Why I Think Cell is the Most Horrifying DBZ Villain
Frieza remains a silver tier DBZ villain and the Namek arc is still the best arc in DBZ in my opinion. However, in some ways Cell is the more terrifying villain.
Design
Imperfect Cell's design is horrifying and creepy. Whenever I see his face in Youtube videos, I immediately cover my eyes. He is monstrous! I hate cockroaches too so his bug design does not make his imperfect form easier to bear. Yeah, I am a 23-year-old woman, don't judge me!
His Absorption Technique
So almost every villain after Cell had some kind of absorption technique. Buu ate people, Baby was a parasite and Omega Shenrom fused with the other dragon balls. However, Cell's tail is the thing out of nightmares. I don't know how Piccolo could watch with a straight face as Imperfect Cell literally liquified a begging man right in front of him. I will be honest and say that I lost a bit of respect for Piccolo when I watched that scene. Not to mention the scenes where he absorbed Android 17 and 18. Tien even exclaims how revolting Cell's absorption of 17 was. The scene where he absorbed 18 was...interesting. Let's leave it at that. When he powered up to fight Piccolo in his imperfect form, you could see the souls of all the people he devoured. In the sub version, you can hear their wailing moans. Talk about demonic.
Stealth and sneakiness
I think what also makes Cell dangerous is his patience and stealth. He wandered on earth for 4 years without being detected. He ravaged so many towns without the Z fighters catching wind. You never know when he will strike which makes things even more tense. The way he snuck up behind Android 17 to absorb him is still hard to watch. He was running circles around the Z fighters. He made everyone look incompetent.

Imperfect Cell is easily Cell’s most intimidating form. Semi perfect Cell is just an ugly looking dude and Perfect Cell is just a guy in a stupid costume. But Imperfect Cell with his long ass tail, weird beak, weird head and just general inhuman appearance.
Definitely a monster.
Edit: Oh! I got polls! Let’s see other peoples opinions

Android 18 Rant (17 was the better Android twin)
So I have been watching clips from the Cell Saga for nostalgia and to overcome my fear of seeing Imperfect Cell's disgusting cockroach face. Anyway, I was comparing the absorption scenes of 17 vs 18 and looked at how 17 was treated in the story versus 18...and I wish 17 was the android that was kept in the Buu saga instead of 18.
I think my feelings can be expressed in 4 main sections.
Fight Scenes
So 17 had more fight scenes to show his mettle compared to 18. 17 fought against the Z fighters, Piccolo and Imperfect Cell. 18 had her one badass fight against Vegeta and then faded away to sit still and look pretty in the background. And her fight against Vegeta is not truly that impressive. The fight sequence between 17 and Piccolo was way more spectacular.
Scenes Leading up to their absorption
I think Cell's absorption of 17 was WAY more horrific. Imperfect Cell gave 17 a bad beatdown and then we saw his entire absorption process from start to horrific end. When Imperfect Cell begins to transform we see 17 literally falling into the void as he becomes part of Cell. With 18, it's horrible how Vegeta let Cell absorb her and it must have been frightening to see Cell walk towards her mockingly with his tail ready. But I think still 17 has the edge over her. Plus 18's absorption seemed to be way more focussed on Krillin than her. Her "death" is less about something horrific happening to her than Krillin losing a possible love interest.
The narrative coddled 18
Why did no one try to kill 18?! Piccolo's goal was to kill 17 to prevent Cell from transforming. But's like after Semi-perfect Cell everyone lost their game. Besides simp Krillin, no one had any motive for sparing her. Why didn't Tien tri-beam her instead of Cell? His attack would be 100% guaranteed then. Why didn't Trunk blast her to bits when Vegeta was being a total dumbass (that scene did Trunks so dirty)? With Krillin, the show probably wants us to think he sees good in her, but why? Because she kissed him ONCE?? How does Krillin know that she did not enjoy a murder spree after she pecked his cheek? It's the height of foolishness that Krillin risked the whole world because he caught feelings. I doubt Krillin would have hesitated as much if it was 17 instead of 18. She was spared because she was a sexy girl. Lowkey sexism. She was just reduced to Krillin's love interest by the end. His own damsel in distress.
...But I will admit that Krillin would have likely spared 17 too given how he accepted 16 later.
