That day after school you'd gotten let out of your last class early and waited in the parking lot for Sweet Pea, leaning against the bike with your arms wrapped around yourself as you get lost in your thoughts.
What's up?" Sweet Pea asks as he walks out of the school upon seeing the worried look on your face.
"Betty. And the others. They think I did something last night but I don't know what." You explain. "And whenever that group thinks someone's guilty they do a lot of research and dig up a lot of dirt."
"They shouldn't have any reason to go after you. We both said we were together and they watched us both leave."
"You and I both know they don't consider either of us reliable alibis." You say with a humorless laugh. "That means they're going to go digging and they're probably going to go into my past-"
"Y/n." Sweet Pea cuts you off, placing both of his hands on your arms, "they won't. And if they do, we can make cover stories."
"But-"
"No." He says sternly but gently, stepping closer to you and wrapping his arms around your waist. You let out a heavy sigh but it's cut off by Sweet Pea pressing a quick kiss to your lips. You can't stop the smile from spreading across your face, tilting your head up so you can face him.
"You are the best boyfriend." You smile, wrapping your arms around his neck.
"Could you not do your snake stuff in the parking lot?" Cheryl asks, both of you stepping away from each other to face the all too familiar girl with fiery red hair.
"You are literally dating a Serpent." You say referring to her relationship with Toni.
"When Titi and I do it it's cute. No one wants to see two nobodies make out." She says. "Go."
Sweet Pea gos to say something but you place a hand on his shoulder and shake your head before walking to where his motorcycle was propped up.
"What a bitch." He mumbles under his breath.
"Why don't we go to Pops." You say, pretending not to hear what he said. He says something else that you don't understand but drives you both to the chocolate shop with no other comments.
"Vanilla and peanut butter please." You say to the waitress after the two of you slide into a booth.
"I hate that people stare at us every time we come here." He sighs, looking around at a few uncomfortable North siders.
"Ignore them. I'm tired of them ruining our dates." You shrug, reaching across the table and taking his hand. He gives you a small smile and squeezes your hand.
"So do you have any idea what they are trying to pin on you?" He asks, changing the topic.
"No idea." You sigh truthfully. "It's stressing me out though. What if they figure out I --" you stop when you see Betty, Veronica, Archie, and Kevin walk into the restaurant, both you and Sweet Pea looking at the group of four. They look back, whispering a few things before sitting down across the room, shooting you suspicious glances as they whisper.
"That's great." You sigh, taking a sip of your milkshake that the waitress had set down moments before.
"Let's just pretend no one else is here, okay?" Sweet Pea says. You chew on your lip and nod, doing your best to only focus on him.
-
You had stepped into an alleyway in the heart of the Southside, looking over your shoulder to make sure no one followed you this time. Someone was waiting in the alley with a hood covering their face, you muttering a few nonsense code words before they lifted their hood. A boy around the age of seventeen with unruly brown curls and a soft face, looking more like a Northsider than not is revealed, showing off a smirk.
"Give me the letters." You say, wasting no time in small talk. You glance around, nervous that someone will find you here or someone could look out a window and see you or basically anything that could go wrong at that moment.
"Have the stuff?" He asks. You let out an annoyed breath and take out a bag filled with fizzle rocks, handing the drugs to him. He opens the plastic bag, eyes counting each vibrantly coloured packet. He clenches his jaw before grabbing your wrists and pinning you against the brick wall, his face twisted in anger.
"Are you trying to scam me?" He asks, his breath hot on your face. "You're missing ten."
"That's all they had." You reply, not letting him intimidate you. "I bought them out."
"Then I guess you don't get your letters." He says.
"Look, Matt, if you give me those letters I can get you the rest of your fizzle rocks and maybe a spot in Riverdale High." You try to bargain, watching the boys' expression of anger fall. He steps back from you and let's go, your hands rubbing your wrists where his hands had left red marks.
"You better have the candy by Friday. And I expect news about the school Sunday." He says and you nod. He thrusts seven sheets of paper against your chest, you letting out a quiet sigh of relief and grabbing them before they fell to the wet concrete below.
"See you in four days." He says with a smile before putting his hood back up and walking down the opposite end of the alley. After he's out of sight you groan, kicking the brick wall you'd been pinned against moments before. After gathering yourself you stuff the letters into your Serpents jacket and walk back the way you came, trying to make plans in your head for the stuff you promised Matt.
-
"So Y/n, let's have a chat," Betty says as you walked in the park on one of the sides of Sweetwater River.
"What about?" You ask, pulling out your earbuds. You see Veronica and Kevin with her, all of them staring you down.
