im pretty sure this is disneys fault but sometimes i am exposed to whatever the hell is going on with the us’s public domain laws and i feel like im trying to decipher the code of the matrix

#how do you guys handle this. theres like ten thousand specific conditional phrases for every year something was published #im glad u guys finally got great gatsby in the public domain now tho #im eternally grateful for canadas pretty short timeline for public domain stuff (only 50 years after the authors death) #but also yesterday i was thinking about some ideas for ocs based off an old book but then i realized wait is it in the public domain??? #and then i googled the author and when i saw he died around the 1910s i had the thought 'oh thank god' in my head #so there is that............................................................ #of course you always gotta be careful of trademark stuff like tarzan and anne of green gables #especially things where estates (or also i think the pei government in annes case?) are particularly vigilante about trademarks lol #but man. us public domain laws are rough to look at. we should kill the mouse
