Dragon-A-Day catchups #1! Speedrun time!

Day 8: Softest Dragon- I already did Creamsicle for day 2, so I went with my softest personality dragon, Jasper! She's a wandering healer who's staying with my clan temporarily to help fix lore shenanigans (may post more about that later, idk)

Day 9: A Dragon In Bad Need Of Lore- I swear, this kid REFUSES to tell me her name. Fancy skin, fancy scene, but what does she like? Darned if I know. I'm probably going to color this at some point if I get time, it's too fun a pose not to.

Day 10: A Chef- Well, technically Grace is just a cook, but ah well. It's fun picturing a huge Imperial serving tiny Fae and Veils, not much more to say there.

Day 11: A Gardener- Phi takes good care of the garden! She just... is growing it to eat. All of it. She's a Skydancer, they eat plants. Doesn't mean she doesn't feel guilty when caught.

Oh, right, I never posted these! Here are the rocks I acquired at my last rock show!

This big sparkly girl with the bottle green, glassy appearance is vivianite, a rock which is just as fragile as it looks! Vivianite has some really cool properties. It begins as a colorless mineral, but as soon as it’s exposed to light, it undergoes a chemical reaction that turns it this blue-green color. As long as it’s exposed to light, this chemical reaction will continue, and the crystals will turn darker and darker until they’re completely black. Another cool thing about vivianite is that it exhibits pleochroism, meaning the crystals look more green or more blue depending on the angle you view them at.

This funky-shaped sparkly girl is a scepter quartz! Scepter quartz occurs when a younger crystal begins growing on the tip of an older one, resulting in a big crystal perched atop a skinny one, like the jewel atop a scepter! This scepter is a smoky amethyst with some really cool stuff going on inside. My favorite detail is those red spots, which are caused by needle-like crystals of hematite growing inside the quartz!

This is the third meteorite to join my collection! This piece fell to Earth about four to five thousand years ago in northern Argentina. Its melted appearance is because the heat of entering Earth’s atmosphere actually caused it to melt! Campo del Cielo meteorites are iron-nickel meteorites, made from a metal alloy called meteoric iron. (Ok, so, not to go off on a tangent but meteoric iron is really cool stuff, historically. See, iron doesn’t occur on planet Earth in its native, metallic form. It’s always bound up in ores and has to be processed. But native iron does occur in the vacuum of space, and sometimes that iron falls to Earth as meteors, so the only iron that Bronze Age people had access to before the advent of iron smelting was from meteors. They made some really cool stuff with it. Did you know that Tutankhamen was buried with a dagger made from meteoric iron?)

This fossil boy is a slab of turritella agate! It comes from a fossil deposit in Wyoming called the Green River Formation. Those white shapes are the fossilized shells of turritella sea snails encased in chert. These shells were once buried at the bottom of an ancient ocean! Because of the cool patterns their cross sections make, turritella slabs like this one are used by lapidary artists to cut cabochons for jewelry.

Speaking of cool agates, here’s a neat little fire agate! This piece came from the southwestern United States. That metallic, rainbow iridescence (or “fire”) is caused by alternating layers of goethite and limonite, which form as botryoidal bubbles encased in translucent chalcedony. Fire agate is one of the coolest forms of agate, because it’s so incredibly rare! The only place in the world where it’s found is an area from central Mexico up through California and Arizona, where it was formed during ancient volcanic activity.

Here’s another cool agate! This is Aztec purple lace agate, which comes from Mexico. I don’t think they’re mining it out anymore (actually, it hasn’t been mined for a long time), so this is pretty scarce stuff! It doesn’t photograph well, so trust me when I say that this piece is much purpler in person. Other than that, I don’t know much about it!

Also very purple and also from Mexico is this Coyamito agate! Note the super cool hexagon shape. Coyamito agate is known for its pseudomorph formations: it replaces other minerals and grows in their shape. That’s rare in agate, but super common in the Coyamito agate deposit! In this case, the agate was growing in the hollow left behind by a hexagonal crystal.

Here’s something I’ve been wanting to add to my collection for a long time! This dignified boy is royal imperial jasper, possibly my absolute favorite kind of jasper. (And unlike most of the rocks the crystal healing crowd likes to slap the word “jasper” on, he’s actually a real jasper!) We’re seeing in cross-section what’s known as an “egg” formation, the result of a jasper nodule which started small and then grew outward in uneven layers. Changes in the environment during the formation of each layer resulted in all these different colors! This piece is also from Mexico.

