Harringrove Feedback Fest: Ihni recs FICS (<10K, complete)

I am loving the way this fandom spreads love around for the Harringrove Feedback Fest (you can see my other rec lists here), and the time has come to rec some FICS. For this list, they are on the shorter side, less than 10K but complete works.

This list is by no means complete. It’s just a random list of fics that I love and like, and I am very sure I have missed like, hundreds of others. That said, here we go:

all these to me by @lymricks is a perfect example of the boys having to share a bed, and I have always been weak for the fics which contains food ... and Billy can cook in this one! And because of lymricks, of course it’s PERFECTLY written. (Also, while you’re at it, check out it does ripple, because it’s bite-sized and have the most delicious misunderstandings with a side of happy endings.)

@flippyspoon has a whole library full of wonderful Harringrove content, but if I have to pick one favorite? It’s got to be The Favor, simply because it’s so goddamn charming and genius and ... fun! Always worth a re-read when I’m feeling down. <3 (To balance that one out, let me rec a story by flippy that made me ugly cry, complete with tears and snot; Dear Billy. No one dies, but JESUS. Ugh, my heart.)

Being a whumper, there’s a special place in my heart for fics about bruises, so against violet by @brawlite, where Billy reflects on bruises and hickies, is right up my alley. I love this fic, it’s so beautifully written.

If you’re feeling like reading a little flayed!Steve content with Billy handcuffed to a radiator, BOY do I have a rec for you! The Ghost in You by @lemonlovely remains one of my alltime faves, and I keep returning to re-read it (it goes with this piece by @saberghatz, if you want visuals!). And once you have discovered Lemonlovely’s PERFECT writing, and want more, let me direct you to Raise a little Hell, with the boys being BOYS in detention.

The Pleasure, the Privilege is Mine by @eatingmoonflowers lured me in with monster fighting, caught my interest with yellow paint, and broke down the door to my heart with brave love confessions. I can’t recommend it enough!

Another favorite is We'll Become Who We Meant To Be by @missroserose. Their writing is just *chef’s kiss* in general, and this one is my absolute favorite story by them. Just, how the boys are written and how the words make art. I love. <3

And then we have Of Fists and Firsts by @ohmybgosh with an adorable first kiss seen through someone else’s eyes. This one is hurt/comfort heaven. <3

midnight confessions by @gothyringwald is the sweetest thing, and has so much blushing - and I LOVE these blushy boys! The boys are fumbly and trying to figure out what they are to each other, and I love it.

A fic that made me cry (but oh, oh, such lovely perfect ending, don’t worry!) was Hard Road: A Comic Series by Steven S. Harrington by imperfectabstraction. Just, this one ripped my heart out, and then carefully wrapped it in cotton and put it back in my chest. If you haven’t read it, please do. So good.

The Road Trip prompt by @platypanthewriter made me, an aro person, sigh in happiness over ROMANCE. This is just ... so LOVELY. So romantic. Like a movie - it makes me YEARN, and it makes me feel the BOYS yearning. If you haven’t given it a read yet, do so. Your heart with soar.

Little Red Corvette has been recced before, and will be recced again, because it’s amazing (Billy’s scared and protective and desperate, Steve is freaking out, and Hopper is not getting paid enough to deal with this shit). But it’s by @heck-in-a-handbasket, so of course it’s great!

Rarely have I read anything creepier than He Needs by immortalitylost. Creepy in a good way! This created such a vivid image in my head - the whole scene, the feeling of it, the sounds and smells - it’s definitely one that I recommend people read. It’s like a painting, but with words.

@lazybakerart is one of my favorite artists in this fandom (and the world), but they have also been blessed with a talent for writing! Their story no longer one raindrop he is the endless sea is one that hits hard. In fact, I got stuck on that one when I made this rec list, because I felt a sudden need to re-read it. Again. Because they write the boys - Billy - so lovely and raw. It hurts so good.

mullets are stupid anyway by @drawacharge ALSO hurts in a good way. There’s just something about Billy’s hair being cut when it isn’t his choice that HURTS, but oooh, it grows and becomes so so good. One of my faves, for sure.

