MY HATER POST

literally made a hater post just to talk about stuff in the sonic series that I dont like ❤️ if you don't like this post then fuck you block and/or blow me. this is disorganized as fuck btw and i dont care

sonic frontiers was the best mainline sonic game in over a decade but thats really not saying much

i think tangle is kinda boring and whispangle is kinda boring by proxy. whispers cool tho

surge is the best rival sonic character since blaze and the only thing dragging her down is that sonic in the idw comics kinda sucks as a character

its great that we are getting more female characters in idw and the games but quite a lot of them are kinda boring and we still need more female villains

metal sonic is basically nothing but a jobber in idw rn and its really depressing

idw please treat the babylon rogues better, theyre goofy characters with serious storylines just like basically every other sonic character, stop making them NOTHING but a joke

lanolin is an interesting character, yall just cant handle women who are even SLIGHTLY rude to a fan favorite character

the worst part of idw is that its tied to game canon because they cant shake up the status quo too much or have character arcs for most of the main characters

rouge is ABSOLUTELY a sexualized character and always has been. learn to like a character despite the faults in how they are portrayed or shut up about it

sally was the best canon romantic partner for sonic and you cant change my mind

the second worst part of idw is the titular character himself

i dislike surg/amy because of the age difference andalso the fact that everyone wants to disregard surges character to have her be redeemed

if sega is going to keep teasing son/amy then they should just stop dancing around it and make them canon already, make the shippers happy and get the drawn out agony over with for the rest of us. also age amy up for the love of allthat is holy

also, sega should stop ship teasing ships they have no intention of making canon in general, its shitty and edges into queerbaiting when done with gay ships

the above does not apply to whispangle

idw art is overall much much MUCH better than any other sonic comic and its not even a contest

there are a lot of things i disagree with about the current state and direction of this franchise but we are in a much better place than we were even just two years ago and we should be glad for all this success

the worst parts of archie are the most atrocious things that this franchise has ever put out, in art, storytelling, basic morality, etc.

most of the popular ships in this fandom suck ass

unless sega stops rushing sonic team and actually gives some resources to them we are never going to get better than 7/10 games. corporations are not your friends and you dont have to thank them for giving you a mid product

sega should have been sued into oblivion for the literal seizure inducing state sonic colors ultimate was released in and we should never, ever let them forget it

remain skeptical about every single sonic game until release, we've had "WERE SO BACK" moments before that turned out to befalse

the edm in sonic frontiers cyberspace slaps but isnt as memorable as previous sonic soundtracks

stop ghosting sonics friends (sonic frontiers, sonic prime, sonic dream team) its kinda weird and puts way too much importance on sonic again. this is a good cast, USE THEM

sonic frontiers dlc being hard wasnt a bad thing, the jank, glitches, and lack of fairness were bad things that tarnished the experience

the games have never ever been properly translated from japanese into english and that is just an objective fact. but also dont shit on people for only having interest in the english version, you have to go WAY out of your way to get a good translation and that's on the franchise, not the fans

this franchise's "canon" has been fucked since the original classic games, trying to fix it in the sense that you can somehow make every little detail perfect is a lost cause. just pick and choose what you like

of all the characters that deserve a game to themselves blaze deserves it the most. girlie has a whole other dimension that we could explore can you IMAGINE an open world game in the sol dimension COME ON

if lots of people are criticizing something you like then you should give some consideration to the fact that they may have some points instead of just disregarding it as people being nitpicky and nasty. you dont have to listen to it but if you dont do that then you cant dismiss it out of hand either

the stories of sa1 and sa2 arent even the best stories in this franchise

06 sucks ass and no amount of "potential" means jackshit when it comes to actual quality. if we're just evaluating "potential" then congratulations everything ever made is a quality product have fun with that

its okay to games with goofier and lighthearted stories

let this franchise have its edge back. but also let sonic be cute. they arent mutually exclusive

keep good physics and momentum in the games for the love of god please its what this franchise was built on

sega of japan may do characterization better but the closest brushes to death that this franchise has ever had (Dreamcast, 06, Forces) were all on them as well

this might be the hottest take of all time but sonic team shares some of the blame in how a lot of sonic games turn out very bad, its not all on sega

stating that some sonic-inspired games (spark the electric jester and freedom planet) or sonic fan games (project 06) have turned out better than actual sonic games is kind of objectively correct but youre a dick if you say it just to make sonic fans feel bad about the games or themselves

if you ONLY consume sonic media you need to branch out more. for your own health please

