@ifyouwereamelodymeg challenged me to actually write angst with these soft angst prompts and told me to pick the pair. Since I’ve just put Zutara through the ringer in clandestine meetings, how about some Dramione angst?

it's like we've become strangers

He's drinking gin. She didn't know he liked gin. When they- well, she always thought he preferred firewhiskey.

But there's no mistaking the wintery smell of pine wafting from his glass, nor the way it drifts over her when he stands too close to her on the balcony where she was trying to seek peace.

"Lovely party," she says, because it's the polite thing to say. "Astoria seems-" she chokes for a moment, barely enough to tell Hermione didn't immediately know what she was going to say, but of course he'd catch it, "-lovely." She winces at her own repetition.

"She is," Draco delicately says. "But she's not-"

"I didn't know you drank gin," Hermione blurts out, not capable of hearing whatever awful, sweet thing he was going to say.

Draco sighs heavily, swirls his drink, and takes a deep draw from it. "I have for a few years now."

"Oh. I see." She swallows and turns back to look over the gardens, not remembering when she'd let herself look at him. It hurts too much to do so for any length of time, so she generally avoids him.

But now he's come and found her, and she refuses to be the first to back down.

"I didn't know you had any interest in fashion," he counters. Hermione rolls her eyes and sips more of her champagne. Without knowing what else to say, she'd complimented Astoria's gown upon entering the Manor. Astoria had taken it as a sign to prattle on for five uncomfortable minutes about the designer and inspiration.

"Just in passing," Hermione finally says.

For a few minutes the only sound is the orchestra behind them and the peacocks on the lawn ahead of them. Hermione finishes the last of her drink, ready to slip back inside, make her excuses to Harry & Ginny, and head home, when he speaks up.

"It's like we've become strangers."

It's barely more than a whisper, hardly discernible over the din of the party, but it ignites a fury within her.

"And whose fault is that?" She whirls on him, voice low and dark.

"Mine, as usual," he sighs, resigned, fanning the flames of her rage.

"How dare you- you made your choices. You never let me have a say. You don't get to feel pity for your own mistakes when you never considered the alternatives."

He opens his mouth but she shakes her head.

"No. No, you don't get to break my heart and then parade your perfect, pureblood fiance in front of me and then try to apologize, or explain, or say anything." She's horrified to feel a tear slip down her cheek. "I knew I shouldn't have come but Harry- doesn't matter. I shouldn't have come." She sets her champagne glass on the balcony and pushes past him, leaving him standing on the balcony alone.

Only once she's home, changed into his old t shirt and tucked into his side of the bed, does she let herself succumb to her grief, sobbing until she falls asleep.

WIP ask game

I have a VERY MESSY, general outline for this, but it could change at any time. mostly just going where the gaang takes me!

the story is set 7 years post-war. yes, this is done so that toph can say "what up I'm toph, 19, and I never fuckin learned how to read." that's the only reason.

Sokka, Teo, and the Mechanist have invented phones, electricity, the Internet, search engines, and social media apps in those seven years. (if you like keeping your brain intact, you should definitely not think about the logicality of this story.) Iroh often helped generate electricity until the factories could sustain themselves and Toph was the one to create gadgets suitable for people who are blind.

on the seventh anniversary of the war's end, they unveil the phones to the public. the devices are available to everyone and there's no social inequity because this is my fic and what I say goes

they have Tumblr, but Toph insisted that they name it Rumblr. there is also Kohbook (haha get it like Facebook) that is used exclusively by the White Lotus, Kanna, Aunt Wu, and, for some reason, Bosco. cue ALL the facebook memes. we have them typing in capslock randomly, using all the wrong emojis at the worst time, shit-talking Pakku publicly because they forgot how to open HawkMessenger, praising their children/grandchildren/students to the skies and then ending with a really embarrassing anecdote...it's a fun time

idk a good name for the ATLA Twitter app (if you guys have ideas, help) BUT do you guys know that one account that pretended to be other people? I think the handle was jaboukie? they pretended to be other people by changing their username and profile picture, and then tweeted embarrassing things?? hopefully that rings a bell,, anyway - toph is going to do that. she likes the chaos.

uhh okay as for the actual plot, we start with an oblivious zuko and deep in denial katara. we also have suki and sokka who have to be separated for now, and there's a lot they're realizing they don't know about each other, so they have a bumpy road ahead. and then there's aang and toph who aren't even thinking of each other that way, but they will. they will

zuko is actually dating mai at the start of the story. that goes as well as can be expected from a zk story. as their relationship deteriorates, suki and toph are busy pulling katara out of denial, which culminates in the last snippet from this link

aang and toph development fhjkdsahf i still have to figure this out. never written them before so this will be a challenge

suki and sokka talk about how war has affected them. maybe they decide to take a break? look i really cannot write angst-less stories

iroh decides, after a few months of seeing zuko be mopey and face 107 assassination attempts, that he needs a wife. he arranges a whole partner selection thing without zuko's knowledge, and zuko, for all his Fire Lordy powers, doesn't know how to get out of this or refuse his uncle anything

katara is not included in the pool of possible wives, because everyone knows putting her name in a hat like that would piss her off. interestingly enough, she's pissed off anyway! it's anyone's guess why...

