March for Jobs and Freedom, On This Day in 1963

#OnThisDay Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” Speech in 1963 at the March for Jobs and Freedom in Washington D.C. to thousands of union members.

Lost to history is the emphasis on the March for the fight for jobs that paid a living wage and the role of the labor movement in organizing this massive demonstration.

Images above depict members of the International Ladies’ Garment Worker Union (ILGWU) packing Pennsylvania Station in New York City, standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, heading on buses to Washington D.C., and marching through the capitol with ILGWU signs.

106.) In 2016, I asked for some suggestions as to what I could depict on a sweater in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. One of the top ideas was the “I have a dream” speech. My ‘dream’ of such a sweater came true a year later and I’ve worn it on MLK Day every year since. I also wore it on April 4, 2018, the 50 year anniversary of his death, and at various other relevant times. It's August 31st, 2022, the second annual ✊🏿 International Day for People of African Descent. The United Nations had already proclaimed 2015-2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent, but in its wisdom additionally created this annual day of observance to ensure we continue to honour the contributions of the African diaspora around the world long after this decade is over.

If you believe your life's purpose is to make the world a better place, then it's your duty as a Human Being to join the United Nations, not only in words, but in actions, as we strongly condemn the continuing violent practices and excessive use of force by law enforcement agencies against Africans and people of African descent and the institutional racism embedded in criminal justice systems around the world. We must acknowledge to ourselves and to future generations that the Transatlantic Slave Trade was one of the darkest chapters in our human history. By the end of this month (August 28) we will have marked the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Please take some time this week to learn about the remarkable accomplishments (and the struggles!) of that event's organizers, and the many OTHER speakers besides Dr. King. Learn about the lives of Bayard Rustin, Asa Randolph, Whitney Young, and of course the much-missed John Robert Lewis.

Learn also the reasons why such luminaries as James L. Farmer or James Baldwin DIDN'T speak, the role played by Prathia Hall, or why Daisy Bates ultimately was the only woman to address the crowd, that day.
