#if phil doesn’t want to do big official things but he wants to be sponsored by creepy hotels and startup apps then go off sir
straggy-luvs-u · 3 years
Note
ok i have a couple of theories about why phil isn't there actually
1) youtube now "favours" dan over phil bc dan is The One Gay British Youtuber™️ ya know? BIG was a huge hit, it came out at the same time as eugene lee yang's masterpiece of a pride video too, they accidentally promoted eachother! youtube looked at this and decided that dan, now, is the representative of queer ppl on yt (in the UK at least) and rolled with it ever since. a part of me thinks phil wasn't even asked to be there :/
2) phil declined. this is v possible, my reasoning? "keep it lowkey". he never wanted to share this much of himself with oursiders in the first place, he's really only comfortable being super gay with us bc we're his audience, he doesn't want the attention!!
3) dnp dont want to be seen together in the public eye...yet
so ya idk🤔
i am a simple woman i see an ask from may and i go :D A Win For The Bisexuals and then i see it’s not only a long ask, they’re talking to me about the New Thing and i go :D A True Win For The Bisexuals
i was totally thinking the same thing as 1) and like kinda it bothers me a little? (which is stupid cause it’s none of my business) cause that’s what i feel like is probably the case and it just kinda irks me that despite phil making content regularly (also big gay pride vibes) it seems like people kinda like put him on the back burner, but that brings me to 2). because that would make a lot of sense and i honestly hope that’s what it is!
i can have as many opinions as i want but they don’t actually matter and what actually does is whether they’re both happy or not with what they’re doing; if phil doesn’t want to be in the spotlight then i’m glad that he’s not! i think the fact that we don’t really know exactly how he feels about that kinda stuff we’ll never really know if he isn’t being chosen for this kinda stuff or if he just chooses not to. so i honestly should stop caring and just accept things at face value instead of thinking about all the other possibilities. and yes i agree with 3) 🥲

Tony Romo’s wild week, Phil Mickelson’s funny chat with Larry David, and my meeting with Tiger Woods(!) – Golf Digest
Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we may never wash our right hand again. Yep, that’s right, it happened. After more than a decade of lurking around Tiger Woods, I finally got an official introduction to the GOAT. And a couple co-workers were able to document this historic occasion:
No, I won’t reveal what we were talking about. That’s private. I also can’t remember because it was such a blur. But basically, it was just two dudes yucking it up over golf. No big deal. Kidding. It was a BIG deal. And Tiger, I was also kidding about not washing my hand since our encounter. Totally kidding … I swear … so let’s do it again sometime. In the meantime, here’s what else is going on in the world of golf.
WE’RE BUYING
Cameron Champ: I wasn’t expecting the end of the Safeway Open to get me to cry, but there I was tearing up watching a young golfer hug his father in celebration while on the phone with his dying grandfather, PaPa Champ, who got him into the game. What a moving scene. As someone whose own grandfather did the same (RIP Poppa Myers), it hit me about as hard as Champ hits a golf ball.
Tumblr media
Daniel Shirey
Speaking of which, Champ became just the eighth golfer in the past 20 years to win a PGA Tour event while leading the field in driving distance and scrambling. And he showed off both those aspects of his game on the 72nd hole with a 369-yard drive down the middle and a beautiful chip to set up his winning birdie.
https://twitter.com/PGATOUR/status/1178478887271096321
That was a special moment, and Champ is a special player. And with the Sanderson Farms rooster to go along with the Safeway Open wine barrel, he’s got quite a special trophy collection already.
Tony Romo: I’ll admit, I thought the Tony Romo PGA Tour experience had worn out its welcome a bit with him accepting his fourth sponsor’s exemption into an event where he had no local ties. But Romo had the sports world talking (Hence, why tournaments keep inviting him) following an opening 70 that put him in great shape to make the cut. Romo beat his first-round playing partners—PGA Tour members Beau Hossler and Michael Gellerman—by a combined 10(!) shots on Thursday. How ‘bout that Cowboy!
Tumblr media
Jonathan Ferrey
Of course, his Friday performance, a four-over 76, wasn’t quite as spectacular, but Romo did beat a dozen tour pros even while missing the cut. He returned to his day job for CBS on Sunday, and after watching parts of that Bears-Vikings game he and Jim Nantz were forced to sit through, I can see why the former QB wanted to get out of work so badly.
Rory’s bunker lessons: A couple weeks ago, Rory McIlroy gave Justin Timberlake a bunker lesson. Now Timberlake is doing things like this:
https://twitter.com/EuropeanTour/status/1177222413760835584
Sign me up for a lesson, Rors.
WE’RE SELLING
Rory’s “course setup” complaints: I love Rory McIlroy. I love that he speaks his mind. I just think in this case, he’s not properly representing the whole story. McIlroy roasted the European Tour for its easy setups, but the timing was bad considering he had just finished the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which is a pro-am. A pro-am in which Rory played with his dad, Gerry, who shot a gross 69 (three under) at Kingsbarns!
Tumblr media
Ross Kinnaird
Can you imagine being so good at golf that you complain about a course being too easy? Must be nice, am I right? Also kudos to Gerry for carrying his son to a T-1 finish in the team competition. Sadly, the McIlroys lost on a tiebreaker to Tommy Fleetwood and his partner because Fleetwood shot a lower score (64) on Sunday than Rory (67). Way to let your dad down, Rory. Kidding. Sort of.
“Spitgate”: Romo’s score had sports fans abuzz on Thursday, but a shot he hit on Friday wound up setting Golf Twitter aflame. The QB accidentally hit into triple coverage (the threesome in front) on a par 5 with a 3-wood from 278(!) yards to five feet. Then this happened:
https://twitter.com/jasondean2000/status/1177755076028321792
Here’s how PGA Tour rookie Kristoffer Ventura explained it:
https://twitter.com/krisventura95/status/1177799074566696962
We’ll take your word for it, Kris. A (OSU) Cowboy wouldn’t do that to another Cowboy.
“Flipgate”: Former PGA Tour pro and current Korean Tour money leader Bio Kim was suspended for three YEARS for flipping off a fan whose cellphone made noise during a tournament he eventually won:
https://twitter.com/ryanlavnergc/status/1179044209648705537?s=12
Allow me to echo Ryan’s sentiments. A THREE-YEAR ban for this?! Wow. That is harsh. And how about that photo of Kim kneeling before the Korean media begging for forgiveness? Geez, it’s not like he killed the fan with the cell phone. Anyway, let’s just say it’s a good thing Sergio Garcia doesn’t play on the Korean Tour …
ON TAP
The PGA Tour heads to Las Vegas for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, AKA that tournament Smylie Kaufman won. Man, I can’t believe four years have passed since that. Keep grinding, Smylie. Hopefully, you’ll be back on tour full time next year.
Random tournament fact: Patrick Cantlay has won and finished runner-up the past two years in Vegas. That’s a lot of money to play with at the blackjack tables.
RANDOM PROP BETS OF THE WEEK
—Someone will spit on Brooks Koepka’s golf ball this week: 1 MILLION-to-1 odds
—Phil Mickelson will win the Shriners Open: 100-to-1 odds (Actual odds. Wow.)
—Vegas casinos will get a boost this week: LOCK
PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Jonathan Ferrey
Again, what a scene. All the best to the Champs during this bittersweet time.
VIRAL VIDEO OF THE WEEK
This compilation of PGA Tour stars hitting tee shots over the corner of the Old Course Hotel on the famed Road Hole is mesmerizing:

Juuuuust a bit different from this video that made the rounds a couple weeks ago:
https://twitter.com/lads_golf/status/1171368583819157504?s=21
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“No matter if I win one more tournament, 10 more tournaments, whatever it may be, this will be the greatest moment in my golfing career for sure.” —Cameron Champ
THIS WEEK IN CELEBRITY GOLFERS (NOT NAMED TONY ROMO)
Michael Strahan participated in Tiger Woods’ newest charity golf event, the Nexus Cup, and challenged the host to a putting contest on Liberty National’s 18th green. Not only did Woods roll a 20-footer in on his first attempt, but he celebrated like he had just won the Masters. Check it out (40-second mark):
https://twitter.com/GMA/status/1177569369930420224
That and Strahan arguing with Lawrence Taylor over QB sack supremacy were the highlights of the event. Well, other than meeting Tiger. Did I mention I met Tiger?
THIS WEEK IN PHIL BEING PHIL
Mickelson struggled at the Safeway Open, missing the cut in his first event of the 2019-’20 season, but he really stepped up his game when it came to his latest “Phireside With Phil” video.
https://twitter.com/PhilMickelson/status/1176523612532236289
Larry David?! After playing golf (Would that be called a “Round and chat”?) with the comedic legend? Pretty, pretty, pretty good. Yeah, yeah, everyone else already made the same joke, but I don’t care. The part when they talk about Phil’s Hall of Fame jacket was particularly good. Netflix, pick up this show already!
THIS WEEK IN EDDIE PEPPERELL BEING EDDIE PEPPERELL
https://twitter.com/GolfDigest/status/1177670054877507584
He should legally change his name to Eddie PeppereLOL.
THIS AND THAT
M.J. Hur won the LPGA’s Indy Women in Tech Championship by four shots at Brickyard Crossing Golf Club. You could say she “raced away with the title.” Get it? Sorry. … Congrats to Victor Perez on winning his first European Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Perez shot a final-round 70 and still finished (Look away, Rory!) 22 under par. … Five golfers, according to a Reuters report, had their drivers fail tests ahead of the Safeway Open now that the PGA Tour has really started to crack down. Kinda makes you wonder how many hot clubs have been in players’ bags in recent years. … China’s Yuxin Lin won the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, earning an invitation to next year’s Masters. It will be the second trip to Augusta National for the 18-year-old. Impressive. … And finally, Costco had to refund its latest batch of golf balls because they were cutting too easily. Bad job making the balls, but good job reacting by my favorite store. And if they are looking to hire someone for quality control their golf balls, I have just the person:
Tumblr media
My daughter needs to start earning her keep at some point.
RANDOM QUESTIONS TO PONDER
Did anyone test Tony Romo’s 3-wood?
Is Costco ever going to bring back chocolate froyo?
Should I go for the bro-hug with Tiger next time?