So...

Listen.

I have an angsty podfic for one of my all time favorite angsty stories by one of my all time favorite writers (you know who you are, Angst Queen, you). I could legitimately release it.

But, in all honesty: I hate how it turned out. I recorded it months ago, got it all made up.... Only to listen to it this morning and realize two important things:

1. I have gotten better at my readings. No seriously, a few months can make a world of a difference. In some ways, this was kinda cool, but also sucky, because I wish I had listened last week and found the time to record it before this morning. So, inspiration meets bad timing.

2. My soundbending has evidently improved as well. I still have things I'm working on, (i.e. better volume leveling is top of my list currently) but no longer do voices sound tinny, distant or muffled (at least, not as bad as this was.... *shudder*)

So while today was disappointing, and I won't be able to publish it and be happy, I'm already in the process of rerecording it. I will release it, but but it probably won't be this week since I have to finish up editing our serial. Please keep an eye here though. I'm excited to share it with you....

It starts at Southern Raiders and adds Zutara inserts and moments to the canon, then slowly diverges and continues past the end of the series to show how things develop between them. A Question

“Her-MI-nin-ny.”

“Her-MI-o-nee.”

“Her-MI-non-ee.” 

“Close enough.” She laughed and caught a glint of a smile in return. 

“Close enough is not good enough. Not in quidditch, not now.” He slapped the library table playfully and leaned over, his dark eyes glowing. “Her-MI-o-nee.”

She clapped—“That’s it!!”—then put a quick hand over her mouth. Madame Pince would surely be here any minute. 

“No.” He shook his dark head. “Not it.” 

“No? But Viktor, you—”

“Please.” He held up his palm, but the smile was now tugging at the corners of his mouth. Her stomach fluttered. He rarely smiled but each one was like a gift, transforming his face from forbidding to darkly handsome. 

“OK,” she nodded.  

“Her-MI-o-nee.” His lips formed the syllables of her name carefully and she felt herself almost sway toward him. “Will you go to the Yule Ball with me?” 

“Oh!” And now she did hear a sharp shushing sound from the vicinity of the circulation desk.

“Oh,” she said more quietly, the flutters turning into waves of warmth that flowed up her neck and into her face. “Yes. I would. I would like that. Very much.” 

“Good.” He raised his brows once, then looked back down at the text he’d been reading, the smile now spreading across his face. “I would like it very much too.”

FISI’s Favourite Zutara Fics

A lil late for ZFAW’s Saturday prompt, sorry about that! Haven’t had any internet over the weekend. But better late than never!

I’m not gonna lie… a lot of these are angsty af. But I promise you they’re not gratuitous angst! They’re well written, beautiful stories that will make you feel like a better person for having read them. These are my favourite all time fics, ones I’ve read more than once and will continue to read (even though I’m taking a week break from fandom and fic).

 Multi-Chaptered Fics

The Sparrowkeet Series by audreyii_fic

To be honest, this story’s summary doesn’t do it justice so I ain’t including it. Originally a one shot, Sparrowkeet is headcanon for me now. Move over canon, this is where it’s at. Audreyii_fic’s characterisation, world building, and writing is exquisite. It’s incredible. She manages to channel the same fun and whimsical energy from the show while allowing the characters to grow and develop to places I wish they had actually been taken.

This one is a fandom Must Read and one I return to regularly.

 Clothe Me in Seasons, Dress Me in Snow by sadladybug

It is not the memorial she deserves, nor the one she would want. But it can't be helped. He owns no property in the other nations, and he needed to keep her close. Closer than she was in life, anyway.

Zuko's reflections on a life lived and a life that could have been.

This is one of the best written fics I’ve ever read. It’s tragic and deep and will hurt you in all the tender places but you would be doing yourself a favour if you read this. There’s a real bittersweet feeling to it and the love between them is just… urg, visceral.

Zuko knew that he could not save Azula. He could only try to forgive her. Fittingly enough, those two were one in the same.

I love stories that make Zutara their centerpiece but every now but then a story like this comes along. A story where their relationship builds almost incidentally because the plot and character development straight up hijack your emotions. I got so invested in this story. Zuko is amazingly well characterised and his complicated thoughts and feelings around his father and Azula are incredibly well written!