flynn is neither the worst person to ever walk the surface of this planet or gods gift to the sonic fandom, practice some moderation in your opinions people

sonic frontiers open world biomes are boring and nowhere close to most open world games, even ones from a decade ago

rouges heroes and prime outfits sucked ngl like just from a color and design standpoint like theyre kinda ass and overcomplicated and an eyesore

if sega is gonna age the characters up they should actually go ahead and post the new ages on some official channel, dont just leave us in this horrible limbo where we have to argue with weirdos online about who youre morally okay to thirst over certain characters and whether a different voice counts as a character becoming an adult

the fact that the main official english sonic account only posts memes and advertises hilariously overpriced """"""""products"""""""" kinda sucks tbh. i have to go to other language accounts to get stuff like concept art and celebrating the anniversary of a game the released a year ago. were well past the era of laughing at sonic just for being sonic, now lets act like it

ryan drummond was the best english va, but jason got the better scripts. roger is getting better and most of the work hes been given is just. bad. so i dont feel okay judging his work. but he is my least favorite

gameplay>story when it comes to the actual games, every time. if you have a good story to tell its only hampered by being in a shitty game

worst game in the series is sonic colors ultimate. say what you will about 06, forces, rise of lyric, or whatever other game. at least they werent literally physically dangerous to play

all the main female characters in the games are asskickers, they just need to be utilized more. as does every member of the supporting cast

the sonic franchise fucking needs to stop having long gone ancient civilizations. please have new ideas

Did Silver kill Flint?

I keep seeing cold ass takes in the Black Sails side of tumblr that make my blood boil.

Look, I got into Black Sails in 2017, three weeks after the finale aired. Back then, there seemed to be an understanding that the "Silver killed Flint" interpretation was just a fringe theory from straight people made uncomfortable by the queer lead getting a happy ending. Personally, it was my first encounter with the phrase "unbury your gays" (having learnt "bury your gays" a year earlier with The 100). It seemed to be generally accepted that Flint lived, and that this was the whole point.

Now, it would appear that a shift has happened in the fandom, where the idea of Silver killing Flint is no longer treated as a theory by straight weirdos but as a canon, onscreen event, and these posts come from queer fans. It seems to come from younger fans who were about 12 or 13 in 2017. It's so mindboggling to me.

The arguments for this Silver-Killed-Flint thing is usually the same two: birds flying away and Silver's men turning around in the forest, as in reaction to a noise, which is interpreted as a gunshot.

Like, I'm just elaborating on a rant I sent to my friends earlier today here but, if Silver killed Flint, then :

Why would we be shown an entire sequence with one of Silver's henchmen looking for Thomas where he is?

If Thomas and Flint are dead, why aren't we shown their deaths? It's an actual rule in cinema that a character whose death isn't shown on screen isn't dead, a rule that the show does follow (we see Billy's funeral but not his corpse). Besides, Black Sails doesn't shy away from showing death on screen, even for main characters. Then, why not show how Thomas died instead of telling us? Why not show us Silver shooting Flint? The writers trust their viewers to understand the pattern, and understand that the reason we do not see their deaths is because they aren't dead.

Why would Silver bring up Thomas to Flint if he'd planned on killing him? Or if, as I've also seen it said, it was just a lie he made on the spot for Madi ?

And talking about Madi, I've seen A LOT of people saying she would never forgive Silver. And to that I genuinely have to ask, have you seen their last appearence in the show? I dont mean their argument in the cabin, I mean the scene where Silver sits on top of a hill and turns around to find Madi waiting for him on the path. I mean the scene where he walks towards her and she waits for him. So, my question here, if she wasn't gonna forgive Silver, why is she waiting for him on that hill? Nevermind the fact that Treasure Island's Long John Silver is in a relationship with a Black woman (I've seen posts saying that could be Max, and really wtf??), what is the point of showing us this scene if she's not gonna forgive him? Why not stop their arc at the cabin where she sends him away?

At the time when Black Sails' finale aired, Supernatural was still queerbaiting its audience, and Sherlock ended in a fucking shitshow. People were throwing fits over Bill Potts, Doctor Who's first ever onscreen lesbian companion because she was a lesbian with a masculine name. A year before that, The 100, a very popular tv show at the time, had just killed it's only lesbian character and faced so much uproar and backlash for it. (That was my entry into the LGBT+ community, by the way : the first character to make me think I might actually like women getting killed on screen two scenes after having had sex with the female lead). Sense8's two-hour long finale and Love, Simon wouldn't air for another year.