My Favorite Netlify Features
👋 Hey folks! Silvestar pitched this post to us because he is genuinely enthusiastic about JAMstack and all of the opportunities it opens up for front-end development. We wanted to call that out because, although some of the points in here might come across as sponsored content and Netlify is indeed a CSS-Tricks sponsor, it’s completely independent of Netlify.
Being a JAMstack developer in 2019 makes me feel like I am living in a wonderland. All these modern frameworks, tools, and services make our lives as JAMstack developers quite enjoyable. In fact, Chris would say they give us superpowers.
Yet, there is one particular platform that stands out with its formidable products and features — Netlify. You’re probably pretty well familiar with Netlify if you read CSS-Tricks regularly. There’s a slew of articles on it. There are even two CSS-Tricks microsites that use it.
This article is more of a love letter to Netlify and all of the great things it does. I decided to sit down and list my most favorite things about it. So that’s what I’d like to share with you here. Hopefully, this gives you a good idea not only what Netlify is capable of doing, but helps you get the most out of it as well.
You can customize your site’s Netlify subdomain.
When creating a new project on Netlify, you start by either:
choosing a repository from a Git provider, or
uploading a folder.
The project should be ready in a matter of minutes, and you could start configuring it for your needs right away. Start by choosing the site name.
The site name determines the default URL for your site. Only alphanumeric characters and hyphens are allowed.
Netlify randomly creates a default name for a new project. If you don’t like the name, choose your own and make it one that would be much easier for you to remember.
Tumblr media
The "Site information" section of the Netlify dashboard.
For example, my site name is silvestarcodes, and I could access my site by visiting silvestarcodes.netlify.com.
You can manage all your DNS on Netlify.
If you are setting up an actual site, you would want to add a custom domain. From the domain management panel, go to the custom domains section, click on the "Add custom domain" button, enter your domain, and click the "Verify" button.
Now you have two options:
Point your DNS records to Netlify load balancer IP address
Let Netlify handle your DNS records
For the first option, you could read the full instructions in the official documentation for custom domains.
For the second option, you should add or update the nameservers on your domain registrar. If you didn’t buy the domain already, you could register it right from the dashboard.
Netlify has a service for provisioning DNS records called Netlify DNS.
Once you have configured the custom domain, you could handle your DNS records from the Netlify dashboard.
Tumblr media
The "DNS" section of the Netlify dashboard.
If you want to set up a dev subdomain for your dev branch to preview development changes for your site, you could do it automatically. From the Domain Management section in the Settings section of your site, select the dev branch and Netlify would add a new subdomain dev for you automagically. Now you could see the previews by visiting dev subdomain.
Tumblr media
The "Subdomains" section of the Netlify dashboard.
You could configure a subdomain for a different website. To achieve this, create a new Netlify site, enter a new subdomain as a custom domain, and Netlify would automatically add the records for you.
As an icing on the DNS management cake, Netlify lets you create Let’s Encrypt certificates for your domain automatically... for free.
You can inject snippets into pages, which is sort of like a Tag Manager.
Snippet injection is another excellent feature. I am using it mostly for inserting analytics, but you could use it for adding meta tags for responsive behavior, favicon tags, or Webmention.io tags.
Tumblr media
The "Snippet injection" section of the Netlify dashboard.
When inserting snippets, you could choose to append the code fragment at the end of the <head> block, or at the end of the <body> block.
Every deploy has its own URL forever.
Netlify creates a unique preview link for every successful build. That means you could easily compare revisions made to your site. For example, here is the link to my website from January this year, and here is the link from January last year. Notice the style and content changes.
In his talk, Phil Hawksworth calls this feature immutable, atomic deploys.
They are immutable deployments that live on forever. — Phil Hawksworth
I found this feature useful when completing tasks and sending the preview links to the clients. If there is a person in charge of handling Git-related tasks, like publishing to production, these preview links could be convenient to understand what to expect during the merge. You could even set up the preview builds for every pull request.
Netlify allows for the cleanest and most responsible A/B testing you can do.
If you ever wanted to run A/B tests on your site, you would find that Netlify makes running A/B tests quite straightforward. Split testing on Netlify allows you to display different versions of your website from different Git branches without any hackery.
Tumblr media
The "Split testing" section of the Netlify dashboard.
Start by adding and publishing a separate branch with desired changes. From “Split testing” panel, select which branches to test, set a split percentage, and start the test. You could even set a variable in analytics code to track which branch is currently displayed. You might need to active branch deploys if you didn't do this already.
Netlify’s Split Testing lets you divide traffic to your site between different deploys, straight from our CDN network, without losing any download performance, and without installing any third party JavaScript library. — Netlify documentation
I have been using A/B testing on my site for a few different features so far:
Testing different versions of contact forms
Displaying different versions of banners
Tracking user behavior, like heatmaps
If you want to track split testing information, you could set up the process environment variable for this purpose. You could learn more about it in the official documentation. The best part? Most A/B testing services use client-side JavaScript to do it, which is unreliable and not great for performance. Doing it at the load balancer level like this is so much better.
There are lots of options for notifications, like email and Slack.
If you want to receive a notification when something happens with your Netlify project, you could choose from a wide variety of notification options. I prefer getting an email for every successful or failed build.
Tumblr media
The "Notifications" section of the Netlify dashboard.
If you are using Gmail, you could notice "See the changes live" link for every successful build when hovering your message in Gmail inbox. That means you could open a preview link without opening the email. There are other links like "See full deploy logs" when your build have any issues or "Check usage details" when your plan is near its limits. How awesome is that?
Tumblr media
Netlify email notifications include a preview link.
If you want to set up a hook for third-party services, all you need is a URL (JWS secret token is optional). Slack hooks are built-in with Netlify and could be set up within seconds if you know your Slack incoming webhook URL.
Conclusion
All of the features mentioned above are part of the free Netlify plan. I cannot even imagine the effort invested in providing a seamless experience as it is now. But Netlify doesn’t stop there. They are introducing more and more new and shiny features, like Netlify Dev CLI for local development and deploy cancelations. Netlify has established as an undoubtedly game-changing platform in modern web development of static websites, and it is a big part of the growth and popularity of static sites.

Your Monday Morning Roundup
The weekend began with blowouts for the Phillies before things got better on Sunday.
The Brewers scored 12 runs on 13 hits in each of their two wins over the Phils on Friday and Saturday. Ryan Braun homered twice Friday night, while Ji-Man Choi recorded his first ever grand slam off Luis Garcia on Saturday.
So with Zach Eflin on the mound yesterday afternoon, the Phils avoided an embarrassing sweep with a 4-3 win. Eflin led the way with a nine strikeout performance. The Phillies scored all of their runs Sunday on either walks or plays that resulted in an out. So the offense, which recorded four hits, is still struggling.
The miserable road trip out west continued at home this weekend. After a hot start to the season, are the Phillies falling back to Earth? Rhys Hoskins came back Saturday and hit a three-run homer, which was the second best thing to happen this weekend for the team. Other than that, it wasn’t fun.
Well except for the reunion of the 1993 team sans Dutch, Lenny Dykstra, and Jim Fregosi. Curt Schilling, a former teammate of Gabe Kapler when they were with the Red Sox, still keeps in touch with the current Phillies manager:
Schilling says the two have texted each other frequently this season.
“I have been texting him all year, back and forth, been in his ear a little bit and trying to find from my side what it is like and what he is going through,” Schilling said.
Kapler was second-guessed in his first game as manager when he pulled Aaron Nola with a 5-0 lead, a runner on second and one out in the sixth inning after the righthander had thrown just 68 pitches in an eventual 8-5 loss to the Braves.
“I was laughing because I am a pitcher and I was offended when he went out there and took his pitcher out after five or six innings,” said Schilling, a noted workhorse who had 83 career complete games. “But he is never going to make the same mistake twice, and I think that is a huge thing. He is accountable.”
The Phils have a day off today to regroup. They’ll start a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Citizens Bank Park Tuesday night. After that, they’ll see the Brewers again, but this time in Milwaukee.
In two weeks, the team will play in Washington against the Nationals. For some reason, the game was picked for Sunday Night Baseball:
The Phillies-Nats game on June 24 has been picked for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. It’ll be the Phillies’ first time on since April 21, 2013.