Did someone order Harringrove with a side of Murlexi? Good, because @prettyboyporter‘s got your back! Take a Sad Song and Make It Better is wonderful, if you ever wished that the boys were subjected to Murray’s particular brand of matchmaking.

@cherrydreamer is one of my favorites - authors, yes, but also people. Everything they write turn out amazing - fluff and angst and romance and whatever it is they do - and I grin to myself every time I get to read a new story by them. So have several recs: Spring Break, where the boys are outcasts and ruthless and raw - but gain an understanding, and why not just be outcasts together? Cocktober 13: Choking AKA Biting Off More Than You Can Chew because innuendos and cocks on sticks and boys at the fair <3 And Cocktober 10: Demon AKA BBQ Wings for Satan? because it’s my absolute favorite demon!Billy Story, and of course Steve managed to mess it up just right! XD But honestly, anything Cherry writes is A+

And BONUS RECS - fics that have SEX in them (more than just a little, too)! (Bet you didn’t think I’d rec THOSE, did ya? :p)

Perfectly Unnatural by @imneithernor is something so unusual as an a/b/o fic where much of it is smut - and which I LOVE. It’s so prettily written, and the tension between them is so tangiable and - come on, they’re on the Camaro. I can’t resist the Camaro. This is soooo good.

@sky2fall wrote In the Mirror, Lovely, and freaked me the fuck out. This fic made me go and cover the mirrors in my apartment, and I still get the chills when I read it. It’s WONDERFULLY written horror, and mostly smut. You guys will love it.

And lastly, I guess this is straight-up porn, disguised as a fic. But oh, it’s written in a way that paints a picture in my head, and I love the way the words flow. It’s poetry, it’s art ... and also yes, porn. brainless, by ShipperTrash140109. I printed it, to be able to keep it forever. That should tell you how beautiful it is.

Harringrove Feedback Fest: Ihni recs FICS (WIPs):

DON’T LET THE TITLE SCARE YOU AWAY. WIPs are nothing to fear; in fact following a story can be a MARVELOUS thing. All the anticipation, the butterflies in one’s stomach, the absolute JOY when you see that one of your favorites has been updated ...! It’s a glorious feeling.

For this list, I’m reccing fics that are still being written. Works in Progress. And as EVERY author knows, feedback makes us THRIVE, so go and give them a read (and some love!).

First up is Second Thoughts by @callieb, because I just read the latest chapter this morning (it’s back on a semi-regular update schedule, and it’s SO SO good and I love it so much! The boys have to work together reading Jane Austen right after the night at the Byers’, and we get to follow them on the road to forgiveness, friendship and ... well. Maybe more :p Let’s see what the future holds. OH, and also also ALSO, Operation: Child Endangerment, which is a fic where Billy joins the Scoops Troop down under the mall. It was written from my prompt, I’m proud to say, and I am very very very excited about it (and don’t worry @callieb, no rush, I just LOVE it but I’ll wait for YEARS, idc!)

As everyone who has ever read their stuff knows, @platypanthewriter is an absolute MACHINE when it comes to writing (they wrote 84K for the April prompts!!), and their story Strangest is a BEAST - but one that I love dearly! Misunderstandings, broken boys getting better, and angst with a happy ending. (Or at least I’m HOPING for a happy ending, what with it being ONE CHAPTER FROM FINISHED now!). Don’t let the word count scare you away - it’s 184K of greatness so far!

Some absolutely GORGEOUS writing can be found in @raquelobo3‘s The Monster at the End of This Book. I’m not kidding, I read ONE CHAPTER and the words wormed their way into my heart and into my brain and I gasped out loud and was SO IN LOVE with the writing, that I hit subscribe. Just, trust me on this one guys. Give it a read.

One of my favorite stories ever is Words Left Unsaid by @lemonlovely. I have been following it for years, and I love it so much. Every chapter is a gift, ever update a cause for celebration. Lemonlovely has the ability to sneak in details into their writing that makes me gasp (and then google). Just, they create a special kind of atmosphere with their words, and I cannot recommend it enough. (And since we’re talking fics by Lemonlovely, I also have to rec Where is my mind, where Steve gets amnesia after the night when they closed the gate, and basically only remembers Billy ... only he thinks they’re friends!)

