omg i just read the Ty Lee Azula Katara situationship. Well now of course you need to elaborate on Mai. What's her relationship with Azula and Katara like? does Ty Lee have a similar thing with Zuko and Mai, as her other besties? mai for me is someone is who is clinging very VERY tightly to the past, and absolutely refuses to deviate from it. ty lee, azula and zuko are her childhood friends? thats IT. thats all the friends she wants or needs. in her mind any change from that past is bad, wrong, and must be reversed back to safe, normal comfort. this is in part because she was happy and innocent and free right up until tom-tom was born - then she was the spare, seen not heard, not understood by her mother, choked into silence, captivity and an intense depressive state. tom-tom's arrival into her life is so bad that mai goes "ah yes, new people? or My People changing into something i didnt expirence before the age of 12? BAD. KILL WITH HAMMERS." and even though she does love her baby brother, she despises the circumstance he brought her. (she's far more like azula than either of them want to admit. they keep seeing glimpses of themselves in the other, like a shattered reflection of what they could have become - silent and meek, or unloved and monsterous. they never talk about it.)

the fire squad is her one and only support network, and she becomes uncomfortably co-dependant. no one else will do. no one else understands. they're comfortable, normal, the shining happy past that she wants to claw back to. she's loved by them, and understood implicity bc of their shared past. thats all she wants. so she's very, very intensely devoted to them, and especially to zuko. her and azula aren't emotional supports to each other, but they are indeed best friends. they both apprieciate each other's loyalty and stability. mai is comfortable with any change that happens around azula - or Her People - because azula is this steadfast, unmoving pillar in her life. azula values mai highly for her skill, intelligence and general disposition. they're the bitchest besties ever who murder for fun.

SO. if she literally cant handle ty lee, azula or zuko changing into something else. at all. then you can imagine her reaction to katara barrelling in and changing up the vibe of their foursome. mai is outright hostile to katara. she's irritable, grouchy, and does her utmost to pretend katara doesnt exist at all. in her mind, katara is forcing their group to change, taking azula away from their terrible little co-dependency circle. change? bad. threaten the new woman with knives. and quickly. make sure azula is apart from that new woman and back in the safe co-dependency circle. if anything changes - if azula changes - she'll turn into dust.

and on ty lee! she DOES. zuko and mai dating isnt too big a deal for her because they still pay attention to her, and the afformentioned co-dependant stability thing overrides her annoyance that they're not looking and seeing her. but if someone flirts with zuko, or mai? its over. shes throwing a tantrum, getting the person to flirt with HER instead, or flirting with zuko/mai. bc WHY is no one looking at her? helloooo???

mai and ty lee get along famously because mai hates change and people, and ty lee gets to hoard mai greedily to herself. its the perfect arrangement, she can farm all the attention she wants from mai and is guaranteed to it. and mai doesnt care about ty lee wandering off to other friendgroups because she always comes back. and it's funny, ty lee makes things not boring.

Oh god now that toh ends with luz being able to travel between worlds ppl are using that to dunk on amphibia. And now that belos died ppl are using that to dunk on su.

They are different shows people! They have different themes! Amphibia is a classic take on isekai as escapism! Marcy went to amphibia to avoid her real life and while she had fun she didnt mature until after she accepted she needed to embrace change in her life! Anne matured in amphibia bc she always recognized that she has her own life to get back to! Sasha matured after realizing that too! Leaving amphibia for good means to embrace the step out of childhood! Something thats inevitable for everyone!

The owl house is about finding a community in midst of ostracization! Luz stayed in the boiling isles because she found people who accepted her quirks! The boiling isles was in danger from a bigot and luz helps her new community defeat him! Its a very queer story! Community is the center of the story so it makes sense for luz to be able to go back to the boiling isles since shes maintaining her place in the community!

Steven universe is about choosing to be kind! Its that everyone has their own specific traumas that they can overcome with the right support! Its about surviving in a world of bigots at any cost, even if it you have to work with the bigots to carve out a space for the people you love! Because people like you exist and theres nothing anyone in power can do about it! Its also a very queer story! The diamonds can never stamp out the off colors because they will always be there! Steven works with the diamonds not because he likes them but because they can improve the world for his family if only he could get through to them! Hes rewarded for choosing to be kind with success because the theme of the show is hope! Hope that anyone can change! But even though the diamonds stop being fascist steven still doesnt like them because its not about forgiveness! Its about fixing things! Stevens just polite about it!