So yeah, if you weren't into queer media back in 2017 (and omg I sound like such an old twat), I don't think you can understand just how important that ending, with Flint being reunited with the love of his life after so much pain and loss, was.

If your interpretation of Black Sails is that the events of Treasure Island happened the way the book tells you, then I'm sorry to tell you this but you completely missed the point of the show.

@certainunknownlove making my own post for this, because this is not only a response to your question about good omens fandom and its casual aphobia, but I want to try once more to get my thoughts down.

To simply put - when you see aphobia in a fandom setting, what do you expect to see? Most allo people think of the classics, "asexual and aromantic are not real!" or "you're being homophobic!"

But the problem is these are all too cut and dry (not to say aphobes like this still pop up every now and then). Social media is now far more aware of aphobia, and are all proudly saying how they love and respect aromantics and asexuals, they're apart of the lgbtq community, hoorah!

This leads to a situation like the good omens fandom: two mostly male-presenting beings are not human, and their relationship in the book and in s1 is in a weird murky ground of queerplatonic. Humans point out how romantic they look, the author repeatedly states how their relationship isn't in human terms yet doesn't shoot down anyone's interpretations and tries to do little innuendos like an ox-rib eating scene. And by the time s2 comes around, they showcase their relationship in a more traditionally human sense, ala a kiss.

Talking about whether making them asexual or aromantic is aphobic itself is a whole other topic that would be far longer to do, but the fact of the matter is some people see them as asexual, some people see them as queerplatonic, some people see them as completely alloallo.

For aspec people, the kind of comments you would usually find, off the top of my head, would be things like:

"They have to kiss again in s3"

"Wouldn't it be sooo poetic if they were made for each other, soulmates, and if other angels and demons were too?"

"Wouldn't it be great though if these non-human beings were soooo connected to humanity that they did these universally human things?

Innocuous, but then it builds up:

"It was queerbaiting"

"They finally confirmed they're romantic in s2 with the kiss"

And making assumptions based on their own allo perspectives:

"If they aren't sexual, what's with all the things like the ox-rib?"

"I understand people read them as asexual, but here is a 5k word meta confirming they're sexual"

"Ace people can still have sex!"

Which can then lead to certain people claiming things like:

"I'm going to quote tweet this person expressing their fear of them making ineffable husbands sexual by saying I hope they do"

"The author said they weren't sexual, but we saw them kiss"

"The author is too cowardly to commit to them being gay because of this"

"What are they gonna do, make them Ken dolls in their relationship?" (This is paraphrasing an actual post)

... what allo people dont get is they can make alllll sorts of excuses for these kinds of phrases: its my interpretation! I'm not really serious! Ace and aro people are valid!! But when those posts get hundreds of notes, and these posts are made by the Big Fandom People, other people climb on the bandwagon and it leads to those last few examples I gave. It's a fucking echo chamber, at that point.

When aspec people talk about these things, they only get ten to twenty notes at best. And you might still get people in their notes saying things like "it's not everyone in fandom, stop taking it so seriously!"

I don't know, man. I tried to talk casually, i tried to give detailed examples on why it's aphobic, I tried calling out the Big Aphobes and still politely censoring their usernames, I tried making a discord for aspec people but its always dead silent in there. All I know is, it's thankfully not just me.

Stop Trying to make Buddie a thing! It's not gonna happen! The show said so many times its not gonna happen, stop referring to people who dont ship buddie as mentally ill, its rude and not true, not everyone has to ship the way you ship, stop telling people 2 men just cant be friends, men can have male friends and not be gay. stop harassing the writers, creators and actors of 911 into giving you Buddie, its not going to happen. I normally don’t respond to these kinds of asks, but you know what I feel this needs to be addressed.

Your first point, I never called anyone mentally ill for not shipping Buddie. I’m not sure where you got that information. Everyone is more than welcome to ship what they ship.

Secondly, Tim Minear is not a reliable resource on what will or won’t eventually happen on the show. Before Buck’s bisexual awakening in 7x04 he adamantly stated that Buck and Eddie weren’t queer. He’s a politician. He knows how to say the right things to keep the most people happy without giving them too high an expectation. Aside from that “the show” used to be run by Fox who strongly limited what people could or couldn’t say.

Also, to that end for the longest time this show did feel like it was queerbaiting because of the intentionality behind every moment Buck and Eddie shared. Now I can gladly say I was wrong and it was just a long game set up for Buck’s coming out.

Third, there is not nearly enough representation in the world if I’m still getting angry asks like this all the time. Until people can be kind to one another and stop asking “why does it always have to be gay?” Then we will never have enough representation.