Speaking of amnesia fics ... pretty boy + blue by @gideongrace is AMAZING so far, and I have inside information that says it’s gonna CONTINUE to be amazing, too! It ALSO has Steve with amnesia ... but this one is the opposite of the last one, in that they’re already together when Steve forgets ... and he doesn’t remember Billy as anything but a bully. ANGST AHOY (sign me the FUCK up!).

A Love I Can Never Have by ExTeenageDirtbag is one of those fics that live rent-free in my brain, and I cannot let go of it. Four chapters that absolutely DREW ME IN, with Upside Down shenanigans with the whole crew and deliciously outcasted (yes, now it’s a verb) Billy. Some scenes from this are BURNED ONTO MY RETINAS and I seriously, for real, would dance of joy if it got updated. And even though it’s a WIP, I still go back and re-read it at times. Because it’s just that compelling.

@laveracevia wrote Who’s Gonna Drive You Home? and it has hurt/comfort and boys SLOWLY (very slowly) getting closer, and secrets spilling out and being snowed in, and cold and hurt boys and just - so much that I absolutely love. (Come to think of it ... I think it’s due for a re-read ...)

The Parent Escape by @little-werewolf-oven is ... such a goddamn GREAT fic premise! I have been known to re-read this at times when I need something good and familiar. Basically Billy has an unknown twin brother named Jason, and they meet at juvie camp. Jason is curious about his real dad, Billy’s excited about a chance to NOT have to be with his real dad for a while ... so they switch places. It’s great! Read it.

The next rec, I wanna preface it ... pref... uh, START, by saying that I am usually not a big fan of a/b/o? Like, I am a casual a/b/o reader, at best. But there are some works out there that lures me into this trope and is slowly winning me over, and one of those is Here I Go Again by the uncomparable @heck-in-a-handbasket. Billy as an Alpha who’s a single caretaker of Max, and then Steve, who’s an (outcast) nanny omega who don’t need no man (but who maybe wants one anyway). Okay so my description of it is shit, but I love this story and highly recommend it.

There’s something very interesting about a Billy who finds alternate means to get some cash, and  dulcepericulum (keziahrain) is writing this story Don’t let me in, I don’t know what I’d do which deals with Steve finding out about that. I am very into it and always am happy to see an update!

@cherrydreamer is one of the best people around, and so far I have loved everything by them I have read. I’m gonna have to hurry and rec Fill the Empty Spaces, since it’s just one measly chapter away from being finished. It still counts as a WIP though! And it’s just so ... delicious! The boys are written perfectly, there’s COOKING and the QUARRY and the KIDS and D’n’D ...! Just, do yourselves a favor here. Read this. (And leave it some love!). (Oh, and if you’re like me and can’t resist a birthday fic, don’t miss out on their Blow Out the Candles of your Cake (They Will Not Leave You in the Dark))

How Near You Stand To Me by @boudoirwriter is FANTASTIC and PAINFUL and SO SO GOOD. Like, this is a kind of fic that I get so exited about when it updates, but then I have to psych myself up to reading it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely fantastic. It just deals with heavy topics. And if you’re up for it, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s just ... wow.

And okay, listen. Simple Man by @straight-outta-hobbiton is probably the reason why I have like ten books of self-sufficiency and prepping currently in my bookcase. Billy finds a cabin in the woods, and ... moves in. And gets, like, chickens and stuff. Learns how to survive off the land. It’s good for him, it’s good for me, it’s good for everyone. It doesn’t have to be complete to be absolute greatness.

In the mood for a time loop? Great, because unstuckintime is writing over and over again where Steve is stuck in a time loop, immidiately after Starcourt. Mmmm delicious.

And the last one here DOES count as a WIP even though it technically hasn’t been posted on AO3 yet (but I’m already following @gravegroves on there, in anticipation of whatever will be posted!), but this snippet of an AU where Neil is the Mindflayer gripped me by the heartstrings and pulled, and now I’m eagerly awaiting more of it. (More of ALL their writing, really, since everything they’ve posted so far has been *chef’s kiss*)

Harringrove Feedback Fest: Ihni recs COULD-HAVE-BEENS/SHOULD-HAVE-BEENS:

More recs for the Harringrove Feedback Fest (my other rec lists are here).