18's Dumbfounded Look Post Cell Appearance
What pisses me off about 18 is how stupid she looks and acts when the time gets rough. The girl could not even bother to step in when her brother was being pounded into the ground by Cell. If you don't care enough about your twin to help at least run away. So many times, she stands around looking like a wide-eyed child when she should be escaping. Part of me thinks she had no self-preservation. Why not flee during 16's fight with Imperfect Cell? And then she takes her sweet time while Tien is risking his life to keep her sorry behind safe when he should have just destroyed her. And then she stands around looking like a blonde airhead AGAIN when Vegeta is fighting Cell. Darn woman, do you want to live or not?! You have the advantage of being undetectable with ki sense. What the hell are you doing?! 17 was a total idiot when he chose to not escape as well but at least he went down fighting. I bet 17 would not stand around gaping like a goldfish if the roles were reversed.
Watching Android 18 just makes me annoyed. She had one moment to shine and then faded into obscurity. The only reason she remained relevant is because she became Krillin's wife. Not that her being his wife served any greater purpose beyond making Krillin happy (and I admit that Krillin deserves his happiness). Unlike Chi Chi and Bulma who gave us useful child characters, Krillin's family is literally a waste of space in the Buu saga narrative. On Kami's lookout when she is arguably the strongest fighter there, it's Krillin, like the heroic guy he is, who goes out to protect everyone from Buu. It's a shame how the androids' unlimited energy just never comes up again. I wish Android 17 stuck around. At least he had a more entertaining personality.
These are my opinions and if you feel differently about 17 and 18 you do you. But 18 is just another DBZ female that ended with a sad whimper.
If I had to choose the best or most badass DBZ female, I would go with Videl or Bulma. Or even Chi Chi or Launch! 18 sure as heck does not deserve the title. I am happy for her and Krillin but that's about it.

Alright, timelines. (link to my old post)
Today I'm going to walk you through the cluster fuck of Toriyama not paying attention to what he writes from the Trunks arc to the epilogue of the Perfect Cell arc.
Reminder that I divide the "Android Saga" in 4 arcs:
Trunks arc (arrival of Frieza to 3yg training),
Android arc (until the time machine is discovered)
Imperfect Cell arc (until Cell absorbs 18)
Perfect Cell arc (+ epilogue of Trunks killing imperfect Cell)
I will also pull Toei and Daizenshu content if needed just to show how bad it gets, BUT that's just to enhance my argument. Everything here is manga-deductible without extra context or content.
As I've shown in the link above, the manga implies 4 timelines:
Forgotten timeline (Cell kills Trunks and steals his time machine),
Lost timeline (the timeline that dead!Trunks traveled to, which did not have a Cell pop in the middle of its Android Saga, otherwise Trunks would've known about Cell),
Future Timeline (the one we know and see, Trunks traveled to a uni where Cell traveled to first, so there's changes and Cell pops up in the Android saga),
Main Timeline (the one we know and follow, to which Cell and Trunks traveled to),
Let's go into details about dates and math and everything first. (under the read more because LONG)
When Future Trunks discovers dead!Trunks' time machine, he states that it comes from age 788, which is 3 years from where he comes from (which means he comes from 785), and that the Machine landed here "4 years ago". 4 years ago was about one year before Trunks first came (aka one year before Meca Frieza stuff).
Tumblr media
During the first trip, Trunks states he comes from 20 years into the future.
Tumblr media
That means during his first trip, he went from 784/785 to 764.
We also know he's 17 at this point and "will be born in 2 and a half years"
Tumblr media
(Baby Trunks is supposed to be ~6 months old by May 12th, 767, so "I warn in 764, I'll be born in 2.5 years, so I was born in 766" works. Ignoring the wikis about Trunks' birthday being June and Future Trunks' birthday being in November, it doesn't matter here, we just need the years))
For Trunks to be 17 during his first trip, he needs to travel from 784 (before his 18th birthday). So by the time he comes back the second time, it needs to be in 785 (so he is 18!); since it takes 8 months to charge the machine (Trunks the Story manga chapter), that works out.
Tumblr media
So in terms of trips, we have:
Trunks (both versions) : (early-mid) 784 to 764
Trunks (both versions): (early-ish) 785 to May 12th 767
Cell: 788 to 763
Tumblr media
(handy recap sheet)
At the time, for Toei, there were only two Timelines (aka it was both multiverse theory AND dynamic time travel theory, because Trunks becoming aware of Cell who killed him means Trunks isn't killed by Cell... yeah it's all sorts of EHH ??):
Tumblr media
Anyway, you'd think this would be fine right? The image of Cell killing Trunks while he still had his sword (which he shouldn't since he broke it on 18's arm he never used it again in canon) is anime filler, we're all good.
Except... no. This fucking panel right here. Cell explains "(the machine/bots collecting dna) could've gotten Trunks cells but didn't because we had enough Saiyan cells".
