A ficlet based on @b1rdza‘s imaginary friend!Ranboo AU, which I love dearly and am now obsessed with.

.....or, in other words, I wrote some hurt/comfort on my phone during dinner to cope with my horrible day. Here it is. Bon appetit

Finn, please tell me if I got anything wrong with the AU lore ^v^

Tubbo slammed the door behind him, harder than he meant to, and flung his backpack onto the floor by his bed. A muffled shout from below warned him not to slam doors. He ignored it, falling face-first into his bed. Almost immediately, his face was wet as he buried it into his blankets. Silent sobs wracked his body.

It was shit. Everything was shit and he was alone. High school was horrible, even worse than last year. Why had he thought sophomore year would be better than freshman? What was going through his head? It was all shit. Equally awful. And now, he thought, he had no friends to see it through with him. Tubbo couldn't believe it took him so long to realize that they didn't want him around anymore.

A hand settled on his shoulder, hesitant and gentle. Tubbo sniffled. The weight was comforting. He turned his head and, out of the corner of his eye, saw Ranboo.

"Hi, Boo," he said. His voice sounded rough and miserable.

"Hi, Tubbo." Ranboo's response was soft, but sure. His voice was comforting. Strong, Tubbo thought. Ranboo had a strong voice. He wondered if he made him that way because he needed it.

"You wanna talk about it?" Ranboo asked hesitantly.

In response, Tubbo turned his head back into his sheets and grumbled out a wordless sound of denial.

"Ok.. that's ok." Ranboo's hand on his shoulder patted him comfortingly, then moved to the small of his back and rubbed gently. It felt childish, but good. Tubbo's mother used to do this for him when he cried, back when he was little... he missed it.

Slowly, his breathing evened out, and he began to relax. He still felt like shit, but now he was tired from crying, and it was much easier to drift in and out of conciousness with Ranboo by his side. His friend was speaking, talking about something, but Tubbo didn't listen to the words; he just hummed in response and let the words wash over him.

"Tubbo...? You feeling better?"

"Mmm... you know, you're a dick."

He could almost see the affronted look on Ranboo's face, even with his eyes closed. "You kept making faces at me in math today. Everyone looked at me weirdly when I laughed."

"... I thought you liked that."

"It was pretty funny," Tubbo admitted, rolling over and shooting him a smile. His eyes were surely still red from crying and his whole face and body felt heavy, but he felt good enough to crack a few jokes.

"Ranboo..." he suddenly became introspective. "Why are you here?"

Ranboo looked away, quiet.

"...Boo?"

"I'm here..." Ranboo's hand curled into a fist by his side, scrunching up the blanket. He spoke his next words slowly, quietly. "I'm here to be your friend. Because you need me. Because you... don't have any right now. At least... I think so. That's..—" he stumbled over his words for a moment—"I can't explain it. I just know. I'm sorry." He was looking at Tubbo now, seeing how his face scrunched up. How his jaw set. How the confirmation hurt him—that he wasn't just insecure. His friends weren't his friends anymore. "I'm sorry," Ranboo said again. His hand came up to brush against Tubbo's, and Tubbo opened his. Ranboo's fingers closed around his. Warm. Real. Comforting. Tubbo closed his eyes.

"Thanks for coming back, Ranboo. I... missed you."

Completely unedited, written partially to cope with my own feelings, and partially to get a feel for writing this AU and how their dynamic works in this verse. Thanks for reading <3

can tubbo translate what ranboo is saying to tommy so they can have a conversation? that seems cute. also im weak for allium duo. so i think it would be nice if they had some awkward conversations through tubbo XD but then got more comfortable with each other. tommy still probably doesnt know what to think, but "ranboo" is pretty funny so he rolls w it

yeah but ranboo and tommy only get a few interactions bc basically, imaginary friend rules r kinda like from that one movie w the babysitter that i can’t remember the title of: ranboos only there when tubbo needs him, and not when he wants him. so when tubbo makes good friends withh tommy, he doesn’t rly need ranboo (and ranboo understands that- he’s the one who makes the choice to leave), despite how much he wants him to stay

I came up with an au in which Ranboo is Tubbo’s accompany in his dreams. Ranboo looks after the boy and protects him from nightmares.