I don’t know what to call this list, honestly - it’s edits and gif sets and Harringrove stuff ... incorrect quotes and alternative scenes. In short, things that COULD have been (and SHOULD have been). You’ll see what I mean.

First out is @hoegrove who is insanely talented and does things like this (god please, my left arm for alternative beginning!), and this (makes me grin every time I see it, it works so well!), and this (*gigglesnorts*). This one always makes me laugh (Billy’s facial expression!), this one is hilarious (I can HEAR it in my head), and this one was ALMOST enough to save that song for me. Also, their Stranger Things x Until Dawn things are wonderful, and this one is my favorite.

Then there’s @plistommy who also make fantastic what-ifs such as this one and this one (the fanfic potential in these two works ALONE!). Yes hello I would like a 30K fic for each of their work, please and thank you.

@disdaidal made this, and also, incidentally, made my whole day with it. I can very much see this happening, and shamelessly “flirting” Billy is the best Billy!

And Steve being a romantic is also so easy to see - everyone in @cherrydreamer’s thing here are so in character, and it’s a goddamn joy to imagine this. It just reads TRUE to my brain XD <3

This concept by @memes-saved-me is a good concept for sure, and they also have created gems such as this one (lol, poor scarred children), this one (with bonus ficlet!), this one (romantic dinner interrupted) and this one (where everyone knows and Steve tries to play it cool :p). In short, a gold mine of fantastic could-have-beens!

How cool would Billy with pyrokinetic powers have been??? Luckily, @kairosz made that happen in this here thing (which I LOVE).

@draculcid made me laugh out loud with this one, in which Keith probably regrets all his life choices .... XD

It’s a skill to see two screenshots and put them together as perfectly as this, like @rascheln did. Also they made this fantastic edit, which ... yes please. Please. I live for the self-sacrificing bullshit, I want more of this, I love it, it’s amazing. <3

This by @lethal-desires broke my goddamn heart, but oh it’s so good, the possibilities! (And the COLOURS of that thing!!)

One of my favorite things that always makes me smile when I see it is this by @matchstickwords, because it’s so sweet. (What’s that thing that we often write Billy as? Moronsexual? Yeah. That :p)

And last, but certainly not least, this work of art by @badboyhargrove. Genius, pure genius, to put those two together. <3

Harringrove Feedback Fest: Ihni recs ARTWORKS (part 1/3):

Right. Do you KNOW how fucking HARD it is to rec ART?? Because this fandom has so many talented artists and I can’t mention all of them no matter how I try. So, for the Harringrove Feedback Fest, I’ll just randomly throw a bunch of my favorites onto lists. A FEW. I know I’m missing out on a bunch, and I’m sorry in advance. But here you go, an incomplete list of art I fucking adore:

- Let’s start off with @kingsandsaints who is fucking FANTASTIC. Their dad Billy art (here and here and here, with the first one being my absolute favorite!) makes my heart clench and I ADORE how they draw the boys; just look at this and this (aaah sleepy in love <3) and this and this (more sleepy boys)! It’s so realistic and their piece for the Harringrove zine was one of my absolute favorites. <3 Every new artwork is a gift.

- This whole-ass comic by @deathbyotpin123-old makes me so happy. Look at their expressions! And the ending is so sweet, and so perfect.

- This piece by @retrouvel ripped my heart out of its chest. Ugh, it’s so intence with the face touching and the teary eyes. I love!

- benalras seems to have deactivated, and I miss their art. Just look at this absolutely delicious kiss.

- @saberghatz is unfairly talented in everything they do, but I’m not complaining since I get to enjoy all of it. <3 Their art is fantastic; just look at this kiss at the quarry and this (the last one being a non-harringrove drawing but I’m including it anyway because it was for meeeee and I love it so much <3). Highly recommend following Saber.

- I get very happy about @wasting-time-again‘s art. It’s the traditional aspect I think; the anatomy and the sketchiness. Look at these! (And this one which always makes me laugh!)

