I'm not sure if anybody asked you this, but do you see Never Again as coming before or after Leonard Betts?

tbh i used to agree with the order as aired, but especially after rewatching, in my personal canon it’s as written. with never again before leonard betts. firstly, it just would change so much of the intended impact of never again if you watch it through the lens of scully knowing she’s dying. that would make her introspection and “rebellion” catalyzed by the knowledge that her life is ending, rather than something she’s coming by of her own accord (her own “cycle,” as she describes).

one of the most quietly moving moments of the series is that opening shot of never again: the camera slowly spinning to reveal scully at mulder’s desk, holding the plate with his name on it, looking around the room at his posters and his files and his notes. thinking, where am i? where is my space here? if you contextualize that moment, and her asking why she doesn’t have a desk, as something she’s reflecting on as she’s preparing to leave, rather than something she’s questioning as she moves forward, it diminishes the impact in my opinion.

additionally, i think the arc needs leonard betts as a buffer leading into memento mori. there is a very easy reading of leonard betts as following the tensions of never again, it’s a little ridiculous and they’re a little uneasy with each other. scully is a little more frustrated and resigned than usual. i love that moment in the end, when mulder comes to tell her that she did a good job and should “be proud” of herself, and she says she just wants to go home. i don’t think mulder truly learned the lesson of never again for a couple of years, but i like to think that appreciation and support was purposeful. it just makes more sense to me tonally.

there’s also something so tragic to me about the final shot of leonard betts, the first sign of trouble, the first drop of blood, hitting her directly after everything she went through in never again.

never again is a mutual realization: this is it. there is nothing we can do, nothing we can say, nothing we can change. we are dying together. you are coming down with me. and as originally written, it is not the result of a death sentence, but the precursor to one.