The owl house starts off with the assumption that everyone can change but its not about the potential its about the willingness to change! The focus is on belos, whos had every chance to turn his life around but will never admit that hes wrong! And the show posits that if someone isnt willing to change theyre not worth helping! Its not about whether or not the character is fascist its about if theyre willing to stop being fascist! Several characters stop being fascist and are welcomed by the characters with open arms belos just wasnt one of them! Several characters clean up their acts but dont adequately address the previous harm they did and are STILL fully forgiven eventually! For toh forgiveness is paired with fixing things you just need to give it time!

And theres an argument that some of these shows didnt do their themes well. If you wanted to portray amphibia as an escapism world that the girls need to leave behind to get to their richer futures then having them get such caring found families go against that by giving them a potential of a good life in the isekai world. Steven universe uses the diamonds as metaphors for mental illness and relationships but its hard to stick with that when you also need to consider the countless other gems they hurt. I think its also fair if people prefer one theme over another.

But a lot of stuff i see comparing these shows just go over surface similarities? Like oh shit! These two shows have the same character archetypes! They have the same inciting incident! This must mean that theyre exactly the same in everything but names and artstyle and are trying to say the exact same things! Like. No. Sometimes,,,,,two stories,,,,,,can talk about two different things,,,,,,,

university mizu x readers where mizu would drop everything or run out of her class to bring something like a book or phone that her s/o forgot will be the death of me. I mean look at mizu. The girl looks so serious all the time but when it comes to you (her s/o) she would be so dang soft.

Gentle gazes, fleeting and subtle touches, and light affectionate way of speaking. Goddd 😭😭 people would not recognize her when shes with you. Shes a whole new different person.

She smiles more, talks more, and laughs more

She's polite to other people but she's ten times more polite to you. Would pull your chair for you, fix your hair when the wind messed it up, lift up the neckline of your shirt when it pulled down too much, and carry your bag (and other stuff you're holding that day) even though it doesnt even have anything in it.

Would insist on holding your bag, she just likes helping you out. She knows you've had a rough day and how much you're studying so much and she wants you to feel that shes always with u and supporting u even in the simplest ways :D

she's not the most verbal person when it comes to saying she loves you but she shows it more than she says it!

You're spending the whole day in class? When she's free and she knows you are too (she has a copy of your sched in her phone), she'd text you to eat outside.

You're walking in the sidewalk? She holds you by the waist and makes sure you're walking beside her on her left and not beside the road.

When your holding your umbrella bcz the sun is burning your skin off, she would wrap her hand around yours and take your umbrella from you so she can hold it for you.

She'll play dumb when you're both doing something. Like maybe you know how to draw and she asks you to teach her how just so you'd hold her hand. i swear to god, you did not see the cheeky smile on her face when you held her hand and taught her how to make light markings on the paper with a pencil.

Second time (out of a lot of times) she did that is when you're playing a video game on a console. And she would repeat the same level over and over and over again just so you would be close to her and teach her over and over again how to play the game and how to use the controller. (its funny how you never noticed she's doing it on purpose, and if you did, you're probably letting it slide for the excuse of being closer to her too)

Also if you're hella stressed at school, you dont even have to tell her. She knows because you, the most talkative person there is, just stops talking and looks spaced out feels kind of scary for her. So she cheers you up by starting a convo with you. She'd bring up your hobby, favorite show, or anything she usually hears you gushing about. She likes hearing you talk about them because she feels how passionate you are about them.

But if you're really tired, she will not force you to talk. She'll just stay with you. If you want her to hold you, she would. If you want to be alone, she'll leave you alone, but you have to tell her. She's not really the best at knowing what to do when you're upset. She doesnt want to do the wrong thing and make you even more upset. But she will do other stuff for you, like make sure you've eaten that day, and maybe encourage u to take a walk outside.

But always remember that she will never force you to do something you dont want to, because she knows you'll be the same to her too :))

You have Félix, who’s the most direct case of “parent thinks that having a child is like a little trophy and checkmark on the list and doesn’t want the child to actually be a person or exist or cause inconvenience.” His father literally didn’t see him as a person and based on the fact that he literally broke Félix’s miraculous he seemed to see Félix as either disposable or unbreakable. There was no sense that he needed to be loved or protected.