- Okay, okay, sit yourselves down comfortably because I’m gonna link a whole bunch of @lazybakerart‘s pieces. When I say they’re one of my favorite artists, I’m a) not joking and b) not only talking about fandom. I mean EVER. Their style is just ... every-changing, dynamic, and ALWAYS packs a punch. I am ... so, so lucky to know them. If I wrote WHY I liked every piece we’d be here all day, so I won’t. But here; feast your eyes on this one (so soft!), and this (road trip boys), and this (sharing a milkshake) , and this (the zine piece, which I love to pieces), and this (a whole COMIC, which I’m still amazed by <3) , and this (pop art Harringrove, but better, and I love the simplicity of these), and this (the scaaaars <3), and this (the first commission I ever got, and I still get heart eyes when I look at it), and this (another commission, in another style, which I also love!! <3) but honestly any of their work is fucking amazing and every new piece steals the breath out of my lungs.

- @kelpie-earnest has some iconic pieces and their art is so clean and pure! Look at this and this and try not to fall in love with their happy boys, I dare you!

- This piece by @harringrove-sketchbookpages has such an unique style and I am in love with the colours.

- I have recently been lucky enough to make @deardmvz‘s aquaintance (through a collab for this, incidentally), and their art is just ... *chef’s kiss*. Judge for yourselves: This one with lovely boys in the grass, and this one with boys in skirts and A+ faces.

- @darkmystdrake has an art style that makes everyone elses seem messy; lines and colouring are so crisp, that it feels that if I reach out and touch it it’ll be smooth <3 Here’s an example; feel free to check out the rest of their work too!

- I really like @gothyringwald‘s art, their style is so illustrative and easily recognizable. Just look at this (boys’n’bubbles) and this (best valentine’s!) and this (god what I wouldn’t have given for a scene of the boys rollerskating in short shorts)!

- @juu-riin makes the most amazing little doodles that always make me laugh (one of the reasons I go on twitter honestly!), but also fantastic pieces like this one (hnnnng, Billy with fishnets and high heels under a suit???) and this one (spicy!).

- This little comic by @crubdraws cracks me up every time. The expressions! The eyes! How much it makes SENSE! XD I fucking love it.

Harringrove Feedback Fest: Ihni recs FANVIDS/ANIMATIONS:

For the Harringrove Feedback Fest, it’s time for the awesomeness that is FANVIDS and ANIMATIONS.

- Steve’s having a bad day but at least he’s got a good boyfriend in this vid by @plistommy, and this one always makes me fucking cackle!

- @saberghatz is unfairly talented in all ways (art, writing, design - and video editing), and is responsible for this absolute gorgeousness where the boys run away together, and this, which you can show anyone who asks why we ship Harringrove ...

- The Neil scene with a Harringrove twist by @draculcid here is like straight out of a fanfic and I love it. They also did this, which is short and hilarious.

- This draft for an animation by @kyrosh is short and unfinished, but my heart skips a beat when I see it anyway because it’s so THEM and I fucking love it. My god. So beatiful.

- steve & billy | cringe by youtube user nedlovesyou is so well done, and hurts like a motherfucker to watch. It’s like watching a fanfic. I love it.

(INTERLUDE: the last vids have been Harringrove, and the following are more like character centric, but I have to rec them too because i love them dearly. So if you can stand non-Harringrove content, check below: )

- Billy Hargrove | Let You Down by youtube user KW is also on the painful side, but if you want feels, definitely give it a watch! (A bit more Billy centric than Harringrove though)

- billy hargrove | paint it black by youtube user xbreathofmadness is not technically Harringrove (or, like, at all), so it doesn’t really belong on this list, but listen. Listen. I can’t not rec it because it’s eerie and beautiful and my boy is suffering so much and I watched it while I was looking through my favorites to make this rec list and I’m hurting, and I need to share the pain! So. You’ll have to deal.

- Okay so if Billy got his own vid rec in the last one, let’s give Steve one too! Steve Harrington || Another One Bites the Dust by youtube user Grable424 (whose other work is also phenomenal, just saying) is fucking fantastic, and manages to sum up Steve’s character in a few minutes of well-edited video. One of my favorites, for sure.

- Okay so that last one there wasn’t very angsty - so let’s end on an angstier note! The absolute fantastic creation that is WORDS FAIL // billy hargrove animatic by youtube user parkerccino never fails to make me teary-eyed. A whole ass animated short video, made to hurt. I can’t do anything but love it.