Some of the worldbuilding stuff:

- All of the places and people Tubbo knows IRL are deformed in some way

- Even tho Ranboo can change dreams and make them safer, his powers are very restricted, so in a lot of situations he’ll try not to change but to avoid certain problems

- Ranboo doesn't exist irl. He’s the work of Tubbo’s childhood imagination which stayed w/ him throughout all these years (kinda like an imaginary friend)

so I'm thinking of an origins smp au where everyone there is reincarnated from the dream smp after the server resets. I'm a big fan of server resets completely ending the world, if you haven't seen my other "theory" before about the dream smp.

in this au, ranboo and tubbo's marriage became... strained. about a year into the marriage. they still love each other but it's clear that there's been so much trauma in their relatively young lives that they've never really had the time to fully get to know each other. a marriage isn't just knowing your partner will have your back but also knowing what they like and don't like, what makes them tic, their favorite color, their dream vacation spot, etc. and while ranboo and tubbo have the first part pretty locked down it's obvious they don't know each other on a deep enough level for the marriage to be smooth. they stay together for Michael and for the security of having one another to come home to but end up sleeping in different rooms or barely talking to each other for days. they argue a lot, cry even more, sometimes about the imaginary pressure to stay married, sometimes because they wish the marriage was what they'd dreamed of. at the end of the world, they spend their last day with michael. as the world border closes in, tubbo tells ranboo he loves him. ranboo tells him he's sorry they were too late. their deaths are bittersweet, and their essences are scattered to the universe with a tinge of sadness.

cut to the osmp. a ranboo and a tubbo join the server, and immediately feel pulled towards each other. it's less magnetic and more a steady orbit, their lives coming together and gently circling in perfect synchronization. ranboo knows tubbo's favorite flowers are pink tulips even before he changes into a bee. tubbo knows ranboo's favorite color before they have to pick the palette of his room. they get to learn the little things. they bond and grow as friends. on some nights, there is a feeling of sadness, as they peacefully build their farm and joke in a way they feel they can't take for granted this time. on some nights, they feel an absence, building an extra room in their base together for a reason they can't place but that feels right. the room stays empty, even after sneeg moves in. they still come to check on it, from time to time. when ranboo proposes, after years of friendship, it's a surprise to neither of them. they spend their marriage in peaceful bliss. the arguments are short and inconsequential. they think they've done better this time. sometimes a second chance is all you need.

Or, Techno, Wilbur, and Tommy are basically chaotic forces of nature, destined from birth to end the world and bring destruction. Most who hear of the tale of them are trying their best to track them down, and to end the monsters while they’re still young, still just children.

Phil has a different plan.

(In which Phil raises the minecraft equivalents of the anti-christ with love and support, so much so to the point where the world ending is really just a funny thought, and Phil has three kids who casually have powers that are bit more extreme than anything else in the world)

He doesn’t like being without his armor and tools; he feels too exposed, and if something happens, he’ll be helpless.

“Ranboo?” Tubbo calls, glancing back.

Ranboo shakes his head and hurries to catch up. “Yeah, it’ll be fine,” he repeats. “Everything’s gonna be fine."

Tubbo grins. “That’s the spirit.”

Rule 5: be loyal. L'manberg doesn't do well with supposed traitors. Ranboo deals with the consequences.

And just like when he met Techno, Phil's first instinct is that he has to help this kid. While living together, Techno and Ranboo learn that they're much more similar than they had previously thought, and Phil learns that it's not too late for him to be a better dad.

Then he remembered, he remembered Techno stopping him in the fight. He remembered being handed his book, the question in Techno’s gaze. He swore, in that moment, Technoblade, the Technoblade, had been worried about him. He remembered that he had been told to leave, to run, to get away and preserve himself. He had spared him, he remembered that Techno had spared him.