But then you also have Adrien, who Gabriel *theoretically* loves. I think Gabriel actually thinks that he loves Adrien as a person. But he has this idea that he can make Adrien happy through obedience alone. He thinks he can just order Adrien to be content or to have the same priorities as him. He calls Adrien melodramatic a few times even and it’s like???

Gabriel *theoretically* wants Adrien to be happy but it doesn’t cross his mind that it’s going to take more than him yelling “hey Adrien i order you to be calm and content.” And ordering Adrien to love the career Gabriel Chooses and love the girl Gabriel Chooses for him and the hobbies that Gabriel Chooses for him. And when that doesn’t work he decides that Adrien is just Beyond His Help and will be better only with his mom there.

And it’s like???? Very fun nuance with this idea of,,, you cannot yell or force someone into being happy,,, it doesn’t matter if you have their best interest in mind,,, if you never listen to what they actually want or see them as a human person then you’ll still be the villian in their story

And THEN!!!!! You have Kagami who’s a completely different case even though she starts with the same circumstance. Because Kagami IS treated like a person and has a good amount of autonomy. It’s just all Conditional. She can do whatever she wants with her life as long as its also exactly what her mother wants. And her mother doesn’t always explain why. And the thing with that is!!! It DOES work for a while!!!! She does trust her mother and actually talk to her about things. And she will defend her mother to the ends of the earth.

But all it takes is that One argument where kagami says “hey . please stop making me date adrien. i dont want to . its hurting me” and tomoe TAKES HER RING instead of listening. And its like. Thats IT.

It doesnt matter if you spent years making a foundation of trust in a relationship because Eventually your kid is Going to grow up and theyre Going to disagree with you on Something Eventually. Kagami was so ready to listen to whatever her mother had to say but her mom didn’t elaborate on anything she just basically said “okay if you wont listen without question you dont get to have autonomy” and of COURSE kagami’s gonna be like. Okay. Bye then.

And i just think it’s soooo cool how there’s these different Layers of “parents forgetting that their child is a person and not a tool for your own personal gain” and that ml shows how it can manifest in so many different ways and it shows that it messes ,up trust and relationships and then it also shows that the kids are all okay once they have love and support and someone who treats them as a person with autonomy

and theres this theme of “it is not too much to ask that you be treated like a human person . no matter how broken or how much of a disappointment you think you are. you are still in the right for demanding to be seen as a person.” And i just. I really love my senti kids i love them soooo much

this show really said “it doesnt matter what sacrifices your parents made for you, youll never be an object that they own” and i just,,, yessssss

The actual fact that bot is literally fighting their mom is wild, EVEN FAN EXPECTED THEM TO FORGIVE EACH OTHER!!

But after all of this, she really didn’t win anything

if we remove her boyfriend, (yinyang) and bff forever and ever (Bot) she sorta doesn’t win much, which really sucks

Anyways… she gets kissed, she immediately shuts it down and us like “???” “this is meant to be platonic,” “sorry that I gave you the wrong impression, but I am not over my ex, and I can't do this”.

So she takes a step away from that friendship, cause that is just not something she needs for herself (2024 is the year of self-realization!!)

But now the guilt is eating her alive, she can't tell Adam cause he won't talk to her, and she can’t tell her brother (Luke) cause she feels he'd get mad. So she tells Rut and his girlfriend, the two of them now being her closest friends, and Rut has a big mouth so he accidentally lets it slip to Luca!!

Luca thinks this whole break thing is bullshit, he thinks Sunny and Adam are meant to be together, and he hates to see the two of them hurting when in reality getting back together and forming a healthy support system would've been a better option.

So he tells his brother!!

Adam immediately sees red, he's confused and mad that she didn't reach out to tell him.

He calls her, and she know the second she hears his voice that he found out, so he starts going on a tangent, and immediately she's like “I will hang up if you don't lower your voice”

He's GAGGED.

“Let's start by communicating properly, you have not talked to me in nearly three months, so let's try this again.”

He's stunned.

And then they talk about it properly, she gets to explain her side of the story, and he perceives it really well and starts profusely apologizing for going at her like that.

He also is sitting in his room all cheesed and smiling at the fact that she basically confessed to him that she was never going to be over him.

