I love driving on these "semi-rural" roads out here because all the new developments have street names that are like what the moms who will soon live in the McMansions being built there will name their kids. Here's a short sampling:
Oaklyn
Corsham
Overby
Crowder
Terrene
Charlbert
Floresta
Foresten
Anfield
Maxton
Blaney
Branston
Blaydon
Alslee
Graedon
Tobermory
Koreman
Newlyn
Fenella
Danton
Crilly

I need to talk about something.
I know the "please reblog" posts have been making the rounds again, but the message just isn’t being heard.
Before I get into that though, I need to make one thing as clear as possible:
I am grateful for every single note I get, no matter what kind it is.
But this is frustrating.
Tumblr media
Last time I made this kind of post, I’d made a hand drawn graph but this time I made an effort to keep this one as clear and concise as possible. I included replies because it’s still an interaction beyond just tapping and moving on. My own reblogs and replies have been subtracted for the most accurate data.
Only one of these has a good reblogs to likes ratio, and it’s the least popular of the stories shown. And honestly, seeing the disparity with all the others hurts. I spend hours and hours of my time writing. Even when I’m not actively typing anything out, I’m thinking about characters and plot points almost constantly. And seeing it mapped out like this makes me feel like all that time and effort is wasted and unappreciated.
Think of it this way: You’re working a job, and your boss keeps telling you how good you are at it, so you work harder, hoping to get a raise. But no matter how good you are at your job, the only thing you get out of it is ‘nice work’. After a while, the words feel empty and you stop putting that effort in, since there’s no tangible reward for it. Then your boss wonders why you aren’t working as hard and gives you grief for it, sometimes even demanding that you work hard for nothing.
You tell them, over and over, that you need that raise. There is no reason for you to not get it. They have the money, but they just won’t give it to you. The effort of changing one number on your paycheck is just ‘too hard’.
You wouldn’t stay at that job for very long, would you? Of course not, you want to be somewhere where you feel genuinely appreciated and are shown that by your boss.
That is exactly what the situation is like for creators here. Except we don’t get paid for posting to begin with!
There is no algorithm on this site. Liking a post won’t make it appear on your followers feeds like it does on Twitter. Unlike YouTube, the number of views a post gets does absolutely nothing for us, that isn’t even tracked here. Liking a post will not automatically show you similar posts like it does on TikTok. If you want more, you need to reblog.
I’ve seen a few people talk about empty reblogs (those without tags or comments). Personally, I don’t mind those! The very act of reblogging is what matters, because even if it is empty, it’ll still show up on your followers feeds and more people will see it.
I’ve also seen posts from ‘likers’ that say we aren’t entitled to interaction, and we are very much aware of that, but that also means you are not entitled to our work. Work that we are doing for free.
If you don’t let creators know in some form (reblogs, replies, messages, even a simple tag of ‘nice’) that you really want to see our work, you have no right at all to complain when we stop posting or even delete everything altogether.
It’s really sad that, right around posting my twentieth story, I’m thinking about stopping. This has been bothering me for a very long time. Graphing the numbers up and seeing what I’ve been feeling proven, through cold, hard, facts, has done nothing to change my mind.

cant tell you how bad it feels to constantly tell other artists to come to tumblr, because its the last good website that isn't fucked up by spoonfeeding algorithms and AI bullshit and isn't based around meaningless likes
just to watch that all fall apart in the last year or so and especially the last two weeks
there's nowhere good to go anymore for artists.
edit - a lot of people are saying the tags are important so actually, you'll look at my tags.
#please dont delete your accounts because of the AI crap. your art deserves more than being lost like that #if you have a good PC please glaze or nightshade it. if you dont or it doesnt work with your style (like mine) please start watermarking #use a plain-ish font. make it your username. if people can't google what your watermark says and find ur account its not a good watermark #it needs to be central in the image - NOT on the canvas edges - and put it in multiple places if you are compelled #please dont stop posting your art because of this shit. we just have to hope regulations will come slamming down on these shitheads#in the next year or two and you want to have accounts to come back to. the world Needs real art #if we all leave that just makes more room for these scam artists to fill in with their soulless recycled garbage #improvise adapt overcome. it sucks but it is what it is for the moment. safeguard yourself as best you can without making #years of art from thousands of artists lost media. the digital world and art is too temporary to hastily click a Delete button out of spite

"A story doesn't need a theme in order to be good" I'm only saying this once but a theme isn't some secret coded message an author weaves into a piece so that your English teacher can talk about Death or Family. A theme is a summary of an idea in the work. If the story is "Susan went grocery shopping and saw a weird bird" then it might have themes like 'birds don't belong in grocery stores' or 'nature is interesting and worth paying attention to' or 'small things can be worth hearing about.' Those could be the themes of the work. It doesn't matter if the author intended them or not, because reading is collaborative and the text gets its meaning from the reader (this is what "death of the author" means).
Every work has themes in it, and not just the ones your teachers made you read in high school. Stories that are bad or clearly not intended to have deep messages still have themes. It is inherent in being a story. All stories have themes, even if those themes are shallow, because stories are sentences connected together for the purpose of expressing ideas, and ideas are all that themes are.

Obsessed with characters who portray themselves as worse than they are. Who are lying to everyone including themselves about it. People generally assume if someone's lying about themselves they're trying to look better but sometimes they're trying to look worse. They attribute agency to where they had none, add intend to accidents, try to convince everyone that this is something they did instead of something that happened to them.

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.
you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.
you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.
don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.
if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.
you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:
how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!
aren't you happy yet?