The Roundup:
The Sixers can finally move on from “Collargate.” They’ll have a number of draft prospects coming in today, including Miles Bridges and Lonnie Walker IV. Mikal Bridges will workout for the team tomorrow.
Kevin dives into prospects the team might take with the 26th pick.
Some final “Collargate” stuff. Woj mentioned Bryan Colangelo wanted to get rid of Brett Brown and replace him with either Mike D’Antoni or Jay Wright. What if.
The big question is who will replace the man with the big collars? Brett Brown will assume Colangelo’s role until a permanent GM is found.
Speaking of Bryan Long Collars, Game of Zones and the Malamut brothers did a great job of mocking him and the entire burner account saga.
There’s video of Markelle Fultz shooting on his back, which matches what “Still Balling” tweeted out.
Finally, Joel Embiid is officially on LeBron recruiting mode:

The Eagles are off today, but start mandatory minicamp tomorrow, which runs through Thursday. They had some fun this weekend at the Kenny Chesney concert:

So much for the team “abandoning their fans” last week. Stupid politics.
Everyone on the team wants to win another Super Bowl, including Brandon Graham, who enters this season on the final year of his current contract.
One of the new guys on the team is wide receiver Mike Wallace. He’s in love with the playbook:
“There’s enough to go around for everybody,” Wallace said. “So that’s what makes it great. It’s not just one guy do this. … Just studying my playbook, I got excited. I can see why they score so many points. The type of plays they have, it’s hard for us to learn, so I know it’s going to be hard for defenses to stop.”
Wallace added that the Eagles can put “anybody in any spot,” and coach Doug Pederson is fond of mixing personnel. Look for that to continue this season with the depth the Eagles have assembled on offense. There will be times when they play heavier packages with two tight ends after the addition of Dallas Goedert. They can spread teams out with four wide receivers. They can use multiple running backs, with Darren Sproles as a chess piece. It’s not just one player.
Rasul Douglas had an up-and-down rookie season. He thinks he’s gotten better, but so has the entire cornerback group:
“It’s just hard,” Douglas said this week about the crowded corner situation. “We all come here with the same goals to compete, and be the guys who play a lot of snaps, but we all don’t use that as a model of [hoping the other guy fails]. We all talk to each other. We’re all tight friends — we do everything together, play video games together, watch film. We’re a family.
“I feel like every spot is open right now. … You’ve got to show the coaches you can play, and that you understand everything mentally. Physically, we’re all in the league for a reason. Mentally, can you sustain the playbook, can you be a guy we can depend on to make plays and be the same person every day?”
Schwartz indicated recently that he sees Douglas as an outside corner. There has been talk that Darby could be traded, but if he is, Jones might have the inside track on replacing him, and Mills seems to have a firm grip on the other outside spot.
“I like myself outside, but I can play anything – I can play safety; I can play corner, nickel — it doesn’t really matter,” Douglas said. “I think [Schwartz] has given everybody a chance at practice one day to play the nickel spot.” Douglas acknowledged that smaller, shiftier players are more likely choices there.
Could the Eagles be interested in two players that might enter the NFL Supplemental Draft?

Could the Flyers target center Jesperi Kotkaniemi, one of the top centers in the NHL Draft, as a option by trading up?