And finally (drumroll please), it’s time for opals! As is tradition, I came home from the show with three brand new Ethiopian opals. Here they are!

Opal number one! Beautiful! Subtle and refined! 10/10!

Opal number two! Stunning! A style all her own! Her birthmarks really add warmth and color to the overall presentation.

Before I announce who made it into the competition, I want to ask that there's no negativity about the results. I'm sure there were some of you who submitted characters that didn't make it, but I'm only one person, and there's only so many characters I can have in a competition. For this reason, I've gone with only the most frequently submitted characters, which felt like the most fair way to do it.

You also may notice some trends, and for this reason I've chosen to match up the polls a little differently than most competitions. If I ever finish my book, its subtitle will be "A Paranoid Reading of Homestuck" I think. Describes both form and content

Mobster Kingpin (whose bust is depicted by a mosaic of urban murals, who lords over the dollhouse world the heros inhabit) is located, like many of Hussie's villains, along the 4th wall, and his career of moonshinery seems related to a characterization of perception as the distillation of the perceived objects' essence -- Roxy's orange pumpkins give way to Dirk's orange soda, as one of the little ways their early relationship s premised upon a division between simplicity and abstraction. In Homestuck abstraction kills the simple (RIP Jaspers), and Dirk becomes a Daunting Text when he "sucks the fun out of shit. like a turd hungry dracula" -- a phraseology that returns us to the liquid conception of essence and points us to Kanaya, "rainbow drinker" being among other things a euphemism for the eyeball, which takes in color -- and insofar as troll reproduction is vaguely judicial in tone, the drones holding their buckets like scales, the Mother Grub seems posed in part as yet another threatening paradigm of viewership, demanding of you your essence. The earliest instance of this is in act 1: John's allusion to being allergic to the scorn of the peanut gallery is followed by a commercial for Hi-C Ectocooler -- a weirdly obtuse seeding of Her Imperious Condescension, whose character is downstream of a more general racialization of the 4th wall. Act 1 drags the sylladex into the fear of abstraction, first by having the narration express apprehension toward alien lingo like "captchalogue", and again when John drops the cat-killer, causing his arms (both fake and real) to be locked away in a box. Right? Right.

Dave shouts/throws his NINJA SWORD at a sticky fingered crow (crows would later, in a dream, act as Dave's personal 4th walls) and implicitly hurls an N WORD at a black figure, contributing to the comic's general air of racialized paranoia. A stupid pun, yes. Prior to this incident, there was a collision in Dave's hash map between NINJA SWORD and JUICE which, given the pejorative status of the former, suggested the latter might be an implicit JEWS. A stupid pun, yes. But as point 1 indicate, we actually have a pretty broad pattern of paranoia surrounding "juice"

The first time I became aware of possible antisemitism in Homestuck was a scene where Jack Noir commands all the Felt to get in the oven -- a couple readers wondered if it were a coincidence that the page had been published on Holocaust Remembrance Day, like a sort of hostile spin on the Christmas alchemy binges, or the New Years ball-drops at Jade and Jane's towers. With point 1 in mind in strikes me as curious that the (tentative) archetypally antisemitic archetype of the story would be the locking away of "juice" in a container, here invoked by the genocidal antisemitism of the Nazis. Likewise the way Lord English's manic glare often resolves into an 88 -- a number twice invoking the 8th letter of the alphabet H and thereby Heil Hitler -- would be consistent with the eye's general depiction as that which distills "juice". I had some anons wondering if the hints that the Mother Grub collects the blood of Alternia's children amounted to a blood libel smear, and I still don't know tbh, but we've apparently problematized rainbow drinking from another angle, so cheers to that

That the hostility towards abstraction might be among Homestuck's ciphers for antisemitism casts a different light on John's sharp rejection of psychoanalytic paradigms and "psycho-babblery"...? Like Freud is being invoked partly for his Jewishness... and that Freud's widely considered indefensible is utilized to let the antisemitic antiintellectualism pass through smoothly, I guess...

An iteration of the eventually au where Raine and the CATTs actually accomplish…whatever their goals were ahead of time, and Belos dies and the government goes through an upheaval before the show timeline even starts.

The story pivots from "Jasper does what he can to protect Hunter from the sidelines" to "Jasper leverages every favor he's ever done for the CATTs as he negotiates to get and then maintain custody of his son".