Finally, I don’t care what my rating is on Apple Podcast. I do my podcast to have an outlet with my friends to talk about a show we love.

Buck will forever be canonically bisexual. Stay mad.

not to be anything like a demon phannie(i never was thank god) and talk extensively about dan and phil's personal life but it makes me feel too much to think about how even though dan seemed comfortable in his sexuality before he was out (always talking about gay celebrities that were attractive and queer movies and media and making vaguely gay jokes) he was struggling very hard with being gay and thats one thing to deal with but an extremely large group of teenagers constantly speculated about his relationship and tried to "prove it" and hell he even explicitly said in his coming out video that his relationship with phil "wasnt just romantic" and that theyre soulmates, and yet people still speculate and talk about their relationship and try to get more information

it sounds deeply traumatizing to have your sexuality speculated about by a big chunk of the internet for an insanely long time, and of course it would make you want to be private so that your relationship however it developed or changed wouldnt be scrutinized, and sometimes ive speculated myself about the nature of their relationship but the extremes people go and how they make every thing they post about their relationship is hard to watch,like dont get me wrong i love seeing how open the guys are now but im still terrified it wont last long because of how awful the internet is

and yeah i know, im speculating way too much about the feelings and motivations of real life people which is something other people did at an alarming and damaging rate,but i've been watching their content for more than a decade and this new wave of content has really meant the world to me and it saddens me that we lost it for so long, and i know that era of the internet was a different time but fans are STILL like this, hell its worse because real human people get accused of queerbaiting, can you imagine if that happened to dan or phil? i dont know if dan would have ever came back or came out

the "phandom" is one of the biggest examples ive seen of fans being more focused on a possible relationship of content creators to a very scary and invasive degree, rather than their content themselves and dont get me wrong i shipped them too, but theres a certain threshold that you just shouldnt cross when it comes to real human people, they arent characters, theyre People

i think we need to just make peace with the fact that we know some very important things: they have a house together, theyre still best friends, theyre soulmates and they seem happy and thats all we Need to know and if they never share any more thats okay

i dont want the "phandom" to jeopardize that again, i want them to make content as long as theyre happy, not risk pushing them away

I deff feel like this message will come across as kind of negative and i'm sorry in advance for that but I wanted to ask a wenclair shipper myself because...I'm not sure why so many people think this ship will be canon or even semi canon. For one, the showrunners have been obsessively talking about all the things they love doing with wednesdays character and they surely would have mentioned if they explore her in a romantic relationship by now (actually they specifically said the relationship of the season is mother/daughter) Not to mention netflix's god awful track record with LGBT ships. Again, sorry for the negative message but why do you guys think this ship will happen? Or is that you don't think it's canon and just like the idea of the dynamic? Because there's a similar one with morticia/debbie that isn't canon but I've seen people like them and even ship them in the past

Hey, not negative at all! I personally dont have much faith in Netflix but I love the dynamic that they have! I've been in many fandoms for a long time and honestly, I'm always so use to never getting canon ships. I was a Faberry shipper back in my Glee days and THAT was delusion. I expect the queerbait, the empty promises, the actors shipping them but it never playing out. I don't know how to describe it exactly. Like I make all these posts about them but I genuinely don't see ANY romantic relationships with Wednesday developing in season 1. I just like to attach to dynamics like theirs. Even if I know it'll never happen. It might be sad, but I've been doing it since I was 12! I grew up with ZERO wlw in anything. Now, I feel spoiled having She-Ra and Owl House, they heal the inner gay kid in me. But, I am still the pessimistic 25 year old and I know not to get any hopes up to see wlw representation.

And I can't speak for everyone. I don't know how many people truly believe it is going to be canon. Like I said, I don't think it will be, unfortunately. But, I've been around and I have lived off of fics, art, and other people making head canons, of ships that never, ever, sailed. I'll still carry on and ignore canon as I always have! It's not exactly about it being canon, sure that makes it sooo much better, but it's about their dynamic and the what ifs. Debbie and Morticia is a great example! The vibe is there. The looks, comments, Debbie being a killer is very appealing for Morticia. People ship it cause it's fun sometimes to imagine the what ifs. Canon doesn't stop us. That's why we have fics with AUs. We WANT to see this dynamic and since we won't ever see it, we will create our own out of it.