He's still mad that said friend of his Kissed his Sunny.

And although the situation sucks and created some drama among the group, this whole moment opened the lines of communication between them and gets them talking again so ultimately they are really happy at the end of the day

“You should just tell him.” Stella told her stressed friend.

“Yeah, Y/n. He would totally understand.” Sylvie nodded in agreement.

“No one can predict how he’ll take it.” Y/n shook her head with a solemn expression.

Stella reached over, putting a hand on Y/n’s shoulder. “Kelly’s not an ass. He won’t judge.” 

“Yeah, no way. I bet he’d be supportive.” Sylvie added, she thought Stella was right. Kelly has a heart of gold, he wouldn’t judge Y/n.

But they both understood why she was nervous, they after all had heard Kelly talking with the guys too.

Y/n decided to take their advice and talk with Kelly, but first she just wanted to try once more with him. Maybe she could get herself to just ‘do it’ and not have to tell him.

Later that night when they were home at their shared place. Y/n decided to try her last ditch effort. So she stepped out in her bathrobe wearing a new set of lingerie. As she stood in the doorway to the hallway she spoke up. “Hey, I got something that I want to show you. So can you come here?”

“The games on you woman bring it out here?” he responded not removing his eyes from the t.v.

“Well, it’s kinda a bedroom activity.” y/n answered with a seductive tone.

Which of course got his attention. “Oh, well then.”

They got pretty far. Entered the bedroom, both of them laughing. Both undressed, well mostly. Kelly layed on the bed, leaning back against the headboard and pillows. Kelly leaned forward kissing Y/n’s neck. As he reached up running his hands up her back, Y/n felt her heartrate pick up. But once he went to unclip her bra, she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t go through with it.

“y/n?” Kelly pulled back when he felt her breathing pick up. “Y/n, are you alright?”

Y/n tried to answer but couldn’t, she realized she was having a panic attack and she’s sure Kelly figured it out to.

“I’m sorry.” She apologized after recovering from the panic attack and calmed her breathing. Y/n buried her head in his chest out of embarrassment.

“Don’t be sorry. But Y/n, we never have to do anything you don’t want to. Never. But I think I deserve and need to know what's wrong. Did I do something?” Kelly wasn’t wrong, he did need and deserve to know. Especially since he didn’t really do anything wrong like he’s thinking.

“I overheard you talking with the guys the other day and-”

“Hey, what you heard, yeah maybe I should of just come straight to you but. Y/n/n, I don’t know what's going on and I needed advice. We keep being inches from having sex and then something happens.” Kelly shook his head pushing her back just enough to look her in the eyes. “I need to know. Did I do something? Are you not ready to take that step yet? What is it?”

Y/n knew she needed to tell him now. Or there might not be a relationship now. “I’m asexual.”

There was a few minutes of silence before he answered. Which made y/n even more nervous.

“That's it?” Kelly furrowed his eyebrows before letting out a breath of relief, giving her a soft sweet smile. “Y/n, if you don’t want to have sex when I’m trying to inicate it then just tell me. If there’s something I can do to make sex more comfortable to you than, please tell me. If I’ve learned anything about relationships it’s that we always need to talk about things. Okay?”

“Okay.” Y/n nodded smiling. Stella and Slyvie were right, he didn’t judge.

hi tysm for ur request I did some hurt/comfort about anxiety and friendship, hope that’s okay! <3 fem!reader

You and James have been walking in silence for the last few minutes. Your eyes are far away, out over the water of the lake. The dirt path crunches loudly underfoot and, besides the soft cry of birds in the distance, it’s the only sound. 

He starts to him to fill the space between you and eventually works his way up to a croaky rendition of Frank Valli. Your suspicious squint softens at his crackly voice, fondness melting your pretty features. You look much more peaceful. 

He offers his hand. 

“What’s eating you?” he asks gently, pleased as punch when you take his hand. He squeezes the four of your fingers with his own and is immensely reassured by their familiar weight, their shape. 

“Nothing, really.”

He nods though he doesn’t believe you. “Over the bridge or home?” he asks. 

You look toward the wooden bridge over the lake’s mouth and shake your head. “Home please.”

He’s saddened but not surprised at your teary eyes on the way back. He sneaks looks at you, perturbed, near distress at the growing glassiness in your eyes, and when the first tear falls a couple of minutes from home he stops and pulls you to one side to wipe it away. 