Techno had helped him. Phil had tried to protect him, to get him away from the danger.

They were there for him.

heehoo fae designs go brrrrrrr

ok quick rundown on the au:

tubbo and tommy were best friends for like,, a day,, before tommy disappeared. and as the years went by, tubbo began to think that tommy was an imaginary friend he thought of because he didn’t — and still doesn’t, if he’s being honest — have friends.

on tommy’s side, he was still heading home when something happened, and he got washed away by a nearby river. he ended up getting saved by ranboo ex-machina, miles away from tubbo’s house — with torn up wings, no less. which, for something as tiny as him, something that depended on their wings to get out of situations, was practically a death sentence. luckily for him, he had ranboo.

ten years pass, with everyone living out their lives.

one day, tubbo ends up having to move houses — he probably did that a lot growing up, as i imagine he’s a foster child here — and once he’s settled in, he decides to go explore the nearby forest, like he did when he was a kid.

he’s pretty deep in the woods when he hears a faint sounds, as if something was in a struggle, and when he looks around, he finds a large bird trying to attack… something? he can’t quite see it, but that doesn’t stop him from going and shooing the bird away. as the bird flies away, he turns to whatever it was attacking, and sees…… a small, moth-like person…? w..what???

DAISY LORE AU KIDS !!!

i thought i’d make a kind of rough intro to each of the kids that will be present in the au - this’ll help me to keep track of them, and so i thought i’d put it here too !!

daisy > george’s eight year old kid !! she’s stubborn and super inquisitive about Everything, and has a wicked sense of humour. she’s obsessed with monsters and specifically the smp Monster she’s been told about all her life, and is the first one to befriend dream’s ghost.

lissie > niki’s sister (10) !! not exactly sister, but she kind of spawned out of nowhere and niki grew attached to her :D she’s really shy but loud when she’s around friends, and loves pulling pranks with fundy, which she gets away with by a) blaming fundy and b) blaming helga

helga > karl, sapnap + q’s kid (7) !! just the worst troublemaker known to man - where she goes, trouble follows. she’s loud and often seen as rude bc she doesn’t really get / care about social cues (same), and very protective over her twin.

james > karl, sapnap and q’s kid (7) !! he’s as stubborn as, but not nearly as loud or as boisterous as, his twin sister, and instead is pretty polite and studious. he looks a LOT like sapnap, and is clingy to his family and friends. he’s easily scared, but often gets his sister out of trouble.

angel > puffy’s kid (8) !! he’s just the nicest kid ever ,, brings his friends gifts almost every day,, always cheers them up,,, he’s super aware of people’s moods and feelings and tries to keep everyone happy. he can be loud, and there’s very little he doesn’t like - he’s friends with everyone and everything.

michael > ranboo and tubbo’s adopted kid (9) !! he’s pretty overprotected but this only makes him more rebellious: he’s super clever and picks up loads of new hobbies pretty quickly !! he’s currently Obssessed with old buildings and the adults of the smp lore talking about them to him :D he’s daisy’s best friend!

emmeline > bbh + skeppy’s kid (8) !! unlike her dads, she’s pretty Hot Tempered and violent and likes to swear (never around her dad bc bad would be Mad TM), mostly because her dads Don’t and it feels like rebellion kdfkdf. she doesn’t like daisy much, but gets on surprisingly well with james and angel, who she spends a lot of time with

darian > ponk and awesamdude took him as their kid !! he’s 10 and pretty chilled out !! he’s happy go lucky and sort of vibes with everyone ,, he does get upset easily, he’s pretty emotional, but on the whole he’s a happy kid !! he likes telling stories and often scares his friends with his imaginary friend wil, who tells him loads of weird facts (nobody believes in said imaginary friend and all believe he’s making the facts up, but they don’t mind anyway)

- Foolish can change his height whenever he wants. It just so happens, that the first time he does, is the first time he goes to town. He then gets lost and ends up in a flower shop where a lovely couple, Puffy and Niki, reside. Foolish proceeds to understand what it means to be adopted

- I wanna imagine that Puffy thinks that Ranboo and Tubbo are either like, Foolish's children or that Foolish is related to one of them somehow, and so she automatically titles herself their grandfather.