Now, if Wenclair does happen for some reason, then it's a win and it'll be a rare time I won't be disappointed.

hey bestie

if byler didnt happen i would genuinely believe that their intention was to go through with it but they dropped it or were told to drop it. because if its queerbait theyre literally doing it all wrong? the ultimate goal of baiting is to gain an audience from a selected community, in this case the queer community, by promoting the media as potential representation and yet they have done everything in their power to AVOID this with byler.

for starters the majority of queerbait is usually achieved in the marketing side of things. and yet there was ZERO joint press with noah and finn, where they could have promoted byler the most. almost all of their scenes are together but they deliberately separated them so there wasnt even a chance for spoilers about byler. that is not how you queerbait.

queerbaiting is supposed to be obvious. it shouldnt require elaborate theories, it should be thrown in our faces. this article shows a clip of a trailer from riverdale that includes a gay kiss. i think the kiss was just to distract the character, it wasnt intended to be romantic at all and yet they put it in the trailer? that was obviously for the goal of getting queer audiences more excited and more likely to watch this (absolutely fucking horrendous) show.

on the flip side!! theres also straight bait and again, aaaaalll in the marketing.

i cant even believe these are real lmao.

they did this for s3 too. theres a flash of this in the s3 trailer, which had lots of mlvn shippers thinking this was the season of nothing but love for them and yet el broke up with him in the second episode. we also get audio of mike saying “we’re not kids anymore” but no visuals that showed he was talking to will and definitely not the “its not my fault you dont like girls” line, which would have been such a clear opportunity to queerbait.

and s4 was very gay and they could have so easily grabbed a LOT of peoples attention and curiosity by adding some byler scenes in the trailer but there was nothing.

could you imagine if they showed one of these in the trailer?? they had such a clear opportunity to queerbait and they didnt.

the only thing they did include was this and i didnt even notice will the first time i watched it.

the only things we’ve seen in the marketing that relate to byler are from netflix accounts in other countries that loosely imply that they ship byler but thats literally it. and these accounts dont actually have any access to the writers room. theyre not implying or confirming anything theyre just trying to be relatable and a lot of people would relate to the post if they mention byler.

aside from them just avoiding the topic in the promotion for the show, theres also the fact that byler has inspired loads of in depth theories and analyses based on how they portray them in the show. the point of queerbaiting is to throw it in your face. “look a gay kiss! watch our show to see gay people!” the fact that we’re reading into shit like lighting, colors, music, framing, all this stuff that the ga doesnt read into is a big sign that their goal isnt queerbait. one time i got an anon that summed it up perfectly, “why would they queerbait only to gay film nerds?” and its so true.

queerbaiting should not have people thinking too hard. like the kiss in riverdale, its supposed to be shoved in our faces in order to actually achieve what theyre trying to do. not everybody has time or cares enough to read entire analyses on specific film choices, and because of that, they would be completely failing to bait people. the goal is to gain their audience and no one has been baited for this because it doesnt seem obvious that its actually going to happen.

because of all this if byler didnt happen i dont think queerbait would be the right word. itd be a whole different thing entirely and i would genuinely believe they were forced to not go through with it if it didnt happen. but i highly highly doubt that would ever happen. its netflix’s biggest show and they trust the duffers and its the last season so even if people dont like it its not like theyd lose money because people would stop watching. by then theyd already finished the whole show.

like i dont wanna be that guy who says “seamoon isn’t canon stop insisting it is” along with like a million reasons why it’s bad and manipulative and unhealthy because it isn’t. people who say that are usually being weirdos in order to “pwn teh lezbos” (ie they’re lesbophobes), which means they either ship firemoon/seafire and wanna be edgy about the fact their ship upsets people, or they’re one of those people who drools over gay men all day and thinks seamoon is an obstacle somehow to their fetishistic enjoyment of mlm (like firewind’s been relevant since kingdom launched).

no, this is not that post. im not here to write on the piss poor treatment of lesbians and sapphics in the cr fandom, I’m here to present the simple fact that devsis does not care about gay people and they especially do not care about gay women. none of the gay ships that are coded within the game will ever be confirmed but this goes DOUBLE for ships that involve two women in them because like i said before, have seamoon ever had any canon interaction with each other? Is sea fairy on moonlight’s relationship chart? Has seamoon ever been included in ANY kind of romantic/valentine’s day event, and included in a way where both characters are explicitly on screen? (And no, one cup with them doesn’t count—look at how much merch mintcocoa has)

like. look. i get that people want to say espresseleine and wildchip are gay-baiting because devsis is somehow pandering to fujoshis just by making them...exist somehow (which is another thing to dissect in itself—if you think gay men just existing and having fun together is fetishitic, you’ve got things to unpack). which kind of brings home my point that people are so caught up in nitpicking front and center super popular mlm ships that most of them have forgotten there’s a ship predating both by nearly four years and yet still has not seen any canon content beyond vague subtext, and has not seen any content in general since 2019 when the I WANT YOU EVERYDAY mv was released (you all know that one image).