He’s very careful about it, sleeve over the heel of his hand while he dabs at your cheeks. 

“I’m sorry,” you say weakly. 

“It’s okay. Don’t be sorry.”

“I have something to tell you.”

He feels a horrible skip in his chest. What could you have to tell him that he doesn’t already know?

“Take your time,” he says, frowning at the strangled catch to your breathing. It’s like you’re breathing on manual. Like you’re forgetting to take the next one.

He holds your hand all the way to the front door, all the way to the kitchen table, where he encourages you into a seat. Kettle on, he leans against the counter and watches you tear yourself apart, your nerves and unhappiness evident. 

“Whatever it is, it’ll be okay,” he says. 

“I’m not sure it’s the kind of thing I should tell you, James.”

“If you want to tell me, tell me. I want to listen.”

You tip your head back. A tear races down to your chin and lingers.

“I don’t think I have any friends.”

James knows you. He knows you well. He wants to know everything there is to know about you, and he reckons he’s halfway there, but he’s not sure he knew this. 

“I mean- I have… I have people I talk to but- but nobody like- like Remus. Or Sirius.”

James blinks. He wants to say, Baby, if you want to be friends with those idiots you’ve lost all hope. He wants to say, Baby, if you want to be friends with those idiots then I will make it happen. But it’s not what you mean. Sirius and Remus are people James would kill for. His life wouldn’t be the same without them.

“I think you’re my only friend.”

He abandons the tea to stand by your seat, looking down at your heartbroken face with a creeping sense of uselessness. What can he do? What can he say to that? 

“I meet people and- Even when they’re nice, and- and cool. It’s like I can’t click. I always feel one wrong step from disaster, and-“

“Take a breather,” he says, encouraging your cheek toward his torso carefully. You fall into him, collapsed in relief.

“I can’t make myself what people want me to be,” you say. You sound especially strung out, words a sob into his shirt. You take a huge breath and find some composure. James bites the inside of his lip, because if you want to sob then you should. If you want to cry for days he won’t mind, he can support you. 

He rubs his thumb over the ridge of your shoulder. “Shortcake, you can let it out.”

“I’m just- So sick of feeling like I’m making people angry. I feel like I have to say sorry for talking sometimes… Like I’m always saying the wrong thing.”

James’ eyebrows pinch together. That’s a big leap from your first confession. From the raggedness of your tone, it sounds as though you’ve been holding onto that thought for a while. 

He kisses the top of your head, rubs the tip of his nose against your hairline. You shudder beneath him. 

James shushes you, a quick but kind succession of sound. “It’s alright. It’s alright.” Your hands tangle in the loose fabric of his shirt at the reassurance. “You’re not making me angry, okay?”

“Okay.”

You sound very young. 

He lets you cry it out for a while, his face pressed to the top of your head and arms around your shoulders, holding you together the best that he can. 

“Can I tell you what I think?” he asks eventually, having taken some time to think it over. 

You nod. 

“I think that- that people love you more than you think. But, if you’re feeling like you don’t have people you’re close to, that’s fine, baby.

“I know it’s not the same, but there have been plenty of times where I felt distance between me and the boys. People… change. You’re changing all the time.” He tilts your face up to his, meeting your eyes unflinchingly. “And every time you do, I love you more. One day, you’ll meet people who feel like I do. I promise.”

“You think so?”

“I know so. Not everybody clicks. I haven’t spoken to some of my friends in years and it doesn’t mean I changed for the worse. It’s like us.”

You wince. “What?”

He laughs and strokes your cheek with the side of his pinky finger. “Not like that. Before we met, I had girls. Girlfriends. We didn’t last because we didn’t click. Not like me and you. Friends are just like that, they don’t always work. Doesn’t mean you’re wrong, or that they’re angry with you. And what you said before, about changing, for other people? You don’t have to do that.”

You nod glumly, another sad tear dripping from your chin. He pinches the wetness of off your face and cups both of your cheeks. 

“You worry a lot, Y/N,” he says, lightly chiding. 

You actually giggle at that, self-deprecating as you say, “God, I know.”

He beams. “And by the way? This is exactly the kind of thing you should tell me.”