Tumblr media
Cell supposedly comes from a timeline where GOKU killed Frieza and Cold. But this god forsaken panel contradicts that. (of course it's just that Tori forgot, but we are DB fans, we take things seriously and word of god of the manga is supreme and can't be wrong)
This means that THIS particular version of Cell doesn't come from the Forgotten Timeline.
The Cell we know and love/hate comes from a timeline in which a future Trunks killed Frieza and Cold, BUT everything still went to shit (Goku + gang dying, dead!Trunks traveling to the past, and coming back to destroy the Androids).
In this timeline, Bulma met Future Trunks (who killed Cold and Frieza) in 764, presumably the gang got all the warnings like in the main timeline, but everyone STILL died. So she invented the Time Machine to send her Trunks to the past (perhaps with different instructions so as to not repeat the mistakes of the Future Trunks she saw 20 years prior).
Here's the thing. There is a way for this timeline to exist. You "just" gotta work on the postulate that "each time there's a time travel to the past, a new branch is created". And "if the time machine travels back in time a second time, it lands in the timeline it first branched out unless it travels back further in time". Rephrased: The "784 to 764" trip created a new branch in 764. The "785 to 767" trip landed in that new 764 branch. However the "788 to 763" trip created a whole new branch in 763.
The Time Machine that was piloted by dead!Trunks actually "traveled further back in time", creating an earlier "branch"... which is why Trunks noticed changes, including Goku's late arrival (or Frieza's earlier arrival, we don't know).
Yes, because Future Goku did not use Instant Transmission to fight Frieza and Cold. We know he didn't because Future Bulma had the coordinates where Goku landed, which is how Future Trunks got said coordinates. If Goku had IT to fight Frieza and Cold, Bulma wouldn't have known where the pod was going to land 3 hours later.
So timelines and where does Cell come from? Well you need a timeline from the Branch that started in 764 (with a Future Trunks' arrival to kill Frieza and Cold) but in which everyone died to the Androids, and in which, when Trunks traveled back home, he was able to destroy the Androids...
Anyway here's my final recap of all the timelines in Z, in which "one time travel is one interference creating a new branch". And this is how we can see where Cell comes from :D
Tumblr media
This opens a realm of possibilities!!
Did a version of Trunks stay in the past, during his first trip and got a wish to Shenron to have a way to destroy his androids, so he didn't come back in 767 and didn't grow strong at all? Did the future trunks that warned against the Androids but that timeline still went to shit approached the problem differently?? who knows! Time for fanfics and doujins I guess :D
Peace!

Dragon Ball Super 049
Tumblr media
Who wants fish sausages?
Tumblr media
Last time, Trunks arrived in the present, and his reunion with Dragon Team turns out to be very awkward.  He mistakes Goku for his nemesis, Goku Black, and Bulma has to smack him to snap him out of it.  Then Trunks sees Bulma and breaks down crying because in his native timeline, she just got killed by Goku Black.  Also, Kid Trunks is here, and he’s confused by the way his parents call the new guy “Trunks” and he calls them “mom” and “dad”.
Also, the Pilaf gang won’t shut the hell up, and also Beerus and Whis are intrigued by all of this, and quickly deduce that this is some sort of time travel business.
Tumblr media
Back in the alternate timeline, Goku Black is still trying to figure out where Trunks went, when his Time Ring starts reacting to something.  Yeah, Time Rings are a thing now, and Goku Black has one, so this is another mysterious trinket of his.
Tumblr media
Back in the present, Whis explains that meddling with time is a serious offense.  Only certain divine beings are allowed to mess with time travel at all. To be fair, no one imagined a mortal would ever invent a time machine.  Also, it was Future Bulma who actually built the thing, and she’s dead now, so who’s left to punish?
Beerus considers meting out some divine justice, but Trunks begs for his forgiveness, and Goku points out that no one told him it was wrong.  Beerus offers to let this go with a stern warning if they can give him some tasty snacks, and Bulma produces fish sausages.
Tumblr media
And that seems to do the trick.  Beerus continues to voice disapproval of the time machine, but he doesn’t destroy it or punish Trunks.  I guess that’s appropriate, since he knows of the rule, but enforcing it isn’t his department.  Let me pause here to discuss the Supreme Kai of Time.
Tumblr media
So when this arc was first announced, I was very interested to see if Dragon Ball Super would acknowledge the lore established in Dragon Ball Online, where Trunks went on to join the Time Patrol, a group of warriors assembled by the Supeme Kai of Time.  The Xenoverse games and Dragon Ball Heroes manga explored that idea further.  It was the Supreme Kai of Time who first confronted Trunks about his temporal crimes, and he agreed to serve in the Time Patrol as “penance”.  She also agreed to allow his changes to history stand, and to preserve his own timeline, which is how both worlds continue to exist.