like. holy shit, I need other people to talk about this. the cr fandom is infatuated with men and mlm (which isn’t even completely because of fujos—gay men don’t pretend you’re immune to lesbophobia just because your fav is a lesbian) but the fact it penetrates right down to the source material is appalling. it honestly goes to show how subtly misogynistic the stories of cr can be in general—interactions between two women is rare, almost unheard of in most stories/events, but men have an abundance of them. think of how often rambutan and mala spoke to each other in the season 7 event compared to the number of men clotted cream talked to throughout the entirety of odyssey. the number of canon opportunities for men to be romantic/coded with each other is INFINITELY more than the opportunities women have with each other. like seriously, if you don’t believe me, ask yourself how many women financier talked to that were her own age in cookie odyssey, or how long it’s been since rye and chili have had their story elaborated on. it’s kind of appalling, and devsis is really illicit with it. while I don’t think that fandom behavior is generally a good indicator of how something is treated in canon (devsis does write gnc/fem men well despite how badly the fandom misbehaves with them) but there is a correlation here. there is a pattern. I hope you get my point thus forward and now understand that the lack of wlw content in the fandom is a direct result of misogyny and lesbophobia, something thy goes deeper than hand waving it off by saying “oh the fujoshis are at it again”. guess what! the entire fandom isn’t made up of fujoshis!

idk. hopefully all of that tracked well enough that my through line is clear here. i also hope don’t need to lecture/tell you about the bechdel test and its original purpose (google is free otherwise), and I assume that (hopefully) you are smart enough to go looking for more resources on how lesbianism is by the virtue of misogyny often written out of the possibility of most narratives.

thus, hopefully my conclusion on why this is happening with seamoon makes sense, and hopefully you (especially if you are not sapphic) can understand this better and demand more out of devsis to actually make them talk to each other and actually produce more canon content of the ship. the modus of operandi should not be on us (especially those of us who are sapphic) to keep asking and begging and being okay with scraps.

16. dr. al is the unfortunate social media manager for meteorite and after he turns sides he spam-posts shock content to ruin their reputation. wolfnose and bunnyears are those weird "problematic" bloggers who post guro and shit. morgan has one of those devils advocate centrist blogs except that they dont care about what theyre talking about they just think stirring the pot is a fun pasttime but they also have a pretentious dark academia sideblog and become a niche famous blogger. kitty is your average 13 year old on social media and pretends she doesnt know morgan. parrothead runs a blog primarily focused on activism but eventually gets in trouble online for knowing people like wolfnose and bunnyears and eventually because theyre the leader of the ravens flock. ravenman makes a tumblr after returning to the ravens flock and just posts random thoughts and deactivates when he reaches like 100 followers. bottlecap is a popular girlblogger who tries to pretend she doesnt know any of these freaks but gets her account hacked after king has morgan kidnap her. also morgan gets called out for the kidnapping by the official social media for those of the sun and responds with a photo of solastrus' flaming corpse with bottlecap in the background so everyone knows she forgave them for the kidnapping.

I agree with you on everything and I love your clearsightedness, except one thing. I think youre right that LTHQ/Sony don't want Larries around as unconditional fans because we support Louis too hard, so we have to be taught in regular bursts not to trust him and hate him instead. I think HSHQ/Sony do want Larries around because we also support Harry hard and we're very handy to defend his queerness when he's playing all sides against the middle and getting shit for supposed queerbaiting from normals and other fanbases. We're gonna to be super useful for getting SM hype when MP drops and defending H from claims he shouldn't have taken the role because hes not gay. But Louis, they do need Louis to keep Larry going just enough (he is kind of necessary for that) and lets be real, make Harry's image more approachable and relatable for us, but they dont want him to come anywhere near reaching his potential as an artist as we've seen proved conclusively by now. This is just more of the same old bullshit they always pull to drag him back down and damage him again because the tour went far too well. Its the same shit. The same people. The same tactics. Damaging syndicated articles, and fandom sabotage 'from his own mouth' except it's always a version of Louis that doesnt exist when you actually see or hear him. It's about us , about Larries, and how easily we can be made to turn on him but only if we never turn on Harry. I really think thats what its all about now.

