I know I won’t shut up about this but,

Please for the love of frick stop downplaying what Izzy’s done to Ed. Stop acting like Ed’s some unhinged abusive monster for the toe thing while trivializing Izzy’s bad choices in the same breath. Everyday I get less and less tolerant of people acting like Ed overreacted and Izzy did absolutely nothing to justify what happened to him in episode 10.

Let me just spell something out for a second. Ed had to stand there, with seconds to spare, desperately thinking of a way to save someone he loves before he dies in front of him. You want to look at me and say doing that to a person doesn’t matter? That the cosmically horrifying thought of “they’re gonna die, they’re gonna die, IF I DON’T DO SOMETHING THEY’LL BE A CORPSE-” screaming in your head isn’t an act of violence? I am literally begging some of you to understand that this isn’t some outlandish scenario no one can ever relate to or understand. There are people who know this fear. It can be a lot when there’s tons of people insinuating it isn’t as big of a deal as it actually is.

Izzy directly put them in this situation, and it’s not the first time he’s tried to kill Stede. It’s not just that either, he’s standing there wasting those precious seconds yapping bullshit trying to justify why Ed should just let himself be hurt in this way. Later on he’s completely unsympathetic of Ed’s grief, and belittles him for the selfish desire of wanting Ed to stay the person he knew. Even if this comes from a place of emotional immaturity, it’s still incredibly cruel.

Besides “Ed’s becoming a different person so Izzy has the right to be upset” does not track. It doesn’t matter if Ed wasn’t always like this, he grew and changed. That is a thing you can do. Izzy can be upset but Ed was not responsible or deserving of punishment for those feelings.

I think the reason people see these things as lesser than the choking or toe incident is because of the subconscious tendency we have to deemphasize emotional abuse. The pain Ed caused Izzy was not worse or “disproportionate” to what Izzy caused Ed just because it was physical. These are traumatic experiences and terrible ways to treat people, and I’m tired of fans trivializing them because Ed’s retaliation was flashier.

one thing I definitely don't want out of the rest of S2 episodes, and afraid that will come to happen nonetheless due to the "love triangle" interview, or due to stereotypic expectations of "softer love saving from past abuse and toxicity", and also, like, LOTS OF SPOILERY STILLS for the episodes premiering tomorrow... is for Izzy Hands to come out of his fucked up dependent toxic love for Ed into another romantic relationship, especially if it includes Edward.

I want Izzy Hands to be developed as a character, to finally untangle his love towards Ed/Blackbeard, not through falling in love again... but through the love towards the crew, and of them towards him. I want for the trauma pack of attempted Ed Teach murderers to bond, not so hard it's impossible to untangle them from one another, but enough to see "yeah, all these people are together, and they're gonna stay shoulder to shoulder to protect one another".

I want a friend group that did bond through a traumatic experience, but came out trusting one another because of care, not trauma. I want that to be the crux of Israel Hands' development, to be someone who can finally see himself apart from Edward Teach, and apart from "this love he has", like a disease... I want him to embrace what he has yet refused to admit. that he wants to care for his people, his crew, and to be cared for back equally, without any dynamics of power in the way.

I kinda hate how Cirie's demise has exposed how comp dependent BB has become. Like yeah we been knew, but it’s like… you don't need to do all this song and dance on Survivor. But because a single person has the power to control the fate of everyone in the house week to week, it requires players to cover themselves on all sides, resulting in the post-16 meta of a huge onion alliance to maximize one's chances of not hitting the block any given week. There's no need for that in Survivor; the only person an immunity winner can impact is themselves, so the rest of the tribe isn't forced to play around the whims of a single person. And with the comps themselves becoming increasingly physical over the years, somehow this glorified summer camp is more dependent on physical fitness than the game that starves people on an island for a month and a half.

bro ed doesnt even yell at izzy until e10. whenever he talks to izzy he's level-headed and calm up until izzy hits him where the wound is still fresh with his "pining after his boyfriend" bullshit. and the first time we see ed use physical violence on izzy is in e9 when he punches him, which is like, a completely warranted response to izzy trying to get ed's boyfriend killed.

so where the fuck are all these takes coming from that ed is some kind of abusive and controlling boss?? ed is relaxed and casual in most of their scenes together, but izzy's the one either putting on a show of strict military-like professionalism or just screaming his head off trying to tell ed what to do.

like yeah, as the captain, ed is the one in charge, but we never see him use his structural power as izzy's boss to control izzy's behavior (save for making izzy invite stede aboard, aka an easy basic errand). but izzy's the one using whatever emotional power he has over ed to try and control every aspect of who ed is.

Thinking once again about how Izzy’s character is set up in a way that almost makes him seem like a Scar Lion King kind of guy (stereotypical power-hungry second in command who wants to steal their boss’s position of power) but then it turns out no actually he does want to serve under his boss. More than anything. Because he’s a fucked up little freak with a gay little crush who worships his boss like a god and wants to get stepped on by him. Like that is literally Thee character twist ever, imagine not finding that narratively delicious.

i started making a complete list of “things other people agree izzy is good at” and “things only izzy says he’s good at” for brain distractions and on that first list is swordfighting

the second list is …everything else, i truly do find this little fucker so fun on a narrative level. he’s the textbook unreliable narrator: literally everything he says ends up directly contradicted by the people in question or the action, but he swaggers around yelling his version of events loudest! (and weirdest, lmfao.)

and honestly on a deeper level it makes us as an audience look at how we process things people tell us vs things people show us, and how those are often very much at odds.

the writing on this show is ridiculously good, you know?
