Daybreak in progress- This was done in a 2 day sitting on Arches 300 lb Cold Press. It's only about 7x10" and was painted with Agallo/Schmincke/Daniel Smith colors.

I don't normally use black at all. If I do, I custom mix it, and it's a deep blue tone as tube black is often "flat" looking to me. However, doing that for this series was going to be a problem as I needed a large amount of mixed black.

While over all Daniel Smith watercolors are not my first choice, they partnered with Larin McCracken who is a legend and is famous for mixing his own black color that is unlike any other color. However to make the original you needed like 9 tubes of paint from 4 different companies and mix up like a pint at a time.

DS worked with the artist to make McCracken black. It is the key for me on making the wintersoldiers uniform. It can be lifted and layered to mimic light and matte materials. But retains uniform black rather than blooming in to its component pigments.

I hope this was interesting.