I actually do think you have a point here, so I’ll add this to what I said - maybe HSHQ do want Larries around, but they want us fully in the background while they continue to cater to his solo fanbase and especially to the locals, who they want listening to his music, buying his album, and attending his concerts. Hardcore fans are important, but those locals are the reason his streaming and overall sales numbers are so high and it’s hard to sustain that interest.

You know, I’ve noticed more and more lately how this side of the fandom's view of Harry strays further and further from the general public view every single day. For example, I constantly see people talking about how het Harries and locals only like “sexy” Harry and how they must HATE the rest of Harry’s stage behavior and clothing. In reality, people have known how Harry acts and dresses for a long time and it adds to their attraction to him. I don’t get how people haven’t picked up on this considering Harry has become MORE popular with the general public and expanded his mostly female fanbase since Vogue. I try to avoid Harry and Louis content on TikTok, but often when it pops up, I find people talking about how Harry was “written by a woman” because he’s masculine while still being in touch with his feminine side and he’s sexy without being threatening. These aspects of Harry’s image that many Larries claim het Harries or the general public hate are actually a huge part of peoples’ perfect boyfriend fantasy of him, and both Harry and HSHQ know that.

It’s just extremely frustrating to watch people come up with excuses and alternative meanings to very clear, unsubtle lyrics (e.g. I bring the pop to the cinema, if you’re getting yourself wet for me, choke her with a sea view), make excuses for certain types of behavior or ignore it entirely (so much of Harry’s stunt content never even makes it to Tumblr, I’ve noticed, while all of Louis’ does), or blame everyone around Harry and then turn around and spew vitriol toward Louis immediately when something happens. Especially considering what the consequences of all of this stuff are for Harry (his career is on the rise) and what the consequences are for Louis (nothing has improved for him in terms of promo or public image even after his sold out world tour).

It’s just hard to watch how Louis gets punished by his fans when he gets nothing out of this shit. This quote you said toward the end: “It’s about us, about Larries, and how easily we can be made to turn on him but only if we never turn on Harry.” You’re right. And it’s horrible.

So I have concluded byler is indeed queerbait and I don't think I will watch season 5

They are obviously using will and mike "will they wont they" to lure us into watching their show I have been trying to be so positive about byler but ultimately my viewpoint is confirmed by the way season 4 showcases the feelings of "want" and "need" in a romantic relationship.

1/ "Want" is the desire for someone, it's the way we choose someone no matter what, it's a strong feeling that gets a lot of relationships go in the short or long term, and both parties wanting each other allows for feelings of trust and communication This is best shown through Joyce and Hopper's love story, they ultimately choose each other out of these feelings of wanting to be with the other. Joyce talks about choosing to go to russia, and she'd do it all over again. Hopper talks about choosing to get out of that cave, and letting more people enter his life.

It is kind of implied in Nancy and Steve's relationship too. They want each other but they don't necessarily need each other. They just want to make that choice.

We are meant to see this love as pure and good and adult.

2/ "Need" is that slightly-off feeling that you HAVE to be with that person, it's either a moral obligation or a feeling you push in order to fight your self-doubts. You NEED that person in your life to exist. It leads to codependency, it's deemed "childish" and even "wrong". This is best shown through Mike's feelings for El. El doesn't need Mike, she wants him. But Mike? Mike NEEDS El to function, and fears that El doesn't need him in return. And he's not even sure if he wants her.

I have a feeling season 5 will have Mike shifting his viewpoint from needing El to actually genuinely wanting her, and that would be his ultimate growth to fix his relationship with El.

Which leaves us with Will....

Will wants Mike. But he also needs him. And that part is childish, and boy does the show love to remind us how the one queer character's feelings are immature and childish and basically fucking up everything in his life and all hope of an actual good rep. Where is the growth for Will, if not that he must let go of Mike??? Let go of his gay feelings??

It breaks me but byler truly might not happen for this reason.

Like the only way it could happen is Mike realizing he doesn't actually want El, which i dont even know how they can pull that after everything that happened, AND to push that Mike WANTS will back, which again, no evidence in the past TWO SEASONS that could imply mike does like will that way, except for the stares that are "blink and you'll miss it" clues. Which is from a narrative point of view extremely weak, it wouldn't even make for a satisfying ship.

Mike can't even hug his friend and it just feels to me like he knows will is gay and it's giving him the itch, that it was all just homophobia in the end. I have a hard time seeing it as anything else.