- Niki thinks it's hilarious and is quite fond to call herself a grandmother. She pledges to be the most badass grandmother out there

- Ranboo and Tubbo have no fucking clue what's going on

I want an entire scene, where Foolish invites Niki and Puffy to dinner, and that's when Ranboo and Tubbo realize what's going on. However, Tubbo being Tubbo, is like "alright, how can I take this further", so he downright pretends to be Foolish's kid. Tubbo introduces Ranboo as his husband, and even brings out Michael. Puffy has a crisis cause she's a great-grandfather and Niki is like 'wait why do children have a child?? Why are they married??' but goes along with it. Foolish is too caught up in the lie he never realized was going on and can't back down from it. Let's just say the Dinner goes great.

Bonus;

None of the SBI know who Drista is cause she hides herself from them for fun, so they all legit think she's like, Tommy's imaginary friend or something sksks. Like- "sure Tommy I'm totally sure that 'The God of Chaos' ate my last goddamn popsicle" - Wilbur at some point

au where the dream smp is an imaginary world that tommy and his friends made!

- tommy, techno, and wilbur are brothers and phil is their dad because sbi my beloved :)

- tubbo, dream, and foolish are brothers

- tubbo lives across the street from tommy and they're childhood friends

- ranboo recently moved in to their neighborhood and now they hang out a lot

- purpled is also friends with them but he lives farther away so they can't hang out as much

- ranboo has a pig doll he got when he was young and it's kinda beaten up which is why he made it a zombie piglin in their world

- wilbur and dream like to join in on their imaginary world to scare them and add some angst or stuff like that

- phil and techno also join occasionally, but usually keep to themselves

- whenever techno joins though, he insists on bringing in plastic swords or sticks and fighting everybody

- purpled made his character an alien and gave himself a ufo because he thinks aliens are really cool

- one day tubbo just decided he and ranboo were married and started holding his hand everywhere they went

- foolish is really into like wood shop and stuff like that so he builds them things a lot

- tommy and tubbo usually rope their brother's friends into playing too, like quackity and sapnap and niki

- tommy started it when he was younger but they kept doing it and now he's really invested in the story which is why he keeps doing it

- tommy is so invested in it that he begins to flesh out the story and write it and down so it becomes more of a book than just an imaginary game and everyone is supportive and helps write it :)

that's all I really have right now but I think it's a neat concept,

more ghosthunter au things while i’m still too lazy to make a proper doc

- Phil still has a relationship with Kristen in this au. She’s also still the goddess of death. Do some necromancy, get yourself a wife

- Wilbur is Phil and Kristen’s biological son. He’s not entirely human ;)

- Fundy is Wilbur and Sally’s biological son. Sally was a demon (it’s complicated). Fundy is ABSOLUTELY not human. He tags along with the sbi a lot.

- Techno and Tommy are very much human

- Techno is an empath. He’s innately gifted at interacting with the beyond and ghosts/demons/supernatural creatures are drawn to him. They used to be able to posses him but he has since learned how to ward them off, though they still like to take residence in his head for a chat. Sadly that skill came a little too late for his birth family

- Tommy is literally just some kid but also made an ‘imaginary friend’ when he was little named Tubbo. Tubbo is very much not imaginary. He’s a demon, though he takes an appearance based on Tommy’s subconscious and as thus always looks like a boy of similar age as Tommy instead of his true form

- Tubbo is bonded married to Ranboo, also a demon

- Speaking of Demons, Skeppy summoned one and it became his soulmate. Skeppy, introducing Bad to Techno: “Hey Techno this is my boyfriend!” Techno: “Skeppy that’s a demon...”