His argumentative tone, playful but in earnest, has a spark reappearing in your eyes. “No, because,” — you smile sheepishly — “if you want to break up with me-“

“What?”

“- then you’ll think you can’t do it because I only have you.”

His brilliant smile tamps down a touch. He pushes his thumbs over your damp cheeks and sighs out of the corner of his mouth. 

“We aren’t breaking up. Blaspheme like that again and I’ll cry. Ugly cry, and I’ll make you watch.”

“Please do, I won’t feel so embarrassed then.”

James’ hands follow down to your neck, where he laces his fingers behind the nape. “Do you feel better?” he asks. 

You clear your throat. “Yeah, I do. Thank you, Jamie. You always know what to say.”

it is serious. the ship just comes off as nasty to me and i dont understand it

oh, then I'm sorry for being dismissive. I thought you were just a hater lol.

but in all seriousness, if a ship seems nasty to you, then a logical explanation of it is probably not going to change your mind. squicks are just gut reactions, so it doesn't really matter whether or not you understand the thing that squicks you. and that's ok! if the ship makes you uncomfortable, you should just block the rw regicide tag (or in my case you should probably just block me entirely lol )

but since you did ask sincerely, I'll at least try to explain why I ship it:

basically, I'm just a sucker for the 'enemies to lovers' trope and the 'villain redemption' trope. show me any two characters who fit both of those, and I'll probably ship it lol

I like villain redemption, because I like tragic villains. I like villains whose actions are inexcusable, but understandable. villains who lash out due to grief and end up doing horrible things in the throes of rage. and I like making them feel bad about it. I like villains who know they are monsters, who know they have done despicably evil things and truly hate themselves for it. and I like giving them a second chance. I like to see them feel remorse and turn away from evil and try to become better people.

and I like enemies to lovers because... well, for a lot of reasons that would probably take several thesis papers to unpack, lmao. but basically there's just something really intimate about two characters who can handle each other at their absolute worst, when no one else can. arti is like an unstoppable force of rage until she meets scav king, who is like an immovable object to her. he's willing to fight her and kill her as many times as he needs to, but he never strikes first, and he always gives her the chance to back down. and since he does have min aggression and max sympathy, I see him as the type of person who would easily forgive someone who is genuinely remorseful. he doesn't want to keep the cycle of violence and hatred going; whenever arti is ready to let go of her rage and stop the bloodshed, so is he. when she's ready to face the consequences of her actions and try to become a better person, he would rather support her than condemn her. he doesn't necessarily expect his people to forgive her, and he doesn't try to make excuses for her or downplay any of the harm she caused. i just think he could personally look at arti and find someone worth caring about underneath all the rage and hate, and in turn she could look at him and find someone she can trust enough to let all that hate go and admit she was wrong.

obviously, this type of relationship could never happen in real life (or if it did, it would be a fucking toxic disaster). but they're just characters, so their relationship doesnt have to be realistic, and I just want their story to have a happy ending I guess.

idk if any of this makes sense to you, but it's fine if not. you don't always have to understand why people like things that you don't like, it's ok to just block them for your own peace of mind. so if this ship still makes you uncomfortable, feel free to block me, I wouldn't take offense. stay safe and remember that fandom is for having fun , so dont stress out about it too much!