But DBS appears to ignore all of that, since it’s Beerus and Whis who confront Trunks.  Also, in the recap segment of this episode, the narrator specified that Trunks has traveled 17 years to reach the present-day in Dragon Ball Super.  So for this version of Trunks, it’s been several years since he defeated Imperfect Cell in DBZ Episode 194.  I thought maybe his Time Patrol career could have begun and ended before this Goku Black business, but that doesn’t work if Trunks has no idea who Beerus is, or what Goku and the others have been up to since he left them.
And that isn’t too surprising, since it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for DBS to suddenly reference a bunch of side characters from video games.  Except I do find it curious, because Akira Toriyama had a lot of creative control over the story elements in Dragon Ball Online, where the Time Patrol was first introduced.  So it seemed weird to me that Akira Toriyama would retcon himself like this.
Then again, now that I know how this arc turns out, maybe the discontinuity was the whole point, and the reason Chronoa and the Time Patrol don’t get involved in this arc is because the arc itself is the sort of time anomaly they would have to correct.  They just haven’t intervened yet.
Tumblr media
“So yeah, I just need you to go to the middle of Dragon Ball Super and just beat the crap out of it.”
“Sure!  Wait, beat up who, exactly?”
“No, the entire saga.  Go and kick its ass!  No survivors! <3”
“You're the boss!”
Tumblr media
Well, enough horsing around.  We’re stuck with this shitty arc, with it’s lack of Chronoa goodness and Xeno Trunks trenchcoatitude.  Bulma takes a look at the time machine, but it’s infested with annoying comic relief characters.
Tumblr media
The Time Machine is out of fuel, and Bulma doesn’t know how to recharge it or carry out other repairs.  Fortunately, her future self put a notebook in the glove compartment, and it contains all the information she needs to get the time machine up and running.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Goku and Vegeta ask Trunks what was so bad  that he had to come to the past for help.  Vegeta suggests it might be Majin Buu, but Trunks says he already dealt with that crisis some time ago.  The Supreme Kai of his world prepared him for Babidi and Dabura, and he was able to defeat them, preventing Buu’s resurrection.
Tumblr media
No, the real problem began about a year ago, when a man claiming to be Goku showed up and declared his intention to eradicate all intelligent life on Earth in the name of justice.  He also claimed to have already done the same on other planets.  It would be kind of odd that Trunks would have gotten this much backstory about his mysterious enemy, but we all know Goku Black never shuts the hell up, and Trunks has been fighting this guy for like a year straight.
Tumblr media
Vegeta accuses Trunks of using the time machine to flee, but Bulma insists that Trunks planned to return with reinforcements.  The notebook in the time machine proves it, because Future Bulma left a note to her younger self, explaining that it would be up to her to prepare the time machine for the return trip.  The notes don’t address her right eye drifting off to the side of her face, however.
Tumblr media
Beerus finds the whole thing kind of dumb, but he’s off in Flavor Town so he doesn’t care.
Tumblr media
Goku asks Trunks to spar with him to get an idea of how powerful this Goku Black guy is.  The script says he and Trunks have powered up to Super Saiyan 2, but the bangs don’t lie.  They drew Goku in Super Saiyan 1.  Trunks looks pretty much the same whether he’s SSJ1 or SSJ2, which is kind of a shame, but they can’t even draw Bulma on-model most of the time, so no use crying about it.
Tumblr media
Goku turns it up to Super Saiyan 3, and I think this is the second time in the whole series he uses this form.  I mean, it’s kind of obsolete at this point, but they show it in the opening credits, which implies it gets a lot of use.
Anyway, Trunks is amazed to see this new form, since he thought SSJ2 was the limit of Saiyan power.... sort of like how he never considered ascending beyond SSJ1 until Vegeta brought up the possibility.  Trunks is a little too modest for his own good.
Tumblr media
Then a temporal rift appears in the sky and Goku Black emerges.  Well, I guess we can settle this right now and save some trouble, right?  Right?
Tumblr media
“All right, losers, pack it up.   By order of the Supreme Kai of Time, I’m shutting this little shitshow down, permanently.”
“Awww, do we have to?  Wait, what if we give you some instant ramen and a fish sausage?  Huh?  Huh?”
“Instant ramen?  Don’t insult me.”
“Forget it, Kakarot, she’s one of those damn food snobs.  I know what she really wants.  Listen.  They can draw you as tall as you want.”
“Yeah...?”
“Think about it.  They don’t even bother with reference sheets on this show.  They can’t even remember what fingers look like most of the time.  I’ve grown eight inches since this turkey started.”
“Is that why your face looks so messed up?”
“Look, everything comes with a price.”