- Sam is also a ghosthunter. He’s the only character in this AU who actually acts like he’s in a horror movie and not in a parody. He’s always warning others of the dangers of messing with dark powers. Nobody listens to him ever

Damn, that Undertale!reader concept? Pretty pog. I’m intrigued. Loyal-or Dodo, if you can think of anything hah-please share more ideassssssss

The idea of a forced encounter to let people see y/n’s soul like Loyal mentioned? Mmmm I have been fed oh my gosh my interest is peaked.

• Dream and Vilbur would do it without hesitation.

• Tommy doesn’t think you’re being serious, there is no way that this “encounter” or whatever will make someone’s “soul” physically appear. Whoopsies, he was just proven wrong. And now he’s got a traumatized person quivering in front of him.

• Ranboo might when in Enderstate and Technoblade when the voices get to him. When they snap out of it they see you curled in on yourself on the ground with your hands protectively holding something emitting a glow to your chest. From what they can see before it vanishes, it’s a glowing object in the shape of a heart. Depending on how violent they were, there will be a bright or dim glow to the heart and it either had a smooth, slightly damaged, or cracked-almost to the point of shattering-surface. And it looks like the amount of damage done to your body is reflected on this little bobbing heart. Maybe, if the damage is almost fatal? You plead with them for mercy. However, it’s not their names that you list. “Sans, I’m sorry. I swear I didn’t do anything. I had nothing to do with their choice of actions. I don’t know why Frisk would do this, I’m so so sorry, please don’t hurt them. They’re just a kid. I-I didn’t know this was happening. I’m so sorry.” Which would change to: “Frisk would never hurt anyone, Sans. Leave them alone! It, it had to have been someone else. There’s no way my baby sibling would kill anyone, let alone...everyone...” or for extra angst, “Frisk, what are you doing? It’s me, your big sibling! I-I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m here for you. Just...put the knife down please. Frisk? FRISK? FRISK GET AWAY PLEASE OH MY G-”

(I personally do not believe the “theory” that Chara is the one that does all the killing which is often seen in fics, art, comics. Where they persuade Frisk to do it. Literally because they kill two monsters for you. It’s you the player, or, in the context of the game, Frisk. So for this I thought: how fun would it be to find out your child sibling is a cold hearted murder, only to forget about it thanks to the reset, but remember-and get thrown into a flashback or something along the lines-when on the brink of death)

Okay okay so like,,, damn that shit is cool. I wanna see some of the more powerful users (underrated ones especially) be able to do magic. I’m just a sucker for magic in general but that can be such a pog idea. Like the sorcerer stuff got passed down. That means they must’ve had a past with monsters! Intermingling at least. And hybrids. They’re proof, right?

So for that last bit, I can understand why you don’t believe it. I honestly don’t like believing it either, but here me out on this. So Chara isn’t a ghost. Chara is just a voice in Frisks head. This probs sounds a lot like that theory but that’s Frisk’s way of justifying what she had done. This was completely normal. See! Even that other kid was doing it! Or just “it wasn’t me! It was Chara (the imaginary friend they think is real) Haha Chara being imaginary friend? Or voice in head? Fun idea- (this is probs just that theory but like,, I think it’s cool)

idk i think just them!

m thinking tubbo made up ranboo in like early elementary school but kinda forgot abt him once he made friends (which kinda yknow. rly sucked for ranboo) and then uh oh tubbo kinda loses his friends when he starts like sophomore year in hs- they just move away, drift off, etc. and ranboo just. appears and tubbos like wtf

and then tommy moves in and tubbo has to try to make friends w him while also balancing ranboo and trying not to get weird stares from talking to ranboo (essentially thin air to other people)

and also i think their relationship as tubbo enters sophomore year is lowkey strained bc ranboos bitter abt being left behind- they kinda tease each other a bit too meanly but in the end (after ranboo like embarrasses tubbo in front of tommy n cause him to scare tommy off) they have a conversation abt it- and ranboo says that tubbos happiness comes first and that he knows he has to let him grow up, etc

Giant monster au.

I'm thinking about thee smp pets and well, why not.