15 to watch April 10 2017
After seemingly the longest drought in sports next to the Chicago Cubs’, Spaniard Sergio Garcia won his first Masters, and his first Major. After 18 years of coming up short at golf’s Majors – a record of 0 for 73 – Garcia bested Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose in a dramatic final round and sudden-death playoff that likely thrilled broadcaster CBS and sponsors IBM, AT&T, and Mercedes-Benz, whose ads benefitted from the additional airtime. Also undoubtedly delighted was Garcia’s primary sponsor TaylorMade, which parent adidas put on the market last year but has struggled to find a buyer; Garcia’s marquee victory may sweeten the pot for a suitor. Masters participants played for $11 million this past week, a $1 million increase from 2016. Garcia, previously a nine-time PGA Tour winner and 13-time European Tour champion, received $1.98 million for his Masters win, up from the $1.8 million paid to Danny Willett last year. A happy ending to a Masters that conquered horrible weather to provide a terrific platform for corporate hospitality and commerce to companies like StubHub…and a nice sum to tuck away in a green jacket pocket.
The Greatest Spectacle in Racing will serve as the IndyCar debut for 22-year-old driver Zach Veach. Veach will drive the No. 40 at the Indianapolis 500 with financial backing from the Indy Women in Tech Championship presented by Guggenheim – the LPGA tournament scheduled for September at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s infield golf course. Veach has six wins and six poles in three Indy Light seasons and was the third-place finisher in 2016. He joins Carlos Muñoz and Conor Daly at Texas-based AJ Foyt Racing; his car number pays homage to Foyt’s fourth Indy 500 triumph in 1977. "The Indy Women in Tech foundation, along with AJ Foyt Racing and Zach Veach, is committed to making positive changes to the communities where we work and live. This sponsorship allows us to shine a global spotlight on meaningful robotics and career transition programs that will develop our workforce through education and job training to support Indy's growing resume for tech innovation,” said Daniel Towriss, President and CEO of Guggenheim Life. A terrific example of cross-promotion between the Indianapolis 500 and the new LPGA tournament in that city, and more importantly, innovative community investment through sport.
Much to the chagrin of many of its top stars, the NHL has officially announced that it will not be sending its players to PyeongChang for the 2018 Winter Olympics. According to the Boston Globe, this means that the NHL’s streak of participating in five consecutive Olympic cycles, dating back to 1998, is set to be snapped. The NHL made the final decision without coordinating with the IOC or the NHLPA. Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin insisted that he will still represent Russia next winter, regardless of the NHL’s stance. Players from all other professional hockey leagues around the world are still allowed to participate as of now, making the NHL the only one to have withdrawn thus far. In a statement following the decision, the IOC wrote, “This must be a huge disappointment for the players who definitely wanted to play. The decision is even more regrettable, as the [IIHF] had offered the same conditions to the NHL as at previous Olympic Games.” Tough decision for Gary Bettman and the NHL, but the right one. Unlike the NBA, the NHL would have to suspend its season for a long period of time; the NHL has made major commitments to the Olympic movement and as a positive experience from the World Cup to grow the game.
With new NFL stadiums set to be built in Los Angeles and Las Vegas in the coming years, naming rights records could be rewritten. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Gemini Sports Group believes that the Raiders’ stadium “could fetch between $15-$18 million a year over 20 years” from a corporate partner. In Los Angeles, the Rams-Chargers stadium is expected to bring in up to $20 million annually, but could potentially reach $30 million a year driven by hosting two teams and “its location in the country’s second-biggest market.” The Rams have already hired Legends Global Sales to sell the naming rights for their Inglewood stadium, which is set to open for the 2019 NFL season. The biggest naming rights deal in North American sports currently is MetLife’s contract with the New York Giants and Jets, which pays out $16-$25 million a year. With the economy improving, digital media values increasing, and corporate hospitality becoming more significant, look for a major deal in L.A. to then be emulated in Vegas.
Despite claiming to be a historic “soccer city,” St. Louis will not be awarded an MLS team anytime in the foreseeable future after voters rejected public stadium funding. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, city voters voted against funding a 22,000-seat MLS stadium in downtown, yet voted in favor of “imposing a half-cent sales tax increase for expanding the city's MetroLink light rail system.” About 53% of voters were opposed to the MLS bid, while 60% approved of the MetroLink ballot; both propositions “needed to pass in order to fund the stadium.” MLS Commissioner Don Garber noted the other week that without funding and concrete plans for a new stadium, St. Louis “would not get a team.” SC STL, the club that was set to be promoted to the MLS pending approval, spent over $1 million to date through a PAC on both propositions, “promising jobs for the city, massive private investment and a big return on public investment.” A set back for MLS, and a public/private partnership that requires restructuring or starting over. Clearly, the St. Louis region is reassessing the economics of the sports business.
With plans to officially relocate to Las Vegas, Oakland Raiders Owner Mark Davis spoke about his “frustration and sadness” over the issue. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Davis said, “I’m not celebrating anything like I would like to be…I still have a feeling for the fans in the Bay Area. And I’ve met with a number of them. And anything I say to them isn’t going to soothe them, and it makes this whole thing bittersweet.” Davis noted that he spoke with the MLB Oakland A’s about doing a joint stadium deal with them and selling them 20% of his franchise as part of the transaction, but ultimately “Oakland never presented a viable plan to keep the team.” Back in 2013, the Raiders began talks about trying to find a new stadium in Oakland with the A’s, but those talks failed when the A’s signed a 10-year lease to stay in the Coliseum. Now it is Oakland’s turn to “save” its last remaining professional franchise. The Oakland A’s stadium process takes on new political, economic, and psychological significance.
Highlighting a continued shift in the dynamic of live sports steaming, Amazon is set to take over the streaming of “Thursday Night Football” as part of a one-year deal with the NFL. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Amazon’s one-year deal is worth $50 million – a massive spike from the $10 million Twitter paid this past season. Amazon will livestream 10 “TNF” games carried by CBS and NBC after beating out Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for the rights. “Amazon has wanted to put sports rights on its Amazon Prime video service, and the NFL deal will allow the company to do that, essentially putting the streams behind a paywall where they will only be available to Amazon Prime subscribers.” Twitter’s one-year deal with the league is considered to be a success, as games averaged 265,000 viewers on an average minute basis during the season, but Amazon is expected to have a wider reach. New media companies are all positioning themselves to assess their role as major media players in subsequent bidding cycles for major league rights in the future.
