On the day before the first killing frost I felt so sorry to say goodbye to my big beautiful double impatiens that I took a little cutting to root up. To my surprise even though it’s still tiny it’s blooming!

Impatiens hawkeri (New Guinea impatiens)

As you can see from the petals of this New Guinea Impatiens, after many, many months, the rains have finally returned to Vancouver. Of course our rain forests are delighted and the rain is really helping out with this terrible wildfire season. As of yesterday (Sept. 3), 6,137 fires had burned 163,639 square kilometers (63,181 sq mi) in Canada. This year alone, five percent of Canada's forests have gone up in smoke. A rainy day has never been so welcome.

Pale Jewelweed

Impatiens pallida

Native to much of eastern North America, pale jewelweed prefers wet soils in bottomland forests, along streams, etc... Jewelweed is also an old remedy for poison ivy rashes. Hummingbirds love the flowers as well. The pictured plants were growing en masse in a bottomland forest next to the Big River.

I was looking up a weird flower I found, when I stumbled upon this, and got intrigued because the name is 'Nedirak', which means 'don't touch'. I thought wow is this thing poisonous to skin? Why wouldn't one touch it?

So I went to read on and if the cocoon of the flower is mature, it will break at the slightest touch and start shooting seeds at 6-7 meters distance. I need to find this plant I do not believe this. The nature is insane.