TW// GROOMING, MANIPULATION breaking down tigerheartstar and dovewing and why i think its awful ik I said that I dont really like warrior cats anymore but recently i've been thinking about some stuff regarding the series and its fandom and there's one thing that's been particularly bothering me. dovewing and tigerheart. it's just crazy to see the shift of support for tigerdove considering early 2010s warriors fandom seemed mixed on them. now there seems to be this equivocal support for them, probably because most of the fandom's exposure to the couple has been the recent books which frames them as man who loves his wife x burnt out prophecy kid who will do anything for her malewife. which theres nothing wrong with that dynamic, i think it's cute, but people really seem to forget about how tigerheart straight up groomed and treated dovewing awfully throughout oots and even in tigerheart's shadow. it seems to be a forgotten fact that tigerheart was a full grown warrior by the time he was pursuing dovepaw, who was a newly made apprentice. for perspective, this was a 6-7 moon teenager with someone almost the age of her mentor (a little younger). people try to use the excuse "oh but they're cats" and "the age gap isnt that bad" but even the recent books acknowledge with frostpaw and splashtail, that a warrior and apprentice dating is WEIRD. tbf oots was released in the early 2000s, but the fact that canonically speaking the age gap is seen as a teenager and adult relationship gives me the ick. it really puzzles me to see people get on ships like dustfern and bramblesquirrel (both of which i hate btw) for their age gaps but come up with every excuse in the books to defend tigerdove. its not even just the age gap too, again, their relationship has consisted of tigerheart manipulating and grooming dovepaw to do what he wants. in the first two books (esp the second book of oots) dovepaw is presented as someone who got attached to the cats from the journey and doesnt necessarily understand why they must act like they shouldnt exist anymore due to the borders. this is something that tigerheart LEARNS and actively takes advantage of when dovepaw questions why hes at their borders (tldr its dark forest stuff). he shifts the topic and then goes on about the journey and how he felt that they almost became friends, and that if they were in the same clan things would be easier. this may not seem like a big deal, but this goes on for the rest of their interactions whenever tiger needs to pressure her to do something she doesnt want (meeting up, trusting him, etc.) He realizes that the subject of different borders resonates with her and uses it to his advantage whenever he wants something out of her. This can especially be seen in the next book, “Night Whispers”, which kickstarted their relationship. Dovepaw accidentally ran into ShadowClan territory while hunting, and Tigerheart happens to find her there. Once again, he gives her a speech about borders being meaningless, before asking her to meet up with him before the ShadowClan patrol catches them. There’s also other examples in later books where he coerces her into meeting up or trusting him since “that’s what friends are for” or even later in that book, where he manipulates her into using Ivypaw as a captive for herbs. 

When you take this into account, plus him as a full grown warrior, starting a romantic relationship with a barely apprenticed Dovepaw who is shown as having a childish/ immature perception on romance/mates (such as her argument with Ivypaw and claiming that she should “find her own mate”), Tigerdove feels very much like grooming to me. According to the dictionary definition grooming is, “the action of attempting to form a relationship with a child or young person, with the intention of sexually assaulting them”. Of course, in this case, since it’s a young adult book, it’s to form a romantic relationship, which could also be another goal of grooming. Groomers tend to display manipulative behaviors towards the victims in order to coerce them into trusting them more. Whether that be through compliments, gifts, trying to resonate with them or make them feel special. They tend to try to get them to keep and “share” secrets, which is another tactic they utilize both to isolate the victim and to get them to feel more comfortable. 

A lot of behaviors that Tigerheart displays towards Dovepaw falls under this, including the examples I mentioned. There are a couple of other comments that he makes which come off as creepy such as Dovepaw “being his favorite sister”, which as I established, is something a groomer would say in order to make the victim feel as though they’re special and garner their trust. Which is especially the case when you note that he makes that comment in reference to Dovepaw asking about his ties to Ivypaw, which he actively lies about, and quickly reassures her that there’s nothing going on. 

This tactic of manipulation, where he either makes her feel special, or even love bombs and dissuade her from standing up for herself, doesn’t stop when she’s an apprentice. It continues when she’s a warrior, and is constantly used throughout OOTS and “Tigerheart’s Shadow”. At one point in the series, Dovewing and Tigerheart get into an argument about Dawnpelt wrongfully accusing Jayfeather of murder. When Tigerheart defends his sister, Dovewing stands up for Jayfeather, which prompts Tigerheart to try and manipulate her out of the conversation. He jumps straight to talking about how much he loved and missed her, and guilts her by asking why they had to argue like this, and why they couldn’t just “meet like before”. As for Tigerheart's Shadow, he actively goes against what she wants (to raise her kits outside the clan) and actively pressures and guilts her into coming back, before she finally relents. He doesn't care about what SHE wants, it's always about him. Whether it be secretly meeting up, or in The Last Hope, he tries to pressure her to date him again (which she FINALLY refuses and scolds him for thinking about his own needs when they're right before a final battle. as she should). It's especially upsetting in the newest book that tigerheart seems to be the only think at the center of her character. when she argues with ivypool, it's less about the two sister's interpersonal conflicts and more about her and tigerheart's relationship. which...feels like a lot of missed potential to me? i want them to argue, i want dovewing to stand up to herself against ivypool, but why does the entire conflict have to revolve around him? why can't dovewing have her own thoughts and feelings without it tying back to her awful husband?