After months of swirling rumors and questions regarding what jersey Tony Romo will wear next season, it turns out that the now-former-quarterback will be wearing a suit and tie on Sundays for the foreseeable future. According to SportsBusiness Journal, CBS Sports formally announced Romo as their lead NFL game analyst, meaning that he will hang up the cleats and pads going forward to assume a reporting role. Romo will take the place of Phil Simms beginning in the 2017 season despite having no prior on-air experience; Simms’ position with CBS Sports is up in the air after spending nearly 20 years with the network. When asked if he ever plans on returning to football, Romo said, “You never say never. I'll just say it's about 99 percent.” He also noted that he “doesn't envision coming back but expects to get calls from teams.” Another professional athlete goes to the broadcast booth. Salaries for “athletes turned broadcasters” continue to increase as the names become more significant.
Sitting right in the heart of Chicago, DePaul University’s new Wintrust Arena is set to open this fall “with a pair of gala fundraisers.” According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the 10,000-seat, $164 million arena that will host both DePaul men’s and women’s basketball teams is expected to attract nearly triple the number of fans who have become accustomed to making the trek to All-State Arena in Rosemont. Wintrust Arena Assistant General Manager/Entertainment David Kennedy is excited about the facility’s ability to attract events to McCormick Place. “We’re not really competing with the United Center, Soldier Field or Wrigley Field that have tens of thousands of folks,” said Kennedy. “We have the flexibility to shrink the venue down a little bit to what they call a half-concert for a few thousand people or to go to the larger number of 7,000 to 9,000.” The goal is to book 50 events in the first year – Kennedy noted they are more than halfway there. Chicago becomes the next city to complement its major league professional arena with another economically viable facility.
With the state of North Carolina deciding to repeal HB2, the NCAA has officially lifted its championship ban on North Carolina. According to the Charlotte Observer, the state has faced sharp criticism ever since it passed HB2, a bill that nullified a Charlotte LGBT nondiscrimination ordinance that, “among other things, allowed transgender people to use bathrooms based on their gender identity.” The NCAA is currently picking future championship sites for 2018-2022; Charlotte is “bidding to host men’s basketball tournament games” at Spectrum Center for three years – 2020-2022. The championship sites awarded for next year are final, meaning that Charlotte is still set to host “the first and second rounds of the men’s basketball tournament at the Spectrum Center in March 2018.” Meanwhile, Texas is still facing similar bans to North Carolina after passing an HB2-like legislation of its own earlier this year. From a political perspective, sports should be viewed as big business. Cities and states have lost conventions, concerts, and major sporting events because of the unpopular political stances they have taken. Just like Arizona and its Martin Luther King holiday, communities receive the benefits of the events after they change their political positions.
Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson has owned companies in industries such as aerospace and technology, but his newest venture is in sports. According to CNBC, Virgin Sport, a two-year-old company that is set to run its first event in the coming months, is officially ready to pursue sponsors. “Sponsors [often] get involved in something that already fully exists, so [our] partners have a great chance to start out,” said Virgin Sport Global CEO Mary Wittenberg. “We will go fewer rather than more partners and try and integrate partners across our events, our content and eventually our community.” “Festival-style events” will be run in the United Kingdom and United States, with the first event coming in London. The aim of Branson’s new company is to “reach the sweet spot” between extreme events such as Tough Mudder and lighter events such as a “fun run.” This marks the first of many new entries into the entertainment/festival space by companies expanding their consumer reach.
After receiving a large amount of criticism, the Big Ten has decided to cut back its Friday night broadcast schedule for this upcoming football season. According to ESPN.com, “a long list of parties” have been complaining to the conference ever since it announced that its TV partners “would start to broadcast games on Friday nights, including six contests after the opening Labor Day weekend of the 2017 season.” Of those six games originally intended on being played on a Friday, two of them have already been rescheduled for a Saturday timeslot. Friday night games traditionally draw lower ratings than their Saturday counterparts due to a general lack of interest, along with conflicts with primetime high school games and other sporting events. Many mid-major conferences have historically played games on Friday nights because they are often overshadowed by the Power Five conferences on Saturdays. No doubt a trend reversal. Many leagues and conferences attempt to identify “open times in their schedules.” In this case, it may be the pushback is more than was anticipated.
Some big names are emerging as potential bidders to purchase the Miami Marlins. According to Fox Business, among those who have expressed interest in buying the team are former MLBer Derek Jeter and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Jeter is “being represented in talks” with Marlins President David Samson by former Morgan Stanley Wealth Management President Gregory Fleming. Conversely, Bush has teamed up with Citigroup to finance his possible bid. The third group that could potentially submit a bid is reportedly being back by Goldman Sachs. While the Marlins’ ownership group has made it clear they are willing to sell the franchise, they also noted that they may ultimately decide “not to sell the team if they can’t get an offer close to $1.6 billion.” Both Jeter and Bush are big names, but financing remains the key element in this potential transaction. The Marlins “auction process” might yield significant numbers, especially with the publicly-funded stadium and the World Series legacy.
The deteriorating condition of the iconic Aloha Stadium in Halawa, Hawaii, has “led consultants to suggest building a smaller, more modern” facility to replace the current structure. According to KGMB-CBS, the 50,000-seat stadium originally opened up in 1975 and has required significant upkeep costs since then. While Aloha Stadium only cost $37 million to build at the time, nearly $100 million has been spent since 1990 on facility upgrades. The suggested replacement facility has a recommended capacity of 30,000 to 35,000 seats and would be built adjacent to the current stadium. The new stadium could “expand to 40,000 seats for special events, and would have a hotel, housing and retail space.” The consulting report added that the new stadium would cost $324.5 million and require 36% “less square footage, reducing operating expenses.” Hawaii has experienced tremendous economic impact through this historical venue. Seemingly, it is time to move on.
Merely weeks before Kentucky Derby race weekend, Churchill Downs unveiled a new $16 million clubhouse renovation. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, the renovation has turned the second-level Clubhouse area at the park from “a large somewhat shabby space into vibrant, welcoming quarters.” A few finishing touches still need to be made before the area will be ready to welcome thousands of visitors on May 5 and 6, but it has opened for local track-goers to pass through. Renovations to the Clubhouse area include more wagering locations, additional concessions stands meant to shorten the lines, and doubling the number of bathrooms. Track officials said that the modernization has “encompassed most of the 95,000-square-foot Clubhouse area and was designed to improve the track experience for the roughly 13,000 guests that typically enter the space on Oaks or Derby Day.” Facility renovation and modernization is critical in all sports – even ones whose primary athletes have four legs. Look for increased economic impact and long-term stability as a result.

