im on day 4 with Frontiers and i gotta say some shit!!! it’ll be vague but minor spoiler warning just in case

so like i said a bit ago, im taking my sweet time and writing notes cus this is the first time in a DECADE a Sonic game’s gonna last me longer than 3-4 hours and im savoring that for all it’s worth. im still on the first island, and im not leaving till im better at the controls (im okay in Open Zone but get tripped up in Cyber Space because my Boost-era muscle memory keeps kicking in and oops i Stomped into the void again). playing this slowly feels unnatural, but i thought i could do it.

but today, i saw a cutscene that implies something BIG about the Islands’ past. and now the slow-and-steady approach is gonna be so much harder. i am chomping at the bit to understand what i just saw. i can basically buy extra story crumbs, but i want loaves of it in my mouth right now.

because... that’s how i’m used to consuming Sonic stories. starting out, i couldn’t afford the consoles to play them, so I read summaries on wikis and watched cutscene compilations. by the time i had the money, i’d spoiled every game with substantial plot for myself. lots of these games tug at your heartstrings in surprising ways; i love those games dearly, but knowing the tug was coming and when really did lessen their impact on me.

and because most of the games after that didn’t try to tug, i’ve always felt like i missed out on something.

ive waited for a game that dared to tug again for 13 years. and Frontiers just did it. it’s not a decade-old game i don’t have the console for, it’s a game that came out this month, that i’m playing right now. it's consistently kept me bouncing between “what the fuck” (confused but delighted) and “WHAT THE FUCK” (SCARED BUT EXCITED), and it’s got a mystery i can let slowly unfold, absorb in pieces by design, like i’ve always dreamed of.

and it feels so alien that i have to consciously keep myself from looking stuff up and sabotaging it all. i feel like that one guy who finally found water after dehydrating in a desert and drank so fast it killed him. i’m so fucking thirsty and i know better than to just gulp the water, but it hurts to wait. it’s horrible and amazing and i hope im getting the feeling across.

is the game making anyone else feel this way, or am i making a mountain out of a molehill? seriously, if im just insane from being here way too long, please be honest with me

i had to do lots of research for this so i hope i got things right. if anything is ridiculously off, let me know!!

also anon said either philkas or evak and i realized ive never written for isak and even so if yall want that i can give it a try!!

“What a fun date.” Lukas says, arms crossed against his chest, sitting low in his chair, foot tapping the linoleum. Philip can’t help but smile, looking over at him.

Lukas is right. Getting tested for HIV isn’t exactly romantic.

But it’s way more prevalent among young gay men than with straight people, and considering Philip’s history, it can’t help to check.

He doesn’t often talk about the things he did before he came to Helen and Gabe’s; he doesn’t often talk about how he kept food on the table and how he paid the bills. He’s told Lukas bits and pieces, and each time he does, Lukas gets this sad look on his face. He pulls Philip into his side, and presses a kiss to his head. Partly because he doesn’t know what to say, and partly because he wants to make him feel better.

It isn’t Lukas that isn’t open to talking about it. It’s Philip. Most days, that’s not something he wants to rehash.

“It’s just a blood test.”

“And a cup of pee.”

“You drank like four bottles of water this morning. You’re probably good on the pee side.”

Lukas makes a face.

“I’m staying hydrated.”

Philip grins, brows arching.

“Are you hydrated, Philip?” Lukas asks pointedly. Philip tilts his head, giving an innocent look.

“No, I’m actually quite thirsty.” He says. Lukas tries to stifle a grin, and looks away.

“Well, you’re gonna have to deal with it. The results take time.” Lukas says. He realizes immediately after he says it that he too is included in the abstaining, and frowns.

“Damn.”

“Looks like we’ll have to do something else to pass the time.”

“Because we spend so much time doing that.”

Lukas’ cheeks flame, and he rolls his eyes.

“They’re taking blood, right?” He asks.

“Need me to hold your hand?”

“Shut up.” Lukas says. Philip laughs, and drops his hand on top of Lukas’ knee. Lukas tugs Philip’s hand into his lap, drawing small circles into the top of his hand.

“Are you afraid of needles?” Philip asks. Lukas shakes his head.

“No. You?”

“Nope.”

“You can hold my hand anyway, if you want.”

“Oh, can I?” Philip asks. Lukas laughs, and tips his head back against the wall eyes closing.

“Philip Shea?” A nurse asks, coming through the door. Philip pulls his hand away from Lukas, and stands up.

“Ready?”

“Yep.”

Then she takes him back.

The two lay sprawled on Philip’s bed, Lukas’ head on Philip’s lap, Philip sitting against the headboard. His hands rest in Lukas’ hair, messing with it, twirling its short strands.

“What if my test comes back positive?” Philip asks, voicing the words that have been swirling around in his head and stomach, making him feel sick, for the past week.

“We already use condoms.” Lukas says.

Philip frowns, looking away.

“There’s stuff you can take. Medicine. That way it won’t turn into AIDS. Like, the medication is really good.”

“How do you know this?”

Lukas’ cheeks flush, and he focuses his attention on the ceiling.

“I might have brought all the brochures home with me. And read them multiple times.” Lukas says.

“Really?”

“Yeah. I mean, if it comes back positive, it isn’t the end of the world. It’s the 21st century, dude. America has some good drugs.”

Philip can’t help but laugh. Lukas brings Philip’s hand to his chest, resting in below his chin, warm breath hitting Philip’s fingers.

“We’ll deal with it. We’ve dealt with everything else.” Lukas says.

“Triple homicide vs. HIV. It never ends.” Philip says, half joking, half not.

“You don’t even know if we have it. Or if one of us has it.”

“If anyone has it, it’s me.” Philip says. Lukas’ brows furrow, and he sits up, keeping Philip’s hand in his.

“You did what you had to do. Shit happens. If you try and beat yourself up over that, I’ll-“ Lukas stops, obviously not sure which punishment to threaten Philip with.

“I won’t kiss you. For a week.”

“A week?”

“A week.”

“You wouldn’t make it.”

Lukas feigns offense.

“I would challenge you, but I really don’t want to.” Lukas says. Philip smiles, and Lukas resumes his earlier position, head on Philip’s lap. Philip takes up the mussing of Lukas’ hair, and for a few minutes, neither of them speaks.

“Seriously, though. We’ll deal with it.” Lukas says.

Philip presses his lips together. Up until a few months ago, he never had an ally. It was Philip vs the world.

And all of a sudden, he isn’t on his own. It’s Philip and Gabe and Helen and Lukas against the world.

It’s nice.

“Okay.” Philip says, with a small smile on his lips.

It’s really, really nice.
