger that they have crushes on each other for even less time than that. Peggy only gets one scene in The Winter Soldier (where she explicitly talks about how she had a full, happy life, and her only regret is that Steve didn’t get the same chance), and she gets a funeral in Civil War, where the writers and the Russos confirmed that Peggy was Steve’s last tie to his past, other than Bucky. There’s no mention of romantic love, because, well, Peggy moved on decades before and was no longer in love with Steve, and Steve had accepted that they would never have a relationship in 2012, possibly even when he went into the ice in the first place, and had been trying to move on himself for a couple years. So why do people think Peggy and Steve are this huge, epic romance when the movies don’t present it that way at all?
Because of Peggy, that’s why.
Peggy had a crush on Steve. All it ever came to, canonically, was a kiss. But her crush on him didn’t disappear when he did. Suddenly, she has this mission/daydream where she has a physical part of him. Her daydream helps her let go of him. And while the movie had to deal with the fight against Hydra, Agent Carter has more time to delve into her crush. Remember, she was possibly 19 but lying about her age to serve in the US and saying she was 21 (depending on what source you use - I saw a post somewhere long ago that showed two different DOBs, making her 21 in the States but 19 in the UK at the same time). Either way, she was YOUNG in The First Avenger. She had a crush on an international hero. It’s perfectly normal that the crush would run deep for her, particularly given all Steve did.
It also explains why the other Commandos referred to her as “Cap’s girl” and why there was a radio show where a character clearly based on Peggy is rescued by Steve, but why we never see any of this anywhere else. In Peggy’s fantasy, she and Steve DID have a chance to be together, and everyone more or less knew it and approved. She was the Chosen One. Which... anyone who’s been on earth for any degree of time knows that if a woman is dating a famous guy that others want to get with, it’s... incredibly unlikely that the woman is going to be liked. Look at fandom’s treatment of women, especially canon love interests, even in the MCU.
In her daydream, she and Steve had more than just a kiss. She was a respected member of the Commandos, respected enough that they would come if she called them, whereas in the movies we rarely saw her with them because she was assigned to Phillips. Again, we don’t see her close ties to the Commandos in the films - she storms the base with them and Phillips, is present at some planning meetings, that’s it. After the comforts Steve about Bucky, she refers to him as “your friend.” That’s the extent of their interactions. But in her daydream, she’s a heroine who was deeply loved and respected by everyone, where even the Commandos follow her orders because she’s amazing and because she’s “Cap’s girl.”
Ultimately, her daydream helps her get over her crush on Steve and move on to the guy in her office who might have a crush on her. Which brings us to...
SSR & the resets Why the hell didn’t Peggy jump to SHIELD at any point in the series? Why, at the end of S1, do we get Peggy saying she knows her own worth, and that’s good enough for her, but no one else except her office crush recognizes her worth, even though she has constantly outsmarted them and proved her worth?
Because in her daydream, she has no conception of SHIELD happening. This daydream takes place at the SSR, and she knows that when she comes out of her daydream, she’s still going to be where she started. So the daydream ends the same way it began, as far as her work goes. A bunch of coworkers who don’t respect her as an equal.
So she starts and ends each season almost the same way she started, quietly back at work at the SSR, with the exception of a transfer to Los Angeles to be near Sousa in S2. Which might mirror her considering a transfer in S2, and this daydream is the way of trying it out for size?
Jarvis While Howard is on the run in S1, he leaves Peggy - not with his legion of lawyers or investigators or their investigative tools - but with his butler. Who also follows Peggy’s orders and acts essentially as her sidekick. Her Bucky, her junior agent.
Am I saying she imagined Jarvis? Nope! We know he exists because Tony named his AI after Jarvis. I’m saying that she might have met Jarvis once or twice and she incorporates him into the daydream because she needs someone outside of the SSR, who has ties to Howard, and who will do what she says and can come through in a pinch. She might know that he’s married - but doesn’t know much about his wife - i.e., why we don’t see her in S1. So she imagines him to be what she needs to solve the case. This also indicates that each season is a different daydream - she didn’t know Jarvis’s wife in S1 because she didn’t yet know enough about his wife to imagine her well enough yet, only meeting her after S1′s daydream and thus including more about her in S2.
Michael The daydream theory also explains the set-up for Michael to return. The writers left it open-ended, but they implied that HE was the “M Carter” in the file, meaning he was alive after all.