BMX Rider Rolls Hard with Type 1

BMX Rider Rolls Hard with Type 1
We've talked to all sorts of athletes over the years, from skiers to swimmers to football players. But today, we are introducing our first-ever BMX racer! Matt Neal is 30 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just a few years ago at age 28. Despite his fairly recent diagnosis, Matt isn't letting diabetes slow him down. For those who are as unfamiliar with the sport as we are, BMX is short for "bicycle motocross" and it's a form of extreme bicycle riding involving off-road racing on an obstacle course, complete with sharp turns and dangerous hills. Not for the faint of heart!
Matt has been BMX racing since he was a kid and he's continuing to pursue his passion as a competitive athlete in Mesa, AZ. He recently founded Team Type 1 BMX, which as of now is an "unofficial" part of Team Type 1. That means they use the Team Type 1 logo and name, but Team Type 1 as an organization does not manage the BMX team. They plan to become more formally merged next year.
We chatted with Matt about the literal and figurative ups and downs of living with diabetes while BMX racing:
DM) How did you get into BMX racing?
MN) I have been very active my entire life. I always enjoyed being outside and playing sports when I was a kid. I went to school with a few kids that raced BMX and I enjoyed riding with them after school. I kept bugging my parents to let me start racing with them. Finally, my dad took me out to the BMX track for my 10th birthday. I was hooked! I loved racing and started taking it more seriously after a couple of years.
I was very fortunate to be able to travel around the country racing different events. I was even more fortunate to experience a great deal of success in the sport that I loved. I was top 10 nationally in my age group for several years and I even got second place at the BMX World Cup when I was 18. I turned pro for a few races at the end of my career before hanging my bike up to finish my degree.
What happened when diabetes entered the picture?
Fast forward about eight or nine years and I got the itch to get back on my bike. I started riding again and went to a couple of national events. I was riding decently for not racing for so long but I was a little off. I didn't feel like I had the power that I should and I started losing weight. A LOT of weight. I couldn't gain a pound to save my life, and I knew something was wrong.
I completed a health screening at work and my fasting blood glucose was 358 — and my fears were confirmed. I had diabetes. I was officially diagnosed February 20, 2009, with type 1 at the age of 28. Believe it or not, I felt very fortunate to have a manageable disease. I took some time off of my bike again to get a handle on my blood glucose, and I knew I wanted to race again. So that's exactly what I did! I started racing at the beginning of the 2010 season.
When did the idea for diabetic BMX team come into play?
When I was diagnosed I knew I wanted to turn my diagnosis into something positive. BMX has been such a big part of my life and I thought I could use the sport to inspire others living with diabetes as well as help educate others about the disease. So I decided to start a team. At first, it was myself and three friends who I grew up racing with.
I was at a national race in Tucson, AZ in August of last year having dinner with my wife. I was wearing a DESA shirt that said "I run on insulin" on the back. A girl approached me as we waited for our food and asked if I had diabetes. I told her I did and she said her brother did as well. I went to their table and met Owen. He was 11 years old at the time and was racing BMX with type 1 diabetes, just like me. I chatted with Owen and his mom and explained what I was doing with the team for the 2011 season. They were very interested and we exchanged information.
This is basically how the team has grown. Someone sees one of the riders wearing our gear and asks about the team or sees an article in a magazine or newspaper and contacts me. It has been amazing! We literally grew from five riders, two with type 1 to 11 riders, eight with type 1, and the season isn't even over yet!
How did you hook up with Team Type 1?
I met Phil Southerland, founder and CEO of Team Type 1, at the Tour of California last summer. I explained what I was doing and expressed my interest in being part of his organization. I figured that Team Type 1's mission and mine were nearly identical, so it was a good fit. At the same time, BMX is very different from road racing. BMX is more of an extreme sport and caters to a younger, more family-oriented crowd. Phil was interested in getting his organization involved in BMX but didn't have the funding available to fully support us. As a result, we have been self-funded this year and have our own group of sponsors who have helped us out: Diabetes America, OmniPod, Fly Racing, Adventure Bicycles, JDRF, and Integrated Diabetes Services.
Going back to your "late" diagnosis at age 28, how did you actually handle the transition from a 'carefree life' to a life with diabetes?
I'm still a bit of a newbie! The transition was probably less frightening for me because of my background. My degree is in exercise science so I already knew what a pancreas is, what insulin does, what a carbohydrate is, etc. For me it was simply a matter of figuring out how everything worked for me and my lifestyle. I am thankful I already knew some of the basics before I was diagnosed because it definitely made things easier.
Weren't you nervous that diabetes would impact your racing success?
Diabetes has not impacted my performance at all. I won the second national event that I raced after being diagnosed. I've placed top 3 in every national main event this year with the exception of a few crashes. The main difference now is my pre-race preparation. Before, I could eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted to before a race. Now I am constantly thinking about how much insulin I have on board, approximately how long until my next race, etc. so I can be at close to my target as possible.
But surely diabetes impacts BMX riding in some ways... How do you deal diabetes when competing?
Diabetes does add a whole new challenge to racing BMX. I test my glucose levels a LOT on race days. National races are especially difficult because you don't know exactly when you are going to race and the races take place all weekend long. They are also challenging because my adrenaline tends to raise my BG levels. My target level for race time is 150 mg/dL so I always keep my meter, insulin, and carbs close by.
The main thing I try to do to optimize my blood glucose at races is to make small adjustments. I try to eat small meals and snacks throughout the day to avoid having big spikes or glucose crashes. It also helps so I don't have a really full stomach when I need to race. I tend to have a few extra carbs at breakfast to bring my levels up. If I have a tougher race coming up and I know my adrenaline will be kicking in, I will try to get my blood glucose up to about 120 mg/dL because I know that adrenaline will take it up even higher while I'm warming up. If I know that I have a while before I race I will take a small correction to bring my levels back down to 100 mg/dL and then eat something to pick me back up when my next event gets closer.
After the race day is over, I try to have a few extra carbs at dinner to replenish/refuel and make a small correction to bring my levels back down. I make sure not to over-correct because I tend to run lower the day after, as my body is recovering and using up more glucose.
Do you use a pump or CGM to manage your diabetes?
I use the Dexcom CGM system and OmniPod to manage my glucose levels. It is awesome to have the extra data from the CGM to look at trends. It helps me to keep my levels stable all weekend long and makes it easier for me to be close to my target before all of my events. The OmniPod really helps me fine tune my BG all weekend long and makes it quick and easy to make any adjustments. I am currently the only rider on the team using the OmniPod, although Owen, our 12-year-old, is getting one soon. A couple others are using the Medtronic pump/CGM.
BMX is such a wild sport. Have you or the others had any problems with pumps coming off while riding?
To my knowledge, none of us have had any trouble with the pump coming off during a race. I personally choose to use the OmniPod system so I can place it on different parts of my body when I ride. I usually have it on the back of my arm when I race so there is a smaller chance I will fall on it if I crash. I can share that I've had some pretty crazy crashes and the pump was still attached and working fine when I got up!
What message would you like to convey to our readers? Especially those who might be afraid to do something because of their diabetes?
I always say don't let diabetes stop you from doing anything. Diabetes doesn't have to hold you back or slow you down. If there is something that you want to do, go for it!
Matt will racing the Black Jack Nationals in Reno, NV, Sept. 2-4, while the majority of the Team Type 1 BMX team will be at the US Open Nationals Sept. 30- Oct. 2. If you can't make it out to cheer on the team in person, check out this awesome video of Matt riding BMX!