"This." She says with a smile that she makes when she cracks something as she shows you a USB drive in her hand. Your stomach drops as you wonder what could be on the card. "Why don't we go somewhere else."
Reluctantly you went with the group to La Bonne Nuit that was empty excluding you four and Reggie Mantle who stood with his arms crossed over his chest and a stern look on his face.
"What's on the card?" You ask, sitting across from the others in one of the semicircle tables.
"What do you think is on it?" Kevin questions.
"Look, I don't know what you guys think you have against me, but I haven't done anything. Just because I'm a part of the Serpents doesn't mean I'm a criminal." You say, not letting your nerves show through your voice.
"What were you doing last night?" Betty asks, folding her hands on the table.
"I was with my boyfriend."
They don't say anything else, simply put the USB drive into a laptop and go through the pictures on it. It shows you walking into an alley, handing Matt the bag of Fizzle Rocks, Matt pinning you against the wall, and you talking to him.
"So you're following me now?" You ask, unamused by the pictures.
"That's beside the point," Veronica says. "What were you doing last night?"
"I was meeting up with an old friend." You answer. That was technically true.
"Old friend?" Kevin asks, pulling up the picture of you against the wall and Matt less than an inch away.
"What are you trying to say?" You ask, glaring at the three people in front of you.
"He seems like more than an old friend." Betty takes over, flipping through the pictures again. "Maybe a side boyfriend you sell drugs to?"
"Are you trying to say I'm a low life drug dealer who cheats on my boyfriend?" You ask in disbelief.
"If the shoe fits," V says.
"I can't believe it." You say with a shake of your head anger building up in your voice. "You have the audacity to follow me like creeps and then try to say I'm cheating on Sweet Pea when we're working on our relationship? And to add on the stuff about drugs?"
"Then what's in the bag?" Kevin counters. "And why was he against you?"
"I don't have to explain myself to you." You say, moving to gather your stuff and leave.
"Then I guess I'll give these pictures to Jughead or FP." Betty shrugs, forcing you to sit back down in a huff.
"It was some clothes he'd left at my house when he was staying with me. He got a little mad when there was a stain on his hoodie." You lie through your teeth.
"What's his name?" Veronica asks.
You pause for a moment before answering, "Sam. Sam Bennett."
-
That Friday you'd made sure that no one was following you that night as you met Matt in the alley that you hoped each time you wouldn't see again.
"Finally you do something right." He says after counting the packs of Fizzle Rocks.
"Yeah yeah." You sigh. "Last time we met someone followed me."
"What?" He says, anger rising in his voice.
"Don't worry I gave them a fake name." You assure him. "But they have pictures of both of us."
Matt is quiet for a minute before speaking again. "We're meeting under the bridge Sunday. And what name did you give them?"
"Sam Bennett." You answer.
"Then that's what everyone will know me as when I go back to school." He says, turning to walk away.
"Matt!" You call out, forcing him to turn around. "You can't tell anyone about this. Especially not at school." He nods before continuing his walk, you let out a breath before making your way back to Sunnyside.
-
The following Monday you were frozen in your tracks when you saw Matt strut into the school, his signature half-smile painting his faces. You saw people whispering as he passed, mostly girls, while you tried burying your face in your locker in hopes he wouldn't see you.
"Hey Y/n." He says in a not so friendly voice.
"Sam." You reply, closing the door to your locker. "I thought you weren't supposed to start until next month."
"Well lucky me they processed me in early." He smiles.
You go to reply but before you can Sweet Pea walks up and stands next to you, protectively throwing an arm over your shoulders.
"And who's this?" Matt asks, scanning Sweet Pea up and down.
"This is my boyfriend Sweet Pea." You answer, shooting him a warning look. "Sweet Pea, this is Sam." Pea nods at him, the two staring at each other trying to intimidate each other for a solid minute.
"Well as great as it was talking to you, we need to get to class." You say, pulling Sweet Pea along with you.
"Who the fuck was that?" He asks, looking over his shoulder at Matt.
"He's an old family friend. Moved here recently." You lie.
"Does he bother you?" He asks, protectiveness taking over his stature.
"It's fine." You smile, squeezing his hand that was still over your shoulder. "As long as I have my big tough boyfriend I'll be fine."
-
"Can I sit here?" You cringe as you look up and see Matt standing next to your table with a lunch tray in hand.
"Of course," Betty answers with her fake smile. He returns it and sits down next to you and across from Betty.
"I'm-" he starts before being cut off.
"Sam." She finishes for him. "I've heard about you." You shoot them both a warning glance as Sweet Pea and Fangs sit down. Pea sits down on your other side, obviously not happy Matt was next to you. His arm wraps around your waist and pulls you further from Matt and closer to himself so your legs and sides are pressed against each other. You don't protest as you pull your food overdoing your best to ignore Matt as he talks to the others at the table.
