the important thing to remember about the "five watching the master burn to death on sarn" situation is that the last time they saw each other was in 'the king's demons' where the master deliberately engineered a situation where the doctor would have to beg for the master's life & then show just how much (little) those words meant by being made to choose an innocent's life over the master's. the master screams as he's being forced into the iron maiden. the doctor can't watch, doesn't even turn his head, squeezes his eyes shut. when it dematerializes, the doctor looks to whatever the gallifreyan equivalent of the heavens is in relief/exasperation. the master laughs to himself in delight inside his tardis. the doctor looks just a little unwillingly fond as tegan asks "what's the master up to?"

so when we get to 'planet of fire', with the master cajoling, threatening, begging, "won't you show mercy to your own—?" it's a boy who cried wolf situation. is he condemning the master to death in that moment? is he letting him burn under the assumption that it is a trick? the hope that it is? clara doesn't tell him "if you have ever let this creature live, everything that happened today is on you" until lifetimes later, but you know that same refrain is running through his head. he can't, in good conscience, save the master — the man who killed his fourth self, who killed nyssa's father & now walks around in his corpse, who destroyed nyssa's entire planet & people & a whole entire third of the universe, who abducted adric & tortured him. i think five looks determined as he watches the master burn but also, briefly, devastated. he walks towards the flames after the master disappears... hoping for what? the sound of the master's tardis again? his laughter? but the doctor has to turn and walk back to his tardis in silence.

#and then ainley isn't dead after all in 'mark of the rani' so who knows... maybe five was right not to fall for the 'trick' #i've made gifs of the king's demons part of this but idk if ppl connect it to planet of fire #there's something. something about the decision being simultaneously in & out of the doctor's hands in both these situations. #something about the master orchestrating things... the illusion of choice. the illusion of hands being tied. #the doctor's self-shouldered burden of Goodness vs a little selfish hope that he hides even from himself. #that the master drags into the light. #doctor x master #dw #(eta: in the heady compulsion to make this point i forgot that the last time they saw each other was actually in 'the five doctors' lmao) #(but i think the point still stands)

TBH I think Skyrim making children unkillable causes more problems than it solves

You can’t kill them, but you can hurt them, and while they’re fairly unlikely to attack anything that’s hurt them, they will run away from it. And like, okay, this one’s kind of on me for not realizing sooner that fireball does AoE damage, but look. Look. If I can’t cast illusion spells through cell bars why wouldn’t I assume that the kid being inside a cell would protect her from fiery violence? I think this was a perfectly reasonable assumption, quite frankly.

So after I kill the boss I open up the cell and this girl sprints out, screaming for help, bolts down to the bottom of the fort, and books it down the road in a random direction, and I’m sprinting after her like, “Wait! Wait! Come back! I’m supposed to take you to Markarth! Don’t you want to go to Markarth? I didn’t mean to hit you in the face with a fireball, come back!” But listen, listen, she keeps going. She’s headed for Solitude. She’s going. It’s all I can do just to keep her in draw distance because those little buggers are fast.

Stroke of luck, she leads me right past this camp full of vampires and I almost gave up and resigned myself to just never setting foot in Markarth again. Stopped to loot a chest, and what do I find but a Calm spell tome. I have no idea what level a child is, but we’re hoping it’s real low. I learn the spell and bolt off in the direction she went in, and it turns out that once she was outside a certain radius she stopped running from me, so I hit her with the calm spell and what do you know, it works. She calms right down, starts making Generic Child conversation, and starts following me happily down the road. For thirty seconds.

At the end of thirty seconds she starts screaming and running again, but I expected this, so I nail her with another calm spell and she comes trotting back, tells me how excited she is to learn from the priestesses, and keeps on following me for the next 30 seconds. The second I hear her start yelling. I hit her with another calm spell.

We went almost all the way from Solitude to Markarth like this (where I got arrested almost immediately for having a 40g assault charge and had to go find the kid again after I paid the fine), and quite frankly I found it much creepier than if I had just accidentally killed the girl and failed the quest.