They queerbaited us so hard. I have genuinely been hoping for byler to grow into something more, but nope. It fucks me up to no end that Will's heart-wrenching confession is written off as immature, thus Mike using it to confess to El also is immature, and the whole thing sucks. I don't want to see the outcome in season 5.

i need to mull it over but i think that ending was good! i wanna get my thoughts out before reading anyone else’s take on it, and i think that in itself is a good sign. it gave more to chew on than i expected it would.

i’ll avoid stating the obvious save to say that, for all it cleared the (very low) bar of not actively queerbaiting (like eg euphonium did), for a show that let two supporting charas be gay in canon, like, let our mains smooch cowards. (& when chisato calls takina “partner” it’s 相棒 which reads solidly “partner-in-crime” to me (and not in the otherside picnic way), so that doesn’t count.)

i enjoyed takina’s line: 諦めてたことから始めてみたらどうですか？ / “start with something you had given up on?”. if there’s a way to interpret that as meaning anything but “yourself” (”your own life”), i dont wanna know it.

i’m thinking about how mika had to be the one to, shall we say, extract the new heart for chisato. i don’t think there’s any systematic injustice angle there, it’s just about how the older generation must make sacrifices (his own pacifism, let alone his love) to create a better world for the newer (chisato alive). it fell to someone who could do that selflessly - unlike either main for whom it would be selfish - and i thought that was poignant.

but lets talk about majima.

majima, i think, has changed. earlier i said his danganronpa ass shit felt flat and now i wonder if that was on purpose to set up a contrast to now. it wasn’t when he let chisato have a break in the middle of a fight that surprised me - it was always clear he was interested in her as more than just an enemy combatant (and for different reasons as yoshimatsu’s more obviously evil one) - but i didn’t figure out why until his “bomb” turned out to be fireworks. that surprised me. he gives chisato this whole speech about how violent protest is the only way to oppose the state, and chisato counters with the other side of the catch-22 - her truth - that you can’t get ahead by hurting people. but this time, majima wasn’t there to destroy to begin with. he’s seen how DA just covers up his earlier naive protests with propaganda and he knows chisato is someone else the system has failed. having this conversation with chisato - presenting the catch-22 to her - recruiting her - was his goal.

admittedly there’s a few holes in this interpretation like he’s seen still danganronpa-ly egging on a random citizen at the end, and he himself isn’t characterized at all - we don’t know how his own backstory at all - i don’t like him at all! - but i don’t think you can explain his audible to fireworks as anything other than a second season hook. i don’t think you can interpret the “lycoris crisis” movie poster bit - literally propaganda - as a happy end. maybe we won’t get that season irl, but if we do, i really hope it delivers on what the fireworks seem to hint at and we get to see majima (well characterized) and chisato (goes on unambiguous dates with her unambiguous girlfriend in her free time) dismantle DA together.

yeah, thats my take i think.

like if you had asked me after I finished season four, I would have put money on s5 introducing a last-minute male love interest for Will who gets like less than a minute of screen time (similar to vicki this season).

i said there's no way the duffer brothers, who have made missteps as far as diversity representation goes, are going to write THE slowburn childhood friends-to-lovers straightbait love story of a generation.

but being on Tumblr, surrounded by Bylers, presented with the evidence, hardly exposed to the normie view . . . it makes you start to think things

lmao fandom is amazing, i love tumblr so much, but sometimes you start seeing things through a lens....... the thing is that it could be, the arguments and analysis say its entirely plausible, it would even explain some of the ickiest parts (for me) of the last seasons (like the whole dramatic mileven spiel based entirely on wills feelings and fueled entirely by wills belief in mike; mike being a huge no homo guy and byler growing apart for pretty much no reason and with pretty much no payoff)

But ARE they gonna do it? Are they really clever enough that this was all thought through? or is this just gonna be yet another example of fandom being way more clever than the writers

because for us to become byler truthers so swiftly when we really didnt believe at all in the first place, it doesnt just have to be a nice couple. it has to be something that would actually elevate the show and make it make sense. make it more cohesive than it already is. turn all these character moments into a huge OH SHIT slap in the face

But like. Can you imagine if they did this? Can you imagine how revolutionary it would be for a show the size stranger thing is, to actually scrap its longest lasting couple thats been a staple of the show for like 5 seasons and go SIKE, gay people win this round

People would lose their minds. It would be the most talked about show for a decade. People would tear their hair (both homophobes and gay people). And man, it would be air tight writing. So yeah not actually getting my hopes up and keeping my distance emotionally but like, narratively, it would just make all the sense in the world and i hope the duffers are half as clever as the fandom is, and that they know their own characters and story well enough to know what would create the most payoff
