The Imperial Russian Airservice: The beginning of Military Aviation in Russia during WWI
“What next!?” Whenever I look at the picture directly above, I can "hear" Nicholas II thinking just that, with respect to his cousin and brother-in-law's interests, actions, and experiments.
Grand Duke Alexander (Sandro) Mikhailovich was a restless man of many talents and interests. Although he pursued a Naval career, his major contribution to his country and rank may be his role in the creation of the Russian Military Aviation School and the Imperial Russian Air Service.
Sandro had followed with interest the increasing sophistication of aircraft and their use for military purposes. And by 1910-1911, he was probably bored with Cannes, Biarritz, and growing seedless tangerines in the Crimea. The time was ripe for him to embark on a "project." Because of his proximity to the Tsar (he was his second cousin once removed as well as his brother-in-law, and one of the few Grand Dukes Alix got along with), he had access to the Tsar's ear (historians are still debating whether he used that access to the best advantage of his country or merely to his personal advantage.)
So Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich filled a need by helping create the Officer's Aviation School near Sevastopol in 1910 and later becoming the Imperial Russian Air Service chief during the First World War. Alexander held the Imperial Russian Air Service Field Inspector General position until the Bolsheviks relieved him from his duties.
At the beginning of World War I, the Imperial Russia Air Service had the largest air fleet in the world. It would be interesting to find out what happened.

Ukrainians are breaking their ties with the Russian language
By Francesca Ebel and Kostiantyn Khudov
Tumblr media
KHARKIV, Ukraine — In Kharkiv, a historically Russian-speaking city in eastern Ukraine, just 25 miles from the Russian border, Ukrainian classes are in high demand. Waiters, hairdressers and shopkeepers have stopped using Russian. Ukrainian language books are flying off the shelves, and local publishers are struggling to keep up with orders.
One of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s central — and false — justifications for invading Ukraine, that he was defending Russian-speaking people, has backfired dramatically.
In cities across Ukraine, people started bringing their Russian literature to local recycling stations to be shredded and converted into toilet paper. Street names have been changed to honor Ukrainian heroes instead of Russian writers. Russian dishes, like pelmeni dumplings, have been relabeled on restaurant menus. Radio stations stopped playing songs by Russian artists, long popular in Ukraine.
“For many people, it has become impossible to speak Russian because it is the language of the enemy,” said Iryna Pobidash, an associate professor of linguistics at Kyiv’s Igor Sikorsky Polytechnic Institute. “Russian is now a marker of everything that has happened: a marker of pain and tragedy.”
“Language is not only about communication, but also about positioning oneself. It’s my ‘who am I?’” Pobidash added.
Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov, who writes novels only in Russian, said that after the invasion, he felt “in pain” when writing because he was so ashamed of Russia.“I understood that Russia was destroying itself and destroying Russian language culture worldwide,” he said.

I learned a new word today: stabovator. A stabovator is a trailing control surface on a helicopter blade; specifically, the Curtiss-Bleecker helicopter. The blades on this particular experimental craft were more like airplane wings, each pulled by a four-blade propeller. It was hoped by the inventor, Maitland B. Bleecker, that his stabovators would help stabilize the machine so it could be controlled and flown successfully (unlike all other helicopters invented up to that point in 1928). It was not successful. The first practical helicopter was not developed until 1939 by Igor Sikorsky.

Russian Aerospace Forces will receive modernized Tu-160 bombers this year
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/07/2023 - 08:16 in Military
The Russian Aerospace Forces will receive four new Tu-160 strategic bombers this year, two of which will be the modernized version.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was informed of this during his visit to the Kazan aviation factory today. Two more Tu-160 were currently being produced for Russian troops.
Tumblr media
The second Tu-160M2 took off on September 17, 2021 in Kazan for the first flight.
The Tu-160 is a strategic supersonic missile transport bomber with a variable sweep wing, developed at the Tupolev Design Bureau in the 1970s and 1980s. These aircraft are the air component of the Russian nuclear triad. They are designed to destroy the most important targets behind enemy lines with nuclear and conventional weapons. They are capable of carrying 12 cruise missiles on board, with all weapons located inside the fuselage.
Tumblr media
The first prototype of the Tu-160M2 was not a new plane, but a modernized jet from the stock.
Serial production of the Tu-160 was discontinued in the 1990s and now Russia is working to resume the construction of the bombers in a new version - the Tu-160M. Externally, they do not differ from the basic Tu-160, but their combat capabilities have been significantly increased by expanding the range of the weapons and equipping them with new NK-32 engines of the second series, which allow them to increase the flight range by 1,000 km.
The contract for the supply of the first batch of 10 aircraft worth 15 billion rubles each was signed on January 25, 2018.
Tumblr media
On January 12, 2022, the first flight took place.
The Russian Ministry of Defense plans to order 50 of these aircraft and intends to modernize all 16 strategic bombers in service to the Tu-160M version.
The first prototype of the Tu-160M ??” Igor Sikorsky" was created based on a combat aircraft. Your first flight took place on February 2, 2020. On January 12, 2022, the first Tu-160M, built from scratch, took off for the first time.