"Y/n and I go way back, don't we?" Matt says, turning to look at you. You purse your lips and raise your brow in response, not wanting to engage in conversation.
"Believe it or not, we actually dated for a year." He smiles.
You curse him in your head before turning to face him. "Yeah, you could say it was the worst year of my life." You say with a fake smile. "I'm going to get some water. Sweets?"
You both practically jump out of your seats and walk out of the cafeteria to the water fountain outside, you gripping the roots of your hair and letting out a frustrated groan.
"Family friend huh?" He asks, leaning against the wall.
"He is. He's also my ex. Most of the stories I have of bad exes are from him." You explain.
"Anything else about Sam you're not telling me?" He asks, not hiding his mild annoyance.
"Pea, you have nothing to worry about." You say. "Nobody is even in the same ballpark as you." As if to seal the promise you pull him down to you and stand on your toes and press your lips against his in a soft kiss.
"If he tries anything I'm gonna kick his ass." He says, his arms wrapped around your waist.
"I fully support that." You say. The bell rings cutting your moment short as both of you walk to your next classes, your thoughts for the rest of the day staying on how complicated everything was and is going to get even more complicated.
-
That night you both went to La Bonne Nuit, a nice date night that you hadn't had in a long while. Everything was going perfect until of course, Matt made his way down the stairs of the restaurant. He smiled when he saw you both, sliding into the booth you sat at.
"Hey, guys." He says, taking a sip of the drink he brought with him.
"We're kind of busy." Sweet Pea growls, hand on your thigh that showed through your dress.
"So sorry to interrupt your date, but I thought it would be great to get to know you two better." He says, stirring his drink. Much to both of your displeasure, he stayed, gradually making you angrier and angrier as if he enjoyed playing with fire for the next two hours.
Matt gets up to get another drink, making a quick stop to whisper something in your ear. "I'd suggest you join me for the next song unless you want your boy toy to know about our special meetings."
You glare at him, wishing you could slap him all the way to the parking lot as he winks and gets his drink. The next song comes along and he pulls you to your feet and you unwillingly follow him. Your hand is stiff on his shoulder while his arm holds you flush against him by your waist though his free hand travels around the area of your body.
"This isn't how this is going to happen." You hiss. "You're not going to get to blackmail me into doing all of this."
"Oh Y/n/n, this is only the beginning." He smirks, causing your stomach to drop. The song ends and you're quick to step out of his arms and into Sweet Peas who'd been watching in silent anger the entire time. He hated seeing someone else's hands on you, especially like that and especially Matt. His grip on you was tighter than usual but you'd gladly take it over the previous.
"I think we're going to go." He says through gritted teeth, guiding you to the stairs that led out of the bar.
"We should do this again, it was fun!" He calls after you. Sweet Peas hand squeezes your hip even as you both walk out of Pops. He's silent the entire ride back to the trailer park, still tense when you closed the door to his trailer.
"Sweets-" You start to say but are quickly cut off.
"What the hell was that?" Sweet Pea asks on the verge of yelling. You see anger and jealously flicking like a raging fire in his eyes, the flames burning his words.
"I thought if I danced with him he would leave us alone." You try to explain in an attempt to put out his anger.
"He fucking touched you. He held you like you were his!" He exclaims, now yelling loud enough for your neighbors to hear. He ran a hand quickly through his hair, making a mess of the raven locks. "He comes out of nowhere and thinks he can just take you from me!"
"He can't." You say in a calm voice. "Pea, I promise no matter what Sam cannot and will not take me from you. He will not come between us."
"He was, he-!"
"I know. You have to trust me, Sweets. We can't go back to screaming in each other's faces, if we do who knows what will happen, but if we have to talk about this we have to talk, okay?"
Sweet Pea stares at you for a few moments, his jaw clenched and body tight with anger still flickering in his eyes. You see him fighting back from yelling the words on the tip of his tongue, and instead, he sits down on the couch with a heavy breath. You walk towards him and stand between his legs, his arms wrapping around you and his forehead resting on your stomach. You comb your fingers through his hair in more of an attempt to calm him down as the anger slowly but surely fades away. The entire time you stand there you think about how much of a mess this situation was. Matt had left your life in shambles before and now that you'd rebuilt it and were in a good place he was coming in and ruining it. He was enjoying it too. He enjoyed having the power to do whatever he wanted to you and what scared you the most was this power. He had the power to do absolutely anything and you just had to hope everything wouldn't come crashing down around you.