Lunar Ephemerality by @formerlygoldilocks (goldilocks23)

After multiple failed attempts on his life and years of self-set expectations, Fire Lord Zuko is a shell of the man he used to be. But Katara won't turn her back on those who need her.

I really didn’t expect this to hit as hard as it did. This straight up snuck up on me, fly-kicked my feelings, and by the end I had written an 800 word comment that was too big for AO3 and I had to contact the author directly to send it to her. Awkward. I couldn’t help myself. The side to Katara we see here is so good, her empathy and love for her friends are one of the things I love seeing most in AtLA fanfic. I’m a sucker for Zuko having complete breakdowns and having to piece himself back together too. So sue me. I like it when they suffer a lil bit. The writing is absurdly good and I will be keeping an eye out for any new stories by goldilocks23!

 31 Minutes by @ifyouwereamelodymeg

It's quite astounding, really, how quickly she's learned to translate him. They've spent a grand total of zero time together outside of training, and he's hardly big on chat so she knows next to nothing about his life.

But she knows him, probably better than she knows anyone at the moment – with every tap of his fingers, every crook of his lips, every turn in his voice, he just...

He makes sense to her. It's weird.

I’m a sucker for fic writers playing with style to make the story pop and boyo does this fic deliver. This is one of the rare times that I’ve been dumbstruck at the end of a story— I just couldn’t accept the ending. Because I’m a sucker for pain, (and this story will bring The Pain) I loved it. The ease of Zuko and Katara’s growing relationship in this bowls you over, it’s absolutely beautiful and you find yourself nodding along emphatically when Zuko calls himself an idiot for waiting… “Life’s short, kids, live each moment as though it could be your last,” says this fic as it pulls my heart out and dropkicks it off a cliff.

I still haven’t forgiven Mage for this one. I think it’s the best thing she’s written to date! I mean, tragic and painful and heart-rending but holy shit is it powerful <3

 The Lake of the Dismal Swamp by @thewhiitelotus

Spook af. Spook (horror) is real hard to do well but thewhiitelotus is coming for your goosebumps and those shivers down your spine. She has a way of balancing beautiful, evocative imagery with action (in this and other stories of her) that just keeps you reading!

 Calloused by @rideboldlyride

Iroh hadn’t been able to watch. The pure horror of a man - a father- burning their child for a slight infraction... He couldn’t do anything to stop it, but he will stop his brother from destroying entirely the kind boy he knew Zuko could be.

This is a painfully underappreciated fic for how great the characterisation is. I know we in the zutara fandom tend to not read stories that aren’t Zuko/Katara centric as often but do yourself the favour of reading this (or listening to it: RideBoldlyRide has done us the gift of recording a podfic for this and it’s stupidly *good*). This story is Iroh confronting Ozai just after he burns Zuko’s face and it kicks.

 four days and three nights by @hinaoyamas (lettersfromnowhere)

Zuko discovers firsthand that nothing is more fleeting than happiness, or more enduring than memory.

Do you like reading stories with a distant, omniscient narrator? The kind that read like a myth from the ancient world? Welp, hit the hyperlink, friend, cause this one’s for you. Not only is the writing exquisite but the characterisation and painful inevitability of the plot is grade A.

 For the Fire Nation by tullyblue12

He falls in love with her for his country before he falls in love with her for himself. A Zuko/Katara AU that explores how love and duty aren’t always mutually exclusive.

There are about 40,000 exquisite lines in this story but here is just one of my favourites: “He falls in love with her for his country first. That’s what his people never understand.” This fic says a lot with so few words, which is something I really look up to! In 2,800 words, tullyblue12 does what some 100,000k fics cant: They make you feel.

 Guide Me Home by Rashaka

To sleep, perchance to dream. Katara and Zuko find a friendship they never expected in a place that seemed impossible.

This is a one shot I will forever wish for a continuation of. The setup is just… so juicy. There’s a real sorrowful innocence to this story that the unique short, dialogue only scenes really punch home. I know some people don’t like dialogue only fics but when done well like in this one, it leaves you with the impression of something deeper than a 1,185 word fic has any right to! 

 Other Favourites!

Hopeless by tullyblue12 — Kids grow up fast when a cruel world awaits them. In times of hopelessness, Katara and Zuko grow together. In times of separation, they hope to see each other again.

Speechless by goldilocks23 — Zuko has a medical condition. Or: Zuko speaks in haiku at inappropriate times.

Don’t Follow Me Down by eleventy7 — Katara is the dread queen of the underworld, ruler of the dead, destined to reign her cold kingdom alone. Until a sun god catches her eye. A Hades/Persephone retelling with incredible writing.

I Don't Speak Meow Language by @botherkupo (Boogum) — In which Zuko adopts a cat and Katara just wonders what spirits she pissed off to deserve this fate.