Raine and the Martlet's relationship would be a big theme here. Raine has an entire government to reorganize and a public to placate, and here's the Martlet finally cashing in favors to…demand the CATTs hand the Golden Guard over to him. Raine doesn't know what to think of this, and Raine does not have time to think of this. There's some back-and-forth, some negotiating, because custody of the kid IS a weird thing to ask for, and Raine is trying to make sure the new government isn't as tyrannical as the old one. They want due process and trials (they would've wanted Belos to stand trial, but Belos refused to be taken alive, so that's not happening). So Raine is like "I get he's an imperial lackey and you hate him but idk if I can let you just have him for whatever weird revenge scheme you've cooked up, it'd be better to make him stand trial" and the Martlet is like "so your new regime is gonna punish a 16-year-old for being abused and manipulated?" and Raine is like and "well legally speaking he IS an adult so it wouldn't be out of bounds to make him answer for his crimes" and the Martlet is just like "I will break every bone in your body."

It'd go quicker if Jasper was up front about being Hunter's father, but…idk if he'd come clean about his identity. Intense paranoia has kept him alive, after all, but also there's a big push to punish Belos's followers so he'd rather no one know he was the Golden Guard, and if anything about grimwalkers comes to light and people start freaking out about THAT…yeah, no, he'll be the Martlet for the rest of his life if he has to, to keep Hunter safe. He'll tell Hunter everything once his son is safely in his keeping, but no one else needs to know. So he doesn't play the parent card.

But he doesn't have to. With the amount of favors the CATTs owe the Martlet, one unwanted orphan child soldier (and possibly one artificial magic staff) is too cheap of a price to turn down, especially since it saves Raine the headache of figuring out what to do with said unwanted orphan child soldier. Jasper is just relieved to finally get ahold of Hunter, but also infuriated by how easy it ultimately was, after all the talk. He knew he was the only person who prioritized Hunter's wellbeing, but literally no one else cared enough about Hunter to stop his supposed rival from taking him. This is all still pre-series; Hunter has no friends, no allies, no mentors or decent adult presences in his life. It's literally just Jasper looking out for him.

Hunter, meanwhile, is going through it, especially since there's multiple ways he could be going through it. Was he present during the coup? Was he out on a mission and got taken by surprise upon his return? Did shit go down while Hunter happened to be on Belos's bad side and afterwards he was found where he'd been locked in his room and neglected for a week?

However you wanna slice it, he gets tossed in the Conformitorium with the other Belos loyalists, awaiting trial or execution or whatever's in store for him. He's emotionally reeling, his entire world has fallen apart, he has no idea what he's supposed to do at this point, he has absolutely no one looking out for him, he's scared and alone and so, so tired and then he suddenly starts getting regular visits from his archnemesis.

The Martlet is strangely supportive, treats Hunter like a person instead of imperial scum, keeps him updated on what's going on politically, genuinely wants to know how Hunter's holding up or if there's anything he needs, brings him books and things from his room (Sprig)…he's gentle and understanding and protective, even. (The prison guards aren't kind, but they only get to be cruel once before the Martlet finds out and kicks them in the teeth.) The Martlet is upfront about the fact that he's trying to get custody of Hunter, and promises he's not going to let him be imprisoned for life or executed, the Martlet will get him out of there one way or another. And Hunter sits in his cell between visits, wrestling to reconcile everything he thought he knew about the Martlet and his uncle and the empire and remembering a time not too long ago when the Martlet made him an offer after a rescue in a cave, and realizing…there might actually be one person in the world who really does care about him.

Obviously they still have issues and ups and downs and whatever, but like. It's a bit overshadowed by the fact that they're not out of the woods yet. Jasper is actively (instead of passively) fighting for his son's safety, and Hunter finds himself forced to rely on a man he thought was his enemy for protection.

OUGGHHH. If it's before he's thirteen hes not the golden guard yet, but it's much more interesting if it's after. So Hunter is thirteen when this happens.

I mean I do gotta say from raines point of view this shit is sus as fuck. Raine doesn't initially know that hunter is a kid. My personal thought is that in canon they don't know this until becoming coven head; in eventually they do at some point beforehand because they're a lot more active in rebelling here.