Carl is a mashup of things big enough to let Techno ride him, and he doesn't trust really anybody besides Tech for a long time. But he let's Phil touch him and help sometimes.

An hippocampus is a rare sea creature, and is even rarer one like Friend of one solid color as the normal rainbow types, and one so blue its practically invisible in deep waters? So of cource he was hunted down, only really finding security in the giant siren care, and so they are friends.

The giant family has heard of Henry and Clementine, they sometimes heard them two, but Tommy never really showed them or talked about them besides putting somethings on their name, Techno is still sure that it's just imaginary friends the boy made up himself. Wilbur actually meet Henry, but, well. How do you explain that a cow the size of an entire house, have multiple appendages and apparently mushrooms growing out of it and it can disappear and appear from view at any time is real?

And sure enough, Clementine is too so strange and mysterious as their demon brother, and apparently not even from this dimension really? Well, Tubbo is not the one to ask more about it and is just happy that the little fox pup that he found in one of the walls in the giants house is doing good.

Ranboo has no idea how enderchest, enderpearl, Jjjjjjjjefrey and dogboo came to him, and even less how he actually remembers that these are his pets, but at least he is relieved that Techno's room is such mess that mobs and other creatures naturally exists there, he was surprised to find multiple endermans, iced parts with polar bears and winter foxes families and even phantoms (?????), and he has to agree with Philza to clean it up a little.

All of this is amazing. But there's one thought that will not leave my head because of you now anon.

Clementine is just fucking Mothman. Tommy saw this big moth creature and decided to call it Clementine. Mothman is very amused and decides that this strange demonic creature is alright and allows Tommy to call him Clementine.

I'm so sorry, but that is all I can think about. Clementine is just Mothman.

When you had first been pulled from the world you had become a god in, you weren’t quite sure what was happening. The world had practically dissolved around you, only giving you enough time to grab Talos before there was nothing left. The two of you hovered in the blackness for a while before you both began to fall. The darkness disappearing as suddenly as it had come.

You realized, fairly quickly, that you were in a new world. Nothing about the area was the same. You didn’t know why you had shifted worlds, but you gained a new canvas to build on, so you didn’t mind too much. After building a couple more machines and a house, even though you didn’t really need it, Talos began talking about a new imaginary friend. They said that their friend looked kind of like them and disappeared to play every so often. One day Talos asked to bring their friend to visit, you, assuming that Talos’s friend was imaginary, said yes. About a week later Talos disappeared to play again, they came home earlier than usual though, and brought another person with them.

Ranboo was mildly terrified. Okay maybe very terrified. But in his defense, when Talos had brought him to the hollowed-out mountain where they said they lived, he was not expecting to meet the deity that Tommy worshiped. Said deity appeared to be highly confused. The being sent Talos to grab something across the mountain before turning back to Ranboo.

After a few moments is spoke. “This isn’t a single-player world is it.” It said, more of a statement than a question.

“Uh-Umm, No?” Ranboo replied.

The deity sighed then looked across the cavern to where Talos was happily digging through some shulker boxes. They appeared to think for a moment before turning back to the Enderman hybrid. “Have you ever been to The End?” it asked. Ranboo simply shook his head, beginning to calm down a little. The deity reached into thin air and pulled out a black shulker box, setting it down, It filled the box with endstone, chorus fruit, end rods, and end crystals of various sizes. They picked up the box and handed it to Ranboo, who took it carefully. Then the deity spoke again.

“I would put that in an ender chest when you can, as far as I can tell The End is off-limits in this world.”

Ranboo nodded and gently put the box in his inventory just as Talos bounced over again. They handed something to the deity before grabbing Ranboo’s hand and dragging him off to play again.

You sighed as soon as the other player was out of sight. Well, this made things much more complicated. Or maybe not, you were a god after all.

GLASS THIS IS VERY GOOD

Being so causally excepting that not only was Talos's friend was real, but also that it ment that there was definitely other players. You weren't very worried, after all the enderman was in survival mode and therefore any others should also be in it. Hopefully your gift of end native materials would be appreciated