Your Thursday Morning Roundup
The Houston Astros are the World Champions of Baseball. For the first time in the organization’s history, the Astros hoisted the World Series trophy last night after defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7.
With Houston’s first WS win, these teams are left standing on the wall at the middle school dance:
If Astros win, only these franchises will have no World Series titles: Rays, Mariners, Rangers, Nationals, Brewers. Padres, Rockies.
— Tyler Kepner (@TylerKepner) November 2, 2017
Chase Utley strike out in the 9th inning to cap off an ugly postseason to maybe end his career? He was 0-6 in the World Series and hitless in the entire playoffs.
The game was at Dodger Stadium, so naturally ticket prices skyrocketed:
$117,357: What someone just paid on StubHub, including fees, for two seats in second row behind home plate for Game 7 tonight.
— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) November 1, 2017
Those six-second T-Mobile ads on FOX don’t seem as annoying after looking at that price, huh?
Houston Ace Justin Verlander earned his first World Series ring and will get a wedding band shortly too:
Sources close to the couple confirm: justin verlander and Kate Upton are getting married in a few days. He just got the ring!
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) November 2, 2017
Apparently, another wedding is on the horizon for a fellow Astro as well:
SHE SAID YES!
1 night, 2 rings for Carlos Correa. https://t.co/N4XLUPL6yW

Just a few months until pitchers and catchers report!
The Roundup:
The Sixers were in action last night as well, at home against the Atlanta Hawks. J.J. Redick returned and helped deliver a 119-109 victory for the home fans.
Robert Covington piloted the Philly offense with 22 points. Joel Embiid dropped 21 points in 30 (!!) minutes. Ben Simmons had 19 points including this:

— Kyle Scott (@CrossingBroad) November 2, 2017
The Sixers are now 4-4 on the season, .500 for the first time in 4 years.
Afterwards, Simmons riled up Embiid like a 5-year old who got the toy he wanted in his Happy Meal:
Joel Embiid was so excited about that win that we had to bleep him during his postgame interview with @MSullivanFrench. http://pic.twitter.com/Wg1sL5bhEF
— NBC Sports Philly (@NBCSPhilly) November 2, 2017
Off the court, Jahlil Okafor made it known on Wednesday that he wants out of Philly, by any means necessary:
“He said that he felt that if he bought me out, another team would be getting me for free,” Okafor said. “But that’s where we stand today because you waited so long to trade me. There’s nothing else to do. I’m not playing here and at the end of the season, I’m an unrestricted free agent. So I want to get on the court and play and produce.”
(Via NBC Sports Philadelphia)
Brett Brown states why Okafor is riding the bench.
And although Okafor was seen to be a big part of The Process, it isn’t dead just because his time as a Sixer is all but done, according to our Phil Keidel, who says  don’t put any stock in Eskin’s BS.
In media row at Sixers game, there will be one less person as well-known writer Jake Pavorsky left NJ.com yesterday to explore this thing called a social life.
Someone still in the media game, ESPN’s Jackie MacMullen, wrote a great feature on Joel Embiid yesterday. In part:
“Everybody’s got to stop being scared,” Embiid says. “I’m not made of glass.”’
Anderson understands why the sentiment irks his friend. Nobody wants to be known as the biggest gamble in sports simply because he has yet to prove he can remain upright.

Papa John’s says sales are down. The reason? NFL anthem protests, so they say:
“The NFL has hurt us,” company founder and CEO John Schnatter said. “We are disappointed the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this.”
Executives said the company has pulled much of its NFL television advertising and that the NFL has responded by giving the company additional future spots. Later in the day, a spokesman clarified that the spots themselves weren’t being pulled, just the NFL shield or “official sponsor” designation on those spots.
“Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership,” Schnatter said, noting he thought the issue had been “nipped in the bud” a year and a half ago.
A-Rod texted Jennifer Lopez from the bathroom during their first date. Baller move? Context:
“I didn’t know if it was a date,” Rodriguez says. “Maybe we were seeing each other at night because of her work schedule. I went in uneasy, not knowing her situation.”
He continues: “It would be incredibly productive for me to sit with one of the smartest, greatest women in the world, especially for a guy like me who is coming through tough times, rehabbing himself, re-establishing himself to folks out there. I thought it would be a win-win no matter what.”
Then: “She told me around the third or fourth inning that she was single,” he says. “I had to get up and go re-adjust my thoughts. I went to the bathroom and got enough courage to send her a text.”
“So I’m sitting there and he’s walking back, and I get a text,” Lopez continues. “It says . . . ” She looks significantly at Rodriguez. “You can tell her!” he says. “ ‘You look sexy AF,’ ” she tells me. They both laugh. “And then it took a turn,” Lopez says. “The fire alarm went off, and we had to evacuate.” I laugh, thinking she’s being metaphorical. “No, really,” she says. “The fire alarm went off!”

15 TO WATCH: RICK HORROW]\’S TOP SPORTS/BUSINESS/MARKETING/ENDORSEMENT ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 10
With Jamie Swimmer