And so like. Raine barely knows Marty. He's some obsessive freak with a bird willing to kill strangers to earn favours, and completely fucking obsessed with someone Raine's just found out is a teenage boy. Like they gotta hit a point where they're like okay absolutely the fuck not. They do NOT trust his mysterious intentions. They carry a very genuine risk of something I don't think Raine would let happen even to the emperor's attack dog.

All that is to say, I don't think he's getting hunter without 1. Admitting he's his dad 2. Stealing him

Because he's so fucking consumed by paranoia- kind of rightfully so tbh- yeah he's never going to burn an ace up his sleeve if he can hold it a little longer. So he plays his favours which gets hunter out of trouble at least. They're not going to charge him with anything. He gets him out of jail. So he's on. Like. House arrest. So, for the DRAMA:

Hunter is staying with Raine and they're bringing him along with them everywhere so 1. he can't run off 2. Jasper can't fucking kidnap him

Just. The drama. Jasper fucking following Raine around like give me the kid. Give me the kid. Give me the kid. And Raine is like sure, the second you give me a good reason to. Jasper is like because I'll tell everyone all the fucked up shit you've had me do. And Raine is like yeah okay but who is going to believe you. Hunter just doesn't know what the fuck is going on, but jasper is really nice to him and keeps bringing him snacks and.orimjsing he's going to get him out of all this

And of course you get the EXCELLENT dramatic concept of jasper getting sick of it and kidnapping him in the night only to have to actually fight Raine. Fuck yeah. And also like. What does Hunter do during this. Does he take this opportunity to make a run for it?! Does he help Raine or jasper?? Does he hide?? Who wins?!

Gasp as our Gallifreyan buccaneer crosses swords with the fearsome Red Jasper, scourge of the seven seas and possessor of at least one wooden leg! Thrill as Evil Evelyn the Pirate Queen sets sail in search of buried treasure, with only a foppish ship's captain and an innocent young cabin boy by her side! Marvel at the melodious mayhem which ensues as we sail the ocean blue!

And wonder why Evelyn still hasn't realised that very few stories have happy endings...

Jasper

While in the imperial capital of Melera, you counted him among your closest companions. He is the child of merchants from Thalasseon, the empire to the south, however he has spent most of his life in the Illyosian Empire. For as long as you've known him, he's been obsessed with discovering more about the spirit realm, frequently neglecting work and/or personal relationships while on the trail of some obscure myth.

He's quietly sarcastic and a persistent over-thinker, but fiercely loyal to those he counts among his friends. Your relationship is somewhat complicated by the fact that he believes you to be dead following the incident that prompted your escape from the capital, and vice versa.

Leonora

Your first introduction to her was her saving you from certain death at the hands of the Illyosian Empire. She helps you to reconstruct your life in Kemorlen, setting up an alchemists shop next-door as you became the resident mage. You know surprisingly little about her past, besides the fact she was once a mercenary, as evidenced by her skill with a sword.

She's blunt, impulsive and always on the move, creating potions, warding from spirits or starting a fight somewhere, and lives by the policy of acting first and apologising later.

Augustine

They arrived in town one night, shortly after you did, reportedly from the north east of the empire. Good humoured and quiet, you still can't shake the feeling that they're hiding something. Their skill as a healer is unrivalled, and they quickly become a key part of the team dealing with all the magical oddities of Kemorlen, alongside you and Leonora.

They have a tendency to freeze in a crisis and are slightly squeamish, with a dry sense of humour. They don't trust easily, always seem to be looking over their shoulder, and they don't seem to sleep a great deal.

Mira

She wanders into town one day, lyre in hand, and entrances the townsfolk with melodic tales of heroes, gods and strange creatures. She has been wandering the roads of Aiolos as a bard after being exiled from her home kingdom of Luria, gathering stories (and gold) from wherever she goes. She also seems to collect small animals, including a tiny mouse she imaginatively calls mouse.

You expect her to move on quickly, but she stays for reasons she doesn't disclose. She's pessimistic and absent-minded, always getting half-way through composing songs before forgetting about them and starting a new one.

appearance - deep brown skin, long curly dark brown hair, dark brown eyes. medium height.

Theo

They are a spirit that technically speaking you are responsible for bringing back from the underworld. Their memories are faded and patchy from being dead, but a sense that they have been wronged remains, as does a deep-rooted want for revenge. They tell you that they were a ruler, once, of a northern kingdom that they can't recall the name of.

They're awkward, contemplative and restless, unsure of who or what they are in a world that thinks them to be dead, and desperately wanting closure on their old life.