I have the privilege of being friends with some of these authors (they know who they are) and am in near daily awe and gratitude for the works of free fiction they provide us, the fandom. So I played alto/tenor sax in concert band but marched colorguard for 9 years and winterguard for 5, so there's lots of potential for band geekiness to appear in a high school/college marching band AU. I don't know if I'd like to write that fic, per say, but I'd read the heck out of it if someone wanted to take my experiences and write them 😂

I also have sort of started doing this, but on a tiny scale? Anytime I write someone stress baking, that's definitely coming from personal experience. I definitely haven't explored the full potential of that yet.

OH and the fic I wrote where Katara wore a fake ass customer service smile working as a barista? Gritting her teeth at rude customers and just feeling dead inside? Yeah I've got years of customer service experience to fuel that.

Check (Mate): Hermione was twenty-eight years old at the time she stomped down the hall, through the wide berth opening for her by Ministry workers rushing to move out of her way. The anger must have been obvious — a familiar Malfoy-shaped fury twisting, what Hermione would argue, was usually a very kind and approachable face.

Two Hearts, One Mind: “Bollocks!” Draco made a noise of frustration loud enough that the occupants in the booth next to him glared daggers at him. The dull vibration of the magically attuned feather was grating on his ears, and he had half a mind to stall its pathetic attempt at landing on the table and chuck it towards the group if they were insistent on being so jolly. There were two different reactions that the fickle plume could make, depending on how fast or slow you cast the charm as you raised the call from the witch who announced the questions at the front of the room near the bar. If you muttered the charm—a twist on Wingardium Leviosa—faster than your opponent, the feather would fly high into the air and announce your turn. If your opponent was faster than you, it would make a pitiful fall back down to the table, the soft swoosh and trickle of magic announcing its failure at becoming airborne.

When Meg first recorded this song and shared with us, i got absolutely blown away by the amazingness of it. I got chills. I got tears in my eyes. It was just so perfect and catchy, and just when I was recovering from Where the water flows, she shared another song, and then another, and i was so lost but also so in awe? I honestly dont know what im talking about here and i dont think anyone’s actually gonna read this rambling, but you guys, i was so, so honored she thought i was good enough to make art for her songs that i got overwhelmed for a while.

Meg was so patient with me during the whole process, actually not only her but Hayley and Doodle too, that i cant help but wish i had such comprehensive team working with me on my actual real-life work. These gals are just amazing.

I completely lost my point here. I just wanted to gush about the EP but i already ‘derailed on this’.

hi anon! i’m so glad you found my other list helpful! i love modern aus, so you’ve come to the right place.

my modern au tastes tend to be on the E-rated side, but i won’t be including any of those here. if you want a separate E-rated list, hmu. also only including completed stories here - otherwise the list would be too long

some great modern aus below!

ninety-nine percent fresh series by glowgal - this series of one-shots in which katara is a movie star is everything. so adorable, 1000/10, i love it so much. 

31 Minutes (Day 3: Fuse) by @ifyouwereamelodymeg - massive angst warning here, but get ready to be bowled over by the incredible writing in this firefighter au. still speechless over this one months later.

'cause i haven't moved in years (and i want you right here) by pentaghastly - this was an absolutely delightful au based on the movie palm springs. zuko and katara get stuck in a time loop at a wedding!! the most fun

Always the Bridesmaid by bluenebulae - zuko and katara go to a wedding as blind dates, plus we get jet as katara’s awful ex. super cute and so well-written (as to be expected from this wonderful author!)

What Remains When the Flowers Die? by @jaxsteamblog - the cutest multi-chap flower shop au. zuko is really soft here and i loved the writing!

Alternate Uses for Bathtubs by espadachina - this was recently recced for ZFAW and i am here to rec it again. it’s an adorable mini multichap in which zuko is an injured merman and katara keeps him in...you guessed it, a bathtub. 

blue brought us together by @fiyazu-lorko - a lovely one-shot in which zuko is a bartender and katara is a tired grad student. this one was hilarious. had some really sweet banter with an unexpected punch of feels

even when it runs into oceans by jamesstruttingpotter - katara and zuko are coworkers who are forced to go to a wedding together by dearest matchmaker toph. need i say more? 

A Delicate Balance by evergreen_on_the_horizon - this is a fantastic friends to lovers fic and a relatively quick multichap. i really enjoyed the writing in this one and the tension is delicious. (RATED M)

The (not so pragmatic) Tales of Ba Sing Se. by neincraff - katara meets zuko at a halloween party, but plot twist! he’s in the blue spirit mask so she can’t figure out who he is. turns out he’s one of those bad boys with a dark past. super fun read! (RATED M)