But what if he isn’t? What if Peggy just daydreams that he might be alive. That there might be some sort of Russian program like she encountered in S1 with Faustus that might have taken her brother? In her daydream, she has the chance to rescue him. She would have saved him, they would briefly have been happy - or had the hope of it - and then he would have gone off before the end of the season again, and things would have gone back to being the same at the SSR, only this time with the hope of seeing Michael again, alive and more or less well. She’s setting herself up for another daydream, this time where she gets to save her brother.
Angie It would also explain why Angie didn’t feature more in S2. Plenty of people have noticed it was odd that Angie wasn’t in LA for acting and was written out of the show until pressure convinced them to feature Angie in at least one scene (the musical scene - a daydream within a daydream). But when you’re daydreaming about a different place, you tend to also cut back on which people you know would be there and then daydream entirely new people - both heroes and villains. So it would kind of make sense, right? Angie might have been a friend or a roommate in S1′s daydreams, but they aren’t close enough (assuming Angie found out about Peggy’s spy career in a daydream and still doesn’t know IRL) that they’re besties, and thus Peggy daydreams a different crew for her LA daydream adventures.
Jason Wilkes & the love triangle There were also complaints about the love triangle in S2, but if Peggy is daydreaming, it makes sense that there would be some romance to her daydreams, even daydreams where multiple people love her at once. Hell, her crush died, her last daydream was about getting over him and letting go, and now she’s bored of that sad crap and ready to daydream about something new. Working how crushes might work with different people, deciding which one she wants to follow up on... Peggy might have preferred to weigh the options in her mind, which is not only fine, but smart. Consider before engagement, etc.
As for Jason Wilkes, if the show is really just a collection of Peggy’s daydreams (S1, S2...) then he makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE. People have talked since the show came out about the show’s problem with white feminism, but this explains why. Because it’s from Peggy’s POV. She isn’t going to know enough or understand enough to portray racism realistically in the late 1940s. She might have heard things, she might even have witnessed some things (the MCU likes to gloss over the brutality and ugliness of racism), but she has never been seen seeking to understand the depth of racism the same way she seeks to understand the depths of sexism, because one of these doesn’t apply to her. So her daydream version of Wilkes lacks the more subtle presentations of racism. Outright racism? She’s there, calling it out and being an ally. But as the writer of the linked article (which is incredible, btw) points out, there’s no way that some people at the SSR wouldn’t be outright racist, and no way others wouldn’t be at least a little bit prejudiced. I posit that we don’t see that because the daydreams are from Peggy’s POV. She doesn’t see them as racist, she doesn’t see the microaggressions, the subtleties, the intricacies, and thus, she doesn’t think to put them in her daydreams, glossing over them the way so many people gloss over ugly things they don’t understand, things that make them feel awkward and uncomfortable, and thus things that they don’t want to see or address.
The technology Peggy has access to all sorts of technology, thanks to the SSR and Howard. Do we ever see it outside of the show? It doesn’t turn up in the movies, as far as I’m aware, and I haven’t watched enough of Agents of SHIELD to know if it turns up there. But Peggy grew up in the golden age of science fiction and worked at the SSR. She would have been able to imagine these weapons for herself. And it’s no surprise that Zero Matter tied in to Doctor Strange, because dark matter isn’t an entirely new concept.
The one-shot I think the Agent Carter one-shot is canon and was always meant to BE canon. The problem is, both the show and the one-shot are set in 1946. When they were writing the series, though, McFeely said he wanted Peggy to grind away in the SSR for a while longer, that they didn’t want her set up SHIELD that fast.
But if the show is just a daydream, it still allows for both to be true. S1 would be her daydream in S1 before Howard sets up SHIELD. She imagines herself working for a different boss - Dooley, who dies respecting her and her skills. Meanwhile, her boss IRL, Flynn, is never so much as mentioned.
Then there’s the S2 daydream, taking place later in the year, where she thinks about transferring to LA to be with Sousa, who has already transferred.
There was going to be another daydream, where she rescues her brother, but then the phone call comes in, and, knowing her skills and built up on heroic fantasies where she’s more than equal to the task of taking out one little gang, she takes on a mission Flynn didn’t want her to take. After that, she’s busy building SHIELD.
I.e., the show wasn’t cancelled so much as Peggy had to wake up and go to work.
Flaws with the theory I’m sure there are some? I’m interested to see what other people think. LET’S DISCUSS.
